Hi Bill,

I found a photo-op for the RiverBills.com bumper sticker at the Korea International Boat Show. As I see better photo-ops I will take them and share with you. As a show promoter I must end by saying “the Korea International Boat Show is open today thru Sunday, June 3rd. Hurry, these deals will not last!”

Thanks,

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

    Grafton Ferry Opening Delayed....  Again....

Heavy rains upstream of the Riverbend region has the Mississippi River levels rising once again.  This development has delayed the re-opening of the Grafton Ferry.

Originally, the ferry had been slated to resume operations earlier in the month, however, April's flooding had pushed the date back several weeks.  Grafton's Mayor, Tom Thompson stated that the current river situation has delayed the project again........

Reader Commentary......

    Bruce King

Bill,

Thanks for the note. A friend just showed me the website a couple weeks ago. Grown up around the river but never much ON the river. There seems to be more pleasure boating/fishing in our area than ever. Always had a fascination of water, rivers, lakes, ocean…doesn't matter…just something about it….like staring at a campfire. Hope to make a trip up to the St Charles area and the Alton area to see the boating sights that I never knew existed.

We moved from Crystal City to a home in Herculaneum a couple years ago overlooking the river. We see a little bit of everything on the river. I'll try to contribute a few pics when I can.

Thanks for all your efforts on the RiverBills website. Lots of great information and always good to see the boating and everyone enjoying the rivers.

I am not real fond of posting the river forecast today, Seems now\
we will be 34.2' next Tues. and probably a raise after that. Rock Island, Ill is raising 9/10, Burlington l ft, Keokuk 2.80 and Gregory Landings, Mo. 3.20' thoes raises are over 5 days. BUT that water has to go past our harbors. The river at Iowa City, Iowa will raise 5.20 over 5 days. So all in all, maybe July 4th?????Guess they are expecting a lot of rain over 3 days. We all need to run around and sing, We will survive. Think positive.

We will be closed this week as well as the weekend due to the river still being too high:-( If we do decide to open this weekend we will keep everyone posted.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in  2012 .......were from Rick Estes who hails out of Lake Center Marina in the boat.........Y2Katy

Hey, Bill,

Here are some shots from Sunday at the top of Two Branch slough. The sandbar is back (at least for a while). We tied up with some old friends that we met on this very sandbar 10 years ago. The first shot is of the 9 boat + 1 PWC, flotilla. I sent it full size if anyone wants to zoom in on this motley crew.
Pic #2: That PWC I mentioned belongs to the river legend himself, River Jim, 80 years old and still kickin' on the Mississippi.
Pic #3: A close up of the old gang, and I do mean old! (Just kidding guys! hahaha, right?)
Pic #4: Michael and his two river rats, Jack and Nathan.
Pic #5: Bruce, Mary (my lovely first mate) and Shirley. Like I said, we met this group of scalawags 10 years ago and found out at some point, that my cousin Gayle had married Bruce and Shirleys godson. It's a small world, even on the mighty Mississippi!

See, ya on the river, buddy!

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Recent Rains Mean More Flooding Coming........

Thanks to the recent rains in the upper Midwest, the Mississippi River may be heading for one of the most severe floods in recent memory.  The National Weather Service reports that the Mississippi River is rising at St. Louis from 22 feet on Wednesday, to a predicted crest of 36.8 feet by Monday.  The flooding expected could be made worse by the wet weather predicted over the next several days........

News Release From BoatUS

US Power Squadrons Takes Its Advance Level Courses Online With
BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety Partnership

Partner in Command Now Available

ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 29, 2013 – Two leading boating education organizations with a history of making boating education easy and affordable, have teamed up to offer a fully interactive online seminar for those First Mates who may find themselves needing to take command of the family boat. Partner in Command, from the US Power Squadrons (USPS), in partnership with the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety, aims to acquaint the First Mate with basic skills he or she may need in an emergency. The seminar is now available online at www.usps.org/edonline just in time for boating season. The cost is $70 or just $55.30 for members of USPS, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Great Lakes Cruising Club and, for a limited time, BoatUS members.

The US Power Squadrons is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable through teaching boaters courses and seminars covering dozens of topics. To date, over four million boaters have taken a USPS course or seminar. The partnership with the BoatUS Foundation aims to increase the accessibility to boating education courses by tapping into the Foundation’s expertise at presenting engaging and effective course materials for online study at home. Aiming for the 70 million American boaters and millions more worldwide, Partner in Command is just the first seminar to be put online. US Power Squadrons have over 30 advanced courses and seminars taught by local squadrons that will be made available online in the next two to three years. The next offerings will include seminars onBoating on Rivers, Locks and Lakes, and the Using VHF and VHF/DSC Marine Radio, as well as the USPS Seamanship course.

