River Bill:

It was a wonderful weekend out on the river! (4-01-12)  When I'm not on the water, I teach English to foreign students. This weekend, I invited one of my students from South Korea out on our boat. She stayed out with us all day. When I asked what she thought about it, she said, "It's like a dream!" I think she is definitely hooked on the river! We hope you and everyone else enjoyed the weather!

Call Of Nature Causes Houseboat Wreck........

On Saturday morning, Chad Robson and William Lilenthal were taking an unauthorized cruise in John Eakle's 65 foot houseboat, when Robson has to answer the call of nature.  Instead of using the vessel's head, Robson headed to the stern of the vessel, leaving Lilenthal at the helm.  Lilenthal was unable to avoid piloting the houseboat over the dam at Creve Coeur.  Apparently, the duo were drunk, and took the houseboat without Eakle's permission.  Eakle was the former harbormaster at EastPort Marina........

    Mercury Offers Ethanol Survival Tips........

It has been many years since E10 gasahol became widely available, and BoatUS has gotten several hundred emails and calls about troubles with older boat motors, especially outboards.  BoatUS contacted Ed Alyanak and Frank Kelley from Mercury Marine, who offered several tips for making older motors deal with the ethanol.  They recommend replacing hoses, o-rings, plastic and rubber carburetor parts, and clean out the fuel tank........

Boat Crashes Into Dock, Lightning To Blame........

Late Saturday morning, an unidentified man is blaming lightning for causing his collision with a dock.  The man stated that he was fishing when a thunderstorm rolled in, sending him running for the dock.  The man added that lightning struck near his boat as he was entering his cove, stunning and blinding him, sending the 20 foot Pro-Craft into a neighbor's dock.  The man was reportedly uninjured, but the boat and dock did not fare as well........

Recovery Efforts From '11 Flood Still Underway........

Even as the 2012 flood season is approaching, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on reinforcing levees damaged during the flooding of 2011.  Last year's flooding was the worst in Mississippi state history.  In addition to the levee work, several other projects are being worked on.  The old train depot is being renovated, after it had up to 5 feet of water in it.  A river museum is currently under construction nearby........

Mission Clean Stream
WhenSaturday, Apr 14, 2012

Description- - 8:30 am –
On Saturday April 14, volunteers from St. Charles County, Greenway Network, and the communities of Cottleville, Dardenne Prairie, Lake St. Louis, O’Fallon, St. Charles and Wentzville will need your help to remove trash from local streams and lakes. Since inception, the event has taken on a whole new meaning, and name. Mission: Clean Stream started as a joint effort to pick up some litter from publicly accessible creek areas. Today, Mission: Clean Stream has evolved into a challenge, or charge, for many to do some serious damage to the amount of trash in our waterways in a very short amount of time. Last year, roughly 1,012 volunteers pulled almost 25,000 pounds of trash from Dardenne, Peruque, Belleau, Spencer and Cole Creeks in a little over three hours!

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Foundation President Chris Edmonston Accepts Appointments

Ensuring That the Boater's Voice is Heard

ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 9, 2012 — BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water President Chris Edmonston was recently appointed to several prestigious boating and fishing organizations. Formerly a member-at-large of the National Safe Boating Council, Edmonston has accepted the position of Vice Chair. The Maryland native also received an appointment to the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ (NASBLA) Education Standards Panel. Additionally, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) made Edmonston a member of its Board of Directors, and he also was appointed as an alternate board member to the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council.

Separately, BoatUS AVP of Government Affairs Ryck Lydecker was reappointed as a member of the full Council by Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar.

These roles continue to keep the BoatUS Foundation and the half million BoatUS members at the center of the issues, ensuring that recreational boaters’ voices are heard when critical boating safety, waterway conservation and recreational fishing matters are debated.

The role of the National Safe Boating Council is to promote safe and enjoyable boating through education, training and shared resources, and it is widely known for its “Wear It” life jacket campaign and annual National Safe Boating Week activities.

NASBLA's 15-member Education Standards Panel sets the standards for all of the organization’s boating safety courses across the country. In an effort to achieve consistency with course content, NASBLA established the National Boating Education Standards Panel. It’s charged with overseeing the boating safety course standards issued by the American National Standards Institute.

The non-profit Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation is charged with increasing participation in recreational angling and boating, and protecting and restoring the nation's aquatic natural resources. RBFF helps people discover, share and protect the legacy of boating and fishing through national outreach programs including the Take Me Fishing campaign and Anglers' Legacy.

