Burn the Socks

A Mariner's Tradition

Burning of the Socks Signifies

Goodbye Socks... HELLO SPRING !

“The tradition dates back to the mid-1980s when Bob Turner, then manager of the Annapolis Yacht Yard, got tired of the winter blahs. He’d spent the whole season working on OPBs (other peoples’ boats), all the while collecting metal filings, bottom paint grindings, sawdust, fiberglas fibers, and globs of paint, caulk, resin and filler in his socks. On the first day of spring one year, he took off his socks, put them in a paint tray, doused them with lighter fluid, and toasted spring with a longneck beer while they burned.

Traditionally, die-hard boaters wear deck shoes sans socks from the Vernal Equinox until winter arrives.*

Missouri River Flood Aftermath

    Corps Flood Repair Speed Praised........

While those critical of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say the Corps moved too slow in containing the flooding along the Missouri River last year, Hamburg, Iowa Mayor Cathy Crain and a group called Responsible River Management are praising the Corps' efforts.  A year ago, an emergency team helped raise a levee, preventing the evacuation of 1,100 residents.  Since that time, the Corps has repaired five breaches in the levee system along the border of Iowa and Nebraska........

Baton Rouge Levee Safer After Repairs........

When the Mississippi River was pushing under a levee in the Baton Rouge area during last year's floods, over 10,000 sandbags were installed to shore up the levee and keep water from boiling up.  Historically, this portion of the levee has had issues with water boils.  This year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is constructing a seepage berm to prevent water from bubbling through the levee.  The additional weight of the berm will force seepage down and away from the levee........

NEWS RELEASE

Prompted by recent violations, Coast Guard urges boaters to take advantage of free safety checks

CLEVELAND — Following a weekend during which Coast Guard boarding officers issued notices of violation to six Great Lakes boaters and sent them back to the docks early for lacking required safety equipment, the Coast Guard is urging mariners Monday to take advantage of the many boater education courses and free vessel safety checks offered throughout the Great Lakes region.

Just like routinely changing the batteries in a home’s smoke detector or checking tire pressure and fluid levels in a car before a road trip, boaters should make a habit of ensuring they have all the required safety equipment and that it is in working order before the first boating trip of the season.

Of the six vessels sent home early during the weekend, four were in violation of more than one safety requirement and were not carrying sufficient life jackets for everyone aboard.

“Checking your gear ahead of time not only saves you the cost of a potential Coast Guard civil penalty, but far more importantly it could also save your life if something goes wrong,” said Frank Jennings Jr., recreational boating and water safety program manager for the 9th Coast Guard District. “Boarding officers don’t enjoy terminating someone's voyage early, but it’s much better than telling family members their loved ones didn’t survive a boating accident.”

Free vessel safety checks are offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, are performed at the vessel, and take about 15 to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the vessel. Depending on availability of inspectors, VSCs can be conducted anywhere — from the marina to the boat owner's driveway.

Mariners whose vessels pass the inspection are awarded a decal that informs the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, harbor patrol, sheriffs, police and other boating law enforcement and safety agencies that the mariner’s boat was found to be in full compliance with all federal and state boating laws during a safety check for that year. Additionally, many insurance agencies offer discounts for vessel owners who undergo annual vessel safety checks.

If a vessel does not pass the safety check, a citation or notice of violation is NOT issued. Instead, mariners are provided a written report detailing how to correct any discrepancies.

Vessel safety checks may be scheduled through the Coast Guard Auxiliary HERE.

The Coast Guard also recommends boaters take advantage of the many boating education courses offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Topics include boating safely, sailing and boating skills and seamanship, navigation by chart and GPS, paddlesports safety, operating a personal watercraft, and boating safety courses designed for children.

Descriptions of the courses, as well as where to find them, are available HERE.

Iowa's Great Lakes

Asian Carp Threatening The Iowa Great Lakes........

