Invasive Species

Invasive Plant And Fish Species Spread By Flooding........

From Louisiana to the Iowa Great Lakes, the flooding last year deposited Asian carp into oxbows and lakes that they had not previously been found.  The floodwaters also dispersed purple loosestrife along the Missouri River.  Purple loosestrife is a plant that alters wetlands and suppresses native vegetation.  High waters also allowed carp to pass over dams.  Vermont also has issues with Japanese knotweed, a bamboo-like plant that was spread during the flooding and clean up work following Hurricane Irene........

Concerns have arisen that lead in the Big River is contaminating soil in Jefferson County, and the Environmental Protection Agency will be testing 256 residential properties to see if they are contaminated.  This testing is expected to be completed by the middle of summer.  Initial sampling has found widespread lead contamination in the flood plain from Leadwood in St. Francois County to the Big River's confluence with the Meramec River near Eureka........

     Avoiding Propeller Injuries

How to Avoid One of Boating’s Most Horrific Accidents By Following a Few Simple Rules

According to the claim file, the accident occurred so suddenly that most of the people aboard thought the 20-foot boat had bumped bottom. It hadn’t. A man on the bow who was seated on the gunwale had been bounced over the side when the boat struck a wake at high speed, and a split second later, he was struck by the prop. The boat’s owner responded by throwing the engine into neutral and spinning the boat around, but it was already too late. Despite a frantic search, the body was not found until days later

    Lakefront Hotspot Destroyed In Fire........

At about 1:30 am Sunday morning, a fire broke out at a lakefront hotspot, Dorsey's Pit Stop.  Eight employees were able to escape without injury.  The restaurant was fully engulfed by fire when the Osage Beach Fire Department arrived.  After battling the flames for approximately 90 minutes, the firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the bar, kitchen and a storage area.  The Osage Beach Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire........

This one got lost in RiverBills in-basket too.  Sorry for the posting delay !

Hi Bill:

Sue and I and some of her siblings went down to the Alabama Gulf Coast last weekend (March 15-18). We went to see the popular river band The Phins play at Lucy Buffett's in Gulf Shores on Saint Patty's Day. Lucy is Jimmy's brother. Sue's brother is John Ampleman who is The Phins drummer. They were part of the Stars Fell On Alabama annual festival put on by the Alabama Parrot Head Clubs. This was The Phins 3rd last stop on their North American Farewell Tour. Their 2nd last stop is in Grafton March 31 at the Grafton Winery.

There was a sighting of a River Bill Pirate Shirt at the band gig worn by a two fisted reveller. Sorry...I forgot my bumper stickers at home. I also sent a pic of sister in law Chris and me enjoying a cold one while the band played.

We stayed in Orange Beach right on the Gulf. It was my first trip ever to the "Redneck Riviera." I loved it down there! The sun and fun primed my pump for the upcoming river season!

Can't wait. See you on the River!

Ernie

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be halting releases from the Gavins Point Dam in Southeast South Dakota next week in order to inspect for damage caused by last year's flooding.  On Tuesday, those living downriver from the dam in Nebraska and Iowa could see the level of the Missouri River fall over a foot because of the test.  Preliminary inspections indicated the dam's spillway was damaged during last year's floods.  The testing may be repeated in May to complete the evaluation........

Corps Releases Final Draft Of Invasive Species Controls........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released their final draft of methods of dealing with invasive species, including Asian carp.  This report is part of the Great Lakes/Mississippi River Interbasin Study, which looks at ways to halt the transfer of 39 aquatic species between the two basins, including non-native algae, crustaceans, zebra mussels and Asian carp.  The Interbasin Study is slated to be completed by 2015.  Environmental groups such as the non-profit Freshwater Future are pushing for the physical separation of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley, citing that it is not only economically and technically feasible, but will also be a step toward improving Chicago's water infrastructure........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

