   Paddlefish Snagging Season Coming Up........

On March 15th, the 2012 paddlefish snagging season will be opening, and it will run through April 30th.  It is likely that there will be a slow start to the snagging season, as water temperature and flow are key.  When water temps rise and flow increases, paddlefish head upstream to spawn.  For those who have never snagged before, the Discover Nature Family Paddlefish Snagging Clinic will be held in Warsaw, Missouri on April 14th........

Invasive Species

    EPA Approves Mussel Control Product........

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a dry formulation of Marrone Bio Innovations' Zequanox for controlling invasive mussels in infrastructure as well as enclosed systems.  Zebra and quagga mussels harm industrial and commercial operations by restricting water flow through heat exchangers.  Zequanox is the first bio-pesticide offered to control these mussels without the risks involved with harsh chemicals........

New Diversion Created At Bohemia Spillway........

The Mississippi River has created a new diversion of freshwater and sediment along the eastern bank of the Bohemia Spillway.  The breach is five feet deep, and 32 feet wide.  It first broke through on Mardi Gras, prompting officials from the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation to name the diversion the Mardi Gras Pass.  Scientists believe that the new diversion could be a boon for wetlands restoration projects........

News Release From BoatUS

Ouch! BoatUS Names "Best" Springtime Goof-Ups

Preventing Injuries Around the Boat Yard

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 12, 2012 – Let’s admit it. We’ve all made mistakes. And when it comes to boating goof-ups that can cause a little pain, the folks at BoatUS Marine Insurance have seen them all, handling hundreds of claims each year. So here’s a look inside the claims files for some of the more preventable mistakes that cause injuries around the boat yard every springtime, and some tips to avoid them:

#1 Don’t overload the ladder: At any marina each spring, ladders are as common a sight as channel markers on the ICW. Up. Down. All day long, boaters scramble on ladders to bring up supplies, fix things and prep their boat. Carrying heavy things, however, sometimes causes ladders to buckle. Lesson: have your own ladder and know its safe carrying load. It is also good to never face forward or have two persons on one at the same time, and understand that loose footwear such as flip-flops can snag on a ladder rung quicker than dragging a treble hook over Grandma’s shag carpeting.

#2 Jack stand missing: Painting the bottom of the boat to prevent marine growth is a common task for coastal boaters. However, there’s always a section on the hull where you can’t paint, usually where the jack stand supports the hull. Removing the jack stand to finish the paint job, however, almost always leads to an unstable boat, and using your shoulder to hold up the boat will get you to the emergency room pretty quickly. Lesson: Have the yard put the boat in a sling to finish the last few spots, or ask to have them add extra stands first (do not do this on your own).

#3 Trailer tires not blocked: A trailer boater was working on his boat at home in the driveway when the trailer suddenly lurched forward due to the man’s weight shifting on deck, causing him to fall – ouch! – to the pavement below. Lesson: Block the wheels every time, all of the time.

#4 All come tumbling down: Every boater likes a shiny, waxed boat. What we don’t like is to have to constantly move the ladder while using a heavy buffer on the gel coat. So we reach, we stretch, we lean so far out that the unbalanced ladder now tips sending us tumbling down, resulting in broken bones. Lesson: It’s worth the extra time to ensure the ladder is always on a solid footing and secured to the boat, and don’t over extend.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Staying Connected

We made some more progress over the weekend in our goal of staying connected to friends and family while living aboard Swing Set.
The first thing we did was get an iPad. A new version of the iPad is coming out, but for our use, we bought the current version and saved some money. The improvements weren't enough to warrant the difference in price for us. Although we intend to install our desktop in our new "office" aboard the boat, we wanted the iPad mainly to use as a backup chartplotter. So in addition to the chartplotter capability, we'll be able to access email and facebook from the bridge. We can access those things with our iPhone too, but we wanted the bigger screen.
One concern we had was the fact that our iPhone is grandfathered in for the time being with an unlimited data plan, and the iPad was exempt from that plan. Knowing that we would be primarily using the iPad for the chartplotter application, the question was one of how much data transfer was involved in using the chartplotter. A call to Navionics solved the riddle. We were told that once the charts are downloaded, then there is no data transfer involved in the actual use of the Navionics program. I also accessed the data usage report on our iPhone and discovered that in 10 months of use, I only used a combined 19 Gigs of data, both sent and received, so with a 3Gig per month plan with AT&T, we shouldn't exceed that many minutes.

