The Picture of Yesteryear's ....... February 29 , 2008

Hey Bill,

Here are a couple of photos from last night ( 02/29/08 ) at Kinders. I'm sure you probably have a ton of them, but wanted to send you a few anyway. Two of them are of the general crowd and one is of Sharrie ( A.K.A. REDDEY FREDDY) Mike, and Sherri. The band Rail was great and we had a blast.

Happy Birthday, and see you on the river!

Rick ( A.K.A. Lunatic)

News Release From BoatUS

Low Cost Life Jackets for Teens Available for Camps, Schools, Non-Profit Programs

ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 28, 2012 -- The BoatUS Foundation’s Teens Afloat Program helps keep teens safe on the water by offering discounted vest-style life jackets – at just $5 – to non-profit summer camps, schools, or any local non-profit organization providing on-the-water educational programming for teens. Now is the time to help your group get in on the discount.

Made possible through a donation from the National Marine Bankers Association, the goal of the program is to provide an affordable way to keep teens safe while they participate in educational programs on local waters. Groups interested in getting life jackets may apply using an online application located at www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/TeensAfloat by a March 31 deadline. After applications are received, the Foundation will choose the applications that best match grant guidelines and post them on the Foundation’s website and Facebook page for a public vote in April.

“We’ve received many requests over the years from groups providing these kinds of on-the-water educational programs to teens that desperately need life jackets,” said BoatUS Foundation Program Manager Alanna Keating. “These programs are great ways to give teens a chance to experience being on the water and at the same time educate them on the importance of life jacket wear. We also hope that involving the public with voting helps to promote these programs,” she added.

The Teens Afloat program is for groups currently offering on-the-water programs, such as educational boat trips, canoe and kayak excursions that include safe and clean boating in their curriculum. However, groups that don’t currently include safe and clean boating in their educational programs can also apply if they commit to add these topics to their programming. “Our ultimate goal is see these kinds of educational programs grow – and keep teens safe while they’re participating in them,” added Keating.

The life jackets offered are Type III vests – the most comfortable non-inflating type available that normally retail for about $30 each. Applicants are allowed to request from 10 to 50 life jackets in increments of 10. For more information in including application guidelines, go to www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/TeensAfloat

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

 Letting Go

The definition of "unmoor" is to release the moorings of a vessel. I didn't know that until today, but it's what we have been in the process of doing over the last few months.
My last blog mentioned hanging some of our pictures on the walls of Swing Set. We only have room for a hundred of them or so, but I found out that in our files there are 10,000 of them. Obviously, we don't have room for all of them, and naturally, we wouldn't want to have room for all of them. They are not all pictures we'd want to keep anyway.
I have scanned all of our photos and will begin scanning all of our documents to file on the computer. So what if the boat sinks or burns and we lose the computer? The solution has come in the way of a program called Mozy. We chose to install MozyHome on our desktop. I'm not giving a tutorial here, or a recommendation, but just some simple facts. For 50GB of memory on one computer, with a two year sign up, it amounts to about $5 per month. We'll not need that much memory, but we can add 20GB for another $2 per month if we do.
This way, we can access our account from any computer with our password and restore our photos and documents should we have a failure. We do have a backup hard drive, but should we have a catastrophic event, the external hard drive would be ruined along with the computer. This has provided some peace of mind for us.

