     Drought Conditions Affect Electric Production........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is saying that lower runoff into the Missouri River Basin, caused by continued drought conditions, is affecting hydroelectric power production. During a typical January, the six mainstem power plants, including Gavins Point, produce 714 million kilowatt hours of electricity. This January, the power plants produced 634 million kWh. The Corps is working to make sure that the water intakes at the power plants have enough water for cooling.......

Mid-Day Delays Coming To Boone Bridge........

This month, construction work began on the new eastbound span of the Daniel Boone Bridge. On February 18, motorists will start to see daily closures of Interstate 64 near the eastbound lanes for rock blasting. Originally, the blasting operations were set to begin on February 11, but the recent wet weather delayed blasting preparations. The blasting is a necessary component in the construction of a shared use path connecting the Katy Trail to the new eastbound span........

The Missouri River remains low, as dry weather stays in the regions that feed the river. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, runoff into the river above Sioux City, Iowa will be about 80% of normal this year. Throughout February, the Corps will keep releases from the Gavins Point Dam around 14,000 cubic feet per second.     River Release Allowed, Snubbing Mississippi River Shippers........

Back in early December, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers allowed a company that provides water for hydraulic fracturing operations to draw water from Lake Sakakawea, while advising Illinois Senator Dick Durbin that releases from the Missouri River were off limits to help with navigation along the Mississippi River. The Pictures of the Day .. were taken by Kim Mueller...

Hi! My name is Kim Mueller

We are huge boaters and love being up in Grafton/Alton/St. Charles! Though the pictures may not be unusual, each picture does have a story...

Picture 1 - This is of our 97 Cobalt 293. This was taken last summer (2012) while I carefully floated on my raft in the water and juggling my camera by the River Road (cool rock formation in the background)!
Picture 2 - This was on my 34th Birthday after the Boat Parade on the 23rd of July - awesome!
Picture 3 - The picture of the Gypsy Rose was taken this past summer (2012) while we were enjoying the wine festival at the Loading Dock!
Picture 4 - Lastly, the final picture was taken up on the Mississippi this past December 2012, on one of the hose warm Sunday's we had! We are sitting in our 12foot Pickle Fork Boat!

BRP Crash Report Cites Operator At Fault........

Last June, two people were killed on Rend Lake during a BRP boat trial, when a criss-crossing maneuver led to a collision.  The final investigation into the incident was not able to fault equipment or machinery failure as the cause of the collision.  As was stated in the preliminary report released in July, operator inattention as well as careless and reckless operation have been cited as the main two reasons for the collision........

Back On The Hook

After being in Key West, and A & B Marina for one month, we left there this morning with mixed feelings. We really had a good time during our stay, met some nice people, and got familiar with the town. We do hope to get back to Key West later this year, but it all depends on if we'll be able to get a slip in Key West Bight during what will be the busiest time of the year. I had a nice conversation with the harbormaster before we left, and although he didn't guarantee the availability of a slip for us, come this fall, he did indicate that we will have an inside track if we call him this summer. But sitting at a dock every day gets old and we were anxious to get back on the anchor.
Yesterday was a busy day for us. We called a cab and rode to the airport for our interview with the Customs and Border Patrol in order to enroll in the Small Vessels Reporting System and the Local Boaters Option. Theoretically, this should allow us to call on the phone when we return to the U.S. if we go out of country, making it unnecessary to report in to a customs office in person. Our interview consisted of some amiable chatter with a half dozen customs officers and getting our fingerprints taken. Rosie hadn't been printed since her birth. I haven't faired as well over the years, but I feel like my run-ins with law enforcement have made me a well rounded person......

Mississippi River Politics

Congress Puts Together Second Mississippi River Caucus........

Last month's plummeting Mississippi River levels prompted the forming of a few new alliances in Congress which will focus on river issues and management.  The Mississippi River Caucus, headed up by Missouri Senator Roy Blunt and Iowa Senator Tom Hankin will concentrate on helping communities along the river, commerce and flood damage.  Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer and several other representatives are setting up the Mississippi River Valley and Tributaries Caucus.  This group will concern itself with more than 250 tributaries of the Mississippi River........

New Mississippi River Bridge

Contractor's Mulligan Means Concrete Removal For Do-Over........