During last year's Missouri River flooding, Asian carp apparently swam over the top of two dams on the Little Sioux River, and are now poised to enter the Iowa Great Lakes.  Officials are now moving to install an electric barrier to keep the carp from migrating up the Little Sioux River into a small creek connected to the southernmost of the Iowa Great Lakes, Lower Gar Lake.  Lake business owners are raising funds for the electric barrier, as the fishing and recreation on the lake is a huge draw to the area........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Foundation Wants More Butts Out of the Water

Looks for More Marinas for 2011 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program

ANNAPOLIS, Md., March 16, 2012 – Boaters are keeping their butts out of the water - and we’re not talking about the kind in swim trunks. In just the past three years the BoatUS Foundation has helped 117 marinas around the country tackle the problem of cigarette litter, and it is now looking for more marinas to join its 2012 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. Marinas have until April 6 to apply at www.BoatUS.com/foundationcigarettesurvey. If selected, they will receive a $500 grant to cover the cost of ash receptacles and a supply of portable ashtrays.

“Just last year, 43 participating marinas saw an amazing 50% average reduction in the amount of cigarette litter – which ultimately would have ended up in the water,” said BoatUS Foundation’s Director of Environmental Programs Susan Shingledecker.

The program is a partnership with Keep America Beautiful, a nationwide non-profit organization that encourages individuals to take greater responsibility for improving the environment in their local community. With funding from Phillip Morris USA, Keep America Beautiful provides each marina with a cash grant to purchase the cigarette ash receptacles and a supply of portable ashtrays for use on boats. Marinas are asked to install the receptacles, distribute the portable ashtrays, and educate their customers about the importance of proper disposal.

Many assume butts break down over time. However, most cigarette filters are made from a plastic-like material, cellulose acetate. When tossed overboard or washed into storm drains, creeks and waterways this material can last for decades harming fish and other wildlife.

Marina operators also like the program because it keeps their grounds clean, making the marina more attractive. Once the butt receptacles are in place, customers embrace the program. “We had some participating marinas say that amount of cigarette butts is now is almost nonexistent, which helps their business and the environment,” said Shingledecker

Coast Guard issues standard for living organism in ballast water discharged in US waters

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard announced Friday publication in the Federal Register of a final rule for standards for living organisms in ships’ ballast water discharged into waters of the United States.

The Coast Guard is amending its regulations on ballast water management by establishing a standard for the allowable concentration of living organisms in ballast water discharged from ships in waters of the United States. The Coast Guard is also amending its regulations for engineering equipment by establishing an approval process for ballast water management systems.

“Once fully implemented, this ballast water discharge standard will significantly reduce the risk of an introduction of aquatic nuisance species into the Great Lakes,” said Rear Adm. Michael N. Parks, commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District in Cleveland.

The numerical limits set by the discharge standard in this Final Rule are supported by reports from the National Academy of Sciences and the EPA Science Advisory Board in 2011 as the most stringent that vessels can practicably implement and that the Coast Guard can enforce at this time.

Vessels entering the Great Lakes will still be required to fully exchange or flush their ballast tanks with seawater until they are equipped with the approved ballast water treatment systems that meet the discharge standard. All inbound foreign vessels are examined in Montreal by a working group of U.S. and Canadian agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, to ensure the ballast tanks are exchanged or flushed as required. Click here to read about the release of the 2011 Ballast Water Working Group annual report.

Go to http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/public-inspection/ and select the option to “View the Special Filing Document List."

The final rule is effective 90 days after publication in the Federal Register, which is available through the new Federal Digital System at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/.

Spring Flow...Missouri River Near Helena, Montana

River Flow Around Helena Above Normal........

During February, the flow of the Missouri River near Helena was above normal, but the U.S. Geological Survey stated that flows throughout the rest of Montana were mixed.  Northwest and Central Montana's streamflows are below normal.  Mel White of the USGS stated that spring temperatures and rainfall will most likely determine how much water will be present for recreation and irrigation when warmer temps arrive........

Mackenzie Woelbling

Hi Bill,

I thought you might be interested in this and am hoping that you can put a shout out to all of our river friends.

Mackenzie Woelbling, who you will read about below, is the granddaughter of Don & Sharon Woelbling (River Dancer, Port Charles Harbor) Don and Sharon are 20+ year river boaters. Mackenzie, a 3X cancer survivor is such an inspiration to all of us. During her 11 years of life she has had to face more than most do in a lifetime. Now her doctors are afraid that horrible monster may be back again. A young girl named Meredith Sinak had taken it upon herself to help see that Mackenzie gets her dream!

