A Mariner's Tradition

Burning of the Socks Signifies

Goodbye Socks... HELLO SPRING !

“The tradition dates back to the mid-1980s when Bob Turner, then manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard, got tired of the winter blahs. He’d spent the whole season working on OPBs (other peoples’ boats), all the while collecting metal filings, bottom paint grindings, sawdust, fiberglass fibers, and globs of paint, caulk, resin and filler in his socks. On the first day of spring one year, he took off his socks, put them in a paint tray, doused them with lighter fluid, and toasted spring with a longneck beer while they burned.

Traditionally, die-hard boaters wear deck shoes sans socks from the Vernal Equinox until winter arrives.*

The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Robert Ouellette and Cheri Napoliton who hail out of North Shore Marina....... Indecision

Hi Bill

Robert Ouellette and Cheri Napoliton sending you some beautiful pictures of some pelican just floating down the river yesterday, Wednesday, March 13 2013 it is really so beautiful to see these birds just floating fast down the river right here at North Shore Marina. This was taken right from our aft deck of the new Carver we just bought. The Bald eagle picture was taken Sunday, March 10th. He was sitting up in the tree there and when I blew up the picture I had noticed a fish he had caught for his dinner. Just beautiful nature at it's best!!!!

The 1991 42 foot Carver I am sending was purchased a couple weeks ago and is our new home now at North Shore. We are enjoying living on the boat, it's exciting for both of us!!! Oh yes that is Rich Luttrell at the helm bringing "Indecision" to her new home for us!!!

Thanks Bill just thought I would share some great pictures you can share with everyone else that enjoys your page so much!! Thanks for having your page. Love all the info you give us!!!

Hi Bill !

Here's a sunset photo I took at Ditto Landing in Huntsville, Alabama, last weekend. I was visiting Captain Jay Laymon who brought his boat down from St. Paul, Minnesota. It's a really pretty place, the people are friendly and the fishing is great!

See you on the river!

Boat Gas News

Experts Say E10 Bad, E15 Worse........

Back in January, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency approved the sale of E15 fuel for passenger vehicles. The EPA does not consider boats to be passenger vehicles. The American Petroleum Institute is fighting the EPA's approval of the sale of E15, pointing out that numerous studies and tests cite ethanol-blended fuels as the cause of damage to engine components. The API appealed the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court........

The First Day of Spring

     The Vernal Equinox

Spring begins with the vernal equinox at 7:02 A.M. (EDT) on March 20, 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere. Here’s more about the start of spring, signs of spring, and stunning spring photos!

The Vernal Equinox

Ah, spring! This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna.

The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

Mississippi River Journeys

Activists Walk To Raise Attention To River Pollution........

Back on March 1, members of the Indigenous Peoples Task Force set off on a 1,200 mile walk along the Mississippi River, from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico to raise awareness about pollution in the Mississippi River. The water in Lake Itasca is blue, while it changes to brown as it flows downstream. The reason for the color change is a lack of oxygen. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added that over 6,600 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico is a dead zone due to low oxygen levels........

Midwest River Levels

     Rains Cause Rivers To Rise........

The rains that fell across the Midwest over the past weekend has area rivers rising, and causing flooding. This is a bit ironic, as drought conditions plagued river levels all winter. The National Weather Service has said that many rivers across the Midwest are at or nearing flood stage. This includes the Mississippi River between St, Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois. At this time, the city of Cairo does not need to be concerned with flooding........

Place to Start

Where do you start on a project this size ?

After several conversations with Suzanne we decided to prep the shop for cold weather first, that would include adding a couple of furnaces and much better lighting.
While completing the heat and light project in the warehouse I made a copy of the
"To Do List" and began to get bids on work I was going to sub out. Once I got all of my prices , I decided that doing the outside of the boat was a great place to start as the outside project includes some of my labor as well as work from subs.
Before I say anymore I want to make it clear that all the subs that I used had no idea that I was going to write this blog or that it would be linked to RiverBill's site. I want everyone to know exactly how I was treated and the quality of work I got. I hope that this information helps all of you when you need to hire subs for similar things on your boats.

I selected Lehman Conley from Fiberglass by Lehman to do all the gel coat work and remove all the oxidization from the exterior of the boat. In order to save some money I agreed to prep the boat by removing the stripes, hardware, snaps and covering the interior with plastic. I felt that buffing out all the stainless steel trim and rails now would be better than cleaning the buffing mess off the fresh gel coat.