Another thing we learned was that the Navionics App for the iPhone will work on the iPad, but the screen size is the same as the iPhone screen unless you utilize the 2X feature which does not give the same picture quality. Our Navionics App is for Inland Rivers, so future Navigational Apps will be purchased for the iPad alone.
Verizon has a pretty good plan too, but since we already have unlimited data transfer on the iPhone with AT&T, we didn't want to lose that, or change phones. We have just added a phone to our plan for my dad to use, so changing phones was not an option at this time.
When we had our motorcycle, I used a Garmin GPS unit on the handlebars of our BMW. I also had a bracket to hold the Garmin unit that was made by RAM. I searched the RAM site and found a nice bracket for the iPad that we'll mount at the helm for easy viewing and access.
We are aware that true chartplotting cannot be used with the iPad, as a 3G or WiFi signal is required, one that won't be available in the middle of the Gulf or Ocean. Our primary navigation will be along coastal waters where signal shouldn't be a problem. We'll use our Raymarine GPS and our radar unit to navigate in the remote areas. If this method doesn't suit us, then we'll get a smaller GPS unit to add to the helm for insurance. There is a growing popularity of the iPad for use as a backup chartplotter among boaters. It makes sense to us, plus the addition of programs and apps like Active Captain, Boating Suite and Anchor Watch add to the attraction. We can access those features at the helm without going down below to the iMac desktop computer, but having the Mac aboard will be nice too; I like to write using a regular keyboard.
We solved the question of Internet availability with a visit to the AT&T store too, by purchasing a MiFi Device for use aboard Swing Set. This device uses a 4G signal to provide our own WiFi hotspot on the boat. We do have to be in range of a cell tower, but our experience is that AT&T has good coverage. So if we are not in a WiFi hotspot, that we can use for free, we'll use our own hotspot for data transfer. We are starting out with a 5 Gig per month plan and we'll see how it goes. 5 Gigs is not enough for movie streamlining, so we'll have to figure out something to access Netflix Instant Movies.
We have a Roku Box that we use at home to access Netflix Instant Movies, but we have unlimited data usage on our home DSL: It's not an issue. I'll have to do some research to figure out how to use our new system to view movies without eating up our data transfer minutes, but somebody we meet along the way will have a solution. I haven't even tried the America's Great Looper Cruisers' Association forum yet; I may find the answer I need on there. Suggestions can also be submitted to us via email if you have any.
We're hoping that T.V. watching is not going to be a priority, but we could get socked in by fog or foul weather and need a diversion, so we want to cover the bases. We did add another flat screen to the master stateroom over the weekend. I had installed the T.V. a couple of weeks ago but I wasn't really happy with the installation. There was a cubby hole in the master that housed a small T.V./ VCR combo that we had taken out last year. Once the T.V. was removed, it opened up a larger area behind it that we realized that could be used for extra storage. Last year I made a sturdy door that I had intended to mount the flat screen on, with the added feature of being able to open the door with the T.V. on it and access the storage area behind it. Without getting too involved in the installation process, I'll just say that my original installation had the hinges of the door on a side that required taking the T.V. off of the mount in order to open the door. Also, the hinges were too wimpy to hold the door adequately with the weight of the T.V. added, so I bought a sturdy piano hinge, mounted it on the correct side, and installed a push button latch to hold everything in place with the T.V. mounted and the door closed. I drilled a 2 inch hole in the door to route the antennae and power cables to sockets inside the cubby hole, making a neat installation. We had to use a converter box to obtain channels for the T.V., even though we thought the T.V. was a newer one that didn't require a converter box. But, like the T.V. in the salon, we can get about 16 channels by only using our Glomex T.V. antennae mounted on the radar arch; good enough for local news and weather, along with network programs. All free, goodbye cable bills!
We pulled out three of our space heaters over the weekend too, freeing up some much needed storage space. We'll resume packing away extra clothes this week in preparation for storage on the boat, using those vacuum bags we have. One thing I was reminded of over the weekend was that those bags are as thin as a sandwich Baggie, and the least little poke will puff up your packing job like Roseanne Barr at a dinner buffet, so extra care must be taken with those things.
When we visit the boat next weekend, we'll be taking out the bubbleras we are confident that freezing weather is behind us. After serving us for eight years, and the previous owner for many years before us, we're passing it along to friends for them to use for many more years. Our intention is never to have Swing Set, or us, trapped in by ice again.

United States Coast Guard News

Coast Guard Cutter Northland interdicted 3,532 pounds of cocaine

MIAMI — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland interdicted 3,532 pounds of cocaine from a 35-foot go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea March 3.