I may have mentioned our plans to destroy all of the actual photos by virtue of an occasional beach party with campfire. We figure that a nice fire surrounded by us and even some guests on a secluded beach somewhere, add a cooler of cold ones, and we'd have the makings of a great last photo viewing session before we toss 'em in the flames for eternity.
We had one of these small events at the Duck Club last fall. I make no bones about it; it's very hard to do. But we still have the photos backed up if we ever want to look at them again, but the truth is, we never opened the albums anyway for years. We even had our wedding album unpacked the other night but I don't think we even opened it.
The reality is that we are learning to "let go", to "unmoor" ourselves from our current lives to an extent. Think of the things you have in your possession somewhere that you haven't touched or seen in years; in ten years, or even more. What good is it? I've already given away most of the memorabilia from nearly 33 years at my job. No, it wasn't easy, but people that I care about have the stuff, and if I'm lucky, once in a while they'll see it and think of us. Without cussing.
Just letting go of a job I really loved for so many years did not come easy. Rosie will soon do the same. Especially in this economy, who can even think of quitting two sources of income, two good ones, to boot. But we can't live our dream if we didn't do it, right? We aren't totally irresponsible: we've secured a good retirement income, at least for being live aboards. Fuel costs are gonna hurt, but higher costs just mean more time on the hook. "Please Bre'r Rabbit, don't throw me inna that briar patch." If you don't get that last reference, ask me about it some time.
Just this morning I cleaned out a cabinet full of videos and home movies. Some of the home movies were on VHS, transferred years ago from 8mm film, some of which were as old as me. My dad was a big movie taker. Everywhere we went he had his old Bell and Howell camera going. I used to view those movies when I was younger but we might have looked at them twice in the last 35 years. Those tapes and some recent ones are sitting right now in our trash dumpster where we live. The images on those films are ingrained in our minds, and the people in them are in are hearts. If they fade from those places, we won't know who they are anyway, no matter much we stare at their pictures. All I ever do when I reminisce is get sad more than be happy, so why do it?
I mean, if you're seeing pictures of people who are gone, you're sad because they are gone. If the memory is a happy one, then you're sad because those time are over, never to be duplicated again, no matter how hard you might try. Even getting together to talk about old times only goes so far, I'm beginning to not see the point in it.
This is a big commitment on our part, but we are only hedging our bets a little by providing some backup to our computer by installing this Mozy program. Pretty scary, and not for everybody, but no one is about to build a museum or library to house our old junk, and why would they? George W. Bush has a presidential library, and look at what a waste that is. :)

Only three hooked lures allowed on Alabama rigs in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY Mo -- A multi-lure rig for largemouth bass fishing, commonly called the Alabama or umbrella rig, is a hot topic this spring because anglers are having good success catching fish with them. But while the rigs allow multiple lures to be used, Missouri’s Wildlife Code allows no more than three lures or baits with hooks for each pole and line....     Untreated Wastewater Dumping Into Mississippi River........

Memphis city officials have been forced to bypass untreated sewage into the Mississippi River due to damaged equipment.  On Saturday, while routine maintenance was being carried out, a shut-off valve broke, flooding three pump motors and causing the plant to shut down.  To prevent wastewater backups, officials had to activate the bypass system.  Tennessee officials have been notified, and crews are working around the clock to repair the system.  The system could be up and running as soon as Tuesday........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

 Making Swing Set a Home

I took this shot of the Mississippi River at dawn on the morning we left the harbor for a trip up the Illinois River to Peoria back in 1999. It's one of our favorite pictures and until last week, it hung in a hallway of our condo, an area we called "the gallery". That's sort of a snobby way of saying "picture wall", but the fact that the "gallery" consisted of over 100 photos in an odd collection of frames gives away the joke.
As we are getting closer to the time to move onto the boat, last week I bit the bullet and removed all the pictures from our home and hauled them up to Swing Set.

The sunrise picture got laminated and placed in a frame and I mounted it on a wall near the dinette, but in order to get more pictures on the boat, I laminated the small ones and eliminated the frames and began sticking them to a bulkhead in our office as you can see in the above picture. You might be able to see the laminating machine on the desk, we bought it last winter just for this purpose, but we also intend to laminate any charts that we print off of the web if we want to keep them.

We have very little wall space on Swing Set, but we'll use it up by adding these photos. We have 1000s of photos dating back since the mid-50s, but the oldest is of my grandfather and new wife as they arrived in the United States back in 1908. We have pictures of special friends, our various homes, and the pets we've owned. As much as we are looking forward to making new memories, we don't want to forget our past friends and memories due to the fog of an advancing age. It could be the copious amount of beer consumption over the years, but I'm sticking with age being the reason for my forgetfulness.