Close to a quarter mile of freshly poured concrete on an East St. Louis approach to the New Mississippi River Bridge will have to be removed and replaced.  Apparently, the Illinois Department of Transportation found that a curving ramp was poured without the cross-slope called for in the contract.  Highway contractor Fred Weber Inc. has assumed liability for the mistake, and will make the necessary repairs at no cost to the project........

     Precipitation Lets Corps Quit Dredging........

On Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were wrapping up dredging operations, as recent precipitation has raised river levels to a point that the channel will remain open. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Mike Peterson stated that the dredges have been running for quite some time, and now it is time for maintenance on the dredges. In recent months, the dredges have moved some 8 million cubic yards of sediment........

Hi RiverBill

The photo I am sending you is from last years show and it has my Mom and Dad in it who are big time boaters. Seated on the couch is my mom, Lisa Koester, She is in the black shirt with the head scarf. The boat show was her first outting with a bald head as she was going through cancer treatments, Next her her is my dad Brian Koester. The good news is: She is cancer free and was finished with treatments in time for the 2012 boating season! We have been boating on the river my entire life and it is a big part of how we spend time as a family. We plan on attending the show again this year and I would love to be able to give them these tickets.

Thank you!

US Coast Guard news Release

Cleanup operations for oil spill on lower Mississippi River complete

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard completed cleanup operations of the oil spill near Vicksburg, Miss., Wednesday.

After extensive shoreline assessments and subsequent clean up actions the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Mississippi DEQ and the Coast Guard have deemed the cleanup complete. Agencies will continue to monitor for any environmental impacts from this spill.

During the course of the cleanup 5,300 feet of boom was deployed to contain the spill and 159 workers responded to the incident.

"Due to the quick response and cooperation of all the agencies involved, we were able to resolve the situation in a safe and timely manner," said Lt. Cmdr. Rebecca Walthour, the incident commander for the cleanup operations in Vicksburg.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received notification Jan. 27 at 1:30 a.m., reporting that two tank barges, towed by the tug Nature's Way Endeavor, allided with the Vicksburg Railroad river bridge. Both of the tank barges were loaded with crude oil; both of the barges were damaged, and one released oil into the lower Mississippi River.

There were no injuries or impacted wildlife reported.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident

The Pictures of the Day .....were sent to us by Capt'n Mark Newlin who hails out of Portage Des Sioux, Mo

Hey Bill,

I'm officially a "Riverrat"!

Moved into house on water in Portage, so you'll be seeing a lot more kayakers out there this summer.

You really find out who your friends are when it's time to move, especially when there's a hottub involved . Here's what we went through to get it up on the balcony.

Second pic is view from the tub.

See you in the water soon!

More Pictures of the Day .....were sent to us by Diane Bicknese of Little John's Motorsports Race Team

Hi Bill,

The Kwitchabitchin drag boat race team was in Evansville, Indiana for the Kentucky Drag Boat Association awards banquet this past weekend. Once again, driver Randy Bicknese was presented with the High Points Championship for the Top Eliminator 9-second class. The team received an impressive trophy, taller than Hayden, and stylish championship race jackets. This is a class organization with fantastic leadership and great members so it was a truly enjoyable trip and banquet. It takes a talented, dedicated team to be so consistently successful. The crew and our valuable friends continue to work hard and provide support to keep the team on top! In the photos are Little John, Randy, John Morris, Dutch Hauhe, Tim Tighe, and Hayden wearing their championship jackets, and a special hat for Hayden, in front of the trophy.

Great job guys!!

