Pictures of the Day ...were sent to us by Capt'n Mark Newlin

Hey Bill,

I came across these pics from a couple summers ago.

The pics are of a truck at George Winter park that was left running while owner got ready to unhook Seadoos.

First two are of it sinking and the last three are me pulling it out with my Big Bronco.

    River Levels Fall Despite Snowmelt........

A few days ago, meteorologists stated that melting snow runoff would give a slight increase to the level of the Mississippi River, but it would not arrive for several days.  On Sunday, the gauge at Thebes, Illinois was at 4.41 feet.  The water level had fallen about six inches over the previous 24 hours........

Carlyle Lake Water Released Into Mississippi........

According to a news report dated December 28, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released some of the water stored in Carlyle Lake into the Mississippi River.  The Corps first released lake water into the river on December 15.  By January 15, the Mississippi River at Thebes, Illinois is expected to reach two feet and falling (below 9 feet).  Rock pinnacle removal may have an effect on controlling river depths around January 20........

The Great Lakes

Chicago District "Weathers" Recent Storm Events........

Chicago District deputy commander speaks at Sen. Durbin extreme weather press conference in Chicago

Chicago District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Jim Schreiner speaks at Sen. Dick Durbin press event to address causes and effects of extreme weather, Chicago, Ill., Dec. 10, 2012. The Corps monitors lake levels closely. Low lake levels impact commercial and recreational navigation, water supply, hydropower, recreation and the environment. This is a complex system, and we will continue to look at all the factors to include potential climate change effects on this resource, said Schreiner. (U.S. Army Photo by Sarah Gross)

"As authorized by Congress, the Army Corps has been involved on the Great Lakes since the early 1800s with the development of harbors and channels for navigation; we also have been monitoring hydrological conditions and lake levels in detail since 1918," said Chicago District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Jim Schreiner.

The Chicago District maintains seven major harbors on the Illinois and Indiana shores of Lake Michigan, collects hydrographic survey data and performs maintenance of breakwaters, as part of its robust navigation mission.

Though the majority of the Chicagoland area saw negligible effects from Hurricane Sandy, Chicago District navigation infrastructure did receive significant impacts.

Bill - over Christmas we were going through old photo albums.

Here are pictures of Little John (winter 1983) trying to break ice so we
could go for a boat ride on the Free Spirit.

Didn't quite make it. But the effort showed valor and determination.

You just gotta love river rats.

Happy Holidays to you and all your readers

Pictures of the Day ...were taken on the St. Louis Riverfront on Christmas Day. it's a plastic barrel raft setting in front of the helicopter barge.  The raft is outfitted with a plastic captain's chair, oars and oar mounts.  It even has an extra set of oars and an extra plastic chair.

Eight plastic barrels, a sheet of plywood, a few of 2 x 4s.... and you have yourself a spiffy home made raft.  I imagine the tops of the barrels are cut away for ease of fastening the 2 x 4 cross members and for ease of bailing if the the barrels become filled with water......

Unmanned Model Boat Crossing The Atlantic........

About a month ago, Robin Lovelock launched a five foot long unmanned model boat, with the hope it will cross the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed that no unmanned vessel has ever crossed the Atlantic. The vessel, dubbed the Snoopy Sloop uses a Global Positioning System to pilot the model on it's 5,000 mile journey. The Snoopy Sloop will take about six months to complete the trip, travelling 3 mph........

Pictures of the Day ...were sent to us by Dr. Denny who hails out of My River Home Marina

RiverBill.

Had to tell you about this adventure Saturday. Wanted to have my hull and prop inspected for a survey and found one of the most enthusiastic scuba divers I have ever met, James Dean from Lake St. Louis. This young fellow was like a fish out of water and only so anxious to get into the 40 degree water!!

I highly recommend this young man if anyone needs a diver as he also does underwater hull cleaning, etc. AND!!! for the price of a few beers!! (plus a little stipend).

It was fun watching him work and we all chilled as he patiently worked under the cold Mississippi water at My River Home.

I Think Summers a Comin,

Dr. Denny

Mississippi River Outlook

     River Shipping Continues.... For Now....

So far, shipping is continuing along the Mississippi River. However, predictions are suggesting that the Mississippi River could be shut down to navigation in January, when the water levels reach 9 feet. During a typical December and January, around $7 billion worth of cargo traverses the Mississippi River. Shipping interests have requested that the federal government remove rock pinnacles in southern Illinois and release more water from reservoirs along the Upper Missouri River........

  Mississippi And Missouri Rivers

      Low Water Levels Revealing Artifacts........

The drought-ravaged rivers across the Midwest are revealing their secrets. The lack of rain has lowered the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers to levels not seen in decades, which is causing issues with commerce, recreation, power production as well as water supplies. The low levels have also uncovered the USS Inaugural along the St. Louis riverfront, an old steamboat on the Missouri River at St. Charles and an ancient stone map believed to be up to 1,200 years old........

