Bill,
Just checked out Riverbills, so you were in one of the boats watching? Honked as you left….
Hope you enjoyed the show. I've enclosed a "RiverBill's Short Shot", bet you didn't see that from your boat. The show had a couple rough spots, but overall most of the acts came off. Beginning of the season…...

You'll have to come by land next time so you can hear the announcer !

Hi Bill:

I got a pic for you for National Fishing Week. This is young aspiring fisherman Nick Cattoor. Nick is the son of Steve and Chris Cattoor who boat out of Eagles Landing. Chris is my wife Sue’s sister. Nick and his Dad went fishing on the Missouri River last weekend. Nick out-fished his DAD and caught the big fish of the day. He is proudly posing with it. The fish was caught somewhere between the Page and Highway 40 bridges. It would be cool if you would make Nick’s day and post this picture.

Thanks…and…
See you on the River!

Another Picture of the Day... was sent to us by Captain Captain Jim Marr

Hi Bill:

Grandson Aidan catches many fish. This is a 6 pound Buffalo Fish he caught off our dock at Lake of the Ozarks.

Not a big one in the big world of Buffalo Fish, but a good size to eat. Last night he caught a 25+ ? big Buffalo but it broke the line.

He has not eaten Buffalo Fish before so he asked the best fish cooker he knows (Grandpa) to clean it and cook it.

Dinner is Sunday night. You are welcome to come (call ahead for a seating assignment). We will also have Fresh Catfish caught out of the spring fed - clear waters of the Big Niangua River.

Hush Puppies, Corn on the Cobb, Greens and Strawberry Shortcake are compliments of Grandma.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

One Month and Counting

We left St. Louis one month ago and it seems like yesterday. I thought I would post a quick blog with some random thoughts because unlike the books I have read about other people doing this sort of thing, a blog is something that needs continuous input to keep readers interested, especially if the blog is accessible through a link on several other websites like this one is.
I am constantly thinking about what the next blog will be about. It's easy to do when we are traveling because new things happen all the time. Now that we are resting easy here in Smith Bay on Kentucky Lake, new things to report are harder to find.
Today marks the fifth day we have been in this spot; the anchors have not moved an inch. It's nice here and the view is excellent. I have posted updates on our facebook account on how we've been just lounging, grilling, swimming, etc., and our friends reply that they are envious, jealous, and just plain hate us. But just like the books I have read on the subject that have inspired us, I'm hoping this blog will in turn inspire others to follow their dream, whatever it is.
There are still things to do on a boat at all times. We've been waxing, of course, and doing little odds and ends that always need doing. The other day, after the severe thunderstorm that we had, I found over 4" of water in the cooler in the dinghy. Not a problem if we were using it for a cooler, but our life jackets, minor tools, and handheld VHF are stored in there. The VHF is only weatherproof, not waterproof, but it was bobbing around in the bottom of the cooler and did not offer a response when I fished it out and turned it on. Being through several floods over the years, I have some experience with such occasions, so I took it apart and let it dry out. I put it back together and it started squawking like a newborn baby.
Then, I finally got wise and left the drain plug out of the cooler for future downpours, you would think I would have done that before, but I didn't think the lid would leak so much. For added insurance, I added another drain hole nearer to the bottom of the cooler so no more water will accumulate in there, plus decided to keep the VHF in the pouch of a little cooler we keep in the big cooler, for items that need, well...need to be kept cool.
I also found the primer ball on the outboard on the dinghy was getting cracked. It's only three years old, but rubber does that. Yesterday we went on a mission to find a new primer ball for the fuel line. We were going to visit our friend Madge at Green Turtle Bay anyway, so we finished some chores in the morning and headed downriver about 6 miles, first to Kentucky Dam Marina, and then to GTB. Kentucky Dam Marina had primer balls for a cheap price, but not the size we needed, but we bought some wax and toilet deodorant there, just to spread the wealth around some. After getting gas for the dinghy at Green Turtle Bay, we visited their well stocked ship's store and got the primer ball we needed, but at two and half times the price. This is not the life for comparison shopping.
Madge was just arriving for her weekend at the boat when we pulled up and she had what we were really after: two 30 packs of the golden nectar, Bud Light. We visited with Madge for a bit and then jumped into the dinghy for the ride back up the lake after donning the life jackets; not on us, but on the Bud Light.
Not only does the blog keep me busy, but between Rosie and I, it's always one thing or another dealing with administrating our emails and regular mail. St. Brendan's Isle has been well worth the money it costs for joining. We get an email telling us about new mail that has had the envelope scanned and if it's something that looks important, we have them open it and scan the contents. We then can shred it our we save it to our electronic files. We haven't had to have them send anything to us yet. I'd recommend them to any travelers.
Later today we are pulling up anchor and going back over to The Moors for dinner and we'll fill up the water tank and get a pump out. This evening we're going to probably anchor in Pisgah Bay if I can find a spot with Internet service, then we're meeting some folks tomorrow in the local hotspot, The Quarry, for some of the activities that take place in there.
So while we're here on Kentucky Lake, our blog posts will be a little further apart. Reporting on our day to day activities seem a bit narcissistic to me, and we're not trying to brag about how great this is, so I'll only send something along if I feel it makes a good story or exemplifies the basic live aboard experience. Until then, check out the sunset we saw from our "back porch" last night.

