River Bill:

We enjoyed a great boat ride last night! The river was as smooth as glass and there was a beautiful sunset! We couldn't believe there weren't any other boats out! We figure everyone is saving their energy (and gas!) for The Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday! We are looking forward to cruising down to Portage with everyone this weekend. I'm including a few pics for you!

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Business As Usual For Barge Traffic........

Low water conditions on the Mississippi River below St. Louis may be causing issues for barge traffic, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is able to keep the navigational channel levels up above Lock and Dam No. 26 at Alton. The navigation channel is guaranteed to be 9 feet deep and three hundred feet wide. In areas that the water level is too low, the Corps starts to dredge the channel to keep it navigable. The Corps is currently dredging in Pool 25 above Winfield........

     Oil Spills After Barge Sinking........

Early Thursday, a 110 foot dredging barge sank, capsizing it's towboat, and spilling an undetermined amount of diesel fuel into Lake Huron. The sheen from the spill reached the Michigan shore by Thursday evening. The dredge had the capacity to carry up to 8,000 gallons of fuel, but the owner stated the vessel only had about 1,500 gallons on board when it sank. It also had some lubrication oil aboard. The tow vessel had about 300 gallons of diesel aboard........

Upper Watts Bar to the Fort Loudon Lock

The Clinch River comes into the Tennessee River at Kingston, Tennessee, and we poked our bow about two miles up into the Clinch to see what we could see of the town. We saw lots of church steeples, but won't hold that against them. Better yet, we saw a few docks that we could pull the dinghy up to for a trip to the Dollar General or to one the riverside restaurants that we saw. On our way back downriver, we'll take a side trip up the Clinch up to a dam. We won't lock through as the lock there is not manned all the time.

Coast Guard continues coordination for cleanup of sunken barge, capsized tugboat

CLEVELAND The Coast Guard is coordinating the response to a sunken dredge and capsized tugboat in lower Lake Huron early Thursday morning.

The reported sheen is one mile by two miles and has reached the shoreline

The Coast Guard was notified that at 4:35 a.m., the motor vessel Arthur J., a 110-foot dredge, sank and the motor vessel Madison, a 38-foot tugboat, capsized in lower Lake Huron. The accident occurred five nautical miles north-northwest of the entrance to the St. Clair River, one nautical mile from the Michigan shoreline and four nautical from Canadian waters.

The Coast Guard has established a 100-yard safety zone and is broadcasting a safety marine information broadcast to mariners in the area. The Coast Guard has notified the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency, Environment Canada and St. Clair County Emergency Management. Involved agencies have established a command post at Coast Guard Station Port Huron, Mich.

MCM owns both vessels, and has reported that the tugboat has 300 gallons of diesel fuel aboard and the barge has 1,500 gallons aboard along with a minor amount of lube oil associated with dredge equipment.

Emergency agencies responding to the scene have deployed more than 1,400-feet of boom, a temporary barrier used to contain a spill.

"The Coast Guard will continue to ensure the safety of responders and the public," said Lt. Justin Westmiller, public affairs officer at Coast Guard Sector Detroit. "Our other objectives are to initiate any appropriate actions to control the source and minimize further release, assess the trajectory of any hazardous materials in the water and identify any sensitive areas that need protecting, and keep the public informed as best we can."

The cleanup crews are currently experiencing some delays due to on-scene weather, reported as 2- to 4-foot seas, 15- to 20-knot winds and heavy rain.

The cause of the accident is unknown, and the Coast Guard is investigating

Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri

Boat Remains Revealed By Low Water Levels........

In mid June, Perry Pikey of Portageville, Missouri found the remains of an old wooden vessel on the Missouri bank of the Mississippi River, about 15 miles downriver from New Madrid, Missouri. The origins of the boat are a mystery. It is about 40 to 50 feet in length, and appears to have been a commercial vessel. While much of the boat is held together with wooden pins, it appears to have been updated with some nails and stainless steel. Also, the boat's propulsion system may have been updated with steam or diesel. It seems that there was a fire aboard........

    Fish Kills May Increase........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is saying that the fish kills that have occurred across the state are just the beginning. The lower water levels brought on by the drought, coupled with the extreme heat are reducing the amount of oxygen available to fish. So far this week, the largest fish kill has been on Powerton Lake along the Illinois River near Pekin. The fish kill includes shad, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass, as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass........

On Tuesday, 23 year old Gbenga Y. Afolabi of Texas jumped off of a boat at Table Rock Lake, and drowned. The Missouri State Water Patrol states that Afolabi was having difficulty as soon as he jumped into the lake. The vessel's pilot threw Afolabi a life preserver, but he lost his grip on it and slipped beneath the surface. His body was recovered about two hours later........

