Pictures of the Day .... was sent to us by Dr. Denny who flies a 1945 Piper J-3 Cub floatplane

Bill,

Went out Thanksgiving day and turkey sandwiches on a sandbar south of St. Louis in our 1945 Piper J-3 Cub floatplane. It's amazing how treacherous the water is down there even at low levels. Fast moving and a lot of eddy currents. Got a couple of pics of the new bridge.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2011 ----  was a Claudia Burris' Picture of the Day from 11-26-11 with a comment from Milt and Fran Ohlsen

Bill,

That red, white and blue vessel leaving Hoppies is a 36' Krogen Manatee, built around 1984-94 . Powered by no more than a 90 hp perkins, probably. Several have done the loop. Even before there was a "Loop". Very roomy. 3'2" draft. Seen all around the Loop and in the Bahanas and South. Heck of a boat!!!!!!

Milt and Fran Ohlsen
M/V 49' Krogen Express "Sea Fox"

PS.....Fran and Milt Ohlsen formerly hailed out of the Duck Club Yacht Club and are spending time in the Caribbean and other warm waters of the south in their cruiser.....Sea Fox.

Mississippi River Levels

Lawmakers, Corps Discuss Low River Levels........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advised federal lawmakers that the Corps' cannot legally reverse their decision to decrease the flow of the Missouri River into the low Mississippi River. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin stated that on Thursday, Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy told him as well as senators from Iowa and Minnesota that the Corps may tweak the Missouri River releases to keep the Mississippi River navigable to barge traffic........

Mississippi River At Dorena, Missouri

    Commercial Traffic Restricted On Ferry........

Low water levels along the Mississippi River at Dorena, Missouri has resulted in the placement of restrictions on commercial traffic aboard the Dorena-Hickman Ferry. At this time, commercial trucks are not allowed to use the ferry, as heavy trucks have a hard time moving on and off the ferry at the Missouri landing. Commercial trucks will now be facing detours of up to 80 miles, dependant upon the destination........

News Release From BoatUS

2013 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Presented by Cabela's Preview

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, November 29, 2012 – The 2013 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Cabela’s will be returning to Florence, Alabama, for the next five years and details for the 8th annual event are taking shape. Collegiate anglers from across the country should block off the entire week of May 20-24 off on their calendars for another record- setting event.

Online registration opens Friday, February 1, 2013 at 8:00AM and all university-recognized clubs are allowed to register up to three two-person teams for the 2013 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Cabela’s. Every club is guaranteed entry for one two-person team and no team will earn more than three total entries.

The following criteria will be used to determine which school clubs receive entry for two or three two-person teams: Past champions (2006 – 2012) earn one additional spot per Championship title. Teams also earn one additional spot in the Championship for participating in each of the following events: 2012 Collegiate Bass Fishing Open; 2013 Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash; or 2013 Collegiate Bass Fishing Open.

Participants can plan on the following schedule of events:
Monday, May 20, 2013: Official Practice begins
Tuesday, May 21, 2013: Official Practice until 2 pm, then Angler Appreciation Night
Wednesday, May 22, 2013: Official Practice until 2 pm, then Registration and Banquet
Thursday, May 23, 2013: Day 1 Competition
Friday, May 24, 2013: Day 2 Competition

According to Wade Middleton, Co-founder of the Association of Collegiate Anglers and President of CarecoTV, “Last year was a record-setting year in every way we could measure the event. We had more students catching more bass than ever before, and they were supported by more sponsors than we’ve ever had at the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. 2012 was certainly a banner year, but we’re already working to make sure 2013 continues our tradition of growth and event development.”

Chris Edmonston, President of the BoatUS Foundation, added, “Having been a partner in this event since the inception, we couldn’t be happier to see the continued growth and development of collegiate fishing. The BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship and collegiate bass fishing in general have been one of the most successful youth fishing initiatives in recent history and we’re honored to be a part of the progression.”

Complete official rules for the 2013 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, including these registration details, can found at www.CollegiateBassChampionship.com. A detailed Angler Packet will be released in the coming weeks. Collegiate anglers can ensure they receive information as it is released by joining the ACA Mailing List, which broadcasts all announcements via email.

Lake Of The Ozarks

Low Water Good For Rip-Rap Installation........

