Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

River Levels Falling At St. Louis, Barges Still Moving........

Since just before Christmas, the level of the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri has fallen.  As of Thursday morning, the St. Louis Gage measured 1.6 gage feet.  A year ago, the monthly gage average was 6.4 feet at  St. Louis.  As of January 14, barge traffic was still moving through St. Louis, with 293 empty barges running upriver through Lock and Dam No. 27.  It is likely that the barges are heading for places on the Illinois River, which stays open year-round, weather permitting........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog is back !

Check it out ....  http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/

By 1990 we had bought a used Ski Nautique and had sold our first condo at Lake of the Ozarks, and committed ourselves to life on the Meramec River once again. The trailer for the Nautique had no spare tire, but the trailer was only used at the boat ramp right there at our house, so I didn't think anything of it, but as things went, I wished I had.
We had been limiting our boating to the Meramec River, but Rosie's boss had a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, and offered it to us to use occasionally. We decided to make the trip to the lake one weekend, and Rosie's cousin Roseann, and her husband Denny, agreed to meet us there and spend the weekend boating with us. We had a fun filled weekend with only one mechanical mishap. Did you know that a blown exhaust riser hose repair can be accomplished with a beach towel applied tourniquet style and held in place by a slightly inebriated husband of a cousin? Might be good to know if you find yourself taking on water in the middle of a very big lake at two in the morning.
Packed up and heading home late on Sunday afternoon, we were rolling along the interstate with Roseann and Denny bringing up the rear in their vehicle when our boat trailer started swaying side to side and I correctly determined the problem to be a flat tire. I pulled off onto the shoulder and Denny followed. The full impact of chancing the trip without a spare tire fell upon me right then, but regrets were not going to solve our dilemma, so I got to work solving ours. I jacked up the trailer and pulled off the wheel, threw it in the back of our truck, disconnected the trailer, and left the boat and trailer along the side of the highway, along with Rosie, Roseann, and Denny. I had to travel 25 miles back toward the nearest town to find a garage willing to mount another tire on our rim, so after a 50 mile round trip, we were burning sun as I hitched up the trailer to our truck and mounted the wheel and tire, as the interstate traffic returning from the lake and other places whizzed past us just feet away. Right here is where I made another key blunder. My routine concerning wheel mounting is to spin the lug nuts on with my "T" shaped lug wrench, with the wheel jacked up off the ground for clearance. Then, once the jack is taken away, each lug nut is then tightened completely with the ground preventing the wheel from spinning. The final lug nut tightening was omitted from my routine as the wind blast from each passing car became increasingly discombobulating.
Denny kept pace with us as we sped along at moderately illegal speeds until we came up on our exit at Fenton, MO. Denny sped past and I slowed to make the exit when I became painfully aware of my failure to tighten those lug nuts completely. Considering that we had done virtually no braking since the trailer wheel was mounted, the constant pull of the wheel against the studs apparently kept it from coming off earlier. But as I braked I heard a thump and observed the wheel from our trailer pass me doing eighty-plus MPH and bouncing 30 feet in the air.
If blessings were to be counted afterwards, then the fact that my stupid mistake didn't lead to our wheel finding the windshield of an oncoming car would be on the top of the tally. Once I corralled the rig over to shoulder of the exit ramp and collected the errant wheel, I began once again to solve the riddle of getting the trailer home with one wheel. Working in the dark with no flashlight, and once again just feet away from passing traffic, I was able to take two studs off the opposing wheel and use them where the five studs had sheared off of the wheel with the new tire mounted on it. Making the trip all the way home was out of the question as the wheel with the two lug nuts wobbled like a clown car, so I parked the trailer in a nearby used car lot and made for home.
To this day, a buddy of mine still doesn't know that I pirated a wheel from his unused trailer to get our boat and trailer home the next day. I put his stuff back together before I bought everything I needed to repair the damage I had done to our trailer wheels, along with a spare tire.