 First Night on the Hook

This should be a quickie post, not much to tell after our first week since moving onto the boat.
We did go back to our condo last Tuesday to pick up the last of our clothing and clean out cabinets of our personal effects and we spent the last night there.
When we left the condo last Wednesday, our Explorer looked like Sanford and Sons but most of the stuff got dropped off with a visit to the Salvation Army and to Rosie's brother's house where we dropped off a "Hope Chest" full of I don't know what, that Rosie has had since she was a teenager. I hope her hopes have been fulfilled by now.
Since her brother lives near an old motorcycle riding buddy of mine, we dropped by to say goodbye. Kenny Olsen and his wife Donna had been friends even before we worked together
Rosie had a doctor visit and we paid our lawyer one last visit, we hope, to tighten up our personal affairs, before we finally made it back to the boat and loaded it up with the last of our stuff.
We have one inch left of boot stripe and Swing Set is about to founder, as we're full of fuel, water, and canned goods. I'm eating six meals a day, justified by weight reduction on the boat, not myself. Just kidding, but why is it that when you prepare a meal, what's leftover seems to be more than what you made in the first place?
Rosie has found a place for all of our stuff but I don't know how she did it. I heard the salon door open several times last night and I suspect that the Mississippi has laid claim to some of our more obscure belongings. Just kidding again, I can't help myself. We don't litter.
We made it out on the hook last night for the first time this season and the wind is kicking up, keeping our wind generators at work. When the wind started up last night the generators kept braking and not making electricity and I couldn't figure it out until I discovered that the circuit breakers were off. I don't know if it was because I did it last fall when I winterized, or perhaps some high wind from a storm over the winter caused it. Anyhow, the mystery was solved and we're all happy again.
Our WiFi signal is decent and is allowing this blog, and we checked our mail, now being sent to our Florida address. It's nice to have the contents scanned and we can shred or save as we see fit. This is better than going out in the snow to a mailbox...way better.
I had some trouble hooking up our printer/scanner, but solved that by re-installing the driver for the scanner. The printer (same Canon unit) went into action once I installed a cable for it. I should have done that years ago because sometimes we would get bumped offline using the wifi on the Canon.
I also was a little leery of my desktop stability even though I used plenty of Velcro and sticky tape to stick it to the desk. I added some insurance by virtue of running a cable tie from the back of the computer through the grommet on the desktop for the various wires that feed the Mac and cinching it down. I don't think it'll go anywhere, and if it does, it's probably Edmund Fitzgerald time and the computer will be the least of our troubles.
Some storms are forecasted for this evening but we're staying out. I'll double check the hook before it gets dark but we've stayed put since yesterday afternoon. I set our anchor watch last night and we only swung with the wind, but gusts have only been in the 15 M.P.H. range so far.
We have to go into the harbor on Monday as our vehicle will be picked up by the buyer then. I'll be without a car for the first time in 41 years, feels a little funny but every trip on the highway just leaves me in awe of all the inconsiderate drivers out on the road and we'll both be happy to minimize our travels on the land.
We toasted the chilly morning over coffee with Rosie exclaiming "This is the life!" I sure hope so after all this planning, but so far, it sure feels like it.

Fishy Tales From The Great Lakes

Invasive Species Heads For Queen's Pie........

Two pounds of sea lampreys from the Great Lakes have been shipped to England to be made into a traditional pie for Queen Elizabeth II.  Since the middle ages, the City of Gloucester has given the pie to monarch as a gift.  Gloucester requested the lampreys from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, as eel-like creatures are protected in British waters.  The pie is for the upcoming Diamond Jubilee; celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Queen's ascension to the throne........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS and Friends Help Keep Used Fishing Line Out of the Water

Dear Friends:

For most anglers, keeping a fishing line in the water usually results with a catch (or at least that’s the way it’s supposed to work I’m told).

However, old used line is another matter. On Earth Day our BoatUS Foundation teamed up with a few friends at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Sportfishing Association and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation to build 600 fishing line recycling bins.

What do they look like?

Here’s a video of the event from US Fish and Wildlife Service Director Director Dan Ashe:

www.fws.gov/director/dan-ashe/index.cfm/2012/4/23/Getting-My-Hands-Dirty-for-Fishing-Line-Recycling

For more information about our fishing line recycling program, go to www.BoatUS.com/foundation/monofilament. The project is funded by a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program.

Next time you head out on the water, what will you do with your old fishing line?

Kindest,
Scott Croft
a.k.a “lousy angler”

Largest Mississippi River Sternwheeler Returns To Memphis........