I spent the next several days with an air eraser getting the stripes off, actually went through 6 eraser wheels to get the job done. I've owned the boat since 2004 and always thought that all the stripes were vinyl , 5 minutes with the air eraser would prove that assumption wrong. Seems the wide black stripe is painted on with a polyurethane of some kind. I was kind of looking forward to seeing the boat without the stripes so I could decide what was going back on if anything . Suzanne and I had spoke of possible color changes in the beginning but with the black stripe being permanent it looks like its back to the original style. This is no real crime because I liked the original stuff enough to buy the boat in the first place.

Drought Seems To Be Over.... For Now....

The drought conditions across the Midwest are easing, and the levels of the Mississippi River are looking good. Two months ago, Marty Hettel of AEP River Operations was concerned that the drought conditions would shut down commercial traffic along the Mississippi River. He added that AEP was having a difficult time, as they were operating at less than 50% of their capacity. Now Hettle is saying that river conditions are good at this time........

Kids can discover nature in wetlands at annual family fun day

St. Charles, Mo. — Special places that help clean water, reduce flooding, and provide home to fascinating plants and animals are worth celebrating. They can be a lot of fun too.

That’s the idea behind the annual Wetlands for Kids Day event. It’s happening this year on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles. Wetlands for Kids Day is hosted by MDC, Ducks Unlimited and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The event, supported by grants from the Enterprise Foundation and the Mississippi Valley Duck Hunters Association, is free for both kids and adults.

Wetlands for Kids Day helps families discover nature by learning more about and appreciating wetlands through enjoyable activities that relate fun with these vital habitats.

Activities include more than 20 stations where visitors can learn about wetland creatures first hand. There will be a chance to see real birds of prey, thanks to the World Bird Sanctuary. A live reptile and amphibian station will allow a close up look at these wetland inhabitants. Kids can explore the Duck Wing Maze while learning to identify ducks by wings and plumage along the way. They can also crawl through a simulated beaver den.

Retriever demonstrations are popular with visitors who enjoy watching the dogs perform on land and water. Other stations include free fish tasting, air rifle shooting, and a rod-and-reel casting.

Each child who attends gets a free subscription to MDC's Xplor nature magazine for kids. They will also receive a Ducks Unlimited Greenwing membership and a subscription to Puddler Magazine. All kids who come to the event will also receive a free tree seedling from MDC.

In keeping with its watery theme, Wetlands for Kids Day will go on rain or shine. In the event of wet weather, the event will be moved indoors. Food will also be available for purchase during the event.

To learn more about Wetlands for Kids Day, call 636-441-4554.

The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is located in St. Charles on Route D, about two miles west of Highway 94.

More Marathon News

You last heard news about our newly installed wind generator circuit board and there were some "minor details" that needed to be ironed out. Hardly. I ran a rudimentary test suggested to me by Chris from SALT, and was not able to come to any conclusion, so then I started looking into the paperwork that came with the new circuit board and I found that the wrong boards were sent from E Marine in Fort Lauderdale.
It appeared that SALT ordered the correct boards, the ones for our Air-X, but boards for the Air Breeze were sent. No one at SALT caught the error, and thus the wrong board was put in our unit. They look identical, and everything lines up, however, the LED is green on the Air Breeze generator, but red on the Air-X, and the circuitry is different. So what?
Well, according to Shawn, one of the owners at SALT, the blades for the Air-X perform differently than the blades on the Air Breeze, therefore the circuit boards work differently. Our unmatched setup would mean inefficient operation of our Air-X generator, and I'm not overwhelmed with their performance as it is.
I had wondered who would be the first to suggest that instead of changing out the boards, we could "upgrade" to the Air Breeze blades, making our generators quieter and increase their output. The very idea was suggested within minutes. I may have taken the bait, but we have our upcoming work at Marathon Boat Yard to consider, so I opted to stay on course and accomplish what we set out to do in the first place, and save upgrades for the future.
Shawn agreed, and had already ordered the right boards, and he promised to get the incorrectly installed board swapped out, and get the proper spare in our hands, ASAP. I have faith in human nature, but did possess some protection in the fact that VISA was used in all our transactions, plus I had plenty of email verification that all would be done to our satisfaction. I also know that you can't run a business for free, so I agreed to pay for all our labor thus far, after balking at the number of hours they intended to bill us, and settling for a lower figure. More about that later.