A federally chartered advisory committee, the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council advises the Interior Department Secretary, through the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, on recreational fishing and boating issues. Its goal is to “conserve, restore, and enhance the quality, function, sustainable productivity, and distribution of aquatic resources that support and increase recreational fishing opportunities nationwide, and to increase public awareness of the importance of aquatic resources and the social and economic benefits of recreational fishing and boating."

    Scientists Studying Diving Ducks........

Currently, scientists are capturing ducks, mainly canvassbacks and lesser scaup, to evaluate how well new habitat along the Illinois River is providing food for the waterfowl.  The ducks are being measured, weighed and banded prior to being released.  Some of the ducks will have their blood tested, which will tell researchers if the birds are storing fat along their trip north, which is good, or burning it, which is bad........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

It's Easter morning here in St. Louis and the sun is just beginning to show itself. I took this picture with my iPhone; we have lots of pictures looking out our living room window for a view of the St. Louis skyline, this is not the best one, but it's the one I took today. What is significant about today is that this may very well be the last Sunday morning we ever wake up here at our condo in St. Louis. Until we leave on Swing Set in a few weeks, it's certain that we'll be staying aboard every weekend until then.
We like this place, but even so, we feel it's best to sell it so we don't have an easy excuse to abandon our living aboard plans. Without a sales contract in hand, we still plan on locking the doors and leaving the rest to the real estate agency to take care of things.
We were going to stay on Swing Set last night, but it's still on the hard at Bloch Marine until tomorrow afternoon. We went up to the river yesterday for a BBQ and stopped by to see how everything looked and we were pleased to see that Swing Set was sporting a nice shiny new wax job. The bottom paint looked marvelous and the only thing to be done on Monday morning is to install the saltwater "zincs", hang our dinghy back on the davits, and plop her in the water.
As I said, we were going to sleep on Swing Set last night to avoid the drive home, but somehow it just didn't seem right to stay onboard at night without being in the water. I may have sleep walked off the swim platform and did a faceplant onto the parking lot at Bloch Marine. I don't mind so much if the same thing might put me in the drink one night, it'll just wake me up in a hurry, but the five foot drop to the pavement is sure to break something.
We'll most likely spend what we intend to be our last Easter in St. Louis here at home. We might take a walk to the market a few blocks away and get something good to make for dinner later; they'll be open with a few employees as it's pretty much the only place downtown to get groceries.

We had a full weekend already: Friday night we went to the famous Fast Eddies in Alton, Ill. Everyone around here knows about Fast Eddies, they serve more beer than anyone else in the midwest and the food is cheap. I hadn't seen Eddie Sholar in a few years, and when he came over to say Hi, I almost didn't recognize him. Eddie has lost some weight and is looking fit. Looks are deceiving though, as he is still running around raising hell. He's left the business of running the bar to his son, Eddie Sholar Jr., and he spends a lot of time in Key West. We made some plans to meet up when we get down there and have a beer or two.
We went to Fast Eddies Friday night for a birthday party, and lots of people we knew came to the party, but even so, we ran into a whole slew of other folks we know just because we happened to be there at the same time. It is a very popular place in these parts.
We answered lots of questions during the course of the evening about our plans; I feel like people ought to be sick of us talking about it, but they keep asking and giving us their support. More than one person has sincerely mentioned that they will miss us and are a bit sad, but are at the same time very happy for us. Makes us feel real good.
Before heading to the BBQ yesterday, and after we stopped by Swing Set, we drove over to the Duck Club to see what was happening. Lots of people were around, some heading out for a boat ride in spite of a little overcast weather, our dock neighbors were milling about, some of them in a recuperative state after a bar hopping bus trip the day before.
We were enjoying their company when a fella and his wife walked over and introduced themselves by mentioning how they like reading our blog. It turned out to be Dave and JoAnn Berg. They have a blog too, and you can see it here on my favorite blogs, and there is a link like ours on RiverBills.com. Dave shared some stories about their experiences living aboard for as much as seven months at a time on their 47 foot vessel, Great Escape. He really got my anticipation level going, and I think he got himself excited too about getting back out there for some more trips. There's no doubt about it, we like meeting people and talking about boats, period.
We took Holly over to the BBQ where she used every weapon in her arsenal to make her presence known. Rosie and I kept handing her off to each other, and even to others, to escape her fidgeting and rude barking. Now, Holly doesn't consider barking at people to be rude, it's just her way, but we're used to seeing her at home all week behaving like a little angel. It was a little off putting to witness Holly behaving like such a....well, like such an animal.
Fact is; we'd rather be on Swing Set, but here we are at home for just a handful of more days before it'll be full time on the boat. I think we'll just enjoy the day for what it is.

