Paddlefish a challenge for anglers, a boost for Warsaw businesses

Warsaw, Mo. – Paddlefish are an ancient creature playing a modern role in Missouri. The fish that swam when dinosaurs roamed provide a rewarding challenge for anglers, and a financial boost for Warsaw -- the community billed as the “Paddlefish Capitol of the World.”

Paddlefish grow to huge sizes even though their food is tiny zooplankton that they filter from the water. Missouri’s state record paddlefish topped 139 pounds. With their long, flattened snouts stretching out the body length, they’re truly a trophy fish.

“That’s why anglers flock to Warsaw in early spring,” said Trish Yasger, a fisheries management biologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) who oversees its paddlefish management program. “Where else is a 40-pound fish considered small? There’s a possibility of getting one over 100 pounds. Sixty-pound paddlefish are not uncommon, and people catch 80-pound fish.”

Anglers drag hooks on the bottom to snag paddlefish, and it takes heavy tackle to land the big ones. But fishing where paddlefish numbers are highest also improves chances for success.

Warsaw is on the upper end of Lake of the Ozarks but not far below the outlet from the dam for Truman Lake. Paddlefish migrate upstream from both lakes in the Osage River basin in an attempt to spawn. But dams block spawning migration routes and lakes cover traditional gravel bars where females laid eggs. MDC sustains the fishery by stocking thousands of young paddlefish in the lakes.

Paddlefish snagging is also a strong tradition at Osceola, Mo., on the upper end of Truman Lake. Plus, MDC has created a paddlefish fishery with stocking at Table Rock Lake.

For cities near spring paddlefish spawning runs, the fishery brings a financial bonus. Reservoir communities are accustomed to welcoming tourists and anglers in late spring and summer. But the paddlefish snagging season from March 15 through April 30 occurs when the weather isn’t always warm and welcoming. Yet thousands of anglers arrive.

“We get a lot of people coming into town to catch paddlefish,” said Betty Mewszel, director for the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce. “They come in from all over the state and from other states. Of course, they eat in our restaurants, and they’ve got to sleep somewhere. They buy gas and groceries. After March 15, our harbor and ramp fills up with boats and trailers.”

Paddlefish hatched and raised at MDC’s Blind Pony Fish Hatchery and stocked in the lakes make a vibrant sport fishery possible. Some natural reproduction may be occurring during some years in the upper Osage River tributaries, Yasger said. But most fish caught come from the MDC hatchery.

Warsaw’s location makes it a hotspot for paddlefish snagging. The fish thrive in Lake of the Ozarks, she said. But in the upstream spawning migration, they are blocked by the dam for Truman Lake just upstream from Warsaw. The fish congregate in the lake near the city.

“It’s our best paddlefish snagging location in Missouri,” Yasger said, “and it’s one of the best in the United States.”

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa

     River Drive Will Reopen Wednesday........

This week, the flood protection barriers along River Drive in Davenport are being removed, allowing the road to reopen by Wednesday. The barrier held back the Mississippi River at 19.12 feet. In Moline, River Drive was slated to open Monday. By early next week, the Mississippi River is expected to rise by about two feet in Minnesota, but this shouldn't cause issues in the Quad Cities region........

Guess one of the "ifs" happened, as they have changed the river forecast. Not a lot, but a change. Today Sunday, we are 34.16 Thursday we will be 32.1 We was suppose to be 31.3- so quite a change. Friday we are to be 31.5. So guess the rain changed the forecast some. Highway C has water on the road just past the S curves. It has fell some. Over on silver road, it went over the levee on Hw C. so quite a bit of water over there. Can get down Silver road to where the levee goes over the road, On the other side, all water. Lots of the farmers raised their levees, water went over them anyway. Lots of water has to make its way back tto the river. Need to really think positive thoughts.

Illinois River Near Havana, Illinois

    Wildlife Areas Could Store Floodwaters........

Recently, Michael Reuter, director of The Nature Conservancy's North American Freshwater Program and Great Rivers Partnership stated that the record flooding along the Illinois River should not leave any lasting effects on restoration efforts on the Emiquon flood plain. Wednesday, water began to overtop the south end of the Thompson Lake Levee. The levee had been built to hold river levels of 27 feet. As of Thursday afternoon, the Illinois River at Havana was 27.75 feet........

"The Whale" And On To Marsh Harbor

I had said we had two options to get from Green Turtle Cay to Marsh Harbor. They were taking the Whale Cay Cut, or taking the Don't Rock Passage. The other option I didn't mention was a shallow, twisty passage just west of Whale Cay, and that is what I thought we would try, considering we would be going at high tide. But I wasn't ready for what we found.
On Sunday morning we got up early and had a nice breakfast of a spinach and bacon cheese omelet with a side of Bahamian Bread, toasted. Don't forget a couple cups of hot coffee.
A sailboat had just pulled anchor that was anchored in front of us and I called him on the VHF. He had just come through the Whale Cut at noon on the day before and although he said it was "bumpy", he thought it wasn't too bad. I knew he came through in much greater wind than we had this morning, and he also said we would have better conditions going through than he did, if we left now. We were pulling anchor as I spoke to him, and we headed out.
"The Whale" is a narrow cut that dumps deep ocean water onto a shallow area of the Sea of Abacos. The swells roll in, even in good conditions, and they rage in bad conditions. A strong northerly wind, coupled with an outgoing tide, result in breakers that will wreak havoc with even the largest of vessels. My approach was to get a visual on any breakers before we committed the boat to the cut.
When we made our turn to pass through the cut, we could see that the ocean wasn't breaking in the channel, but the swells were big, the biggest we had encounter so far. But since there were no waves breaking, our curling over, I figured we had a shot. I also realized why taking the Don't Rock Passage, or the Whale Cay Passage, were equally treacherous; trying to negotiate a shallow and twisty passage with the giant swells would be tricky. I considered that attacking the swells head on in a straight line to be our best chance.
When we passed through the cut we only rang the ships bell twice, but sea spray was blowing over the top of the bimini. We had our isinglass closed, and we stayed dry and nobody barfed, but I had a grip on the wheel just trying to keep us on a straight course. I know now that if we ever encounter waves taller than the boat, I will simply crap my pants.
After getting through the cut, we had to make a turn to the south and take on beam seas to head for the Loggerhead Cut. The Loggerhead Cut was dredged over 20 years ago to make a channel for cruise ships transiting the cays in this area, but the route was abandoned soon after because it was too dangerous. As we were headed for the Loggerhead Channel, we could see a huge wreck in our path that wasn't on any chart we had. I wasn't sure if it was in our way or not, until we came right up on it.
With the swells to our stern, we glided into the Loggerhead Channel, keeping distance from the old steel posts that used to mark the channel. Once we got Guana Cay on our port side, the seas calmed and we made a beeline to Marsh Harbor, eight miles away, but I was a nervous wreck.

