Bull Shoals Lake

Missouri Department of Conservation is considering striper stocking

THEODOSIA–The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is continuing to assess the potential for stocking a limited number of striped bass in Bull Shoals Lake and welcomes additional comments from anglers regarding this striped-bass fishery.

The main portion of Bull Shoals Lake lies in Arkansas, but several of the lake’s arms extend north across the state line into Ozark and Taney counties in Missouri. Missouri anglers have enjoyed the benefits of a one-time stocking of 19,000 striped bass – commonly called stripers – by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) in 1998. Some of the survivors of that stocking now weigh nearly 70 pounds – record-class fish on either side of the state line. Missouri’s current pole-and-line record for striped bass is a 60-pound, 9-ounce fish caught at Bull Shoals Lake last June.

“This fishery has received national attention and has gotten very popular with anglers,” says MDC Fisheries Field Operations Chief Brian Canaday. “Any time you consider starting a stocking program, there are a lot of factors to consider, and we try to be sure we cover all those bases first.”

Canaday says factors MDC is considering include cost, likelihood of success, angler preferences, public opinion and lake ecology.

Lake Lou Yeager Near Litchfield, Illinois

"Frankenfish" Causes Scare In Lake Community........

Over the past month, tourists and Litchfield locals have been on edge because a fish found in Lake Lou Yeager bears a remarkable resemblance to the piranha. On June seventh, the first piranha-like fish was caught, and another was caught more recently. The first fish was examined, and found to be a pacu, which preys on aquatic vegetation, nuts and snails. It is likely that the fish were former pets that were released into the lake........

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Boat Gas Prices Fall Friday........

On Friday, the price of gas fell some 20 cents at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is not known where gas prices will go, but if they follow the sizable hiccup in crude pricing, boat gas could be on the way back up. The top spot for cheap boat gas is at Village Marina, where a gallon of gas is selling for $3.699. King's Pointe will match the $3.69 price tag, and will lower it to $3.49 per gallon including cash and quantity discounts........

Clifton to Savannah, TN

Before I start on the segment from Clifton, TN to Savannah, TN, I want to show these pictures I wanted to attach from the last post.
The floating homes in the picture here are in the Perryville Marina. They back up to a fairly steep cliff and are pretty neat really, but some need some fixing up.

This is the Beech River we found ourselves in, looking for an anchorage after a long day. I thought the picture would reflect just how narrow this channel was, but compared to what we have been traveling in, this was narrow but it doesn't look like it here.   To read more go to   http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/

US Coast Guard

     News Release.... Boating Safety

Coast Guard reminds boating safety for July 4 holiday week

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is reminding the public to exercise safe boating as the summer season gets started.

The week of July Fourth typically experiences a high number of boaters taking to the water. The Coast Guard advises the public to take responsibility for their safety on the lakes, inland rivers and along the Gulf Coast. Boaters should be aware of, and obey, all federal and state regulations for recreational boating and navigation.

Coast Guard statistics for calendar year 2011 show:

  • 4,588 accidents that involved 758 deaths, 3,081 injuries and approximately $52 million in damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents.

  • Seventy percent of all fatal boating accident victims drowned, and of those, 84 percent were not reported as wearing a life jacket.

  • Only 11 percent of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction. Only seven percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had received boating safety instruction from the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

  • Fifteen children under age 13 lost their lives while boating in 2011. Sixty percent of children who died in 2011 died from drowning.

  • Approximately 16 percent of all loss-of-life cases were the result of boating under the influence.

All boaters should:

  • Always wear a life jacket. Since there is little time to reach for stowed vests when accidents occur, wearing one at all times reduces your risk of drowning. Federal law requires you to have a personal floatation device on board for each passenger.

  • Have a VHF-FM marine-band radio on board. If you are in distress, you can reach the Coast Guard on marine-band channel 16, the distress channel. The Coast Guard, other rescue agencies and other boaters monitor marine-band radios 24/7, which increases the number of people who can respond. Though cell phones are better than no communication device at all, they tend to have gaps in coverage while on the water and have limited battery life.

  • Have a float plan. A float plan is simply letting family family and friends know where you are going and your expected time of return. File a float plan with someone who is not getting underway with you and stick to the plan. If you change plans, contact the person. A float plan assists responders in the search of an overdue boater who may be in distress.

"We urge boaters all the time, and especially, the Fourth of July, to wear their life jackets, let someone know where you're going, and have a marine-band radio to call if you need help," said Capt. Ed Cubanski, chief of incident management for the 8th Coast Guard District. "With our Rescue 21 system, if you call channel 16 on a marine-band radio, we can at least get a bearing to the boater's distress location within 20 miles offshore, which helps responders expedite our search and rescue efforts."