Northland crewmembers confiscated 54 bales of cocaine, worth a total wholesale value of $43,254,000.

While on patrol in the Caribbean Sea, Northland's embarked helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON), based in Jacksonville, Fla., spotted a go-fast vessel with four crewmembers aboard and bales on deck.

Northland crewmembers boarded the go-fast vessel, detained the four suspected smugglers, and seized the 54 bales of contraband, which tested positive for cocaine.

The interdiction was carried out as part of Operation Martillo, which is one component in the United States government's whole-of-government approach to countering the use of the Central American littorals as transshipment routes for illicit drugs, weapons, and cash. Operation Martillo is an international operation focused on sharing information and bringing together air, land, and maritime assets from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and Western Hemisphere and European partner nation agencies to counter this illicit trafficking.

"This successful seizure by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland is just the latest of several recent interdictions to occur under Operation Martillo," said Capt. Brendan McPherson, 7th Coast Guard District chief of enforcement.

Also assisting in the interdiction was the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island, a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Key West, Fla.

"This case was truly a team effort involving the Northland crew, our embarked HITRON Aviation Detachment, and the Pea Island crew," said Cmdr. Dale V. Shepardson, Northland's commanding officer. "I am extremely proud of everyone who contributed to making this successful interdiction in the early hours of the morning, and in less than perfect weather conditions. More importantly, the crew feels proud that they took a large quantity of drugs off the streets, and that they successfully completed the mission we were sent out to do."

The cutter Northland is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va. The ship was commissioned Dec. 17, 1984, and despite its 27 years of service in an aging fleet, its crew successfully carries out the missions of law enforcement, search and rescue, and homeland security.

Clint Pinkelman, of Hartington, Nebraska, was out on his first boat ride of the year when he discovered the wreck of the steamboat North Alabama, a 220-ton vessel that sank in the Missouri River on Oct. 27, 1870. The wreck has emerged from the Missouri river because of the low water levels that year.

Mississippi River At Cairo, Illinois

Was Levee Breach The Correct Decision?

In May of 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers faced a tough decision on how to protect the city of Cairo, Illinois.  The Corps chose what they felt was the lesser of two evils, the intentional breach of the Birds Point Levee.  University of Illinois researcher, Ken Olsen stated that the levee breach was a calculated risk, based upon prior flood experiences.  There was a good possibility that the Cairo levees would fail as the water pressure was creating sand boils along the earthen levees........

Missouri River Near Winthrop, Missouri

Levee Repairs Begin Along Missouri River........

In December, Congress approved funding to repair flood damaged levees along the Missouri River, and repair work has begun.   The levee in Winthrop is the first of 57 Kansas City area levees to be repaired.  That levee was overtopped during last spring's flooding.  Work includes realignment of the levee, and the replanting of vegetation killed off by standing water.  Spring flood season is coming up, but a repeat of last year's floods is not expected........

Getting Our Ducks In A Row

My blog posts have been far and few between because there isn't much to tell right now. Please hang in there, we will be ramping up activity on Swing Set in the next couple of weeks. We are still shooting for an early May departure down the Mississippi and then posts should be daily depending on our progress.
Rosie has given notice to her employers, no easy task in this economy, but it's a load off of her mind.
We're getting our finances in order and still are trying to sell our home. If we don't sell by a certain date, we'll start efforts to lease it out until the market turns around.
We're headed for Swing Set today with another load of things from our home. I hope we don't sink it before we take off.

US Coast Guard News Release

Cleanup operations in Johnson Pass complete

NEW ORLEANS The unified command established in response to the oily-water discharge in Johnson Pass announced, Friday, that clean-up operations were complete.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report, Monday, Feb. 27, of an oily water discharge from a damaged wellhead in the Pass-a-Loutre Management Area of Johnson Pass.

The wellhead, owned by Dune Energy, was reportedly struck by a passing vessel that was transiting the area during heavy fog.

An estimated 1,638 gallons of oily water was released from the damaged wellhead during the incident. An estimated 175 cubic yards of oiled debris was collected during the response.

OMI Environmental Solutions, Inc., was hired as the oil spill response organization. Dune Energy also hired Wild Well Control, Inc., to assess and plug the damaged wellhead.

There were no reports of oiled or injured wildlife as a result of the incident. The unified command consisted of members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Louisiana Oil spill Coordinator's Office, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and O'Brien's Response Management on behalf of Dune Energy.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The Picture of Yesteryear's in 2011....... was sent to us by Captain Gary Hunt who hails out of he Ivy Club in Peoria, Illinois..

