Ole' Boys Strikes Again!

Pictures of the Day ... were sent to us by Capt'n Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Bill,

Here are some pics of the latest "barn find" from the Ole' Boys Boat Club. I thought I'd show your readers some of the boats we haul out of pergatory and then update them from time to time on the progress of the restorations.

This one is a 1961 Larson, 16' Runabout. We got it from it's original owner and it actually runs! (quite a step up for us!!) All the original hardware is there and it has it's original 4 cyl Volvo I/O engine & outdrive. This one was found by Dale Roth, but we have scouts out everywhere!

Look for this great old boat sometime in the future, you won't believe how she's gonna look once we get done with her!

Dave Bullington
Yacht Club of St. Louis

RiverBill says.......  Great find !  Keep us updated on her restoration !

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day

Yesteryear's Pic of the Day from 2005  .....was taken by Capt'n (of the camera) Pat Reid of Crystal Photography.

It's a shot looking down Sandy Slough at a tow heading up-river towards Winfield Lock and Dam.   Notice how low the water is right now in the slough.  There is a bit of ice forming in the shallow areas of the slough and deeper water is still open.

Arrival At Camp River Dubois This Weekend........

This weekend, the Lewis and Clark Historic Site in Hartford, Illinois will host the "Arrival at Camp River Dubois" activities.  The activities will run Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.  On January 18, 1803, the first federal expedition to inspect lands west of the Mississippi River was proposed by President Thomas Jefferson.  About a year later, Lewis and Clark arrived at the Riverbend to winter prior to starting their journey........

Missouri River Flood Aftermath

Senators Calling For Investigation Of Corps, Flood........

The senators of the states along the Missouri River recently penned a letter, requesting that the Government Accountability Office look into whether mistakes made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contributed to last summer's massive flooding.  The senators are also curious if the changes to the Corp's river operation plans will prevent future flooding.  The letter asserts that the Corps has placed too much emphasis on fish and wildlife in their decision making processes........

The Boaters' Holiday Gift Guide

By Chris Landers

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum? Maybe. But perhaps it's time to branch out, and give the boater on your list something a little more interesting.

Switlik MOM 600 Throwable Life Raft
You know those square seat cushions that double as flotation devices? Well, the MOM 600 is kind of like those, until it hits the water. Then it inflates into a 10-square-foot "rescue platform," with a strobe light, safety knife, sea anchor, and optional 5-foot-tall yellow pylon. So actually, it's nothing like those floating seat cushions, except that you can sit on it when it's not in use. The MOM 600 isn't Coast Guard-approved, and it isn't a full-fledged enclosed life raft — Switlik markets it as man-overboard and coastal-sailing equipment — but it's tough to think of a situation where the MOM 600 wouldn't be handier than a seat cushion. OK, maybe at a football stadium. ($999.00; www.switlik.com)

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Dock Owners:  Drawdown Time........

Amren Missouri is advising dock owners at the Lake of the Ozarks that it is time to prepare their docks for winter weather conditions, as well as the annual lake level drawdown, which will begin shortly.  Amren Missouri lowers the lake level in the winter months to make room for runoff that spring rains will bring.  The drawdown is slated to start on January 1, 2012, with a target level of 654 feet expected to be achieved by mid-February........

Schools invited to fight litter through

“No MOre Trash!” contest

JEFFERSON CITY Mo – Missouri elementary, middle and home school students K-8 are invited to help in the fight against litter in the Show-Me State -- and to have creative and educational fun -- by participating in the 2012 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) as part of the state’s “No MOre Trash!” campaign to raise awareness about Missouri's litter problem and to discourage littering.

The contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative media. Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules and effective use of theme and logo.

“In addition to teaching kids about how litter hurts them, their families, community and the environment, first-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools,” said MDC No MOre Trash! Coordinator Joe Jerek. “All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of $600 awarded to the sponsoring school, and a trophy.”

