Pictures of the Day ..... were sent to us by Paul & Joanie Barbary who hail out of Grafton Harbor in the boat......... "The Last One"

Hi Bill,

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. We did.

Jon & Sue Freeman invited Joanie an myself to take a ride on their boat the "Seed ya Later". I try never to pass up a boat ride. The sky looked a little questionable, but we took off anyway. We had a great ride to Hardin and back and only got a little wet. I've attached a pic of our skipper, Jon, and the girls, Sue and Joanie relaxing on the aft deck.

There is still a lot of boating left this year.

See you on the river.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in  2011......  was sent to us by Sherri Dyson who hails out of Port Charles Marina

Bill,

I had the most interesting visitor on Saturday 09/03/11

Ty and Tracy, who hail from Woodland, came to Port Charles for a light bulb and brought their newest, exotic addition, Bindi, an eight week old kangaroo. No River Rat here....We officially have a River-Roo...or Rangaroo. I thought I had seen it all, but apparently not. Leisure boating with a kangaroo is now something I have seen!!!

Happy Labor Day.

Paddling News

Men Take Journey In A Dugout Canoe........

Recently, father and son Dean and Dave Campbell started a journey from Beardstown, Illinois to St. Louis in a dugout canoe.  The pair were decked out in period gear, as they departed from Alton on the final portion of their journey.

Dean Campbell came up with the idea to construct a dugout canoe and paddle the rivers while working as a tour guide at the Illinois State Capitol, as an homage to President Lincoln, who originally came to Springfield in a dugout canoe.

Campbell constructed the dugout using some donated hand tools, an ax, and an adze, an ax-like tool used to trim and shape timber........

     Low Water Delays Bridge Project........

The extremely low water levels along the Mississippi River are causing the latest delay for crews building the New Mississippi River Bridge.

Barges moving the huge panels that will make up the bridge's road deck have been hampered by the low water conditions. Also, the low water is making it difficult to position barges beneath workareas, especially along the Illinois banks.

Greg Horn, project director for the Missouri Department of Transportation stated that this delay wont be more than a week or two. The span should open as planned in early 2014........

Yangtze River Near Chongquing, China

River Turns Red For Reasons Unknown........

Recently, the Yangtze River near the city of Chongquing turned red, and officials have no idea why. The Yangtze is the third longest river in the world, and the largest and longest river in China. The red coloring is most pronounced at Chongquing, where the Yangtze meets the Jailin River, however, the phenomenon has appeared in other areas. Officials are investigating the cause........

Bill:

We, along with some of our local friends, visited the River Rock Grill on Tellico Lake last night.

You may recall that I sent you a pic of the River Rock Grill before (on Tellico Lake) and, after that, Mike And Rosie visited there. (They made quite an impression.)

This time, though, I received permission to put a Riverbills bumper sticker on the wall in a prominent place place.

I've attached two pics:

A) One of your bumper sticker

B) One of out group plus a our server.

From left to right are: Lauraine, Janis (our Captain), Janette (in front), Nicole (our wonderful server)
and me.

Manny Bohn, manager of River Rock, took the group pic --so blame him if you don't like it!

I love this place and apparently so did lots of other boaters. It was pretty busy for a Thursday night after Labor Day.

Susan and I will be home in the next few days. We have to come home. We're out of bumper stickers!

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in  2011......  was sent to us by Steve Whittemore

Hello RiverBill

The best afternoon of fishing !!! My buddy Marlin Rogers and I had the best time fishing Sunday (09/04/2011). We were in the Bolter Slough down stream from the wing dam and started hauling in channel cats and Blues as fast as we could bait hooks. The fishing was great but the laughing and fun was better. Marlin caught the biggest, the blue in the picture. We stayed late and caught the last rays of sun coming up the Dardenne headed back to River Side Marina.

It don't get much better !!!

Sad News....

Kenneth W. Simon  Has Passed Away

Dear RiverBill,

I'm asking for your assistance in helping to spread the Funeral Arrangements on RiverBills for my Uncle, Kenneth W. Simon who passed away on Labor Day.

