Bill,

That red, white and blue vessel leaving Hoppies is a 36' Krogen Manatee, built around 1984-94 . Powered by no more than a 90 hp perkins, probably. Several have done the loop. Even before there was a "Loop". Very roomy. 3'2" draft. Seen all around the Loop and in the Bahanas and South. Heck of a boat!!!!!!

PS.....Fran and Milt Ohlsen formerly hailed out of the Duck Club Yacht Club and are spending time in the Caribbean and other warm waters of the south in their cruiser.....Sea Fox.

River History....

30 November 2007 in River History

An overnight snow and ice storm hit the St. Louis area reaping havoc on the area marinas.

30 November 1835 in River History

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.

Born .....November 30, 1835 Died.....April 21, 1910

One of Missouri's favorite native son's
The man was born in Florida, Mo and lived in Hannibal, Mo and St. Louis Mo.
He was a riverboat captain, a journalist, a lecturer (comic) and an author.
He lived most f his boyhood years on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Mo.

The town of Hannibal and its inhabitants became the subjects of Mark Twain's later famous writings........ especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
At the age of seventeen Samuel Clemens he went to work on the Mississippi River, became a steamboat pilot.

His pen name ....."Mark Twain" came from his years on the river. When two fathoms or 12 feet of water were measured on the sounding line the words "Mark Twain" were called out to the riverboat captain... meaning ..."Safe Water."

US Coast Guard News Release

Duluth-based Coast Guard Cutter Alder assumes role of Chicago's "Christmas Ship"

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder, acting as the “Christmas Ship," departed Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Tuesday morning and is scheduled to arrive at Chicago’s Navy Pier at 8:30 a.m. Friday for an annual event to distribute Christmas trees to deserving families on Saturday.

In conjunction with seasonal buoy retrieval operations in Lake Michigan, the crew of Alder will support the event this year, while the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, which normally handles those duties, takes Mackinaw to a Wisconsin shipyard to effect the repair of a leaking bow-thruster.

The distribution of the holiday trees to trucks from community organizations will begin off the decks of the Alder on Saturday at 10 a.m., after the first three trees are given to three families during the brief public ceremony.

Public tours of the CGC Alder will also be available on Saturday, from 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The Alder will arrive loaded with Christmas trees purchased by Chicago’s Christmas Ship Committee to be distributed to disadvantaged families throughout the Chicago area. The Alder’s reenactment continues a treasured part of Chicago’s maritime tradition. The Alder's crew is participating in the event while also performing their aids-to-navigation maintenance duties in southern Lake Michigan as part the 9th Coast Guard District's Operation Fall Retrieve.

The Rouse Simmons was the original “Christmas Ship” that came to Chicago with fresh evergreens and wreaths for holiday season during the early 1900’s. Rouse Simmons was a three-masted schooner and was recognized by the Christmas tree tied to its mast as it entered port.

The Rouse Simmons was the principal means of bringing Christmas trees to Chicago for more than 30 years until, in 1912, the ship was lost off the coast of Wisconsin in Lake Michigan with all 17 men aboard.

Chicago’s boating community reenactment of the olden days of the Rouse Simmons landing in Chicago is now portrayed by the Alder. The trees will be taken off the Alder by local youth volunteers, the Sea Cadets, Venture Crews, Sea Explorer Scouts and the Young Marines and loaded onto trucks for distribution by Ada S. McKinley Community Services.

The Chicago's Christmas Ship Committee is comprised of and supported by all facets of the Chicago’s boating community: the International Shipmasters’ Association, Chicago Marine Heritage Society, US Navy League, Chicago yacht clubs, Friends of the Marine Community, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Chicago Yachting Association.