“US Power Squadrons’ mission is to teach boaters how to get more fun out of their boating experience by being more informed, safe and confident,” said USPS Chief Commander John Alter. “We have been doing it for 100 years and no one does it better.”

The BoatUS Foundation has its roots when Boat Owners Association of The United State’s (BoatUS) Founder and Chairman Richard Schwartz testified before Congress in 1969 that led to the watershed Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971. Today, BoatUS’ member-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is a national leader promoting safe, clean and responsible boating, and provides innovative educational outreach directly to boaters and anglers with the aim of reducing accidents and fatalities, The Foundation’s Online Boating Safety Course is the only free, NASBLA-approved online boating safety course in 33states. To date, over onemillion boaters have taken the course.

Mississippi River At Dresbach, Minnesota

New Information On The Houseboat Sinking........

On Memorial Day, 11 people were rescued from the Mississippi River after the houseboat they were aboard hit the side of Lock and Dam No.7 at Dresbach, Minnesota, and began to sink.  A family was waiting to lock through the dam, when the engine stalled.  The pilot tried to maneuver the houseboat away form the dam, but the current was too strong. The passengers were ordered into a lifeboat, which capsized in the current.  Passengers were swept through the roller gates, and all were miraculously rescued........

It is not likely that a proposed $20 million plan for shipping North Dakota crude oil down the Mississippi River will happen after the Missouri Supreme Court ruled against the use of eminent domain by a port authority.  Tuesday's ruling means that the Southeast Regional Port Authority is not able to condemn 30 acres of privately held land, because the port authority failed to show reason for taking the land other than for economic development........

Water Releases Curbed To Limit Flooding........

Following several days of heavy rains across the lower Missouri valley, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reducing the amount of water released from upstream reservoirs, in an effort to curtail flooding.  A week ago, about 24,000 cubic feet of water per day from the Gavins Point Dam.  By Wednesday morning, close to 12,000 cubic feet per second is expected to be released.  It is hoped that the release reductions will curtail flooding downstream........

    Five Traffic Crash Deaths,

One Boating Fatality, &  No Drownings Over Memorial Day Holiday

Five people died in traffic crashes over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend. Last year, nine people were killed during the three-day weekend. During the counting period of 6 p.m., Friday, May 24 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated 274 traffic crashes which included 119 injuries and the five fatalities. Troopers also arrested 129 people for driving while intoxicated. During the 2012 Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Patrol investigated 232 traffic crashes resulting in 95 injuries and five of the nine fatalities. Last year, 184 people were arrested by the Patrol for driving while intoxicated.

There was one boating fatality over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend. Troopers investigated seven boating crashes involving two injuries. There were no drownings. Troopers also arrested 18 people for boating while intoxicated over the holiday weekend. During the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, officers investigated 14 boating crashes, which included six injuries, and zero fatalities. There were no drownings over last year’s Memorial Day weekend. Twenty-four people were arrested for boating while intoxicated during the 2012 holiday.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Problem Solving In Nassau

After our late night on Friday night with Rick, MP, and Danielle at Johnny's nightclub, and our trip to Paradise Beach on Saturday, Sunday was a "down day" for us. The wind was picking up, but we still entertained the idea of going exploring in the dinghy but for one reason or another we just didn't go out.
But, I hated the idea of sitting around all day and getting nothing accomplished in regard to our windlass and steering problems. So, I grabbed my toolbox and took it to the bow and started messing around with the windlass, checking on electrical connections and just looking at it. I had sent an email to my contact at Good Windlass for them to receive first thing after the holiday weekend, outlining just what was going on with the windlass. The idea came to me that perhaps the anchor chain was jammed up too tight and the gears were bound up. I decided to use a large screwdriver and pry the anchor chain out.

I was able to move the chain just a fraction, so I hit the "down" button, and the anchor dropped. Retrieval worked just fine too. At this point I thought that even if the chain was jammed into the windlass, maybe on the previous failures, our low battery voltage was not sending enough juice to the windlass motor to overcome the bound gears. I figured that being plugged into shore power for two days certainly charged our house batteries up enough for the windlass to do its job. I was feeling pretty good about the windlass operation, but made a mental note to avoid running the anchor up too far and jamming the gears in the future.
Another problem surfaced on Sunday afternoon. It was not unexpected. One thing gets fixed and another pops up. This is boat ownership.
Rosie was on the desktop computer in the office and the GFI in "Holly's" bathroom tripped and knocked out the A/C power on the port side of the boat. Back in Foxtown, we had replaced that GFI because it had tripped and I kept resetting the inverter, not knowing the GFI had tripped, and I burnt that GFI beyond recognition.
There are a lot of things plugged into the port side of Swing Set, but they are all low wattage devices like chargers, etc., and normally only one thing or two is ever on at the same time anyway, so I feel that we never exceed the amperage limit on that breaker. The GFI tripping on a receptacle that nothing was plugged into was a head scratcher.
Rosie and I began to systematically plug one thing at a time into that port side A/C system until we found what was tripping the GFI. We found out that the desk top computer was tripping the GFI whenever we plugged it in.
The baffling thing also was that the GFI wouldn't trip if we unplugged from the shore power and ran off of the inverter. Additionally, if I plugged the computer into the GFI on the starboard side of the boat, that GFI wouldn't trip. I suspected an issue with the shore power, so I switched the cords around but that made it worse, the port side GFI wouldn't reset at all when I swapped shore power plugs. I was stumped.
We wanted to salvage the rest of our day, so we decided to go to out to eat. But then it started to rain.