How to win friends and influence "birds"???

Harvey asking for lunch

Evening in Tarpon

When the harbor master at the Municipal Marina in Tartpon Springs Fla. told me about a large "great white heron" that liked balona, little did I know this would lead to a great friendship! Yep...Harvey and I became great friends over a piece of lunch meat. Being pleasure boaters, living aboard the Great Escape on our way home from Ft Lauderdale, we were very cautious to watch the weather; and, only try to cruise in 3 ft waves or less. This was particularlly important to us since our next jaunt was to be 120 miles of open water in the Gulf of Mex. out of site of land to Steinhattche Fla. So we had several days for Harvey and I to get to know each other.

Rush On To Fix Levees And Land Before Spring........

Last year, the Missouri River swelled to record levels after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers release huge amounts of water from the upstream reservoirs, which had become flooded with runoff from snowmelt and heavy rains.  The flooding lasted over 100 days, breeching levees and leaving debris in farmer's fields.  Now the race is on for construction crews to finish levee repairs, and for farmers to clean up their land for planting........

Metro East Update February 29, 2012

Complementary construction plans expect to reduce future costs

for the Wood River Levee System

The Wood River Levee System was authorized for construction in 1938 to a height of 47' on the St. Louis gauge in the Mississippi River. Forty-seven feet was the estimated height required to sustain a flood with a 200- year frequency of occurrence (0.5% chance of occurrence in any given year).

Construction of the levee system began in 1949. Record floods were forecast for the area prior to construction completion that would exceed the authorized height of the levee.

In 1954, the St. Louis District Engineer recommended the levee be constructed to a height of 54' on the St. Louis gauge. The 54' that exists today was designed to pass a 500- year flood event (0.1% chance of occurrence in any given year). Construction was completed in 1955, and the Wood River Drainage & Levee District assumed responsibility for operation and maintenance.

In 2006, Congress authorized reconstruction of the Wood River System to ensure the continued level of flood risk reduction the citizens behind the levees had come to rely on.

Reconstruction included replacing or repairing features that were operating at less than designed effectiveness, which consist of gravity drains, pump stations and closure structures.

Reconstruction efforts began in 2007. At the current rate of federal spending, the work will be completed in 2014. The current cost estimate for reconstruction is $37.58 million, which is split between the federal government and the levee district in a 65% federal and 35% levee district cost share agreement.

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the adequacy of the levee foundation, as larger and more frequently occurring sandboils on the landside of the levees have appeared.

and boils appear as something similar to artesian springs and carry large amounts of foundation material (usually sand) with them. They occur when the river rises and forces greater amounts of water to flow under the levees.

In 2011, approval was granted to undertake efforts to control the levee underseepage and reduce the erosion of the levee foundation to ensure long-term levee stability.

Construction is planned to begin in 2013 on 94 new relief wells, de-commissioning 83 non-repairable relief wells, surface water collection systems, pump stations, seepage berms, clay blankets, and nearly 3,000 feet of subsurface water cutoff wall.

Total estimated cost of the underseepage correction measures is $46.5 million, to be shared at 65% federal and 35% local responsibility.

Prior to the Corps of Engineers completing its underseepage studies, the Southwest Illinois Flood Prevention District was formed with the purpose of bringing the Metro-East Levee System to a 100-year level of protection.

This level allows for FEMA accreditation in the National Flood Insurance Program. Where the completion of a federal levee project is typically stretched over several years due to congressional appropriation considerations, the FPD has developed an aggressive construction schedule to achieve its goal within the next 3 years.

Currently, the Corps is engaged in the FPD Councils effort by ensuring the planned modifications to the Wood River System by the Council do not create additional problems with the levee system, or worsen those that already exist.

While the modifications planned will generally improve the function of the levee and the level of protection, because it is a federally constructed levee, the Corps has the responsibility to ensure the system will continue to operate at its original congressionally authorized design.

To accomplish that, the Corps must not only ensure the modifications by the Council do not harm the levee systems, but must also ensure that the 100-year levee modifications provide the best possible foundation to continue to the full 500-year level of protection.