Most knew him as "Kenny" or "Ken". He was a Lifetime Boater in the area, a model Boat Enthusiast, a Longtime River Friend to Many, and a walking World Book of Knowledge on Boating, Parts & Boats in General. He, along with his Father & Brother, started Venetian Harbor on the family farm ground in Portage Des Sioux, MO in the 1940's and was instrumental in making it one of the premier Full-Service Marinas in the Alton Pool during the Boating Boom of the 60's & 70's. Although Ownership left the family in 1969, Kenny continued working at Venetian. He left there for several years to manage Two Rivers Marina in Louisiana, MO all while continuing to live & boat in the local area. He returned to manage Universal Marine Corporation, which was a Wholesale Boat Part Warehouse business within Venetian Harbor, for many years during the 80's & early 90's. He then worked in the Parts Division at St. Charles Boat & Motor until his retirement. He mostly boated out of Venetian Harbor & Woodland Marina in their boats named "Nauti-K". I've attached a link for the funeral arrangements at Baue Funeral Home & St. Cletus Catholic Church. I've also attached a few pics from my last boat ride with him and my father on September 30th, 2010 in his final boat, a 55' Chris Craft Roamer named "Nauti-K", when we took a short sea trial/test ride out of Woodland. There is also 1 pic of some of his boats from over his boating filled life. He later sold this boat, just earlier this year, at the young age of 80. I very much appreciate your help in notifying his fellow Boaters & Friends of his Passing on behalf of his family and my father, Gerald "Jerry" Simon, who is another lifetime river mechanic in the boating community. Thank you RiverBills!

     IEPA Targets River Pollution........

On Thursday, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency laid out their plans for cleaning up the Illinois River. This project will focus on reducing pollution in two watersheds that supply the Illinois River in the Peoria area. The pollution comes from sewer spills, erosion, storm water runoff and even road salt. Suggestions that the IPEA are making include education, pet waste programs and street sweeping........

River Dredging Slated For The Bismarck Area........

There are two dredging projects planned for the Missouri River near the Bismarck-Mandan North Dakota area, to help prevent flooding caused by ice jams.

The flooding last year dramatically altered the river channel, leaving sizable sand deposits south of the cities. Dredging will be a short term solution, and officials will be looking for long term solutions to the problem.

The dredging project will cost $750,000. The North Dakota State Water Commission needs to approve the funding for the project........

Red River Near Marksville, Louisiana

Red River Affected By Low Mississippi River Levels........

The drought across the Midwest has caused a variety of problems along the Mississippi River. Sand dunes are appearing in the middle of the channel, causing barges to run aground. As a result, barges are carrying lighter loads to reduce their draft. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are constantly dredging to keep up. This is pulling funding away from the maintenance needed along the Red River.........

Reader Commentary

Hoppies Marina article in the Post

Bill
If you would please post something about the article from the Sat, St. Louis Post Dispatch concerning Hoppies Marina. You see, the COE constructed 3 dikes just below the marina in 2008/2009. The marina and fellow boaters have contacted the COE about these and the damage they are causing to the marina and river. They are putting this mom and pop marina out of business!! The article is misleading, but needs as many fellow boaters comments to help in the fight against the COE and there lack of concern on what they have done to this business. Hope your boaters can show support for the fight to get these dikes removed!!!
You see the The COE did a extensive study called the “Cliff Cave Kimswick Hydraulic Sediment Response Model Study Upper Mississippi river Miles 168-156.6”. There were several structures modeled with several alternative changes done to each structure, to achieve there goal.
The purpose of the study was to design structural modifications to the existing dike field to enhance the aquatic habitat diversity and the flow dynamic within this area. There were 21 design alternate plans tested in this area.
Hoppies Marina is located within this area studied and there is no mention of the 3 dikes that were constructed in 2008/2009.
When we talked to the COE about the construction of these 3 structures into the studied area, Andy Schimfp P.E.Operation Manager, replied “this will not change the outcome of the modeled area”.When I spoke with Julie Ziino,COE Executive Assistant, she stated “theses 3 dikes were merely maintenance structures placed over old wooden fence pilings”. Now this is when it gets interesting, at the COE meeting in January 2012, Leonard Hopkins from the COE stated to us “there has never been wood fence structures at this location”. At this point the COE changes the name of the dikes to” Training Structures” at the cost to the public at 1.5 million dollars. Who are they training? The COE stated they would monitor the area, they can do that on foot now. Now per the study from the COE, trees and vegetation will start to grow reclaiming the bank lines. Again, why would they have constructed these dikes just below a marina?
The COE just now stated that it would be illegal for them to do anything about this silting problem—that they have caused. It is about time to take a legal stand point on this matter. This country is owned by the people, and the COE is employed by the people. Do they really have the right to put people out of business and close down a facility that services the community? It is time to check the law books, someone out there reading this has already seen this happen and can help us fight the COE from putting this mom and pop marina out of business!