Hi Ellen, My name is Meredith Sinak. I am writing to share with you an inspiring story which I think deserves to be heard. Mackenzie Woelbling, currently 11 yrs old and a close family friend, was diagnosed with cancer when she was 3 yrs old. Not long after, her 28 yr old father Patrick was diagnosed with another form of cancer. Less than a year later, he passed away.

Little ...Mackenzie struggled to understand what was happening. After winning her first battle with cancer, Mackenzie was again diagnosed with cancer 2 more times and she managed to battle through them. However, Mackenzie has recently been diagnosed with cancer for the 4th time. With all the previous procedures done on her in the past 8 yrs there's no way to tell what will happen now. Mackenzie's the strongest, most optimistic person I've ever met. Her ability to keep faith at such a young age is astounding to me. I've never met anyone who can put a smile on someone’s face as easily as Mackenzie can. Most of all, she’s a fighter. She’s so inspiring and I need your help to keep that beautiful smile on her face. Mackenzie's idol is Selena Gomez and I was wondering if there was ANY way you could make this little girl's dream come true by having her meet Selena. Mackenzie never fails to amaze me and I am hoping to give her something back that will lift her spirits She's already been through more than most of us will in a lifetime. #getMackenzieonEllen

I want to get that phrase trending on Twitter and make sure you tweet at Ellen. Invite everyone you know to this group so they can help. Every retweet helps. Tell them to follow me on twitter or attach this link to every tweet. My twitter name is SiNAKonthat_7. Post this link to Ellen's facebook too. Please help me give back to Mackenzie!!

Scientists Look For Carp DNA Origins........

Scientists are trying to determine if DNA from Asian Carp in the waterways around Chicago indicates that live fish are present.  Several dozen samples of bighead and silver carp DNA have appeared in water samples taken from above the electric barriers that are supposed to keep the carp out of Lake Michigan.  The scientists have yet to determine the source of the DNA, but bilge water and fish eating birds are possibilities........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

The Spring That Wasn't

My thoughts turned to Spring this morning as I was walking back from City Hall in downtown St. Louis in yet another effort to get all of our documents in order. The weather here, like in other parts of the country, is unseasonably warm, straight from winter to summer.
This means that activity at our harbor is increasing, something I need to keep in mind. Swing Set is not de-winterized yet. We have been staying aboard most Saturday nights all winter and this means using "the bucket" for most toilet activities, however, like any self-respecting dock rat would do, the males generally utilize the areas between the docked boats for nature calls when they find themselves outside. I was on my way up to the car last week when I decided at the last minute to take care of business before jumping into the car for the 40 minute ride home.
Now, before I go on, don't tell me that there is not a male boater out there who has never done this. I am calling you a liar and a fraud, in front of whatever supreme being you want to name, if you say you have never used this method for relief, at least once.
Sneaking in between two boats is usually fairly discrete, unless of course someone is aboard a boat you are standing between. Even worse if you are facing in their direction when involved in this activity. This is usually not an issue at night; for one, if someone is aboard, they may have lights on. In this instance, you avoid this area. For another thing, at night it's dark out, at least around here, so you can't be detected.
But during the day, it's like those pimped up cars you see on the streets with the dark sunscreen on all the windows; installed for the purpose of "you can see out, but can't nobody see in." Someone looking out aboard a boat you are facing gets a technicolor view of all your hardware and you don't know if someone is in there or not, unless you hear either screaming or loud laughter.
Such was my experience last weekend. As I finished up and walked up to the parking lot, expecting to see only our car waiting for me, I noticed another vehicle on the lot. Yes, it was the vehicle belonging to the owners of the boat I had used to shield myself from any prying eyes in the vicinity. Turns out I would have been less offensive had I stood on the bow of Swing Set, and hummed a tune during the process. However, having heard no screams or laughter, there is a chance that they were in a part of the boat where they couldn't see me. I figure I'll hear about it later if they weren't.
So Spring, right? Today, thinking about Spring got me to think about trees. We haven't owned a tree, much less a blade of grass, for over 12 years. I don't miss owning either. The grass is just so needy when it comes to mowing and otherwise manicuring, and trees are just killers.
My memories of trees always take me to the land of chainsaws, ladders, and axes. I've fallen out, climbed up, got stuck, and nearly dropped on a new garage, trees.
I've never known too much about trees; I know some of the local species, and pretty much which ones stay green all year, and the first botany lesson I learned was about trees, but not many since.
We had a plum tree in the back yard when I was growing up. Now, this tree happily dropped it's fruit all over the backyard, and it was one of my duties to patrol the compound for dropped plums. (I say "all over", but we know it was just below the tree.) The plums were always found dropped on the ground, either that, or too green and still held fast to the branches. It was rare indeed, that a plum would be found by me or anyone else, that was ripe for the pickin' and the eatin' fresh from the twig. I may have spied a comely sample a time or two, only to climb up in order to snatch the beauty, when all I would find was the other side eaten away by the quicker blue jays or robins lurking about.
What I learned early on was there was a connection between an early thaw and not many plums to dispose of afterward. The plum tree would bud in the warm weather, then we'd get another freeze, and I'd be relieved of the thrill of scooping rotten plums from the ground because the tree would bear no fruit. If you have ever scraped a rotten plum from the ground, replete with maggots and powdery mold, you can appreciate my thrill of having avoided it for at least a year occasionally.
Aboard Swing Set, we won't have to worry about cutting grass, or trimming trees. We don't even own any plants, nor do we intend to.
Having just said this, I remember having said the same thing about not owning another dog. One thing, though, we'll be free to change our minds if we want to.