Here's Rosie and Holly shortly after arriving on Swing Set last weekend, waiting for the chill to wear off. Once the temperature warmed up, we employed ourselves in various chores designed to improve the homeyness of our little space.
We had purchased a sliding drawer to place in the base of a galley cabinet and after I installed it, Rosie went to work arranging our dinner and cookware to make the most of the space. I mounted a flat screen T.V. in the master bedroom too. It's not like we need a T.V. in there, but as we are selling our home fully furnished, there was no reason to leave a T.V. there to basically give to strangers. It might be nice to catch the weather on T.V. right before turning in, maybe not, but we'll have the option. Who knows, we might run across someone in our travels who needs a television and we can make a gift of it to a fellow boater.
We then both worked on the pictures, Rosie picking out ones that she especially wanted to hang, and I did the laminating and trimming. The placement of each photo was a random process, but we are already getting some good natured grief from friends that commented on the placement of their photo. I responded to one such complaint by stating that if they didn't cease their squawking, their photo was going to be mounted behind the toilet.
By late afternoon, I had run out of sticky tape, so we left a mess on the desk to attack next week with a new supply of tape and another supply of laminating envelopes. The Yacht Club of St. Louis had just opened for the season on the previous weekend, so we got Holly comfortable in her pen in the day head and drove over to Sundowners at the Yacht Club.
By 7 P.M. the place was full of river friends. Some live music by Captain Tim Woodson, along with a limited but adequate menu of pizza, wings, and fish sandwiches, joined by a steady supply of cold Bud Light, made for a full evening of fun.
Our limited plan includes spending a fair amount of time in Kentucky Lake this summer as we sandwich some time there between a trip up the Cumberland River and our continued trip further south and a complete exploration of the Tennessee River before coming back and heading down the Tombigbee to Mobile Bay. We are getting lots of promises from friends to meet us in Kentucky Lake while we are there from our friends with trailerable boats, and others who may opt for a condo on the lake to stay at night between daytime outings aboard Swing Set. We're excited about extending contact with some great people in this manner, and we know their claims to join us are not just bar talk, but are real commitments.
We are ramping up our attempt to get our condo cleaned out. Furniture and most decorations are being left intact so it feels like a home to potential buyers, but we will continue to move things to the boat that we want to keep. We're also giving away items that some friends have use for. We don't mind giving things to friends in this manner; our feeling is that having something of ourselves in the home of someone we know puts us in their hearts and minds, hopefully in a fond way. The most we can ever hope for in life is to be remembered when we are gone, be it fondly or not, but we still shoot for the former.

News Release From BoatUS

Mind If I Borrow...?

It can be a dilemma for a personal watercraft owner when a friend asks to take it out for a spin but it's more of a problem for a PWC owner if that friend has an accident

Last year a trailer boater took his personal watercraft (PWC) to a boat ramp in Michigan and, after a few hours on the water, came back to the ramp to load his vessel on the trailer. Some friends were nearby and, upon recognizing him, walked over and asked if they could take turns with the PWC for a quick spin. Sure, he said.

Ten minutes later, the first guy to borrow the PWC slammed into a swimmer. He told police he saw the person in the water and slowed down but lost control of the vessel. He also told police he'd never operated a personal watercraft before. The good news in this story is that the swimmer suffered only a bruise on her shoulder while trying to get out of the way. The bad news is, this occurred because the PWC owner felt pressured to let an inexperienced friend take his watercraft out. When later asked by marine police if he'd have let that same person take his boat out alone, the owner said, "Of course not!" A PWC is considered a boat by the US Coast Guard so one can easily understand the potential troubles if someone takes the helm without knowing a thing about its operation.

Eagle Watching In The Riverbend

    Bald Eagle Numbers Down Locally........

While the numbers of eagles counted in Illinois were higher in 2012 compared to 2011, the numbers of eagles found in the Riverbend were the lowest counted in years.  The biggest concentration of eagles, 76%, were counted along the Mississippi River.  About 21% of the eagle totals were along the Illinois River and about 3% were found in other parts of the state.  Locally, there were 41 eagles counted between Chain of Rocks and Davis Ferry, 14 between Chain of Rocks and Piasa Creek, and 35 between Calhoun Point to Beach Landing.  The mild winter is thought to be the reason for the decrease in local eagle sightings........