June 9 and 10 are Free Fishing Days in Missouri

Leave your worries and your wallet behind,
as you discover nature through the fun of fishing.

JEFFERSON CITY–The best things in life are free, sometimes. The weekend of June 9 and 10 is one of those times, as the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is suspending fishing-permit requirements for those two days.

MDC designates the weekend after the first Monday in June as Free Fishing Days in Missouri each year. The idea is to encourage people to explore the state’s fishing opportunities without having to purchase permits, trout stamps or trout park daily tags.

Fishing is a lifetime sport, something equally doable whether you are 9 or 90. Free Fishing Days is designed to encourage lapsed anglers and first-time fishers to wet a line at one of Missouri’s more than 300 MDC-owned or managed fishing lakes, ponds or stream accesses. Carefully managed fisheries at these areas produce an abundance of opportunities to catch fish ranging from crappie and catfish to trout and muskellunge.

Normal fishing regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Regulations are outlined in the 2012 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations, which is available wherever fishing permits are sold, or online at www.mdc.mo.gov/node/6108. Special permits may still be required at county, city and private fishing areas. Free Fishing Days exempts anglers from MDC permit and tag fees only, not parking or other park fees.

Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many offer disabled-accessible facilities. For more information about places to fish, visit mdc.mo.gov/node/2478 or contact the nearest MDC office.

Museum and Riverfront Interpretive Center Nearing Completion

Vicksburg, Miss -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District's construction of the Lower Mississippi River Museum and Riverfront Interpretive Center is nearing completion. The museum will consist of a two-story, 20,000-square foot building attached to the Motor Vessel Mississippi. The building will include a reception area, orientation theater, interactive displays and exhibits and a classroom/activity room.

Displays and exhibits inside the Motor Vessel Mississippi are scheduled to be completed approximately mid July 2012. The Engineering Research Development Center (ERDC) will construct a model of the Mississippi River that will interpret the stretch of the Mississippi River from Greenville to Vicksburg. The model will be located on the west side of the grounds of the museum building.

The museum will educate and inform visitors about the lower Mississippi River and its relationship to Vicksburg and the lower Mississippi Delta region. The museum opening date is scheduled for 24 August 2012.

River Road Renegades Ski Show

The picture above is of one of the skiers on top of the jump ramp.  Notice the ski boat is right in front of the ramp and the skier is barefoot and has the ski rope in his hand.  Well, a few minutes later the boat took off and the skier jumped in and came out bare footing!

Above is a shot of two skiers on the ski jump with an on-looker parked along side the Great River Road enjoying the show.

Above is a shot of the water skiers headed up-river with the girls riding on the same skis as the guys in preparation for building a pyramid.

After the show we stopped in to say hello to the krew at Palisades Yacht Club !

What a view of the river they have !

Blessing of the Fleet News !

Good News!

The Regatta Permit from the United States Coast Guard came in the mail today. Thanks much to Charles and Marilyn for taking care of this.