Just read one of the articles on our flood, and the statement said, if the rains continue over the midwest, this flood could be the highest one since 1995. Thank God they didn't say 1993. That will probably be tomorrows talking point. Also they have raised the crest to 33.9- so guess we just take it one day at a time.

Stone Mountain, is a quartz monzonite dome monadnock in Stone Mountain, Georgia, United States. At its summit, the elevation is 1,686 feet (514 m) MSL and 825 feet (251 m) above the surrounding area. Stone Mountain is well-known not only for its geology, but also for the enormous bas-relief on its north face, the largest bas-relief in the world.[1] The carving depicts three figures of the Confederate States of America: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.

Stone Mountain is more than 5 miles (8.0 km) in circumference at its base, and is surrounded by the Stone Mountain Park. The summit of the mountain can be reached by a walk-up trail on the west side of the mountain only, or by the Skyride aerial tram.

Ever since the the Gavins Point Dam was completed in the 1950's, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been concerned with the buildup of sand and silt behind the dam.  In 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had suggested that the Corps take a look at the feasibility of hydraulic flushing to assist habitat development for shorebirds downstream.  Basin stakeholders and the Corps are looking at ways to transport sediment downstream more effectively........

My River Home

My River Home is excited to be open for the Memorial Day Holiday!

St. Louis Dogs will be at the Longshot both Saturday and Sunday evening and it will be open Monday. We are excited for new faces to be working at the Saloon. Some of our old staff is still here, but we have made a few exciting changes, some familiar faces we might add.

Unfortunately the water levels are still high and with the rain this week we are unsure if the bath house will be up and running. Water came back into it so for safety reasons we are still unsure if it will be open for the weekend - Stay tuned for this.

The main entrance is still under water, so this means to use the back entrance by the Service Department. Please be courteous to our neighbor Sioux Harbor as this is a gravel road, so reduce speed to less than 10 mph coming in.

We look forward to a 2013 season and hope to see you and your family and friends soon!

Stay tuned for opening dates for the Ship Store.

We are also still running specials on our 24' dock slips for the year, please call the office at 636.899.0903.

    New Dock Inspection Rules Considered........

Last summer, dock safety became a hot issue following multiple electrocutions at the Lake of the Ozarks.  As a result, there could be changes in the wind for dock inspection requirements within the Osage Beach Fire Protection District.  At this time, current rules require that the docks that are relocated, newly constructed or upgraded be issued a permit and be updated to current standards for electrical connection.  Proposed changes would include dock transfers as well........

Just When You Think Things Are Going Well

We left Rock Sound Harbour at 7:30 A.M. on Friday morning. The wind had let up and there were a few clouds around but the skies were not as threatening as the day before. We had a 40 mile run to Highbourne Cay, an island on the upper end of the Exumas.
We had been about an hour out, running in deep blue ocean a half mile deep, and the steering started feeling "funny". Eventually, it was feeling not very funny at all. Our steering was failing us at a rapid rate meaning we had a leak somewhere in the hydraulic system.
We could have turned around and went to one of the marinas on the southern end of Eleuthera, but as I had mentioned, a weather system was coming in and we didn't want to get stuck in southern Eleuthera for who knows how long. Better to be out in the middle of the ocean with no steering, right?
No steering on a twin engine boat will not leave you stranded, I normally don't even touch the wheel in close situations, but it does get more serious if the water is rough. Also, traveling at idle speeds across miles and miles of open ocean gets rather tedious.
I kept our speed up to our normal 8-9 miles per hour and used engine throttle on one engine or the other to maintain our course. At one point I tried putting the boat on plane, thinking torque against the rudders would increase our ability to steer, but the attempt had the opposite effect and I could spin the wheel around and around and nothing would happen.
I'd say we were pretty happy to see Highbourne Cay when it came in sight, but we still had the challenge of getting through Highbourne Cut with a following sea, toward rocks and reef, without be able to steer as well as I would have liked. There is a dogleg coming in from the ocean and I had all I could do to keep us off the rocks. You could say I was nervous.
We made it inside the reef and I called Highbourne Cay Marina and told them we were coming in for fuel and that our steering "was compromised". I had decided that I wasn't going to say that I had no steering as I was concerned that we wouldn't get clearance to enter the harbor.