Jerek added that there is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must simply email a completed entry form and up to three photos of the completed trash can (with and without participating students) to nomoretrash@mdc.mo.gov. Email submissions are required. Deadline for entries is March 5.

“Littering isn’t just ugly, it hurts wildlife and the environment, it costs Missourians millions of tax dollars each year and it’s illegal,” Jerek said. He added that MDC spends almost $1 million a year to clean litter from conservation areas and other department locations and MoDOT spends more than $5 million each year cleaning litter from Missouri’s roadsides.

Contest rules, entry forms, the “No MOre Trash!” logo, past contest winners, facts on litter and educational information are available at www.nomoretrash.org. For more information email nomoretrash@mdc.mo.gov.

Missouri River Flood Outlook

NOAA Says Flooding Likely For 2012........

NOAA forecasters are predicting that 2012 will likely be another year of flooding along the Missouri River.  Doug Kluck, Regional Climate Services Director, stated that the flooding outlook is not likely to be anything like the floods of 2011.  However, Kluck did give 50/50 odds on flooding at this point.  At this time last year, lands surrounding the Upper Missouri River Valley were under several inches of snow, which combined with a rainy spring to cause the flooding........

Levee Repair Work To Shut Down........

Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were shutting down repair work on the Birds Point Levee.  The levee was intentionally breached to relieve water pressure from the flooding Mississippi River that was a threat to nearby Cairo, Illinois.  The repairs are being stopped due to forecasts predicting sustained high River levels and more rain.  Before completely stopping work, the Corps will utilize sandbags to bring the levee up to 55 feet........

Missouri River Levees

Levee Dropped From Repair Program Reinstated........

Paul Markt, president of the Forest City Levee District, stated that a levee that had been dropped from a federal repair program  prior to being damaged by floodwaters has been reinstated into the program.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had dropped the levee from the program because a pipe used to pump water from the protected side of the levee back into the river is routed through the levee as opposed to over it.  Missouri Governor Jay Nixon added that the Corps made the right choice........

River History....

December 07, 2009 in River History

A news story from waow.com reported that Jake Stachovak was prepping for the trip of a lifetime: Paddle a sea kayak 5,000 miles around the eastern portion of the United States.

Jake was planning to depart from Portage, Wisconsin, paddle down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, eventually returning to Portage. He had to change his plans because of the very cold weather in the northern United Sates and showed up in St. Louis a few days later to start his journey.

Yesteryear's Pic of the Day from 2009...... was from Captain Greg Sadowski, who hails out of Woodland Marina.  Greg and crew are on another river delivery trip.

Bill,

Here's a picture of the "Delta Queen", and a few others.
I took this picture from the "Naples Princess" late yesterday as we passed through New Orleans on the Mississippi River.

It's moored next to the "Mississippi Queen". The temperature here is about 30 degrees warmer than St Louis.

Bayou Labatre Alabama tonight. That's where Forest Gump started "Bubba Gump Shrimp"

We are on our way to Naples Florida with this new $4million, mini cruise ship, 105 ft. Skipperliner.

I don't know when we'll get back to St. Louis

Cheers and Happy Holidays from the Naples Princess crew,

News Release From BoatUS

What A Surveyor Should Look For

By Debbie Schaefer

Here’s a detailed summary of exactly what a surveyor inspects and tests when he or she conducts a marine survey on your behalf.

During a pre-purchase inspection, the marine surveyor will evaluate the boat’s systems and structure in and out of the water, looking for problems that could require expensive repairs, or that make the boat unseaworthy. The surveyor spends time below-decks, inspecting the engine installation, seacocks, fuel lines, electrical wiring, and plumbing systems, and the hull’s interior for structural defects. The surveyor may not be able to detect problems hidden by the boat’s permanent structures, like bulkheads or liners. Abovedecks the surveyor will examine the hull, deck fittings, helm station, navigation lights, liferails and pulpit, and other crucial structures. Using nondestructive testing, he’ll check for signs of blistering, gelcoat cracking, stress cracks in the fiberglass, and dry rot.