On Thursday morning, the American Queen steamed into her home port of Memphis, for the first time since 2008.  Passengers were on the forward deck nursing mimosas and bloody Marys, as Captain John Sutton ordered the Queen's whistle blown, and the calliope  played the Tennessee Waltz and Rocky Top.  On Friday, the celebration of the American Queen's maiden voyage will continue, with a christening at the foot of Beale Street.  Pricilla Presley, godmother of the Queen will swing the ceremonial bottle of champagne........

Corps Stands By Levee Breech Decision........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates that the intentional breeching of the Birds Point Levee last year averted over $112 billion in damages along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries.  U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson believes the Corps "jumped the gun".  Emerson's district includes the Birds Point Levee area.  Emerson asserts that the Corps were not using proper maps of the floodway, and made their decision to activate the floodway on incorrect hydrology.  Corps spokesman Robert Anderson stated that a levee break in an unanticipated area may have easily caused a $1 billion in damages........

Hey Bill!

Here are a few pics of the Mississippi Valley ACBS boats during the Cottleville parade last Saturday. Even though we got wet, it didn't matter because we all had boats!

We were also promoting our 2nd annual boat show at Lake St. Louis on May 19th. We had a great turnout last year and this year is shaping up to be even bigger and better!

We will be getting out more info on the show in the coming weeks.

Over the weekend, 9 year old Hunter Stevens and his father, Kevin, were fishing off of a kayak in the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston, Texas when the boy hooked a five foot black tip shark.  Hid dad coached him on reeling the shark in, but this was not the first time Hunter has caught a shark.  Just last year, Hunter hooked a seven foot long shark, but it got away.  Hunter is an ardent fisherman, and even chronicles his fish stories on his own website, sharkboyhunter.com........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee

System In Works To Mitigate Flood Threat........

A year ago, historic floods hit Memphis, and now, emergency officials have teamed up with government agencies to put together a system of weather stations and river gauges in the Memphis area.  The gauges will be used to keep tabs on the tributaries of the Mississippi River that caused the majority of flooding last year, the Wolf and Loosahatchie Rivers and the Nonconnah Creek.  The system will also utilize cameras to see the current conditions of the tributaries.  The system should be up and running next year........

Sioux, IA .....Missouri River Flood Aftermath

  After Flood, River Has Changed........

Last year's flooding along the Missouri River has caused the river to change considerably.  Boaters are having issues accessing the river, as many ramps are silted in.  Last year, the Missouri River was closed to boating due to the high water, but now, too little water is the issue.  There are sandbars located in different places, as are snags and deadwood.  Another issue to consider for those walking or fishing along the banks of the Missouri River is that the banks can be unstable........

News Release From BoatUS

Three Safety Tips to Safely Get You Through the Spring Fishing and Boating Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 25, 2012 – In many parts of the country, people are asking when did winter end and spring begin? Anglers and boaters are taking advantage of the unusually warm weather, but some may be forgetting that cold waters still lurk beneath the keel. Here’s three easy safety tips from www.BoatUS.com/foundationthat will help you get safely through the spring fishing and boating season.
1. Don’t allow the warm weather to let your guard down:The air temperatures may be downright balmy, but deceptively cold waters increase the risk of hypothermia even on a “T-shirt” day. Also remember there are fewer boats out on the water that could come to your aid. Bring extra layers or change of clothes and rain gear this time of year.

2. Plan on how to get back in the boat:If you accidentally went overboard, do you have a way to get back aboard? You may be surprised how hard this can be – especially if you are alone or haven’t prepared for it. It could be as simple as having a rope with looped foot holds affixed to a cleat that can easily be grabbed from the water. The BoatUS Foundation also tested after-market boarding ladders for small jonboats, RIBs and larger center console boats. You can view these tests at www.youtube.com/user/BoatUSFoundation/videos?sort=dd&view=0&page=2. A hardcopy of the tests along with a ranking of the best ladders can also be found at www.BoatUS.com/foundation/boardingladders.

3. Refresh your memory:Take a boating safety course now from the comfort of your own home. The no-cost BoatUS Foundation Online Boating Safety course, which is designed so that you can stop and then continue at any time, includes videos that demonstrate important safety devices such as flares, shows the rules of the road, how to get help in an emergency, and the best way to fit a life jacket to a child so they will not slip out. Go to www.BoatUS.org/onlinecourse. It may also help you save money on boat insurance and meet your state’s requirements for boating safety education.

Captain Fired For Calling Coast Guard.........