Simply put, the river level for a 500-year flood event is substantially higher than the level for a 100-year event and causes increased pressure on the foundation of the levees. That increased pressure dramatically increases the likelihood of greater underseepage and foundation material erosion. It is important to evaluate if the 100-year modifications can withstand the 500-year conditions.

If they can't, it may be necessary to enhance them or replace them in the future as part of the 500-year project. The Corps is working to ensure the FPD Councils projects and the Corps projects complement each other to minimize the total cost. Complementary plans will provide for a stronger foundation for the long-term and likely result in lower operation and maintenance costs.

Lake Of The Ozarks

Level Of The Lake Up, Then Down....  For Now....

March rains increased the level of the Lake of the Ozarks by three feet, much to the delight of shallow water dock owners, and just as unseasonably warm weather arrived.  However, when the rain stopped falling, the operators of the Bagnell Dam continued to run heavy generation, bringing the Lake back down to 656.56 feet.  Over the weekend, the heavy generation will be ramped down to medium.  The Truman Dam will continue to release water into the Lake of the Ozarks........

    Sunken Vessel Causing Oily Sheen........

Just after midnight Friday, a tow vessel, the Atro Donna struck a piling, and sank.  She was pushing eight barges at the time.  The U.S. Coast Guard sent an oil spill response team out to the vessel, as a small oily sheen has appeared.  Although the Atro Donna was carrying about 11,500 gallons of diesel fuel, it is thought that the sheen was caused by materials present on the deck when she sank........

Missouri River Reservoirs

Corps States Reservoirs In Good Shape........

Friday, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the dry and warm weather during March helped them keep water storage space available in the Upper Missouri River reservoirs.  The Corps is expecting runoff to be about 94% of normal this year.  This can change.  Some flooding is expected on the Missouri River, in lowland areas prone to flooding.  The Corps is anticipating a full navigation season from St. Louis, Missouri up to Sioux City, Iowa........

Hi Bill,

Charles Hopkins, aka "Hoppie," helps tie up a barge which was coming in to
change shifts. Hoppie's Marina on the Mississippi River in Kimmswick, Mo.,
has been a popular stop for boaters for several decades. Hoppie and his wife
Fern are great hosts for many travelers. People from around the world have
traveled the Mississippi River by boat and often visit historic Kimmswick
for lunch, dinner, shopping and touring. The marina is a short walk from the
shopping district.

See you on the river!

 Asian Carp Update

USGS Trying To Selectively Poison Carp........

So far, Asian carp have been resistant to typical methods of fighting invasive species.  Enter U.S. Geological Survey biologist, Jon Amberg, who is working on "Bio-bullets", which are essentially engineered poisons that would target the carp without harming other fish.  In theory, the tiny bio bullet would resemble food, and would release it's poison into the carp's intestines.  If the bio bullet works, the USGS researchers believe the same type of poison could work on other invasive species........

No better time to get yard work done that when the weather is not fit for boating, but then the rainy weather impedes the work you need to get done, but that's just the way it is sometimes. When I say "yard work", I mean boatyard work. I haven't owned grass in over 14 years.
The third coat of bottom paint went on yesterday morning and we raised the boot stripe, or rather raised the bottom paint to come all the way up to the boot stripe, allowing for about another inch of bottom protection. All those additions to Swing Set over the last two years in preparation for living aboard had to be paid for somewhere. Turns out we like the look, and the two inches of vinyl just above the paint will go a long way to prevent those solvent streaks that tend to occur after a needed thorough cleaning to remove water spots due to a long interlude between regular washings. It's something that happens during several days in transit, especially on the dirtier rivers.
Jason, one of the techs at Bloch Marine was busy applying epoxy to the running gear when I showed up yesterday, and Casey supplied me with a quart of Interlux Micron Extra to have on hand if I need to touch up a scuff or two down the line between bottom painting It's something I've always wanted to do but never had any paint on hand. I do now.
If the rain today doesn't hinder them too much, an ablative coat will go over the epoxy and then two coats will be applied where the stands, or supports, are in place on the hull now. We'll forgo the telltale blue for these areas, there's not much to them. Jeff, the service manager, and Jason, decided to paint the hubs of the props; a good idea in my estimation. Barnacles, or "barnies", as Loopykiwi, one of the readers of this blogs calls 'em, won't grow on the "working portion" of the props. As I've made mention of earlier, I'm concerned with applying paint to the blade portions of the props as I've heard some negatives regarding doing so, in terms of vibration, or noise.
Bob Peyman, the marine surveyor showed up right on time. Bob had gone over the exterior of the boat late last week before the bottom paint had been applied and had seen the few areas where some minor blisters had been repaired. I had the interior of Swing Set open for him to conduct his thorough inspection. Bob had some very complimentary things to say about Swing Set and albeit with some very minor infractions, easily rectified, he pronounced Swing Set fit as a fiddle and intended to pronounce her in bristol condition on the upcoming survey. We will be eligible for a nice discount due to the fact that we had our old survey, done before we purchased Swing Set eight years ago. It's nice that people in the know acknowledge your efforts to maintain a fine vessel.