For more boating information, go to http://www.uscgboating.org/.

For media inquiries or additional boating safety information, contact your local Coast Guard unit or the 8th District External Affairs Office at (504) 671-2020.

New Mississippi River Bridge At St. Louis, Missouri

   The Two Towers Are Complete.........

The New Mississippi River Bridge Project has reached a major milestone. The twin concrete towers that will support the road deck have been completed. This was considered to be the most difficult portion of the project, as the tower's foundations are laid about 100 feet below the surface. To commemorate the achievement, the Missouri Department of Transportation took a group of officials on a tour of the towers aboard the riverboat Becky Thatcher........

Illnois River Near Florence, Illinois

    Florence Drawbridge Closed Indefinitely........

Recently, the Illinois Department of Transportation closed the Florence Bridge due to issues with the span's structure. The bridge carries Illinois Route 109 over the Illinois River between Pike and Scott counties. An inspection of the bridge revealed problems with a bearing that leaves the span unsafe. While the bridge is closed to street traffic, river traffic will be allowed to pass. This means that the bridge will be kept in the "Up" position........

Results Of Operation Dry Water--Troop F

Captain Gregory D. Kindle, commanding officer, Troop F, Jefferson City, announces the results of enforcement efforts to detect impaired boat operators in conjunction with the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign. This is the fourth year for the national effort to reduce impaired vessel operation by highlighting enforcement efforts.

Special enforcement operations were conducted on the Lake of the Ozarks, as well as the Osage and Gasconade rivers, on the weekend of June 22 - 24. There were a total of 182 boaters contacted during the special enforcement operation. Troopers made 15 arrests for boating while intoxicated and issued 44 citations for other safety violations.

Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

The River Is Low, American Queen Using Alternate Dockage........

The Mississippi River is down over 52 feet from the peak of last year's flooding, meaning that the American Queen will likely scrub the bottom is she tries to dock her home port at the Beale Street Landing docking facility. Instead, she will dock at Greenbelt Park on Mud Island when she returns to Memphis on Thursday. The low water conditions are caused by a sustained drought across the Midwest and Mid-South........

Lower Mississippi River

    Legislation Proposed To Deepen Channel........

Recently, U.S. Representative Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans introduced legislation that would compel the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the Mississippi River channel by five feet, to 50 feet, from the Gulf to Baton Rouge. The dredged material would then be used to reconstruct wetlands in the river's delta. The cost of the project would be paid for by the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, with additional costs covered by state and local parishes........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

To Perryville, Tennessee and Clifton Too.

We have completed the Kentucky Lake portion of our trip and are now on the actual Tennessee River. Our first day we covered nearly 50 miles in some intense heat. The wind was blowing just about the same speed we were going, but only from our stern, so it was as still as can be onboard. We initially stopped in Duncan Bay for lunch, but the flies had the same idea and there is little worse than heat when the flies are around.
By late afternoon we were bushed, not having really recovered from our great weekend, so I found a place to anchor called Richland Creek. We went way back up in there facing a wind out of the North/Northeast and let the wind generators sing. The wind caused some light chop and that gentle lapping against the hull turns into slapping and thunking, something that makes sleep a bit restless, but we did OK.
It was Cheerios and coffee for breakfast and the day started out crisp and clean with low humidity. Rosie mopped the boat and I checked fluids in the engine room and found a loose hose clamp in the process. I also did some minor repair on our cockpit seat bracket; it's been a while since it's seen as much action as it did last Saturday night.
By 11 A.M. we were on our way and we planned on stopping at Pebble Island Marina to see what they had to offer at the ships store and since it was going to be noon when we arrived, we decided to patronize them by having lunch. The ships store had none of the four items that I was after and the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sorry about their luck. We did talk to a guy who keeps his boat there about our wind generators and about his solar panels. He liked our setup and may add on one wind generator to his houseboat. He's headed to the gulf by late August so we may meet him on our way.
Birdsong Marina was another hour up the river and we wanted to go there too because we stopped there back in 1984 and have fond memories of it. The marina is about 2 miles up a crooked creek. I've ridden on moto-cross tracks with less turns. We hailed the marina on channel 16, then on 68, but as we got closer we got the impression that the place hadn't seen much in the way of upgrades since 1984. If I don't like the looks of the transient dock, Swing Set isn't getting close. Our friends know about some of the places we've docked Swing Set, so when I say it was bad, well...it was bad. I don't want to give them a bad rap if they don't deserve it, but I should have known. When I mention to the fella at Pebble Isle that we were stopping by Birdsong, he was mysteriously silent. I think now we know why.

