New, Streamlined Arch Grounds Plans To Be Unveiled........

While two presidential cabinet members were in St. Louis to advocate progress on the nearly $600 million Gateway Arch grounds project, Tom Bradley, superintendent of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial announced that in January, the public would get a look at a scaled down, leaner project.  Bradley later recanted that statement, explaining that in January, an outline of what can be completed by 2015 will be released........

Levee Repairs Delayed By Red Tape........

Work to repair 64 miles worth of levees in the Metro East is ready to begin in early 2012, however, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has not approved the project's design.  The Corps has not indicated when they would approve the plan.  Part of the holdup is that the Corps is studying the plan, and has also called for an outside agency to conduct an independent review.  A representative stated the Corps would approve a permit application within 120 days of receiving a completed application package........

What Do Them Windmills Do ?

If you run across Swing Set out on the water, there is no mistaking her for another vessel if you notice the "windmills" sprouting from the top of the radar arch. Actually they are not windmills at all because, well, windmills mill grain by virtue of wind energy. (Think of those Dutch windmills you see in all those pictures at the art museum.) These are Air-X Marine Wind Generators, and they produce electricity to be stored in battery banks to be used as required by the various systems on board. This post is about how we arrived at this solution to the issue of providing power for long term living aboard "on the hook".
Wind generators have been in use on sailboats for years. The line on them is that are noisy, but as that may have applied to older models, new blade design has rendered the new generators to by very quiet, especially compared to the exhaust noise of a diesel generator. Once we decided upon living aboard and life on the hook, providing power without the constant aid of our Westerbeke diesel generator became one problem to solve. Naturally solar power comes to mind. I had considered having our local stainless steel fabricator, "Little John", make something like half of a T-top, coming off aft of the radar arch, which would provide room for one two foot by four foot solar panel. One panel of this size can provide 80 to 100 amps of electricity at its optimal output, the middle of the day with little clouds. One person suggested mounting panels above the bimini as we leave it up all of the time. There is room for three panels above the bimini, going that route we could claim 240-300 amps. Sounds like a lot, right? I'm no electrician, and I am in over my head here in some of the technical aspects of this application, but once you convert amps to watts, the numbers are not that impressive. Adding the extra weight to the bimini frame also seemed problematical.
I had been reading about the Air-X Marine units and although a fair amount of wind is required before you can even start making power, (It's 7 M.P.H.) if the wind is constant, power will be generated all day and all night. It adds up. At maximum output, which is a 35 M.P.H. wind, each Air-X unit provides 400 amps. No one really wants to spend much time at an anchorage in a 35 M.P.H. wind, but even as the power output is less as the wind is less, the bang for the buck is way better with wind generation for our situation.
One houseboat at a neighboring harbor has one of these Air-X units installed which initially gave me the idea to apply this concept to a powered vessel. The houseboat has the Air-X unit properly mounted on a pole, supported by guy wires. Some things that need to be considered when mounting something like this anywhere is that you need to keep them in an area where coming in contact with them with your head is avoided at all cost. Those carbon fiber blades would give you a haircut you would never forget. Height above the waterline is also an issue, particularly if you are considering doing "The Loop", which we are, and if there are any fixed bridges on your route anywhere. The T-top mounting method still seemed viable, and two Air-X units mounted on each side with one solar panel in the middle was considered.
When you attempt a project like this, it helps to have people involved who have done it before. No one in our area has installed a wind generator, at least no one that I had talked to.
I discussed the project with a few boatyard owners, and although all were willing, a chance meeting with the service manager of Bloch Marine at our local West Marine one afternoon turned out to be a fortunate coincidence. J.D. Schmid was involved with the local Marine Max dealership and when they left the area, John Bloch of Bloch Marine hired J.D. to oversee the service department of the boatyard that we primarily dealt with. We got to talking about our possibility of utilizing wind generators as a power source on Swing Set, along with combining a solar panel. Now, J.D. is one of the most enthusiastic people you will meet, and once he got to considering the project, I was even more sold on the idea. Fall was approaching, and over the winter was a good time for a project like this, and the fact that one of Bloch's best guys, Dave Ludwig, would be assigned as the electrician/installer, the deal was sealed.
Once I found the best deal on two Air-X Marine units (at Defender Marine) and they were shipped to me, the three of us got together and started to formulate a plan.