Chicago’s Christmas Ship Committee will also host educational programs for local area schools aboard the Alder. Children from the Chicago area will learn about the role of the Coast Guard, the “Christmas Ship” tradition, observe a Sea Partners ecology presentation and experience a ship tour by Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The Alder’s arrival is a culmination of efforts by the Chicago’s Christmas Ship Committee, working together with the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Sea Partners Program, Chicago Navy Pier, private individuals, and the hard working generous boaters of the marine community to help make Christmas special for Chicago's families in need.

Henry Winkler's Happy Days On The River
The Fonz traded in his leather jacket for waders and found his true home among the trout.

He may have "jumped the shark" on waterskis in Fonzie's trademark leather jacket, but these days Henry Winkler is happier casting for trout in his waders. That said, the actor and director admits he can be overly enthusiastic when he gets in the boat with a rod in his hand. In fact, his wife says he's a maniac.

"Well, we do fish in separate boats, because I somehow cannot follow the rule that where she sits is her water," Winkler says. "If I think there's a fish in there, I've gotta try! That's annoying for her, of course, so we fish in separate boats and meet at lunch." Stacey, Winkler's wife of 33 years, would go even further. She says the only time in their marriage her husband goes from being the most thoughtful, optimistic, and enthusiastic person she's ever known is when he's fishing.

"It's odd because Henry is a native New Yorker and we live in Los Angeles. In both of those high-stress places, he's never flustered or overwrought. Only in the serene beauty of fly-fishing country does the crazed and competitive Henry appear. If you happen to find yourself on the same river as Henry, my advice is this: Do not obstruct his casting, because he truly believes all fish wear tags reading, "To be caught and released only by Henry Winkler."....  Click here to continue reading this article on BoatUS.com

Pictures of the Day ... were sent to us by Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat..... Whoz Yer Daddy.

Bill,

Thanks so much for putting the pics up from our trip to Mels! We truly enjoy our old boats and the fellowship we get from working on them together. We have a group of folks who get together every Tuesday evening to work on boats and enjoy telling stories of our various adventures over the years. Our group has been dubbed "ole boys" and it is open to anyone who belongs to our chapter. Last week we had a Thanksgiving dinner at ole boys with fried turkey and all the trimmings! Here are a few pics including some of our current projects.

Thanks again for the support you give us!

Upper Mississippi River

Migrating Waterfowl Heading Down The Mississippi........

Recently, large flocks of migrating waterfowl have begun appearing along the Upper Mississippi River, including ducks, geese and even some eagles.  Around 60% of North American waterfowl use the Mississippi River as part of their migration route. Conservation groups know the waterfowl returning on an annual basis do so because of efforts to restore habitats. 10 years ago, several agencies teamed up to construct or restore 22 major islands near Brownsville, Minnesota........

Boat Care

Cold Weather Means Time For Winterization........

Colder weather is is beginning to arrive, and that means that it is time to winterize the boat.  Now everyone knows that the best place to store a boat is in a climate controlled shelter out of the water.  However, that option may not be available to everyone, but there is another option, shrink wrap.  While winterizing, one must make sure to follow all of the recommendations in the vessel's owner's manual.  Many marinas offer an all inclusive package that typically cover all that is necessary........

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Typical E. Coli Levels Low........

At the last meeting of the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance, the hot topic of discussion was the results of the five year study of the E. Coli levels at the Lake.  Typically, the E. Coli levels are low.  Of the 1,619 samples take over the course of the study, 43 or 2.7% tested in excess or the recommended 235 E. Coli colonies per 100 milliliters of water. Of those 43 samples, 29 or 67% were collected after heavy rainfall, showing that stormwater affects overall lake water quality........