Turn Around Don't Drown: Flood Safety Driving Tips

Flooding is the leading cause of severe weather-related deaths in the U.S. claiming on average nearly 100 lives a year. Most of these deaths occur in motor vehicles when people attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Many other lives are lost when people walk into or near flood waters. This happens because people underestimate the force and power of water, especially when it’s moving. The good news is it is preventable with the right knowledge and tools.

A mere six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. And it only takes 12 to 18 inches of flowing water to carry away most vehicles including large SUVs. If you come to an area that is covered with water, you will likely not know the depth of the water or the condition of the ground under the water. This is especially true at night, when your vision is more limited. Play it smart, play it safe. Whether driving or walking, any time you come to a flooded road, follow this simple advice: Turn Around Don't Drown.

  1. Flash floods can come rapidly and unexpectedly. They can occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, or when a dam or levee fails and even a sudden release of water held by an ice or debris jam. Be cautious during storm seasons, or any time that flooding is common in your area.

  2. You may not have warning that a flash flood is approaching.

  3. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.

  4. Do not drive through flooded areas. If you see a flooded-out road ahead, turn around. Find another route to your destination.

  5. If there is no other route, get to higher ground and wait for the waters to subside.

  6. Even if the water appears shallow enough to cross, don't try it. Water hides dips in the road. Worse yet, there may be no road at all under the water. Flooding can scour away the entire road surface and a significant amount of ground beneath.

  7. If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.

  8. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control or possible stalling.

  9. One foot of water will float almost many vehicles.

  10. Two feet of rushing water can sweep away most vehicles — including SUVs and pick-ups.

The Weather is Warm, The Water Is Still Cold !

    Some Cold Water Facts...........

"Cold Water" is defined as being any water temperature under 70 degrees

Without a life jacket, you can only survive for around 10 minutes in cold water. With a life jacket, you can survive for over an hour before hypothermia sets in.

Victims that have been in cold water require different CPR techniques

Many victims drown just feet from safety.

Most times first responders are not trained medical professionals.

Even good swimmers drown.

Many cold water accidents aren’t related to boating at all.

No Ice is Safe Ice.

Missouri River Flood Outlook

Corps States Flood Outlook Good....  For Now....

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a conference call to discuss river conditions along the Missouri River.  Officials state that there is no chance of flooding in the Missouri River Basin based on snowpack alone.  They add that there is still a possibility of rain-driven flooding this spring.  The Missouri River mainstem reservoir system is ready for spring runoff, as there is a bit more than full capacity of floodwater storage available........

    EPA Sued For Nutrient Pollution........

Tuesday, environmental groups, including the St. Louis based Missouri Coalition for the Environment, filed two lawsuits against the Environmental Protection Agency to force decreases in nutrient pollution along the Mississippi River.  This pollution feeds the "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico.  The first suit would require the EPA to use their authority under the Clean Water Act to set standards on the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous in waterways and lakes.  The second suit would force the EPA to update the standards for wastewater treatment.  Standards have not changed since 1985........