The surveyor will inventory all equipment being sold with the boat that enhances its value. He’ll check for safety equipment and list any U.S. Coast Guard required equipment that may be missing.

If you’re purchasing a sailboat, it’s important to have the rigging inspected. Ask the surveyor whether he will go aloft to make the inspection. A visual check from the deck may not be enough to detect worn or frayed fittings and cable.

When it comes to the engine, all the surveyors we interviewed said they perform only an external inspection of the engine. One surveyor, Jack Hornor from Davidsonville, MD, explained that, “At sea trial, engine operation is checked for RPM, temperature, and alternator output, and for any apparent signs of cooling, lubricating oil, or fuel-oil leaks.” He says surveyors generally rely on manufacturer-installed instruments to provide this information. All of the surveyors interviewed for this article said they don’t conduct compression tests or oil-sample analysis, and said they recommend technicians or diesel mechanics if further testing is needed or desired.

If a trailer is part of the package, don’t forget to have it inspected too. Make sure it’s accurately rated for the size and weight of the boat

River History....

December 05, 2009 in River History

The United States Coast Guard restricted the passage of all recreational vessels between mile marker 288.6 and 297.7 of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and all commercial vessels between mile marker 288.6 and 293.5.

The safety zone was established because the water inside the area was electrified for a fish kill and contact with the water could cause serious injury or death to a human.

The fish kill was conducted by the Illinois Department of Land and Natural Resources in an on-going attempt to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes....

Brunswick Corp. and their subsidiary, Lund Boat Co. is being sued by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs for the alleged discrimination against over 200 women that applied for entry level positions at the Lund plant in New York Mills, Minnesota.  Lund representatives are arguing that women were less likely to be hired due to a preference for workers with manufacturing experience.  The OFCCP investigation found that even women with manufacturing experience were less likely to be hired than men without it........

Corps Considering Plans To Straighten Channel........

As part of a plan to straighten out a crooked barge channel near Hastings, Minnesota, the Mississippi River will get a new island.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has started a study of the $5 million project.  Thanks to increasing sediment from upstream, the channel becomes shallow at a sharp bend in the Mississippi River.   The new island could be used boater recreation, or left for wildlife.  Either way, there will not be any buildings allowed on the island........

Yesteryear's Pic of the Day from 2009......  was a shot of a very unique looking motor vessel named the  Pickett Hastings traveling up-river in front of the bluffs on October 4th, 2009.

Ike also built an amphibious air plane that is hoisted on to the front deck of the Pickett between flights and according to the American Sternwheel Association, this sternwheeler is the only aircraft carrier in its registry.

Ike fought in World War II and then was a teacher for 30 years.  Now he travels the rivers.

Owner ............ Ike Hastings of , Freeport, IL

Missouri Gov. Requests Reinstatement In Repair Program........

On Friday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reinstate a Holt County levee in a federal repair program, as the Corps disqualified it just before the record floods along the Missouri River.  After the floodwaters receded, officials found a hole in the levee.  Estimates to repair the levee are around $4 million.  The Corps maintains that they were unaware of the impending when the levee was disqualified........

News Release From BoatUS

Seven Ways To Avoid The Boat Buyer Blues

By Debbie Schaefer

"He sounded so nice. Unfortunately, I found out later that the boat he sold me had been salvaged, and had spent four hours at the bottom of the lake!"

1. Get It In Writing
A contract is more easily enforced if it's in writing. Dealers often use standardized purchase agreements, but buyers have a right to protect their interests. By crossing out terms that are inappropriate and adding optional provisions or contingencies, you can tailor the contract to protect yourself. Check out our "Buyer's Toolbox" to see how you can obtain a sample contract.