There is something good about the drought conditions across the Midwest, and the resulting low water levels at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is easier to install rip-rap along the shoreline. Rip-rap is a collection of large stones placed along the banks and footings of floodwalls in an effort to keep waves from eroding the banks and washing sediment into the lake. Rip-rap can be installed when the lake is at normal levels, but low water makes it easier........

" Saturday was a good day for sailing, with steady winds out of the East.   I sailed "Tapacolo"  from Portage Des Sioux to Alton and back.   By the time I got docked the sun was setting, and this is how it looked from the back porch of Palisades Yacht Club."

Mississippi River Levels

    Low Water Now Political Issue........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently reduced the flow of water from the Upper Missouri River reservoirs, possibly affecting barge traffic within the next month. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill is pushing Governor Jay Nixon to get an emergency declaration from President Barack Obama. The declaration would force the Corps to release enough water from the Missouri River reservoirs to keep barge traffic moving........

Nautical Knowledge

Why Are Boats Steered From The Right Side?

Ever wonder why the steering controls for boats are typically on the starboard (right) side of the boat? The bnd.com Answer Man got the scoop from boat manufacturers and The Straight Dope. Apparently, early powerboats used automobile engines that turned the prop in a clockwise direction as viewed from behind the boat. This causes the boat to constantly veer to the left. Placing the steering controls, and the pilot on the right side of the boat counteracts the phenomenon.........

Maritime Tragedies

Crab Pot Lines Cause Of Boat Sinking........

On March 10, a fishing vessel named the Lady Cecilia sank rapidly about twenty miles off of the coast of Washington, taking the lives of four people. The vessel sank before the people aboard could escape or even send a distress signal. An investigation of the wreck with a remote controlled submersible revealed that the 70 foot trawler may have gotten tangled up in some wayward crab pot lines, causing it to list to one side. It is thought the Lady Cecilia capsized the other way when a stabilizing device broke off........

Boat sales in the main powerboat segments increased by 22.1% to 3,490 as compared to October 2011. That month saw double digit decreases in boat sales. Discover nature with Eagle Days around the state
Big rivers, many lakes and wetlands make Missouri especially attractive to bald

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Because of its big rivers, many lakes and wetlands, Missouri is one of the leading lower 48 states for bald eagle viewing. Each fall, thousands of these great birds migrate south from their nesting range in Canada and the Great Lakes states to hunt in the Show-Me State. Eagles take up residence wherever they find open water and plentiful food. More than 2,000 bald eagles are typically reported in Missouri during winter.

From December through February, Missouri's winter eagle watching is spectacular. Discover nature with Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Eagle Days events around the state, or enjoy eagle-viewing on your own. Eagle Days events include live captive-eagle programs, exhibits, activities, videos and guides with spotting scopes. Be sure to dress for winter weather and don’t forget cameras and binoculars. Watch for eagles perched in large trees along the water’s edge. View them early in the morning to see eagles flying and fishing.

Eagle Days events:

News Release From BoatUS

Two Affordable Holiday Gifts for Boaters

ALEXANDRIA, Va., November 28, 2012 – While a prepaid gas card may be a great holiday gift for a boater in the family, it’s also pricey, won’t last long, and may not be very practical for every kind of boat owner. Here are a couple affordable gift-giving options from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS):

$24.00 BoatUS gift membership: BoatUS annual membership is just $24 and comes in two choices: BoatUS for boat owners of all types, and BoatUS Angler for those who use their boat mostly for fishing. Being a member of the nation’s largest boating group means having a better and safer boating experience. Included is an information-packed subscription to BoatUS Magazine or to BoatUS Angler Magazine (respectively) as well as 24/7 dispatch service for on-the-water breakdowns from the largest towing fleet in the country, $50 of on-the-water boat towing assistance and $50 of on-the-road assistance for a disabled boat trailer and tow vehicle for roadside breakdowns. Boaters will also like the marina fuel, transient slip and repair discounts, and savings on boating gear from West Marine. Go to www.BoatUS.com/gift to purchase.

The $12.99 stocking stuffer: Here’s a unique stocking stuffer with near universal appeal: customized floating keychains. Sold in pairs, the 4.25’ x 1.5” thick foam rubber keychain allows you to personalize the gift with your boat’s name on it and won’t let your keys sink – and makes them easier to be found. They are just $12.99 for two and can be purchased online at www.BoatUS.com/keychains.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2011 ....... were sent to us by Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat..... Whoz Yer Daddy.