A towboat captain was wrongfully fired for alerting the U.S. Coast Guard of engine problems aboard the towboatthat he was piloting.  In June, 2011, the captain called the Coast Guard to report a faulty starboard engine.  He called again in August, 2011 to report the same problem.  The captain's company, St. James Stevedoring Partners, LLC suspended the captain the first time and fired him the next, claiming the captain was not to call the Coast Guard without company approval.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration looked into the captain's firing and treated him as a whistleblower.  St. James Stevedoring was fined $245,000 for violations of the Seaman's Protection Act.  Riverboat captains are required to report lost engines to the Coast Guard........

Farmers Believe Corps Contributing To Erosion........

Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a public meeting at Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitor's Center in which they discussed a proposal to expand shallow water habitat on a nearby island.  Farmers present at the meeting questioned the Corps about the repair of notches in dikes along the river.  The dikes are intended to keep the channel open and self cleaning, and a few years ago, notches were added to maintain habitat for the pallid sturgeon.  Farmers are claiming that the notches have caused erosion issues along the banks, levees and farmer's fields........

Construction on the Chain of Rocks Pump Station

Seven grueling hours in the sun, 32 trucks of material, and 265-cubic yards of concrete marked the start of construction on the Chain of Rocks Pump Station April 18 along the Chain of Rocks Levee near Granite City, Ill.

The pump station is one feature of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District’s project to correct design deficiencies and provide the Chain of Rocks levee with the authorized level of protection of 54-feet on the St. Louis gage.

Located in Madison County, the federally owned and operated levee is one segment of the Metro East Sanitary District Levee System.

The construction of the pump station marks another milestone in the completion of the Corps’ project to reduce risk to those living and working in the Metro East.

How To Install Electrical Items
Without Burning Your Boat To The Waterline

Adding electrical equipment is sometimes more than just running a new circuit.

How electrical items are wired and installed in your boat is incredibly important, yet this job is often tackled by inexperienced do-it-yourselfers.
While we love working on our own boats and encourage others to do so, let’s spell one thing out, right up-front: if you have any doubts about what you’re doing, leave these jobs to a professional marine electrician.

Hi Bill,

Bruce and I took advantage of a couple of the beautiful days last by taking a boat ride up river and staying overnight near Two Rivers Marina. This is Becky from the marina. Great Gal. We arrived at quitting time so she drove us in her personal vehicle, over the bridge and took time out to give us a tour of the town! Talk about personal service! Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

We've Officially Moved Onto Swing Set

It's been nearly a week since my last post and a lot has happened, the least of which was that last Friday was Rosie's last day at work, and after I picked her up we headed to the boat with the car loaded up with some of the last things we needed aboard and we officially moved in.

