Summer Of Paddling A Big Draw........

Saturday, paddlers of all ages turned out to the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary at West Alton, Missouri for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Summer of Paddling Event.

The free event was a day on the water for anyone with a canoe, kayak, paddleboard, and even a couple of small sailboats.  There were several guides on hand to teach participants how to get onto the water safely.

The Summer of Paddling Event is part of a series of events held along the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana intended to introduce people to recreation along local waterways........

The Delta Queen

    An E-mail from Franz Neumeier

Dear RiverBill

The Delta Queen is about to be sold to Florida - please express your concerns!

As you may have heard already, the Delta Queen might be sold to a hotelier in New Smyrna Beach, FL who intends to convert her into a floating hotel, supposedly much like her sister ship, the Delta King in Sacramento, CA.

Very likely this will make it impossible for the boat to ever sail again.

What makes the Delta Queen so special is the fact her original steam plant is completely intact unlike any other overnight passenger boat, but if the Delta Queen's fans don’t act quickly her uniqueness may be lost forever.

In order for deal to go through the potential buyer must obtain approval from several agencies. The Save the Deta Queen Campaign recommends supporters to take a couple of moments to review this information and contact the agencies listed below to express your concerns. The boat’s wooden superstructure was not designed for salt water environments and will probably not survive long there. The National Trust for Historic Preservation would also like to hear from you regarding the Delta Queen as she is designated a National Historic Landmark.

According to Smyrna Beach’s City Manager Pam Brangaccio the commission will consider the proposal for the Delta Queen at its Sept. 11 meeting.

For more details about the plans regarding the Delta Queen at Smyrna Beach, see the full article the Daytona Beach New-Journal: “Delta Queen riverboat hotel remains sole proposal for NSB land” -- (http://www.news-journalonline.com/news/local/southeast-volusia/2012/07/19/delta-queen-riverboat-hotel-remains-sole-proposal-for-nsb-land.html).

The Delta Queen needs your support.  Please call, write, email and fax your concerns (see contact information below). Thanks for your support!

Yours Sincerely,
Franz Neumeier

Lower Mississippi River

River Traffic Still Moving Despite Low Water........

In spite of the low water conditions along the Mississippi River, traffic is still moving.   Compared to other locations along the Mississippi River, water levels at Natchez, Mississippi are a little higher, but still eight feet below normal.  River levels at Vicksburg, Mississippi are about 12 feet lower than normal.  The U.S. army Corps of Engineers are currently dredging ports along the Lower Mississippi River, although, no ports have been reported as closed due to low water........

Lower Mississippi River

    Ship Traffic Briefly Halted........

Recently, ship traffic was stopped along the Lower Mississippi River, so that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could build an underwater barrier in Louisiana.  Apparently, low water conditions along the Mississippi River are allowing salt water to creep into the channel, threatening drinking water supplies.........

    Accident Memorial Has Been Proposed........

On the night of May 19th, two jon boats ferrying party-goers from a party on a sand bar to the shore collided, killing four of the passengers.

An idea of a memorial for those who perished in the accident was floated, something that would be visible from the river.  A lighthouse, placed at the entrance to the Bluff Harbor Marina..

The group heading up the lighthouse efforts has received approval form the U.S. Coast Guard for placing the lighthouse at the marina entrance.  They are waiting for final approval from the marina owners........

Missouri River Maintenance

River Commission Meets To Hear Concerns........

Thursday, the Mississippi River Commission met in Washington, Missouri to listen to comments related to the management of the Missouri River.

Commission members had decided to to tour the Missouri River between North Dakota and St. Louis to observe damages caused by last year's flooding, as well as inspect the current low water conditions.

The Missouri River does not see the amount of commercial traffic that the Mississippi River does.  Some of the meeting attendees stated that the reason is that a 9 foot channel is not maintained........

Boat Drinks !

A big thanks goes out to Capt'n Mike and his First Mate Rosie for stepping up to the plate on National RUM DAY and sharing their celebration with us in their blog and e-mails...........   It's a real Holiday.  IT IS !  (Sorry about the headache)

Good News for September...

