The Picture of the Day.... was sent to us by Capt'n mike Kolisch who hails out of Port Charles in the boat..... Cooler Breeze

Bill,

I was boarded the other day started playing with Google Earth on my ipad. Thought I would take a trip up the river on Google Earth a really cool app. like you are really there. When I got to my favorite Island Enterprise Island there is my boat the Cooler Breeze with my tube floating next to her. What a shock that was.

I am ready for a river trip for real soon.

Bill,

Here's a picture just taken in Pickensville, AL at "Pirate's Marina Cove" marina.
We're waiting for a south-bound tow to finish locking at the Tom Bevill lock.
We left out of Vonore, TN one week ago. I would have liked to get a picture with the Smoky Mountains.

The second picture was taken by long time friends Geneva & Pete Andrews "Woodja" from the HWY 60 bridge crossing the Tennessee River.

Third is a picture of the Delta Queen a few days ago tied up in down-town Chattanooga.

The "Indian Princess" is the same boat pictured in Woodland Marina's web-site and facebook page. (new owners, new name)
That picture was taken by Glenn about 5 years ago. I think it made Riverbill's pic of the day back then.

On our way to Ft Myers Beach, Florida,
We check out RiverBills.com everyday!

Zip Line Approved By County Council........

Tuesday, the St. Louis County Council approved the proposed tree top adventure course and zip line in Creve Coeur Park. However, naturalists opposed to the treetop adventure course believe that the attraction will jeopardize migratory bird habitats. Executive director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Audubon Society Mitch Leachman stated that he wanted to meet with park officials to minimize the impact on the bird habitats. Co-owner of Go Ape, Chris Swallow stated that they intended to develop the facility as soon as the County Council issues their approval........

Life On The Mississippi

     Retired Captain Recounts River Life........

Recently, thetelegraph.com caught up with retired towboat captain Walter Allen "Hoolie" Bowermaster, who recalled his life working on the river. Bowermaster grew up on the White River in Arkansas, his father was a commercial fisherman. The family lived on a houseboat, and did not own a car. The family had boats. Bowermaster held many jobs before starting his river carreer at Wood River's Economy Boat Store at Wood River Harbor........

Prophets Come In Many Forms

Remember that fella we met in Key West at the Conch Republic Bar? The one who started his conversation with me by saying that our wind generators were noisy and were going to break? Yes. Him.
It turns out I should probably go back and find him and anoint his holiness with adulation and praise, for he is apparently a prophet worthy of being the center of a new religion, because his prediction has come true. Our port side wind generator is broken.
The port side wind generator started "braking" for no apparent reason when we left Key West twelve days ago, but I suspected it was because our house bank of batteries was just fully charged and the generators don't supply a charge when the voltage is at an acceptable level. Then, over the weekend, when winds were blowing continually at 30 miles per hour, and the voltage had dropped on the house bank because we were running the water maker, the port side wind generator continued to "brake" unnecessarily and then ceased to run at all. Boo.
Southwest Windpower has just been bought by Primus Wind Energy. This took place in January. Our wind generators are under a three year warranty, but it will be interesting to see how this process will go. I called them yesterday, but realized that they were probably closed due to the holiday. (President's Day, in case you missed it.)
I did call Dave Ludwig from Bloch Marine back in St. Louis. Dave did the installation and I had a question regarding the method we used to plug in the generators to the 6 gauge wire that he ran to the control panel. The wind generators were installed in such a way that replacing them, or taking them down for service, would be an easy operation. What won't be easy is shipping them off to Colorado to have them "inspected" before the warranty is honored. I'll keep you posted as to how this transpires.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Class

Boater Education Saves Lives

Missouri’s Mandatory Boater Education Law requires that every Missouri resident born after January 1, 1984 who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes must carry a boating safety identification card issued by the State Water Patrol and a valid photo ID. This includes personal watercraft like Jet-Skis. The Boating Safety ID Card indicates successful completion of a boating safety education course. Illinois and many other states have similar requirements.

