Hi Bill,

Joe and I just returned from a dive trip to Bonaire, Dutch Antilles and we took riverills.com with us. We had an amazing time. Beautiful part of the world. The island is built on a reef so the diving is perfect. The next picture is of Joe diving. We also took a really neat picture of an eel and a cool Trumpet Fish hiding out. We wish that you all could have been with us!!

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

     Rain Helping River Levels........

The National Weather Service is saying that recent rains have given the Mississippi River a sizable boost. Over the weekend, the river was more than four feet below normal at St. Louis, but following the rains, it is 2.86 feet below normal. By the first of February, the river levels are predicted to rise to 1.4 feet below normal. Lt. Colin Fogarty of the U.S. Coast Guard stated that the increase in river levels is attributed to the increase in rain during January, as compared to rainfall totals from November and December........

U.S. Coast guard News Release

UPDATE: Coast Guard continues response to crude oil spill near Vicksburg

NEW ORLEANS — The unified command continues to respond to a crude oil spill in the lower Mississippi River near mile marker 436 in Vicksburg, Miss., Tuesday.

A lightering and salvage plan has been approved and multiple response crews have been dispatched to begin removing oil from the damaged barge.

Response crews have deployed 2,800-feet of boom to contain the source of the oil leak. Skimming vessels have recovered approximately 2,300 gallons of oil-water mixture since the incident occurred. The tank levels are being continually monitored. The leaking tank contained approximately 80,000 gallons of light crude oil. An estimated 7,000 gallons of oil is unaccounted for with an unknown quantity potentially contained in the void spaces of the damaged barge.

The Mississippi River remains closed to all traffic for a 16-mile distance between mile marker 425 and mile marker 441 near Vicksburg. Currently there are 21 northbound and 34 southbound vessels affected due to the river closure.

Mississippi River vessel traffic queue management is ongoing. Vessels will be allowed to transit the area as soon as it is environmentally and operationally safe to do so.

Personnel from Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River, Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg and the Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team from Mobile, Ala., are on scene as part of a unified command effort to oversee cleanup and salvage operations. The unified command consists of representatives from the Coast Guard, State on-scene coordinators from Mississippi and Louisiana and the owner of the towing vessel, Nature's Way Marine LLC.

The Coast Guard investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Missouri Department of Conservation

Runge Nature Center hosting Aquatic Relatives of the Dinosaurs

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Pallid sturgeon, part of a family of fish that originated during the Cretaceous period 70 million years ago, has remained essentially unchanged. However, the pallid sturgeon has been brought to the brink of extinction in the last century due to overharvest and loss of habitat. Discover nature and learn more about this fish at the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Runge Nature Center’s Aquatic Relatives of the Dinosaurs program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 7.

Pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) was listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in 1990. In 1992, Missouri’s Blind Pony Hatchery hatched the first ever hatchery reared pallid sturgeons. Since then, state and federal hatcheries have produced hatchery reared pallid sturgeon to stock rivers where pallid sturgeon once thrived. As a result, pallid sturgeon numbers are on the rise.

Like the American bald eagle, the pallid sturgeon is anticipated to be another species that will someday be removed from the endangered species list. Research and management continues to improve our understanding of this endangered fish.

Come hear about the pallid sturgeon and its incredible journey from a path of extinction to increasing abundance in Missouri's large rivers. The program is free and no registration is required.

Runge Nature Center is located on Hwy 179 in Jefferson City approximately .5 mile north of Hwy 50. Building hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The building is closed on Sunday and Monday. The outdoor trails are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

For more information on this or other programs, call 573-526-5544 or visit www.mdc.mo.gov and search “Runge.”

RiverBill,

I went down to Lake Center today and took some pictures of the ice. When you are standing at the bank, you can hear the moving ice sliding along the stationary ice that is attached to the shore. I am so glad we don’t live any farther north than we do. 95 degrees sounds pretty good right now.

Public Notices Open For Comment

Posted on the US Army Corps Of Engineers Website.....