Little John's Motorsports Update

It was a wet and exciting weekend in Wheatland, MO for the Lucas Oil Diamond Drag Boat Nationals as over 100 drag boats from across the country did their best to impress the large crowds and CBS Sports cameras! Little John’s Motorsports competed in the 9.0 second Top Eliminator (TE) class which was the largest class of the weekend with 19 boats qualifying. Friday’s test and tune session was cancelled due to poor weather conditions and Saturday’s qualifying rounds were shortened to just one round per class as the racers fought through a constant mist of rain and wind. Even with the adverse conditions on Saturday, the drivers were ready and on their games as not one TE boat broke out (went faster than 9.000 sec) which made the brackets tight with all good qualifying times. Randy Bicknese had a solid qualifying pass of 9.06 sec which placed him #3 out of 19 boats in the bracket. The sun finally appeared on Sunday and the team was up early preparing for the early morning start as Randy’s class was the first called to the water at 8:30 am since they had the largest class with the most boats to compete that day. The boat was tuned in, performing just as anticipated, and the team confidently breezed through the first two rounds of eliminations placing Randy into the quarterfinals. In this third round however, Randy was nosed at the starting line by 0.1 seconds and couldn’t catch up to his competitor. Even with the loss, Randy finished 4th to give Little John’s Motorsports recognition as a top 4 finisher. Most importantly, the team earned valuable points for the season high points championship in three associations. Randy now has a comfortable lead in the Kentucky Drag Boat Association, the St. Louis Drag Boat Association, and the coveted Lucas Oil National High Points Championship. Randy can lock up the KDBA championship in this weekend’s race located in Hamilton, OH. This is the first time that drag boats will be racing at the annual Great Miami River Days festival so the Little John crew is excited to be in the middle of the event which draws over 10,000 people. The National Championship will be determined at the final points race of the season the weekend of September 14 & 15 located in ever-so-close New Athens, IL on the Kaskaskia River. It’s an easy 1 hour 15 minute drive or motorcycle ride from St. Charles and is located at a marina which houses a bar & grill which usually provides music and good free entertainment during the evenings. There will also be concession and beer stands open during the races on Saturday and Sunday. Since the Creve Coeur Lake race didn’t take place this season, the New Athens race will be the home venue for the Little John’s Motorsports team. We’d love to see all of our friends there cheering us on to victory and a National Championship! Thanks for your continued support!

Metro East Levees

Candidates Promise Start On Levee Project........

Wednesday, GOP candidates in the 12th and 13th U.S. House race promised to slash regulatory barriers holding up progress on planned upgrades to 70 miles of metro east flood protection levees.

Candidates Jason Plummer, 12th District GOP nominee and Rodney Davis, 13th District GOP nominees attended a news conference along the East St. Louis riverfront, where they discussed the negative economic consequences of delaying repairs to the levees.

Delaying the levee repairs has prevented capitol investments in the 12th and 13th districts, because business owners are uncertain of their future........

Wake Boards & Waverunners Take Back Seat To Flyboards........

A new sport is set to supplant wake boards and Waverunners at the Lake of the Ozarks - Flyboarding. The Flyboard is likened to a jetpack for your feet, minus the flames. It allows propulsion in the air and under water, kind of like a powered wakeboard. The Flyboard has to be connected to a PWC, which pumps water to a board similar to a wakeboard attached to the rider's feet. The water is shot out of the bottom of the board, providing propulsion........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Orange Beach, Alabama

It has rained pretty steadily since we arrived in Orange Beach two days ago. A "remnant" of Hurricane Isaac is hanging around just off the gulf coast and is not only giving us lots of rain, it's threatening to develop into a tropical storm.