John Bloch came by; he's the owner of three Bloch Marine locations here up on the Alton Pool, just to see how it was going. He knows I'm a finicky customer, and he does his best to keep me happy.
Pete Tully, the owner of Polestar Marina, also took a minute or two out of his day to slip by and let me know that I'd get more work done on Swing Set if I wasn't spending so much time writing blogs. He has found me out! Don't tell Rosie.
On Monday at the latest, Swing Set makes the splash back into the river. I have Karl Kotraba, half owner of K.W.K. Services along with his dad Kurt, coming by on Tuesday and we're going to replace hoses, engine zincs, pullys, and raw water pumps. Actually Karl is going to do the crawling and climbing and I'm going to observe as much as possible in the event that I'd have to be forced into service for similar chores at a later date. I don't drive with my fingers crossed for nothin'.
The guys at Bloch know that K.W.K. works on our boat occasionally, and vice versa. It's something we've been doing since this Sea Ray and us have made our acquaintance. I've always been fortunate to never have to go without someone to take a looksee at any mechanical issues because they were "too busy"; one of them always makes time for us. This is one reason we're getting most of our work done up here in our home port, we want to spread around a little more of our pension dollars among people we know before we become the potential victims of unknown entities later on, which is inevitable.
The minor rearranging of some items in the engine room will fall upon my head next week. I added to the coffers of the local Lowe's Hardware yesterday, buying some plumbing items and stainless hose clamps, along with some miscellaneous "stuff" that fall into the category of "I might need it." I remember the days when anticipation on my part was reserved for visits to the local strip bars. Nowdays, my eyes are lit up like a slot machine when I enter a Lowe's or West Marine.
I guess I earned my keep today, running an early errand, picking away at our address change list, having lunch and writing this blog entry. It's raining out, and it's time for Holly and the couch, along with the Charles Dickens book I'm working at. I might even spend some time contemplating the work I'm about to engage myself in on Swing Set next week.

Japanese Ghost Ship Update

Coast Guard Working To Sink Ghost Ship........

Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard began shelling the Japanese vessel set adrift by last year's tsunami.  The 164 foot Ryou-Un Maru ended her voyage across the Pacific Ocean some 150 miles off of the coast of Alaska.  The Coast Guard cutter opened up on Ryou-Un Maru with a 25 mm cannon, causing her to burst into flames, take on water and begin to list.  After two hours, she still had not sunk.  The Coast Guard then opened up with 50 mm rounds........

Hi, Bill,

We had a great time and great food at the Boathouse on Sunday, We had lunch at the table next to Smash, the well known St. Louis radio personality and band leader who was there with his lovely wife Deb. They were there checking out the place for their upcoming gig on May 26. That's Mary and her dad, Ed, with Smash on the deck at the Boathouse. Smash was very accommodating and a true gentleman when I asked him to pose for a couple of pictures with us.

Then we have the lovely Toni Luttrell holding a picture of the Y2Katy, which will be hanging on the wall with the other boats by the time you get this.
And I had to throw in one shot of me just chillin' on the river.

Check out the next pic.... WiFi at Lake Center! Now we won't miss the weekend editions of RiverBills.com.

Thanks for the website, and see ya on the river,

River Draft Still Restricted, Costs Mounting........

After almost four months of dredging, the draft on the lower Mississippi River is still restricted to 44 feet.  After a ship ran aground earlier in the year, Congress authorized additional dredging funds.  The funding allowed for more dredges to operate on the lower Mississippi River.  However, two of the dredges are down for repairs.  The reduction of draft along the lower Mississippi River is affecting the shipper's bottom lines.........