On August 2, 2007 the United States Senate declared the entire month of September as National Bourbon Heritage Month.   So, It seems like the only the right thing to do is mix yourself up a Bourbon "Boat Drink" and help celebrate this one all month long !

See you on the river

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

  Heading Down the Tenn-Tom

After we got Swing Set back into the water last Tuesday we headed back over to Zippy Cove to wait for our props to be repaired. I don't know where the week went, but before we knew it, Friday morning was upon us. This may have something to do with our friend Bill, of RiverBills.com, having declared last Thursday as National Rum day. We embraced the holiday and gave it the treatment any good holiday deserves.
I do know we got our sump box cleaned out and a fair amount of waxing was accomplished too. Our weather had been very nice with the exception of a decent thunderstorm that we woke up for on Thursday night. We stood watch for the duration of the worst of it to make sure the anchor held, but it didn't last long.
We had been tracking our package with the new Garmin GPS unit in it and we were still a go for getting it by Friday end of day. I had called the prop shop on Thursday and our props were finished and we planned on picking them up on Friday afternoon as well. By mid-day, we left Zippy and popped on over to Grand Harbor to fuel up and get a pump out. We also exchanged some books for three new ones. We both use Kindles, but take advantage of real books when we can and Grand Harbor has a book exchange. We took on 184 gallons, not bad since our last fueling was at Fort Loudon, about two hundred miles upstream.
Next, we motored over to Aqua Yacht and after finding an empty slip, we walked up to the service department and were handed the keys to a nearly new Ford F-150 to go fetch our props. We picked up the props, which only needed "an adjustment". This means that only one blade per prop was bent, so the cost was minimal. We got out of there for about $400 for both props. Tony at Aqua Yacht gave us permission to run by Piggly Wiggly too, where we picked up a few items. It had been a week since we last shopped and there is always something we need. We keep a running list on the iPhone so we have it whenever we find ourselves in a position to shop. One more quick stop to top off the Ford with gas and we returned to Aqua Yacht to thank the staff there for all of their help. We also were able to pick up our new chart plotter as the UPS delivery had come while we were gone.
Cafe St. Clair is at Aqua Yacht and we decided to go there for dinner. We had some time to kill, so we walked the dock we were on and checked out some boats and talked to some other boaters. Ronn Walker was washing his boat and we got to talking because I noticed his boat was for sale. Ronn is an airline pilot and may be heading for the Philipines for a job and has to sell his boat. He learned about our trip and loaned us a guide to the Tenn-Tom waterway. When we get to Mobile Bay, we'll pop it in the mail and return it to him. If it fits, it ships.
We had a nice dinner at Cafe St. Clair, but we should have stopped with just a salad. We both hardly ate the pasta we ordered, but our left overs are safe and sound in the fridge for dinner on a night coming up. We returned to the boat before it got dark and took Swing Set back over to Zippy Cove for one more night.
We took our time this morning over a fine breakfast and eventually shoved off at 9 A.M.

Pictured is where Yellow Creek narrows down and becomes "The Ditch". There wasn't much to see for the next three hours until we came to Blue Springs Lake. At mile 415 we found a nice cove and put the hook out. After over four hours at the helm, I just wanted to read a bit and get a nap. The work I wanted to do on the boat was going to be noisy and there were two boats in the cove with us and I didn't want to disturb their fishing.
By mid-afternoon, the fishermen had given up and I went to work fabricating a cover for the dash board to mount our new GPS/chart plotter. I had some Lexan left over from when we made the towers for the wind generators, so I used that instead of buying some Star Board. A flush mount kit is available, but the hole from our current chart plotter is still bigger that we need for the flush mount kit and some type of trim ring was going to be necessary anyway, so I decided to use the surface mount, but on the space where the other unit was. Work was delayed while some paint had to dry, pictures will come later.
We bought some chicken at the deli at Piggly Wiggly and had that for dinner. I've just about cured my need for fried chicken for the time being. Rosie and I played a game of Scrabble and now here I am, writing this blog and fighting sleep and it's not even 9 P.M. yet.
This lake is very pretty, but rustic. There are almost no homes and the water is clear, but not as clear as Tellico Lake. We may hang out here tomorrow while I finish up the installation of the Garmin unit, but we'll decide that tomorrow. Why not?