Flotilla 3-13 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering the “About Boating Safety” course at Grafton Harbor this winter and spring. The course runs on 2 consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM. The class schedule is as follows:

     Class 1: February 23 and March 2
     Class 2: April 6 and April 13
     Class 3: May 4 and May 11

Successful completion of this course will not only earn the Boating Safety ID Card, but will also give you invaluable information which will help you to remain safe on the water. Whether you are required by law to take the course or not, Boating Safety Education will help you be a better, safer boater. Insurers recognize this and most offer a discount on your insurance for completing the course.

Course Preregistration is necessary. Sign up or for more information by dropping by the harbor, or calling Jan at 618-786-7678 or by contacting Mark at msz@charter.net or cell phone number 314-803-7044.

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in classrooms and on the dock, performing safety patrols, vessel safety examinations and public education. The 31,000 members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.

John's Boat Harbor
Very busy day, friends from Florida dropped by to see us, then Barb & Ken came by. Also a lovely young lady applied for a job today, and we hired her. Mary's husband gets out of the hospital tomorrow, so he is going to keep her busy at home awhile. Then, the harbormaster & Ken went down river to check out a building, and locked his truck with the keys inside. So, me and Barb had to go to the rescue. Wonder what would of been said if I had of done something like that. HU???

From Wikipedia Encyclopedia

The Sangamon River is a principal tributary of the Illinois River, approximately 246 miles (396 km) long,[1] in central Illinois in the United States. It drains a mostly rural agricultural area between Peoria and Springfield. The river is associated with the early career of Abraham Lincoln and played an important role in the early white settlement of Illinois, when the area around was known as the "Sangamon River Country". The section of the Sangamon River that flows through Robert Allerton Park near Monticello was named a National Natural Landmark in 1971

Barge Collision Causes Oil Sheen In Mississippi River

Thursday evening, 2 barges collided on the Mississippi River at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, spilling less than 400 gallons of oil into the river. One of the barges was off-loading fuel at a transfer station, when it was struck by the other barge. There were no injuries reported, and the oil spilled was confined to the oil that was in the transfer hose. Traffic on the river was not shut down after the collision, however, vessels were advised to reduce speeds in the vicinity........

River History....

16 February 1854 in River History

Competition between the boat lines brought about the beginning of racing by the captains. The first boat to come into port was given first chance to unload and to be the first to get away to pick up freight at the next stop. This made it necessary to build faster boats.

Houses were built with lookouts on top making it possible for the people to watch the racing steamers coming into dock. The boats were loaded with freight and crowded with passengers who felt lucky to be aboard during the race.

The townspeople came to the riverfront and cheered as the speeding boats entered the Alton port. The prize was a set of gold covered antlers, which were placed in the pilot house until some other boat defeated the champion.

The boat racing continued until a tragic accident happened. On February 16, 1854, the steamer "Kate Kearney" blew up as she was pulling away from the crowded wharf at St . Louis. Fifty people were killed and twenty-five were badly injured. Some of the passengers and crew were blown into the river and lost. Newspaper criticism of the races and government action brought an end to the reckless races on the Mississippi.

Back In Newfound Harbor And Defying Logi

The islands north of U.S. 1 in the lower keys are abundant, but the routes through them are shallow and meandering, and there are plenty of good anchorages to protect boaters from wind that may arise from just about any direction.

