The Picture of the Day....was sent to us by Guy Unverferth

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to share a couple of pics with you. The first one is our daughter Amanda who turns 10 in a couple of weeks and is very excited about this boating season. We haven’t made it out yet this year but it won’t be long. The other picture is of our 1993 SeaRay which will be 20 years old this year and still looking great. We adopted her from some nice river boaters out of Lake Center shortly after Amanda was born and has been a wonderful boat for all of us over the years.

Not sure if out picture is formatted correctly but we’d love to see our SeaRay on the Riverbills banner someday. She doesn’t have an official name, but this year she’ll be the “Birthday Girl”.

Thanks.
Guy, Mary and Amanda Unverferth

River Bill:

It was a wonderful weekend out on the river! (4-01-12)  When I'm not on the water, I teach English to foreign students. This weekend, I invited one of my students from South Korea out on our boat. She stayed out with us all day. When I asked what she thought about it, she said, "It's like a dream!" I think she is definitely hooked on the river! We hope you and everyone else enjoyed the weather!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stated that they are keeping the amount of water released into the Missouri River from upstream reservoirs at minimum levels due to continuing drought conditions in the region. The Corps will release just enough water to maintain a minimum channel for barge traffic on the Missouri River above St. Louis. It is expected that runoff into the Missouri River basin will be about 81% of normal this year........

First tow breaks through Lake Pepin, arrives in St. Paul

The first up-bound tow of the 2013 navigation season crushed through more than 12 to 16 inches of ice at Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River early in the morning on Monday, April 8.

The Motor Vessel Roberta Tabor, a tow owned by American River Transportation Company in St. Louis, locked through the Corps' Lock and Dam 2 in Hastings, Minn., shortly after 8 p.m., en route to St. Paul, Minn. The motor vessel was pushing 12 barges.

Lake Pepin is the last part of the river to break up, because the river is wider and subsequently the current is slower there than it is at other reaches of the river. If a tow can make it through Lake Pepin, it can make it all the way to St. Paul.

The average opening date of the navigation season for the last 30 years has been March 20. Last year, the Motor Vessel Deana Ann was the first up-bound tow to pass through Lake Pepin. She arrived March 17.

The Corps considers the first tow to arrive at Lock and Dam 2 as the unofficial start of the navigation season because it means all of its locks are available to commercial and recreational vessels. The earliest date for an up-bound tow to reach Lock and Dam 2 was March 4, in 1983, 1984 and 2000. The latest arrival date unrelated to flooding was April 4, 2008. Historic flooding in 2001 delayed the arrival of the first tow until May 11.

Don’t be fooled by warmer weather, the water is still cold

As air temperatures around the area get warmer more and more recreational boaters are taking to the water. The Coast Guard cautions boaters not to be fooled by the warmer air temperatures; the water is still cold, very cold.

Every year the Coast Guard responds to cold water accidents resulting in the untimely deaths of unsuspecting boaters.

The sudden immersion in cold water can result in hypothermia and death.

Hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature falls below its normal level of 98.6°F to 95°F or cooler.

Hypothermia is dangerous because it affects the body’s core – the brain, heart, lungs, and other vital organs. Even a mild case of hypothermia affects your physical and mental abilities, and increases the risk of accidents. Severe hypothermia causes loss of consciousness and may result in death. Cold water is especially dangerous because loss of body heat occurs 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air.

The Coast Guard strongly urges the public to wear life jackets anytime while out on the water and to check weather conditions before heading out. Having proper survival gear while underway and filing a float plan with a friend or family member is strongly recommended.

We have never towed a kayak before, but I guess there is no job too small!

     Corps Testing Dam Spillway........

While the flooding of 2011 challenged the unique spillway at the Gavins Point Dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has seen no indication of damage to the underwater spillway. The Corps is continuing testing at the spillway in order to gather more information about the condition of the spillway. Following last month's testing, 22 pressure gauges were installed to allow engineers to continue their studies........

Boat Manufacturer

Jacobs Considered Purchasing Cabo And Hatteras........