News Release From BoatUS

Three Ethanol Myths Clarified

By Bob Adriance

It's time we get to the bottom of how E10 is affecting our engines

In the few years since ethanol began to be widely used in the United States, a lot has been written about its properties, the problems it's created, and how to best cope with its possible effects. Some of the advice has been based on science, some on hearsay. While E10 is not an ideal fuel – and E15 could cause serious problems for marine engines – at least a few myths about ethanol have arisen with the potential to do more harm than good:

Myth #1: Ethanol-enhanced gasoline (E10) loses octane much faster than regular gasoline.
Many mechanics believe that octane loss during winter storage could be great enough to damage an engine when it's run in the spring. These same mechanics will often recommend leaving the tank almost empty so that fresh gasoline can be added in the spring to raise depleted octane levels. While all gasoline loses octane as it ages, ethanol-enhanced gasoline loses octane at about the same rate as regular gasoline, according to Jim Simnick, a technical advisor at BP Global Fuels Technology, and Lew Gibbs, a senior engineering consultant and Chevron Fellow. The two men have over 75 years of combined experience working with gasoline and both agree that the loss of octane over the winter would not be sufficient to damage an engine. Note, however, to keep any gasoline, including E10, as fresh as possible; they said it's good practice to always add fuel stabilizer — an antioxidant — whenever the boat will be idle for long periods.

The recommendation to leave a tank mostly empty is bad advice; it could significantly increase the amount of water that gets into the tank. When enough water enters through the vent, the ethanol will separate ("phase separate") from the gasoline. Leaving a tank mostly empty does three things to increase the chances of phase separation:

It increases the volume of open space in the tank (its "lung capacity") so it can "breathe in" damaging moist air. An almost-empty tank leaves more space on tank walls for condensation to form. Leaving less gasoline in the tank means there will be less ethanol to absorb the condensation.

It's interesting to note that in areas of the Midwest that have been dealing with E10 for over a decade, topping off tanks is common practice. (As an alternative, completely emptying the tank would eliminate any chance of phase separation.)

If phase separation occurs, the highly corrosive ethanol/water mixture will settle to the bottom of the tank and remain there even after fresh fuel is added in the spring. The only way to remedy the problem would then be to drain the tank and add fresh gasoline. The best way to avoid phase separation over the winter (aside from emptying the tank) is to leave the tank 95-percent full (which allows for expansion) so that there's less moist air in the tank, less space for condensation to collect, and more gasoline to absorb whatever moisture does accumulate.

Myth #2: E10 attracts water, so it's important to install a water separator to prevent the water reaching the engine.
Mercury Marine, which recently hosted a Webinar on ethanol myths, noted that ethanol does not "grab water molecules out of the air." It is hydrophilic, which means ethanol holds water. With regular gasoline (E0) as well at E10, the primary cause of water collecting in tanks is condensation on tank walls. But unlike E0, which can absorb almost no moisture, E10 can hold up to half of one percent of water by volume, and the water molecules will dissolve in the fuel. The "solubilized" water will bypass the water separator and burn harmlessly through the engine. Only if phase separation were to occur would a water separator do its job, but by then the fuel itself would be the problem. The phase-separated water/ethanol mixture would settle on the bottom of the tank near the fuel pick-up and would quickly stall out or even damage your engine. And because ethanol is used to boost octane, the remaining (low-octane) gasoline at the top of the tank would also have the potential to damage your engine.

Note, however, that a fuel filter (10-micron) is essential to keep gunk from reaching your engine. Ethanol is a solvent that dissolves resins, rust, and dirt that have accumulated on older tank walls. Especially when you first make the transition to E10, it's important to carry spare filters and a galvanized bucket to store used filters prior to disposal. Even in new engines and tanks, E10 will sometimes form a mysterious gooey substance that will also clog filters. Richard Kolb, the manager of Emissions and Regulations for Volvo Penta, believes the goo is caused by water mixing with one or more of the 108 approved compounds that can be used in gasoline. These compounds vary among suppliers, so one solution is to change to a different brand of gasoline. Another is to use carburetor cleaner, which he says has sometimes remedied the problem.

Myth #3: Certain additives can prevent phase separation?
Both Gibbs and Simnick said that the additives that eliminate water may work incrementally to protect against phase separation, but Joe Simnick stressed that no additives will stand up to a good slug of water. Lew Gibbs added that the best way to prevent phase separation in E10 is to "keep it dry, keep it dry, keep it dry." That means keeping the tank filled to prevent condensation. Mercury Marine has also noted that, contrary to statements made by some companies that produce fuel additives, there are no additives that can make stale or phase-separated gasoline usable.

