More River Pictures... were sent to us by Rick Estes of the boat Y2Katy

Hi, Bill,

Hope you had a good father's day, I did. We had a boatload of fathers and their offspring, all enjoying the weather, the river and the company of friends and family. We beached on the slough side of the Island 521 sandbar for a few hours. That's some of the crew at their "best"?

My 4 year old grand-nephew, Parker, is quite the daredevil, that's him in action, jumping off the Y2Katy for the 74th time (mom Jenny ever watchful).

Parker and big sis, Gabby, took turns helping me find my way back to Lake Center.

See, ya on the river!

Bill,

Just a few pictures I found interesting today--Elsah, the intersection of Route 3 and Route 100 in Grafton, the Loading Dock, a barge at the level of the river road and a boater that I am assuming was moving to Alton Marina. Hope everyone stays safe during this high water.

Pray for the river to recede soon.

US Coast Guard

    Operation Dry Water........

LOUISVILLE, Ky.Coast Guard units and partnering maritime agencies will be increasing their presence on the Ohio River and it tributaries in support of Operation Dry Water, June 22-24, 2012.

Operation Dry Water is an annual nationwide campaign during which federal, state and local maritime agencies take to the water to educate boaters and raise awareness that it is unsafe, as well as illegal, to operate a boat under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

According to 2010 Coast Guard statistics, alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 19% of the deaths. States have gotten tougher in recent years in enforcing laws against this high-risk behavior. Operating a recreational vessel with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher is against federal and most state laws. Boaters caught operating under the influence will have their voyage terminated and their vessel impounded. Additionally, penalties can include arrest, fines, loss of boating privileges, even loss of driving privileges.

Operation Dry Water, launched by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in 2009, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, puts thousands of local, state and federal marine law-enforcement officers on the water the weekend before Independence Day to give BUI enforcement high visibility before a holiday known for drinking and boating – and deadly accidents.

"Our message is a simple one," said Ed Huntsman, 8th Coast Guard District recreational boating safety coordinator. "We want recreational boaters to have fun on the water, but we won't tolerate boaters operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

Mississippi River Delta

River Mud Could Be Used To Fight Erosion........

In an effort to fight the loss of the Mississippi River delta, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would like to the mud they dredge out of the channel and place it on the western side of the delta. The area is known as the Bird's Foot delta. The majority of the shipping traffic passes through the Bird's Foot delta. The Corps intends to construct wetlands and marshes in what is now open water in the Gulf of Mexico........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Bopping Around Kentucky Lake

I just want to update the blog a little. We are still in Kentucky Lake and really enjoying our time here. We plan to head upriver next Monday so some friends can come visit this coming weekend.
The last couple of weekends have been filled with meeting new people and having a whole lot of fun. Boaters are easy to meet because there is lots in common, but at times there is more in common with others than most.
To prevent any potential embarrassment I won't mention names, but last weekend some friends lost their anchor and about 150 of chain in the quarry. Ouch. That kind of tackle doesn't come cheap, but it wasn't their fault as it could happen to anyone. The steep rock cliffs underwater in the quarry are natural snags for any anchor and they don't let go.
We've been in Pisgah Bay for the most part but the deep cove we were in is a natural ski cove and the skiers were using Swing Set for a pylon. We also had horrible service in there and it's nice to be able to send emails and post the blog without waiting forever for things to upload. I do want to mention that in response to AT&T's advertised "thousands and thousands" of WiFi hotspots across the USA: I think you have to be sitting right on top of the counter at places like McDonald's or Dunkin' Donuts to get service.
We had extra incentive to move our anchorage this morning. Like I said, we were in Pisgah Bay, having stumbled over to it after a late Sunday in The Quarry. It's the next cove over and I needed my Navionics to assist in finding a place to drop anchor. Bud Light strikes again.
Yesterday was recuperation day, but we did manage to take our trash to a state campground nearby and dump it, but mostly we swam around and read our Kindles. A houseboat came in late in the afternoon, and so did all those sailboats like they did last Monday and we all gave each other lots of room. The houseboat however, pulled up the hook and moved over pretty close to us this morning and we decided to vacate the premises. Not so much as a privacy issue, but ski boats would have been forced to navigate between our two boats and even make bigger wakes for us. The mom and pop crew on the rental houseboat seemed to be having some sort of disagreement over something this morning and I asked Rosie what she thought was the matter. She said that maybe their engine was dead and I asked her how she knew that they even had an injun', and why was he dead? She barely was able to keep the hot coffee she was drinking from spewing out her nose.
So now we're back in Smith Bay and we have a great signal. We had some business to attend to with our financial advisor and were able to print some documents, sign and scan them, and send them back. Pretty neat to be able to conduct this type of business while on the hook.
We have 1/4 tank left on our water but we think it will last until Friday when we motor over to Green Turtle Bay once again. We'll be picking friends up there on Saturday morning for a fun day in The Quarry once again. I think we can last until then if we keep using the lake for our own bath tub, come to think of it, it's how the injuns did it.
It's hot here like it is in most of the midwest and we always wonder how we are going to be able to cope with the heat. Daytime is not bad, but the key is if the nights are cool and right now they are. Florida will make us or break us, but plan B will be to get a slip somewhere and plug in until the temperatures come down. Today we plan on staying in the nice clear water here in Kentucky Lake and take it as it comes. I'm tempted to try out our snorkel gear but I figure there's no hurry, even clearer water is on the horizon.
It'll be a few days before I post again but you can sign up to be emailed when a new blog is posted. I can't promise any juicy tales from the weekends, but you never know, I might make a mistake one Monday morning.