Recently, Irwin Jacobs set out to clear the air about rumors that he was interested in buying Cabo and Hatteras form Brunswick Corp. Jacobs stated that he did take a serious look at the companies. Back in February, Jacobs had stated that he was not negotiating to purchase the boat brands that Brunswick had put up for sale in January. A former Hatteras CEO had headed up a group that included Jacobs in an unsuccessful bid to purchase the companies........

Pelicans Enjoy Kaskaskia River

Kaskaskia River – The American White Pelicans have returned to the Kaskaskia River Project on their way north to their spring nesting areas. Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, is one of the largest birds in North America. These large and plump birds have an overall length between 50–70 inches, a wingspan of 9-10 feet, and average weight between 11 and 20 lbs. This primarily white bird has black-tipped wings, and a yellow bill that measures up to 15 inches in length.

The Kaskaskia River provides ideal resting habitat for the migrating American White Pelican. Large flocks can be spotted in numerous places along the Kaskaskia River with the best viewing at Kaskaskia Lock and Dam, near Modoc. You will rarely see just one pelican in an area. Ideally they work together to corral fish to each other. While sometimes in deep water this is not easily possible for them and therefore one may prefer to forage alone. Unlike the Brown Pelican (P.occidentalis), the American White Pelican does not dive for its food. Instead it catches its prey while swimming.

The American White Pelican winter on the Gulf Coast, California, and Mexico. During the spring they migrate to their summer nestling areas in the Great Plains and Great Basin. The White Pelican migrates February through early April, and again October through November.

For more information on pelican viewing please contact Kaskaskia River Project Office at (618) 284-7160 or e-mail at KaskyL&D@usace.army.mil

A Pirate Sails Away
When John and I started the platform project it was always my responsibility to do the paint work.
I remember John saying " I'll make it strong --- You make it pretty " . So with the final welding done
it's off to the paint shop to make it pretty.

First thing after removing the platform from the boat for the last time is to fabricate a stand to get it through the paint shop on. My idea is to use PVC tubing on top of a bed dolly, it definitely holds it steady and at just the right height.

The photo above shows the platform primed , block sanded and ready to be painted .

Upper Mississippi River Cruising

    River Cruise Line Weathers Recession........

The recession has cut a swath in the pleasure cruise industry, and Upper Mississippi River cruise line Padelford Packet Boat Co. was no exception. Finances are improving, after the company's revenues plummeted by over one third. Following 2008, vacationing families that had embarked on Padelford's sight-seeing tours dwindled, but the biggest cause to declining revenues was the decrease in corporate events. For the first time in five years, the company is considering expanding.......

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

North and South Bimini

This photo is looking south from the South Bimini Island, actually from the tiki hut at Mackies Sand Bar at the Bimini Sands Beach Club, but more about that later.
My blogs may not contain as many pictures as I'd like to publish while we are here in The Bahamas. Our current data plan only allows 800 MBs of data transfer per month, while this is an upgrade from the plan we instituted last week, it's still falls way short of what I'd prefer. We'll save data transfer on our MiFi device for email, weather, and an occasional blog, hopefully at least once per week. Less pictures, and smaller ones, will allow us to retain the data transfer for the services we really need.
After finding out at BaTelCo that we couldn't put their SIM card in our iPad, another boater at the Bimini Blue Water Resort came by late on Friday afternoon and announced that he had just gotten a SIM card installed in his iPad at the local BaTelCo store in Alice Town, and he now has 1 Gig of data transfer, at a cost of $20, plus the cost of the SIM card of $14. I suspect that our boater friend had been imbibing some Kalik's, in fact, a few of them, but I don't dispute his claim in general, but I feel like I need to visit the BaTelCo store in Alice Town again on Monday.
So, for this reason, and one other, we are still in Bimini. The other reason, is that I had been watching the weather all week, and the calm period due to arrive today did arrive, but is only to last a day or two. This is plenty of time for us to travel the 80+ miles to Great Harbor in the Northern Berry Islands, but the waves were still to be coming from the North, meaning at least a 3 foot beam sea on our port side for a whole day, not a pleasant situation. Weighing all these things, plus our rule of not venturing out on purpose when the wind exceeds 15 miles per hour, we decided that hanging out here in Bimini is not a bad thing, only we wanted a change of scenery

Hi Bill,

Charles Hopkins, aka "Hoppie," helps tie up a barge which was coming in to
change shifts. Hoppie's Marina on the Mississippi River in Kimmswick, Mo.,
has been a popular stop for boaters for several decades. Hoppie and his wife
Fern are great hosts for many travelers. People from around the world have
traveled the Mississippi River by boat and often visit historic Kimmswick
for lunch, dinner, shopping and touring. The marina is a short walk from the
shopping district.