Missouri Department of Conservation

Bowfishing nabs new state record river carpsucker

BELTON, MO – Cody Chaney, 18, of Belton holds the new official Missouri state record for river carpsucker. Chaney was bow fishing with his father Terry, younger brother Brady and grandfather Bill Hill in a spring-fed cove at Lake of the Ozarks just after midnight May 27 when he struck something big.

“We didn’t realize it was a record, but we thought it had potential,” said Terry Chaney. “We actually thought it was a highfin carpsucker from the looks of the fish. But once we brought it to our conservation agent Phil Needham, he helped us figure out that we really had a river carpsucker.”

Cody’s catch weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounce, and was 20.5 inches long. Missouri’s previous state record, which stood for a mere three weeks, was a 5-pound, 6-ounce fish caught May 6 on a trotline in the South Grand River.

“Last year, we actually shot one that was bigger,” said Terry. “But it was late and we didn’t have enough ice to keep the fish alive, so it rotted.”

This time, the family was prepared and had a spare cooler with ice ready to hold any potential record fish. According to Terry, the family learned their lesson and never goes fishing without a cooler full of ice just to hold fish.

Cody has been bow fishing for about three years and spends approximately 300 days a year enjoying the Missouri outdoors, either hunting or fishing.

“During the summer, whenever we have a free weekend, you’ll find us out bow fishing,” said Terry. “It is definitely one of our favorite family summertime activities.”

The river carpsucker (Carpiodes carpio) is silvery, with a deep, thick body, a long, sickle-shaped dorsal fin and whitish lower fins. It is also called "white carp," "silver carp" and "quillback." It is the most abundant and widely distributed carpsucker in Missouri.

River carpsuckers prefer quiet, silt-bottomed pools, backwaters and oxbows of large streams and deeper pools of small prairie creeks. They also often thrive in impoundments. Adults typically are 12 to 15 inches long.

The river carpsucker is often confused with the highfin carpsucker. The two can be distinguished by the length of the first ray of the dorsal fin, which reaches to or beyond the back of the dorsal fin in the highfin carpsucker.

Conservation makes Missouri a great place to hunt and fish. More information about Missouri fishing records is available at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/reports/records.

Lower Mississippi River

     Exposed Sandbars Called Hazardous........

The drought conditions across the Midwest has caused the level of the major rivers to fall, exposing sandbars that experts are stating may be dangerous.

These sandbars may appear to be inviting beaches, however, Steve Barry, the emergency management chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Memphis stated that even though the sand appears dry on top, it is saturated mud underneath, with an undercurrent, creating a ledge.

Back in 1988, the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers were as low as they are now, and at least seven deaths were attributed to destabilized sandbars.  Earlier in the month, an 11 year old sank in mud up to her waist along the Mississippi River near New Madrid........

Coast Guard closes portion of Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard closed a portion of the Mississippi River, Friday, after a chemical plant caught fire near Belle Chasse.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of New Orleans closed the Mississippi River from mile marker 74 to mile marker 78 to all vessels.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 2:48 p.m. that the Sun Drilling facility caught fire reportedly from a lightning strike. A storage tank at the plant containing divinylbenzene reportedly caught fire.

A Coast Guard Station New Orleans 45-foot Response Boat — Medium and crew are on scene assisting with monitoring vessel traffic at mile marker 78.

"We closed the river as a precautionary measure to protect mariners," said Cmdr. Russ Bowen, chief of response for Sector New Orleans.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2008...... was sent  to us by Rebecca Cate, who hails out of Debuque, Iowa.   The HMR C. Bernadette Able is coming our way.