Back in 1954, the Missouri River fell to 0.6 feet, but the lowest level was recorded was 0 feet in 1919. More Notes From Marathon

We are into our second week here in Boot Key Harbor, which is in Marathon, as most of you know. We have some relatively chilly weather occurring currently. The photo above was taken yesterday when the wind kicked up and our low was 66 degrees. This morning it was 55 degrees and the wind blew hard all night. We should get up to the mid seventies today and the wind should die down about mid day.
We were going to take the dinghy over to Dockside last night, a bar/restaurant here in the harbor, but it was too windy to suit us, so we stayed in and used up some data transfer space and watched a movie on our Roku player.
The harbor keeps filling up, mostly with sailboats. We have made some inquiries to two Key West marinas that manage dinghy docks and mooring fields. We are currently intending to go to the Garrison Bight Mooring Field. We would rather stay on anchor, but the anchorages around Key West are usually crowded, and as much as I have confidence in our anchoring abilities, other people may not be as responsible. The dinghy dock at Garrison Bight is close to shopping, a hardware store, and the main part of Key West, for our partying pleasures.
Some sailors we spoke to have complained about the long dinghy ride from the mooring field to the dinghy dock at Garrison Bight, especially in a north wind, but we don't see a need to venture out if conditions aren't acceptable to us. The Garrison Bight mooring field looks sheltered enough from winds from other directions, so we'll see how it is for a week or so and then decide whether to stay in there longer or not.
The game changer here in southern Florida, particularly the Keys, is that access to the shore via a dinghy, is somewhat restricted, so some type of arrangement usually needs to be made with a marina in the form of purchasing a pass for one's dinghy. The arrangement usually includes the permission to get free pump outs and water fill ups. The free lunches that we found up on the rivers are not found down here. We do have a friend with some condos in Key West, and we're going to see if we can get a hook up on a dock in Key West if we need it, and if it's reasonably priced. Docks in the Key West Bight go for $120 to $160 per night for a boat of our size, and about $2000 per month. These costs are not in our budget, but staying on the hook or a mooring ball is still affordable. Fuel is not astronomical either.
We'll be heading to Key West next weekend after Holly's veterinarian visit, if the weather permits.
Meanwhile, work on Swing Set continues. The other night I was putting the dinghy up on the davits when one of the hooks on our fourpoint attachment gave way: an aluminum ferrel clamping around a cable just split down one side, letting the cable give way. The dink didn't drop far, or hit anything, and I left the dinghy float that night, and then made a trip to Home Depot the next morning to get stainless cable clamps, the traditional type. I replaced the aluminum ferrel with a stainless steel one, and then combined a cable clamp on all six vital points on our harness system. We shouldn't have any more problems.
Non-boaters, or seldom boaters, may not realize how much attention is required to keep a boat working in order to live on it. Take just the water system, for instance: At home, you just turn the faucet and the water comes out, or at least it does if you pay your water bill. We don't have a water bill, but when we turn the faucet, lots of things start happening.
First of all, we have to have water in the tank for water to come out. This requires getting the 120 gallon tank filled up about once a week. To accomplish this, we either get water when we get fuel, or depend on the good will of others in order for them to allow us to full up our tank. We may even pay for water, like we do here at the Marathon City Marina. Even though we are paying for a mooring ball, water is still 5 cents a gallon. We have the option of making our own water with our water maker. We haven't started using it yet, but the 3 gallons per hour that we will get from it will require us to use some battery power, whether we are cruising, or we have to fire up the generator to make that happen.
So, let's say we have water in the tanks.... turn the faucet and a water pump comes on, you have to transfer the water from the tank to the faucet. In our case, two pumps come on. We have two pumps in order to keep water pressure up in the event someone is taking a shower and someone else wants to use another water faucet. (We have nine water sources on Swing Set.) Two pumps is good in case one quits, too. This has happened and it was nice to not be out of commission while shopping for another pump.
We get water and we use it, but then it goes down a drain. In our case, the sinks drain to a central sump in the bilge. This sump accumulates the "gray water" and once the level gets high enough, a switch activates and a pump comes on to pump out the gray water. The sump needs to be regularly cleaned out because the soap scum gums up the switch and the strainer to the pump. We have replaced both the pump and the switch since we have owned Swing Set. The sump gets cleaned out about every four months. We use a wet/dry vac; it's a smelly job but doesn't take too long, our sump is easily accessible.
In view of all of this, water conservation is always on the forefront. We don't waste it. Some things will always take place, no matter what. Rosie, keep shaving those legs...
All of these mechanisms just to get water to come forth from a water faucet is just part of the bigger mechanical picture of our little world here, and something new is learned all the time. Learning new things will help to keep our brains sharp, at least this is the hope.
Today we need to take the dinghy over to the marina office today to pick up a package from Amazon.com. We ordered dog food for Holly that was supposed to be delivered next week, but the six bags have already arrived. That's enough five pound bags to last a long time, maybe six to eight months.
This is another advantage to staying on a mooring ball; we can get packages delivered and have a place to pick them up. This makes shopping for needed items a lot easier. We can also get our mail sent here too. I have an important letter coming from my father that we need to have a hard copy of, so we're having it sent to the marina, due to arrive before we depart next week.
One thing we don't like about Marathon is how most of the restaurants and services are lined up along the busy Overseas Highway. There are sidewalks along most of it, but sitting outdoors at any of the eating establishments mean sharing your conversations with the exhaust of the passing trucks. We are looking forward to the more quiet settings of the Key West bars and restaurants. Quiet, unless folks visiting from up north are in attendance.
Doesn't sound too exciting around here does it? But the weather will change this afternoon, or tomorrow, so we can return to dinghy rides, swimming, or just enjoying the view when we're not addressing the many issues that Swing Set requires of us. Not complaining. If we wanted things easy we'd have sold the boat and sat in our condo for the rest of our lives and let our brains turn to mush. Oh, we intend to have our brains turn to mush anyway, but we'll be active until the end while it happens.
Enjoy your friends and family in the next few days; someone may be gone away on a boat somewhere by this time next year. It might even be you.

