Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois Ring In The New Year With A Fireworks Show........
For the second year in a row, the city of Grafton will be hosting a fireworks show at 10 pm on New Year's Eve. The fireworks will be shot off near the lighthouse area of Grafton's riverfront.
Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow says that the City Council voted to spend $4,500 for a contract with Fireworks Authority for the display. The fireworks shows are intended to bring tourists to Grafton during what can be a slow time of year.
Morrow says that there will not be a centralized area to celebrate the New Year, however, the town's businesses will have their own events and attractions going on........

Bourbeuse River at Union, Missouri Union Residents Looking For Riverfront Improvements.......
During a recent city meeting, several residents of Union, Missouri said that they want the city to better take advantage of it's location along the Bourbeuse River. The river splits the city, but offers few public amenities outside of boat ramps.
Timothy Breihan with consulting firm H3 studio of St. Louis says that about 15 percent of Union is in the floodplain of the Bourbeuse River and it's tributaries, making it fairly unique in that part of the state.
Breihan says that the river's division of the town could possibly become a potential identifying characteristic. He adds that instead of the riverfront being a vacant flood plain, see it as an amenity. If there is access to the river, it becomes a recreational river, and has programs associated with it........

Late last month, General Motors announced that they had acquired a 25 percent stake in the Seattle-based e-propulsion firm, Pure Watercraft.
Over the next four years, GM intends to invest some $35 billion in electric and autonomous vehicle technology.

Missouri Flooding News Proposed Rollback Of Flood Prevention Legislation Raises Concerns........
On Monday evening, the Jefferson County Council voted to table Bill 21-1229, which would have changed requirements for new construction in a flood plain.
Following the 2015 and 2017 flooding along the Meramec River, the Jefferson COunty Council changed the amount of water a building project can displace from one foot to one inch. State and federal standards are one foot.
While the legislation was intended to prevent future flood damage, however, the more strict restrictions have had unintended consequences. For example, some Jefferson COunty road and bridge projects will not be able to be completed because the projects cannot meet the more strict standards........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri Viking Cruise Lines Requesting Dock Modifications........
Viking Cruise Lines officials are asking the City of Hannibal to make some modifications to one of the city's docks in order to be able to accommodate a Viking vessel that is scheduled to begin visiting Hannibal in the next year.
According to Andy Dorian, Hannibal's director of central services, the modifications are needed because the Viking vessels have an entrance to their ship further from the bow than other cruise vessels.
Dorian reports that the modifications would include the removal of dock spud poles and relocating the current dock about 50 feet to the south from it's current location. Other changes requested include a new deadman to tie up to and a new landing pad for the gangway........

Boat Manufacturer Malibu Boats Acquired Maverick Boat Group........
Malibu Boats recently acquired the Maverick Boat Group, which is the parent company of Cobia, Pathfinder, Maverick and Hewes brands, for approximately $150 million. The transaction was funded with cash on hand and borrowings through Malibu's credit facility.
Malibu CEO Jack Springer says that this acquisition will allow Malibu to leverage their strong growth momentum while increasing manufacturing capacity, product development and distribution opportunities.
Springer says that talks about the acquisition began back in 2019, however, since Malibu had just acquired the Pursuit brand, the timing wasn't quite right........

The power management company, Eaton and the University of Toledo recently announced that they have been awarded an "Intelligent and Resilient Infrastructure" grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center.
Eaton and the University of Toledo will be using the grant to study the use of "large format additive Manufacturing machines and advanced materials", or three dimensional printing capable of printing high-strength parts to replace damaged Corps components faster.
For quite some time, the Corps has faced issues with not having replacement parts for some of their older structures. In many cases, the original manufacturers or contractors are out of business and/or original documents may not be available.........