Bill,

HMR C. Bernadette Able is coming your way. This home made raft was built by two young ladies from the East Coast. It took them 3 months to build. Lindsey and Hannah are on their way now down the Mississippi River . They began in Clearwater , MN mid-June and are somewhere south of Dubuque , IA now. Their destination is New Orleans . I just happened to catch site of them August 11 on my evening walk with my camera. I have more pictures posted on my website if anyone wants to check it out closer, it is
www.rebeccacatephoto.com

RiverBill says... They made it to the St. Louis area in the fall of 2008.  The HMR C. Bernadette Able wintered at North Shore Marina harbor and Capt'n Robert Cope took possession of her in the spring of 2009.

Mississippi River Shipping

    Low Water Affecting Commerce........

The U.S. Coast Guard estimates that annually, between $50 and $60 billion in commerce is pushed up and down the banks of the Mississippi River. Barges move a wide variety of items, from coal and grain, to diesel fuel and high fructose corn syrup.

The drought that is gripping the country is causing low water conditions along the Mississippi River, which means that some of these barges run aground.

The Coast Guard has issued some advisories to the barge shipping industry, requiring shippers to draw less water with each barge. To do this, shippers must reduce the barge loads by 25%. Also, the size of the tows has been reduced, from 40 barges per tow to 30........

Missouri Department of Consevation

Applications open Sept. 1 for waterfowl hunting reservations

JEFFERSON CITY- Missourians who want to hunt ducks or geese on wetland areas managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) can start applying for reservations Sept. 1.

This year’s historic drought may influence the availability of hunting spots. Hunters have from Sept. 1 through 18 to apply for waterfowl hunting reservations at Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) managed wetland areas. You can apply for reservations at http://mdc.mo.gov/node/3806. Drawing results will be available Oct. 1.

Those who want to hunt at the three areas under the Quick Draw reservation system will enter the drawing closer to their hunt dates. All applications will be handled exclusively online.

Drawings for Eagle Bluffs, Grand Pass and Otter Slough conservation areas will be handled under the Quick Draw system again this year. For those three areas, a drawing on Monday of each week will assign hunting slots for the following Friday through Monday. A Quick Draw each Thursday will assign slots for the following Tuesday through Thursday. Quick Draw applications will open approximately a week before the North-Zone opener.

This year’s historic drought may influence the availability of hunting spots at MDC-managed wetland areas. Whether applying through the traditional reservation system or Quick Draw, applicants need the nine-digit identification number found at the top of their hunting or fishing permit. The number also is next to the bar code on Conservation Heritage Cards.

To apply for reservations under Quick Draw, hunters over age 15 and under age 65 need a small-game hunting and a migratory bird permit. Hunters under age 16 only need a Conservation Identification Number.

Disabled hunters may apply for ADA blinds through Quick Draw. For non-Quick Draw areas, hunters may apply by calling the area office on or after Oct. 1. Hunters wishing to use an ADA blind must submit a hunter method exemption form. These are available at mdc.mo.gov/node/9631 or by calling any MDC Regional Office.

Neither Quick Draw nor the traditional system allows nonresidents to apply for reservations. However, resident hunters who draw reservations can include nonresidents in their hunting parties. Nonresidents also can take part in the daily, on-site “poor-line” drawings under both systems.

Unclaimed reservations under both the Quick Draw and traditional draw system are added to those available in the “poor line,” where hunters without reservations can draw for a chance to hunt.

Bill,

For the last three years my wife and I have been trying to take our vacation on the river, but the river never would cooperate. We wanted to see how far we could make it up river and back in a week just taking our time. So a week ago Sunday we left the Alton Marina on The Busted Flush and headed north. We made it to Keokuk Iowa and stayed at the Keokuk Yacht Club (KYC). The first picture is of the lock and Dam at Keokuk Iowa with a 38’ rise. The second picture was taken at the KYC of the sunrise. You know what they say about “red sky in the morning” well it is true we had storms the entire day and spent an extra day at the KYC. The best part of the trip was how many new friends we made along the way. You meet the best people on the river!!!!

  Metro East Levees

Corps Criticized By Flood Prevention District........

It seems that the battle between Metro East officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concerning the reconstruction of the outmoded levees protecting the American Bottoms may be heating up.

Les Sterman, chief supervisor of construction for the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District, advised the district's board of directors that perhaps legal options should be explored in response to the deadlock between the Corps and the district over the design of the improvements.