River History....

April 05, 1998 in River History

Three barges crashed into the Admiral casino docked on the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis on Saturday night, setting it adrift with about 2,500 people on board for more than two hours.

The accident happened after a towboat that was pushing 12 barges crashed into a bridge near the Gateway Arch, causing four of the barges to break loose.

No one was seriously injured, but five or six people required medical treatment.

The Admiral, had no engines and it floated downstream for about 500 feet before the towboat caught up with it and held it in place against the river bank. Other towboats secured the four loose as well as the eight barges that the towboat had to release to assist the Admiral. One barge sank.

People on the Admiral were transferred 200 at a time to two excursion boats and taken to shore. The last of the passengers were taken to shore at about 10:30 P.M.

Invasive Species

Zebra Mussels Disappear From Portion Of St. Croix River........

More than 10 years ago, invasive zebra mussels found their way into Minnesota's Lake St. Croix.  Now, it seems that the mussels have disappeared.  Byron Karns, a National Park Service biologist recently released a report asserting that at some point during the past summer, something wiped out an entire class of mussels.  It is possible that the high, turbulent water that were present late into the summer, may have flushed the mussels out........

New AIS station at Grafton Harbor

Bill,

My son (Nathan) works at Grafton harbor and Joe asked him to install a new AIS IP server. That sounds so cool! Our boat in Grafton has had an AIS transceiver for three years.  Im not sure who you are using for your server but I use a PC on my boat and upload my coordinates to www.marinetraffic.com for free. You can even include a map of the Grafton area on your RiverBills.com web page all for free. I use it a great deal to keep an eye on barge traffic. The only bad thing with my setup is if my PC in my boat is down it won’t upload the coordinates to the Internet I’m hoping your server will do that for me and I can shut mine down.

I often check my AIS transponder before I start my engines. If a barge is close to the entrance of Grafton harbor I will just wait another 15 to 30 minutes for it to pass and then head out. The AIS can see miles up the river much farther than my RADAR or line of site, extremely helpful at night!! If you can get this information on your web site I can see people checking it every time they head out. I know you can do it with Marinetraffic.com’s Embed a Live Map. Looking forward to what you come up with. Keep up the good work!!

  Automatic Identification System  (AIS)

AIS vessel tracking & webvts information for Grafton Harbor in Grafton, IL

HI Bill,

Grafton Harbor has been asked to host the Network Monitoring & Implementation of the AIS network locally. Attached are 2 articles that explain the AIS System. We are working on an additional article to explain to local boaters how this will benefit our boating community. Including being able to check your AIS responders before heading out of Grafton Harbor so that you know when barge traffic or other large vessels are heading our way. This is also very beneficial at night. AIS can see for miles, so much further than your line of site or radar

Thanks so much for your interest and we will send you additional information soon.

Joe and Jan

April 04, 1998 in River History

About 7:50 pm on April 4, 1998, a tow of the M/V Anne Holly, comprising 12 loaded and 2 empty barges, which was traveling northbound on the Mississippi River through the St. Louis Harbor, struck the Missouri-side pier of the center span of the Eads Bridge. Eight barges broke away from the tow and drifted back through the Missouri span. Three of these barges drifted toward the Admiral. The drifting barges struck the Admiral, causing 8 of its 10 mooring lines to break. The Admiral then rotated clockwise downriver, away from the Missouri riverbank. The captain of the Anne Holly disengaged his vessel from the six remaining barges in the tow and placed the Anne Holly’s bow against the Admiral’s bow to hold it against the bank. About the time the Anne Holly began pushing against the Admiral, the Admiral’s next-to-last mooring line parted. The Anne Holly and the single mooring wire that remained attached to the Admiral’s stern anchor held the Admiral near the Missouri bank. No deaths resulted from the accident; 50 people were examined for minor injuries. Of those examined, 16 were sent to local hospitals for further treatment. Damages were estimated at $11 million.

Boat Sales News

Sales Tax Fight Won By Missouri Boater........

Recently, the Missouri Supreme Court sided with a Missouri boater that purchased a boat in Maryland, and disputed paying local sales tax on a boat purchased out of state.  When attorney Craig Street purchased a boat over the internet, he was charged $191.19 in sales tax for the boat, outboard motor and trailer.  Street challenged the Missouri Director of Revenue in the Missouri State Supreme Court and won his refund.  He has yet to receive his refund........