Illinois River At Florence, Illinois

Bridge Repairs Could Take 9 Months........

Recently, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that repairs on the Florence Bridge could take up to nine months. The drawbridge portion of the span is locked in the up position to allow barge traffic to transit the area........

A Tow Got Crossways

The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Capt'n Paul Barbary who hails out of Grafton Harbor in the boat..........."The Last One"

Hi Bill,

Yesterday, I was on north bound Illinois Route 3 just down river for the Alton Locks #26, and as always I was looking at the river. I saw a tow boat and it's barges nosed into the bank at a 90 degrees. I can only guess it must have got crossways by accident. It was stretched out across the Mississippi blocking the river. By the time I got turned around and came back to take a better look it had started to correct itself. I took these pictures.
A second tow boat helped them get straightened out and headed for the locks.

See you on the river.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Drought Gripping St. Louis Area, River Low........

While the Upper Mississippi River and the Illinois River are a bit lower than normal, the Mississippi River below the Eads Bridge is down considerably as compared to normal. Typically, the gauge at St. Louis reads around 15 feet. It read 3.4 feet on Monday. Mark Fuchs, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service stated that the comparisons to the drought of 1988 and 1989 are not premature........

Metro East Levees

Levee Work Will Take Longer To Complete........

It will take more time than anticipated to complete the work needed to bring the Metro East levees up to 100-year flood protection. Originally, the project was expected to wrap up by the end of 2014, but a new project study is forecasting that most of the work will be complete by the second quarter of 2015. It is believed that the cost estimates will not be greatly affected by the delay. 100-year certification should be obtained by the end of 2015........

Mississippi River Shipping

    Low River Brings Lighter Barges........

The current dry stretch is not only decreasing farmer's harvests, but also the the business of local barge companies that ship these commodities. Mark Mestemacher of Ceres Barge Line in Fairmont City, Illinois stated that the amount of corn that the company expects to ship will be dramatically decreased. The size of tows have decresed on the order of 30% to 40% due to the low river levels........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Consumers Could Feel Pinch Of Low River Levels........

Since the level of the Mississippi River is around 12 feet lower than it should be, shipping companies are having to lighten their loads, and consequently, make more trips. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are doing what they can to keep the Mississippi River open and safe. Grain and coal are major commodities shipped via the river, and if these products must be shipped by other means, the costs will likely be incurred by consumers........

More On Watts Bar

When we left the Watts Bar lock and headed up the lake we noticed fewer homes on the water, and the hillsides were steep. Steep hillsides mean deep water from bank to bank and the charts verified this fact. There are lots and lots of nooks and crannies to find anchorages, most of them private, but with not a lot of room to move around if a wind picks up. Also noticeable was that a lot of the coves had narrow entrances, leading you into a larger lagoon type body of water once you get inside. It's interesting how the topography changes from one area of the river to another.
Along the way to Blue Springs we encountered lots of islands in the river, some big and some small. Some you could take a shortcut through and save some miles, but some of the shortcuts were for small craft only. This may mean us, but I don't take too many chances on short cuts. We were told about one island, a comparatively small one, at mile 538, near the Euchee Light. Coincidentally, the Euchee Marina is just across the river. Go figure. The island was lined with boaters, but more so, the water from the island to the mainland wasn't very deep, and many smaller boats were anchored in the shallow water and lots of people were congregating, it being a Sunday and all. We like a good party even though we were still green in the gills from Thursday and Friday night, but we perused the crowd with the binoculars to see if we might drop the dinghy and join in. Seen close up, the venue was more like an Aqua Romper Room than a party we'd like to attend, so we pressed on.

Another thing we noticed about Watts Bar was the clarity of the water. The dark blue green color was painted right up to the lake edge, where a light brown or tan lined the last couple of feet to the rocks or trees. This proved that there was deep water bank to bank and the light brown was the bottom of the lake you could see through the water due to its clarity.

We approached Cane Creek where Blue Springs is located, and like some of the other coves we saw, the creek empties into the lake through a narrow cut, and once inside the cut, the cove widens up. It was too early for dinner, so we found a spot to drop the anchor and enjoy the water. The water temperature is cooler than some of the lakes we've come across so far, so we all swam and watched the boaters come and go from the marina.