Final Thoughts

We're back in the U. S. of A!!
After a rolling, 10-hour crossing from Nassau to Great Harbor Cay in the Berry Islands, and then a smooth 25-hour crossing to the Florida coast, we're back in the States. Currently, we're in a marina in Stuart, Florida on the St. Lucie River, an inlet between the Atlantic and the Okechobee Waterway of central FL.

Today we plan to do LAUNDRY :) and decide if we want to rent a slip here for the next year. We've already met some friendly people at the marina's St. Pat's Day party and have checked out the pool and other facilities (lovely).

In the meantime, I want to share some random, final thoughts about our adventure in the Bahamas.
Did I mention that Barry had his evil spirits exorcised in Nassau? Really. A little, wrinkled old woman dressed in old clothes approached him in a marine hardware store and said "I'm hongry. I need $2.00 for a loaf of bread." Barry gave her the money, and then she said "Let me take away your bad spirits." She placed her hands on his back and his chest, closed her eyes as if in prayer, and mumbled some words. When she finished, she said "You be better now." Barry thanked her and went his merry way. Hmmmm....Bahamian panhandling? But since his head doesn't spin around 360 anymore, I guess it worked :)
Island time: This is an adjustment, even for retired people! We learned we could not be in a rush to get fuel pumped, to be served in a restaurant, or certainly to use the internet! A sign in a bar in Staniel Cay summed it up: "The internet may be slower than you are used to. Just relax and look at the beautiful water surrounding you. Eventually you will get a connection--in the meantime, enjoy the view."
Weather predictions aren't always correct--too bad you discover this when you're miles offshore in 6 foot waves.
People are amazing! The man who saved our dinghy; the guys who set an extra anchor on our sailboat as it was being dragged to the rocky shore; the couple who are traveling with their disabled son and showed us the true meaning of patience and love; the waitress in a local Nassau food 'shack' who remembered us and the food we had ordered several weeks previous; and adventurous people who just follow the wind!

Mississippi River Near Mississippi County, Missouri

River Levels Rising, As Are Concerns........

Residents of Mississippi County, Missouri are keeping tabs on the rising levels of the Mississippi River. Just two years ago, flooding devastated the region when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers blew the levee at Birds Point. Area residents are concerned about the new levees holding up if the river levels rise much more. Recently, the Corps sent out their annual reminder notice to residents advising that flooding is likely when the floodway is activated........

Fishy Tales From Sikeston, Missouri

Man Buys Yacht, Puts It In A Pond........

Recently, Sikeston, Missouri resident George Morris purchased a yacht, not with the intention of sailing the seven seas, but with the plans to keep it on a small pond on his property. Morris had seen the movie "Secondhand Lions", and set out to recreate a scene where a character floats a yacht in a pond. Morris had a bit of trouble getting the yacht home from Alabama, destroying four trailers in the process. He intends to rent the yacht out to honeymooners........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Politics Front And Center Of STL Riverfront Debate........

The St. Louis riverfront, and what to do with the land has been an issue for more than 200 years. The 80 acres that make up the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial has been heavily debated during this time. By the early 1940s, the land had been razed. However, World War II had put a stop to all efforts to construct a memorial to westward expansion. Many suggestions had been made as to what to do with the land, including the construction of a football stadium as well as building a Midwest version of Disneyland........

Confluence Trash Bash set for March 23

St. Louis, Mo. -- The Great Rivers Greenway District and Trailnet are inviting area residents to join them in their fight to clean up the rivers and creeks within the Confluence Greenway and the Missouri/Mississippi River watersheds. More 1,000 volunteers are expected. Past clean-ups have removed more than 20 tons of trash from area streams and rivers.

Individual volunteers, civic groups and youth organizations are encouraged to volunteer. No experience is necessary! Volunteers will be provided a free t-shirt, bags, and gloves.

One of the region’s largest river clean ups, the Confluence Trash Bash, will be held Saturday, March 23, starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers can choose from four starting locations:

  • OLD CHAIN OF ROCKS BIDGE at 10950 Riverview Drive in St. Louis

  • CREVE COEUR PARK at 2143 Creve Coeur Mill Road in St. Louis

  • ST. FERDINAND PARK at 1 St. Ferdinand Drive in Florissant

  • CHOUTEAU TOWNSHIP at 3244 West Chain of Rocks Road in Granite City, IL

Register at: stlmsd.com/educationoutreach/msdgreeninitiatives/streamcleanassistance

Clean-up sites will be chosen or assigned and are near the starting locations. At the end of the clean-up, participants will regroup at the sign-up locations for a celebration (BASH) and free lunch. During lunch, prizes will be awarded to volunteers for trash finds in three separate categories: Weirdest Trash, Largest Trash, and Most Expensive Trash. Happy hunting!

