Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in  2011......  were sent to us by Capt'n Gary Lucy, river artist extraordinaire, who hails out of My River Home in the houseboat....... The River Rover

Bill,

I am sending a few photos taken on the river Sunday. Sunday was a gray and wet day. However, Every day is a beautiful day on the river.

The eagle photo is not best. However, I had rough water and bad light. The big guy looks a little the worst for ware.

Also, a few photos of the Spirit of Peoria at Grafton. She is still propelled by her stern-wheel.....one of the last. She has great lines and is a floating history lesson depicting the image of the historic Mississippi River.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Barges Still Stacked Along Chain Of Rocks Canal........

On Wednesday, crews were working to make repairs close to the busiest lock on the Mississippi River, Lock and Dam No. 27 near Granite City, Illinois.

The lock was closed last Saturday, after it was discovered that a rock filled steel cylinder called a protection cell had ruptured, allowing enough rock to spill into the channel, affecting navigation. Barges use the protection cells as bumpers to help them align for entry into the lock.

The area of the cell that was damaged was unarmored, as it is normally 15 - 20 feet below the water level. The Coast Guard stated that close to 5 dozen tows with over 400 barges were awaiting transit through the lock........

The Great Lakes

Low Water Levels Affecting Lakes Too........

Low water levels are not only affecting navigation along the Mississippi River, but in the Great Lakes as well. The most shallow of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is low enough that boaters are hitting rocks a mile off shore. Environment Canada has stated that Lake Eric is 22 centimeters below the 100 year average, and 34 centimeters lower than last year at this time. Shippers are having to lighten the loads aboard their vessels. For each 2.5 centimeters (about an inch) of draft lost, cargo must be reduced by between 50 and 270 tons........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Incommunicado Near Apalachicola

I was finishing up my last blog entry while we were still at the home of AGLCA harbor hosts, Carl and Greg Vernon. Greg had been paying attention to my blog posts and knew how much I like fried chicken, so Rosie went up to the house before me and learned that Carl was out getting some take out chicken from Popeye's for us to have that night, and they wouldn't take any payment, no way, no how.
Before Carl had left to get the chicken, Greg had asked Rosie if she had gotten any rest, and Rosie said that she didn't, but played with Holly instead. When Rosie had said that, they both looked at her kinda strange, and Greg said, "How do you play with Holly?"
Now, I don't want this to sound unkind, because I don't mean to be, but some people are dog people and some are not. In fact, the only dog I really like is Holly, and Bonnie (Madge's dog), but some people are cat people and others are just people people. Carl and Greg fall into the latter category. Sure, they offered to have us bring Holly into the yard to do her business, and that was generous enough, but I could tell that they weren't pet people.
Why I'm saying this is so that anyone who has a giant Great Dane, or other large dog that they travel with, doesn't make the mistake of thinking Carl and Greg are gonna get all mushy over their pet.
When Rosie told me about it later, I thought it was funny. I could imagine Rosie going through the litany of how indeed she does play with Holly, when I would have just said, "How can you not play with Holly?" I'm still chuckling about it.
After dinner we sat on their deck and Carl told some boating stories. After being reassured all day that with proper planning and forecast checking, our crossing at this time of year should prove to be non-eventful, but each story Carl told was filled with one calamity after another and it became a bit unnerving for me. Telling horror stories about crossing the Gulf to people about to make the jump is like telling boogeyman and axe murderer stories to a child that is about to spend the night in a strange house. I wondered aloud as to why anyone would go through all the trouble of checking weather forecasts if it apparently didn't make a stick of difference in the end? Carl checked himself, and again, reassured us saying that the tales he was telling took place during crossings later in the season when circumstances were different. Later on I realized that there isn't much entertainment value in telling vanilla tales; all the good stories are about mayhem and things gone wrong, but at this point in time, Rosie and I would rather not hear the horror stories.

Plattin Creek Near Festus, Missouri

    Jefferson County Levee Sliding Away........