Boat Association: 10 Tips to Get Repairs Done Right

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 14, 2012 -- Many boaters and anglers work on their own boats, but there are times when professional help may be needed. With 30 years of experience dealing with marine service industry, the BoatUS Consumer Protection Bureau knows that most marine professionals do the job right. Every year, however, a handful of boat owners wind up coming to the Bureau’s Dispute Mediation program for help because of faulty repairs or disagreements with bills. Here are ten tips gleaned from mediating hundreds of cases over the years that will help ensure the job goes smoothly:

1. A tight budget is OK: In today’s economy, a tight budget is expected – just make this clear before the job begins. The shop may be able to suggest ways to complete the project in stages. Always ask how much similar repairs have cost in the past and what kinds of problems are possible along the way.
2. Write it up − or take your chances: Get a written estimate before work begins, and remember that it is based on an approximation of how much the job will cost. With boats, it’s not unusual to have unforeseen problems crop up later – so taking your frustrations out on your repairer won’t help. You can always ask the shop to obtain your authorization before proceeding with unforeseen repairs or when work goes beyond the estimated price.
3. Ask for evidence: Ask to get back old or damaged parts.
4. OK to second guess: If you’re not comfortable with the first estimate, get a second opinion from another mechanic or a marine surveyor.
5. Follow a plan: Once you approve the estimate, a work order should be drawn up. Ask for a target completion date and write this into the work order.
6. Keep everyone in the loop: Always be sure the actual mechanic working on your boat has a copy of your work order when the project begins.
7. Get help with the big stuff: For complex repairs, it’s wise to consult with a marine surveyor and consider having the surveyor serve as a liaison with the repair shop. Ask around for a referral or check out the list of surveyors at www.BoatUS.com/surveyors.
8. The payment plan: Understand that when tackling large jobs, boat repair shops often require payments at various stages of completion. Be sure to verify that each stage has been completed before paying. If you cannot be on hand to check progress yourself, consider hiring a marine surveyor to make periodic checks.
9. Don’t be hasty: If you are unhappy with the work, do not stop payment on your check after you pay your repair bill. This can be interpreted as intent to defraud the repair shop and put you in deep kimchi.
10. Know when to walk: Understand that when asking for all of the things above, you may not get everything you want. On the other hand, walk away if you get the feeling a marine repairer isn’t interested in helping you with most of these basic protections that get the job done right. Reputable shops know the importance of customer service

On March 15th, the 2012 paddlefish snagging season will be opening, and it will run through April 30th.  It is likely that there will be a slow start to the snagging season, as water temperature and flow are key.  When water temps rise and flow increases, paddlefish head upstream to spawn.  For those who have never snagged before, the Discover Nature Family Paddlefish Snagging Clinic will be held in Warsaw, Missouri on April 14th........

    EPA Approves Mussel Control Product........

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a dry formulation of Marrone Bio Innovations' Zequanox for controlling invasive mussels in infrastructure as well as enclosed systems.  Zebra and quagga mussels harm industrial and commercial operations by restricting water flow through heat exchangers.  Zequanox is the first bio-pesticide offered to control these mussels without the risks involved with harsh chemicals........

And when it comes to boating goof-ups that can cause a little pain, the folks at BoatUS Marine Insurance have seen them all, handling hundreds of claims each year. So here’s a look inside the claims files for some of the more preventable mistakes that cause injuries around the boat yard every springtime, and some tips to avoid them:

#1 Don’t overload the ladder: At any marina each spring, ladders are as common a sight as channel markers on the ICW. Up. Down. All day long, boaters scramble on ladders to bring up supplies, fix things and prep their boat. Carrying heavy things, however, sometimes causes ladders to buckle. Lesson: have your own ladder and know its safe carrying load. It is also good to never face forward or have two persons on one at the same time, and understand that loose footwear such as flip-flops can snag on a ladder rung quicker than dragging a treble hook over Grandma’s shag carpeting.

#2 Jack stand missing: Painting the bottom of the boat to prevent marine growth is a common task for coastal boaters. However, there’s always a section on the hull where you can’t paint, usually where the jack stand supports the hull. Removing the jack stand to finish the paint job, however, almost always leads to an unstable boat, and using your shoulder to hold up the boat will get you to the emergency room pretty quickly. Lesson: Have the yard put the boat in a sling to finish the last few spots, or ask to have them add extra stands first (do not do this on your own).