We cleaned ourselves up and put on our Sunday best and popped a Bud Light to wait for time to head over to the Crow's Nest for something to eat. Swing Set is still loaded with provisions, but weekends are the best time to try out these restaurants on the water, plus there isn't many, if any, other restaurants on Watts Bar and we wanted to try at least one of them out. The wind had been kicking up and clouds were rolling in, and docking any boat during in a wind is something to avoid, so we headed over to the fuel dock to inquire as to where we could tie up.

About half of the paddlers that participate in the race come from Missouri, but many come from such paddling meccas as Oregon and Colorado. Some are coming from as far away as Germany. The report states that the levee meets the Corp's design specifications and is not in danger of failure. RiverBills Window Sticker sighting

Tellico Lake, Tennessee

Click on pic to enlarge

The Picture of the Day.... was sent to us by Capt'n Larry Demko who hails out of "Port Somewhere."   Larry and Susan are on a "Port to Port" voyage this Summer in their land yacht !

Bill:

For almost three weeks , we boated on Pine Island Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, we didn't have our RiverBills bumper sticker with us (it ain't like the American Express card. We left "home" -- in Knoxville-- without it!)

But here I am on Tellico Lake on July 4th. I did bring your bumper sticker. We shot this after "coving out" for a good part of the day.

Aside from me, in the pic are, from left to right: Patti, Scott and Janis --who is a world class skier. Julie Sheffer was kind enough to snap the pic.

We'll be coming home to STL, for about a week, starting about July 24th, then heading back out "on the road". Not sure why that is important, but Susan and I actually miss the ol' places on the river!

Bill,

Fred and Teril Buck and John and I just went Salmon Fishing in Port Washington, WI on Lake Michigan with Van's Catch Charter. We went out for two half day trips on Mon and Tues. We caught our limit on Tues and only two short of of out limit on Mon.

The weather was beautiful, the water was calm and with the assistance of Captain Bryant and First Mate Andrew we had an awesome catch of salmon. After all the fish were cleaned we had almost 120 lbs of salmon. Attached are a couple of pictures of our catch.

Rainy Trip Through "The Narrows"

We had planned on locking through the Nickajack Lock at the end of a long, wet ride when we left the Goose Pond but I noticed an appealing anchorage behind Burns Island, about five miles downstream from the lock and what was even better was we were getting a loud and clear signal from our friends at AT&T. In the photo you can see the main channel through the cut, with the mountains behind it. The clearing on the side of the mountain had cows on it and we could hear them mooing away. The photo was also taken between rain showers, but there was no wind to speak of and we had a quiet and pleasant evening.
Our friends Gary and Judy back in St. Louis had dinner on this same night with friends of theirs from the Chickamauga Lake area, near Chattanooga. It just so happens that Kirk has an upholsterer in his building that could possibly do our zipper work, and Kirk and his wife Jeanne were coming home the next day.
I called Kirk in the morning and he told me he would call his upholsterer and get back with me. We also asked permission to have some medicine sent to their home so we could pick it up either in a few days or on our way back through. I promised that we wouldn't have any fireworks or other illegal items dropped at their door, so Kirk said it would be OK. I told him that we should be at their house no later than the next morning, which would be Friday. We had two locks to transit and there is no way to predict how that was going to go, plus we had about 50 miles of river to negotiate too.
I called the Nickajack Lock on the phone and got no response, but now we had a mission to get to Chickamauga by the next morning, so we pulled up the anchor and headed up to the Nickajack Lock by 9 A.M. I finally was able to get someone to answer the VHF call from the Nickajack Lock and they were dumping the chamber to allow another Northbound vessel to lock up and we could share the chamber with them if we got there in time. I kicked Swing Set in the butt and we arrived just as the gates were opening and the light changed from red to green. We motored in and secured our lines to the floating bollard on our port side, right behind a fifty foot plus motor yacht called "Lady Laurel". The bottom end of the chamber when locking up gets a little turbulent and we sustained a bump on the front port quarter and it was all my fault, I didn't react fast enough to the bouncing around we were getting. I typically keep the engines running while locking through in order to shift forward or reverse as needed to keep the boat alongside the lock wall. The bump only put some flaky rust from the lock wall on our rub rail and it rinsed right off, but Rosie and I decided that four fenders instead of our normal three will be used in the future when we lock through. Had I been drinking beer at the time, none of this would have happened, but it was only a little after 9 A.M.
When we got the horn to leave the chamber I called the "Lady Laurel" and asked if they were going to Lake Chickamauga. The captain said that they were going "clear to Knoxville", so I suggested that they may be going by way of Lake Chickamauga and were they going to be staying in Nickajack Lake, or going straight to LAKE CHICKAMAUGA??? like I asked.