The desktop computer was the key item brought on board that validated our permanent move. In the picture above you can see how much room it takes up on the desk, partially hiding the opening port behind it, but only partially; I can still reach around to open the port when necessary. I don't know how much salty sea air I want blowing in on the computer anyway. The computer is attached with lots of Velcro and I will also fasten it down with another method I devised before we travel.
The cabinet just to the left of the knee space houses our WiFi printer on a slide out tray on the top, and a hanging file for important papers on the bottom. I used some plastic plumbing strap to secure our external hard drive to the bottom of the desk above the printer which made for a neat installation. I have all of our charging and linking cords here all in one place, plugged into a power strip with a switch so that when the switch is off, no power drain occurs on those little items that seem to draw no electricity, but added up, they do.
We had a nice celebratory dinner and while I was installing the computer, Rosie was organizing the spaces for our clothes when some friends stopped by with a parting gift. Steve and Sue brought a cooler full of home made sausage that Steve makes in various styles. We have very limited freezer space, but the vacuum bagged packages are small, and we knew that Steve was going to supply us with his delicious sausage so we saved room. The trick will be to not use up the supply before we shove off in a couple of weeks.
We claimed the entire evening a success once I fired up the iMac and was able to hook up an Internet connection via our personal WiFi on the boat, and even better when we connected to the free WiFi here at the Duck Club. AT&T claims thousands of free WiFi hotspots all over North America and we intend to find them and save data transfer charges on the on board hotspot.
Friday night only topped off a very busy week. Some of our friends had claimed that we were unusually scarce, given that not many emails went out, and our facebook presence was slim.
All the work in the engine room is complete for the time being. I picked up our new fresh water pump at St. Charles Boat and Motor last Wednesday and armed with ample supplies from Lowe's, began to re plumb both fresh water pumps. I made the mistake of using a lot of the old compression fittings and although there were few right angles evident in my work, I rationalized that not many people would bear witness to my handiwork and decided to let form follow function. Function is the key here: but when I switched on one of the pumps to test my work it looked like the fountains in front of Union Station down in the engine room. I also found that the circuit breaker was tripping as the pressure built up, and discovered that my two new pumps now had undersized circuit breakers and the two 10 AMP breakers had to be replaced with two 15 AMP breakers.
I set to the task of fixing one leak at a time and was able to contain the majority of the leaks before I became just too tired to continue. Climbing in and out of the engine room took its toll, and as I took a misstep, I grabbed the engine room hatch and caught myself, but not before I broke one strut on the hatch, and tore the bracket from the other one clean from the fiberglass. I declared my work done for the day, gathered up Holly and made the drive back to the city to pick up Rosie from work, and like Vivian Leigh, vowed that "tomorrow is another day", but only after stopping by Bloch Marine where Karen was able to find the two 15 AMP breakers that I would need for the two fresh water pumps.
I really don't like crappy jobs, and I like to think I'm better than that, so on Thursday morning I decided that I was going to the boat and do the job right or not come home. We left Holly in her well appointed room at the condo and I dropped off Rosie for her next to last day at work. I stormed into Lowe's with a long list of supplies to obtain; I was on a mission and was not to be denied.
I had read a post from a fellow blogger that had replaced the plumbing on his boat and had used PEX fittings and was pleased with the result, so I armed myself with enough of those fittings to replaced nearly all that I had installed on the previous day, practically redoing my previous work. I popped in the two new circuit breakers and fired up the pumps. I found one small leak as a result of not seating one of the fittings properly and after fixing that, declared the job a success.
I then set in to fix the struts on the engine room hatch. I had four spare struts, taken from the bunks in the second stateroom when I tore them out to build the office/NAV station. Where the bracket had broken through the fiberglass I fashion a bigger bracket from some angle aluminum I had, pop riveted the new bracket to a meatier section of the fiberglass around the hatch, and then pop riveted the strut bracket to the new aluminum. The new fabrication left this strut and bracket stronger than the original installation from Sea Ray.
I called Rosie and told her she didn't have to take the train back to the condo and that I'd pick her up after work on my way back to city. That evening after dinner, I relaxed in the glow of a successful job and Rosie vacuum bagged more clothes for us to take back to Swing Set the next day. On Friday I dropped off yet another load of clothing at the Salvation Army before picking up Rosie and that brings us back to the beginning of this story.
For the time being, our time aboard is spent moving stuff from one spot to another, trying to find the perfect fit for all the things we deem necessary for life aboard. Solutions to problems pop into my head as we go, and I list my ideas on my iPhone and make use of them as we embark on our shopping trips. Last Saturday morning was no exception and we were both engaged in getting Swing Set "ship shape". By mid afternoon we called a halt to work and started in on our plan for play for the rest of the day.
We had accepted an invitation weeks ago for what has become an annual "Spring Fling" at one of the prettiest marinas up here on the Alton Pool, Lake Center. Mark and Jennie Foppe, along with Phil Steimel, are harbor residents at Lake Center and were hosts of the party this year.
We arrived about a half hour after the scheduled start, but it was obvious that the party had been underway for a while already. Mark, Cliff and Brett were already busy frying fresh fish and giving out samples; the food tables were filling up with pot luck offerings and I heard beers cans popping all over the place.
If no one got something good to eat it was their own fault; a band played into the night and the bonfire was a welcome addition to a chilly evening. The fore casted rain held off and the party was a huge success, I'll wager that the approximate 200 folks in attendance will double for next year as word gets out. We were the humble recipients of many hugs and kisses for our upcoming departure, as well as many compliments regarding the blog. We know we are doing the right thing when so many people tell us that our plan is shared by so many, if not only as a dream. We'll do our best to live up to expectations from so many friends.
We got a slow start on Sunday morning, and we had gotten some invitations to join friends out on the hook for the afternoon, but the skies and temperature were not really cooperating. I had gotten a brain storm the previous day to solve one of the problems we had in regard to Holly's "potty area" and I was anxious to acquire the components to solve the issue.
We had purchase a smaller potty pad holder similar to the one we use at the condo and placed it in the second shower in "Holly's room" on the boat. Once the pads are clamped into the holder, a lot of plastic surrounds the pad and what results is a lot of area for a mess to be made and for Holly to make mistakes. My revelation was to remove the holder altogether and purchase some snack chip holders from the Dollar Store and use double stick tape to attach the clips to the floor in the shower at four points to enable a solid and quick mount for the potty pads. The mounting is waterproof and will only require us to grab the shower head for a quick rinse of the shower stall floor as needed.
You can see the white clips here in the picture as Holly shows off her form, only we are working on her habit of "hanging out" in her bathroom area instead of just using it and vacating it. Once we get her to drink out of the toilet and change the potty pad herself, our problems are over.
The trip to Dollar General for three dollars worth of chip clips resulted in checking out with a chock full shopping cart to the tune of $124. A stop at Lowe's for some more "necessities" and another to Aldis tabbed up to about $250 for the afternoon. The weather remained chilly and the sky threatening, so we felt no remorse for not wasting our day at play. We spent the waining afternoon stocking our cabinets with canned goods we had acquired and shuffling yet more items from one place to another in order to reach the nirvana of ultimate organization that we are seeking. I'll let you know when we arrive.
Our shopping excursions are nearly complete for the time being. In a week, our vehicle will be picked up by the purchaser, a deal was struck two months ago, the stipulation that we could keep the vehicle until May 1st. We had received numerous offers for vehicle use from several friends over the past few days, so it's good to know we have wheels if we need them before we go.
We'll leave the slip by the 1st also, as the rent on our slip will cease at the end of this month. We paid up the rent and our electric for the last seven months and are free to go when we're ready. We are turning over the job of selling our condo to a new agent that we hired last week. We have a strong lead from some out of town buyers, but won't keep waiting. One week turns into another, and we don't want to miss exploring the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers for the summer before making Florida by September or so. We also turned over a key to a resident "handy man" at our condominium complex. He'll check on the condo once a week to ensure everything is in order and make any necessary light bulb changes, etc., until we eventually sell, sooner than later, we hope.
When I complete this blog, my plan for the day is to organize the dock box on the bridge and finish plumbing the water maker, both entail working outside and it's bit brisk out there this morning. I've been itching to write this post and now that it's done, I have to admit that I've made a nice comfy spot in our second stateroom to use the computer and stay out of Rosie's way for a bit once in a while.
Tomorrow we head back to the city for a doctor's visit for Rosie, as well as a visit to our lawyer's office to fine tune some legal matters. We'll make one more trip to the condo to pick up yet more clothes and button up what was our home for the last 12 years. Not sure where we'll put all these clothes, or when we plan on wearing them, but it's a good thing we raised the bottom paint on the boat when we had her painted a couple of weeks ago, but we're inching closer to the "full mark" on Swing Set's hull.