Bill,

It's been an amazing summer up here at Peoria.

I've also been spending a lot of time over on the Mississippi during the week. I took this pic of the river boat, Twighlight, as it was returning to it's mooring in LeClaire, IA. I think it just takes short excursions up to around Clinton, IA and Fulton, IL. This is a beautiful pool on the ole Miss. Great group of boaters too.

Hope the river has finally settled down for you guys.

Don't Wreck Your Spring Break

With spring around the corner, more than 3.7 million college students across the nation are preparing for a well earned spring break. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would like to urge everyone to play it safe while at the beach or around water. Don't wreck your spring break! Following these top ten tips could mean the difference between life and death.

Number 10: HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Position) can save your life in cold water. This position is where your knees are drawn up to your chest with your arms grasping them together helping retain body temperature until you are rescued. Wet clothing will not weigh you down in the water because water does not weigh more than water, so leave your clothes on. Additional layers of clothing can actually help you stay afloat by trapping air.

Number 9: Diving could be a neck-breaking experience, so never dive into unknown waters.

Number 8: Any beach that has breaking waves could have the potential to develop rip currents near the shore that can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. If you get caught in one of these narrow rip currents, swim parallel to shore until the current stops pushing you out.

Number 7: Never overestimate your swimming abilities, especially in open waters.

Number 6: Swim only in designated areas.

Number 5: Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone.

Number 4: Swim and boat sober. Drinking alcohol doesn't only make you do things that you wished you had not done by impairing your judgment. People under the influence of alcohol have drown because they become disoriented underwater and think they are swimming to the water surface, but in reality they are swimming down.

Number 3: If you are boating, wear a life jacket even if you know how to swim and don't expect to enter the water. Falls overboard are one of the main reasons people drown because your first gasp (gasp reflex) after falling into the water can kill you because it only takes only 1 Tablespoon of water in your lungs to drown.

Number 2: Choose the right life jacket for you and wear it. The new inflatable life jackets are lightweight and the belt-pack style of inflatable life jacket will still allow you to get a great tan.

The Number 1 tip that could mean the difference between life and death during spring break: Don't let anyone talk you into anything that you don't want to do. You have a brain; use it because peer pressure can kill you. Don't let someone's actions or perceptions influence you to cross your stupid line. If you feel uncomfortable leave the situation and stay alive.

No one can remove all of the risks, but putting safety first and following these simple tips can help students to enjoy their spring break and make lots of memories. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hopes that you have a safe and enjoyable spring break because you deserve it and your family wants you to return home safely..

Mississippi River History In Marion, Arkansas

Steamboat Explosion Focus Of New Exhibit........

In April of 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded and sank on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River.  Over the next 143 years, the Mississippi River changed course several times, and the wreck of the Sultana is believed to be below a bean field near Marion, Arkansas.  Later in the month, the Bella Vista Commons museum will open its first exhibit on the Sultana, which was the worst maritime disaster in American history........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Holly's Adjustment to Swing Set Continues