This is our view from our anchorage in Ingram Bayou looking to the south, to Gulf Shores and the coast, which is over the key. On our first night in here a nice breeze blew the whole time and we didn't turn on the air conditioning. The wind generators were validating themselves and we were making power. The land is flat here and the wind isn't blocked by trees, but if we wanted a little more wind protection for some reason, this bayou winds back some to the north.
I spent the first part of the day on Tuesday arranging the shipment of new end caps for our swim platform rub rail. I'm getting two so I have a spare as there are four of them on the boat. I called Morgan at Marine Max at Lake of the Ozarks and he found the caps for me in Miami. He offered to have them shipped to us but I still didn't have an address to have them sent to. This could be made into a long story, but not too interesting, so let me just give you a synopsis: After spending a couple of hours on the phone to several different marinas, etc., Sportsman's Marina in Orange Beach ordered the end caps for us from the Marine Max in Miami, and also ordered two new air filters for our Walker Airseps. Nancy is the parts manager at Sportsman's and she has been very helpful in facilitating everything.
Once all that was settled, I got an email from a blog reader in Panama City, offering any assistance we may need when we pass through that area. Had it been just a few hours earlier, we could have had our parts shipped there and we wouldn't have to wait here until the parts come, either on Friday or even Monday. That's how things go sometimes.

News Release From BoatUS

Flotilla" Award Goes to Small US Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit in the Hot Desert
Best Flotilla 9-7 of District 11SR Takes "Best Flotilla in the Nation" Honors

LAKE MOHAVE, NV, September 5, 2012 – On a remote lake in the hot Nevada-Arizona desert, being bigger isn’t necessarily better. One of the smallest US Coast Guard Auxiliary organizations, Flotilla 9-7 of District 11SR, was honored by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) with the prestigious “Best Flotilla in the Nation” Award for 2011 at the Auxiliary’s National Convention held in San Antonio, Texas. The flotilla, which has just one patrol vessel and the bare minimum number of members to sustain a unit, bested over 1,000 other flotillas from across the US for the top honors.

Located in the southern portion of Lake Mead Recreation Area in Cottonwood Canyon on the shore of 67-mile long Lake Mohave, Flotilla 9-7’s six Vessel Examiners managed to complete 1117 free Vessel Safety Checks, over 400 more than the previous year. In addition, their single patrol boat, manned by 9-7’s coxswains and crew completed 21 safety patrols, verified the latitude and longitude of 33 Aids to Navigation, completed public affairs and educational missions, and provided recreational boating safety information to thousands of lake visitors.

The sparkling, yet treacherous 67-mile stretch of water downstream of the Hoover Dam is hemmed by a sheer-walled canyon and has blistering summer temperatures as well as afternoon winds known to kick up four-footers that can smash boats against sheer cliffs and scuttle small craft.

The mission of the all-volunteer US Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of citizens, ports and waterways, balancing the missions of recreational boating safety and US Coast Guard support with maritime homeland security and other challenges that emerged as a result of a post-9/11 era. With nearly 32,000 men and women, the Auxiliary has units in every state.

BoatUS President Margaret Podlich said, “The men and women of Flotilla 9-7 excelled at their duties and did an amazing amount of work to help boaters stay clear of the dangers of the lake. By doing that, they ensured everyone had a positive experience and came home safely.

Missouri River Near Chesterfield, Missouri

Levee Trail Growing.... As Well As It's Use....

The Monarch Chesterfield Levee Trail runs along the top of the Monarch Chesterfield Levee, and will soon be ten and a half miles of asphalt. This is including an addition that was recently approved.

Tom McCarthy, director of Chesterfield's parks and recreation, stated that more and more people are using the trail on a regular basis. Brian McGownd, Chesterfield's public works director said that a trail atop the Monarch Chesterfield Levee was always in the plans.