We left Johnston Key after spending four nights there and moved just a few miles east to Tarpon Belly Key. The wind protection wasn't any better, but we wanted a change of scenery and we found it. Tarpon Belly Key used to be the site of a shrimp farming operation many years ago that didn't pan out. Since I'm not a historian, nor a travel guide, I'll dispense with the facts about it and suggest you peruse the Internet if you want to find out more about it. One thing remarkable is that due to its historical nature, the small island gets a few visitors, so we could watch the boaters and beach goers come and go from our anchorage a couple hundred feet off of land. I say, "beach" but use the term loosely, there seems to be no evidence of sand, but only large shells. Everyone wears shoes.
We waited until the tide was rising on Friday to start our cruise to Newfound Harbor, about eight miles away as the crow flies, but a crow needn't worry about running aground usually. The sky was overcast most of the way, not a good setting for reading the bottom, but our two chart plotters worked very well, plus I've learned that a line of crab pots isn't set out in water too shallow for a boat to retrieve them, so even though I curse the existence of crab pot markers most of the time, I've learned to use the placement of them to our advantage.
Our route took us in a zigzag manner through some very shallow water, some as low as four feet, and this was on a rising tide, over to the Niles Channel Bridge which is between Summerland Key and Ramrod Key, a total of 16 miles from our starting point at Tarpon Belly Key. With a 40 foot vertical clearance, one would think the channel under it would have a depth suitable for a vessel that needs that much clearance to pass, but we found the shallowest water just north of this bridge, so I made a note on our track for the day to only attempt the Niles Channel from Florida Bay to Newfound Harbor during high tide, or close to it. There are only so many bridges on U.S. 1 that allow a boat like ours to pass under, and this is one of them. Some are high enough, but the water is not navigable. Being able to get from north to south is important when avoiding hazardous weather and wind conditions.
We are on our 8th day on the hook since we left Key West and have been making water with the water maker, and are pretty happy with the results. Without too much use of the generator, I feel like we can exist on the hook for long periods of time before a trip to land is necessary. We'll probably need human interaction way before the food runs out. Limited phone conversations with friends and family have been sufficing for the time being.
With nearly a full tank of water, we're prepared to stay here in Newfound Harbor for a few days. Little Palm Island guards the southern entrance to Newfound Harbor and there is a ritzy resort and restaurant there. Passengers come from the "mainland" in vintage water taxis to visit the resort and eat at the restaurant where "gentlemen must wear long slacks and a collard shirt". A sport jacket is suggested. Guess where we won't be going to eat.
There are a few other watering and dining holes on nearby Little Torch Key and Big Pine Key. We want to check out Dolphin Marina too, long term dockage may be affordable there, but I have a suspicion that the person I had talked to on the phone a month or so ago was selling themselves cheap.
After getting set in a sand bottom, with room to swing in six feet of water, we nestled in the cockpit waiting for a sunset to appear that never did. The clouds rolled in and by the time we had finished our Valentine's Day dinner of grilled pork tenderloin, scalloped potatoes, and asparagus, we could feel the boat start to spin and rock.
I had checked the weather radar earlier and the wind coming from the south was going to push the harsh weather to our north away from us, or so I thought. The wind shift showed a big storm cell coming from our west and we were right in the path of it.
Our anchor alarm was set and I had confidence in our holding, as I had at least a hundred feet of rode set out. The cold front blew in and the boat tugged at her anchor, but we stayed put. The rains came, and we finally got to test the leak repair I had done back in Everglades City. The test failed.
Not only did water start dripping onto our settee in the salon, proving that my repair was to no avail, when I switched on the iPad again to check the radar, I got a message that said No SIM card. I can multitask. First, pull up the cushions on the settee, put towels down and a wastebasket to catch water. Then I started Googling to find out why we were getting the message about No SIM card when I know one is in there. I tried a few online remedies, but got nowhere.
I gathered my spirits and due to no T.V. reception, we played two game of dominoes as the wind and rain died down. It was 11 P.M. before we doused the lights and slept like babies. As is usually the case, I problem solve best first thing in the morning. Brain storms come in the A.M. for me.
The sun was barely up and I went to inspect the flybridge to search for something I may have missed during my previous water leak source searches. (That's a mouthful.) There is a small snap cover in the floor of the flybridge deck that hides a screw where the snap for the carpet used to be when we had carpet up on the flybridge. I had considered this screw as a source of the leak before, but discounted it because the screw now holds down a silicon washer which would keep water from entering the hole where the screw sits. Right?
Water leaks defy logic, so I removed the screw, squirted a liberal amount of silicon sealer into the hole and inserted the screw again. This screw is in the direct path of a small stream that appears as the rain water rolls off the inside of the isinglass onto the floor. This has to be the source of our leak, but we won't find out until it rains again, which should be this afternoon or tonight. If this solution doesn't work, we may have our upholstery covered in all vinyl and treat it like our seating in the cockpit outside and just let the rain pour in while we wear our raincoats at the dinette for dinner.
While we ate our breakfast, I contemplated the iPad issue, then I reset the iPad which always makes me nervous, but like a good doctor, "I did no harm", but I didn't solve the problem either. Even though I had removed the SIM card and re-installed it before turning in last night, I went through the process again even though logic says I was wasting my time. When turning on the iPad, I got a 5 bar 3G signal like we're supposed to. I am learning to ignore logic when it comes to rain water leaks and computers.
We have some exploring to do in this area which will most likely be done in the dinghy. Picnic Island is close by and is frequented by the locals. Maybe we'll find some friendlier people around here than at our last beach visit. As I had mentioned, there are some restaurants nearby too, and we'll try to visit one or two of them while we are here, but it all depends on the weather. We are expecting some nasty winds and rain this weekend, so we'll stay close to the boat unless conditions are otherwise. I really, REALLY, don't want to have any exciting stories to tell next time.

Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri

     Levee Opening Might Get Closed........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has wrapped up the seventh analysis of the St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project, and they are looking to take on the opponents to closing the quarter mile gap in the levee. The levee gap closure could benefit farmers in the New Madrid Flood Plain who lose crops every three to five years due to flooding. Opponents state that there would be a loss of up to 55,000 acres of wetlands habitat if the gap were sealed........

HMS Bounty Sinking

    Captain Had Asked What Happened........

When the HMS Bounty was taking on water, and the decision to abandon ship in the midst of of Hurricane Sandy was drawing near, Captain Walbridge gathered the crew for a brainstorming session. The central questions were basically what went wrong, and when did they lost control. The U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are holding several days of hearings to figure out the cause of the sinking, and make recommendations to prevent similar disasters in the future........

    Black River Produces Record Fish

POPLAR BLUFF – Brian Taylor, Poplar Bluff, took a 1-pound, 14-ounce gizzard shad from the Black River on Jan. 9 to set the first Missouri state fishing record of 2013.

Taylor gigged the 16-inch fish, earning a state record in the alternative-methods category. The previous record was a 1-pound, 8-ounce fish taken by Haden Crouch, Bradleyville, from Beaver Creek in 2011. The pole-and-line record belongs to Johnny Lee Ash, Windsor, for a 1-pound, 6-ounce gizzard shad he caught below Truman Dam in 2001.

More information about Missouri fishing records is available at mdc.mo.gov/node/2476.

Anglers who catch unusually large fish but fall short of records can get recognition through the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Master Angler Award program. To qualify, fish must meet minimum weight or length requirements. For example, a gizzard shad must measure at least 13 inches or weigh at least 1 pound to qualify for a Master Angler Award. For more information about the Master Angler program, visit mdc.mo.gov/node/6039.

Drinking Water Switch From River Causes Murky Conditions........

Typically, the City of Festus draws their drinking water from the Mississippi River. Low Mississippi River levels has caused the city of Festus to start drawing their drinking water from wells. As a result, brown water issues are cropping up in four or five areas of the city. Apparently, the switch has stirred up material in the pipes. The city has tried to flush the system, and is looking into additives to alleviate the problem........

I Fish.....

    From Captain Jim Marr

I fish....

After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eyebrow.

The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?"

"Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish."

Chad Pregracke, founder of Living Lands and Waters understands the need to keep the Mississippi River clean for future generations. Since LL&W was founded, over 60,000 volunteers cleaned up over 6 million pounds of trash, including 1,000 refrigerators, 4,000 55-gallon drums and 78,000 tires. Recently, yahoo.com spoke with Pregracke about LL&W's new Alternative Spring Break program........

Time For A Scenery Change

This is the fourth dawn breaking over Swing Set here in Jewfish Basin, and it looks like rain. We haven't had any significant rain since we were near Everglades City. When was that?