A few beers at the Saint Louis Boat Show lead to the purchase of this 1991 Master Craft, pictured above on the Hydro Hoist for it. A trailer was included in the deal, and yes, there was a spare tire too. We had no trailering issues with this boat other than trying to make it float one day without a bilge plug in it. Luckily I was able to get the boat back onto the trailer without sinking it.
We were nearly done with trailering mishaps, as we had one more boat that required a trailer, but it too was kept on a hoist, either at our home on the Meramec or at another condo we had purchased at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Another brief incident involving a trailer wasn't with our rig, but with a friend's outfit out in Nevada. A buddy of mine was living in California and was keeping his older boat at a marina on the Colorado River about 60 miles south of Las Vegas. When he found out that we were going to be in Vegas for a week one November in '92, I think, he offered the use of his boat. He had called the marina to say we were coming to use the boat at some time on our trip, so when we arrived at the marina for a late afternoon outing on my buddy's boat, the marina owner knew we were coming, but had not prepared the boat in any way.
As the boat was sitting on a trailer, it was then necessary to get it launched, and after a considerable wait on our part, some help arrived with a tractor to get us on our way. I jumped into the boat as the rig was backed into the river along a launch ramp that was the widest I had ever seen, at least 100 feet wide. I was expecting the yard man to stick me into the water just far enough to get the motor started, so imagine my surprise when he slipped me quickly into the Colorado River and with a perfect stop, sent me and the boat shooting into the moderate, but still moving current. Being at the helm of a vessel totally unfamiliar is one thing, but in this situation, it was particularly unnerving. I quickly applied the choke, pumped the throttle once, and turned the key. Nothing but the telltale clicks of a dead battery were the only response I got from my attempts to start the boat engine before I drifted past the last lane of the boat ramp. Panic never helps, so when I couldn't find a paddle, (slight panic), I grabbed the closest replacement in the form of a slalom water ski and began paddling my butt off towards the last section of boat ramp. To his credit, and his only credit, the tractor driver recognized my dilemma, and brought the trailer over to where I was about to drift past and I was able to get the boat back safely onto the trailer.
With promises of "gittin' 'er on the charger fer tomorra", we headed back to the comforts of Las Vegas after my ten minute boat ride on the Colorado River. Rosie only got to watch from the bank. The next day, the temperatures dropped and the wind kicked up, making the prospects of another attempt at boating on the Colorado a dim one. At least the battery got charged, I hope.
Our last trailering incident involved our Jet Ski trailer. At the time, 1997, we had a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks where we kept our Formula 280SS on a lift, and we had a Kawasaki Jet Ski that we used on the Meramec, and also took up to the Alton Pool to use on the Mississippi River occasionally. The Kawasaki normally was kept on the Hydro Hoist that we still had at our dock on the Meramec, so the trailer sat dormant most of the time. It was after one of these dormant periods when I decided to take the Jet Ski up to the Mississippi for the afternoon. As I was heading for Heartland Marina, which is now owned by some friends and called Eagles Landing, I heard some complaints coming from the Jet Ski trailer wheels as I neared the boat ramp. The wheel bearings were red hot and I knew then that they needed to be replaced due to my neglect. I dunk the Jet Ski in the river and tied it up to a dock while I drug the trailer back to a nearby mechanic to get new wheel bearings installed. Not being able to accommodate me while I waited, undaunted, I left the trailer at the boat yard and went back to the river for an afternoon of fun. At the end of the day, I backed my pickup into the river up to the tailgate, and using the rubber truck bed mat as a cushion, I drove the Jet Ski right up into the bed of the truck to take it home. An onlooker replied at the time, "I never saw anyone do that before". "Desperate circumstances demand desperate measures", they say, but I like "Necessity is the mother of invention" better.
So the preceding tales are the total of our trailering mishaps, and yes, most of them are due to my stupidity or oversight, but a man's got to know his limitations, and trailering boats is apparently one of mine, so we'll keep our boats in the water in the future, or at least on a boat hoist, thank you very much.