Extend your Christmas tree's life; help create habitats for fish

Don't let your Christmas tree go to waste this year after the holidays. The St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is encouraging local citizens to participate in the annual Christmas tree recycling program.

Donated Christmas trees are bundled together in small groups and submerged in lakes at select locations in Missouri and Illinois. These shelters provide fish with breeding areas and escape cover, proving invaluable to not only the fisheries but to anglers as well.

Artificial or flocked trees (with artificial snow) cannot be accepted. Please remove all tinsel, decorations, stands and plastic bags from the tree before delivering it to the designated collection sites.

St. Louis District drop-of location information:

Mark Twain Lake: Christmas trees can be brought to a collection site at John Spalding Boat Ramp. Christmas trees will be accepted at this location until January 31, 2011.

Structures will be placed in Mark Twain Lake in mid-March by Corps of Engineers employees, and volunteers. Anyone wishing to volunteer or wanting more information should contact Brad Stamp at the Mark Twain Lake Project Office at (573) 735-4097.

News Release From BoatUS

Alcohol & Boat Engines, Is There Another Way?
By Ryck Lydecker

Federal law says the nation must increase its "biofuel" capacity dramatically in the next decade, but does it have to be ethanol?

It's zero-dark-hundred at an undisclosed marina somewhere on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Two men noiselessly transfer gear from the covered bed of a pickup truck to the cockpit of the non-descript center-console outboard at dockside. Quickly they stow hoses, canisters, and meters, plus vinyl pouches that sprout tubing with stainless-steel fittings. Two others silently remove unmarked barrels from a storage shed, wheeling them toward the boat.

Finally the men whisk a secret weapon known only as "MPSS" aboard, a white metal cabinet the size of a large ice chest. Laid flat on the cockpit sole, it's below sight from curious eyes that may pass in another boat, or attempt to spy from shore.

Once loaded, two of the team begins rigging the MPSS to its attendant vinyl bag, the hoses tracing umbilicals to the exhaust system of the 175-hp Evinrude E-Tec engine on the transom. It takes more time to rig a battery of sensors — from water temperature and barometric pressure, to fuel flow and boat speed — but eventually and with little fanfare, the boat heads for a quiet creek that shall remain nameless. Once on the unmarked, one-mile-course track, the boat begins a repetitious navigation routine — up and back, up and back — as team members monitor the MPSS, now sucking samples of engine exhaust into the pouch. ... US Coast Guard

Coast Guard begins ice breaking operation in western Great Lakes

Operation Taconite is the largest domestic ice breaking operation

CLEVELAND The U.S. Coast Guard began ice breaking operations Wednesday as part of Operation Taconite, in response to colder temperatures and ice growth in the western Great Lakes region.

Coordinated by Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Operation Taconite is the Coast Guards largest domestic ice breaking operation, encompassing lakes Superior and Michigan, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, and northern Lake Huron.

A second ice breaking operation, Operation Coal Shovel, will begin at a later date. Operation Coal Shovel takes place in the eastern Great Lakes region, including lakes Erie and Ontario, the Detroit and St. Clair rivers, Lake St. Clair, and southern Lake Huron.

The Coast Guard is dedicated to ensuring a safe, efficient and navigable waterway system that supports domestic commerce and international trade, while at the same time mitigating economic risks caused by ice in the maritime environment. The Coast Guard works closely with the Canadian Coast Guard and maritime industry representatives to ensure critical shipping paths are open for transit.

Domestic ice breaking is normally conducted for four basic purposes: search and rescue, urgent response to vessels beset by ice, assisting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with community service requests (including flood relief), and facilitation of navigation to meet the reasonable demands of commerce.

As a result of the operation, certain waterways may close after consideration is given to the protection of the marine environment, waterway improvements, aids to navigation, the need for cross-channel traffic (e.g. ferries) and the availability of icebreakers. Another important consideration is the safety of residents of Great Lakes islands and other remote locations, who, in the course of their daily business, use naturally formed ice bridges for transportation to and from the mainland.

The Coast Guard would like to advise all recreational ice users that there are currently no channel closures, and to plan their activities carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels. Recreational users and island residents should stay tuned to local media resources for the status of waterway closures.

Further inquiries can be made by phone to Mark Gill at 906-635-3299 or to Vessel Traffic Service St. Marys River at 906-635-3232.

 Missouri River Flooding Aftermath

Panel Finds No Blame In Corps Actions........