Bill,

Thanks so much for putting the pics up from our trip to Mels! We truly enjoy our old boats and the fellowship we get from working on them together. We have a group of folks who get together every Tuesday evening to work on boats and enjoy telling stories of our various adventures over the years. Our group has been dubbed "ole boys" and it is open to anyone who belongs to our chapter. Last week we had a Thanksgiving dinner at ole boys with fried turkey and all the trimmings! Here are a few pics including some of our current projects.

Thanks again for the support you give us!

NOTICE TO NAVIGATION - RM 185.5 - L&D 27

All navigation interests are advised that removal of the LD 27 D/S protection cell has been postponed until after 10 Dec 2012. In order to protect the damaged cell from impact, the spud barge will remain until after 10 Dec 2012. Helper boat requirements and availability HAVE CHANGED - SEE NOTICE TO NAVIGATION PN 12-15.

All navigation interests are advised of an obstruction (embedded metal) at the Main Lock lower I-wall bulkhead slot, just below the I-wall miter gate. The embedded metal corner protection on the U/S side of the bulkhead slot protrudes into the lock chamber roughly 3" from the wall. It is considered a hazard to passing tows and all mariners are advised from now until further notice to favor the east wall so as not to rub in this area of the main lock. The district will advise when repairs are made.

The 1200' main lock will be closed for miter gate replacement and embedded metal repairs from 10 Dec 2012 til 1 March 2013. During this time the 600’ aux lock will be open and the Government will provide the services of a helper boat to pull cuts from the 600' chamber. The auxiliary lock will have short intermittent closures between 17 Dec 2012 and 31 Dec 2012 to facilitate removal of the damaged protection cell. Specific durations and details will be announced. All navigation interests should be alert for, and abide by, any special instructions that may be issued by the Lockmaster during these timeframes.

River Traffic Protection Sought From Obama........

According to a spokesman for Senator Claire McCaskill, a group of U.S. senators are asking President Obama to issue an emergency declaration that would keep barge traffic moving along the Mississippi River. The proposed emergency directive would require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to increase water releases from the Gavins Point Dam, and speed up the removal of rock formations in the Mississippi River that hinder barge traffic during times of low water........

Mississippi River Between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois

The Mississippi River May Be Impassible Within Two Weeks........

Within the next two weeks, the Mississippi River could be impassable for barge traffic between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois on account of decreasing water levels. The American Waterways Operators and Waterways Council has stated that the river is already too low for barges carrying coal, steel and other commodities. Over the coming weeks, the water levels are expected to fall even further........

Mississippi River Levels

River Levels Forecast To Hit Historic Lows........

As of Tuesday, the level of the Mississippi River at St. Louis was at minus 1 feet, and is expected to fall as low as minus 5 feet within the next couple of weeks. The "minus" gauge reading refers to how far the river levels are below average. The zero indicator for St. Louis was determined in the 1860s as the lowest that the river had fallen at the time. Barge operators are lightening their loads, and reducing the number of barges in a tow in order to deal with low river levels........

Boat Sales

    Survey Says.... More Pontoons Sold....

A recent study conducted by Info-Link Technologies indicated that affordability, aging baby boomers and fewer entry-level boaters are behind the shift from runabouts and cruisers to pontoon boats. Jack Ellis, Info-Link Technologies managing director stated that over the past 15 years, the average boat owner is about eight years older than in the past, and some 70% of first time buyers sell their boat, and do not purchase another........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Keewadin and Little Marco Islands