Diane

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

The More We Learn The Less We Know

This photo has nothing to do with the subject of this blog. It's just a picture of a beautiful Hinckley Yacht docked here at the A & B Marina in Key West. Some things are just what they are and have no other value and serve no purpose. One of those things are advice; that's why I seldom, or ever, give advice here on this forum. The blog is about our experiences. Others can draw from it what they will.
But people still give lots of advice. And on other matters, I do too, even though I know it is of no use. I like it when people relate a story about their experiences, but I don't appreciate it when I'm told what I should do by others. Especially if they don't know what they are talking about.
Take for instance, our intention of going to The Bahamas. Notice that I didn't say, "We are going to The Bahamas". We want to go. We intend to go. We are making plans to go. But are we going? That's like asking what's going to happen next week.
I've been poking around for information about traveling to The Bahamas in a boat for some time now and I'm nowhere near to being totally informed. I say, in a boat, because invariably when the subject comes up, someone will say, "Have you been to The Bahamas?" Yes. Several times. On our honeymoon to the West End, and more than once to New Providence and Nassau. So we know how things are there, or used to be, so many years ago.
We have been focused on getting Holly prepared for the trip and I've neglected the necessary preparations for getting us and Swing Set prepared. But I'm making up for lost ground.
As I've shared before, Holly can't go anywhere without her rabies vaccination, and she can't get that until after March 1st. Doctor's orders. We've applied to The Bahamas Department of Agriculture for her entry permit and we are still waiting for it, but we'll go with the application and receipt for payment in hand if we have to. We'll also need a medical certificate from the vet too. The Bahamas regulations state that the certificate can't be over 48 hours old. I feel like this stipulation will not only be flexible, but the date can be left blank and we can fill it in when we have to. I can make this happen. A scanner is a wonderful tool. Another logistical issue is that the rabies shot has to be given a month before you arrive in country. See how easy it all is?
As far as us...we purchased charts for The Bahamas when we were in Cape Coral last October. While here in Key West, we ordered from Amazon two guidebooks for the Abacos and The Bahamas. We ordered our identification decal from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Service. This decal is necessary for any vessel over 30 feet. The decal will be here before we leave Key West, or so I'm told.
We've been "networking" about the trip with others, trying to gather some personal experience, not to be confused with advice about what we should do, as I've said. Everyone has a different opinion about the easiest ports of entry, or the best cruising areas, or what equipment we need. If we tell people that we intend to anchor out, they never fail to list the best marinas to stay at. If we reveal what charts and books we have, we are invariably told that we "need" another book or chart. Folks never fail to enjoy spending other peoples money.
Yesterday a well meaning boater wanted me to come down and look at his chart plotter setup. I declined, telling him that it didn't matter what he had, we were going to use what we had, not having any desire to spend yet more money on this old tub. This was only after having listened to him list all the other stuff like his that we needed. Well, we have a water maker. He doesn't. So there.
I had learned of something called the "Local Boaters Option". It's part of the Small Vessels Reporting System. I learned of this from one of the guides that we purchased. It usually allows citizens returning from Canada and The Bahamas to re-enter the U.S. by simply making a phone call. For us it could mean not checking in at Miami or Key West when we return and waiting for an inspection. I made a few calls, found the cumbersome application online, filled it out, and was able to schedule a required "interview" by a Customs agent here in Key West. Our interview will be tomorrow morning. We have to take a taxi to the airport here in Key West for the interview, but we'll incorporate a trip to Winn-Dixie on the way back.
This trip to The Bahamas will be no different than the rest of our travels so far. We read lots of material concerning cruising the inland rivers and crossing the Gulf of Mexico before we started out last year. Some of the advice was legitimate, but some was unnecessary, and future travel will be the same. Troubles will come. We'll deal with them as we can as they come up; there is no way a person can plan for every occurrence.
Put this way; we don't go off unprepared. But some people over analyze and try to anticipate every negative aspect of a situation. That takes all the fun out of everything. We'll do reasonable diligence and leave the rest to good luck. It's as good a system as any.

A combination of groups are attempting to reform or repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard. The Renewable Fuel Standard requires the use of biofuels, such as ethanol. Missouri Department of Conservation

    Tracking River Smallmouth

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The smallmouth bass is one of Missouri’s most popular game fish, and biologists continue to learn more about the species to help manage its habitat and regulate harvest.

Biologists from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), National Park Service (NPS), University of Missouri (MU) and Missouri State University (MSU) are working together to gain information about smallmouth bass. These groups are conducting separate but complementary studies on the fish.

MDC surveyed anglers by mail and tagged smallmouth bass in several rivers to gather angler catch and harvest information as well as angler’s opinions. The groups used telemetry to monitor smallmouths’ habitat use, and MU is conducting telemetry studies to determine behaviors of the fish, such as what temperatures they prefer to live in. Although these studies are different, their combined results will give biologists a clearer picture of smallmouth habits and management needs..... Click here to continue reading on MDC website

Levee Repairs Delayed By State Permit Process........

Metro East officials must wait at least another week prior to finding out if the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will issue a permit for required repairs for 74 miles of flood protection levees in Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties. Originally, the public comment period was supposed to wrap up on Monday, however, the IEPA has extended it to February 11. Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri

Action Called For On Controversial Levee Plan........

