    Dock Inspections Are Being Considered........

Following the recent electrocutions of three swimmers near docks at the Lake of the Ozarks, the Lake St. Louis Community Association is considering requiring regular dock inspections. At Lake St. Louis, the docks have to meet the Association's architectural requirements, however, there are no electrical permits issued. The Association is working with the city to look at dock guidelines that could be in place by next spring........

Results Of Niangua River Saturation & Table Rock Lake Sobriety Checkpoint

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, Springfield, announces the results of an enforcement saturation and a vessel sobriety checkpoint conducted on July 28, 2012, on the Niangua River, in Dallas and Laclede Counties, and on Table Rock Lake, in Stone County. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, along with officers of the Missouri Department of Conservation, made the following enforcement contacts during these efforts:

4--boating while intoxicated arrests
5--felony drug arrests
13--misdemeanor drug violations
15--minor in possession violations
1--supplying alcohol to a minor violation
8--non-moving summonses
80--warnings

"The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to ensure that Missouri's waterways are safe and enjoyable to the public. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience. If emergency assistance is needed, the Missouri State Highway Patrol can be contacted by dialing *55 on your cellular phone," stated Captain Villanueva

Cliff Jumping Ill-Advised, Especially With Drought........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has stated that cliff jumping is dangerous, especially now that the Midwest is suffering from extended drought conditions. On Saturday afternoon, a 28 year old man jumped into the Huzzah Creek from an eight foot mud bank, landing on his head in about a foot of water. Another incident occurred at about the same time Saturday, on the nearby Meramec River. The Crawford County Sherriff's Department recommends against cliff jumping, but if you do, they suggest checking water levels first........

Missouri River Reservoirs

    Upstream Reservoirs Boost Missouri River........

As the severe drought continues across the Midwest, the reservoirs along the upper Missouri River that were blamed for last year's massive flooding are releasing water into the River. Already, this year's supply of rain and snowpack have been depleted. On Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began tapping the reservoirs. The Corps has plenty of water stored in the reservoirs. Jody Farhat, Missouri River water management chief for the Corps stated that the reservoirs hold enough water to survive a 12 year Dust Bowl scenario........

    7th Annual Missouri River 340........

The Missouri 340 is an endurance race across the state of Missouri. Competitors will start in Kansas City and finish, some of them anyway, in St. Charles. With numerous towns and hamlets, the course offers plenty of opportunity for resupply while enroute. The Missouri River is also incredibly scenic and isolated in some stretches, with wildlife and beautiful vistas to rival any river in North America. But if you’re trying to win this race, you won’t have time to enjoy any of it.

Participants are allowed exactly 88 hours to complete the course. There are nine checkpoints along the route where paddlers are required to sign in and sign out. Cutoff times will be associated with these checkpoints based on the 88 hour pace. Failure to miss two consecutive deadlines is grounds for disqualification. To finish this race in 88 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year.

One Last Party at Fort Loudon Lake

Friends we met at Kentucky Lake back in May came to Fort Loudon Lake over the weekend. Steve and Dina met us out on Steve's brothers boat in a place on the lake called Prater Flat. It's their party cove area and on Saturday it was full of boats. I don't have a picture of it, but picture some water with a bunch of boats anchored on it. Some other boats tied up with us as the afternoon wore on and we had lots of fun and I won't go into it here.
This morning we had to use our jumper cables to get one of the boats tied next to us started as the fella who owned it left his fridge on all night and killed his battery. Steve and Dina had a five hour drive ahead of them, so they pulled out early and we were right behind them. We were just a little under the weather and we didn't want to stay for the day, but plenty of people from the day before had wanted us to. Wasn't gonna happen.
We drove down the lake to the Fort Loudon Marina and got fuel for the first time in 19 days. It was a deal at 3.59 per gallon. The fuel dock manager, Brett King told us that they like to keep their fuel prices low so people can afford to be out on the water. I wish everyone felt that way. We also learned that staying over night in a transient slip is only $30, that's with electricity too. We were tempted to stay just to enjoy a full day in the air conditioning, but we were itching to get down the river. Brett also offered us use of their courtesy car if we wanted to get some provisions, even if we weren't staying. The nearly $600 we spent on fuel helped, but offers like that aren't made every day. We didn't take him up on the offer, but we cannot say enough nice things about our short visit at the Fort Loudon Marina. We got fuel and water and called the lock and was told to come on down, the lock master would have the gates open for us in about five minutes. The Fort Loudon Marina is within sight of the Lock and Dam.