On Tuesday, an expert panel released a report finding that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did it's best in dealing with the flooding along the Missouri River this year.  The report added that proposed procedural changes could help avert a repeat of the 2011 flooding.  The experts state that their first recommendation would be to guarantee that federal funding would available to properly maintain and repair the current flood protection infrastructure........

Still More Stuff, Even Less Room

While on the subject of creating storage room, related to you in the previous post, I'll fill you in on some other decisions we had to make to find room on Swing Set for more storage. Early in the Spring of 2011 we put our "Dock-o-minium" up for sale at the Duck Club Yacht Club. We were lucky to find a buyer early on and arranged a closing date to suit us and the buyer. I included our two 6' long dock boxes in the sale as we surely didn't have room for them on the boat.
We arranged a lease with another Duck Club dock owner and it was an easy move to another slip, but what about all that stuff in those two dock boxes?

For a while the back of our Explorer looked like the Sanford and Son truck, full of the things I couldn't readily find room for aboard Swing Set. Being an older Sea Ray, Swing Set had a floor plan on the flybridge that was not nearly as efficient as the newer models. The aft section of the bridge consisted of a sunpad. The radar arch and the back portion of the bimini blocked most of the sun for this area, so the pad was taken out long ago and a couple of deck chairs filled the space. (We were able to utilize some of the vinyl from both the flybridge pad and the bow pads to re-upholster a cockpit bench seat so a perfect match was achieved. Think twice about just pitching those unwanted sun pads, and especially, save the zippers.) We purchased a 4' long dock box that fit perfectly in this area. Since the Igloo cooler that occupied the cockpit was assigned to the dingy as a seat, there was room in the cockpit now for the two West Marine deck chairs. These deck chairs quickly became everyones favorite place to sit. I had originally had fantasies of putting two fold-up bicycles in this box, or for a short delusional moment, thought I could fit a fold-up mini bike in this space. Once I realized what a chore it would be to wrestle a 64 pound mini bike from the bridge to the dinghy, then to the shore, I quickly dismissed the idea of a mini-bike on the boat. But I sure like mini-bikes! The idea of bicycles finally faded once I realized the space they would require and there would still be no room for all the stuff that had become homeless once the two 6' dock boxes were no longer ours. Still thinking about the bicycles though.

In this view you can see the small dock box on the flybridge. In it we keep all of our boat washing supplies like buckets, brushes, soap, etc. Waxing supplies like three orbital polishers and well, wax and cleaners take up a fair amount of room. A wet-vac (a necessity) and a good supply of "boat towels" fill the rest of the space.
Some other changes we made on Swing Set can be seen in this picture. Starting at the bottom you can see the rollers for our dinghy brackets, and the brackets themselves. We attached a Magna Grill to one of the dinghy brackets. (We got a round one so a frying pan or soup kettle for boiling lobster fits nicely on it.) There is a rod holder installed on each side of the cockpit and another two attached to the railings on each side of the flybridge. Our throwable life ring was moved to a more convenient location for deploying, and behind it is a hose rack with enough hose to reach all the areas on board from bow to stern. Some additional dock line hangers were placed on the bridge and in the cockpit. An Engel cooler was placed on the bridge next to the dock box when the desired supply for cold beer exceeds the limits of our refrigerator in the galley. You can also see a clothes line stretched from one side of the flybridge to the other, complete with wooden clothes pins. It's not pretty, but very functional.
Last but not least are those two wind generators at the very top of the picture, spinning their little guts out. The story concerning the acquisition and installation of those wind generators will be in an upcoming post. If the phrase, "Curb your enthusiasm" hasn't already been used for a T.V. show, I would use it here.

 Upper Missouri River Reservoirs

Corps Ahead Of Spring Runoff Curve........

A dry fall across the northern Plains states has helped the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers get ahead of schedule in the releases of water from the upper Missouri River reservoirs.  According to the chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, Jody Farhat, reservoir levels will reach the early March targets by the end of December.  This will leave plenty of room in the six reservoirs for winter runoff and spring rainfall........

What Are We Going to Do With All of Our "Stuff"?

