Here's an email and pictures Rich Luttrell sent me. I think Captain
Carl also got some pictures of it at Woodland Marina.
Darryll

"Darryll, thought these might be good shots for River Bills. Capt. Tim
received the latest hull today for his next creation, but he is having
second thoughts on disturbing it's historic appeal. No it's not the
biggest center console in the world! It is the Naval transport vessel
John F.Kennedy. What do you think? Pirate ship or restore her to her
Naval glory? Canon balls or 50 cals.?"

Woman Found Guilty In Boating Accident.........

On Thursday, Carol O'Connell was found guilty in a fatal boating collision along the Mississippi River. She was found guilty of careless operation of a watercraft and fined over $200 during a bench trial. She had waived her right to a trial by jury. THe charges stemmed from an incident in August 2011, where John Flaiz was killed, when the vessel he was aboard was struck from behind by the boat operated by O'Connell. Flaiz's boat sank, and his body was not recovered........

  Asian Carp Update

     Carp Search Comes Up Empty........

Water samples taken from Lake Erie last year contained DNA from Asian carp, however, during a recent search of the western portion of Lake Erie, no carp were found. Natural resources departments form Ohio and Michigan undertook this task following last month's announcement that Asian carp DNA had been found. This was the first time Asian carp DNA had been found in Lake Erie, even though three bighead carp were found in the lake between 1995 and 2000........

Missouri State Highway Patrol News Release

Results of Boating While Intoxicated Saturation Conducted in Troop C

Captain Ronald S. Johnson, commanding officer of Troop C, Weldon Spring, announces the results of a boating while intoxicated saturation conducted on August 5, 2012, on the Mississippi River in Pike County. During the eight-hour project, four troopers focused their enforcement activities on impaired boat operators, hazardous boat operation, and other hazardous boating violations that contribute to boating crashes.

During the eight-hour project, 24 vessels were stopped. A total of four summonses and 30 warnings were issued. Of those summonses, one person was arrested for boating while intoxicated, one person was cited for a non-moving violation, one person was cited for a hazardous moving violation, and one person was cited for a marine violation. In addition, troopers conducted 10 marine inspections during the operation.

“The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to ensure that Missouri’s waterways are safe and enjoyable to the public. Remember to wear your life jacket and do not operate a vessel while intoxicated.” stated Captain Johnson

Host a Cleanup in Your Area With the Help of BoatUS Foundation

New Guide to Waterway Cleanups for Boating Business and Boaters

ANNAPOLIS, Md. August 9, 2012 — Clean waterways are essential to safe and fun boating. Whether you are a boater, a marina owner, a towboat captain or other waterfront business owner, helping to keep our waterways clean is in everyone’s best interest. Each year hundreds of thousands of individuals help by participating in beach and waterway cleanups around the world, collecting millions of pounds of trash and debris. Boaters and marine-based businesses are especially well equipped to help in this effort. With waterfront access and boats, we can easily get to locations that can be otherwise difficult to reach. Thanks to the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, conducting your own cleanup event is now a lot easier.

“A cleanup event is a great way to help your business show its commitment to the local community and reach out to new customers.” said BoatUS Foundation Outreach Manager Alanna Keating. “The Foundation's new Guide to Waterway Cleanups covers everything you should do before, during and after your cleanup event including information on recruiting volunteers, promoting your event, getting donations and even educational materials on the hazards of marine debris. The guide also provides tips on working with the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), held each year on the third Saturday in September.”

If you are interested in conducting a cleanup event in your area, visit BoatUS.com/Foundation/Cleanup to download the guide and start planning your event.

Not ready to dive into planning your own cleanup event? Why not participate with an established event in your area? Your special skills, access to boats and understanding of local waterways could be invaluable to other groups in expanding their efforts during a cleanup event. Contact the ICC to participate in an established event by visiting signuptocleanup.org.

What a FUN weekend! Fleet Captain Alan and First Mate Julie put together another great party. It started Friday afternoon after Alton Marina Manager Karen Brncic, harbormaster Jeremy Fowler and the rest of their wonderful staff got the early birds checked in and docked. Some partied on the dock, some ventured around Alton, all had a great time.