2. Have A Pre-Purchase Survey
Be sure to add a clause in your purchase agreement stipulating that your offer is contingent on a satisfactory survey. Hiring a surveyor to perform a pre-purchase survey and sea trial of your boat is the best way to discover any problems before it's too late. Surveys are essential for used boats (and even for new boats when buyers are inexperienced), or if the boat has sophisticated equipment. Typical fees for a survey are between $15 and $30 per foot, but could go higher for more complicated vessels. Be aware that haul-out fees are the responsibility of the buyer.

When choosing a surveyor, make sure the individual you hire does not work for or represent the interests of the seller or broker. The BoatUS referral list of National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) and Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) is a good source of independent experts. When the surveyor completes his inspection of the boat, he'll prepare a written report, including his recommendations for needed repairs and their estimated cost. Armed with this information, the "satisfactory survey" contingency in the contract allows you to renegotiate or walk away from the deal without losing your deposit. If you decide to walk away from the deal due to a contingency, the contract may require written notification, and a strict time frame which, if not followed, could entitle the seller to keep your deposit.....click here to continue reading this article on BoatUS website

I know this is a bad time of year for this, but maybe a few people would have time to contact our elected senators and rep. in Washington DC.

Thanks

Corps To Boost Fish Barrier Voltage........

Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had announced that they would be increasing the voltage on an electric barrier intended to keep Asian carp and other fish from migrating between the Mississippi River basin and the Great Lakes.  Back in October, the Corps increased the voltage in the barrier, only to lower the voltage again, because it was thought that it was affecting nearby railroad signals.  A problematic piece of equipment was identified and reconfigured.  The power level of the barrier was slated to be increased Tuesday........

News Release From BoatUS

Boat-Lift Blues And Falling Boats

By Bob Adriance

Protecting your boat when it's on its lift is up to you. The devices are workhorses, but have their limits

All our Seaworthy stories are based on the damage claims and real-life experiences of our BoatUS Marine Insurance clients, and the lessons we've learned from them to keep you safer on the water.
Several years ago, a retired gentleman in Fort Myers, Florida, got some really bad news from his neighbor: "Your boat is sinking." Fortunately, the boat was next to its lift, so rather than hassle with emergency pumps, all the owner did was press the lift's "up" button and wait; the boat's salvation was at hand, or so he thought.

The lift's motor whirred away and the boat, with thousands of pounds of water still trapped in the hull, rose oh-so-slowly out of the water. Then, just when the owner was reaching to shut off the lift's motor, there was a loud snapping noise and in an instant the lift and boat were plunged back into the water. The boat landed on the twisted metal stump of the just-departed strut, punching a hole in the hull. Before he could find an emergency pump, the boat sank.

The owner learned a tough lesson about his boat's lift: The rated capacity (usually on a label) is its lifting capacity. A lift rated for 6,000 pounds, for example, is not designed to lift boats that weigh 6,100 pounds; there have been claims for lifts that failed when torrential rains or snow added considerable weight to a boat. Besides the lift itself, there are several other ways a boat hoist can fail. The most common, according to the BoatUS Marine Insurance claim files, involves cables that fatigue and break, either because of misalignment, chafe, corrosion, or a combination of all three....click here to go to BoatUs to continue reading this article...

River History....

02 December 1967  in River History

The famous River Queen steamboat sank on the St. Louis Riverfront on this day in 1967. High water, ice and other problems made saving the sinking vessel impossible. The steamboat quickly bokeup and the city of St. Louis brought in a scoop shovel to demolished what remained her, leaving behind only the steel hull.

It was indeed a famous riverboat, as it was used in the movie.. "Gone With the Wind."

The River Queen started her life in 1923 as the Eagle Packet Company steamer named the Cape Girardeau and later it became the the Greene Line's tourist steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene. She was the last packet boat built by the Howard Shipyards at Jeffersonville, Indiana and ran the rivers until 1952 when she was converted to a hotel, restaurant, bar/museum and gift shop under the names of Sarah Lee, the Sternwheller and then the River Queen.