On Sunday afternoon we stayed on the boat. I had secured the dinghy and we deployed one of our auxiliary anchors for a Bahamian Moor. This view to the East shows the whitecaps here in the basin. Out in the Gulf, the waves were much bigger. We have a rule to not leave the boat when the wind picks up, in order to be on hand for evasive action, and we will adhere to this rule even if it means missing out on social activities.
We really dodged a bullet when our anchor dragged on Sunday morning. It was entirely my fault and could have been avoided had I put out enough scope, but I let out a short leash when we came in on Friday to prevent the anchor line from chaffing on the bottom and since it held so well for two days, I didn't adjust for the greater wind conditions that materialized.
I needn't have relied on a short rode though. I have been using a float at the point where the anchor chain meets the line and it keeps the splice off the bottom where rocks and coral can wear through the line and cast you off, adrift in the sea. There is no need to worry about rocks or coral here, the bottom is grey mud. It's looks like wet cement and is as dead as it can be. The mud means some low visibility, but outside of a few dolphin and flying fish, I haven't seen much below the surface to entice me to take a closer look beneath the waves with snorkel gear.
I have some loose ends to tell about. One thing we bought while in Key West was a small de-humidifier. It's very compact and is doing a great job, pulling about a cup of water from the air in our stateroom per day. The unit is about the size of an electric can opener, uses little power, and is very quiet. You must empty the water reservoir manually but it holds about two days worth of water and has an automatic shutoff in case you forget. We have it setting right next to the bed, so it's hard to miss. I'd say this purchase was a success.

Work on the New Hurricane Deck Bridge spanning the Lake of the Ozarks is moving right along. So far, approximately, a third of the structural steel has been installed on the new span. Once all of the structural steel has been installed, crews will be laying a steel deck onto the bridge, over which the concrete bridge surface will be poured. The new span is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, with the removal of the existing span to be wrapped up in 2014........

News Release From BoatUS

Learning from Sandy: Securing Boats to Protect Marinas, Clubs
Three Webinar Series March 5, 12, 26, Looks at Cause and Prevention of Hurricane Damage

WARREN, RI, February 12, 2013 – Hurricane Sandy was the single-largest recreational boating industry loss ever recorded, with over $650 million in damage to boats alone. Not included in that figure are the hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to marinas, boat yards and yacht clubs. Boats that didn’t stay put in Sandy’s exceptional storm surge caused damage to other boats, marina infrastructure, and private and public property. The Association of Marina Industries (AMI) and the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) are teaming up to offer a series of three online webinars on March 5, 12 and 26, 2013 at 2:00 EST for marine facility operators and others interested in learning about how to secure boats to avoid damage in future storms.

“When boats get loose in a storm like Sandy, it creates problems both within and beyond your marina’s property line,” said BoatUS Technical Services Director Beth Leonard. “It is a double whammy: your boating facility is devastated and the surrounding community’s recovery is impacted as well, so keeping boats in place is essential to limiting damage. Our goal is to give boating facility operators the information that can help them make informed decisions about planning for the next big storm, with an eye towards reducing damage to their own infrastructure, their neighborhood, and their customers’ boats.”

The first in the series, “Sandy Overview: What We’ve Learned,” (March 5), will look at what made Hurricane Sandy so destructive and the types of damage it caused to boats and to marinas, and share some survival stories. It will also try to answer the question: Was hauling boats, as BoatUS has long advocated, the right answer this time?

The March 12 webinar, “Securing Boats on Land,” will focus on the challenges of securing boats inside storage structures as well as outside on the hard, and discuss some potential solutions and best practices.

The March 26 webinar, “Securing Boats in the Water,” will look at the challenges presented by moorings and by various dock structures such as fixed or floating docks, and also look at solutions and best practices.

Much of the information included in the webinars comes from the industry-leading BoatUS Catastrophe (CAT) Team, which has over three decades of storm salvage and claims experience, and faced its biggest challenge ever with Hurricane Sandy. The team, which hit the ground running just one day after the storm made landfall, was the largest ever assembled in the Association’s history and worked in seven states recovering hundreds of boats.