The fall/winter of 2010 was a busy time in regard to outfitting Swing Set for extended cruising and living aboard. One major decision we had to make was whether or not to convert our second stateroom into an office/chartroom/storage area. Swing Set had a standard two stateroom layout at delivery. The second stateroom was equipped with two twin size bunks that would convert into a king size with a filler, a nightstand, and a small settee and hanging locker with a phone booth sized stand up area. While having overnight guests aboard is always a consideration while we are enjoying our boat on the weekends, having room to conduct personal business at a desk and having storage room for the tools and parts we thought we would require for full time living aboard seemed to be more of a necessity. We had enlarged the settee in the salon already which would sleep one person very comfortably, and really, lots of times guests would opt to sleep on a pallet placed on the salon floor due to better air movement, although there was always the risk of stepping on a head or leg when the early rising Captain stirred in the mornings.
Once we decide to remove the second stateroom, we had to decide how to go about outfitting our "Chart Room" as we began to call it. I had considered "stick building" the furniture, which would have given us some weight savings, but ultimately I decided to have cabinets custom built with the result being a more sturdy installation.
After spending a great deal of time getting measurements, lots and lots of measurements, I settled on a local cabinet manufacturer to build the cabinets. We picked a style that matched the decor and color of the interior that already existed on Swing Set, although the galley and salon cabinets are a Formica finish, the oak trim accents were copied, as well as the cabinet hardware. We contracted for an extra gallery pantry, an overhead cabinet for the Chart Room bulkhead, two base "parts cabinets" and a desk with a cabinet to fit a printer and a hanging file drawer and more drawers for the miscellaneous things that seem to just show up.
Everything was made with solid oak and oak veneers over plywood, no particle board was used.
We have already demolished most of the interior of the second stateroom which needed to be, but we had no idea how much out of square the room was, nor how uneven the cabin sole was. It was a bit unnerving to attack thousands of dollars of new cabinetry with a jigsaw, but that's exactly what I had to do to get a proper fit.

I won't show photos of every step, but this gives you an idea of the process. One thing we had to consider was that the door to this room was only 18" wide, so the design had to take this into consideration. The desk was made in three parts and assembled once placed inside the room. To the left of the desk, which is toward the stern, a space was left for a large toolbox, and more spare parts. A space was found in the bow, under the master bunk, for our spare props which had been under one of the bunks in the second stateroom.

A custom door and frame was made to fit athwartships connecting the desk with the cabinets on the port side of the "room". I did by best to leave a lot of the basic cabinets in tact, not only for cost savings, but for aesthetic integrity. I wanted a factory look and I think I got it.

I don't have a wide angled lens like a boating magazine would use, giving a false impression of a vast space where there isn't one, but here ya go, almost done. We decided to use an ottoman for the desk chair, as we can stow it in the knee space of the desk when we aren't using it, and the ottoman even has a compartment for more storage as there never seems to be enough of it.

Here is another view. We kept the small settee intact, as well as the hanging locker with mirror door above it. Our desktop computer will fit nicely on the desk. There is an opening port above the desk and a Bora 12 volt fan was installed to help keep a breeze going.
The result of this project was a cozy area that looks like a factory installation, and it provides a separate place for conducting "household" business aboard a boat and a place where I can continue to write this blog once we move aboard.

By 1850, beavers were all but extinct from Illinois waters.  In 1929, the beaver was re-introduced into northwestern Illinois, with more stockings to follow throughout the 1930's.  Fast forward to modern times, and beavers are common to every Illinois county.  Residents around Lake Springfield are having problems with beavers eating not only trees and shrubs, but the rodents are gnawing up boat docks as well........

U.S. Coast Guard

US Coast Guard Pic

San Miguel rescue

SAN PEDRO, Calif. - The Coast Guard rescued three commercial fishermen after their 33-foot vessel became disabled and began drifting dangerously close to the rocks off of the westernmost point of San Miguel Island in the Channel Islands chain, at about 4 p.m. Sunday. A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles hoisted the trio and flew them back to Santa Barbara, Calif., with no injuries. The drama began when the commercial fishing boat, based out of Santa Barbara, became disabled about 100 yards from the rocks. ÊThe men dropped an anchor but it quickly broke free and the second anchor started to drag in the direction of the shoreline. ÊThe master radioed the Coast Guard for help at about 2:30 p.m. Before hoisting the men, the Coast Guard directed them to set off their Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon so Command Center and environmental response personnel could keep tabs of the vessel. ÊThe last position of the boat was roughly 35 yards from the rocks. Coast Guard environmental response personnel are monitoring the vessel because it is reported to have about 40 gallons of fuel onboard and may come aground in an environmentally sensitive area.

