We encourage interested parties to register as soon as possible for the May classes.

Course Preregistration is necessary. Sign up or for more information by dropping by Grafton Harbor, or calling Jan at 618-786-7678 or by contacting Mark at msz@charter.net or cell phone number 314-803-7044.

Boater Education Saves Lives

Missouri’s Mandatory Boater Education Law requires that every Missouri resident born after January 1, 1984 who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes must carry a boating safety identification card issued by the State Water Patrol and a valid photo ID. This includes personal watercraft like Jet-Skis. The Boating Safety ID Card indicates successful completion of a boating safety education course. Illinois and many other states have similar requirements.

Successful completion of this course will not only earn the Boating Safety ID Card, but will also give you invaluable information which will help you to remain safe on the water. Whether you are required by law to take the course or not, Boating Safety Education will help you be a better, safer boater. Insurers recognize this and most offer a discount on your insurance for completing the course.

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

I'd like to thank you for the great Lock and Damn class (even though the wickets were down at both locks!) and your web page for all the useful information that helped make this trip happen.

Colton Raines, Cole Boyer and Skyler Shepard were traveling in a speedboat, when the vessel ran over molecular biologist Ester Fujimoto, catching her with the propeller. Fujimoto was badly cut up and bled to death as the men in the boat sped off........

The Pictures of the Day.... was sent to us by Ann Fleming who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Hey Dad,

Wanted to share a few pictures on this very White Spring Day. The first one is of "My Little River Dawgs." Izzy & Lil Bit on their boat "Haulin Paws." Which was taken last summer behind Two Branch Island on 6-30-12. The little dogs love just hanging out on their boat when we all are relaxing in the water.

The second picture is of My Grand Daughter - Dakota, Who is RiverBills Great Grand Daughter. Dakota who is now 5 months old, and will soon be taking her first Boat Ride. She will become a true River Rat this summer and is a 4th generation Boater.

This Boater does when we get 12.5 inches on snow the first weekend of Spring.

What else do you do with 12.5 inches of snow..... Think Spring!

See you soon!

Hi Bill,

We went out for a cruise Sunday. Didn't see a lot of boats (or aircraft), so if you need to fill some space here are some boring pictures. We had a leisurely lunch at Kinder's, That's Mary, Tammy and Chris enjoying the sunshine, a cold beverage and the view from the deck.

That's me waving the hat I won at RiverBills Eagle watching party (the sun was in Mary's eyes, she wanted a hat). Kinder's had a good crowd, a lot of bikers coming over on the ferry and a couple of boats other than the Y2Katy.

After lunch we anchored for awhile near Two Branch, then on the way back, cruised past North Shore and the Boathouse. It looks like they had a good crowd, too.

See ya on the river!

Black River In Butler County, Missouri

Stranded Boaters Rescued From Black River........

On Tuesday, two anglers were fishing on the Black River, when they found themselves in the water. Apparently, the vessel snagged a branch, and then the current took over. A nearby resident heard the men yelling for help and called in rescue crews. A neighbor heard the commotion, got his son, hopped in their boat and went after the anglers. Crews were able to get the men off the boat and onto dry land. The fishermen were in the water for about 45 minutes........

News Release From BoatUS

Tom Murray of Virginia Institute of Marine Science Honored with BoatUS Access Award

Economist is Longtime Advocate of Working Waterfronts

TACOMA, Wash., March 27, 2013 – Dr. Thomas J. Murray, an economist with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), was honored with a BoatUS Recreational Boating Access Award in recognition of his commitment to keeping the nation’s waterfronts at work for recreational boating and championing water-dependent businesses and industry that drives local economic development.

Murray serves as VIMS’s Associate Director for Advisory Services and as Extension Program Leader for Virginia Sea Grant.

In 2007, Murray conceived and co-chaired the first national conference examining water access, “At a time when boaters were losing slip space to residential development, and public marinas and other boating services were being forced off the waterfront,” said BoatUS Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs Ryck Lydecker, who presented the award today to Murray at the 2013 National Working Waterfronts and Waterways Symposium in Tacoma, Washington. Murray’s work on that first successful watershed boating access event inspired a second such national symposium, in Maine, 2010, as well as today’s 2013 Symposium.

“Any time someone mentions economics and boating in the same breath, Tom’s name is always the first one that comes to my mind. But the experience, wisdom, and collaborative spirit that he brings as an advocate of the boating industry goes far behind just economics. He truly has dedicated his career and life to boating and so many of us have benefitted from his work,” added Lydecker.

As an economist and business specialist, Murray is credited with bringing together previously competing interests to preserve coastal access in Virginia and nationwide. He helped facilitate the establishment of marine trades organizations and curricula at local community colleges, and revived the Virginia Marine Trades Association. In 2010, VIMS recognized him for his outstanding work in reaching out and providing advisory services to Virginia’s coastal businesses and communities.

Murray has also helped secure federal grant funds which have resulted in a number of new facilities benefiting cruising boaters on the Chesapeake Bay, and has authored many economic impact studies and reports on subjects such as the economic impact of the Miami Boat Show and boater spending in Virginia. He is a member of the Federal Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) review committee, which funds transient boating facilities, and is an advocate of clean marina programs.

At VIMS, Murray continues to disseminate practical information to policy makers and boating professionals alike, while at home he proudly helms his Boston Whaler center console outboard fishing boat that he uses in the waters of Virginia’s Middle Peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay.

For more information on Mr. Murray, go to http://www.vims.edu/research/units/centerspartners/map/people/murray_t.php.

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa

Fish Kills Reported In Quad Cities Area........

There have been several fish kills reported along the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities area recently. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the media have been getting calls from concerned citizens about the dead fish washing up on shore. The fish are gizzard shad, and the fish kills are a seasonal occurrence. It turns out that the gizzard shad are rather intolerant of extreme temperature changes........

The Picture of the Day.... was sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

River Bill,

We saw this cruising up the river last Saturday. I had no idea what it was but it looked interesting so I took a photo of it and asked my brother. I thought you might find my brother Larry's explanation of this interesting. Larry is a Boilermaker. No not from Purdue, a real Boilermaker. Dig this. He did maintenance on the exterior of the old smoke stacks at the Portage Electric plant. He is the smartest guy I know and I am fortunate to have him for a brother. Check out his explanation of this.

Mike,

This is a Ball Mill or a Rotary kiln being sent out for repair. Ball mills are used to grind Coal to a powder to be burnt in a large Fire box at an Electric Plant.
Rotary kilns are fired and rotated to dry and grind Portland cement, into a powder to be bagged, or shipped by rail. The item on the barge appears to be damaged in the center, the shiny ring on the ends is where the rolling motors turn the wheels that turn the cylinder that action keeps that part shiny.

Nice catch, with Love Bro. Larry

Hey Bill,

I wanted to say hi to all our river friends that we don't get to see as much as we would like since we moved our boat to Kentucky lake.

Attached is a photo of the new Blonde Moment that Christine and I bought last year from Winthrop harbor (Lake Michigan) that we tripped 700 plus miles to Ky.

This is Saturday in Smith bay on Kentucky Lake.

Happy spring!