TowBoatUS News

TowBoatUS Cape Coral Earns "Tower Of The Year" Award

CAPE CORAL, Fla., January 19, 2012 -- An on-the-water towboat company that helps Southwest Florida boaters get home safely was singled out for its professionalism at the BoatUS Towing Services Annual Conference recently held in Tampa, FL. Tower of the Year honors went to TowBoatUS Cape Coral, which is owned and operated by Capt. Richard Paul and Capt. Jay McMillin. The company has locations in Cape Coral, Ft. Myers Beach and North Ft. Myers. Services offered include jump-starts, soft ungroundings, tows back to launch ramps, marinas or home docks, and fuel drop offs.

Paul’s and McMillin’s locally-owned company is part of a nationwide network of 300 ports and fleet of 600 TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist towboats. The company was honored for its near-perfect towing dispatch operation, superior customer service and satisfaction, as well as towing case management. The company also ranked fifth in the fleet for new membership sales. Additionally, TowBoatUS Cape Coral was honored with the distinguished Dispatchers Choice of the Year Award for the Gulf Coast States region — for the second year in a row.

Paul and McMillin first met over 17 years ago working at Publix Supermarkets, where both were former store managers before retiring and purchasing their first location, TowBoatUS Cape Coral, in 2005. Since then, they have expanded their operations to Ft. Myers Beach as well as North Ft. Myers. These additional locations have led to faster on-the-water response times, greatly decreasing the time it takes to arrive on scene. “With close to 2000 on-the-water tows annually, as well as un-groundings, adding these ports has been a huge complement to our business,” said Capt. Paul.

“What sets Paul’s and McMillin’s operation apart, is their deep commitment to marketing efforts that have really helped spread the word about our on-the-water towing services,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. “We are also very proud of their staffs’ professionalism and their deep commitment to providing Outstanding Customer Service.”

Much like an auto club, BoatUS Towing Services offers an “unlimited” towing plan for Florida boaters for just $149 a year, which includes BoatUS membership. Without a towing plan, the national average out-of-pocket cost for a tow is about $600. For another $14, those who trailer their boats on the road can also take advantage of BoatUS’ Trailer Assist program which will tow both a boat trailer and tow vehicle up to 100 miles to a safe location or home.

Hi Bill

We went to the Chain of rocks bridge Saturday for eagle days. We did not see many eagles but it was still a fun event. I do not remember ever going across the bridge although I am sure I did when I was little. So going was more about the bridge and river than the eagles. They did have an eagle in one of the tents that they rescued which cannot go back into the wild. They use it for educational purposes but it looked more like it wanted outside!

U.S. Coast Guard

Emergencies Require Correct Course Of Action.........

With frigid temperatures strong winds and fast-moving currents, lives at sea can be lost or saved in a matter of minutes. Perhaps no one understands this more than the fisherman.

Fishermen live their lives on the water and understand the necessity to be vigilant at all times and anticipate the sea’s unforeseen actions. The responsibility for the professional mariner’s safety begins before even leaving the dock. Two recent cases, both including New England fishing crews, paint the picture of the correct course of action to take when thrown into an emergency.........

    Officials Tour Frozen Missouri River........

Tuesday, North Dakota officials took a helicopter ride aboard a Blackhawk to take a peek at the frozen Missouri River.  The river is freezing over, and causing water levels to rise.  So far, water seems to be flowing under the ice.  The trip offered officials a chance to see where ice is likely to jam up........