YesterYear's River Pictures of the Day in 2007 ------ was from Capt'n Mark Newlin

Bill,
This is me on the Meramec in Fenton near our house. I'm on a 20 year old "Sail-board" that I found at a second hand shop. I may even take it up on the Mississippi this summer. As expensive as gas is, I'm sure glad to have water-toys that don't use any. I'm starting to see more kayakers than powerboats some days.

 It's All About the Dinghy

When I started looking for a new dinghy I was sure that I wanted a rigid inflatable. That is, a fiberglass hull with an inflatable collar. I also wanted the dinghy to be white. It didn't take long to find one, and I found it on eBay. Some outfit in New York had purchased the complete inventory of one year old Mercury dinghies from another supplier that was going out of business. We got a dinghy for about 1/2 the price of the current model year, but still new and shipped in the crate to Little John's shop. I found a one year old Mercury 15 H.P. four-stroke outboard at Bass Pro Shop, still new with a 3 year warranty. 15 H.P. is the maximum horse power for this model dinghy, and there is basically no weight difference over a 10 H.P. engine. With one person aboard, our dinghy runs a respectable 26 M.P.H., verified by GPS, thank you very much.

Here I am instructing our friend Karen about the finer points of our dinghy. Notice how Karen is ignoring me completely and texting for help on her smart phone.

Backing up a little, after the dinghy was delivered to Little John's shop, (Little John is a local stainless steel fabricator. He has custom made over 50 dinghy brackets and also fabricates and installs custom railings for all types of boats, most notably, Gibson Houseboats in the area that have stainless rails were usually made by "Little John" Bicknese.), I took Swing Set over to Woodland Marina. Woodland is one of the oldest and largest Marinas in our area, the Alton Pool of the Mississippi. Little John lives adjacent to Woodland Harbor and I was able to get a temporary slip right across the road from where Little John's shop is.
We started on a Monday, and using aluminum conduit for a pattern, Little John custom bent the 1" and 1 -1/4" stainless stock into our dinghy brackets. The major tubes are double walled for strength and everything is through bolted.

Here are the finished brackets. With the dinghy close at hand for measuring, we were able to get a better fit. The Weaver brackets on the swim platform were removed and replaced by custom made rollers. With a hook attached at the end of each bracket fastened to a harness on the dinghy, it's easy to winch up the dingy, which rolls up over the edge of the swim platform, into a position that's high enough above the water and is as close to the transom as possible.

Here's Swing Set back at her home slip with the dinghy in place. The whole outfit weighs around 400 pounds, with 6 gallons of fuel on board. Some trailering straps keep the dinghy from "swinging" when underway. The drain plug is left open when the dinghy is stored so that rain water doesn't accumulate. The swim platform can still be used and there is room to also use the transom door as the bow of the dinghy is narrow at the end where the door is.

Here you can see the Weaver stand off brackets attached to the dinghy. The stand off rods probably don't help stabilize the dinghy all that much, the two straps do that, but they were already on

It took a total of three full days to complete the work on the dinghy brackets. Here is Rosie aboard Swing Set at the 2010 Blessing of the Fleet where we had a slip at My River Home, a well known Marina in Portage Des Souix where the blessing is held. You can see the custom made rollers in this view, on the swim platform. The dinghy can be deployed by one person very easily in less than a couple of minutes, and can be retrieved and hoisted up by one person in the same amount of time.
In the interest of full disclosure, Swing Set was spared any direct blessings being performed on this day, preferring for us to allow providence alone chart the welfare of our vessel.

Missouri River Flood Aftermath

    Animals Affected By Flooding Too........

While the flooding of the Missouri River affected residents and their dwellings near the river, some four legged river residents have been displaced as well.  Conservationists and river observers have noticed that beavers have relocated, and this has affected trees they feed upon as well.  In some locations, beavers were forced to move more than 150 feet higher during the flooding.  As the river receded, some of the beavers moved back to lower spots........

Mississippi River Near New Madrid, Missouri

The Facts And Fiction Of The New Madrid Earthquakes........

There were at least three major earthquakes On December 16, 1811, January 23, and February 7, 1812, followed by hundreds of aftershocks.   Eyewitnesses told tales of the earth spouting sand and coal into the air, as well as waterfalls along the Mississippi River.  Sources at the Tennessee State Library and Archives state that the Mississippi River shortly flowed backwards as the riverbed bucked, creating waves that swamped boats, and collapsed riverbanks........