  1. P-2840 : The applicant, City of St. Charles, Missouri, seeks authorization to conduct grading and filling operations within jurisdictional waters of the United States. The proposed project includes stabilizing of several sections of eroding stream banks along the mouth of an unnamed tributary and Cole Creek. The eroded banks are impacting private residential properties, contributes to public safety concerns and threatens to impact an existing sanitary sewer line. Cole Creek flows into Dardenne Creek, a primary tributary to the Mississippi River. The project includes the installation of rock toe protection, riffle pool complexes, low flow channels, and extensive native vegetation plantings. In addition, previously installed hard-armor stabilization structures are proposed to be removed and in order to restore conveyance through the reach, the channel will be widened by 10 feet and a bankfull shelf will be created or re-shaped depending on the amount and condition of existing materials. The project is located in Section 26, Township 47 North, Range 4 East, St. Charles County, Missouri. The public notice opens January 15, 2013 and closes February 5, 2013

U.S. Coast Guard News Release

UPDATE: Coast Guard responds to report of crude oil in Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS - The unified command continues to respond to a crude oil spill in the lower Mississippi River near mile marker 434 in Vicksburg, Miss., Monday.

Tank soundings indicated that the barge is still leaking product into the waterway. Containment boom has been deployed around the area at the leak and skimmers are being used to recover product.

Personnel from Sector Lower Mississippi River, Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg and the Coast Guard Gulf Strike Team from Mobile, Ala., are on scene and continue to assess the size of the spill and oversee cleanup operation. The tank levels are being constantly monitored for further leakage. The leaking tank contained approximately 80,000 gallons of light crude oil.

The responsible party is drafting a plan for lightering and salvage operations for Coast Guard review.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received notification Sunday at 1:30 a.m., reporting that two tank barges, towed by the tug Nature's Way Endeavor, allided with the Vicksburg Railroad river bridge. Both of the tank barges were loaded with crude oil; both of the barges were damaged, and one has released oil into lower Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River remains closed to all traffic from mile marker 425 to mile marker 441 near Vicksburg. The latest queue is 12 northbound and 19 southbound.

Mississippi River vessel traffic queue management is ongoing. Vessels will be allowed to transit the area as soon as it is environmentally and operationally safe to do so.

No injuries were reported in association with the incident. The Coast Guard investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The unified command consists of representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, local authorities and law enforcement and the owner of the towing vessel, Nature's Way Marine LLC.

Another Unexpected Visit

Posted Sun, Jan 27, 2013

One thing about being in such an attractive town is that people want to come visit, not only to see us, hopefully, but to have a mini-vacation. At times, a "vacation from a vacation".

Neal and Monica hail from our old home town and were visiting a friend in Cape Coral when they jumped on the Key West Express and endured the three plus hour boat ride to come and see us for a quick five hour visit. Their daughter was here over New Years and we didn't get to see her, but Andi and her boyfriend bought Neal and Monica their Express tickets at a discount, so they decided to make the trip.
The boat is huge. Equipped with four Detroit Diesels that propel it to 40 miles per hour from Ft. Meyers. Neal and Monica stepped aboard Swing Set shortly after docking here in Key West Bight. We popped some icy cold Bud Lights, caught up on some news from "home", and set out on our walking tour. Monica had a list of souvenirs that she had to get for friends back home, so we visited many of the places that we hadn't yet been to in Key West.
Five hours doesn't last long when you're having fun, and it was soon five o'clock and time for them to get boarded on the Express for their trip back to Cape Coral. We packed them a care package of some Bud Lights on ice in a plastic bag. Rosie couldn't bear the good-byes, I held up rather well, knowing that Neal and Monica are frequent travelers and that we'd see them again, much sooner than we may see other good friends. The beers were most likely gone before the boat cast off at 6 P.M.
After we left them for our walk back to A-B Marina we made a couple of stops. Our last stop was at the White Tarpon where we had a light dinner of shrimp and a shared Reuben sandwich. "We'll have fries with the sandwich", I told the bartender.
"Only comes with chips", was his reply. The shrimp were tasty, but the sandwich came and I thought we were being served toast, the thing was so thin. On the side was the smallest bag of potato chips that Lay's produces, I'm certain. The only upside was that the beers were $2.50, but we won't go back, and I suggest you don't either. I like this power of the pen.
We are loosely planning for our travels to the Bahamas. That means I've started discussing the trip with others here on the dock, and doing some networking on the America's Great Loopers Cruising Association discussion forum. We've applied for our Border and Customs decal to place on the boat for our entry back into the United States. Re-entering the U.S. after traveling abroad is the most important issue. More important than leaving in the first place, I think.