BoatUS Angler Will Assist Competitors in Need During B.A.S.S. Open

ALEXANDRIA, Va., January 18, 2012 – Traveling thousands of miles each year on the road and making it to weigh-in at the end of a tournament day are “givens” for today’s successful pro angler. But roadside breakdowns and on-the-water troubles can threaten a winning paycheck. That’s why it’s a perfect fit to announce that BoatUS Angler, which has provided both roadside and on-the-water assistance to boat and rig owners for nearly 20 years, has signed a sponsorship agreement with B.A.S.S. to be the Official Towing Service of the 2012 Bassmaster Open Series.

“On more than one occasion last year, we saw first-hand the goodness of BoatUS Angler being able to provide much needed assistance to our anglers during competition,” said B.A.S.S. Senior Tournament Manager, Chris Bowes. “Thus, entering a formal agreement to have BoatUS Angler towboats officially available to all Open competitors is a very logical relationship,” Bowes explained. “It’s a reassuring benefit to our anglers, as well as the B.A.S.S. staff who, first and foremost, want to see all of our competitors return safely to the dock each afternoon.”

BoatUS Angler is the fishing division membership from the nation’s largest association of recreational boaters. They offer boat-owning fisherman services such as on-the-water breakdown and towing assistance provided by the largest fleet of towboats in North America, as well as roadside boat trailer and tow vehicle assistance through 20,000 specialized towing companies.

“Tournament anglers spend countless hours behind the wheel of their bass boat and tow vehicle,” said BoatUS Angler’s Steve Levi. “We’re offering a program that takes the hassles away with 24/7 dispatch assistance when either one breaks down, and gives you the chance with our Weigh-to-Win incentive program to make some extra cash when competing in nearly 300 professional fishing tournaments.”

“Our TowBoatUS Dispatch Service handles on-the-water breakdown calls on most of the nation’s major inland lakes, rivers and reservoirs,” added Levi. “If we don’t have TowBoatUS location nearby, our 24/7 dispatch centers can get you the help you need whether your engine fails, you’re out of gas, your battery dies or you run aground in shallow water.”

Sheriffs’ boats, camera boats, and other non-competitors have towed Bassmaster tournament anglers experiencing breakdowns safely to shore in the past, but this new agreement will mark the first time in history where B.A.S.S. has allowed outside help from a formal towing service for anglers during competition.

Services provided by towboats are free of charge with an affordable BoatUS Angler membership. Competitors who have not signed up for membership will be charged the standard cost of services provided by TowBoatUS.

Tournament anglers who buy a BoatUS Angler membership will also benefit greatly from their subsequent free participation in the BoatUS Angler “Weigh-to-Win” tournament cash bonus program.

Participation in BoatUS Angler’s “Weigh-to-Win” is as simple as signing up for any of the following invaluable programs. You choose which option appeals to you most.

The On-the-Road Towing package includes a BoatUS Angler membership for just $38 and is great for bass anglers concerned about breakdowns on the highway. Those who want on-the-water assistance would likely choose the On-the-Water UnlimitedFreshwater Towing package for $58. Anglers that want their mind at ease, both on-the-road and on-the-water, would choose the combined BoatUS Angler membership for $72. All three offerings make you eligible to enter the “Weigh-to-Win” tournament cash bonus program at no additional cost.

Simply said, it pays to buy a highly affordable BoatUS Angler membership regardless of what B.A.S.S. events you compete in, including the Bassmaster Weekend Series – especially when you’re registered for the Weigh-to-Win cash tournament bonus program, and that’s why hundreds of anglers signed up last year. To make sure you are eligible in 2012, just dial (918) 742-6424 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CST, and ask for Kendell, she’ll make sure you get signed-up. Bill,

A few of us are celebrating Christmas at the Alton Boat Club today. Santa is planning to be here at noon. Here are a couple of Christmas trees on boats at Paisa Harbor. My wife Melissa took these last night. Nothing better than decorating the boat and having a pre-Christmas overnight with our Harbor friends the weekend before we do the same with family!