LED Lighting Ads To Boat Safety, Creates Exotic Ambiance On Night Cruises

LED lights for boat cabins and cockpits can add exotic atmosphere to your nighttime cruises, or will enliven parties that you host onboard.

LED lighting for cockpits can be purchased in extensive ropes that you can install without a great deal of difficulty. If you’re at all mechanically inclined, you can install LED lights in your boat in just several hours using basic tools most people keep around the house.

Clean the area where you intend to install your lights with rubbing alcohol and a clean, lint-free cloth. Your best bet is to install lights where they will be out of view, but the light they emit will be clearly seen. Place them under ledges on storage compartments or under tabletops or seats.

Prepare the surface with adhesion promoter pads, which work on Fiberglas, plastic and metal – they help adhesive tape create a sturdier bond with the surface. Use double-sided bonding tape on the area where you will mount the lights.

Connect the light bars with the shrink tubing that comes in the lighting kit, and keep going until it’s the length you’re looking for. You can cut the tubes to fit the proper length, then seal them with a good marine sealant.

Heat from an ordinary blow drier will seal connections and make the tubing shrink to a tight fit. Connect the wiring to the power source, and tie up all leftover wiring so it stays in place. Keep the area where you mounted the lights dry for at least 72 hours to allow the tape to fully adhere to the surface.

Apart from installing LEDs inside your boat, you might also want to place some of the same lighting on your boat trailer. Driving with your boat trailer at night requires that you have functioning side marker lights, that let motorist know how wide your boat trailer is, and brake lights, which alert other drivers when your are stopping. Trailer illumination can be accomplished with LED lights or traditional light bulbs. Check with your state regulations to determine what requirements are in place for trailer lighting arrays.

With the amount of jostling and road travel vibrations that they endure over the course of a year, it’s a wonder that boat trailer lights work at all. In addition to the not-so-gentle treatment they receive on the road, trailer break lights are often submerged in the water when launching your boat or bringing it in.

It’s only natural to expect that the corrosive power of moisture will eventually cause connections to fray and break down. No one wants to be out on the road with a trailer that has malfunctioning brake lights. Use waterproof trailer lights, which are made with seals that keep water out, or submersible lights, which are not waterproof, but use an air pocket to keep water out of the lights when submerged. Either one will help increase the lifespan of your trailer lights and save you more work in the future.

  Boat Manufacturer

Charges Won't Be Filed In Fatal Boat Sinking........

On Tuesday, Snohomish County, Washington deputy prosecutor Ed Stemler stated that there was not sufficient evidence proving a boat builder was criminally liable in the drowning death of a woman.  Authorities believe that boat builder, Phillip G. Warnock knowingly sold a vessel manufactured with non-marine, open celled foam. Two years ago, Cindy Tate was killed on Lake Stevens, when the boat she was in took a wave over the bow, swamping the boat.  The boat sank within two minutes........

Teaching an old dredge new tricks: Army's oldest dredge creates new habitat

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Dec. 14, 2011) -- The endangered Least Tern has a new island to call home on the Mississippi River thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - St. Louis District, the Dredge Potter and a flexible, floating dredge pipe.

Historically, the Least Tern nested on sandbars along the Mississippi River. The establishment of navigational pools, repeated flooding and an increase in recreational activities along the river has led to the decline of the population.

As part of a pilot project during this year's dredging season, the St. Louis District reused dredged material to build small islands using a flexible floating dredge pipe.

"The flexible floating dredge pipe provides the St. Louis District opportunities to create a diversity of aquatic habitats such as sand islands and shallow water habitats in areas where it may not be possible without the use of dredged material," Brian Johnson, biologist with the St. Louis District said.

Each year dredging is performed on the Mississippi River in order to keep it open to the Congressionally mandated depth for river traffic. Historically, dredged material placement locations and options have been limited by both equipment constraints and cost.

When feasible, dredged material is recycled for beneficial uses within the river. Reuse is the preferred approach by the Corps of Engineers, and the St. Louis District is always seeking out innovative and creative ways to accomplish this task.

"Our partners and stakeholders have challenged us to find more ways to reuse dredged material in an environmentally friendly way," Johnson said.

The Potter crew spent most of the off season prepping the dredge for the use of the flexible floating dredge pipe.

"It took a lot of planning ahead and creative ideas to make this happen," Lance Engle dredge manager with the St. Louis District said.