Volunteers should plan on working hard, having fun, getting wet and dirty, and leaving with the sense that they’ve contributed to the environment and to our local water quality in a very significant way,” said Dona Schuh-Anderson of Metropolitan Sewer District.

Municipalities in St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis are joining in the effort, which has removed 79 tons of trash and scrap, and 1,975 tires from our streams and neighborhoods in just four years.

This project would not be possible without the participation of our proud sponsors: Trailnet, Great Rivers Greenway, Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, Missouri American Water, St. Louis Audubon Society, St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic, Missouri Stream Teams, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri River Relief, Missouri & Piasa Palisades Group of Sierra Club, Operation Clean Stream, St. Louis City, St. Louis County; along with municipalities within the Missouri and Mississippi River Watersheds: Bellefontaine Neighbors, Bel-Ridge, Berkeley, Bridgeton, Calverton Park, Chesterfield, Cool Valley, Dellwood, Ferguson, Florissant, Jennings, Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, Moline Acres, Overland, St. Ann, Town and Country, and Woodson Terrace.

   Bill Brueggeman Passed Away

Sad News to Report:

Con Trios Yacht Club Emeritus Life Member Bill Brueggeman passed away Thursday, March 14th, 2013 at home after a long illness. Bill and his longtime companion Dianne Hedenkamp boated out of Duck Club Yacht Club. Bill has not only been a member of Con Trios for over 20 years but had served several years on the Board of Directors. An avid boater he was one of the original members of the Dardenne Slough River Association that put on the amateur boat races benefiting Make-A-Wish. We will all miss him on the river. Our prayers and condolences go out to Bill and Dianne's families at this time. Bill had arranged to donate his body for science. A memorial will be planned at a later date.
Many Thanks to Sonny Robbins for the information

Recently, a father and son fishing outing ended abruptly after they spotted a dead body floating in the Mississippi River. The pair drew closer to the body, and determined that it was indeed human. Randleas dialed 911, and responders turned out immediately........

News Release From BoatUS

Calling All Waterfront Communities: Do You Want Visiting Boaters to Stop and Spend Money?
Federal Boating Infrastructure Grant Program Pays for Transient Boater Facilities

$6 Million Surplus Available: Could Help Rebuilding Post-Sandy?
For Transient Slips, Moorings, Fuel Docks, Navigation Aids, Pump-Outs, Restrooms, Utilities and Breakwaters

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 15, 2013 – The Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) program, which funnels federal fuel taxes paid by recreational boaters back to the states to attract visiting boaters with amenities such as secure overnight dockage, has a $6 million dollar surplus this year. First championed through Congress by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) in 1998, the US Fish and Wildlife Service-managed program has dedicated over $170 million to date on the specific task of helping waterfront communities attract cruising boats. Now, with a significant surplus in the bank, the agency is issuing a second call for applications for fiscal year 2013, found at BoatUS.com/gov/BIG.asp.

“BoatUS initiated this program to benefit cruising boaters,” said BoatUS Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs Ryck Lydecker, who has been involved with and provided guidance to the program since its inception. “The BIG program can increase local economic development with boater spending in restaurants, shops, service industries and tourism-related businesses,” added Lydecker. “And it is often the seed money that jumpstarts larger projects that benefit local boaters as well.”

A competitive matching grant program, waterfront communities can use BIG funds to welcome passing boaters, for the day, a weekend or up to 10 days in port. The goal is to give cruising boaters convenient access to shore-side amenities via slips dedicated to transient boats as well as mooring fields and dinghy docks. Marinas can also install conveniences and services like restrooms, fuel docks, electricity, water and sewage utilities, as well as recycling and pump-out stations using BIG dollars.

“The program’s scope is national, but we are encouraging marinas and communities affected by Hurricane Sandy that lost valuable transient dockage or other infrastructure to apply,” added Lydecker.

Projects must be located on water bodies deep enough for boats 26-feet and over to navigate at a minimum depth of six feet. A project may include costs for one-time dredging to provide access between open water and the tie-up facility. Matching funds – a 25% minimum is required – may not come from other federal sources, but state, local and private funds can be used to match. Marinas operated as private businesses are eligible to apply. BoatU.S. advises that potential applicants should contact the agency in their state that administers BIG funds. A link to the directory is available at: BoatUS.com/gov/BIG.asp

Con Trios Sad news