    Brunswick's Credit Rating Increased........

Recently, Moody's Investors Services upgraded Brunswick Corp's Corporate Family Rating from B1 to Ba3 thanks to dramatic improvements to their operating performance and credit metrics, and Moody's expectation that Brunswick will continue to improve.  Kevin Cassidy, Moody's senior credit officer stated that continued demand for aluminum vessels and pontoons, fewer used boats for sale, and the increasing age of licensed boats will drive up demand for new fiberglass boats in the future........

Got Juice?
Lessons Learned From Your Battery

If the power you're expecting unexpectedly disappears, there's a reason why

After a pleasant day-long stay aboard his 30-foot Sea Ray in Barnegat Bay, member Mike Lithgow went to start his engine, only to hear a "click" instead of a healthy whir. He thought it was strange that the boat had been plugged in all week and yet the batteries were dead after only a few hours. A jump-start from TowBoatUS got him back to the dock. He replaced the batteries.

The next time he went to use the boat, he noticed an unpleasant odor, but couldn't find the source

Heavy Weather Training

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Coast Guardsmen aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Rochester took advantage of the gale-force winds and high waves, which were up to 14 feet, by conducting heavy-weather training in the Genesee River April 23, 2012. The training is vital for Coast Guardmen to maintain boatcrew certifications and to be prepared to respond to emergencies in similar conditions.

Check out the Riverbills.com bumper sticker she carries at the marina!