Sterman added that the district's plans would bring the levees up to 100 year flood protection standards, but the Corps states that the plans would leave the levees vulnerable to a 500 year flood event........

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

    News Release

Boaters Use a Checklist Before Getting Underway

WASHINGTON- Keeping track of appointments or events has become more complex in a very over scheduled world. A list of reminders added to the calendar on the refrigerator or in the smartphone can help make sure nothing is forgotten. When it comes to leisure time a checklist is still valuable especially when heading out onto the water.

Create a pre-underway checklist like the Coast Guard Auxiliary has for their boat crews. Each time before an Auxiliary boat leaves the dock the entire crew reviews a standardized checklist together. Once all the items on the list are checked off it is time to get underway.

It does not have to be complicated; this is just an example of a pre-underway checklist you could use:

  • Driver's license

  • Current registration papers and boating safety course completion card

  • Check fuel supply and oil level

  • Working proper navigation lights for night operations

  • Enough lifejackets, the right size for all

  • Marine radio

  • GPS

  • Float plan left in your vehicle or with a friend

  • Other emergency equipment such as flares, first aid kit, signaling devices and tools

If something does not add up it is OK not to get underway. It is always better to choose safety than take a risk with your life or the lives of your passengers.

River History....

16 August 2005 in River History

The International Game Fish Association approved the 124 pound blue catfish caught in mid May just below Lock and Dam 26 by Tim Pruitt of Alton, Ill.

The IGFA certified Pruitt's catfish for two new records; an all-tackle world record for the heaviest species caught and a freshwater 50 pound line class.

Mississippi River Shipping

     Low Water Causing Trouble........

Since the level of the Mississippi River is down, problems have developed for barges plying the water, they are having to lighten their loads.

Mike Fletcher, owner of a barge company stated that he is making about $20,000 less per day as compared to last year.  He added that the low water levels are requiring a decrease in cargo of 30 to 40%.  This is leading to increases in shipping costs.

Increases in shipping costs for products moved by barge will mean a corresponding increase in prices at the store........

MDC offers bright side for drought-lowered fishing ponds

KANSAS CITY, Mo -- There are some upsides to this summer’s withering heat and drought conditions that have lowered pond and lake levels. In ponds with deep enough water for fish to survive, the big fish are eating well. For pond owners, low water offers a good time to make improvements in ponds that can help in future drought.

Some ponds receive too little fishing pressure, said Scott Ryan, MDC Fisheries regional supervisor for Northwest Missouri. That can lead to stunted growth in bass and bluegill. Plus, vegetative growth can get heavy near pond banks and keep prey fish hidden.

But when water levels drop below vegetative lines, prey fish are forced into deeper water with the predators like largemouth bass.

“This allows the stunted largemouth bass the opportunity to grow significantly with the newly available food source,” Ryan said, “and by thinning the number of bluegill, the surviving bluegill have more food so they too will tend to grow to a larger size.”

The setback for vegetation can also provide a few years with less growth and improved fishing conditions for anglers.... click here to go to mdconline and continue reading

American Queen to Sail North from Memphis

The Mississippi River's low water levels are causing the tourism industry problems. The American Queen docked in Memphis, Tennessee last Wednesday because of low water levels on the rivers.  The riverboat could not take the passengers to their destinations because of the low water so they had to take charter buses.

The US Coast Guard and the captain of the American Queen decided it was best to remain in Memphis instead of traveling south. The Mississippi River has been shit down between Vicksburg and Greenville three times in the last two days.

The American Queen is slated to head north to Chattanooga.

Meramec River

National 'drowning expert' to help investigate death of 12- year-old boy

Andrea Zaferes, a nationally recognized drowning expert, is helping St. Louis County police look into the drowning of a 12 year old boy

St. Louis County Police turned to an expert because they wondered if it was possible for Marks to have floated down river as far as he apparently did with the low water levels on the Meramec.

After an investigation, Andrea said it was possible that it happened like it appeared to have happened.

Police are also investigating reports that the drowning victim was drinking beer before drowning.