Ohio River Near Monaca, Pennsylvania Scheduled Maintenance Causing Up To Five Day Delay........
Mariners had been experiencing delays of up to five days transiting the Montgomery Locks and Dam at Ohio River Mile Marker 32 near Monaca, Pennsylvania. The delays have been caused by a scheduled lock chamber closure.
According to John Dilla, chief of the locks and dams branch for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, the delays are painful for everyone, however, the short term pain is buying long-term reliability.
The Montgomery Locks and Dam's main chamber has been closed for miter gate repairs from October 29 through December 22. The auxiliary chamber was being used........

Mississippi River Near Quincy, Illinois Mid-America Port Commission Rose In National Rankings........
A port located in the Quincy, Illinois/Hannibal, Missouri region has risen in the national rankings. The Mid-America Port Commission rose from 44th to 41st place in the Top 50 Principal U.S. Ports List.
The freight tonnage handled by the MAPC increased to 15 million tons, an increase of 3 million tons over the previous year. Brent Hoerr, a farmer and a member of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers Association said that they anticipate the slow and steady growth to continue.
According to rankings released by the U.S. Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center, MAPC is the largest port on the Upper Mississippi River and the seventh largest in the nation, larger than the Port of Galveston in Texas........

Missouri Department Of Conservation Christmas Trees To Be Recycled Into Fish Habitat........
The Missouri Department of Conservation and St. Louis County Parks have teamed up as part of a Christmas tree recycling program.
Through January 16th, Christmas trees can be dropped off at one of four parks and will be sunk into Spanish Lake to be used as fish habitat.
The trees must be cleared of all ornaments, lights and tinsel. After being undecorated, the trees may be dropped off at:

Illinois River Near Seneca, Illinois January Hearing Scheduled For Illinois River Barge Fleet Permit........
On January 28, 2022, Grundy County, Illinois judge Sheldon Sobol will be holding a hearing where he will be asked to rule definitively on a barge fleeting permit.
Illinois & Michigan Oil Company has wanted to secure up to 106 barges fleeted along a 1.6 mile long section of the Illinois RIver near Seneca, where they will transfer cargo. Some local property owners are objecting.
Last month, Sobol had ruled that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not have the authority to permit such a business along the Illinois RIver. He also ruled that Rick and Gloria Sims, who had sued the state, did not have a legal basis to sue as parties of record in the permitting process........

Lower Mississippi River First Ship Sailed After Mississippi River Channel Deepening........
The first vessel has sailed from the Mississippi River with a draft of 47.7 feet following the recent increase in draft at 48 feet.
The M/V CSSC Le Havre, loaded with cargo from Alliance Coal, LLC and operated by Cargill International, is headed to the Far East with 112,000 metric tons.
Under the current phase, the Mississippi River will be deepened to 50 feet in 2022, with a long term goal of a 55 foot draft which was authorized by Congress in 1985........

Dale Hollow Lake Near Celina, Tennessee Boaters Film Herd Of Deer Swimming, Prompt Santa Jokes........
On December 23rd, a group of boaters on Dale Hollow Lake near Celina, Tennessee spotted a unique sight: a herd of deer swimming. This prompted jokes from wildlife officials about Santa's preferred method of travel.
During the short video, at least six deer are visible swimming as the boat idles towards them. A person off camera can be heard saying "that isn't something you see every day".
Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency jokes that the herd may belong to Santa. The agency said in a Facebook post that since Christmas was a few days off, perhaps St. Nick swapped the sleigh for a boat........

Mississippi River Near Bettendorf, Iowa A Look At The Old And New I-74 Bridges........
There are two bridges spanning the Mississippi River between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois, representing more than 100 years of history. The spans sit close together, one full of cars and the other empty. Only a few months ago, their positions were reversed.
In December, the Quad-Cities entered a new era when the new Interstate 74 Bridge opened and the old span was closed for good. The project took decades to move from concept and design to completion.
A study had shown that by 1994, the traffic congestion on the old Interstate 74 Bridge had swelled to 80,000 vehicles per day, which is considerably higher than the 48,000 vehicles per day the span was designed to handle........