We've found a good spot here just inside the Little Marco Pass, between Keewadin and Little Marco Island. The beach on the southern end of Keewadin Island has a lot of beach goers, even on a Monday when we thought it would be deserted around here.
But on Sunday afternoon there were plenty of boaters around. We took a walk along the crowded beach with Holly and she learned to jump over the anchor lines as we walked along the water's edge. A familiar looking boat caught my eye; it was a 1997 Formula 330SS with the same color scheme that our 280SS had. Upon closer inspection, the boat wasn't in very good condition, unlike our old boat, that a friend wound up buying eventually, keeping it in pristine condition.
When we got back to Swing Set, a boater came by and hailed us saying, "Hey Swing Set, my buddy follows your blog everyday! He's from St. Louis and knows someone that used to work at the brewery with you." I told him to bring his friend back on Monday and we'll have a beer.
At night we can hear the waves from the Gulf hitting the shoreline just outside the pass, but inside where we are anchored, it is very quiet and the water is smooth as glass. The boat trades ends with the tidal current twice a day, but we are anchored out far enough to avoid grounding when this occurs. We were all alone in here on Sunday night, just us and the fishes that come up to the swim platform when we turn on the spoiler lights.
We were waiting for the morning chill to burn off on Monday morning, and watching boats file in for a day of beach activity, when the fella that hailed us on the previous day came by, and he had Mark Wood with him, the guy from St. Louis. Fritz and Mark introduced themselves after tying up. I didn't recognize the name of the friend of Mark's that was retired from the brewery, but it's a big place. We talked for quite a while and we were able to learn a few valuable things about the area. Local knowledge is always better from residents as opposed to a book or guide.
Mark's wife, Terry, was concerned about Holly and he wanted to know if we needed the name of a vet, given our experience at the last veterinarian visit in Cape Coral. We told him to assure his wife that Holly was doing fine. We were additionally surprised when Mark brought out some "presents" for us and Holly. He passed over two six packs of Bud Light Platinum, a bag of pretzel sticks, a Christmas tree ornament, and some treats for Holly! We could stand some more loyal blog readers like this.......  go to    http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/  to continue reading

Missouri Department of Conservation

Mississippi River featured in Cape G. Nature Center programs, exhibits

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – New exhibits and programs at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center focus on the Mississippi River and its inhabitants. “Aquatic Relatives of the Dinosaur” is scheduled for Dec. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. and “Rediscover the Mighty Mississippi” will follow immediately after from 1 to 3 p.m.

“Aquatic Relatives of the Dinosaur” is a program focused on the pallid sturgeon, or Scaphirhynchus albus, led by MDC Resource Science Field Station Supervisor Dave Herzog. The pallid sturgeon was listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in 1990. In 1992, Missouri’s Blind Pony Hatchery hatched the first ever hatchery reared pallid sturgeons. Since then, state and federal hatcheries have produced hatchery reared pallid sturgeon to stock rivers where pallid sturgeon once thrived. As a result, pallid sturgeon numbers are on the rise.

“Research and management continues to improve our understanding of the endangered pallid sturgeon,” said Herzog. “Like the American bald eagle, we hope the pallid sturgeon will someday be removed from the endangered species list.”

Herzog said the pallid sturgeon program will detail its incredible journey from a trajectory of extinction to increasing abundance in Missouri’s Large Rivers.

“Rediscover the Mighty Mississippi” is a program immediately following that will showcase the majestic Mississippi River through maps and letters that chronicle its history, origin and connection to the people of Southeast Missouri.

“We hope folks will walk away with an appreciation of this local gem as they’re reminded of what a treasure we have in the Mississippi,” said Nature Center Manager Sara Turner.

Both programs will take place in the main auditorium at the Nature Center. They are open to all ages with no registration required. New exhibits compliment these programs in the exhibit area, featuring live pallid sturgeon in the aquarium and a new watershed exhibit to explore.

The Nature Center is located on the north side of Cape County Park. For more information on these and other programs at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, go online to www.MissouriConservation.org.

The storm damaged some 65,000 pleasure boats, totaling $650 million. This figure surpasses the prior record of $500 million set in 2011 by Hurricane Irene. Damages to marinas have yet to be tallied. Scott Croft of BoatU.S. stated that New York saw $324 million in boat losses, New Jersey had $242 million and Connecticut saw $23 million. Damages incurred in other states were $60 million........

Army Corps employs barges to move storm-damage debris out of NYC

PORT OF COEYMANS, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2012) -- A wave of long-haul trucks lined up at the loading area at the Port of Coeymans, N.Y., a day after Thanksgiving.

Docked were four barges that had traveled by tugboat up the Hudson River from Staten Island loaded high with hundreds of tons of debris, the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"It was load and go, load and go," said James Lindley, a quality assurance specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York Recovery Field Office, helping to oversee safety at the port. "We had 166 trucks run through the port that day."

Since its barging operations began Nov. 10, the Army Corps has moved an estimated 26,000 tons of debris out of New York City coastal neighborhoods and up the Hudson River.

The Army Corps has contracted three tugs and 19 barges, including one seminal barge capable of carrying 2,200-ton loads, to speed the transport of debris to permanent landfills upstate. NYC Department of Sanitation officials have assisted the debris removal operations by providing 18 barges for use.