See you on the river!

Mississippi River Near Hartford, Illinois

Boat Capsized, Search On For Missing Anglers........

On Saturday afternoon, a fishing boat capsized in the Mississippi River near Hartford, Illinois.  A Valero barge crew was able to pull a 10 year old boy from the water.  Two men are missing, however.  Eleven area rescue teams were called out, but high winds and wave action caused rescue operations to be halted at 6 pm Saturday.  It is reported that winds were gusting up to 40 mph.  This and the 3 - 4 foot waves are believed to have caused the capsizing........

Recently, Professor Jim Garvey, director of the fisheries and aquaculture at Southern Illinois University Carbondale stated that the concerns over the Asian carp invasion into the Great Lakes are not unfounded.  He added that the carp multiply fairly consistently in the mid Mississippi River, keeping pace with the numbers removed by harvest.  Another concern is the speed that the carp migrate upstream........

Since the Asian carp found their way into the Mississippi River watershed, they have steadily made their upstream en-route to the Great Lakes. New studies are saying that there are already Asian carp in the Great Lakes, as carp DNA has been found in water samples........

Mississippi River Water Trail Association

   Poker Paddle

Hi!

On April 27, the Mississippi River Water Trail Association is sponsoring a Poker Paddle. I think it’ll be a blast! Information for you is attached and we hope that you will feel free to forward or distribute copies of this to anyone who might be interested. We have put a lot of thought into making this fun for the players (7 cards!) with a great stretch of river.

For those with little or no experience paddling big rivers we would like to suggest a very comfortable and entertaining excursion in a big voyager canoe with professional guides/paddlers provided by Big Muddy Adventures. Players paddle as much as they find enjoyable and comfortable.

The link for the registration page is https://alpineshop.webconnex.com/mwta-poker-paddle-2013

Other info: See attached flyer. Mandatory Safety meeting at 12:30 P.M. at Pere Marquette State Park . Turn in hands by 5 P.M. at Grafton Landing.

See you on the water! Feel free to email me if you have any questions or suggestions for us: science@twillman.com is my address.

Joan Twillman

P.S. I’m the kayaker who paddles near Portage Island year ‘round.

Angler lands two three-pound crappie from lakes at MDC Reed Area

Lee’s Summit, Mo. – Two trophy crappie topping three pounds were nice, but angler Lindsay Cundiff believes more big ones swim in the same waters. Cundiff caught the two whopper crappie in early February from lakes at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area.
This April, he’s back on the banks casting jigs and hoping for another lunker crappie.
“I plan on seeing if I can catch some more,” said Cundiff, of Lee’s Summit. “A friend of mine caught one this week that measured 13 inches, so there are some big ones out here,” he said on April 5.
Cundiff declined to reveal exactly which lake he was fishing at when he caught the two big ones. The Reed Area has 11 fishable lakes and ponds, and the largest two lakes are each 42 acres. But he will say he was using a 1/32-ounce, black and chartreuse tube jig with a white head floating under a bobber. He cast the rig to near a tree in a cove.
“I caught the first big one on a Monday on one side of the tree,” Cundiff said, “and I caught the other fish on a Wednesday on the other side of the tree.”