The trail connects to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife's Big Muddy Refuge, as well as two of Chesterfield's wetlands areas near the Missouri River. The new Boone Bridge will connect the trail to the Katy Trail........

River History....

September 5, 1856 in River History

The “Great White Arabia" sank on the Missouri River on Sept. 5, 1856 after hitting a jagged sycamore snag at Quindaro Bend, when she was less than one hour out of Kansas City. Ten minutes after hitting the snag she lay at the bottom of the Missouri River.
Since that area of the river was shallow at the time the upper decks stayed above the water. This allowed for the escape of all passengers and crew. The only casualty was a mule that was tied on the aft lower deck.
The steamboat was 188 feet long and had been operating on the Missouri River for only three years. She carried 130 passengers and some 200 tons of freight when she went down.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

First Stop At Hannibal For New Riverboat........

On Sunday, Hannibal residents turned out to Glascock's Landing to get their first peek at the new riverboat, the Queen of the Mississippi.

She arrived early Sunday, and stayed until the evening, A number of the Queen's 150 passengers whiled the day away touring Hannibal by trolley, visiting the Mark Twain sites, and shopping at the downtown stores.

Sunday was the second day of an eight day cruise from St. Louis to Minneapolis/St. Paul. The cruise had begun eight days earlier with a trip form New Orleans to St. Louis........

Boat Manufacturer

    Lund Gender Bias Suit Settled........

Recently, federal contractor Lund Boat Co. reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs that will settle alleged discrimination in hiring.

Lund, a subsidiary of Brunswick, agreed to pay $295,000 in back wages and interest to 185 female job applicants who were not hired for entry level manufacturing positions.

Investigators with the Federal Contract Compliance Programs reviewed Lund's facility in New York Mills starting with September 2007 and found that Lund failed to ensure qualified female applicants received equal contemplation without regard to gender........

Lower Mississippi River

    Draft Restrictions Have Been Eased........

As heavy rains from Hurricane Isaac replenished the drought-depleted Mississippi River, the U.S. Coast Guard eased barge draft restrictions along the Lower Mississippi River. This is allowing shippers to move heavier-loaded barges. The Coast Guard is now allowing barge drafts of 10 feet, up from the previous 9 foot limit that had been in place for a month. Normally, drafts of over 12 feet are allowed........

Marina Owners Claim River Dikes Causing Silt Issues........

Recently, the boat ramp at Hoppies Marine Service was shut down because it was silted in, making the ramp useless. The owners of Hoppies, Charles and Fern Hopkins, are blaming the three rock dikes just downstream from the marina for the silting issues. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the dikes to save money on dredging in that area, and have no intention of removing them. Hoppies is the only gas dock for over 400 miles, and was a critical access point for the Rock Community Fore Protection District's rescue boat........

   Actor Rescued By Coast Guard........

Over the weekend, Hollywood actor Russell Crowe was kayaking off of the coast of Long Island, New York with a friend. Crowe reportedly flagged down a Coast Guard vessel for help, as they ran out of daylight. The Cost Guard towed the pair to shore........

US Coast Guard

   News Release

Date: Sept. 03, 2012

Coast Guard assists actor Russell Crowe, kayaking off Long Island, N.Y.

NEW YORK – A Coast Guard boat crew assisted 2 kayakers, actor Russell Crowe and his friend, near Huntington Bay, Long Island, N.Y., Saturday evening.

A Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Necks, N.Y., rescue boat crew was on patrol in Huntington Bay when they were flagged down by Crowe and his friend around 10 p.m., who had lost their way kayaking off Long Island.

The 48-year-old actor and his friend launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday and beached their kayaks in Huntington Bay after nightfall and sea conditions worsened. The two men were picked up with their kayaks by the Coast Guard boat crew and taken to Huntington Harbor.

The two men were reported not injured and wearing their lifejackets.

“It is common for the Coast Guard to assist boaters like this, but it was very cool to help Russell Crowe and his friend,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Swieciki, the boat coxswain for the case. "Crowe and his friend were very grateful to get a lift."

The Coast Guard urges kayakers to always wear their life jackets when out on the water. Crowe and his friend were correct to beach their kayaks and request assistance when it got dark and conditions worsened on the water.