Portions of the Festus/Crystal City levee are sliding away. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers states that material used to construct the levee was not good enough, however, the Corps green-lit the use of the material when the levee was built in 2005. Last year, about a third of the levee began to slide, and it expected to cost nearly $1.5 million to repair. Festus and Crystal City paid 25% of the construction costs, and will not be responsible for 25% of the repair costs........

SPECIAL NOTICE TO NAVIGATION INTERESTS

Locks 27, Upper Mississippi River Mile 185.5 1. All navigation interests are advised that both the Main and Auxiliary Lock Chambers at Locks 27 in Granite City, IL will be closed until further notice effective at 1600 today. Last night the downstream protection cell developed a breech in the interlocking sheet piles and began to spill the rock fill into the approach area of the 1200-foot main lock. While the spilled rock remains an obstruction to the approach to the main lock, our engineers have determined that the cell is not stable enough for tows to touch or even for wave action caused by any water craft. Crews are in the process now of removing the remaining rock from the cell. We hope to have a better estimate of closure duration by morning.

2. All navigation interests should be alert for, and abide by, any special instructions that may be issued by the Lockmaster during this closure.

Locks 27 at Chain of Rocks Canal closed for emergency repairs

ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed Locks 27 at Chain of Rocks Canal, to commercial and recreational traffic for emergency repairs.

The lock, near Granite City, Ill., was closed Saturday at 10:54 a.m. when Corps of Engineers lock crews discovered damage to one of the lock’s protection cells. Although the lock structure is not at risk, the damage has obstructed safe passage through the main and auxiliary chambers. The timeline for reopening the lock chambers is unknown at this time as the repair process continues.

Damage to the protection cells stemmed from additional wear on a non-armored section of the lock’s protection cell that is typically under 15- to 20-feet of water.

“Repair crews are on site working to clear the channel and ensure tows can move safely through the locks,” Andy Schimpf, St. Louis District Navigation manager said. “We are in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard and the river industries.”

The Mississippi River watershed basin is the largest navigable inland waterway system in the world, providing the U.S. enormous economic advantages. Lock 27 receives the most commercial navigation traffic on the Upper Mississippi River corridor.

The Corps facilitates commercial navigation by providing safe, reliable, highly cost-effective, and sustainable waterborne transportation systems.

Damaged Lock Holding Up Barge Traffic........

Emergency repairs to replace a damaged protection cell adjacent to the entrance to Lock and Dam No.27 has left barge traffic setting idle along the banks of the Mississippi River.

A protection cell is a sheet pile filled with rock. Apparently, the cell came apart, and allowed a considerable amount of rock to spill into the channel. The damaged cell was discovered Saturday.

The work will involve the removal of the remaining rock from the cell, the repair of the cell and then the removal of the spilled rock, which is blocking the entrance to the lock........

MDC To Hold Open Houses On Paddlefish Regulations........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is considering the requirement of annual low cost paddlefish permits for sport snaggers, as well as the implementation of a Telecheck reporting system for harvested paddlefish.

The MDC believes that the changes will provide increased and improved information that will allow the agency to better manage paddlefish populations. At this time, paddlefish snaggers are only required to have a general fishing permit.

There are many meetings scheduled during October. A St. Louis area meeting is slated for October 30 at the MDC St. Louis Regional Office in St. Charles........

Lucas Oil Division 3

National Championship!

Click pic to enlarge

The Kwitchabitchin team got the job done in New Athens this past weekend! Randy Bicknese clinched his first National Championship in the Top Eliminator class for division 3 of the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series. Randy also clinched the High Points Championship for both the Kentucky Drag Boat Association and the St. Louis Drag Boat Association, backing up his 2011 titles. The boat was dialed-in all weekend and ran the four best times of the Top Eliminator class qualifying rounds on Saturday. For one of those passes, the Kwitchabitchin boat was driven by crew member and backup driver John Morris. On just his 2nd turn in the seat this season, John kept the domination going with a great 9.035 pass.

During the first round of bracket elimination races on Sunday, Randy beat the #10 qualifying boat and the title was clinched as the only boat that could catch him for the championship lost in that first round. Randy went two more rounds and finished the race in 3rd place.