Traditionally, the use of standard dredging practices limited the opportunity to reuse dredged material as sandbar or island habitat because of the physical limits of the rigid metal disposal pipe that is used.

"Normally dredged material is side-cast along the main channel border in a linear fashion, resulting in a long, narrow disposal bar that is limited in size, elevation, and location," Engle explained.

A St. Louis District experiment with flexible floating dredge pipe in 2005 led to the idea of using it to create islands and sandbars on the Middle Mississippi River. Demonstration projects by the New Orleans and Mobile Districts helped develop the idea and prepare the dredge crew for the new challenge.

The pipe's flexibility allows the Dredge Potter to place dredged material in a specific location as it moves. This allows material to build up to create sandbars and island habitats in various shapes, sizes and elevations in the Middle Mississippi River while maintaining the navigation channel.

These types of habitats are essential for the nesting and spawning of various fish and wildlife species such as the Least Tern.

"The new method allows creation of more diverse environments for wildlife than traditional dredging methods," Johnson added. "These islands are often remote, providing protection from predators, boats and humans."

The flexible floating dredge pipe allows the St. Louis District to keep the river safe and open for navigation in an environmentally sensitive way.

"In the future, we hope this will be the way we do business," Johnson said. "Eventually we hope to use the Dredge Potter not only for navigational purposes but for environmental management purposes as well."

Missouri River Flood Preparation

Corps Trying To Avoid Flooding Repeat........

Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advised the Governors of the Missouri River states that in an effort to avoid a repeat of 2011's massive floods, the Corps is looking for more water storage in the upstream reservoirs.  Within the next week, the Corps Brig. Gen. John McMahon has a report due containing specific recommendations to achieve this goal.  The suggestions will need to balance wildlife, shipping, recreation and droughts with the flood control measures........

Mississippi River Shipping

    This Year, Shipping Traffic Normal........

The 2011 shipping season on the Mississippi River has drawn to a close, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that shipping traffic for the year was about average.  The shipping season started late due to flooding, but it was able to end late because of warm fall temperatures.  There was an increase in demand for shipments of grain and cement, while coal shipments on the river were down........

Missouri River Near Bismarck, North Dakota

Sandbars May Cause Issues Come Spring........

Only four short months ago, the level of the Missouri River was creeping up on 20 feet, but now it is just over four feet deep.  At this time, the releases through the Garrison Dam are flowing 18,000 cubic feet per second.  Officials are concerned that excess sand deposited during the flooding will cause issues on the Missouri River when ice flows from it's tributaries into the Missouri River........

News Release From BoatUS

Refrigerator-Size Fish Earn Top Spots in BoatUS Angler's Fishing Photo Contest

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 14, 2011 – Photos of a 67-inch tarpon and a 45-inch pike have made two anglers, Sean Riley of New Port Richey, FL, and Brian Papenhagen of Blissfield, MI, grand prize winners in the 2011 BoatUS Angler Catch of the Month fishing photo contest. Their grand prize includes a high quality fish replica from Mount This! Fish Company that specializes in hand-painted fiberglass replicas and a gift certificate from BoatNameGear.com.

Riley and Papenhagen will also have their BoatUS Angler on-the-water and roadside assistance towing plan upgraded to “Unlimited” status, which can help these anglers 24-hours a day with breakdowns on the water and will tow a disabled boat trailer and tow vehicle up to 100 miles to your home, repair facility or other safe spot.

Riley spotted his fish last summer in a school of five tarpon running for mullet while trolling the shallows just off the beach on Florida’s Anclote Key. Once the refrigerator-sized fish was hooked, it made a dash for the sky and “felt like a huge log,” said Riley, heating up his reel during the hour-long battle. The silvery behemoth headed straight for the Gulf and did a U-turn before Riley could land it. The fish was the biggest yet for the angler, who gently revived the giant before releasing it.

Papenhagen’s pike was caught last spring on a large red and white Daredevil at Wrong Lake, Manitoba. A catch-and-release lake accessible only by floatplane, Papenhagen was told by a guide to hit the lake’s incoming streams, where Pike are known to forage for fingerlings. Once Papenhagen found his spot, the lunker struck taking nearly all the line out of the reel four times as it dove repeatedly to the safety of lake’s bottom trying to wait it out. For Papenhagen, this was the “right” fish on Wrong Lake to earn him a full-scale replica.

Next year's contest starts in April 2012. For more information on BoatUS Angler and the fishing photo contest, go to www.BoatUSAngler.com.