The cost to attend is $10 per webinar for members of AMI or BoatUS, and, for non-members, $25 for one webinar, $40 for two and $60 for all three. NY and NJ facilities are invited to attend for free, compliments of AMI and BoatUS, but they must still register. Any proceeds after costs will be donated to the NJ Recovery and Relief Fund to aid recreational marine businesses damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

Online registration begins Monday, Feb. 18. Go to http://marinaassociation.org/training/online-webinars, or, for more information, call (866) 367-6622 or visit MarinaAssociation.org.

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa

Man's Body Pulled From The River........

At around 9 am Tuesday, Davenport authorities pulled the partially decomposed body of a man from the Mississippi River. Police are saying that the unidentified middle-aged man does not appear to have been the victim of foul play. A jogger noticed the man and alerted the authorities. Two boats were dispatched, one of which circled the victim, before bringing him ashore. The man was lodged about 50 feet from the shore, in about a foot and a half of water........

Senator Seeks Answer For Missouri River Release Snub........

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is calling for an explanation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as to why they refused to release Missouri River water to replenish the Mississippi River, only a day after approving water releases for use in oil drilling. On December 5, the Corps permitted a unit of Select Energy Services LLC to take water form Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. The next day, the Corps advised Harkin and Illinois Senator Dick Durbin that they were not permitted to use Missouri River water to aid navigation along the Mississippi River........

U.S. ARMY

District works through cold weather to complete Lock and Dam 6 dewatering project

For the fourth time since it was put into service in 1936, Lock and Dam 6, near Trempealeau, Wis., is being dewatered. The lock was closed Dec. 3, and the repairs are scheduled to be completed by March 11.

The 13 lock and dams within the district are dewatered for maintenance on a schedule of every 15 to 20 years. The work is scheduled around the navigation season, so maintenance takes place during some of the coldest weather of the year. At least 35 people make up the dewatering team; they are drawn from lock and dam personnel, maintenance and repair crews and personnel from the dredging team.

Traditionally, temperatures during the operation are seasonably cold with daily highs averaging around 30 degrees. This is mild compared to the cold temperatures endured during previous dewaterings. When the lock chamber was dewatered in 1994, workers faced temperatures from 25 to 35 degrees below zero. Comparatively, this year's dewatering took place during very good weather. "Before maintenance operations could even begin, the crew removed four barges of mussels, sand and other debris that had accumulated at the bottom of the lock," said Rojean LeSeure, Lock and Dam 6 lockmaster.

"Before dewatering begins, the cranes at either end set the bulkheads into slots in the concrete, they bulkhead the Tainter valves and check all the seals - then the lock can be pumped down. We sink an equipment barge with heavy machinery on it to allow access for the crew."

During this scheduled maintenance, work includes repairing concrete, sandblasting and painting the miter gates, and replacing most of the bubbler system. The bubbler system assists in dislodging debris that may disrupt the operation of the gates. Workers expect to replace 80 percent of this system with stainless steel tubes that have a longer service life.

Sandblasting of the miter gates takes place during the night and painting is done during daylight hours. "The sandblasters can see what they're doing better at night, in low light, and the painters work better during the sunlit hours" says Scott Uhl, operations.

Uhl said the team is also repairing concrete along the lock chamber walls. The Corps is using a wet-cut system that minimizes airborne dust and debris. This method is more difficult to use in near-freezing conditions but is more environmentally friendly, he said.

Gate repair also entails removing the diagonals that criss-cross the gates by heating them with a blow-torch. The larger diagonals weigh close to 1,000 pounds each, while the smaller ones weigh in at about 600 pounds each. The lower gates are 25 feet high and weigh 92 tons, while the upper gates are 23 feet high and weigh 85 tons each. Uhl said the team needed to put in a little extra work on one of the gates, because it had bent and deformed diagonals. The diagonals are tension bars that normally keep the gate plumb when stationary and prevent the gate from twisting while in motion.

Lock and Dam 6 is also the first site in St. Paul District to deploy a greaseless pintle ball. The pintle is the bottom hinge point for the gates. The greaseless ball will require much less resources and maintenance.