Asian Carp Update

    Simple Solution To Carp Problem........

Scientists and anglers are taking a simplistic approach to the Asian carp problem, catch 'em and eat 'em. There are some marketing and pragmatic issues to overcome, however. Commercial fishermen can catch the fish, but enough of the carp population must remain for the endeavor to remain economically viable. The U.S. is one of the few nations that does not eat carp, as they are believed to be bottom feeders, and thus not very tasty.........

It Appears Friday Was Boat Club's Last Day........

It seems that Friday was the last day of business at Quincy's South Side Boat Club. Last week, the club's financial secretary Ronald Kooken stated that the club was approaching the end of their financial reserves. The club has seen a decline in membership, which translates into a decline in business. Club board members were to discuss the future of the club at a meeting on Friday........

Last Weekend's New Town Triathlon Update

Hi Bill-

Just wanted to update you on the triathlon at New Town. Your help notifying marinas/boaters is much appreciated.

The event went off extremely well with only one incident on the bike course to really speak of. No one was hurt but we did have someone throwing thumb tacks along the route. Which caused several flats and some frustrated participants.

Hopefully the marinas/boaters were not effected too much since all of the cyclists were back within New Town by 9:45 am. It seems traffic headed to the marinas starts to pick up around 10:00-10:30 am.

Please let us know what else we can do from your perspective to inform folks of the race. Next year it will be on Sunday, July 14.

Thanks for your help, Bill.

Low Mississippi River Giving Up Large Catfish........

With the Mississippi River at low summer stages this year, anglers are having more success reeling in catfish weighing up to 110 pounds. Fishermen are now able to anchor their boats in areas where the water had previously been moving too swiftly. Anglers are catching catfish primarily in the 30 pound range, with a few 40 and 50 pounders in the mix. The Mississippi River near Memphis is slated to rise a little over the next few days, so the catfish should be staying in the area for now........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Fort Loudon Lake

I didn't find out until last night, but had we ventured up the French Broad River about four miles, we would have found the Knoxville Sea Ray plant. From what I understand, it's the plant that made Swing Set. I knew Sea Ray had a plant in Knoxville, but really wasn't looking for it, more importantly, we didn't plan on traveling up either the Holston, or the French, and didn't have charts for them. Navionics doesn't offer much in the way of detail either of these rivers, plus honestly, I am a little gun shy from our encounter with the tree stumps on the upper reaches of the Tellico River. Too late now, we're 40 miles back down the Tennessee River and there is no turning back. I would have liked to show them our office on the boat and see what they thought of it.
I admit that where we had anchored at the junction of the three rivers was a little tight, but I was as far over to the bank as I felt we could safely be, given the room we needed to pivot if we had to, and usually the boat changes direction when the sun goes down if the current is not too strong, due to the changes in the air temperatures over the water. I'm no meteorologist, and won't go into the explanation, but if you are hanging on one hook, give yourself enough room to swing around the anchor because it will happen.
I thought we had given plenty of room for other boats to pass us in the small channel, but some local wake boarders thought otherwise. Plowing through the water to produce the biggest wake for surfing behind their boat, they passed us between our boat and the closest bank, not 100 feet away at most. Had we been at home, or not spending the night there, I would have given them a friendly wave with one of my fingers. Better yet, they came back by anyway at 10 P.M., still skiing in the dark with no lights, using the light from a nearby asphalt plant to see. They didn't ruin our night, we thought they were jerks, but they apparently thought we were too. Had I given them reason to, it could have been a long night, but they made that one late night pass to show us who was boss and that was the end of it.
On Wednesday, we lingered around that area until mid-morning and then decided to head back down toward Knoxville and spend the day anchored nearer to the downtown area and then go to a place called Calhoun's right on the water.