Meramec River Near Ballwin, Missouri

    Near-Drowning Increases Safety Concerns........

Mere hours after two boys nearly drowned in the Meramec River in Castlewood State Park, swimmers returned to the water. Many of those swimmers were not wearing life jackets. There have been many drownings on that portion of the Meramec River in recent years, on average, one to two people drown there each year. The Metro West First Protection District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources worked together to place warning signs that will hopefully shock swimmers into wearing life jackets........

News Release From BoatUS

What's Going to Happen to Boaters Over the July 4th Holiday?
BoatUS Knows...

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 27, 2012 – For recreational boaters, being on the water for the July 4th holiday is akin to driving to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving. Waterways are jammed, launch ramps are mayhem, and getting home after the fireworks end can feel like a California freeway at rush hour — except there are no breakdown lanes. The folks at Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) have seen it all before, and have these three tips on how to overcome the challenges of boating’s busiest day of the year:

Take care of the little things now: With July 4th occurring mid-week this year, more boaters are expected to take the week off. This likely means more use – and wear and tear on the boat. Some boats may have been recently launched and simply not up to snuff yet. Regardless, now is the time to address the things that still need fixing – with extra attention paid to the electrical (battery, charging system, navigation lights) and the fuel system (fuel lines, fresh gas). With boat trailers, check tires for wear, bearings for grease, and ensure all lights work.

The Christmas tree light effect: Each year after the fireworks shows end and boaters head home, the telephone switchboard at the BoatUS Towing Service 24/7 Dispatch Center lights up like a Christmas tree with hundreds of simultaneous requests for on-the-water assistance from across the country. What’s the best way to prevent from having to call BoatUS Towing Services? Don’t run down the battery playing music all day and be careful to avoid anchor line entanglements. On the way home, post extra lookouts, don’t take shortcuts, and be patient at the launch ramp. Powerboats need to watch their wakes. With nightfall, the chance of accidents increases, so it’s a good idea to have everyone in life jackets. If you’re concerned about getting on-the-water or roadside assistance for a broken down boat trailer or tow vehicle, check out www.BoatUS.com/towing.

The extra guest factor: For the holiday, many boating guests are likely to be kids, but some vessels won’t have the right-sized life jacket aboard. Boaters can borrow a kid’s life jacket at no cost at over 500 locations by going to www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/LJLP/map. Also, smaller boats are prone to overloading, leaving just a precious few inches of freeboard to prevent wakes and waves from coming aboard. Extra guests also likely means a good party – it is America’s birthday, after all, so celebrate! Just be sure alcohol doesn’t become a safety issue. Waiting to drink until you safely get back home ensures everyone will have a good time.

Check this out Bill!!

On a late evening drift home to Portage, an extra friendly hen swam up to the boat and climbed aboard. The critter walked right up Mikes leg and on to his shoulder. Funny stuff! Theresa was next, "STELLA" ( as Mike named her) made it right up to T's "nest" and kissed her. Stella stayed with us all night, (outlasted Mike).

Stella left in the morning to spread more cheer, have everyone watch for her on the river!

Keep up the good work Bill,

Thanks!

Meramec River Near Ballwin, Missouri

Two Young Swimmers Rescued By Three Teens........

Three teens rescued a pair of 11 year old boys from the Meramec River, perhaps saving their lives. The two boys were swimming in the Meramec River at Castlewood State Park, when they were pulled under the water by the current. The three teens witnessed the other kids submerge, and thought the boys were horsing around. They quickly figured out they were in trouble, leapt into the river and pulled them to safety. The two boys were not wearing life jackets........

EMPHASIS: Troop I Announces Boating Safety Enforcement Operation

Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that sometime this week Troop I officers will participate in a special enforcement operation in Crawford County. The emphasis of the operation will be the detection of those individuals who are operating either a motor vehicle or water vessel while intoxicated.
Captain Kenley stated, “No one should have to travel a Missouri highway or waterway with the fear that an impaired driver or operator may put their life or the lives of their family in jeopardy. Protecting those on our roads, lakes, and streams from these unsafe practices will always be a priority. To that end, we will strictly and vigilantly enforce all Missouri laws.”