Brandon, Park Ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers explains the advantage of Melvin Price's 1200 ft. main lock chamber. On average around 25 to 30 barges lock through Melvin Price Locks and Dam daily. In the winter the number is around 15-20. In Melvin Price's old 600 ft lock chamber, the avg. wait time was 3-10 days to lock through. http://bit.ly/xgq5KH

Hi Bill,

Two days after Christmas this last year, Joan & I were in Coral Gables, Fl. visiting my daughter and son-in-law. We took in most all of the local sites while we were there.
Like most people we drove down to Key West. It was our goal to check out as many Mojito Bars as possible. It was a dirty job but someone had to do it.

On the way back we spent the night on the Islamorada. We had great food and better drinks.

I have sent you two pictures of the sunrise the next morning. I'm sure you'll agree, this was a beautiful morning.

Here is to no spring floods and warm weather.

Five boats were destroyed, and two others were damaged in a marina fire early Thursday morning.  Several boats nearby were spared from the flames by hard winds blowing the fire away from them.  No official estimates on the losses have been made, but a boater on the scene estimates the damages could cost up to a million dollars.  Officials have not determined what started the blaze........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS: We Aren't Out of the Woods Yet On Navigation System Concerns
Public Comments to FCC Needed by March 1

ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 24, 2012 – While boaters view the FCC’s move on February 14 to revoke approval of a new broadband telephone network shown to interfere with the country’s sole navigational system as positive news, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says we aren’t out of the woods just yet. It is urging boat owners to continue to submit comments to the FCC by a Thursday, March 1 deadline to ensure the nation’s system of global positioning devices keeps boaters safely on course.

Last summer, over 18,000 boaters along with many other GPS users wrote the FCC asking the guardian of the nation’s airwaves to stop plans by LightSquared, the builder of the proposed broadband network, until independent tests proved there would be no interference with GPS devices which operate on adjacent frequencies. LightSquared originally asked the FCC for permission to build 40,000 network ground stations across the country. Recent government reports concluded interference issues with the GPS system could not be overcome.

“Despite the great news last week that the FCC has acknowledged interference issues with the LightSquared proposal, we’re not ready to declare a victory,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “Given this company’s tenacity over the last year, we want to make sure that boaters’ needs are remembered as the FCC makes their final decision.”
Here is how to file comments to the FCC through their online comment form:

1. Click on this link for the FCC’s Electronic Comments Filing System:      http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/hotdocket/list
2. Select “Proceeding Number 11-109.”
3. Enter contact information.
4. In the box that says “Type in or paste your brief comments,” here’s some important points to select from:

· Explain how you use GPS in your life – on the water, on land or in the air.

· What would happen to your business/personal life if GPS became unavailable or unreliable?

· Wireless broadband service is important, but it should not come at the expense of GPS.

· All the studies show that LightSquared’s proposed network would cause interference and that there are no remedies.
· Tell the FCC that you rely on them to protect the integrity of the GPS signal and that you support their recommendation to stop LightSquared’s current proposal.

5. Click “Continue.”
6. If the review page is correct, click “Confirm.” Done!

If you have any trouble, you may contact the FCC ECFS Helpdesk at 202-418-0193 or email at ecfshelp@fcc.gov

EMPHASIS: Troop I To Offer Certified Boating Safety Course

Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces a boating safety certification course being offered to the public on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Troop I Headquarters, 1301 Nagogami Road, Rolla. The class will begin at 12 p.m. and conclude at approximately 6 p.m. There is no fee for this course; however, students are required to pre-register online as seating will be limited. For more information, to register for the course, or to obtain a complete listing of where other courses are being offered, you may visit the Missouri State Highway Patrol's website, www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. Once there, select "Divisions", "Water Patrol Division", and then "Boater Safety Education & Certification". On the day of the class, the "Boater Safety" link also will post if the course is being cancelled due to an insufficient number of participants.