I had mentioned previously about how devastating the loss of our last pet was over thirteen years ago. Not only was the heartache over that loss a factor in our not getting another pet, we also had our choice of homes playing a large part in deciding to not get another dog.
We had moved from our last home on the Meramec River to a condo in the city. The first condo we had in the city was on the second floor of the complex, and facing the street was a "solarium" with all glass walls which gave us a great view of the activities outside. An event I witnessed one morning while relaxing in the solarium cemented our resolve to avoid getting a pet again. If you are squeamish, skip the next paragraph.
It was shortly after we had moved into our condo in the Central West End, just west of downtown St. Louis. The area has lots of shops and restaurants; in fact, we had over 13 restaurants and bars within a block each way of our condo. All of this activity made for great people watching most of the time. One chilly fall morning, an attractive woman came walking down the sidewalk, dressed in a very sharp and stylish pantsuit, being partially drug along by probably the largest Great Dane I had ever seen. The obvious goal for the reason of the walk was soon accomplished as the canine moose "assumed the position" and dropped a pile of excrement approximating the size of a football. While steam was still rising from this monstrous production, the woman dutifully whipped out a plastic grocery bag to perform her lawful responsibility as indicated by signs placed along the sidewalks about every 25 feet. The sight of that well dressed woman bent down grasping that steaming pile of dog doo doo with only a thin film of polymer separating it from her well manicured hand is one I'll never get from my mind. What amazed me about it was her ability to get it all with one scoop without it some extra squishing out onto her wrist.
I told you to skip to this paragraph. I decided that we were never going to be that person. Not only was the actual act of picking up after a pet in the manner described a revolting one in the first place, being a place of high activity, the CWE was also a target for muggers and purse snatchers due to a large amount of potential victims present. Venturing out in odd hours of day and night for "dog doo duty" was a little more risk than we wanted to take in exchange for an occasional tail wag.
It was partially due to this window upon humanity that we had that prompted us to move less than three years later. I once witnessed a purse snatching and I ran out in an attempt to apprehend the culprit, to no avail. One night I followed a suspected home invader while placing a call to the police after seeing the suspect emerge from the dark between two of the buildings where only someone up to no good would be at that time of night. I was right in my assumption that the person didn't belong there when I later learned that a man walked right into a first floor condo, but was luckily scared away by the resident. Being witness to other smaller, but equally annoying affronts to humanity, such as illegal parking or failure to pick up after a pet, helped persuade us to move to a high rise where the view was good, but human activities were too far below us to be of any concern.
While others in our building have pets, or had pets, the twice daily trips down the elevator for the trek across a street to the only strip of grass for blocks around certainly didn't appeal to us at all. So it remained until our move to the boat became eminent and the prospect of having a small pet trained to do business in a litter box of some sort renewed our interest in a dog.

If you've been reading this blog at all, you've already become acquainted with Holly, here sporting her new life vest and perched on the stairs to the flybridge on Swing Set last weekend. Holly was chosen specifically due to her small size as a companion for our life on Swing Set, and with good reason.
What inspired me to write this blog was some recent posts on the forum of the America's Great Looper Cruisers Association regarding choosing the perfect dog for doing the Loop. I've mentioned before about how some people cannot make a decision on their own and feel a need to ask others for advice on the most basic of subjects. On one hand, a boat dog is a boat dog, but some people think that "doing the Great Loop" requires a pet that is somehow unique to that experience. So on the other hand, I suppose spending a weekend on a boat with a pet and its specific requirements would be different than spending a few months straight onboard with the same pet.

News Release From BoatUS

Tax Tip: Boat Owners May Have Federal Tax Deductions Available

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 6, 2012 – Recreational boat owners who paid state sales taxes on a boat purchase, or those who secured a loan to finance a boat, may have some tax deductions coming to them when filing their 2011 federal income tax return. The tax tip comes from the nation’s largest boater’s advocacy group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS).

The Sales Tax Deduction
For boat owners who paid substantial state sales taxes on a new or used boat purchase last year, the Tax Extenders Act of 2008 continues to offer a federal tax deduction for state sales taxes. Boaters must choose either the state sales tax deduction or state income tax deduction on their federal tax return — you cannot take both.

In addition, to take the state sales tax deduction, the sales tax on a boat purchase must be applied at the same tax rate as the state’s general sales tax. In order to claim the sales tax deduction, tax returns must be itemized. State sales taxes are entered on IRS form Schedule A, line 5b.

The Boat Loan Deduction
For those owners with a secured boat loan, mortgage interest paid on the loan may be deducted from your federal income taxes. Taxpayers may use the home mortgage interest deduction for one second home in addition to their primary home, and must itemize deductions on their returns. A boat is considered a second home for federal tax purposes if it has a galley, an installed head and sleeping berth.

During federal budget negotiations last year, Congress sought to eliminate this deduction for boat owners while keeping it in place for second home and recreational vehicle owners. BoatUS lobbied aggressively for a more equitable all-or-nothing approach when applying the deduction, and boaters did not get unfairly singled out.

Some boaters may be unaware of this potential tax benefit because not all lending institutions send borrowers an Internal Revenue Service form 1098 which reports the interest paid. Not receiving the form does not preclude taking the deduction. If a 1098 is not available, boaters should contact their lender for the amount of interest paid and should enter it on line 11 on Schedule A along with the lender’s tax ID number. If a form 1098 is sent, boaters should simply enter the amount on line 10 of Schedule A.

Sorry, AMT
For those who fall under the Alternative Minimum Tax, most deductions are unavailable. Boaters are urged to contact a tax preparer or financial advisor for more information.

For more details on the mortgage deduction on boats that qualify, go to www.IRS.gov and download Publication 936 or the Fact Sheets. For state tax deduction information, download Publication 600 which also includes state-by-state tax tables