News Release From BoatUS

Mark Zona Says He'll "Be Nice" to BoatUS Angler Winner

Win a Free Fishing Trip with the "Z-Train"

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 26, 2012 – If you’re an angler and you know what a “slaunch” is, chances are you’re a fan of Mark Zona, the self-proclaimed “knucklehead” host of TV’s Bassmaster Elite Series and “Zona’s Awesome Fishing Show.” Now, with some help from BoatUS Angler, the 24-hour towing service and insurance provider, Zona wants to take you to all of his secret locations on his home waters in the state of Michigan for an “Awesome Fishing Trip” in search of slaunches – monster smallmouth bass. You can earn a chance to win by simply becoming a BoatUS Angler member at www.BoatUSAngler.com/zona.

Speaking about the trip, Zona said, “This year is prime for a northern smallmouth beatdown! We’re going to time this trip perfectly – it will be Chicago Bears, smashmouth, autumn trophy hunting at it's finest! We’re gonna knock their lights out. And if we don't, well, we will still look fantastic!”

Anglers must join by the contest entry deadline of August 15, 2012, and all current BoatUS Anglers are automatically entered. On August 20, 2012, a random drawing will be held to choose three finalists, who will then compete for the trip by telling, in their own 250-500 words, why they should be selected to go fishing with “the Z-Train,” as fans affectionately call Zona. Entrants must also include one (1) photo. Selected contestants must submit their essay and photo on or before August 27, 2012.

The fishing trip will take place in October, 2012 in Michigan. Included with the prize are a $1,000 gift card for airfare and lodging, and a BoatUS Angler prize pack containing BoatUS Angler logo apparel.

Additional entries can be gained by recruiting your fishing buddies and sponsoring a new BoatUS Angler member – once they join you get an extra chance to win. To sponsor a BoatUS Angler member or view contest rules, to go to www.BoatUSAngler.com/zona.

BoatUS Angler, a membership program from the nation’s largest association of recreational boaters, BoatUS, offers boat-owning fishermen services such as on-the-water breakdown and towing assistance provided by the largest fleet of towboats in North America, roadside boat trailer and tow vehicle assistance through 18,000 specialized towing companies, and fishing boat insurance that has the right coverage for anglers. Benefits begin at only $38 that includes BoatUS Angler membership with On-the-Road Towing, which provides services such as fuel delivery, jump-starts, flat tire assistance, lockout service, ramp winching and tow truck service for both your trailer and tow vehicle while trailering your boat. Mississippi River At Dubuque, Iowa

    Body Recovered From The River........

Close to noon on Tuesday, a body was found in the Mississippi River near Miller Riverview Park in Dubuque, Iowa. It is possible that the body is that of a man who went missing after falling from a boat, near Lock and Dam No.11. The speeding vessel continued on for miles without the man, until the authorities were able to stop it. The search for the man had been stopped late Monday evening.......

Early Tuesday afternoon, emergency crews were called out to the Missouri River at Great Falls, Montana for a suspected drowning. Close to 4 pm, the rescue efforts shifted to a recovery mission. YesterYear's River Pictures of the Day in 2011 ........ were sent to us by Mark Cutler of the boat Cutty's Ark

Hello Bill,

While rounding out of Bolter Chute last night for a leisurely cruise and float, the crew of Cutty's Ark spotted a solitary canoe in the main channel. We shut the boat down and hailed the two young men in the canoe. Alex and Cliff, are canoeing from the Mississippi headwaters to NOLA as an adventure and a fundraising effort. They are raising money for the Friends of the Fishermen Fund. It's goal is to help gulf coast fishermen who have been impacted by the massive oil spill there last summer. Their website is: http://www.arsts.org

I have attached some pictures taken last night. Note that they have rigged outriggers on their canoe for stability. The canoe was purchased from Craigslist back home in Michigan. They are Michigan State alums and have the logo painted on their boat. Yesterday was the 34th day of their adventure. They are camping along the way, and have met many interesting people.

We fed them, slaked their thirst, and saw them pull into Grafton Marina last night.

The first pic is of them as they were leaving us last night. The next two pics are of Cliff and Alex a little closer up (along with part of our crew). The final pic is of the young men on the front of Cutty's Ark. Cliff is taking a picture of the beautiful Mississippi sunset. River cat "Tito" is surveying the scene.

Just another story from the Mississippi, you can't hear her talk if you're not out there.....

Results Of Missouri State Highway Patrol's Participation In

National Effort—Operation Dry Water— Crackdown On Impaired Boaters

NEWS RELEASE
June 25, 2012

EMPHASIS: Results Of Missouri State Highway Patrol's Participation In National Effort—Operation Dry Water— Crackdown On Impaired Boaters

Colonel Ronald K. Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the results of enforcement efforts to detect impaired boat operators in conjunction with the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign. This is the fourth year for the national effort to reduce impaired vessel operation by highlighting enforcement efforts. Troopers conducted four special operations over the weekend.