US Coast guard News Release

Myrtle Beach rescue illustrates importance of life jackets

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Two people are safe on land after spending more than four hours in the water Thursday night after their 19-foot sailboat capsized near Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A Coast Guard watchstander at Sector Charleston, S.C. was notified of an overturned sailboat three miles off Myrtle Beach about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Weather reports for the area indicate seas were about 4 to 6 feet.

A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Georgetown, S.C., launched to search. Local authorities responded as well.

Rescue crews found the pair with their life jackets on one mile north of Apache Pier in Myrtle Beach Thursday evening more than four hours after they began searching.

"This case is an excellent example of how wearing a life jacket can save your life," said Capt. Michael White, commander of Coast Guard Sector Charleston. "Accidents on the water can happen to anyone, and wearing a life jacket when boating can significantly increase the ability to survive unpredictable accidents."

To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person aboard. Boats 16 feet and longer must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well. More information on U.S. Coast Guard requirements is available HERE.

River Shipping News

    Mighty Mississippi Diminished By Drought........

The severe drought conditions across the Midwest has forced barges along the Mississippi River to reduce the size of their loads due to concerns of running aground. This raises concerns about higher pricing for gasoline, food and other raw commodities shipped by barge. So far, river shippers are voluntarily reducing the sizes of their loads, forcing more trips to move the same amount of cargo........

Fraser River In British Columbia, Canada

1,100 Pound White Sturgeon Caught.... And Released....

Recently, anglers reeled in a 12 foot, 4 inch white sturgeon, weighing an estimated 1,100 pounds in the Fraser River in British Columbia. The Fraser River is well known for white sturgeon, the typical catch weighs between 30 and 100 pounds. It is possible that this is the largest freshwater fish caught with a rod and reel in North America. The fish was released alive, so it was not able to be weighed........

News Release From BoatUS

SPOT Proves Invaluable With Two Recent TowBoatUS Cases Far Out to Sea
"Calling" BoatUS Towing Dozens of Miles from Shore

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla., July 26, 2012 – Twice in the last month, SPOT Assist Maritime service with BoatUS Towing Services has proven invaluable for a couple of offshore anglers with disabled fishing vessels far out in the Gulf of Mexico. SPOT combines satellite messaging communications and GPS technology with the nation’s largest fleet of towboats for recreational boaters. By enrolling in SPOT Assist Maritime andpressing the non-emergency “Help” button on their handheld SPOT Satellite GPS Messengers, each angler was able to summon TowBoatUS assistance and safely return to shore.

In the first case, which occurred in the early hours of July 4th, Capt. Lee Eckler of TowBoatUS Tarpon Springs, FL, received a dispatch from the BoatUS 24-hour call center indicating a mariner was summoning towboat assistance from a location 25 miles offshore of Anclote Key — far beyond cell phone range. With the SPOT and BoatUS partnership, Capt. Eckler was immediately provided with precise GPS coordinates as well as name, contact information, type and color of boat, which was identified as a 17-foot center console. Upon arrival on scene, he found three anglers with a dead engine “loaded for fishing,” said Eckler.

Alone on the water, there were no Good Samaritans for miles around. Incredulously, Eckler learned the trio had broken down long before reaching their desired destination – a fishing spot some 60 miles out in the Gulf. “It was a textbook SPOT dispatch case. We knew exactly were they were, which greatly speeded response times,” said Eckler.

In the second case, an angler requested towboat assistance in the early morning hours of July 12th after his 30-foot power catamaran became disabled approximately 52 miles offshore of Tarpon Springs, FL. As with all SPOT cases, especially when contact via cell phone and VHF cannot be made, BoatUS call center dispatchers also notified the US Coast Guard, which elected to dispatch a helicopter and response boat to verify everyone onboard was safe. Capt. George “Red” Ingram, also of TowBoatUS Tarpon Springs, responded to the disabled vessel and towed it safely back to the owner’s dock by the early afternoon. A broken lower unit was the source of the angler’s troubles.