The Great Lakes

More Carp DNA Found Near Lake Michigan........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they have found more Asian carp DNA in water samples taken near Lake Michigan. The samples were collected on May 22 from Lake Calumet as well as the Little Calumet River. An electric barrier in the Chicago River is intended to keep the carp from migrating into the Great Lakes. Over the past several years, dozens of samples taken from above the barrier have contained carp DNA, but only one carp has been found there........

The Pictures of the Day... Are of Capt'n Tim, Little John, Terry and Martha ready to pull Captain Tim's newest pirate ship to New York with Little John's motor home.

The crew left St. Charles on Monday morning about 5AM and stopped last night about 100 miles out side of Pennsylvania.  Martha reported that they got lots of attention everywhere they stopped.

Destination is a Boy Scout camp in upper state New York.  The rig is about 80 feet long.

Captain Tim putting the finishing touches on the ship sails, while Wench Martha looks on.  Little John is hard at work in the back of the ship.

A row of water cannons are mounted along each side of the ship too !

Lets look inside the ship....

There are 18 bunks for the scouts to sleep. Each one with it's own pirate name !

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day

Article by Sherri Stanczak

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2011 .........

There are many boats on the river that can take the wakes pretty good. However, a hovercraft seems to glide right over them. Logan Braden, age 40, from Granite City, just built his fifth hovercraft. After investing about $9,000 and 2-1/2 years of labor, his masterpiece is complete.

This beauty has got up to 61 mph, but he is hoping to get it up even higher. It gets its lift from a 32” 4-bladed propeller with a 16 hp Briggs and Stratton. While the back pushes it with a Subaru 4-cylinder car engine. He is able to just drive it right onto his trailer.

Logan built it from a skeleton with three-quarter inch skinned pine with one-eighth inch marine plywood. The thrust duct and steering rudders are made of styro-foam fiber glassed over with epoxy resin. Most of the material he used was bought locally. The craft is 7-1/2 feet wide and 17-1/2 feet long. And it weighs approximately 1,000 pounds.

He bought the blueprints for model #UH17T from Universal Hovercraft. They have been in business since 1967, created by an aeronautical engineer. They sell kits, as well as buy, sell and trade all types of hovercrafts – new and used. They also sell parts for them. Their website is www.hovercraft.com.

Some people confuse the hovercraft with airboats. Airboats and hovercrafts are similar, yet different in their own way. An airboat is a boat and a plane. They have a nitro engine located on the top of the boat which propels the boat across the water. The hovercraft is lifted and pushed across the water.
Hovercrafts are unique in the way they are supported by a cushion of air. Even though they are supported by air, they are still not considered to be an aircraft. However, they are able to go through rough terrain. Since they can go over land, water and ice, they are used a lot in many rescue situations. The military uses larger ones to transport tanks, cars and other vessels.

Logan has been interested in hovercrafts ever since he was about 9 or 10 years old. Bob Windt, from Universal Hovercraft got him into racing them throughout his teenage years. He raced in areas such as Indiana, Ohio, St. Louis and Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Logan’s hovercraft has already been up to Wisconsin where he landed it on the ice. This is a trip he plans on making again. He will also be attending the Cordova National Rally at Hovercraft America on July 22, 2011.

Logan is married with 2 step-children and 3 grandchildren. He works at Metro East Industries in Fairview Heights, Illinois as a welder. He plans to keep building hovercrafts and making improvements to the one he just built, which was finished last fall. He usually puts it in at Alton and can be seen cruising up and down the Mississippi River.