Saturday was mostly pool party time due to the heat while Bill (Past Commodore 1989) and Linda Mixon cooked up some great food. Dinner was served about 5 PM and then we were treated to the tunes of the Ralph Butler Band. Seems after the band wrapped most of our group continued on the dock.

Many Thanks to Karen and her staff for the wonderful hospitality and help they always provide.

Asian Carp Update

    Tastes Great, But Many Bones........

Those who are daring enough to try Asian carp say the freshwater fish has a flavor reminiscent of cod or tilapia. A portion of the carp's bad image comes from it's name. It has been confused with the bottom feeding common carp, which has a muddy taste. The Asian carp feeds on plankton and algae. The Asian carp's other issue is that it is very bony, however, once it is cooked, the bones are easily removed........

Powerton Lake Near Pekin, Illinois

Power Plant Not Shut Down By Dead Fish........

Back in early July, it was reported that the Powerton electric plant near Pekin, Illinois was shut down after an influx of dead fish clogged water intake screens that extracts the fish. In reality, this is not the case. On July 10, one of the facility's two power generators was placed off-line due to high water temperatures overheating bearings, and affecting the efficiency of the turbines. Lake water is used to cool the heat exchangers at the coal fired plant........

On a related note, Lincoln Beach at Cuivre River State Park has re-opened as of Wednesday........

Wilson Lock and Florence Harbor Marina

We didn't get any more visitors in our little cove last night, so the water was calm and quiet and we got a good nights sleep. We got up early and had a quick breakfast with plans to weigh anchor by 8 A.M.

While Rosie was straightening up the galley from breakfast, I took Holly outside for a picture of her new haircut. It took five tries before she would face the camera. The key word here was "treat". Gets her to perk her ears up every time.
As soon as I got out of the cove we were in, I called the lock and was told that the chamber was full and we should come on down.

Missouri River Levels

     Missouri River Level Predictions Lowered........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reduced their predictions of how much water will flow down the Missouri River this year. The Corps is predicting 21 million acre-feet of runoff for the Missouri River, which is about 85% of normal. Last year saw record runoff, with 61.2 million acre-feet of water, which caused flooding. Water is having to be released from reservoirs to aid with power generation and navigation........

Mississippi River Commission hosts public hearing at the
     Melvin Price Locks and Dam

ST. LOUIS - The Mississippi River Commission will host a public hearing August 17 at Melvin Price Locks and Dam, #2 Lock and Dam Way, Alton, Ill., aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI.

Part of their annual low-water inspection trip, the commission holds public hearings to continue a dialogue and exchange viewpoints and ideas with stakeholders and the public.

The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The public hearing process is unique to the Mississippi River Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It allows the public a greater voice in shaping federal management policy of the river. During the inspection trip, commission members welcome the comments, ideas and issues of residents along the Mississippi River.

This process gives commissioners invaluable insight into local and regional concerns. Additionally, the interaction with the public, congressional, federal and state interests, local boards and non-government organizations is crucial to the decision-making process of the MRC.

All hearings are open to the public. Local interests are invited to present their views and concerns on matters affecting the water resources infrastructure needs in the Mississippi Valley, including flood control and the Mississippi River and Tributaries project, environmental issues, recreation and navigation.

During the public hearing process, presentations by the public are made orally. A copy of the remarks will be presented to the commission for the official record. The public can register for the August 17 hearing online at www.mvs.usace.army.mil/MRCregistration.