What a great end to a season that started with a blown engine and a hole in the hull that required a major fiberglass repair. Thank you again to JD and the Port Charles crew for the awesome bottom repair. The boat ran true all season. Thank you to Todd's Machine for the quick engine turn around after the first race, it was strong all season, and thank you to Riverbills.com for the support and coverage! Way to turn things around team and congratulations on the championships!

 Boating Legislation

    Senator Seeking Capacity Limit Legislation........

Recently, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer introduced legislation requiring that capacity limits be posted on vessels over 20 feet in length. The proposed legislation stems from a boating tragedy that occurred on Independence Day on Long Island Sound. There were 27 passengers aboard a 34 foot Silverton, when it capsized. Three children died as a result. Although officials are investigating the cause of the capsizing, questions have popped up about the overall capacity of these vessels........

12th Annual Kaskaskia Watershed Association Showcase

CARLYLE LAKE - The Kaskaskia Watershed Association, Inc. will hold its 12th Annual Showcase on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Carlyle Sailing Association located in Eldon Hazlet State Park. The event is open to the public and hosted by the Carlyle Lake Association, Kaskaskia Watershed Association and HeartLands Conservancy. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. on September 21, 2012. A $10.00 registration fee covers the cost of lunch. Immediately following lunch, a boat tour on Carlyle Lake will be offered depending on weather conditions.

This years, theme “Water – Our Valuable Resource” Sustainability in Kaskaskia Watershed, will enlighten everyone on the importance of water today and what the future usages will be in the Kaskaskia River Basin. In January 2006 the Governor of Illinois signed Executive Order 2006-01 requiring the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to lead state and regional water supply planning activities in the state. In February 2010 Southwestern IL Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) now HeartLands Conservancy, Inc. was selected to coordinate IDNR’s regional water supply demands for the Kaskaskia Watershed through 2050 with Illinois State Water Survey and Southern IL University. This year the focus will be on the results on the Kaskaskia Basin Water Supply Plan, a product of hard work, time and commitment of 30 stakeholders throughout the watershed and local and state agencies. The planning process began in November 2010 and the Water Study Plan should be final by end of this year with projections of water usage to 2050.

Speakers include: Allie McCreary, Environmental Programs Technician, HeartLands Conservancy: “Kaskaskia Basin Water Supply Plan”; Bill Teichmiller, EJ Water Cooperative, Holland Regional Water System: “Regional Potable Water Usage in the Future”; and Vern Knapp Technical Advisor, Illinois State Water Survey, Prairie Research Institute University of Illinois: “Water Availability During Extreme Droughts like the 1950’s.” COL Christopher Hall, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District is scheduled to speak.

The purpose of the showcase is to encourage people throughout the watershed, which extends from the headwaters of the Kaskaskia River north of Champaign, IL to the confluence of the Mississippi River, to work together to continue to find common solutions to enhance and improve the watershed. The Kaskaskia Watershed covers all or parts of 22 counties in central and southwest Illinois. 10.8% of Illinois is in the Kaskaskia Watershed.

Register by Wednesday, September 19, 2012 to HeartLands Conservancy by calling 618-566-4451 ext 28 or by e-mailing dave.eustis@heartlandsconservancy.org. The $10.00 registration fee to cover the cost of the meal can be paid at the door. Checks should be made payable to HeartLands Conservancy.,

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Tom And Becky Visit New Riverboat........

On Friday morning, Becky (Morgan Bross) and Tom (Adam Ledbetter) were on the Mississippi riverfront at Hannibal, Missouri to greet passengers aboard the new riverboat, the Queen of the Mississippi.

The Queen's captain invited Tom and Becky aboard the vessel to greet passengers as they ate breakfast. Typically, Tom and Becky were not allowed to board visiting riverboats due to post 9/11 regulations.

Some of the passengers knew who the children were. A few passengers even left their breakfast to retrieve camera from their staterooms........

Illinois Waterways

Lake Survey Will Determine Fish Kill Extent........