News Release

Cold weather boating requires extra caution, preparation

WASHINGTON – While the majority of boaters in colder parts of the country have winterized their boats or put them into storage until spring, many still rely on their vessels for hunting, fishing or necessary transportation in cold weather, substantially increasing their risk of a deadly accident. Extra caution and preparation should be taken before heading out on the water in winter.

The U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary says the importance of wearing a life jacket becomes even more critical when the danger for hypothermia is added to other concerns. Sudden immersion in cold water can have severe physiological consequences, such as cardiac arrest, fast loss of body heat (the body loses heat 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air) and involuntary inhalation of water (gasping) that results in drowning. Most Coast Guard-approved life jackets when worn are designed to keep the user’s head above water while awaiting rescue.

In addition to wearing a life jacket, wearing the right clothing also can contribute to a more enjoyable and safer cold weather boating experience. Consider layering clothing, including a wet suit or dry suit, to help ward off the effects of hypothermia.

Following are some additional tips for safe winter boating:

--Assess the risks – envision what can go wrong and be fully equipped and prepared.

--Leave a float plan with a responsible individual who knows your intentions, location, and who to call if you fail to return as scheduled.

--Carry a VHF radio or EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), signal flares and other means to draw attention to your location.

--Be aware of and prepared for the shock of sudden immersion and incapacitating effects of cold water – dress to get wet and carry a change of clothing in a waterproof container.

--Maintain situational awareness on the water – be aware of activity around your vessel and potential for fast-changing weather conditions.

--Boat safe and sober – save the alcohol for when you’ve safely returned.

--Be sure your vessel is in good operating condition and has the necessary safety equipment on board before you leave the dock.

--Refresh your seamanship skills…take a boating safety course offered by your local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla.

Ice Fisherman Rescued....  A Second Time....

Sunday, an ice fisherman from Illinois was rescued off the shore of Green Bay for a second time in as many years.  The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Chief, Curt Vandertie stated that the angler was not aware the ice he was on had broken away, allowing him to drift away.  Rescuers retrieved the man about 600 yards from shore.  Chief Vandertie stated that this time, the man would be getting a bill for the rescue........

Five On-the-Water Boat Towboat Captains Honored for Heroism.......

TAMPA, Fla., January 17, 2012 –- With over 600 tow boats spread across North America, the law of averages dictates that, eventually, BoatUS towing captains will be thrust into the middle of life-threatening emergencies. BoatUS Towing Services recently honored five of its TowBoatUS captains for their heroic actions with its annual BoatUS “Woody Pollack Lifesaving Awards” at a ceremony that capped off the group’s annual conference held in Tampa FL. The award is named after the well-respected towboat captain in the fleet who died at an early age.

“Sometimes the routine of normal day is interrupted by a life-threatening mayday call or an incident that unfolds in front of them, and our captains step in without hesitation,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. “They are not in the rescue business, but their actions save others. We are very proud of them.”

US Coast Guard Chief of Search and Rescue, Captain David McBride, who BoatUS also honored at the ceremony for his years of selfless and dedicated service to the nation’s boaters, presented the awards on behalf of BoatUS. Here are the details on the incidents:

One late, blustery summer night last year in July, Captain Kevin Freestone of TowBoatUS Big Pine Key, FL, responded to a mayday call from a 22-foot vessel with six persons aboard. After communications with the stricken boat fell ominously silent, Freestone desperately searched and found the swamped vessel, in which six passengers, standing in the semi-submersed boat, were precariously trying to balance to keep from overturning. Freestone took all aboard and safely returned them to shore and salvaged the vessel.

When a late afternoon thunderstorm rolled in sheets of rain, 30 knots of wind, lighting and thunder, Captain Lee Eckler of TowBoatUS Tarpon Springs, FL was stunned at what he saw in the distance through the tempest: three heads bobbing in the water and an overturned kayak. Eckler immediately took aboard three girls, age 12 to 16, who only had one life jacket amongst them, and then safely deposited them and the kayak ashore at their nearby home. It was likely the luckiest break in their young lives.