John's Boat Harbor

As is common among river boaters when one is in trouble another will come to their aid. Some have been displaced from their normal abodes and others have stepped up and offered them shelter. Looks like Zulu is taking care of perimeter security while Charlie is keeping an eye on things inside the compound, a necessity when Captain Carl is cooking!

Green Turtle Cay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coordinates: 26°46′N 77°19′W

Green Turtle Cay is an island in The Bahamas. It is located in the "Abaco Out Islands" and is 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1/2 mile wide. It was named after the abundance of green turtles that inhabited the area. The population of the island is about 450 and its main settlement is New Plymouth which was founded in the 18th century. The architecture of the older homes in the village is unique in the Bahamas, with steep-pitched roofs, originating with settlers from New England.

New Plymouth contains a post office, a bank, a customs and immigration office, four grocery stores, several restaurants, bars, and churches and there is a museum featuring the paintings of noted Bahamian painter Alton Lowe.

While cars are allowed on the island, golf carts and bicycles are the usual mode of transport. Both are easily rented for those visiting the island.

Green Turtle Cay is known for its excellent beaches and has several full-service hotel-resorts with boat marinas. These are Bluff House and the Green Turtle Club. There is also a boat repair yard with haul-out slips. Green Turtle Cay is a stopover-point for southbound vessels during periods of rage seas in the Whale Cay Passage.

A Couple of Stops and Then Green Turtle Cay

Seven or eight miles to the southeast from Allans-Pennsecola Cay was Crab Cay, or one of them. There are at least a couple of Crab Cays on the charts for this area. We took a slow cruise to Crab Cay and anchored in a calm spot within view of the first beach lined with palm trees that we have seen occurring naturally since we've arrived in The Bahamas.
Between Crab Cay and Great Abacos Island was a small inlet leading to the Sea of Abaco. In our anchorage we had a view through the cut where we could watch boats travel from the Sea of Abaco into the Little Bahama Bank.
We took the dinghy out to explore but were soon battling a strong outgoing tide as we were making our way into a creek system leading into the island of Little Abacos, which is adjacent to Great Abacos Island. A combination of enough throttle to keep forward momentum, plus shallower and shallower water, with a rocky bottom, was not my idea of a good thing to be doing, so we turned around and headed for some calm water just inside the inlet leading out to the Sea.
I donned my snorkel gear and spear to inspect an area below a rock shelf in very shallow water and found an abundance of snapper. I speared a larger one on the first try and proudly took it back to the dinghy where Rosie and Holly were waiting, and I put it in a bucket that I had brought along for this very purpose.
My activity in the shallow water stirred up the fine sand, or mud, so seeing more fish became a problem. I tried to spear another fish, but missed him, when I saw a nice sized "summer crab" and nabbed him, cleaned him, and added him to the bucket. Two sea creatures in one day is a record for me, so we high tailed it back to the boat to get my catch in the fridge and away from any prying eyes.
I placed the snapper on my cutting board and it took one flip and went right back into the water and swam away. It took me a few moments to reflect on this event. No tears were shed, although tears were warranted.

  Mississippi River Levels

     Water Levels Start To Fall.........

The Mississippi River has been close to record lows for the better part of the winter. However, earlier this month, heavy rains fell for several days, pushing the Mississippi River above flood stage in parts of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. The rain has caused some major flooding between the Quad Cities to St. Louis. In the Riverbend, Alton and Grafton has seen the Mississippi River about 10 feet above flood stage. Officials state that the sandbags will remain up in case of future flooding........

River Levels Dropping, Extent Of Damage Determined Later........

It is likely that when the Mississippi River fully recedes, it will take months to determine the extent of damage caused by the high water levels. Mike O'Connell of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency stated that damage assessments cannot start until the river recedes, but the river is expected to stay above flood stage well into next month. Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Raw Sewage Spilling Into Mississippi River........

On Sunday, two of three pumps failed at the Bissell Point Wastewater Treatment Plant located in North St. Louis. The failure is causing approximately 105 million gallons of sewage to spill into the Mississippi River each day. Illinois Flooding

    More Flooding Likely........

The rain has stopped falling across Illinois, and the rivers have crested. Those storms, however, brought snow to northern states. This weekend, the temperatures are forecast to be in the 70s, which will cause the snow to melt, and runoff into the Mississippi River. By the first weekend in May, the Quad Cities will see the Mississippi River rise. Further downstream, the water will back up into the Rock and Illinois Rivers........