For decades, federal agencies have debated the merits of sealing the final Missouri connection between the Mississippi River, and it's floodplain. The $160 million St. John's Bayou/New Madrid Floodway proposal was blocked in federal court, as it violated environmental guidelines. Now, Missouri's Senators are calling for the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to work out their differences in order to provide river communities and farms flood protection........

Missouri River At Booneville, Missouri

Booneville Envisions Bridge As Katy Trail Attraction........

Early next year, work will begin on the transformation of a historic railroad bridge into a highlight of the Katy Trail. The bridge spans the Missouri River at Booneville. It was completed in 1932, and was the longest lift span bridge in the U.S. at the time it was built. In 2004, Union Pacific was set to demolish the bridge, and in 2005, the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation listed the bridge as one of the Most Endangered Historic Places. Following a drawn out court fight, Union Pacific transferred ownership of the bridge to Booneville on January 7........

Corps Debris, Dive Teams Remove Sunken Ship, Keep Noyo Harbor Open

FORT BRAGG, Calif. -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scuba divers and debris deck hands from the San Francisco District worked in tandem Jan. 25 to remove a 50-foot, 15 ton sunken ship stranded across half of the Noyo River impeding travel in the federal channel for fishing vessels, recreational boaters and U.S. Coast Guard ships navigating into the harbor.

The MV John A. B. Dillard, Jr., and crew teamed with the district's divers to remove the vessel under the authority of 33 U.S. Code, Chapter 9, Subsection 409 (Obstruction of navigable waters by vessels; floating timbers; marking and removal of sunken vessels.)

The harbor entryway, located along the Northern California coast in Mendocino County, is the second narrowest along the West Coast, which meanders up river into the forested hills to a parade of restaurants, retail outlets, fishing canneries, docks and the U.S. Coast Guard Noyo River Station.

Options For Marina Are Being Assembled........

The depth of the water in the Hannibal Marina is so low, that during the recent Polar Plunge, spectators were allowed to watch from the docks, as the water was only a few inches deep. Sometime during the spring, dredging operations will commence at the Nipper Park Marina. After the dredging has been completed, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Hannibal's Parks Departments will be keeping an eye on the water depths in the marina in order to determine how quickly it silts in........

US Coast Guard

     News Release

Date: Feb. 02, 2013

Coast Guard reopens Mississippi River to towboat traffic

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Coast Guard has reopened the Mississippi River to north and southbound towboat traffic following the completion of oil removal operations, Saturday.

The Captain of the Port reduced the safety zone to one mile centered on either side of the two barges with no passing or overtaking within the zone.

“The Coast Guard is no longer actively managing the flow of towboat traffic and we are minimizing the safety zone to a one-mile distance to ensure the safety of response crews still working on the MOC-12 barge,” said Capt. William Drelling, Federal On Scene Commander for the Vicksburg oil spill.

The light crude oil product in the tank barges MOC-12 and MOC-15 was effectively removed to complete damage assessments and temporary repairs to prepare them for transit to a waiting marine facility. The barges will be moved following approval of a transit plan.

The unified command consists of representatives from the Coast Guard, state on-scene coordinators from Mississippi and Louisiana and the owner of the towing vessel, Nature's Way Marine LLC. Personnel from Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River, Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg and the Coast Guard’s National Strike Force are on scene as part of a unified command effort to oversee cleanup and salvage operations.

The Coast Guard investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Nautical Crimes

U.S. Sees Increase In Marine Robberies........

During January, the U.S. saw a wave of maritime robberies, where thieves stole boats, copper wiring, aluminum boat docks for scrap, and even yellow pine used for boat repair. The yellow pine was lifted from the Waterman's Museum in Yorktown, Virginia. Museum volunteer Harry Hart stated that the wood was good only for repairing boats. Five boats on trailers were stolen from a Virginia boat yard, after the thief shot a guard dog twice. The dog lived, and the boats were recovered, albeit missing a motor and other equipment........

Mississippi River Near Vicksburg, Mississippi

Why Is Mississippi River's Yazoo Turn Dangerous?

The recent collision of two tank barges with a railway bridge upriver from Vicksburg, Mississippi begs the question, what makes that portion of the Mississippi River so treacherous? The location of the collision is one of the two most difficult turns on the Mississippi River for tows to navigate. When traveling downstream, captains must make a hard right turn, exposing their vessels to currents from the Yazoo. Adding to the danger are pylons underwater, supporting two bridges, one for I-20 and another for rail traffic........