Mississippi River Relief

     Water Levels Increase After Storms........

Thanks to increased releases from the Missouri River reservoirs, as well as recent snow and rain storms, things are looking up for the Mississippi River. Since Monday, the level of the Mississippi River at St. Louis has risen about a foot and a half, to almost 12 feet. Forecasts predicted the Mississippi River would fall to around 9 feet by the end of December. New predictions are that the river won't drop until the middle of January........

Birds Point Levee Update

    Phase One Of Work Complete........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the first phase of work in the Birds Point Levee has been completed. The Corps added that phase two is continuing on the upper crevasse. Crews are installing a pipe system, access wells in addition to placing the levee embankment. Crews are still constructing a berm at the center crevasse, and they are working on the levee embankment at the lower crevasse........

River History

On May,5 2011 the Bird's Point Levee was breached by the US Army Corps of Engineers to save Cairo, Illinois from the rising waters during the 2011 floods.

Bird's Point Levee is a "setback levee." It was built during 1927 -31 away from the river between Bird's Point and New Madrid, Missouri. It was constructed with a low spot to a height that allowed water to spill over the top during a catastrophic flood, filling over 130,000 acres of land and saving Cairo, Illinois from flooding. The low spot was designed to fail during such a flood, but it held up, so the US Army Corps had to blow it up.

The plan has been on the books since 1928 and this was the second time in the levee's history that the levee has been opened up.

US Coast Guard

    News Release

FEATURE RELEASE: On the water and in distress? Use your VHF, not your cell. New technology, better range and reliability can mean the difference between life and death.

Greg Arlotta’s voice turned grim as the boat beneath him slipped below the 37-degree waters of the Delaware Bay in the early morning darkness of Dec. 23, 2010.

“When this [cell] phone gets wet, I’m dead,” Arlotta told a 911 operator in the Sussex County, Del., Emergency Operations Center.

Arlotta’s foreboding was prophetic. He drowned some time that morning before rescuers could reach him. Unfortunately, Coast Guard boats and helicopters were delayed precious minutes because Arlotta and the mate aboard the doomed Sea Wolf called the wrong people with the wrong technology. Instead of hailing the Coast Guard on a VHF-FM radio at the first sign of distress, they waited until that was no longer an option and dialed 911 on their cellular phones.

“911 operators do a great job, but they don’t always know the questions to ask” for a maritime search and rescue case, says Geoffrey Pagels, a Fifth Coast Guard District Search and Rescue Specialist based in Portsmouth, Va. “A Coast Guard watchstander can get the necessary information right away . . . and if he has the information in his hands immediately, there can be a helicopter spinning in 5 to 10 minutes.”

22 December 1944 in River History

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Pick-Sloan Flood Control Act into law on December 22, 1944. This allowed the construction of thousands of dams and levees all across the United States.  .  The Flood Control Act of 1944 served six purposes on the Missouri River.  Hydropower, water supply navigation, flood control, recreation, and fish and wildlife.............

22 December 2008 in River History

On December 22, 2008, a coal fly ash spill occurred when a retention pond wall collapsed at the Tennessee Valley Authority's Kingston Fossil Plant, dumping an estimated 5.4 million cubic yards of coal fly ash into the Emory River...............

Upper Missouri River

     Low Water Levels........

The drought has affected the Upper Missouri River Valley, leaving banks and upstream sandbars visible. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reduced winter releases from the Gavins Point Dam, to guarantee adequate water levels in the Missouri River reservoirs for next year. Releases had been cut to 14,000 cubic feet per second, but downstream municipalities' water intakes were threatened........

Lawmakers Look To End Beach Closures.........

Missouri Congressman-elect Rocky Miller recently introduced a a bill that would end Missouri's E. coli beach closures. Apparently, Missouri has the most strict beach closure laws in the country. House Bill 51 aims to change that by relaxing E.coli standards to a level like Illinois, Iowa and California. The current system uses a one-time standard, which is easy to exceed. The proposal would utilize an average E. coli measurement as the standard........