The drought of 2012 lowered water levels in Illinois waterways, causing lower oxygen levels in the water, and resulting in fish kills. The damage may take years to recover from. The upcoming fall lake surveys will allow fisheries biologists to see what populations are left, and from there, they will be able to figure out how to restore fish populations, as well as species balance........

  Asian Carp Update

Study Reveals No Risky Great Lakes Path........

A study of 18 waterways linking the Mississippi River watershed to the Great Lakes has revealed no likely paths for Asian carp to reach the Great Lakes.

The Asian carp have infested the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and are moving up the Chicago River toward Lake Michigan.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been studying the waterways as part of a wider study to prevent the migration of invasive species between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Basin.

Boat Manufacturer

     BRP To Quit Making Sportboats........

Recently, Bombardier Recreational Products announced that they would stop manufacturing sportboats in the upcoming months. BRP is citing a continued decline in sales worldwide in the marine industry, especially in the sportboat market. This comes as a bit of a surprise, as BRP's sales are expected to be up about 10% this year over 2011. The company intends to focus their resources on parts of the business that show better growth potential........

Willpower / Audy B II Update  ..... was sent to us by Lou Lenkman of the cruiser..... Willpower

Bill,

Once upon a time there were lots of beautiful boats going to hog back for a wonderful BBQ dinner from our most gracious hosts from the Quincy Boat Club ....then disaster happened willpower hit something hard aground underwater that took out all steering (rudders) and the port prop.... Then the fun begins. With the help of all and the Audy B II we will be limping back to St. Louis on the power of one engine and the help and cooperation of the rivers gods!

Hopefully we arrive Monday afternoon still under our own power.

Best regards
Lou Lenkman

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

    River Clean-Up Was Held Saturday........

Saturday, around 250 volunteers spent about three hours cleaning up the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area. Last year, volunteers removed close to 10 tons of garbage and debris from the river. The volunteers seem to be making a difference, as they had to move up and down river from the Gateway Arch to find trash this year. 75 of this year's volunteers are Anheuser-Busch employees. A-B is a major sponsor of the Living Lands and Waters project........

St. Charles County and the Great Rivers Habitat Alliance are petitioning the Missouri Supreme Court over an appeals court ruling that upheld the controversial Premier 370 project in the St. Peters floodplain. Last month, the Missouri Court of Appeals Western District upheld St. Peters' use of a tax increment financing subsidy for the Premier 370 project. TIFs use a portion of the taxes generated by the property to pay for some of the related costs........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Destin To Panama City

Thursday morning in Destin Harbor the sky was threatening rain but we had things to do and we secretly wouldn't have minded any rain as we figured it would help wash the salt off the boat from our trip from Orange Beach.
The first order of business was to get our new air filters installed, but like everything else, nothing is simple or straightforward and usually includes a detour or two. Preying on my mind was an issue of the Walker Airseps installed on the Caterpillars were done in such a fashion that the air filters were rubbing against engine components and holes had been trying to wear through the filter elements.
I had initially intended to pop rivet some guards on the Airsep housings that would protect the elements from damage when I installed the new ones but once I took the old air filters off I could see an easier, and better, solution. It was a simple matter of pulling each Airsep housing up with some heavy duty cable ties, up and away from the engines. When I then installed the new filters, they didn't come in contact with the engines anywhere.
Once that chore was done I called around for diesel fuel prices and found the best price at the place I wanted to go to anyway and it was the Fisherman's Co-op where I wanted to pick up two fuel filters, the secondaries that mount right on the engines. We went over and topped off our fuel tanks and our water tanks and headed out for a test drive.
Prior to the new air filters, I couldn't get Swing Set to run over 12 miles per hour, and both Cats were smoking horribly. Now you have to be patient with these 3116s as the throttle response is abysmal, but I kept nudging up the throttles until Swing Set was cooking along at nearly 29 miles per hour, and that's with full water and fuel, plus all the other junk we have on board. I never was able to get more than 34 out of her with hardly any weight aboard, so I called installing the new air filters a success and we headed for the barn.
Rosie and I dropped anchor in practically the same spot in Destin Harbor that we had already been setting, in between two of the six or so derelict boats scattered around in there. We grabbed Holly and set out in the dinghy for some sight seeing. We cruised the canals and looked at houses and didn't happen to see anything we wanted to plunk down some cash on, so it was back to the boat we went.
We chilled out for a while until cocktail hour and then we took a couple of Busch Lights to the bow and watched the tour boats go by and let Holly bark away at them. Someone cruised by in a pontoon boat and tossed us a tennis ball and we promptly made a gift of it to the dog.
Holly had never seen a ball before and things were going well until she first saw it bounce. Every time I would bounce it on the deck, Holly woud bark and cower in Rosie's lap. It was pretty funny to watch and after a couple of beers it apparently had us entertained.