E10 is certainly not as trouble-free as E0, especially the first few tankfulls. But for newer engines, those built after about 1991, there's no reason the initial problems can't be overcome. No less an authority than Mercury Marine says, "After the transition period from E0, E10 may actually be a superior marine fuel as it tends to keep low levels of water moving through the fuel system, keeping the
system 'dry.'"

Crowd Gathers To Watch Eagle Release........

American Queen Should Return In 2012........

Back in 2008, the American Queen stopped in Hannibal 16 times over the summer and fall.  If things go as planned, the Queen could be making an appearance in 2012.  Gail Bryant, director of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau stated the city was in talks with the person in charge of the Queen's itinerary.  The American Queen belongs to the Great American Steamboat Company.  Their website lists Hannibal as a destination on the fall foliage cruises that run between St. Louis and St. Paul........

MILWAUKEE .... Personnel from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan are conducting a marine casualty investigation on a tug-and-barge, after a barge being towed broke free and ran aground in Lake Michigan near Sheboygan, Wis., Nov. 24, 2011.

The Coast Guard advises that people stand clear of the salvage area until the barge is free of the lake bottom.

The empty barge broke away from the tugboat Donald C during a routine transit toward Manitowoc, Wis., Thursday evening. The crew of the Donald C was unable to regain control of the barge because of rough seas and heavy winds.

Marine investigators from Sector Lake Michigan arrived on scene on Friday Morning and are monitoring the situation until the barge can be re-floated and examined. The barge is reportedly carrying a cargo of rocks. There are no reports of pollution or environmental hazards.

For more information contact Lt. Casey Steuer, Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, at 414-747-7151.

People Were Catching Tuna 42,000 Years Ago........

About 1.9 million years ago, fish became a staple in the human diet.  Early anglers were able to wade into shallow waters and catch fish without any special equipment.  It was some time later that humans decided to venture out into the oceans in search of fish. New research has suggested that humans were proficient in deep sea fishing as much as 42,000 years ago.  An excavation in the southeast Asian island of Timor unearthed remains of tuna and other deep water species dated to 42,000 years old........

Recently, 3M asked the state of Minnesota to revise fish consumption advisories, and remove a designation of "impaired" from the Mississippi River.  Over the summer, 3M had conducted a fish tissue and water study along the Mississippi River between the Ford and Hastings dams.  It found a decrease of the suspected carcinogen PFOS in the river.  The study sample included 400 fish, and the results were verified by an independent lab.  The state will review the study results, but more data may be needed for a decision........

Missouri Department of Conservation news

Dec 3-4, 2011....Eagles Days set at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge

MOUND CITY Mo -- The 33rd annual Eagle Days at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge Dec. 3-4 will feature the nation’s symbol plus thousands of waterfowl.

"About 200,000 snow geese migrated into the refuge in recent days," said Refuge Manager Ron Bell on Nov 22. "The marshes are holding about 100,000 ducks. Flocks of late-migrating pelicans are on the area."

Bell adeed that a few dozen bald eagles, most immature, were using the area early in the week. Bell expects more eagles to arrive along with migrating waterfowl.

“It’s been a really late migration this fall,” he said. “I was concerned that we wouldn’t have any snow geese for Eagle Days. But over the past weekend they showed up.”

Squaw Creek received enough Missouri River floodwater this summer to boost wetland plants that provide food for waterfowl. But that water came from upstream. A dry summer in the region enabled work on some wetland pools to make them more favorable for waterfowl so the area should attract birds as winter weather arrives.

Eagle Days is hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) with help from various public and private conservation partners in northwest Missouri.

Eagle days will include shows featuring captive eagles presented by staff from the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield. Programs will begin on the hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.