Been getting some fairly good feedback on the Benefit this Saturday, particularly a lot of interest in the T-Shirts, seems everybody loves the design. Thanks much to Craig Tredway for taking care of this.

Seems John Bloch and his guys have the course changes pretty well covered, Grafton Harbor will also have boats out there to help.

Both Grafton Harbor and Alton Marina have contributed prizes and both are working hard at spreading the word in their respective areas reference the new routes.

Still waiting on confirmation on the fire department and ambulance. May need some help to set the buoys for the runway in front of the statue.

After much discussion with my First Mate Maureen and looking over the list of prizes donated we will most likely be better off having two distinct raffles, one for a simple cash 50 / 50 and one for the prizes.

Bill Kelley will have two of his RiverBills Girls there to sell the raffle tickets. Check out the Blessing of the Fleet website for a list of what I know of so far. www.blessingofthefleetstl.com

Hope to see all of you Saturday

Illinois River Near Griggsville, Illinois

Work To Begin On Processing Plant........

Work is getting ready to begin on the new fish processing plant for Big River Fish.  Located at the former site of the Sell Best Auction Company in Griggsville, Illinois , work will involve the construction of a fish processing area, coolers and freezers for storage, a blast freezer, and an ice plant.  Big River Fish hope to process 30 million pounds of Asian carp for export to China, where it will be sold in upscale restaurants........

Griggsville, Illinois is located in Pike County, Illinois, between the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.  The hot, muggy summer climate is perfect for mosquitoes.  Luckily, the town is located in the flyway of the Purple Martin, a bird that can eat upwards of 2,000 mosquitoes per day.  A local business owner converted his factory to produce birdhouses, so the Purple Martin had a reason to stay........

Free Fishing Days: The 2012 Illinois Free Fishing Days will be June 8-11. For more information on fishing in Illinois, click on: www.dnr.illinois.gov or www.ifishillinois.org.

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Goes to the Dogs
New Pet Injury Insurance Coverage and Other Doggie Stuff

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 7, 2012 — The nation’s largest recreational boat owners group, BoatUS, has gone to the dogs. The association has recently launched several programs for dog and pet owners, including new pet insurance coverage through the BoatUS Marine Insurance Program. Effective June 1, the program automatically includes $1,000 of coverage for injuries as the result of an on-the-water accident, as well as a death benefit, for no additional cost.

“At BoatUS we know accidents don’t just impact your boat and ‘human’ family or guests aboard — sometimes pets get hurt too,” said BoatUS Vice President of Underwriting Mike Pellerin. “If your boat suffers a covered loss and your (or family member’s) dog or cat onboard suffers an injury, we’ll pay up to $1,000 for veterinary expenses, or for final arrangements should the worst happen, for each pet aboard. This is just another way we take care of our members.” For more information go to www.BoatUS.com/insurance/pets.

The BoatUS Boating Pets website www.BoatUS.com/pets offers a pet photo gallery, a collection of boating pet articles, a “Pet Shop” with products such as GPS-enabled dog trackers and boarding ramps, information on canine water training programs, how to earn “merit badges” from Dog Scouts, and a list of pet-friendly marinas. Additionally, a pet message board to ask questions about taking pets boating is available for BoatUS members.

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety also recently released “Foundation Findings #52,” the boating safety equipment product testing series that looked at dog life jackets and was featured in the June/July 2012 BoatUS Magazine, “It's a Dog's Life (Jacket!)

Missouri River Management

Political Pie Fight Centered On Missouri River........

The Energy and Water Appropriations bill on the House floor this week could affect two federally protected birds and a fish.  Missouri Representative Sam Graves intends to slash the Missouri River Recovery Program by $21 million to $50 million.  Graves stated that priorities are out of line, because so much money has been spent protecting wildlife at the expense of people.  He believes that federal spending should be rewound to the levels of 2008........

A Bikeway was opened over the McKinley Bridge.

In 2004, the Great Rivers Greenway District worked with the Metro East Park and Recreation District to make an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to open up a bikeway/pedestrian access on the McKinley Bridge. This project was finished and officially opened up Saturday. They had a beautiful day for the festivities. This was the first pedestrian/bike trail over the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area.