US Army Corps of Engineers

Carlyle Lake trail designated as National Recreation Trails

ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that the Carlyle Lake Multi-Use Trail is one of five Corps recreation trails that have been designated national recreation trails by the U.S. Department of the Interior for this year. Carlyle’s trail will join eight other St. Louis District trails already on the national network of 1,150 designated trails, encompassing more than 13,650 miles of existing trails and trail systems.

National recreation trail designation recognizes those trails that link communities to recreational opportunities on public lands and in local parks across the nation. The first national trails were established in the early 1970s.

The Carlyle Lake trail is a successful partnership between the city of Carlyle and the Corps. The 10.3-mile multi-use trail system connects the city of Carlyle to Carlyle Lake and passes through numerous recreation areas and diverse, scenic wildlife habitat ranging from lake, forest, agricultural fields, restored prairie and wetland areas. Visitors also pass along historical and interpretive points of interest including the Carlyle Lake Dam, the General Dean Suspension Bridge (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and the Goshen Trail. The trail will receive a certificate of designation, a letter of congratulations from the Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, and national recreation trail markers.

Eight trails at St. Louis District recreation areas have already received this designation and are enjoyed daily by visitors.

'Big bannana boat' Dredge Thompson takes final voyage on Mississippi River

June 13, 2012

By Shannon L Bauer, USACE

ST. PAUL, Minn. (June 13, 2012) -- Corps employees and retirees, river residents and those affectionately known as river rats lined the banks of the Upper Mississippi River to see the Dredge William A. Thompson make its final voyage, June 12-13.

The Thompson left the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers service base in Fountain City, Wis., around 11:30 a.m. yesterday and is expected to arrive at its final destination in Prairie du Chien, Wis., around 6 p.m. today.

There, a nonprofit group, Community Development Alternatives, Inc., will accept the dredge from the Corps and make it a permanent static display.

The Corps' St. Paul District used the Thompson to maintain 850 miles of the Upper Mississippi River, 335 miles of the Illinois River and other inland rivers from May 1937 until May 2005, well after its projected life of 50 years. While in use, it was the largest of its type and meticulously maintained throughout its working life.

"There's a lot of Fountain City history going down the river right now," said John Sagan, Fountain City resident and Fountain City Historical Society member, as he watched the MV General Warren tow the Thompson away from the Corps' dock.

"It was a big piece of this town," he explained. "A lot of people here worked on this boat. It helped keep this community going."

Mark Krumholz, Corps navigation program specialist, worked for several years to find the Thompson a new home, not wanting to see the vessel scrapped.

"The Dredge Thompson is an icon on the river. It's known to all as the big banana boat," he said. "It saw the transitioning of the Upper Mississippi River from steamboats, Mark Twain and lead lines to state-of-art diesel-electric power and a new era of channel maintenance by the Corps of Engineers.

"I started my career with the Corps on the Dredge Thompson as a deckhand on the midnight shift in August of 1974, so to see it sold to someone who is going to take care of it is extremely rewarding," he added.

The dredge was named after William A. Thompson, a Corps employee from 1878 through 1925. In 1896, he was appointed to the position of assistant engineer, responsible for improvements on the Mississippi River between Winona, Minn., and the mouth of the Wisconsin River at Prairie du Chien, Wis. He held this post until his death.

The Dravo Corporation of Pittsburgh built the Dredge Thompson for the St. Paul District in 1936 for nearly $900,000, or $1.3 million with contract modifications. It was christened in Pittsburgh in March 1937 by William Thompson's granddaughter, Louise, and first sent to New York, where its galley, mess and quarters were fitted. It was then returned to Pittsburgh, where crews completed its construction.

In May 1937, it made a 1,700-mile trip down the Ohio and up the Mississippi rivers, arriving at its permanent station in Fountain City, May 22, 1937. Through nearly seven decades of service, the Thompson's original design was only slightly modified. In 2005, it was replaced by the Dredge Goetz.

"The city is sad to see it leave, but we're glad to have it go to a good home in Prairie du Chien," said Fountain City Mayor Peter Schaffner.

A Look Back At The Lyman Boat Works........

Back before the Civil War broke out, German immigrants Bernard and Herman Lyman started building small wooden boats as a hobby.  In 1875, the Lyman Boat Works was founded in Cleveland, Ohio.  In 1928, the company moved their facilities to Sandusky, Ohio.  The Lyman boats became very popular; the company eventually had boat dealers all across the U.S..  Fiberglass started gaining popularity during the 60's, making wooden vessels technically obsolete.  The company did make some fiberglass vessels, but their last wooden production vessel was built in 1973........

Missouri Fishing News

    Discussions Continue On Crayfish Regulation........