All Eagle Days viewing activities and programs are free. The visitor center and displays will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Guided tour buses will be available.

Visitors can also take a driving tour through the refuge. Geese, ducks, shorebirds and eagles are often spotted in or near the marshes on the tour. MDC and refuge staff will be stationed at prime spots for wildlife viewing and spotting scopes will be available.

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is near Mound City about 30 miles north of St. Joseph. The headquarters and refuge are three miles west of I-29 on Missouri 159.

Parking space is limited at headquarters. So on Saturday, Dec. 3, Eagle Days attendees are urged to take advantage of free parking at the former Squaw Creek Eagle Nest Plaza just off I-29 at Exit 79, which is the interchange with Missouri 159. Shuttle buses will run continuously to ferry visitors to the Eagle Days activities and back to the parking lot.

Shuttle buses will not be available at the parking lot on Sunday, Dec. 4.

For more information, contact Squaw Creek at 660-442-3187, or MDC at 816-271-3100.

Fishy Tales

The One That Got Away Was Swiped By Feds........

Earlier in the week, a fisherman hauled in an 881 pound tuna, just to have federal authorities swoop in and take it away.  Carlos Rafael and his crew were fishing for bottom-feeders with nets, and unintentionally caught the tuna.  When Rafael's boat returned to port, the federal fishery enforcement agents took custody of the tuna for procedural reasons.  Rafael had obtained tuna permits, however, anglers are only allowed to take tuna with a rod and reel.......

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

    Re-Worded Fishing Ban Proposed........

Recently, the Alton City Council Committee of the Whole introduced a modified resolution that is intended to stop unauthorized fishing at the Alton Marina.  The resolution was originally brought up over the summer, but it was killed on account of how it was worded.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took exception to the resolution because it singled out fishing as a forbidden activity.  Revised wording will cover fishing and other activities........

Prop Accident Trial Verdict In Favor Of OMC........

Monday, a Reno, Nevada jury decided in favor of Outboard Marine Corp. during a propeller injury trial.  Robin Listman was suing OMC for injuries sustained in a 2001 accident where she came in contact with a boat propeller.  Liston was aboard a 1995 Four Winns 19 foot boat powered by an OMC Cobra sterndrive, when she went to the swim platform to retrieve an inflatable toy.  She fell in the water, and the vessel's operator reversed the boat, striking Liston with the prop........

Picture of the Day ... is from Capt'n Larry Demko

Bill:

Has anyone ever organized a Thanksgiving -- or Christmas -- Boat Parade on the River?

Seems to me it would be a pretty neat thing. The waterfront in Grafton would seem like a good venue... or maybe in front of Palisades Yacht Club. Alton is a bit further downstream for the "slough" boaters but also a great venue.

It would mean navigating the river at night when the water's low. I'll bet Carl would do it!

We'll call it the annual Riverbills' Holiday Boat Parade. It could be right after Thanksgiving. (you know, before you head to Jamaica!)

Here are some links to inspire you (or an ambitious reader):

First, a link to the Jacksonville Thanksgiving Boat Parade.(I've always wanted to attend it.)http://www.makeascenedowntown.com/Events/Jacksonville-Light-Parade.aspx

I used to live in Baltimore and this was great...

On another note, attached is a great pic of boats in the fall. Looks like it's close to Thanksgiving to me.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day

Yesteryear's Pictures of this Day in  2010 -----    were sent to us by Capt'n Larry Snopek

Bill:

Travelled up to La Crosse this past weekend...(Nov13, 14). While we were there, we drove up the Minnesota side of the river, and back down the Wisconsin side. Stopped at Danzinger winery in Alma, WI. Very nice view of the river from there. Lock and Dam 4 can be seen through the trees. While it appears some distance away, L & D 4 was about 1-1.5 miles away. While we in town, we stopped off at the Dam View Bar, which is directly across from L & D 4, in Alma.