Blue Springs Lake At Blue Springs, Missouri

     Large Fish Kill A Mystery........

Recently, a few dead carp in Blue Springs Lake turned into 10,000 dead carp, and Missouri conservationists are trying to figure out why.  The conservationists took water samples, and were unable to determine the cause of the fish kill.  Samples were forwarded national lab for further investigation.  Officials are now watching E. Coli levels at the lake, as a swimming area had to be closed over the Memorial Day Weekend because of E. Coli from the dead fish........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Smith Bay on Kentucky Lake

Before I get started I must do a public service announcement. Last week I received an email from a couple that have been reading our blog and asked for a favor. Lonnie Dee Robertson and his wife Jinna live on their trawler and support their existence by performing and mostly from the sale of two books they have written. They have a website where you can learn more about them: It is www.welcometolonniedeeandjinnasworld.com.
The book Lonnie wrote is the story of his renovation of a 90 year old wooden boat. When I read this, my first thought was that a man has to know his limitations, and two things that a man must never do is try to renovate a 90 year old boat. The other thing is to never try to dat a stripper. Both things are a lesson in futility.
But I went to Amazon and bought the book. What the hell, the Kindle version was only $2.99. It's going to take a whole lot of books to fill the fuel tank on any vessel at that rate.
The other book is about life on their boat told through the eyes of the eight Chihuahuas that they travel with on board. Yes, I said eight. They do not seem certifiably nuts in the pictures on their website, but evidence is evidence. I didn't look for the book as told by the dogs, for two reasons; one big reason was that the book is described as being informative even for children.
I don't want to read anything that remotely appeals to them mind of a child. The other thing is that I have the impression that the only thing that may possibly go through the mind of a Chihuahua is two things; What can I lick, and what can I bite?
So there is my endorsement as promised to Lonnie, such as it is. Go to their website and check them out. You might just get a different impression.

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

Road Deck To Be Removed From Route 66 Bridge........

Work may begin in July to remove the road deck from the Route 66 bridge spanning the Meramec River near Eureka, Missouri.  The bridge was closed to vehicular and foot traffic since 2009, because of the bridge's weakened condition.  The road deck removal is intended to reduce the weight on the structure, thus keeping the span from collapsing into the river.  The steel bridge structure will remain in place for now........

Jody Farhat, Chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division stated that the Corps is still predicting below normal runoff in the Missouri River basin, as most of the mountain snowpack has already melted.  Farhat also added that the majority of the system's flood control capacity is available thanks to a drier spring than last year.  Below normal mountain snowpack and a lack of plains snowpack has decreased the flood risk........

News Release From BoatUS

Boaters, Anglers: Gear Up for Summer Boating Season With BoatUS Towing App
Easily Get On-the-Water Assistance From the Largest Towing Fleet in the World

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 5, 2012 — The summer boating season is heating up, but are you ready to handle a boat engine breakdown, grounding or dead battery far from the launch ramp or marina? Just in case, download the free BoatUS Towing App to your smart phone now at BoatUS.com/towing/app. If you do have a problem on the water, you’ll be able to summon assistance from the largest on-the-water towing fleet in the world.

“We’ve got your back,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. “Relax and have a great time knowing that if you do have a problem on the water, we are there to assist 24 hours a day with over 600 TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist response vessels across the country ready to go at a moment’s notice, as well as hundreds of additional towing resources.”

The App also reduces towboat response times by using the accuracy of the GPS latitude and longitude technology built into smart phones, and also adds helpful location and tracking features. Since its launch last year, over 80,000 boaters, sailors and anglers have downloaded it and over 500 dispatches have been safely completed.

In addition to on-the-water towing dispatch, the App can be used to summon roadside assistance when you’re trailering your boat down the highway. BoatUS has access to over 18,000 roadside service providers with the ability to safely handle boat trailer breakdowns and get you on your way.