Public Input Sought On Commercial Fishing........

The Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge is looking for public input about a proposal that would allow commercial fishing to help with controlling invasive species.  The levees that protect the refuge are not intended to prevent flooding, and are easily overtopped.  This allows fish like the Asian carp into the refuge.  Commercial fishing could control invasive fish populations, as well as decrease the number of fish trapped when the pools are drawn down........

Mercury Marine Shutting Down Stillwater Facility........

Production at the Mercury Marine facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma is winding in preparation for the December 22 closure.  Back in 2009, Mercury Marine announced that they would be closing the Stillwater plant, taking with it 380 jobs.  This closure was announced on the heels of a union dispute at Mercury's Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where the union rejected Mercury's concessions.  Mercury announced that they would close the Wisconsin facility and move production to the Stillwater facility.  Mercury's management gave the union another chance to vote on the concessions, which the union accepted, and then the company announced the Stillwater plant closure........

News Release From BoatUS

Bill in Congress Would Preserve Boating Access

BoatUS Urges Congressional Support for H.R. 3109 "Keep America's Waterfront Working Act"

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 1, 2011 -- Working waterfronts, those parts of town at the water’s edge dotted with marine-dependent businesses like marinas, boatyards and haul-out facilities, are crucial to recreational boating. However, in some places they are struggling as municipalities grapple with development pressures and poor planning and that’s why Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine has introduced the “Keep America’s Waterfront Working Act of 2011” (H.R. 3109) in Congress. BoatUS is urging boaters to ask their Congressional representatives to sign-on as co-sponsors of the bill.

“Boaters rely on such small businesses to provide critical access to the water and essential services for their vessels and families,” said BoatUS Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs Ryck Lydecker. “If Rep. Pingree’s bill passes, it would be an extremely positive step in preserving access, facilities and services for recreational boaters and anglers.”
The waterfront is an economic engine and job provider for many communities, and H.R. 3109 would help states develop tools to preserve sites for water-dependent commercial activities. The bill is nearly identical to one that Pingree introduced in 2009. Grants would allow coastal states and communities to support and protect places where boatyards, marinas and other service providers do business, as well as boat builders, commercial fishermen, fishing charter and tour boat operators, and other water-dependent businesses. For example, working boatyards and other points of waterfront access at risk of conversion to non-water-dependent uses could be acquired from willing sellers. It would also provide essential funding for waterfront planning that could stem the tide of conversion.
“The waterfront is the only viable location for such businesses, and the continued access they provide to recreational boaters along our coasts is vital to the future of boating,” Lydecker added.

H.R. 3109 currently has 18 co-sponsors but needs more, according to BoatUS. Boaters can review the bill and ask their members of Congress to co-sponsor at: www.BoatUS.com/gov/workingwaterfronts. For more information, contact BoatUS Government Affairs at 703-461-2878, ext. 8363 or email mailto:GovtAffairs@BoatUS.com.

Pictures of the Day ... were sent to us by Capt'n Rick Estes who hails out of Lake Center Marina in the boat........ Y2Katy

Hi, Bill,
Wednesdays picture of the day...the Sunday Lone Boater....is the Y2Katy. Mary and I went out to warm up the oil and shake up the Stabil in the gas tanks before winterization. A sad day, cold and misty also. There's also a shot of us on Sharkys webcam at 1:25 PM. We didn't see any other fools boating in such dreadful weather, except for a very small fishing/hunting boat. Oh, well, stay warm, happy holidays and see you next season!

Rick Estes

RiverBill says....  Hi Rick.  I was winterizing my boat at North Shore when I spotted you and Mary out in Dardenne Slough, so I snapped a shot with my cell phone camera and postd it on Wednesday.

I also blew the picture of Rick (above) up really large and I am claiming to see myself on the bank taking Wednesday's pic, although it is just going to look just like a black spot to most.....Ha

See you next season.....