Boat Manufacturer Zeeboat Contracted For Four Electric Towboats........
Last week, Industrial Service Solutions announced that they were providing Zeeboat LLC with general contract, project management and vessel support services for the manufacture and delivery of four electric towboats to be available for charter in 2025.
The four towboats will support container transit with a zero emissions towboat solution. They will be the first all-electric towboats constructed in North America. ISS and Zeeboat intend to partner on the decarbonization of ports via electrification.
The fully electric towboats will be based on a hull design from The Shearer Group Inc. The 95 by 34 foot towboat's hull shape was developed by TSGI using advanced fluid dynamic calculations and backup by vessels in service........

Ohio River At Tell City, Indiana Federal Funds To Be Used For Crane Pier........
The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced grant funding in the amount of $241 million that would go to improve port facilities across the nation. The funds are being allocated among 25 projects to improve port facilities in 19 states and one territory through the Maritime Administration's Port Infrastructure Development Program.
Tell City, Indiana is set to receive a $1.6 million grant for the Ohio River Pier Project, which will involve the construction of a 40 foot diameter pier for a crane that will be used for direct barge to truck unloading of cargo.
U.S. Department of Transportation Pete Buttigieg says that U.S. Maritime ports are a crucial part of the supply chains, and that the investments in the nation's ports will support American jobs, resilient and efficient operations and quicker delivery of goods to the public........

Added Sun Delaware River At Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania Reenactment Of Washington's Crossing The Delaware Revived........
On Christmas Day, hundreds of spectators gathered along both banks of the Delaware River to witness the annual Christmas Day reenactment of George Washington's 1776 crossing of the Delaware River a year after COVID restrictions forced the event to be viewed online.
On Saturday afternoon, reenactors in three boats completed the crossing in about an hour's time. Other activities included reenactments of Washington's address to his troops, historical speeches and processions and much more.
During the original crossing, boats carried 2,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 18 cannons across the Delaware River. Washington's troops marched 8 miles prior to battling Hessian mercenaries in the streets of Trenton, New Jersey........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently withdrew their support of the Yazoo Backwater Area Pumps Project, citing the Environmental Protection Agency's veto of the project.
The Yazoo Backwater Area Pumps Project would have been the final piece of a massive federal flood protection system that has been some 8- years in the making.
Norma Jean Mattei, a Mississippi River Commission member and a civil engineering professor at the University of New Orleans says that it comes as a surprise that the federal agencies had withdrawn support for the project just a year after backing it........

Lower Mississippi River Levee Bonfires Light The Way For Papa Noel.......
While Trolling The Internet.... We reeled in a photo gallery showing over 200 bonfires atop the Mississippi River levees in St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes in Louisiana. The bonfires light the way for Papa Noel in a Christmas tradition dating back to the 1700s........

Each year along the Mississippi RIver levees near Lutcher, Louisiana, more than 100 bonfires are constructed from wood. bamboo and fireworks in a tradition dating back to the 1800s. One story about the tradition says that the bonfires were meant to light the way for Papa Noel. Others have said that the bonfires assisted friends of the family find the inlets or slips off the river to homes of those they wished to visit on Christmas Eve........