BoatUS offers on-the-water towing service plans – much like a roadside assistance club for boaters - for freshwaters for $58 a year and saltwaters for $149 which includes BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership. Roadside Trailer Assist can be added for an additional $14. Go to www.BoatUS.com/towing or call 800-395-2628 for more information. Boaters can also contact their local tower on VHF channel 16, or by calling the BoatUS toll-free Dispatch Service at 800-391-4869

Kentucky Lake For A While

After an evening catching up last Thursday with Madge Koerner and Brett Thompson, we were treated to a shopping excursion with Brett on Friday morning and we invaded Walmart. Rosie and I usually avoid Walmart like the plague, but we needed to accomplish the most shopping with as few stops as possible, so Walmart it was. The added thing was that the IGA in Grand Rivers doesn't sell beer, so down the road we went.
A few days earlier I had learned that LIttle Johns raceteam was going to be in Pisgah Bay for a drag race over the weekend, so we decided to watch the races and see John and his family on Saturday and Sunday, so we spent Friday packing our new groceries away and Rosie washed the boat. Madge had some girlfriends showing up from her softball team and it turned out that we knew one of them. The world keeps getting smaller.
When Christine and her dad, Jerry, showed up, Brett, Christine, and us, went up to the club at Green Turtle Bay for dinner and had a great time once again. It was early to bed for me but Rosie stayed up to visit some.
On Saturday morning, the plan was to depart at around 10 A.M. and head for Pisgah Bay and the races. The races start at noon and we wanted a good spot.

Wearing a Life Jacket Can Save Your Life

Wearing a Life Jacket Can Save Your Life... By providing time to be rescued, it will help ensure you survive an unexpected fall into the water. An adult can drown in 60 seconds. It takes a strong swimmer 10 minutes to put on a life jacket after entering the water. If you will not wear it for yourself then wear it for those who love you.

Little John's Motorsports Update

Hi Bill,

The Kwitchabitchin boat ran great all weekend and there were no issues with the new engine and refurbished hull. In the semi finals on Sunday, Randy had a better time than his competitor (9.08 vs 9.09 seconds) but he had a slower reaction at the starting line and lost the heat. The Little John's Motorsports team finished in 3rd place for the
Kentucky Lake race.

The next race is this coming weekend, June 9 & 10, in Wheatland, MO at the Lucas Oil Speedway. This is a national race and all of the best teams from around the country will be competing including the top fuel hydro boats that go over 250 mph. Randy had a great showing at last year's inaugural race finishing 3rd out of 25 boats in his class.

Come cheer on the Kwitchabitchin team!

   Chautauqua Lake Drawdown Upsets Anglers........

Some anglers are up in arms over the drawdown of the South Pool at the Chautauqua Nation al Wildlife Refuge.  The drawdown is intended to mimic historic river patterns in order to produce food for migrating birds, as the Illinois River corridor is a major north south flyway.  Last fall, the north pool was drawn down for the waterfowl, but thousands of fish were killed.  The Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1936 specifically for waterfowl, not as a recreational area........

Missouri Department of Conservation All Outdoor News

   State-record River Carpsucker

Fisherman doubles his fun with record carpsucker

One angler has cornered the market for river carpsucker records.

JEFFERSON CITY–Nicholas J. Wray of Harrisonville could have rested on his laurels after catching a Missouri State-record river carpsucker on pole and line in 2008. Instead, he doubled his fun and caught another record fish, establishing a monopoly on records for that species.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) keeps fishing records in two categories–pole and line and alternative methods. The first category is for hand-held lines with bait or artificial lures. The alternative-methods category is for fish taken by other means, such as limb lines, bank poles, archery gear, gigs or snagging. Wray caught his 5-pound, 6-ounce river carpsucker May 6 on a trotline about 100 yards from the spot where he earlier caught a 2-pound, 3-ounce fish of the same species on a pole and line. He was fishing the South Grand River near Amarugia Highlands Conservation Area, in Cass County.
For most anglers, doubling up this way would be a stroke of luck. In Wray's case, it was deliberate.
“I knew both records for river carpsucker were open, so I went for them,” says Wray, who worked a short stint with MDC before settling into a job with the Cass County Public Works Department.
Wray, 25, also holds a state fishing record for a 2-pound, 4-ounce black bullhead he caught on a jug line in 2010. He came within 8 pounds of breaking Missouri’s pole-and-line record for the flathead catfish, which currently stands at 77 pounds, 8 ounces.
Despite that disappointment, Wray remains undaunted.