Invasive crayfish are a hot topic with the Missouri Department of Conservation, as they are gathering information to make an informed scientific decision on how to control them. A proposal would prohibit the purchase, sale or importation of live crayfish for use as bait. The proposal would still allow anglers to catch crayfish for use as bait. Field studies have shown that invasive crayfish have caused the decline of six native Missouri species........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Turtleville Is No Place To Buy Groceries

It's been a few days since my last post and there are reasons, and they are still not resolved. I couldn't get access to my blogging editor page and I thought it was our location, although we were in Pisgah Bay were I posted my last blog from and it was slow, but it worked.
This morning we moved one cove over where I have 4G service but the blogging editor page was still blank. Maybe someone is trying to tell me something. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and I'm an old cat skinner, so I saw a button called "old blogger interface", so I pressed it. Someone is definitely trying to tell me something because here we are, blogging away as an "old blogger".

On the morning after our storm we moved over to what is known by our friends here as "Private Cove". There is a narrow opening off of the channel of the Tennessee River here in Kentucky Lake and the cove opens up fairly well, but not so much that we would want to get much wind as we cannot let out much scope because the bank is already pretty close, getting us into what Rosie calls "Snake City".
Snake City is anywhere a person gets in close proximity to tall grasses near the water, or anywhere you don't want to find yourself. Years ago when I raced motorcycles, be it moto-cross or enduros, we called these the Giggly Weeds. Probably for different reasons, however.........To read more go to   http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/

The Pictures of the Day... were sent to us by Capt'n Larry Demko who got into his land yacht with his wife Susan and took off from St. Louis on a "Gypsy Tour."

Bill:

While everyone on the river is preparing for the Blessing of the Fleet, Susan and I are on the 2nd leg of our "gypsy" tour.

While I'm certain it's not as adventurous as Mike and Rosie's trek (and definitely doesn't deserve a blog), we're spreading the "gospel of Riverbills" wherever we go!

For three weeks, beginning in late May and spilling over into early June, we spent some time boating on Tellico Lake and the Tennessee River around Knoxville. And old friend of ours has a 25 ft Cobalt on the Tennessee River so we've taken some sight-seeing "tours" and spent some great days on the water. ( I was going to describe the the boating as "delightful" but thought Mike Holaus might think my estrogen levels were too high!)

The pics here are during one of our days on Tellico Lake. We went past the Sea Ray plant in Vonore, TN and grabbed lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Then we stopped for gas at another marina/waterfront restaurant, The River Rock Grill.

In one pic, I appointed Chas McKweon, our boating host, as he official holder of our traveling Riverbills bumper sticker. I'm also in the pic along with Janette McKeown.

In the other pic, Susan and Janette are in the boat right before we fueled up (yes, they were out of the boat while we were fueling). Of course, we all wanted to hold the Riverbills sticker, but I "appointed" Susan to hold it. She said she feels closer to you & the River when the adhesive sticks to her fingers. I thought that was kinky.

We're now in St. James City, FL and our boating area is Pine Island Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. I'll send pics from time to time. (I'm sure you're looking forward to that! LOL )

We've eaten at Woody's Waterside -- the home of the buoy that resembles the famous, southern-most buoy located in Key West. I can walk there from my brother-in--law's house. (not to Key West, to Woody's!)

If we run into any St. Louisans, we'll mark the occasion with a pic or two.

I hope you have good weather for the Blessing the of the Fleet.

Hi Bill,

Was at Mason on Saturday and met a group of boaters that came down from Louisiana and Pittsfield to enjoy another part of the river.

Here is a photo of several happy boaters from the vessel "Pig Tales" out of Louisiana.

Sorry, I did not get their names…it must have been the heat that caused it to slip my mind….

This year the theme is “Mark Twain.” Two boat parades will depart at 1 p.m. and then merge at 2:15 p.m. to pass by the Shrine of Our Lady of the Waters at Portage des Sioux, where the actual blessing takes place. One parade is scheduled to leave Yacht Club of St. Louis and head downstream; the other one leaves Harbor Point Yacht Club and travels upstream. A panel of judges—on which publisher Nelson Spencer served one year—chooses Best-Decorated boats in several classes.

M/V Richard A. Baker........

Bill;

No media source has stated the name of the towboat from where the two deckhands came from to try to rescue the five people in St. Louis harbor.

It was the M/V Richard A. Baker, owned by American Commercial Lines LLC, Jeffersonville, Ind., and operated by Inland Marine Service, Inc., Hebron, Ky.

I know that many of the pleasure boaters in the area have probably seen this boat go by and we should give credit where credit is due.

I have already nominated the two deckhands to the Carnegie Hero Fund for their actions.