“When VHF and cell phones were unavailable, the SPOT satellite-based service was able to summon a towboat for non-emergency assistance miles offshore,” said BoatUS Towing Services Vice President Jerry Cardarelli. “That’s a valuable communications tool to add to any boater’s toolbox.”

BoatUS Towing Services offers towing plans for freshwater lakes and rivers for just $34 annually and just $125 for saltwater, plus BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership of $24. SPOT units start at $99.99 plus a $99.99 annual basic SPOT service plan. To add SPOT Assist Maritime to a BoatUS membership, there is a one-time $10 SPOT Link connection fee. SPOT Assist for Maritime is available throughout the continental US as well as coastal British Columbia and select regions of Northern Mexico and the Bahamas.

BoatUS strongly recommends boaters have a properly registered and GPS enabledDSC-VHF radio aboard to be able to hail the closest potential rescuers — fellow boaters and the US Coast Guard — in an emergency. For offshore passages, BoatUS also recommends having an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon).

For more information on SPOT Assist Maritime, visit www.findmespot.com/assist.

EMPHASIS: Extra Caution Encouraged Around Boat Docks

Captain Greg Kindle, commanding officer, Troop F, Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages boat dock owners to take the necessary precautions to make their dock safe from stray electrical current. Recent incidents, including the deaths of two children and a 26-year-old woman, all at Lake of the Ozarks, have brought attention to the dangers of electricity on boat docks. During each of these incidents, there were other potential victims who were able to swim away from the electrically charged docks and surrounding lake water.
In addition to the three fatalities, two other incidents involving electrical shock near private docks have been documented at Lake of the Ozarks recently. A child nearly drowned at Lake of the Ozarks in May, after receiving an electrical shock by grabbing a dock cable charged with electricity. CPR was administered on the child and she was revived. Two adults received an electrical shock while attempting to help the child from the water. In the second incident, which occurred this past weekend, two children and one adult were shocked while swimming around a private dock. The power was shut off to the dock immediately, and all three were able to exit the water.
Tingling and numbness in the extremities while swimming in the water has been a common statement made by individuals who survived these incidents. Swimming away from any dock suspected to be charged with electricity is the safest course of action. Exiting the water at the shoreline, a safe distance from the electrically charged dock, or swimming to a nearby dock, would be the alternative. It should be noted, if there are metal dock cables securing the electrically charged dock to the shoreline, the metal cables may be charged with electricity as well.

There are specific regulations on many of Missouri's lakes. Dock owners should adhere to the regulations set forth by the dock permitting authority.

“Having electricity on a boat dock is a great convenience, but it’s also a great responsibility,” said Captain Kindle. “Prevent tragedy from striking at your boat dock, make sure it’s safe for friends and family to enjoy!”

     Electrocution Webinar Next Week........

On July 31, the American Boat and Yacht Council, and the Association of Marina Industries will be presenting a second free webinar to present safety information on electric shock drowning. The ABYC's previous webinar, "Electric Shock Drowning - The Invisible Killer" looked at shore-to-boat connections, but left many questions unanswered. The second webinar in this series will address safety equipment that cuts power flow to boats when a fault is detected........

News Release From BoatUS

Boaters Need to be Their Own Best Lifeguard

Seven Swimming Safety Tips

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 25, 2012 – Boating and swimming go hand-in-hand, but unlike a public pool or beach, boaters can’t count on a lifeguard to watch over them. As this summer’s sweltering heat wave drives more boaters to dive into the deep blue, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety has these seven swimming tips:

1. Always ensure the engine is off. The best way to do this is to remove the key from the ignition, leaving it in plain view so everyone knows it won’t start.
2. At marinas, stray electric current from poorly maintained boat electrical and shore power systems can kill swimmers. Three separate marina electrocution incidents over the July 4 holiday left four kids and one adult dead, and injured several others who had tried to come to their rescue.
3. Never dive in head first before confirming the water depth. Mistakenly diving into a shallow, mucky bottom may simply leave you bruised and looking more like the creature of black lagoon. However, diving head first into hard sandy bottom, rock or underwater obstruction could put you in a wheelchair. Deploy a boarding ladder first and ease yourself in to confirm water depth.
4. Never swim alone. If you’re in the middle of the lake and swimming alone, there’s no safety backstop in case you have a problem – which could be nearby boaters unaware of you.
5. It’s always a good idea to have a life jacket or floating seat cushion close by (and tied to the boat) that swimmers can easily reach while in the water, or simply hang a dock line over the side. And even if you’re a good swimmer, wearing a life jacket while in the water makes you nearly drown-proof.
6. Never swim under a boat’s swim platform or near any boat with the engine running. You could strike the running gear or fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning – it only takes a few whiffs of CO to leave swimmers incapacitated or unconscious. Also stay away from generator exhaust ports.
7. When boats and swimmers collide, boats always win. You’re simply asking for trouble if you swim in navigation channels or marinas. Also never swim in area with strong river or tidal currents, which can swiftly sweep swimmers away from the boat.

For more information on boating safety programs from the BoatUS Foundation, such as the free Online Boating Safety Course or free Kid’s Life Jacket Loaner Program, go to www.BoatUS.com/Foundation.

To The Tennessee River Headwaters

We had anchored last night at the 619 mile marker, just outside of the RDB channel marker, or just outside of the green buoy on the left hand side of the river going upstream. There are so many homes along the Ft. Loudon Lake, it's hard to find a spot to spend the night on the hook without being in someone's front yard.

Many of the homes on Tellico Lake seem to sit right on top of each other, but on the Fort Loudon Lake, there is a bit more acreage between the homes. This picture is of one of those.

Mississippi River water trail receives national designation

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The St. Louis District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi River water trail which spans from Saverton, Mo., to St. Louis was designated as a National Water Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, July 16.

The designation seeks to increase opportunities for recreation along the river, encourage community stewardship, and promote tourism that fuels local economies.

"Restoring our nation's rivers and expanding outdoor recreational activities on them is one of the major goals of President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Initiative," Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said in an announcement of the water trail designation. "Through a national network of National Water Trails, we are not only connecting people to the outdoors and supporting conservation efforts for our scenic rivers, but also supporting tourism and the recreation economy in nearby communities."

The 121-mile water trail is one of four trails recently designated by the Department of Interior. It provides opportunities for people to reconnect to the river, providing paddlers with rest areas for day use, primitive camping areas, as well as wildlife watching and interpretive opportunities.

"The Mississippi River Water Trail gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy paddling through one of the most scenic stretches of the river in North America, giving paddlers plenty of places to stop and relax along the river," Angie Smith, park ranger with the St. Louis District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

Despite water levels at near-record lows on the Mississippi, paddling on the river during low water should not be a problem.

"Canoes and kayaks have the ability to get around in extremely shallow water, even up to a foot of water," Smith said.

A Summer of Paddling Event will be held on the trail at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Aug. 17-18. The event will give students and the public the opportunity to try paddling, canoeing and kayaking, and learn about the wildlife they might see along the river.

For more information about the events call National Great Rivers Museum at 618-462-6979 or visit www.SOP2012.org

Public Notices Open For Comment

Posted on the US Army Corps Of Engineers Website.....

  1. P-2831: The Corps of Engineers proposes to correct design deficiencies in the underseepage controls of the Prairie du Pont Sanitary and Levee District and Fish Lake Drainage and Levee District systems in St. Clair and Monroe Counties in Illinois. The recommended plan includes: 130 new relief wells; filling 162 existing wood stave relief wells with grout; ditching and pipe collector systems; a 22 cubic foot/second (cfs) seepage pump station; a 13 cfs seepage pump station; a 5 cfs seepage pump station; a 3 cfs pump station; an 8 cfs seepage pump station; approximately 28,500 linear feet of seepage berms; environmental and archeological mitigation work; utility relocations; dredging from the Mississippi River; and easements for berms, relief wells in locations with no existing wells, flowage areas, staging areas, and environmental mitigation areas. Additional construction elements would occur, but are unlikely to be specifically designed until after a contract is awarded. These are anticipated to include dredge pipe placement at approximately levee stations 242+00, 434+00 and 587+00, as well as associated stockpile sites for the temporary storage of dredge material needed for berm construction. At each stockpile area, it is likely that temporary low berms and ditches would be constructed to confine the dredge material and that portable pumps would be installed in these areas to return dredge effluent to the river. The project will impact approximately 38.1 acres of farmed wetlands. Based on habitat unit calculations, approximately 22.0 acres of non-forested wetland would be required to offset the project impacts. Please visit the following link to view the Environmental Assessment and Draft Findings of No Significant Impact developed by the St. Louis District Environmental Branch. The comment period opens July 20, 2012 and closes August 20, 2012.