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to invite you to a wonderful and touching event that will be happening here at the Alton Marina next week Saturday , September 22 at 1:00 p.m.

The VA is saluting the past and present veterans with a wreath dedication (each arm of the services will be represented by a wreath that will be laid into the river).

There will be bagpipes, stories , recognitions and lots of volunteers putting on military displays. They were here last year at

The Alton Marina and it was a beautiful presentation. Mayor Tom Hoechst, State Rep Dan Beiser and Senator Bill Haine will be attending and speaking.

This is one of the most moving events I have ever attended and so deserving of the men and women who have served our country.

Hope to see you September 22nd.

Mark Twain Lake

Increase In Lake Visitors This Year........

In spite of intense heat this summer, visitors turned out in droves to visit Mark Twain Lake. From October 2011, through July 2012, 1.75 million people headed to Mark Twain Lake, compared to 1.58 million visitors during the same time period last year. The park's camping numbers decreased this year, and launch fees decreased by about five percent. The new visitor's center and beach attendance seemed to offset the decreases........

Little John's Motorsports upcoming New Athens Race

Click pic to enlarge

Hi Bill,

Just a reminder that Little John’s Motorsports has a big drag boat race coming up this weekend, September 15 & 16, in New Athens, IL. It is located at the Kaskaskia River Marina Campground (1 Harbor Point Drive, New Athens, IL 62264) which is about a 1 hour 15 minute drive from St. Charles. Randy Bicknese and the Kwitchabitchin 9.0 second boat is coming off a big win at last weekend’s race in Hamilton, OH. He is in the lead for the 2012 season High Points Championship in three associations; the Kentucky Drag Boat Association, the St. Louis Drag Boat Association, and the Lucas Oil Division 3 National Championship. It’s a comfortable lead but his main competitors still have a mathematical chance to overtake him in this final points race of the 2012 season so it will be an exciting race and fun weekend to experience.

If you’ve never been to a drag boat race before, this is a great, close venue to witness the speeds and competition for the first time. The SLDBA puts on a nice show with food and drink vendors and the marina has a bar & grill on site for some extra entertainment. Stop by the Little John’s Motorsport’s pit to see how our crew preps and tunes the Kwitchabitchin boat to get it dialed-in within thousands of a second. Also check out our new race trailer logos provided by the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series…thanks Ken Dollar!

Little John, Randy, Johnny, Dutch & crew have put so much time, effort, and support into this race season and are fired up for New Athens. Having friends and family come support that dedication makes the victory even sweeter. We would love to see a large RiverBills crowd out there to cheer our team to victory and a National Championship!

One photo is of our race trailer with the new logos and banner. The other photo is of Randy in the Kwitchabitchin boat during the 2010 New Athens race which he won.

While Pere Marquette State Park has events throughout the year, the most popular time of year to visit the park is beginning next weekend. However, this Saturday, there are two events are planned, including a nature hike. During October, more nature hikes are planned, as well as Owl Programs each Friday evening. There will also be a few fall color tours. Scott Isringhausen, Pere Marquette's site interpreter stated that the summer's drought will likely have put a damper on the colors on the trees this fall........

River Basin Mayors Meet In St. Louis........