Public hearing locations, dates and times are as follows:
  * August 17 9:00 a.m. Alton, Ill., at Melvin Price Locks and Dam
  * August 20 9:00 a.m. Caruthersville, Mo., at City Front
  * August 21 9:00 a.m. Memphis, Tenn., at Mud Island River Park
  * August 22 9:00 a.m. Greenville, Miss., at the City Front
  * August 24 9:00 a.m. Houma, La., at Cenac Towing Dock

The agenda for the August 17 public hearing is as follows:

1. Summary report by Maj. Gen. John W. Peabody, President of the Commission, on national and regional issues affecting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Commission programs and projects in the Mississippi River Basin.
2. St. Louis District presentation by District Commander Col. Christopher G. Hall.
3. Presentations to the Commission by local organizations and members of the public giving views or comments on any issue affecting the programs or projects of the Commission and the Corps of Engineers.
The MRC, established in 1879, is composed of seven members, each nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. Three of the organization's members are officers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; one member is from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and three members are civilians, two of whom are civil engineers.
General duties of the Mississippi River Commission include making recommendations on policy and work programs, studying and reporting on whether modifications or additions are needed for flood control and navigation projects, providing recommendations on any matters authorized by law, and making semi-annual inspection trips.
The jurisdiction of the commission includes the entire length of the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minn., to Head of Passes, La., where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

Joe Wheeler Reservoir to Wilson Lake

We had a long day yesterday, starting out at 8 A.M. and traveling the whole length of the Joe Wheeler Reservoir. In our opinion, it's the least scenic of all the lakes along the Tennessee River. There is lots of industry, meaning smokestacks and power lines galore.
One interesting thing was that we hadn't seen any towboats traversing the river for days or weeks, but when we came up on the stern of one of them yesterday, it was the first time we had done that in over a month for sure. I called them on the VHF and told the captain how fast we were going and if we could pass him, if so, on which side? He said it didn't matter to him, that we could pick one. He was making a wide left turn on a bend, so we took the "two whistle" and passed him on his port side. We just got to his bow and here come another tow upriver, so we had to bump up our speed to get over and out of their way. First time we did that in three months. The captain of the upbound tow stepped out of his pilot house with a pair of binoculars and waved as we went by. Must be lonely out here on the river.
When we got to Decatur, Alabama, we called the railroad lift bridge there and asked for passage. The lift bridge operator said the call for us had already come in. It seems that the tow boat we had passed was nice enough to call the bridge and tell him that we were about four miles ahead of him and we'd get there before he did. We didn't even break stride and the bridge began to lift. It's amazing what a bikini on the flybridge can do. Maybe we'll both start wearing them.
General Joe Wheeler State Park and Lodge is just a few miles from the dam and that's where we found ourselves by 5 P.M. We parked at the transient slips and after some nice hot showers we went up to the restaurant for dinner.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL
    News Release

Announcement Of Boating While Intoxicated Saturations

Captain Duane L. Robinson, commanding officer of Troop H in St. Joseph, announces that sometime during the month of September, two boating while intoxicated saturations will be held in Troop H. The Missouri State Highway Patrol will conduct the saturations. A total of two troopers will be assigned to each of the eight-hour operations.
The focus of these projects is to detect impaired boaters and watch for hazardous boating operations that contribute to boating crashes.
Captain Duane L. Robinson stated, “Operating a vessel while intoxicated puts everyone on the water at risk. One bad decision can ruin a lifetime of memories, please stay sober while on the water."

Bill:

Met a nice young couple, Tom and Nancy Caruso, on the dock here at Alton Marina that are running the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition starting in Pittsburgh PA. They had purchased the center console off of Ebay in Virginia, then trailered it to Pittsburgh to begin the voyage. They are here till Tuesday, had to get some parts for the motor as it was overheating, then they will continue up the Missouri. Nancy's father had made this trip back in '73 when he was 65 years old in a 16' runabout!

Here is a link to the website detailing their trip and mission.

    CDC Watching Missouri For Parasites........

It seems that in Missouri, more people are getting drunk and eating raw crayfish than in the other 49 states combined. This situation has the U.S. Center for Disease Control concerned. When raw crayfish are consumed, the parasites contained within the crayfish move into a person's intestines, and from there into their lungs or brain, causing sickness. Cooking crayfish kills the parasites........