Ethanol Damage Increases with Drought

According to a news article in Trade Only today some boat dealers in the drought stricken areas of the US are seeing an increase of ethanol damage in boats.

The reason seems to be that boats are setting longer, giving the alcohol time to cause more damage.  the article suggests using an ethanol treatment all summer long, rather than just during winterization.....

  On Hold For Some Repairs

When we left Florence Harbor Marina on Friday the sky was overcast and stayed that way for the whole trip down to the entrance to the Tenn-Tom at mile 215. I had never entered a waypoint into our GPS and set a course for it, but I got out the directions and were able to follow them. The chart plotter took us right to our destination with no hiccups. I feel less concerned about making a crossing in the Gulf knowing that our GPS is accurate. It's nice when things work.
What doesn't work is the display on the chart plotter. Put this way; the display on the GPS unit is small and it works fine. The chart plotter unit sends a display to the radar screen. This is the display that is not working. I get a picture similar to how the old T.V.s used to do when the horizontal hold was messed up. We are less concerned because although the radar works just fine, the chart plotter is ancient and we don't have chips for it other than Lake Michigan. I think we'll remove the pad for the chart plotter and put a small Garmin unit in its place. Then between it, our GPS, along with the iPad and iPhone navigation apps, we may be able to find where we want to go.
My last call to Aqua Yacht was over a week ago and Tony, the shop manager, and I made a tentative plan to get the prop(s) repaired on Swing Set from our run in with the tree stumps on the Tellico River a few weeks ago. Our plan involved getting some paint on our spare props to prevent barnacle growth when we get to the salt water, so this is something that has to be done before we swap them out. Aqua Yacht knew we were coming and Tom, the service manager, was not surprised to see us when he got back from lunch and we were relaxing in their nicely equipped ships store.
Tom and I confirmed the plan that Tony and I had made and set a course to have Swing Set hauled out first thing Monday morning. We brought the spares up from the boat and left them to be painted that afternoon. There was one potential snag, and it was a vessel being hauled that afternoon for a fuel tank leak, which might affect our boat getting hauled, but I was to call Tom the next day to confirm the Monday haul out.
Rosie and I brought Swing Set over to Zippy Cove, a nice anchorage we stayed in when we passed through here around the first part of July. We ate a snack and just relaxed after getting up early for our last trip down the Tennessee River that morning. Later, when we were eating the remnants from our dinner at the Joe Wheeler Lodge, and our left over chicken from Champy's, a boat came unusually close by and then anchored in the back of Zippy, but left later before sunset. We found out later that the owner of the boat follows the blog and sent an email asking if we needed to go to the store, offering to drive us. Since we got everything we needed in Florence, we declined the offer. We thought we'd see Marty again some time over the weekend but we didn't. People have been so nice that way.
The weather has just been perfect. The nights have been nice and cool and temperatures during the day have been below 90, so we haven't had to run the air conditioner for a few days.

Delaware River

   Rabid Beaver Attacks Swimmer

According to a news article in stltoday.com.... A rabid beaver attacked A Boy Scout leader from New York, who was swimming in the Delaware River in Pennsylvania on August 2nd..

The swimmer was bitten in the leg, buttocks, arm, hand and torso before managing to grab the animal and hold it's jaw shut.

One Boy Scout pulled the swimmer to shore and the scouts killed the animal with rocks.  Doctors confirmed that the animal had rabies the following day.

The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Jessica of Palisades Yacht Club

RiverBill:

Hi! I hope you were able to enjoy the weekend on the river! We had beautiful weather! We had a GREAT time! The pictures attached are of my great friend, Lisa who is getting married in 2 weeks! We had a "BachelorWench" party instead of the traditional Bachelorette party! We spent Saturday on the Gypsy Rose with Wench Martha and Captain Tim. 10 of us wenches went wild before Lisa has to surrender the booty! We rocked the pirate ship!

Bride Lisa is the First Mate of the boat "Never Again" from the Yacht Club of St. Louis! We want everyone to wish her and her Captain, Matt smooth sailing for many years to come! :)