River History....

July 25, 1940 in Swimsuit History

On this day in in 1946... it was first unveiled....Yes the 1st bikini is shown, to much ado, at a Paris fashion show !

The bikini shocked the French beach-goers the following year (1947) and many didn't approve of the 2 piece swim suit that resembled a woman's underwear...only covering the breast and the groin area....Leaving the area in between bare !

The modern bikini was the brain child of a French engineer by the name of Louis Réard. It was shown at a Paris fashion show on July 25, 1946. Louis named the swim suit after the isle of Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, the site of the world's first nuclear weapon test on July 1, 1946.

The reasoning....
The burst of excitement created by a Bikini would be like that of a nuclear device exploding ! Louis claimed to have "split the Atome" to make the swimsuit smaller.

How things have changed....
Today....one could say that the bikini is probably the world wide "swimsuit of choice" for the female gender.

The sale of bikini swimsuits today produces $811 million a year for businesses around the world..

Elevated Radiation Levels Found Near Flood Wall........

While Metropolitan Sewer District workers were carrying out inspections on manholes, elevated levels of radiation were found in a manhole close to the Salisbury Street flood wall north of the McKinley Bridge. This particular manhole is next to the former Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, which processed uranium during the 40s and 50s. Currently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on cleaning up contamination at the site. The site is downstream from the water intake station........

Corps Fights To Keep Traffic Moving........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard are hard at work trying to keep barge traffic moving along the Mississippi River. Thanks to the heat and drought, the river is low, but not dangerously so. The Corps guarantees a nine foot deep, 300 foot wide navigation channel. The issue is that when the water levels fall, the navigational buoys are relocating constantly, narrowing the channel........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

The Tellico River

Our last picture we took of the Little Tennessee last Monday morning. This water was the clearest and coolest so far on our trip and the whole experience will stand out for years to come. The time was coming near to head back down Tellico Lake and start on our way to Knoxville, but first, we felt adventurous and decided to check out the Tellico River.

It was too early for the River Rock Grill to be open, but one of the waitresses was there opening up when we cruised by and she gave us an enthusiastic wave as we passed. One thing I forgot to mention in the last blog was that when we woke up there at the gas dock on Sunday morning, Rosie was rummaging around in the boat and I asked her what she was looking for. She informed me that her purse was missing and that she was pretty sure she left it on the bar when we left. When she went out on the cockpit to go look for it, the purse was laid nice and neat on one of our cockpit seats where someone brought it down after we left. Nothing was missing from her purse. How many places can you go to where that will happen?
We passed under a bridge on our way up the river and we knew that Sloan's was nearby. There was a dock there at a community park and we made a mental note to go there later and get provisions at Sloan's when we finished exploring the Tellico River. We poked our way up the river at a leisurely pace and marveled at the homes and how many little back coves and nooks were along the way, but one thing nagging at me was that our 12 volt battery bank was not charging like it usually does. I boosted up our speed some and we started to charge the bank, but something was still not right. The chart showed channel markers for about ten miles up the river and we were nearing the ten mile mark and we were in about 34 feet of water. I started wondering about when we should turn around, but honestly, my mind was still on the battery bank. I was contemplating another alternator belt tightening and wasn't looking forward to it in the heat. Fate made the decision for us as to when to turn around when I mistook a tree stump for a channel marker and we found ourselves in a tree stump forest, albeit stumps that were taller than 34 feet.