     Baja Resumes Boat Production........

After a few months shutdown, Baja Marine is back building boats. Last winter, an appointed receiver put Baja into Chapter 11 bankruptcy, however, a judge decided that the receiver did not have the authority to do so. The company is back in the hands of Liberty. Baja customers have been demanding larger, faster boats with new graphics, so the company is reintroducing three offshore models, the 278 Performance, and the 30 and 35 Outlaws........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Lower Mobile Bay to the Intracoastal Water Way

We got an early start on Sunday morning at Dog River Marina. Engine oil was changed on both main engines as well as the generator. My earlier decision to buy two five gallon plastic buckets was a good one. The waste oil all fit in both buckets, plus two one gallon empty oil containers that I had stowed in the engine room. Now, we have the four empty 2.5 gallon empty oil containers to use next time. If we keep buying oil in the 2.5 gallon jugs, we'll just keep trading them off. There are places to keep the empty 2.5 gallon jugs. We've decided to not haul around all of our oil anymore. It's weight we don't need to be carrying; we'll just get our oil when we need it, unless we plan on being somewhere were a trip to a big box store or auto parts is impossible.
I cleaned the two K&N air filters that fit our Walker AirSeps. The engines rev up fine and appear to be running fine after the oil change. The test will be when we head out and the engines are under load.
The port engine is still losing a little coolant, to the tune of about two cups of coolant for 400 hours. I don't think I'll lose any sleep over it.
While I was toiling away changing the oil and such (I also spliced a new thimble into our extra anchor line where I had to cut it), Rosie was finishing up all of the laundry. We both finished our tasks and then took showers and had lunch. There was lots of boats cruising up and down the river as people were enjoying the Labor Day weekend. The boating around here hasn't been too good lately with the hurricane passing through, so boaters were catching up.
We dropped the dinghy and gathered up Holly and we took a ride. First we went up the Dog River for a few miles and then turned around and went out into Mobile Bay. The ride was a little rough out in the bay in the dinghy, so we headed back in and cruised through a couple of marinas. We saw some very beautiful vessels and some not so much. We wonder why anyone would have a boat that they let just go to ruin from non-use.
We parked the dinghy back behind Swing Set and grabbed a couple of beers and just sat in our cockpit and watched the boat traffic idle by. I made use of the dock hose to cool off periodically as the heat was stifling. The river where we were docked is a no wake zone and we were right on the channel, a perfect spot for people watching. Nearly everyone waved as they went by; in fact, the boaters waved too when we were out in the dinghy. It was like everybody was spending the first time ever on their boats. One thing though, when we were sitting on the boat, a woman from one of the other boats docked there walked by and as we said hello, she says, "Y'all sure picked a strange time to come south, being hurricane season and all". I was thinking that we were no stranger than all the hundreds of other boaters out buzzing around the area, and the ten of thousands of boaters all through the south. Why can't we join in on the fun?
At 4 P.M., music started playing at a bar just across the river from us called The River Shack. When we passed by it earlier we could see that they had a long dock out front and a big open air type bar and the band was "outside" more or less. We put Holly away and took the dinghy over to the River Shack

Lower Mississippi River

Record Low Water Chokes Up Barge Traffic........

The level of the Mississippi River has been reduced by drought to a relative trickle, and all of the rainfall from Hurricane Isaac has done little to improve the situation.

Crops of corn and soybeans are awaiting shipment aboard Mississippi River barges, and only have a window of around 10 days to ship before spoiling.

Thanks to budgetary issues, the government does not routinely dredge the Mississippi River, setting it up to be more susceptible to silting........

The Great Lakes

Lake Michigan Haven For Sunken Wrecks........

Back in the 1800s and early 1900s, Lake Michigan was a major nautical shipping lane, and the storm beaten waters off of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula are a veritable graveyard of wrecks.

Divers are able to check out at least three dozen wrecks in the area, some in shallow water, and some at depths of up to 100 feet.

In the early 1990s, the invasive quagga and zebra mussels arrived in the ballast water of tankers, and have colonized nearly every exposed piece of metal and wood. Their unexpected benefit is that they have greatly improved the water clarity........