Hydrologist Questions Channel Work For Barge Traffic........

Recently, Robert W. Criss, PhD, a hydrogeologist at Washington University in St. Louis stated that the recent concerns over the depth of the Mississippi River was nothing more that a "trumped up crisis", hyped by the media. Criss pointed out that in this part of the world, during this time of year, rivers are normally low. Criss added that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' modifications to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers have transformed them into monotonous channels that are more likely to flood........

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day In 2008.....  were sent in by Jeff and Sherri Easley

Hi RiverBill,

I had to get my river fix today and took a trip to Hardin to have lunch at Mel's. Along with the wife and kids I took my faithful boating companion Emily. One picture was taken at Mel's, the other at Grafton. She's a 3 year old retriever/lab/chow mix, smartest dog I have ever had. I enclosed a couple of river pics of her. I'll spare you the Eagle pics I got today, although they were quite plentiful at Grafton today.

Have a great day!

Mississippi River Near Vicksburg, Mississippi

Barge Strikes Railway Bridge, Spills Oil........

Early Sunday morning, a barge carrying 80,000 gallons of light crude oil struck a railroad bridge near Vicksburg, Mississippi causing an oil spill. A second barge was damaged in the collision. The river was closed for eight miles in each direction, backing up at least five northbound tows and two southbound tows. As of Sunday evening, the first barge was still leaking. It is not certain how much oil had leaked out of the barge, but an oily sheen was visible three miles downstream........

  US Coast Guard

     News Release

Coast Guard responds to report of crude oil in Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS A unified command has been established in response to a report of crude oil in the lower Mississippi River near mile marker 434 in Vicksburg, Miss., Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received notification at 1:30 a.m., reporting that two tank barges, towed by the tug Nature's Way Endeavor, allided with the Vicksburg Railroad river bridge. Both of the tank barges were loaded with crude oil; both of the barges were damaged, and one has released oil into lower Mississippi River.

The actual amount of product released into the lower Mississippi River has not yet been determined.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Vicksburg has dispatched a pollution response team to assess the size of the spill and oversee cleanup operations. The source has been contained and tank levels are being monitored for further leakage. The actual amount of the spill has not yet been determined, but the leaking tank contained approximately 80,000 gallons of light crude oil.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Capt. William Drelling, commander of Sector Lower Mississippi River, has closed a section of the lower Mississippi River to all traffic from mile marker 425 to mile marker 441 near Vicksburg.

The Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund has been opened.

No injuries were reported.

The unified command consists of representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, local authorities and law enforcement and the owner of the towing vessel, Nature’s Way Marine LLC.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident

Waterfowl Used River Valley Over The Fall........

According to aerial survey figures, the use of the Illinois River Valley by ducks trended upwards over this past fall. By early December, some 600,000 ducks were counted in the Illinois River Valley, which is close to five times the average for the same time period. Heath Hagy, Illinois Natural History Survey's Forbes Biological Station director, stated that the duck numbers have increased over the past several years........

  US Coast Guard News Release

After fatal accident on Lake Superior, Coast Guard reminds outdoorsmen to always practice ice safety

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Coast Guard is reminding those who recreate on ice-covered waterways to take proper safety measures following the tragic death of a 34-year-old man who was riding a snowmobile and fell through the ice on Lake Superior Saturday afternoon.

A search-and-rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie received a report from Ashland Central Dispatch of a snowmobiler who fell through the ice near Madeline Island in Bayfield, Wis. The SAR coordinator directed the launch of a rescue airboat crew from Coast Guard Station Bayfield and a rescue aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Traverse City, Mich.