From Fresh Kills Park -- a former disposal site on Staten Island for debris following the Sept. 11 tragedy -- the Army Corps has made 37 successful barge trips to date. Round-trip travel runs just over 300 miles.

On Nov. 23, at the Port of Coeymans, after the final fleet of long-haul trucks was loaded at dusk, the total amount of material hauled out that day stood at 1,419 tons. Back on the highway, truckers were either headed to Seneca Meadows Landfill in Waterloo, N.Y., or nearby Colonie Landfill, a half-hour drive from the port. Residing at both landfills are Army Corps QA specialists monitoring the flow of operations.

At 400 acres, Seneca is the largest landfill in New York and will be the final resting place for most storm-damage debris. It can accept upwards of 6,000 tons a day. Colonie, on the other hand, is capped at half that figure.

Dan Potter, a trucker from Liverpool, N.Y., has made two runs every day since the Army Corps set up its barging operations at Coeymans. With a full load and a three-hour drive ahead of him to Seneca, Potter didn't have a lot of time to chat.

"Yeah, I should get going," he said.

As with most truck drivers on the clock, speed is of the essence. For the Army Corps, the same can certainly be said of its current debris mission in NYC.

We Leave Naples In Our Wake

We had a quiet Thanksgiving Day. I called my dad and Rosie talked to members of her family. We didn't venture from the boat, doing some reading and enjoying some late afternoon sun in the cockpit.

Most beings save their Thanksgiving nap until after they have dinner, but Holly doesn't know anything about all that and she naps when she wants. Here she is partaking in just that thing while Rosie has the turkey breast roasting in our convection/micro-wave oven. Even though our original microwave worked just fine, trading it for the convection model was one of the best things we did in preparing for our life aboard the boat.
We ran the generator while cooking the turkey, but still it only took about one and a half hours to roast, turning out with a crispy skin and moist inside, just the way it should be. We rounded out the meal simply with instant mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus, and the traditional cranberry sauce. No buns or stuffing, and no pie, but we were so stuffed from the rest of the food, a few cookies later on sufficed for dessert. One of the best Thanksgiving meals we've had. Pizza on the bed of a Motel 6 in Texas while on a motorcycle trip being one of the worst.

Sunset in Crayton Cove in Naples on Thanksgiving was peaceful. We could see the various gatherings going on in the homes that line the cove and we both couldn't resist just a little remorse at the memory of holidays gone by, but we'll get over it.

US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard participates in Wisconsin holiday festivities

TWO RIVERS, Wis. – The crew at Coast Guard Station/Aids-to-Navigation Team Two Rivers offloaded Christmas trees at the Roger’s Street Fishing Village and participated in the city’s annual Holiday Parade Saturday.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Christmas Ship, the schooner Rouse Simmons, a crew from STANT Two Rivers brought 15 evergreen trees on one of the unit's 26-foot Trailerable-Aids-to-Navigation-Boats as part of a re-enactment.

The schooner Rouse Simmons carried Christmas trees and wreaths from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Chicago for more than 30 years until Nov. 23, 1912, when it sank off the coast of Wisconsin between Kewaunee and Two Rivers.

For two days, the citizens of Two Rivers paid tribute to the sinking of the Christmas Ship. The community presented a musical, re-enacted the transiting of the Rouse Simmons, and honored George Sogge, captain of the Two Rivers Life-Saving Station.

“It was a great experience being a part of the local history and traditions that make the city of Two Rivers what it is today,” said Petty Officer 1st Class William Blair, executive petty officer of STANT Two Rivers.

Continuing with tradition, crewmembers from STANT Two Rivers also participated in the annual Holiday Parade through downtown Two Rivers.

Each year, the city of Two Rivers encourages organizations to build floats and asks children to bring letters written to Santa Claus for a holiday celebration that runs through the city's downtown.

This year, the crew from STANT Two Rivers trailered a 25-foot Response Boat-Small decorated with lights and carrying Santa Claus.

Hi, Bill,

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

Here are a few pics from our last couple of river excursions. Mary, Katy and I had a great meal at the Boathouse the day I took the picture of you and Rich Luttrell and your gang at North Shore. It looks like you were having a good time.