One Friday last April, husband and wife Captains Rodney and Mattie Suggs of TowBoatUS Clear Lake, TX, raced to the scene of a disabled sailboat that had reported several persons in the water, but who were unable to swim back to the vessel as a swift current dragged them farther away. After finding one person and safely bringing them aboard, the Suggs’ were shocked to learn that six others were still missing. Searching, the captains soon found the remaining group – all of whom were severely exhausted, and one who had ingested a large amount of seawater. His friends said the young man would have soon drowned if it had not been for the Sugg’s fortunate actions.

On a Saturday afternoon Captain Mike Dunn of TowBoatUS Homosassa, FL, along with the local sheriff, arrived to a chaotic scene in which a 37-foot powerboat had violently overturned, ejecting its nine passengers into the water. While all had injuries, one 18-year-old was blue, not breathing, and had an exposed open wound to the head. After loading the young man aboard with the help of a Good Samaritan nurse and the boy’s mother, Dunn gunned the engines racing for shore while CPR was performed. At high speed, he then dodged dozens of boats along a narrow, constricted waterway, all the while making securité calls on the VHF radio and arranging to rendezvous with EMTs. The teen was life-flighted to the local hospital – and survived.

Coal Freighter Runs Aground, Dredging Cutbacks Questioned.........

Tuesday, a coal freighter ran aground close to the mouth of the Mississippi River, and was freed a short time later.  The grounding has raised questions about the cutbacks in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging operations.  Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise stated that the incident illustrates the need for the Corps to dredge the lower portions of the Mississippi River.  There were no injuries, pollution or river traffic tie-ups caused by the grounding........

Golden Eagle Sunset via. Houston Texas

Picture of the Day ... was sent to us by Dan Morlang, a transplanted River Rat who now lives in Houston, Texas.

Bill,

Hope you remember me

The attached picture was taken by my twin brother Dave Morlang, last Thursday January 6th, who hails out of Lake Center Marina. He was drifting just below the Golden Eagle and took this shot facing upstream. He hails out of Lake Center Marina in the boat Deja Vu. What makes this picture special is Dave is a 100% river rat and just cannot get enough of the river. I live in Houston now and boat in Galveston Bay but we grew up on this stretch of river and as twins we share sunset pictures all the time and talk about the old days. Let’s see at 60 years old how many water sunsets have we seen/shared must be well over 1000.

Hi Bill,

I was feeling cold on this icy Saturday morning and found this picture from the 2006 Blessing of the Fleet remembering how hot it was and how COLD that water was when we went under it.

Hopefully all the Marinas get thru this ice storm without further damaged.

Have a great weekend,

Friday, the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce announced that they and the Camden Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lake West Chamber of Commerce have joined together in backing changes to the project boundary as proposed by Amren Missouri.  The proposal would lower the project boundary of the Lake of the Ozarks to an elevation of 662 feet, except in a few places, where the boundary would be less than 662 feet to remove residences from FERC's province........

Rescue Sitka, Alaska

Jan Desherlia, of Grafton Harbor, sent us a heart warming story that is being circulated on the internet about the rescue of four juvenile black-tailed deer in the waters near Sitka, Alaska........

The story goes like this.......

Tom Satre was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.  Once they reached the boat they began to circling and looking directly those on board. The captain said they could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed.

The captain opened up the boat's back gate and helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the fishing vessel. When on board the deer collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.  Once they docked, the first buck that had been pulled from the water hopped from the boat onto the dock, looked back as if
to say 'thank you' and disappeared into the trees.........

Two more followed after some prodding and a bit of assistance, but the smallest deer needed a little more help and was transported by wheelbarrow..