Guntersville Lake

We left our anchorage behind Burns Island on the upper end of Guntersville Lake with intentions of traveling about half of the 75 miles to Honeycomb Creek, where we wanted to be late Friday afternoon, or Saturday morning to meet up with David and Jeanie, the couple we met at The Docks at Goose Pond Marina on the way up.
Let me tell you that the trip down the lake yesterday was one of the most pleasant we’ve had in a few days. There was a pleasant breeze blowing on our bow all day that made for cooler temperatures on the flybridge. There are few homes on this stretch of the Tennessee River and we found it refreshing. The mountains are tall alongside the lake and in spite of more industry than we’ve seen lately, we both thought it was a scenic trip.
It was a good thing there was a breeze, as it was still hot. We stopped a couple of times along the way and took a dip behind the boat, just shutting down the engines long enough to get wet and get out. We’re running low on sandwich bread but had enough to make sandwiches for lunch one last time, but we can always resort to a hearty cup of soup in our stainless mugs for lunch as we cruise. We did that a couple of days ago and we liked the change. It was mid afternoon when we decided to go ahead and cruise all the way to Guntersville in one day. It would make for a long day, but it would give us a whole free day near the town to sight see a little and maybe pick up some things we needed for the weekend, namely beer.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources

    News Release

IDNR Recommends Caution at Fishing Tournaments Due to Hot Weather

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is recommending fishing tournament organizers implement additional precautions regarding the catch and handling of fish during upcoming tournaments on Illinois lakes and waterways due to continued hot weather and drought-related water conditions.

“We thank organizers and anglers involved in bass fishing tournaments here in Illinois this summer for considering reducing the number of tournaments and taking extra care at the tournaments that are held to reduce the stress and mortality of bass brought to weigh in,” said Debbie Bruce, chief of the IDNR Division of Fisheries. “Every effort should be made to ensure the survival of fish caught in tournaments since survival of those fish is important to maintaining the quality of bass fishing in Illinois.”

Research has demonstrated that the water quality conditions in even the best boat live-wells can reach near-lethal or lethal conditions during the heat of summer. Although most research indicates that survival of bass caught in fishing tournaments is usually good, the mortality of bass brought to tournament weigh-ins is highest during the heat of the summer. With Illinois’ record-setting heat this summer, lethal conditions for tournament-caught fish can develop rapidly....

Midwest Fish Kills

Midwest Waterways Heat Up, Kill Fish........

As water temperatures are skyrocketing and waterways are drying up across the Midwest, thousands of fish are dying. In Iowa, approximately 40,000 shovelnose sturgeon died as water temps hit 97 degrees. Fishery officials in Nebraska stated that they have seen thousands of dead carp, catfish and even the endangered pallid sturgeon in the Lower Platte River. The fish kills are happening amid one of the driest and hottest summers on record........

Mark Twain Lake

    Boater Safety Contest........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers put up a new water safety message at Mark Twain Lake. It is the "Wear It" emblem used across the country by the National Safe Boating Council to encourage recreational boaters to use life jackets. The Corps is urging boaters to look for the sign on Mark Twain Lake, and note it's location. Those who spot the sign can drop by the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center to report it's location. The first 500 people to report the signs location will receive a water bottle........

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Dock Wiring Under Scrutiny........

Three electrocution deaths in July, and several close calls at the Lake of the Ozarks have brought an increase in scrutiny of the electrical wiring on boat docks. Much of the wiring was installed by non-professionals decades ago. Now, electricians are in high demand as property owners are looking to see if their docks are safe. Recently, Amren Missouri sent out over 20,000 letters to property owners reminding them that it is their responsibility to see to dock safety........

August 11, 2012... Creve Coeur Lake

6th Annual Gateway Dragon Boat Festival

A dragon boat is a long, narrow canoe-style boat that is used in the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing, a tradition which originated in China over two thousand years ago. Dragon boat races are held as part of the annual Duanwu Festival in China, and the tradition has emerged in the past several decades as an international sport. Dragon boats are so-called because they are typically rigged at their ends with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails.

Bill,

We had a great weekend out on the sandbar. Although it was hot, Sunday provided us with some nice cloud shade. We saw pirate boats and the island was packed with all kinds of people out enjoying the river. Near the end of the day the clouds really cleared up and left us with a great sunset. Just as we were leaving "Abby Normal" pulled up for a quick rest.