One witness of the accident attempted to rescue the subject but kept falling through the ice himself and was unable to successfully rescue the man.

An airboat crew from Madeline Island Fire Department arrived on scene and recovered the victim who was reportedly unresponsive after 45 minutes of being in the 33-degree Fahrenheit water.

Bayfield emergency medical services transported the man to Memorial Hospital in Ashland, Wis., where he was pronounced deceased. Next-of-kin notifications where conducted by La Pointe/Madeline Island Police Department. The Coast Guard will not be releasing the man's name.

For more information about dangerous ice conditions, click here.

The Coast Guard reminds those who choose to recreate on frozen waterways to never do so alone and always let someone onshore know where you are going and when you plan to return. Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature, and be mindful of the environment you are in.

When venturing out, a person should think I.C.E.

:

Intelligence - know the weather and ice conditions, know where you are going, and know how to call for help. Never go out alone.

Clothing - have the proper clothing to prevent hypothermia. Wear a waterproof exposure suit and a life preserver.

Equipment - have the proper equipment. Carry two ice picks or screwdrivers, in case you fall in. Use these items to dig into the ice and pull yourself out. They are more effective than bare hands! Carry a whistle or noise maker to alert people that you are in distress. Carry a cellular phone or marine band radio in a waterproof container so that you can call for help if you come across trouble.

For additional information, contact the Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie Command Center at 906-635-3233.

Hi Bill,

We took or grandson, Peyton, with us to the St. Louis Boat Show last year. He was constantly on the lookout for a pirate ship. We looked at a lot of cool boats: cruisers, runabouts, and sailboats. We sat in a few, visited with people, and even had a hot dog and soda. Well, as you can see, he found his pirate ship in Captain Tim's Gypsy Rose. We're looking forward to going again this year and maybe pick up a few trinkets for our boat.

Manhattan Ferry Collision Update

NTSB Reports No Time For Warnings........

On Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board has released the preliminary factual account of the collision of the high speed Seastreak Wall Street Ferry into a Manhattan pier. On the morning of January 9, the ferry departed Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey with 326 passengers aboard. The vessel's captain slowed the ferry from 30 knots to 12 knots, the speed at which it collided with the pier. The captain lost control of the vessel when shifting the helm controls to the starboard console. Those controls did not respond........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Class

Boater Education Saves Lives

Missouri’s Mandatory Boater Education Law requires that every Missouri resident born after January 1, 1984 who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes must carry a boating safety identification card issued by the State Water Patrol and a valid photo ID. This includes personal watercraft like Jet-Skis. The Boating Safety ID Card indicates successful completion of a boating safety education course. Illinois and many other states have similar requirements.

Flotilla 3-13 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering the “About Boating Safety” course at Grafton Harbor this winter and spring. The course runs on 2 consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM. The class schedule is as follows:

     Class 1: February 23 and March 2
     Class 2: April 6 and April 13
     Class 3: May 4 and May 11

Successful completion of this course will not only earn the Boating Safety ID Card, but will also give you invaluable information which will help you to remain safe on the water. Whether you are required by law to take the course or not, Boating Safety Education will help you be a better, safer boater. Insurers recognize this and most offer a discount on your insurance for completing the course.

Course Preregistration is necessary. Sign up or for more information by dropping by the harbor, or calling Jan at 618-786-7678 or by contacting Mark at msz@charter.net or cell phone number 314-803-7044.

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in classrooms and on the dock, performing safety patrols, vessel safety examinations and public education. The 31,000 members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.

  Mississippi River Navigation

Rainfall And Snow Melt Improves River Outlook........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently stated that persistent rains and snowmelt should guarantee continued navigation along the Mississippi River, at least through mid-February. In addition, the Corps wrapped up critical rock removal from the Mississippi River near Thebes, Illinois. Crews deepened the channel by two feet, in only three weeks time. Major General John Peabody, commander of the Mississippi Valley Division of the Corps said that these factors increase the likelihood that an adequate shipping channel can be maintained through the spring........