Below is a link to one version of the story and pictures being circulated on the internet

Thursday, Illinois officials granted a special use permit to Mississippi Sand LLC to operate a sand mine on 300 acres adjacent to Starved Rock State Park.  Many residents and environmentalists believe that mining operations would be disruptive to wildlife and park visitors, and are disappointed that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has yet to comment on the mine proposal.  The IDNR has 120 days to deny or grant a permit........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

    Myth v. Fact

MYTH: USACE is responsible for all of the nation's levees.

FACT: USACE has specific authorities for approximately 2,000 levees, or 14,000 miles nationwide. There is still a large universe of private and other non-USACE levees that have not been inventoried or inspected. The National Committee on Levee Safety (NCLS) has estimated that there may be more than 100,000 miles of levees nationwide, many of which have not been inspected or inventoried. The precise size of this ‘universe of levees’, where the levees are located, their condition, or the consequences of poor performance is currently unknown.

Pictures of the Day ... Were sent in by Captain Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis.

Hi Bill,

Here are a few pics of one of our project boats during a few restoration phases. This particular boat is a 1958 Bowman. These were experimental vacuum formed plastic hulls developed by Goodyear Aerospace. A few small boat builders took the hulls from Goodyear and finished them with wooden top decks, interiors, motors etc. Bowman was one of those builders. They are long since gone but there are still a few of these “kicking around” Wouldn’t you know Ole’ boys got their hands on one!

Tuesday, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin spoke to over 150 guests at the Greater Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce's issues and Eggs breakfast.  Among the topics discussed was the $140 million effort Madison, St. Clair and Monroe county officials are making to upgrade 64 miles worth of flood protection levees prior to the new Federal Emergency Management Agency Flood Maps are released.  Concerns are high that the new flood maps could cripple the metro-east economy........

Illinois River At Seneca, Illinois

   Marina Fire Suspicious, Investigation Continues.........

Thursday morning, 15 boats were destroyed, and a half dozen others were damaged in a marina fire.  Authorities are calling the blaze suspicious.  Apparently, the fire jumped from boat to boat, eventually catching a large steel storage shed on fire, causing the vessels inside to suffer heat and smoke damage.  30 firefighters from five departments fought the blaze for 6 1/2 hours before dousing it........

Fishing And Hunting Safety

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Encourages Safety On The Water.........

Needless drowning deaths of hunters who fall into lakes and streams can be prevented with a little preparation and fast thinking, according to officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District.

"Duck hunters or waterfowlers may not think of themselves as boaters, even though they use boats to position decoys in the water," said Park Ranger Asher Alexander. "They may not consider a life jacket as a necessity; but hunters drown needlessly every year."

Hunters should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device while traveling to and from the hunting blind, according to Alexander. Camouflage life jackets are available and offer adequate flotation.........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

    Low Water Could Limit Shipping.........

For the better part of the month, the Mississippi River gage at St. Louis has been in the three to five foot range.  Typically in early January, the gage is around 13 feet.  Reduced river levels could lead to reduced barge loading capacities.  For each foot of reduced draft, the barge loses around 200 short tons of capacity. At this time, the river level is not affecting barge shipping operations........

Pictures of the Day

Pictures of the Day ... Were sent in by Captain Darryll Weil, along with a progress report on the Chris Craft Commander project at Little John's shop.  The Chris Craft is owned by Randy Bicknese, who writes....

My wife Diane and I have owned our 1969 38' Chris Craft Commander Sedan "Lady Di" since 1999. The Chris Craft Commander has a fiberglass hull and superstructure with classic wood boat lines and interior, something you just don't find in modern boats. The boat was in good shape when we purchased it and it has always been in fresh water. The boat had all of its original equipment and gel coat when we purchased it. Other than the transom, the white gelcoat is all original and nearly perfect. The engines were the original 300 hp Chris Craft Marine 427s, which are based on the same 427 FE motor casting and configuration Ford used to dominate Nascar in the mid 60s. We made many improvements in the interior and exterior appearance of the boat over the years and have kept everything on the boat as original as possible.