The other two shots are of a boat we saw going downriver (heading for warmer waters?) near Grafton on Oct 28. It's the Lady Chateau of Stillwater Mn. According to http://www.boatinfoworld.com/ it's a 1975 72 foot aluminum hull Breaux's Bay Craft. We don't see too many pleasure craft of that size in the Alton pool. Here's the Breaux Craft site if anyones interested: http://breauxboats.net/index.html

Nation's Economy Could Be Damaged By Low River Levels........

Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began to slow the releases from an upper Missouri River reservoir, and within a few weeks, all barge traffic near St. Louis could be shut down. This could halt commerce in the middle of the nation, and produce what officials refer to as an economic crisis. Barges move twenty percent of the country's coal as well as sixty percent of all grain exports........

Back on November 28, 1967, a former teacher named Robert E. O'Brien applied for a mooring permit at the St. Louis with the promise his new riverfront attraction would be "a real slick thing". O'Brien purchased the USS Inaugural from a Texas Navy yard, and in June of 1968, she joined the Goldenrod Showboat and the SS Admiral along the St. Louis riverfront. On August 1, 1993, the Inaugural and a floating Burger King broke loose from their moorings, striking the Poplar Street Bridge. The Inaugural was saved and lashed to a barge downstream from the MacArthur Bridge. A few months later, she rolled to port and sank........

Bighead Carp Caught In Lake Pepin........

Last week, commercial fisherman caught a 47 pound bighead carp in Lake Pepin. This is evidence that the Asian carp are heading up the Mississippi River. Over the past 15 years, carp have turned up along the St. Croix and the Upper Mississippi River, but this is the largest bighead carp reeled in at Lake Pepin. Tim Schlagenhaft, who studies the Asian carp for the Minnesota DNR stated that it does not appear that the carp are reproducing in Minnesota waters yet........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Happy Thanksgiving

Before I get started on the subject of today's holiday, let me recap the week.
Last Sunday Gary and Judy came with us on Swing Set to look for our anchor one last time. The tide was at its lowest point when we attached our grappling hook to the stern of Swing Set and began dragging it behind. My plan was to make ever widening concentric circles around the perceived spot where I thought the anchor might be. I immediately was confronted with a problem that put an end to our search. The depth had a high degree of variability and I was churning up sea bottom in some areas as shallow as three and a half feet. The anchor was not worth us running aground and I didn't feel like lowering the dinghy to search with it. Instead, we fired up the grill and made lunch.
We stayed until nearly sunset and then dropped Gary and Judy off back at their condo for one last good bye until we see them again, no doubt before they head back north next spring. We had business to attend to on Monday morning and Gary offered to take us by car, but it was time to get back into our "car less" mode.
On Monday morning we took Holly to the vet for her follow up visit after taking anti-biotics for two weeks for her supposed bladder infection. We were supposed to have a urine sample ready for the clinic to examine, but Holly did not co-operate. Rosie had carried her the whole way to the veterinary clinic so she would have some pee to produce, but the vet said that Holly "had nothing in her bladder", so she couldn't examine a specimen to check for the existence of an infection. On our last visit, the vet reported Holly's weight at 6.25 pounds, so when she weighed Holly in at 5.95 pounds and then remarked how she is doing better by virtue of some weight gain, I smelled bullshit.
Rosie was unfazed at the gaff, but I said, "Wait a minute, let's back up."
"Holly has actually lost more than a quarter of a pound, how can you say she has had a weight gain?" The vet ignored my comment and proceeded to commence with a professional appearing examination, ending it with a suggestion that we come back in the next day and see if we didn't need an x-ray to check for "urine crystals".
"We won't be coming back tomorrow", I said. "We'll keep an eye on her and take her to another vet in another town if she exhibits any more symptoms of infection. It's times like these when you realize a veterinarian you can trust is more important that your own doctor. Tara and Lorraine can't be nearby constantly. My doubts about this vet were confirmed when shortly after we left the vet, Holly produced a big pee spot on the sidewalk. "Nothing in her bladder", my butt.
We headed back to the dinghy, first stopping by the plumbing supply where we dropped off our small propane tank to be filled. We then dropped into the Cuban grocery to stock up on fresh meat. I also wanted to stock up on a good supply of "chicarones", or fried pork rinds. They usually have them at the meat counter, but they were out. The only ones better are the ones my dad makes at home in the oven. There are no dogs running free in my dad's neighborhood.