News Release From BoatUS

Video: Three Questions to Ask Your Boat Insurance Agent

Dear Friends:

It’s the middle of the summer, and so far, most of us have stayed safe and enjoyed our time on the water. However, the BoatUS Insurance claims files tell us that there’s still plenty of time for our luck to run out.

I just hope you bought the right policy. Your first “bad day” on the water is not the time to find out just how good – or lousy – your boat insurance is. Let me show you in just three minutes how you can tell if you have a good boat insurance policy. Check out my short video, “Three Questions to Ask Your Insurance Agent,” at:

BoatUS.com/threequestions

I also hope you enjoy the flag coming out of the top my head J

Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois

Cargo Totals Should Be Fairly Normal........

Even though the rivers are down due to the drought, the Peoria area port district is anticipating fairly normal cargo totals for 2012.  Typically, the Heart of Illinois Regional Port moves up to 30 million tons of barge freight per year.  It is estimated that around 28 million tons of barge freight will pass through the district during 2012.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging and marking a channel that they will try to keep as close to 9 feet as possible........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

August 4 is the US Coast Guard’s 222nd birthday

August 4 is celebrated each year as Coast Guard Day, to honor the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service, which evolved into today's Coast Guard.

On August 4, 1790, at the urging of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Congress authorized the building of a fleet of ten cutters, whose responsibility would be the enforcement of the first tariff laws enacted by Congress under the Constitution.

The Coast Guard has been continuously at sea since its inception, although the name Coast Guard didn't come about until 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service was merged with the Lifesaving Service. The Lighthouse Service joined the Coast Guard in 1939, followed in 1946 by the Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat Inspection. In 1967, after 177 years in the Treasury Department, the Coast Guard was transferred to the newly formed Department of Transportation. Finally, after 9/11 they were incorporated into the Department of Homeland Security.

While Coast Guard Day is primarily an internal activity for active duty Coast Guard personnel, civilian members, reservists, retirees, auxiliarists, and dependents, it does generate a significant share of interest outside the Service. Grand Haven, Michigan, also known as Coast Guard City, USA, annually sponsors the Coast Guard Festival around August 4. Typically it is the largest community celebration of a branch of the Armed Forces in the nation.

Today, the Coast Guard is the smallest of America’s Armed Forces, with fewer active duty Guardians than officers in the New York City Police Department, yet they are charged with military roles including combat, border security, drug and migrant interdiction, port security, marine safety, law enforcement, environmental protection, search and rescue, aids to navigation, homeland security and more! Their ranks are bolstered by reservists and by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – uniformed civilian volunteers who donate their time and resources supporting all missions of the Coast Guard except combat and direct law enforcement.

The motto of the US Coast Guard is “Semper Paratus”; Always Ready.

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary would like to wish a hearty “Happy Birthday” to its parent organization.

Missouri State Highway Patrol

    NEWS RELEASE

Results of Boating While Intoxicated Saturation Conducted in Troop C

Captain Ronald S. Johnson, commanding officer of Troop C, Weldon Spring, is pleased to announce the results of a boating while intoxicated saturation conducted on July 24, 2012, on the Meramec River in St. Louis County. During the eight-hour project, four troopers focused their enforcement activities on impaired boat operators, hazardous boat operation, and other hazardous boating violations that contribute to boating crashes.

As a result of the enforcement program, a total of 18 summonses and 25 warnings were issued. Of those summonses, one person was arrested for boating while intoxicated, two people were cited for non-moving violations, four people were cited for marine violations, and four people were cited for other misdemeanor violations. In addition, six people were arrested for misdemeanor drug violations and one person was arrested for a felony drug violation. Troopers also conducted eight marine inspections during the operation. During the eight-hour project, 29 vessels were stopped.

Captain Johnson stated, "Always make sure each boat passenger has a life jacket available, and never operate any type of watercraft after consuming alcohol. Boating is a fun recreational activity, but safety must be a priority"