This phase of the Commander project started in the fall of 2009 when the port engine broke a connecting rod on our way to Alton for the weekend. For those of you who know me, in my typical fashion I could not just fix that broken engine and get back to boating like everyone else. I wanted to do something with the boat that I have never seen anyone else do. As it turns out, the engines were pulled in the spring of 2010 just before I started driving the Little John's Motorsports dragboat Kwithchabitchin. My focus over the past two years shifted from the Commander project to dragboat racing and the Commander project slowed to a crawl as a result. Diane loves her boat and kindly and tactfully refocused me on the Commander at the end of the 2011 dragboat season to be sure her boat would be ready for the 2012 boating season. Hopefully the Commander project turns out as well as our 2011 dragboat season. We won the Top Eliminator High Points Championship in both the Kentucky Drag Boat Association and the St. Louis Drag Boat Association and were Runner Up in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series. If Little John can keep plugging away, I am sure it will. The hours involved to date are incredible, hundreds and hundreds, maybe over a thousand between the two of us. It is just a matter of putting our minds to it.

The bilge of the boat has been completely stripped and repainted from the transom to the bow. When I mean stripped, I mean stripped. Motors, generator, water tank, holding tank, electrical system, water system, fuel system, thru hull fittings, rudder boxes, trim tabs, shaft logs, swim platform brackets, toilet, .... all were out. It was a basically a bare hull, a clean slate to have fun with.

The motors were completely disassembled and every part has been blasted and repainted. Todd of Todd's Machine who builds our drag boat motors bored and stroked the motors from 427 to 470 cubic inches and fitted them with all new race spec balanced internals. The pistons and camshafts were custom one-offs designed to run the ethanol blends of fuel we will see at our favorite gas docks in the near future. We are in the process of installing electronic fuel injection and timing control which will allow us to get the most power and efficiency out of the engines as the fuel available changes. It will be fun to see how much of a change those engine improvements will make in the efficiency and performance of the boat. It was no slouch before. The engines have been designed and built to outlast their original configuration, so they should be good for another 40 years or so.

The decision was made to replace the original flathead four-cylinder Kohler 6.5 KW generator with a brand new Westerbeke 5.0 KW generator. The new Westerbeke will be far lighter and more fuel efficient and it will produce little or no carbon monoxide while operating. The generator was moved from its original location just aft of the cabin bulkhead to the rear bilge compartment where the original 75 gallon steel water tank was located. The new location of the generator will help eliminate the noise and carbon monoxide concerns I had with the original generator.

The entire electrical system has been updated to current standards. All of the through hull hardware has been replaced. The boat is also being fitted with new plastic water and waste tanks, dual heat source water heater, water distribution system, and fuel distribution system. The plywood decking in the engine room and generator room has been replaced with 3/4" white starboard, which really looks nice against the fresh grey bilge coat.

Stay tuned. The dirty work of this project is almost over and the fun part is starting. This will be an original classic 1969 sedan cruiser with the guts and infrastructure of a modern sport cruiser. I can't wait to get the engines back in and make some shake-down runs. If anyone wants to check out the results of this restoration project this spring feel free to contact one of us. It will all come together over the next few weeks. If you want results, please think of Little John's Marine Service for you custom restoration and fabrication projects.

See you on the water.
Randy Bicknese

Captain Weil also included a link to Little John's website, where he is chronicling the Lady Di's "redo".  Click here to check out more project photos.

Coast Guard History

Founder Of Coast Guard Forerunner Celebrates Birthday........

On January 11, Founding Father Alexander Hamilton celebrated what could be his 257th birthday, however, the exact year is not known.  Hamilton established the Revenue Marine in 1790, as a way to combat smugglers trying to avoid paying import tariffs.  Also known as the Revenue Cutter Service, it was the precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard.  Hamilton assigned revenue cutters to 10 eastern ports to allow for tariff collection. Part of the mission of the revenue cutters was to give aid and assistance as needed........