Missouri law requires any person born after January 1, 1984, to carry a boating safety certification card along with a picture ID anytime they operate a vessel, which includes personal watercraft, on Missouri lakes. Any student who successfully passes the course will be eligible to order the boating safety certification card for $15.

 Asian Carp Update

Feds Spending $50 Million To Stop Asian Carp........

This year, the Obama administration is looking to spend about $50 million protecting the Great Lakes from Asian Carp.  The revised plan for halting an invasion includes increases in trapping and netting in rivers that make their way to the Lakes.  Also, there will be field tests of chemical lures that could draw the fish in to be captured.  An acoustic water gun will be tested near a Chicago area shipping lock.  The water gun is intended to scare carp away from critical locations........

Another Man's Treasure

Nine thoughts on the search and the research for parts that can't be found

Whether you just bought an old fixer-upper or still meticulously maintain the boat you bought brand new in 1995, you’re going to need replacement parts. Some are going to be easy to find, some are not. As your boat gracefully matures, finding parts for her will continue to become more challenging........

Public Notices Open For Comment

Posted on the US Army Corps Of Engineers Website.....

  1. FINAL 2012 NATIONWIDE PERMITS: On February 21, 2012, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) published the notice in the Federal Register announcing the reissuance of all existing nationwide permits (NWPs), general conditions, and definitions with some modifications. The Corps also issued two new NWPs, three new general conditions, and three new definitions. The NWPs will be effective on March 19, 2012, and will expire on March 18, 2017.

P-2819: The applicant, Ideal Landscape Group, seeks authorization to conduct grading and filling operations in jurisdictional waters of the United States to expand their commercial business. Project plans include the filling and grading of approximately 1.08-acres. The site currently exists as a scrub-shrub/early successional wetland, located within the floodplain of the Meramec River. The fill is proposed to be gradual as the amount of material generated will depend on the projects completed by the applicant and the amount of haul-off material that is accumulated per project. The project is located in Section 16, Township 43 North, Range 6 East, St. Louis County, Missouri. The public notice comment period opens February 23 and closes March 14, 2012.

Land Learning PN:The Land Learning Foundation's In-Lieu Fee Compensatory Mitigation Program: The Kansas City District posted this proposal and public notice on November 28, 2011. Since the proposed service areas identified in the Draft Prospectus includes watersheds within the St. Louis District and the Rock Island District Boundaries, the public notice is re-opened and posted on all three district web sites. You are invited to review the public notice and the Draft Prospectus for review and comment. The comments should be sent to Mr. Doug Berka with the Kansas City District (douglas.r.berka@usace.army.mil). The public notice comment period closes on March 11, 2012.

US Army Corps of Engineers

PERIODIC INSPECTION OF WAPPAPELLO DAM MARCH 6-8, 2012

Wappapello Lake – February 14, 2012: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake will perform a periodic inspection of the dam, dikes, gatehouse, spillway and other related structures on March 6, 7, and 8, 2012. To perform the inspection, the lake level will be lowered approximately one foot below conservation pool. Conservation pool is 354.74 feet relative to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD). The lake will be lowered to 353.74 NGVD to allow for dewatering the gatehouse. If the lake has high inflows, the periodic inspection may be postponed until they subside.
The purpose of this routine inspection is to inspect all features of the project related to the safety, stability, and operational adequacy of the main dam and appurtenant structures. Engineers from the St. Louis District and project personnel will perform the inspection. Upon completion of the inspection, the lake level will be brought back up to conservation pool. If you have questions concerning the periodic inspection of other topics, please call the Wappapello Lake Project Office at (573) 222-8562.

 Bald Eagle News

Eagle Counts Up, Despite Mild Temperatures........

Even though this winter has been unseasonable warm and the rivers relatively free of ice, the annual Mid Winter Bald Eagle Survey tallied 2,152 eagles.  This is an increase over the 2,108 birds recorded in 2011.  The greatest populations of eagles were found along the Mississippi River.  The concentration of adult versus immature eagles remained spread 60% adults to 40% immature eagles........