Both fish were taken to the MDC Kansas City Regional Office at the Reed Area. MDC Fisheries Biologist Bob Mattucks measured both fish at 16.7 inches. One weighed 3.15 pounds, the other weighed 3.10 pounds. Scales from the fish were checked to measure age, and both fish were six years old.
Three-pound crappie are an uncommon catch, as not many reach that size and wind up being caught by an angler.
“For somebody to catch a couple that big in a small lake, that is unusual,” Mattucks said.
The Reed Area lakes have produced big early season crappie before. In 2011, two anglers braved a snowy day in late February to try out some home-tied jigs. They caught crappie, including one topping three pounds and another topping two pounds. Both anglers were surprised that urban lakes that get steady fishing pressure in summer could produce such big crappie.
Good management of fish habitat produces good fishing. In late winter, some luck with weather patterns can lead to big fish.
Lakes at the Reed Area have been renovated to boost fishing, Mattucks said. Submerged humps were created as extra spawning areas. Brush placed in the lake provides habitat for sport fish and the smaller bait fish they feed on. Some fish find all the shelter and food they need away from angling pressure, and that lets them grow into lunkers.
However, in late winter, some shallow areas, especially those with brush, will warm up quicker than the deep water. In small lakes, this often attracts fish into shallow areas, Mattucks said. That includes lunkers.
“Even a difference of a degree or so can matter, as the fish like the warmer water and that’s where the food is,” he said.
As more water warms during early spring, fish will disperse back out into deeper waters. However, when water temperatures rise in late spring, the fish will move back into shallow areas to spawn. Summer warm ups will find them seeking the cooler, deeper water.
Crappie populations tend of vary in the lakes at the Reed area, Mattucks said. Anglers catch fewer crappie in some lakes but those caught can be large, while other lakes produce good numbers of crappie but few lunkers. The lakes that tend to produce the bigger fish include Jackrabbit, Bodarc and Cottontail. Lakes with good numbers include Gopher, Catclaw and Nell.

For more information about fishing at the Reed Area, go to www.on.mo.gov/XtRJGy.

The Pictures of the Day....were sent to us by capt'n Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat..... Whoz Yer Daddy

Bill,

We just completed a 2 year restoration and wanted to share some pictures. "Sue-Bee" is a 1958 Bowman 16' runabout. She's powered by a 1957 Johnson 35HP Sea Stallion and sits on a 1955 Gator trailer. The interesting thing about this particular boat is the construction. It was built by Goodyear Aerospace by using heat formed vacuum plastic for the hull (very hi-tech for the era) and then fitted out with a wooden deck and interior, This is the only specimen of it's kind we have seen and that is what makes it so unique. The last picture was taken today and it is of her departure from Ole Boys (Dale Roth's shop in St. Paul). Never mind what's in the styrofoam cups, some will say it's Crown Royal but that is just a rumor!

Hi, Bill,

We had a great time and great food at the Boathouse on Sunday, We had lunch at the table next to Smash, the well known St. Louis radio personality and band leader who was there with his lovely wife Deb. They were there checking out the place for their upcoming gig on May 26. That's Mary and her dad, Ed, with Smash on the deck at the Boathouse. Smash was very accommodating and a true gentleman when I asked him to pose for a couple of pictures with us.

Then we have the lovely Toni Luttrell holding a picture of the Y2Katy, which will be hanging on the wall with the other boats by the time you get this.
And I had to throw in one shot of me just chillin' on the river.

Check out the next pic.... WiFi at Lake Center! Now we won't miss the weekend editions of RiverBills.com.

Thanks for the website, and see ya on the river,

Upper Mississippi River

Spring Is Near, Tugs Moving Up River........

Last Friday, three tugboats and a small crane barge were the first commercial traffic along the Upper Mississippi River this year. As of last Friday, there was 2 feet of ice on Lake Pepin, keeping the Upper Mississippi River barge shipping season from starting. The Corps uses the ice on Lake Pepin as a gauge for safe barge traffic. Barges and tows do not head up river until the thickness of the ice is 8 - 12 inches........

River History....

April 05, 1998 in River History

Three barges crashed into the Admiral casino docked on the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis on Saturday night, setting it adrift with about 2,500 people on board for more than two hours.

The accident happened after a towboat that was pushing 12 barges crashed into a bridge near the Gateway Arch, causing four of the barges to break loose.

No one was seriously injured, but five or six people required medical treatment.

The Admiral, had no engines and it floated downstream for about 500 feet before the towboat caught up with it and held it in place against the river bank. Other towboats secured the four loose as well as the eight barges that the towboat had to release to assist the Admiral. One barge sank.

People on the Admiral were transferred 200 at a time to two excursion boats and taken to shore. The last of the passengers were taken to shore at about 10:30 P.M.