KA-CHUNK..KA-CHUNK.. KA-CHUNK was the sickening sound just after the hull rolled up onto what was most likely a bent over tree trunk. I pulled the throttles back and then the shifters. The KA-CHUNKING stopped, but when I engaged the transmissions again, on either engine, we began to hit wood. Bits of wood were floating all around us and Swing Set was stuck on top of a tree in a very remote section of river. I tried coaxing her off with delicate applications of each engine, but to no avail...... To read more go to   http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/

The hope is that boaters will be alerted to the possible problems associated with fuel containing a high alcohol content. The NMMA has stated that there are well documented serious safety, environmental and technological concerns related to the use of gas blended with more than 10% ethanol........

Blessing of the Fleet

July 23, 2012

A great big THANK YOU to everyone involved in the Blessing of the Fleet!

Starting with all the Committee members Charles Aten, Marilyn Aten, Maureen Absolon, Mike Baisch, Alan Deutschmann, Craig Tredway, John Bloch, Amy Lewis, Scott Lewis, Andy Dalwitz, Christie, Rick Flier, Bill Kelley, Dave Stolze Printing, Safety Boat personnel Caryl Kastendieck, Karlan Kastendieck, Jim Marr, Follow Me boat Captains Randy Bicknese (on “The Scoundrel” loaned for the day by Dutch Hauhe), Dan Bloch, Past President Tim Tighe, Grafton Harbor’s Joe DeSherlia and crew, The TowBoatUS guys Jeff and Dave, Buoy Boy Scott Hickey, Judge Anne Zerr, Orchard Farm Fire District crew, Rivers Pointe Fire District crew, Father Robert Banken, Marvin Meyer, Tom Stolze and all the crews at Palisades and LongShots, Rich and Toni Luttrell of The Boathouse and crew for hosting our 1st ever Benefit.

Thanks to everyone mentioned above my first year as President went wonderfully! I was impressed the way everyone stepped in and simply took care of things. The weekend setup began with Scotty delivering and inflating the runway buoys Friday evening then early Saturday morning Grafton Harbor’s crew set the buoys in the “2nd Cut” while Orchard Farm Fire District set the runway at Portage. Rivers Pointe Fire District’s crew was on the water all day also helping reset buoys and being ready for anything along with Orchard Farms crew. Rick Flier hosted Pat Reid the photographer while Caryl and Karlan set up at the course end. Jim Marr alternated between monitoring the course entry and ferrying people as needed. All of this was done with the utmost professionalism by all. I have gotten many compliments on how well organized the event was and owe it all to the terrific volunteers.

Our Judges, Bill, Anne and Alan, took on the difficult job of picking the winners while enduring the balmy weather on the deck where Charles relayed potential winners to Craig in the “Pick Out Boat” a waverunner loaned to us for the day by Lauren Kastendieck.

We will be posting pictures and such as they become available on the Blessing of the Fleet website, www.blessingofthefleetstl.com. I know Tom Stolze got lots of good ones from the shore side while Pat Reid did his usual great work from the water this year aboard Rick’s boat.

Towards Fall we will all get together for a little food, beverage, critique of this year and pre planning for next year. I don’t know about the rest of you but I need a couple of months to recuperate.

Thank You all again,
Darryll Weil, President, Blessing of the Fleet, Inc.

P.S. T-Shirt sales went well, Grafton Harbor, LongShots / My River Home and Palisades still have them for sale. I will be working out some sort of online ordering on the website soon

Illinois Waterways

IDNR Says Boat At Your Own Risk........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently issued warnings about boat ramp dangers brought about by low water conditions. The low water levels have made portions of some rivers and lakes practically impassable by boat. Low water conditions are also making boat ramping challenging, as well as dangerous. The IDNR has no plans as of yet to close any ramps, but they advise calling ahead to check water conditions........

Drunken Boating Incidents On The Rise........

Over the past five years, the number of alcohol related boating fatalities has increased on Illinois waterways, prompting officials to urge boaters take drunken boating more seriously. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that Illinois ranked second in alcohol-related fatalities after Wisconsin. Captain Joe Morelock of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources states that drinking is a factor in nearly all of Illinois' boating accidents........