22 February is National Tequila Day

It is said that that the margarita was invented in 1948 by socialite Margarita Sames during one a party at her hacienda in Acapulco .

She stirred tequila, Cointreau and lime juice together as a remedy for quenching a person's thirst on a hot, dusty afternoon.

Reportedly the new cocktail kept her party going for two weeks....

News Release

When it really counts, it’s good to be an USCG Auxiliary member

WASHINGTON –.If you’ve ever had a problem on the water, you know how much a friend’s assistance can be.

Put your self on your boat…your fuel gauge fails and you run out of fuel on the open water…what do you do?

Sure, you can call on a commercial towing service, and spend hundreds of dollars trying to get back to your home dock. Or, just maybe a member of your local flotilla has a five-gallon can of gas and can come to your rescue.

That’s just one of the many benefits that you can enjoy as a member of a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla. Comradery. Not to mention doing something meaningful that might help protect the environment or…yes…result in actually saving another person’s life.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers any citizen 17 years or older an opportunity to give back something to their community while enjoying the benefits of being a member of the only Congressionally-authorized auxiliary of a military unit in the U.S.

If your talent is teaching, the Auxiliary offers countless courses on boating safety that are made available to the public for little cost…and your teaching skills just might save a boater’s life.

Or maybe you own a boat and want to offer it for use on missions such as search and rescue or routine patrols that help the Coast Guard by taking on a share of duties that the Coast Guard would otherwise have to undertake.

Regardless of what you do in “real life”, there’s a place for you in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Just call a flotilla in your area and learn first hand what you can do for your fellow man…and how you can benefit yourself.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, created by an Act of Congress in 1939, is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard across all mission areas. For more information on the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a flotilla near you, visit cgaux.org.

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Questions? We Got Answers.

We drove up to check on Swing Set last Sunday, something we try to do regularly during the winter months. We keep some space heaters on low to keep the chill off, so we turned them up a little to make it more comfortable. A mild winter has kept the ice eater from running too much, but a couple of space heaters running even on low has run up the electric bill some. We spent time hanging some photos and stowing some supplies before we relaxed and discussed our "plans".
Rosie and I have taken our puppy Holly up to the boat several times this winter. She's getting used to her new digs on the boat. Stairs were foreign to her when we first took her on the boat, but she is getting better at negotiating the steps with each visit. Going up them is definitely an easier task than going down. She seems to be right at home with her new "potty place" in the shower stall of the day head; it's outfitted with a smaller version of a potty pad holder that she has at home. Next month she goes in for her surgery to make her an equal in the "spay and neuter" department with the rest of her crew members. (We can all set together and stare into space for hours at a time.) She should be healed up and accustomed to life aboard her new home by the time we cast off.
We have a friend in Florida who has just been introduced to our blog and who had a whole list of questions for us in a recent email. Some of the answers to her questions will be found in the contents of the blog as she reads them, but because I found one or two of them fairly interesting myself, I thought I'd address them here, even though I'm not real fond of a lot of questions.