One other stop I would suggest is the Harbor Bar, just across the river from Red Wing Mn.

Boat Gas News

Biofuel Alternative To E15 Looks Promising........

Recently, the National Marine Manufacturers Association released the results from a preliminary evaluation of the use of isobutanol-gasoline blends, which may be a potential biofuel alternative to E15.  The testing was performed by the NMMA in conjunction with the American Boat and Yacht Council.  The NMMA and ABYC tested older fiberglass fuel tanks, and a variety of marine engines.  They found the new blend produced no higher emissions than EPA approved test gasoline, and produced 30% more energy than E15........

Missouri River Flood Outlook

NOAA Says Flooding Likely For 2012........

NOAA forecasters are predicting that 2012 will likely be another year of flooding along the Missouri River.  Doug Kluck, Regional Climate Services Director, stated that the flooding outlook is not likely to be anything like the floods of 2011.  However, Kluck did give 50/50 odds on flooding at this point.  At this time last year, lands surrounding the Upper Missouri River Valley were under several inches of snow, which combined with a rainy spring to cause the flooding........

A Peek Inside The Wide World Of Noodling........

In the U.S., catfish noodling, or hand fishing, may have grown from necessity.  When an angler hooked up a giant catfish, it tended to break fishing rods, requiring an alternate method of bringing these catfish in.  Catfishing-Inponds.com claims that noodling in the U.S. is handed down, father to son.  Many states ban the practice, but it is still legal in Georgia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Kansas, Illinois and Missouri........

Lee, as well as a lawyer named Abraham Lincoln for the trial over the steamboat Effie Afton vs. the railroad.  Capt.     Pere Marquette Fire Under Control........

It appears that Sunday's rains will helped firefighters get ahead of the fire at Pere Marquette State Park.  The fire is under control, and firefighters are heading home.  There have been no reports of injuries or damage to buildings, but the fire did blacken close to 1,500 acres in the eastern portion of the park.  It is thought that the fire began Thursday, and investigators are looking for the fire's cause........

    Sinkhole Reveals Abandoned Brewery........

In the woods near the Illinois River, a decrepit limestone wall marks where the Star Union brewery once stood in Peru, Illinois.  Recently, another remnant of the brewery was revealed when a sinkhole exposed stone tunnels 10 feet underground.  The tunnels were used for brewery sewage.  Many Peru locals remember the fishing was very good where the sewage tunnels emptied out into the Illinois River........

Duck Population Increasing At Lake Chautauqua........

A duck feeding frenzy is going on at the Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge, as they gobbled up nutsage seed and small invertebrates.  The ducks weren't so preoccupied with feeding that they ignored birds of prey in the area.  Eagles were diving low enough to roust the ducks from the water.  31,360 ducks were counted at Lake Chautauqua, up from 12,000 counted just two weeks ago.  Last year at this time, there were only 1,400 ducks on both pools of Lake Chautauqua........

  Boat Manufacturer

Boat Builder May Be Culpable In Drowning........

An unnamed Western Washington boat manufacturer is under investigation in the July 11, 2009 drowning death of Cindy Tate.  Tate was aboard a 21 foot boat that capsized, presumably after being swamped by a wave.  She was likely trapped beneath the sinking vessel.  Authorities allege that the boat was built with a cheaper type of foam, not rated foe marine use. The foam became saturated after the accident, causing the vessel to sink within 2 minutes........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

Barge Traffic Resumes, Shut Down Again........

Saturday morning, the Mississippi River reopened to barge traffic. The river was closed again Saturday evening, at 7 pm, and will remain closed until 7 am Sunday.  The river will close again Sunday evening.  The closures are to allow dredge crews to pass through.  Complicating the dredging efforts are crosscurrents.  The portion of the Mississippi River that is silted in is known for dangerous crosscurrents.  The crosscurrents have caused several accidents, including a 15 barge tow that was grounded on the Illinois bank........