#3 Trailer tires not blocked: A trailer boater was working on his boat at home in the driveway when the trailer suddenly lurched forward due to the man’s weight shifting on deck, causing him to fall – ouch! – to the pavement below. Lesson: Block the wheels every time, all of the time.

#4 All come tumbling down: Every boater likes a shiny, waxed boat. What we don’t like is to have to constantly move the ladder while using a heavy buffer on the gel coat. So we reach, we stretch, we lean so far out that the unbalanced ladder now tips sending us tumbling down, resulting in broken bones. Lesson: It’s worth the extra time to ensure the ladder is always on a solid footing and secured to the boat, and don’t over extend.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Staying Connected

We made some more progress over the weekend in our goal of staying connected to friends and family while living aboard Swing Set.
The first thing we did was get an iPad. A new version of the iPad is coming out, but for our use, we bought the current version and saved some money. The improvements weren't enough to warrant the difference in price for us. Although we intend to install our desktop in our new "office" aboard the boat, we wanted the iPad mainly to use as a backup chartplotter. So in addition to the chartplotter capability, we'll be able to access email and facebook from the bridge. We can access those things with our iPhone too, but we wanted the bigger screen.
One concern we had was the fact that our iPhone is grandfathered in for the time being with an unlimited data plan, and the iPad was exempt from that plan. Knowing that we would be primarily using the iPad for the chartplotter application, the question was one of how much data transfer was involved in using the chartplotter. A call to Navionics solved the riddle. We were told that once the charts are downloaded, then there is no data transfer involved in the actual use of the Navionics program. I also accessed the data usage report on our iPhone and discovered that in 10 months of use, I only used a combined 19 Gigs of data, both sent and received, so with a 3Gig per month plan with AT&T, we shouldn't exceed that many minutes.

Another thing we learned was that the Navionics App for the iPhone will work on the iPad, but the screen size is the same as the iPhone screen unless you utilize the 2X feature which does not give the same picture quality. Our Navionics App is for Inland Rivers, so future Navigational Apps will be purchased for the iPad alone.
Verizon has a pretty good plan too, but since we already have unlimited data transfer on the iPhone with AT&T, we didn't want to lose that, or change phones. We have just added a phone to our plan for my dad to use, so changing phones was not an option at this time.
When we had our motorcycle, I used a Garmin GPS unit on the handlebars of our BMW. I also had a bracket to hold the Garmin unit that was made by RAM. I searched the RAM site and found a nice bracket for the iPad that we'll mount at the helm for easy viewing and access.
We are aware that true chartplotting cannot be used with the iPad, as a 3G or WiFi signal is required, one that won't be available in the middle of the Gulf or Ocean. Our primary navigation will be along coastal waters where signal shouldn't be a problem. We'll use our Raymarine GPS and our radar unit to navigate in the remote areas. If this method doesn't suit us, then we'll get a smaller GPS unit to add to the helm for insurance. There is a growing popularity of the iPad for use as a backup chartplotter among boaters. It makes sense to us, plus the addition of programs and apps like Active Captain, Boating Suite and Anchor Watch add to the attraction. We can access those features at the helm without going down below to the iMac desktop computer, but having the Mac aboard will be nice too; I like to write using a regular keyboard.
We solved the question of Internet availability with a visit to the AT&T store too, by purchasing a MiFi Device for use aboard Swing Set. This device uses a 4G signal to provide our own WiFi hotspot on the boat. We do have to be in range of a cell tower, but our experience is that AT&T has good coverage. So if we are not in a WiFi hotspot, that we can use for free, we'll use our own hotspot for data transfer. We are starting out with a 5 Gig per month plan and we'll see how it goes. 5 Gigs is not enough for movie streamlining, so we'll have to figure out something to access Netflix Instant Movies.
We have a Roku Box that we use at home to access Netflix Instant Movies, but we have unlimited data usage on our home DSL: It's not an issue. I'll have to do some research to figure out how to use our new system to view movies without eating up our data transfer minutes, but somebody we meet along the way will have a solution. I haven't even tried the America's Great Looper Cruisers' Association forum yet; I may find the answer I need on there. Suggestions can also be submitted to us via email if you have any.
We're hoping that T.V. watching is not going to be a priority, but we could get socked in by fog or foul weather and need a diversion, so we want to cover the bases. We did add another flat screen to the master stateroom over the weekend. I had installed the T.V. a couple of weeks ago but I wasn't really happy with the installation. There was a cubby hole in the master that housed a small T.V./ VCR combo that we had taken out last year. Once the T.V. was removed, it opened up a larger area behind it that we realized that could be used for extra storage. Last year I made a sturdy door that I had intended to mount the flat screen on, with the added feature of being able to open the door with the T.V. on it and access the storage area behind it. Without getting too involved in the installation process, I'll just say that my original installation had the hinges of the door on a side that required taking the T.V. off of the mount in order to open the door. Also, the hinges were too wimpy to hold the door adequately with the weight of the T.V. added, so I bought a sturdy piano hinge, mounted it on the correct side, and installed a push button latch to hold everything in place with the T.V. mounted and the door closed. I drilled a 2 inch hole in the door to route the antennae and power cables to sockets inside the cubby hole, making a neat installation. We had to use a converter box to obtain channels for the T.V., even though we thought the T.V. was a newer one that didn't require a converter box. But, like the T.V. in the salon, we can get about 16 channels by only using our Glomex T.V. antennae mounted on the radar arch; good enough for local news and weather, along with network programs. All free, goodbye cable bills!
We pulled out three of our space heaters over the weekend too, freeing up some much needed storage space. We'll resume packing away extra clothes this week in preparation for storage on the boat, using those vacuum bags we have. One thing I was reminded of over the weekend was that those bags are as thin as a sandwich Baggie, and the least little poke will puff up your packing job like Roseanne Barr at a dinner buffet, so extra care must be taken with those things.
When we visit the boat next weekend, we'll be taking out the bubbleras we are confident that freezing weather is behind us. After serving us for eight years, and the previous owner for many years before us, we're passing it along to friends for them to use for many more years. Our intention is never to have Swing Set, or us, trapped in by ice again.