One thing I have always found interesting is the questions people have when they are confronted with a scenario or situation that they are not familiar with. With all of our friends and family living in the suburbs at the time, when Rosie and I moved into the "big city"; everyone always had the same question, which was "where are you going to get your groceries?"
Now, I can understand anyone having that concern when they look at Rosie, but I don't know how anyone can think I have ever been lacking in the grocery getting business. The truth is, we have more grocery stores in close proximity here in downtown St. Louis than we ever had in the hills of Jefferson County, and we never got the question back when we lived in High Ridge. It's only because the people we knew haven't dealt with living in the city, so a basic need for finding food in an unfamiliar place naturally was foreign to them.
Our friend Debi down in Florida has the same concerns, even though the question was a little different. She wonders how we will get fresh fruit and vegetables, and how were we going to store meat. Debi apparently hadn't gotten to the section in the blog about all the storage space I built aboard Swing Set to house tons of canned goods. In a pinch, Rosie and I have no problem with eating anything canned, and we will have stores on board to last us for weeks on end. The fact is, we have a fairly good sized refrigerator on Swing Set. While it's not house sized, it's a Norcold AC/DC unit that will run just fine by virtue of the wind generators alone. We won't have the capability of freezing meat in large amounts in the small freezer, or keeping an abundance of fresh vegetables on hand, but considering that the majority of our anchorages should be close to some type of population center, a weekly trip in the dinghy to obtain groceries will be a common occurrence.
When you think about it, an expedition to pick up a box of rice or dog food will become the focus of any particular day. I can hear it now; "What do you want to do today?"
"Let's go get some ---------, we're running a bit low".
Most likely a trip to get a basic provision will include a search on the Internet for the closest grocery or quick mart. One thing that will make for an appealing anchorage will be the proximity of necessities, something I'll do way before dropping the hook anyway if possible. Next will be the dinghy ride; it could be three, four, or more miles away, but that's why we chose a dinghy that scoots along fairly well at a good speed. Being resourceful at finding a spot to dock the dinghy will be a talent that will come in handy, and I have little concern about my ability in mastering that skill. Sometimes, marinas and harbors charge to dock a dinghy for a trip to town, but a flair for conversation and making friends will be helpful in finding a free spot. Maybe I'll let Rosie do the talking in those cases.
I think getting to a store, talking to people on the way about local history or neat places to go, and just gathering information about the lay of the land, will be a fun part of getting supplies, whether it be groceries or mechanical provisions.
One thing that is different today than it was when I was growing up, is that the majority of the fuel stops today have mini grocery stores in them. When I was growing up, the local filling station was lucky to have a soda machine with Nehi in it and a bag of So Good potato chips on hand. Today, you can go to MotoMart and get a frozen rib eye steak and a box of Huggies along with your gasoline.
Another question our friend had was if one of us were going to be able to sleep while the other one "steered" the boat. I wonder if she was kidding me with this question. If she wasn't being funny, I wonder where she thinks we are going? On a sailboat crossing large bodies of water, it's common, if not required, to have someone at the helm for all night crossings while others in the crew get their sleep. Our plan, (and you know I abhor a plan) is to travel during daylight hours and sleep on the hook at night, and not only for one night, but for many nights in a row. If the price of fuel goes up much more, we might be reduced to traveling once per month, for 40 miles at a time. Now I'm kidding, but one thing that hasn't changed much over the course of time is that towns everywhere have been in the same place for years, and were spaced apart in direct relation to how far a party could walk or drive a wagon in the course of a day or two. Places to get "stuff" will never be far away on any coastline, I think.
One question harder to answer was the one about what we're going to be eating? Well, that depends on my ability to learn how to fish, something I am set on doing. If we are anchored out somewhere near an island with no towns close, we'll eat fish, or lacking that, we'll dig into those canned goods until we absolutely have to pull anchor and head to a town. I'll be reporting on our daily meals as we go because gathering supplies and preparing meals will be most of the fun, if you view it as an adventure rather than a chore, so the exact menu could hardly be determined at this point.
I like questions like the ones Debi had for us. I just don't like questions about particular plans for where we are going to be at a certain time. Those answers demand a schedule, something we're are resistant to our core to follow if we can help it. So if you have questions about how we think we are going to go about a particular chore, I'll be happy to attempt an answer; then as we progress, we can see how it actually turns out. Those questions may prompt me to do some much needed research on a topic that we haven't yet considered.

Funds Sought To Clean Up The Great Lakes........

Under the budget submitted by President Obama, the push by the federal government to restore the Great Lakes will see an influx of $300 million for cleaning up harbors, fighting Asian carp as well as making progress on other long-standing environmental issues.  The priorities of the Great Lakes initiative include stepping up efforts to clean nine river mouths and harbors contaminated by industrial toxins, ramping up efforts to stop invasive species, and healing three watersheds choked by algae blooms........