  US Coast Guard news Release

Coast Guard and U.S. Attorney's Office prosecute fake distress caller

BOSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Attorney Office announced jointly Thursday that Shane Coxon, 24, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington for knowingly making a false distress call to the Coast Guard in July 2010.

Coxon was sentenced to time-served of approximately three and a half months imprisonment to be followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay the U.S. Coast Guard more than $4,500 in restitution.

Prior to the incident, Coxon was a petty officer second class in the Coast Guard, stationed at Sector Northern New England. On July 18, 2010, Coxon called the Sector Northern New England Command Center, provided a false name and reported a flare sighting off the coast of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Flares are a universally recognized mariner distress signal. The report was a hoax.

The Coast Guard, unaware that the distress call was a hoax or that it had been reported by Coxon, issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched crews from South Portland, Maine. The search lasted nearly an hour and a half and cost the Coast Guard more than $4,500, while putting rescue crews at risk.

“In the Northeast alone, our crews respond to more than 2,500 search and rescue cases per year and save more than 350 lives,” said Lt. Joe Klinker, 1st Coast Guard District Public Affairs Officer. “We’ve been performing these missions for 200 years, our crews are constantly busy, and their mission is dangerous. That’s why we have the tools in place to prosecute hoax offenders.”

Coast Guard Investigative Services partners with the Department of Justice to aggressively prosecute persons initiating or contributing to false distress calls. Not only do these hoaxes unnecessarily put rescue crews at risk; they can detract from actual emergencies that may arise.

Hey Bill....

Last year a group of us river rats from Sioux Harbor went to the Miami Boat Show. We were looking around at the speed boats when we walked around the corner and there stood Kenny Chesney. I didn't even know he was interested in boating. My wife Jan ran right up and started talking to him. I immediately asked for a photo opportunity. He didn't say no so we snapped this picture. Mr. Chesney is a quiet man. He didn't say much. I even bought him a beer but I ended up drinking it. This is certainly an interesting boat show picture and I hope you pick us for a couple tickets to the St. Louis Boat Show which we enjoy too.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day In 2005.....  was of gulls flying around on the down-river side of Alton Dam. Must have been lot of food for them there. This picture does not really represent all of the birds that were in the area. It seemed like thousands and thousands of them flying around, all diving into the cold water for food. When one gull got something the rest chased him trying to get it away. Quite the site !

Holed Up In Key West

The end of last week was a whirlwind of activity. We spent Friday with Doug and Jeanne Harmon, first meeting early to go to El Siboney's Cuban Restaurant where we had one of the best meals here in Key West. Very reasonable prices and very good food. It's off the beaten path and worth the hunt to find it. Get the skirt steak.
On Saturday, Doug and Leslie Woods called. They were in town for a couple of days with friends Joe and Christy Grygiel, all of them from back in Missouri and members of the Duck Club Yacht Club on the Mississippi River where we used to be members. The four of them met at the boat and even though the sky was a little overcast, the wind was very light, so we offered to take them out for a cruise. They came prepared.

Bill:

Ran into these guys at The Boathouse in Destin Harbor. They are doing the "Great Loop" in a canoe and someone had just given them a small inflatable dinghy to put all their gear in so they could get the canoe a little more freeboard. They are Curtis "Glen" Lambert and Jake Tully from Fort Wayne Indiana. They put in on the Wabash River to the Ohio to the Mississippi and went all the way to New Orleans and are now crossing the panhandle of Florida.

Jake said he has a Facebook page and a blog but no computer so it only gets updated when they can get access to one at a library or such.

The Mobile Alabama TV Station recently did a story on them, here is a link to that - http://www.fox10tv.com/dpp/sports/pair-travels-great-loop-by-canoe

The public notice opens January 15, 2013 and closes February 5, 2013.

On Tuesday, Senators John Lamping, R, Ladue and Eric Schmitt, R-Glendale introduced bills proposing that the bridge be named for Stan the Man. Proposed names for the bridge would have to be approved not only by the Missouri Legislature, but the Illinois Legislature as well........