United States Coast Guard News

Coast Guard Cutter Northland interdicted 3,532 pounds of cocaine

MIAMI — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland interdicted 3,532 pounds of cocaine from a 35-foot go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea March 3.

Northland crewmembers confiscated 54 bales of cocaine, worth a total wholesale value of $43,254,000.

While on patrol in the Caribbean Sea, Northland's embarked helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON), based in Jacksonville, Fla., spotted a go-fast vessel with four crewmembers aboard and bales on deck.

Northland crewmembers boarded the go-fast vessel, detained the four suspected smugglers, and seized the 54 bales of contraband, which tested positive for cocaine.

The interdiction was carried out as part of Operation Martillo, which is one component in the United States government's whole-of-government approach to countering the use of the Central American littorals as transshipment routes for illicit drugs, weapons, and cash. Operation Martillo is an international operation focused on sharing information and bringing together air, land, and maritime assets from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and Western Hemisphere and European partner nation agencies to counter this illicit trafficking.

"This successful seizure by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland is just the latest of several recent interdictions to occur under Operation Martillo," said Capt. Brendan McPherson, 7th Coast Guard District chief of enforcement.

Also assisting in the interdiction was the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island, a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Key West, Fla.

"This case was truly a team effort involving the Northland crew, our embarked HITRON Aviation Detachment, and the Pea Island crew," said Cmdr. Dale V. Shepardson, Northland's commanding officer. "I am extremely proud of everyone who contributed to making this successful interdiction in the early hours of the morning, and in less than perfect weather conditions. More importantly, the crew feels proud that they took a large quantity of drugs off the streets, and that they successfully completed the mission we were sent out to do."

The cutter Northland is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va. The ship was commissioned Dec. 17, 1984, and despite its 27 years of service in an aging fleet, its crew successfully carries out the missions of law enforcement, search and rescue, and homeland security.

Clint Pinkelman, of Hartington, Nebraska, was out on his first boat ride of the year when he discovered the wreck of the steamboat North Alabama, a 220-ton vessel that sank in the Missouri River on Oct. 27, 1870. The wreck has emerged from the Missouri river because of the low water levels that year.