A vessel sobriety checkpoint was conducted near Point #7 on Table Rock Lake at the Kimberling City Bridge, on Saturday, June 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Troopers checked 159 vessels during the operation, made three arrests for boating while intoxicated, and issued 13 additional citations and 30 warnings for other safety violations.

A boating while intoxicated saturation was conducted on the Black River in Reynolds County on Saturday, June 23. There were no arrests for boating while intoxicated. However, troopers issued 31 citations for other safety violations.

A boating while intoxicated saturation was conducted on the Current River in Shannon County on Sunday, June 24. There were no arrests for boating while intoxicated. However, troopers issued 24 citations and one warning for other safety violations.

Vessel sobriety checkpoints were conducted also on the Meramec and Missouri rivers in Phelps, Pulaski, Crawford, Dent and Franklin counties. The checkpoints were conducted on Sunday, June 24, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. There were no boating while intoxicated arrests made. Troopers issued one citation and 11 warnings for other safety violations.

Including those made during the four special operations, troopers arrested a total of 20 people statewide for boating while intoxicated during the 2012 Operation Dry Water weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience.

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Towboat Fleet Reaches Milestone: Over 300 Locations

Significant Inland Growth; Requests for Assistance up 10%+ in 25 States

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 25, 2012 – The BoatUS Towing Services on-the-water towboat fleet has reached a milestone: there are now over 300 TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist locations across North America, making it the largest recreational boat towing operation in the world. “We’ve added 14 new locations this year alone, all ready to respond 24 hours a day,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. To find any location on a map, go to www.BoatUS.com/serviceslocator.

With half a million members, the on-the-water assistance service for recreational boaters has three times more locations than the closest competitor. On average, 65,000 requests are handled annually from boat owners seeking on-the-water help such as a battery jump-start, soft ungrounding, fuel drop off, or a tow home back to a marina or launch ramp. Business is booming: To date, BoatUS reports that 25 states are already up over 10% in towing dispatch volume over last year. “The free BoatUS Towing App for iPhone and Android have helped drive this increase, along with better weather year to date,” said Cardarelli.

Ten of the program’s 14 new locations this year are located on freshwater lakes and rivers, reflecting the Association’s growth of services for freshwater boaters. “The inland regions, particularly the South, Midwest and Great Lakes, have a lot of boaters who need round the clock service, which many marinas don’t offer. We’ve also had a great response, especially from anglers,” added Cardarelli.

The on-the-water towboat service, a program modeled after roadside assistance clubs for automobile owners, offers a choice of membership plans for recreational boaters and sailors to anglers with fishing boats. Annual towing plans now start at $58 a year for freshwaters and $149 for saltwaters and Florida. Both include a choice of either BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership.

BoatUS also has a towing service plan for those who trailer their boats – something most roadside assistance clubs don’t include. For $14 additional annually, the Association’s “Trailer Assist” program provides roadside help for both boat trailers and tow vehicles (while towing), and will tow both up to 100 miles to a safe location, repair facility, or home. Ramp winching, fuel drop off and lock out services are also all included. Over 18,000 towing companies nationwide stand by ready to assist.

For more information on any of BoatUS’ towing services, go to www.BoatUS.com/towing. The towing service is a part of Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), which began in 1966 and is the nation's leading advocate for recreational boaters providing over half a million members with a wide array of consumer services, government representation and money-saving programs.

Last Great Weekend in Kentucky Lake

This is the photo I took last Friday morning looking out at Lake Barkley from "Nickle Cove". From here, it was just a couple of miles over to Green Turtle Bay where we met up with Madge and Jerry. Brett and Christine came down with some other friends from St. Louis, too, Brad and Leslie.
After a nice dinner at the Green Turtle Bay Yacht Club we went back down to the dock where a group was gathered around and Jerry and Bobby kept us entertained with some guitar playing and singing. As the crowd thinned out way after midnight, it was just Bobby, Jerry, Rosie and I...and another friend, Jack Daniels. Having been admonished earlier about not keeping quiet during some of the more quieter tunes, Rosie was doing her best to refrain from most of her comments but just as Bobby began to pluck out a tune, Rosie spied a bag of snacks sitting on a table in front of him and she belts out, "HEY, ARE THEM PEANUTS??!!" She's great at concerts too.
On Saturday morning, our friends from St. Louis, John and Tina, along with another couple from La Grange, KY, showed up and by 11 A.M. we were loaded up and following Blonde Moment over to the Quarry for a day of fun.