Mississippi River Transportation APH Seeks Container Vessel Bids........
American Patriot Container Transport LLC is developing the patented vessels that will carry containerized cargo along the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois Rivers.
During a recent press event in Herculaneum, Sal Litrico, CEO of APCT announced that they have solicited seven U.S. shipyards for construction of four of the patented container vessels, with an option for four more.
The APCT vessels would be built in two sizes, with the larger "liner" vessel featuring a capacity of 2,375 TEUs. It will operate between the gateway terminal in Plaquemines and the Mississippi River ports in Memphis, and the new Herculaneum port.
The smaller "hybrid" vessel will feature a container capacity of 1,800 TEUs and is designed to be able to navigate through locks and low-lying bridges along the tributary rivers........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend Tourism Bureau Prepping For Eagle Season........
Eagle watching season is quickly coming to the Riverbend and this year, a couple of prime eagle viewing vantage points that had been closed in recent years will be open to the public this year.
The Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower in Hartford will be open January 8th through the end of February, but only on weekends. The top of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam was recently reopened to the public as well.
On January 8th, the annual Alton Audubon Eagle Ice Festival will be held. Cory Jobe, Great Rivers and Routes Tourism Bureau President says that eagle season creates a lot of tourism opportunities........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Preparations Are Underway For Christmas Eve Bonfires........
Preparations are underway for the annual Christmas Eve bonfires along the Mississippi River levees in St. John the Baptist and St. James Parishes, including the construction a giant crab. The crab's pinching claws operate on electric actuators, it's mouth opens and blows bubbles.
After being cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID 19 pandemic, the annual south Louisiana tradition is returning in 2021. The tradition of lighting bonfires atop the Mississippi River levees dates back 300 years, where the bonfires were used to light the way for Papa Noel.
More than 200 bonfires are set to light up the night sky on Christmas Eve in St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes........

Ohio River Near Paducah, Kentucky Paducah-McCracken Co. Riverport Awarded Over $3.3 Million........
The Paducah-McCracken County Riverport Authority recently received $3,320,000 to make infrastructure improvements. The riverport will use the funding to modernize material handling equipment, repair damaged facilities and upgrade site conditions in their bulk yard.
Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative James Comer sent letters to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation in support of PMCRA's grant application. McConnell says that this port creates a crucial link in the supply chains that serve consumers and businesses.
McConnell adds that the grant announcement is a significant step forward in the modernization and improvement of Kentucky's river infrastructure. The grant was distributed by the U.S. Department of Transportation via it's Port Infrastructure Development Program's competitive grant process........

MarineMax announced that they had entered into an agreement to acquire Largo, Florida-based Intrepid Powerboats, builder of outboard fishing boats and other models ranging in size from 24 to 47 feet.
MarineMax president and CEO Brett McGill says that the acquisition of Intrepid Powerboats follows MarineMax's strategy of adding quality businesses to their portfolio and implementing best practices that support the expansion of our gross margins.
McGill added that the strategic acquisition of Intrepid Powerboats will allow MarineMax to provide Intrepid with additional resources to expand and enhance how they serve their very loyal customer base........

Mississippi River Shipping New St. Louis Port Handling Containers Ships Will Revolutionize Midwest Shipping........
The economic effects of a proposed Mississippi RIver port and cargo terminal for container ships near St. Louis has not been fully studied, however, officials believe that container ships could revolutionize how Midwest companies ship products, prompting a burst of economic activity.
On Friday, a private development team made up of four companies revealed a plan to construct a cargo terminal on more than 300 acres of land along the Mississippi River in Herculaneum, Missouri.
The companies backing the port are Florida-based American Patriot Container Transport LLC, Texas-based Hawtex Development Corp., Maryland Heights-based developer Fred Weber Inc. and St. Louis metals company, The Doe Run Co.
When the port begins operations, likely in the fourth quarter of 2024, St. Louis would be the northernmost hub of a new shipping route up the Mississippi River that would bring container shipping to the Midwest........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau New Study Looking At Marina Feasibility ........
On Monday, members of the Cape Girardeau City Council voted to authorize a contract with Klingner & Associates to conduct a best use of public land analysis and feasibility study for a marina that would be located north of Century Casino.
According to the city's contract with Klingner & Associates, the marina is envisioned as catering to smaller transient vessels and may include multiple docking facilities.
Visit Cape executive director Brenda Newbern says that travelers along the Mississippi River would bring more business to the city. She adds that if there is somewhere for boaters to stop, dock and fuel up their boats, they'll head into town to shop, eat or even spend the night.
Mayor Bob Fox says that a minimum of 1,000 loopers pass through Cape Girardeau annually, and at this time, there is no easily accessible gas stop between St. Louis and Memphis. Fox notes that Cape is about halfway and it would be perfect........