“I’m going to keep trying for the flathead record, but I’ve also got my eye on the warmouth.
The alternative-methods record for warmouth, a type of sunfish, stands at a mere 5 ounces. MDC now requires a weight of at least 8 ounces to better that record. Wray figures he can do it, but he might have to travel to do so. Although a few warmouth occasionally crop up in his home area, they are much more common in the southeastern Missouri and the Osage River watershed.
Most warmouths top out around half a pound. However, the pole-and-line record, caught from a farm pond in Dunklin County, weighed 1 pound, 4 ounces.
Persistence plays an important role in Wray’s success. He guesses he fishes more than 200 days a year.
“Nobody 100 percent loves their job every day, so you have to look forward to the little things,” says Wray. “I go fishing about every night. If I had my way, I’d go every day.”
The chances of that happening are slim to none. Wray works three jobs, moonlighting in a cabinet shop and cutting firewood besides his regular job on the county road crew. But any time he isn’t working, he’s likely to be fishing.
“I even like fishing in the rain. I work 10-hour days, four days a week. If I get off late I can just go to a farm pond across the street until dark. Of a weekend, I like to go set lines in the evenings and check them in the morning, then work all day and go back and do it again.”
You might think that holding three state fishing records is some kind of record in itself. You would be wrong. That distinction belongs to Douglas Stilts of Wappapello, who holds seven records–white crappie by trotline, goggle-eye by trotline, spotted sucker by snagging, green sunfish by limb line, longear sunfish by trotline, redear sunfish by limb line and warmouth by limb line.
Douglas Stilts beware; Nicholas Wray is coming after your record!
Conservation makes Missouri a great place to hunt and fish. More information about Missouri fishing records is available at mdc.mo.gov/fishing/reports/records.

Sand From Flooding Turns Farmland To Wasteland........

About a year has passed since last year's flooding along the Missouri River, and farmers are still working to remove sand and repair hollows caused by the floodwater.  According to Shawn Shouse, an agribusiness expert and an Iowa State University engineer, it is possible for farmers to repair the land, but it will involve another year or two of work.  What to do with the sand is the biggest issue, as federal permits are required to dump the sand back into the river........

  Mississippi River Shipping

     USCG To Inspect Tow Vessels........

The tow boat industry historically had regulated itself, but now the U.S. Coast Guard is starting to inspect the tow vessels.  The sheer amount of cargo being shipped along the Mississippi River is the reason for the inspections, in order to guarantee safety on the river.  So far, the Coast Guard has inspected around 450 vessels, with another 900 to go.  Only about 1% of the vessels have failed inspection, typically due to age, or fire fighting equipment is not up to date........

The Pictures of the Day... were sent to us by Rick Estes who hails out of Lake Center Marina in the boat.....Y2Katy

Hi. Bill,
It's day three of Mary's birthweek! We cruised down to Grafton Harbor and ate at the Big Kahuna (great food as always!). In pic #1 are Mary and I with a couple who, as I was told, were incognito (picture by Joe Desherlia). I almost didn't recognize them without their pirate gear or ship (pirate mom was there, too). Pic # 2 has Mary and some of our gearhead friends, that just happened to show up by boat. Randy (second from left) is more likely seen on the road in his '65 Plymouth Belvedere Hemi convertible.

YesterYear's River Pictures of the Day in 2010....  was sent to us by Capt'n Brad Maher of the Alton Ski Club.....

RiverBill,

This is a picture from the 1st official Alton Water Ski Club show practice of the year. We will be putting the jump in soon and doing shows on the river and at area lakes later this year. The club is looking for more members for both recreation and show skiing.

More pix can be seen on Facebook under "Alton Ski Club River Road Renegades".

For now we are having show practice on Wednesday evening and Saturday mornings working from our beach at the bottom of Clifton Terrace Rd in Godfrey, IL.

Thanks for the awesome website you run.