Mississippi River At Trempealeau, Wisconsin Lock Chamber At Lock & Dam No.6 Emptied For Repairs........
Ever since the navigation season along the Mississippi River ended back on November 28th, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been working on making repairs to the lock chamber at Lock and Dam No.6 at Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
Over the years, barge traffic and weather has served to deteriorate the lock, which was completed in the 1930s. Currently, the lock chamber at Lock and Dam No.6 has been dewatered for repairs.
The repair work will include making concrete repairs to the vertical lock walls and raising all four of the miter gates to inspect and or replace the pintle balls and bushings the gates are mounted on........

Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota Volunteers Collect To 13,000 Pieces Of Trash........
A group of environmental organizations and volunteers from around the community found close to 13,000 pieces of trash in and around the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota as part of a brief pilot study conducted earlier this year.
About 75 percent of the 12,997 items logged in St. Paul were plastic, with food wrappers, foam fragments, plastic bags and plastic bottles being among the most common items found.
St. Paul, St. Louis and Baton Rouge all participated as pilot cities in this collaborative effort, which organizers described as the "first ever snapshot of the state of plastic pollution along the Mississippi River"........

Gulf Of Mexico Dead Zone Illinois One Of Biggest Contributors To The Gulf Dead Zone........
According to modeling from the U.S. Geological Survey, Illinois is one of the greatest contributors to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, as nutrients from sewage treatment plants, farm fertilizer and manure eventually find their way to the Mississippi River.
The modeling indicates that Illinois sends the most phosphorous to the Gulf and is the second largest contributor of nitrogen. Fertilizer is the greatest source of nutrients.
Illinois is missing goals set to reduce nutrients and meet a goal set by a federal task force to reduce the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico's five year average size by thousands of square miles........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri The Bicentennial Bridge Officially Opened........
On Monday, hundreds of visitors enjoyed a new view of Jefferson City and the Missouri River after crossing the newly completed Bicentennial Bridge linking the statehouse to the Missouri River.
Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin was joined by Governor Mike Parson and other officials during a ceremony officially opening the bridge, touting the decades-long project as the perfect finale for the 200th anniversary of Missouri's statehood.
The nearly $5 million project was the largest approved by the Bicentennial Commission. The span was sponsored by the DeLong family, who put up $3.5 million for the project over the years. Union Pacific announced it's $200,000 sponsorship earlier in the year, and several local and state benefactors........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer ePropulsion Reports Sales, Dealer Growth........
Electric outboard manufacturer ePropulsion reports that they have increased their U.S. dealer network by 60 percent during 2021. The company says this has resulted in a year-over-year sales increase for all ePropulsion motors of over 200 percent, with sales of the Spirit series quadrupling.
Danny Tao, co-founder and CEO of ePropulsion says that they are thrilled by the increase in interest in their motors by both consumers and original equipment manufacturers.
Chris Ponnwitz, electric market manager, Mack Boring & Parts Company, ePropulsion's U.S. distribution partner says that this was a banner year for ePropulsion, with an incredible launch of the new product line, valuable and exciting meetings with consumers and partners and year-end projections make 2021 the best year yet........

Mississippi River History History Of Commerce Along The Mississippi River........
When Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who eventually became better known as Mark Twain, was working on steamboats along the Mississippi River, it was the golden age of the steamboat trade along the river. By 1880, railroads surpasses steamboats as the main mover of commerce.
These days, there is plenty of commercial traffic along the Mississippi River, as barges move about 175 million tons of freight each year through a series of 29 locks and dams that help maintain a 9 foot navigation channel from Minneapolis, Minnesota and the Gulf of Mexico.
The Mississippi River was not always so navigable to large vessels. Prior to the arrival of Europeans and Americans began molding the river to suit their needs, it was integral to the lives of Native Americans. It was their highway as well as their supermarket........
