Pictures of the Day ...... were sent to us by Capt'n Gary Lucy, river artist extraordinaire, who hails out of My River Home in the houseboat....... The River Rover

Bill,

I am sending a few photos taken on the river Sunday. Sunday was a gray and wet day. However, Every day is a beautiful day on the river.

The eagle photo is not best. However, I had rough water and bad light. The big guy looks a little the worst for ware.

Also, a few photos of the Spirit of Peoria at Grafton. She is still propelled by her stern-wheel.....one of the last. She has great lines and is a floating history lesson depicting the image of the historic Mississippi River.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2009......... was sent in by Eric and Lisa Ridenhour , who hail out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the  “Lisa Diane”.

Hi RiverBill,

We took a boat trip up to Hannibal last week and this is a picture of our daughter, Marina, taken at Hannibal Harbor . As usual, the pool north of Winfield was extremely scenic and made for a beautiful trip. This was our kid’s first real river trip and like always, all the stops on the way to Hannibal , like Two Rivers Marina and the beaches along the way, were awesome.

Thanks for the great website. It offers all of us boaters a great onestop website to see what’s going on out there on the River!

Corps 2012 Plans Should Consider '11 Floods........

Legislators from the states along the Missouri River would like to make sure the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers take the flooding of 2011 into consideration when making plans for 2012.  Iowa Representative Steve King has introduced a bill that would require the Corps to factor in the 2011 floods when they determine how much water to store in the upstream reservoirs.  During 2011, the Corps allotted about 22% of the reservoirs' capacity to snowmelt and rain.  King's bill does not assign a specific amount of storage capacity, only consideration of the '11 floods........

Department of Natural Resources grants, extends waivers aiding continued cleanup from spring, summer disasters

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., SEPT. 19, 2011 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is waiving or extending previous waivers of specific solid waste and air pollution regulations related to the cleanup of communities affected by flooding and severe weather that hit sections of the state this spring and summer.

Department of Natural Resources’ Director Sara Parker Pauley issued a waiver Friday outlining the allowed handling of vegetative and appliance waste in 10 Missouri River counties affected by flooding that began June 1. The new waiver affects cleanup in Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Carroll, Cooper, Holt, Lafayette, Platte, Ray and Saline counties.

Director Pauley also extended similar waivers previously granted to counties affected by spring flooding across southern Missouri and severe storm damage including damage done by the Joplin and Sedalia tornadoes.

All of the waivers granted or extended on Friday will be in effect until Dec. 15.

Copies of the waivers, including specific regulations being waived, fact sheets on proper disposal of storm debris and other related information are available on the department’s natural disaster resources web page: http://dnr.mo.gov/disaster.htm. Specific questions concerning storm cleanup should be addressed to the appropriate Department of Natural Resources regional office. Boat US News Release

Top Women Sailors Gather for BoatUS "Meet the Champions"
2011 Santa Maria Cup Reception, Annapolis, MD

William Paca House and Garden, September 30, 2011

ANNAPOLIS, Md, September 19, 2011 – With a change in dates for the 21st Santa Maria Cup International Women’s Match Racing Championship, an evolving roster of top women sailing athletes will race on Annapolis’ Severn River course September 28 through October 1. The public is encouraged to meet skippers and crew, past Santa Maria Cup racers, as well as leading sailors from the sport of sailboat racing at the “Celebrate Women in Sailing Week” in Annapolis at the BoatUS “Meet the Champions” Public Reception at the William Paca House and Garden, September 30, 6:30pm - 9:00pm in Annapolis. Newly released footage of the 1995 America3 Team – the first all-women America’s Cup team with Team Captain Dawn Riley, the 1992 Santa Maria Cup winner, will be previewed.

The public is also invited to opening ceremonies on September 27 at 6:00pm at the Susan C. Campbell Park City Dock, Annapolis to welcome the sailors from who hail from five countries. Hosted by the Eastport Yacht Club, racing can be watched from the water each day and through live commentary on SantaMariaCup.org. The Santa Maria Cup is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) grade one event.

Eight teams of four sailors in J-22 sailboats will compete in heated head-to-head duels much like the famed America’s Cup. However, unlike the America’s Cup, each Santa Maria Cup boat is identical, testing the sailing ability of each team, with boat design and materials not being factors.

Team skippers will be Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), Silja Lehtinen (FIN), Julie Bossard (FRA), Maegan Ruhlman (USA), Martina Silva (ARG), Becca Dellenbaugh (USA), returning champion Liz Baylis (USA) and Sharon Ferris-Choat (CAN). Olympic hopefuls can use this event to increase their world rankings for the first Olympic Women’s Match Racing at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

See a full schedule of events and ticket information at www.EastportYC.org and in Spinsheet Magazine at http://issuu.com/cdeere/docs/santamaria_2011. Photos from past cups and other women sailing events are available at www.BoatUS.com/women.

   Grafton Celebrating 175th Anniversary........

When Grafton was founded in 1836, James Mason envisioned a bustling city, rife with manufacturing and commerce, nestled at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.  Tourism has replaced industry in the city, but the Rivers still are important to Grafton.  The celebration had many historic exhibits including a re-enactment of the opening of the River Road, a "Life on the Rivers" themed land parade, and a photo exhibit featuring photos of barges and steamers, called the Workhorse of the Rivers"........

    River Cleanup Draws 400 Volunteers........

Although Han and Chewie were missing in action, a toy Millennium Falcon was the oddest item found during the 12th Annual Peoria Park District River Sweep held Saturday.  Some 400 volunteers turned out to scour the shore and wooded areas north of the Peoria city limit.  Other items recovered included thirty tires, something that appeared to be a buoy, and half of a jacuzzi tub.  J.D. Russell, President of the Friends of the Illinois River and manager of the Forest Park Nature Center stated that a lot of the debris are items that people believe that garbage men won't pick up........

UPDATE 3: Coast Guard responds to reports of crude oil in Bayou Dupont
NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard continues the response to a report of a crude oil discharge in Bayou Dupont and north Barataria Bay, Sunday.

The Coast Guard has determined that approximately 2,016 gallons of oil have been recovered from the site of the oil discharge in Bayou Dupont, near Wilkinson Canal in Jefferson Parish.

Response crews have secured the source of the first reported discharge and the second leak has ceased discharging. A third leak was discovered, Wednesday, near the southwest corner of the site and is no longer actively discharging. Containment boom has been placed around the leak by response crews.

Bill,

After over a year of messaging (via e-mail) I finally met Danielle Parent and her beautiful family after they settled in at Grafton Harbor today. Craig and Danielle with their children Morgan, Ryann and Jaxon completed the first leg of the Great Loop journey, the Illinois River. The kids love cruising in their 48' Chris-Craft Catalina and are used to living in tight quarters after traveling around the USA in a Motor Home a year ago. They all love visiting zoos so, naturally ours in on the top of their list of things to do while visiting St. Louis.

MDC invites all to spend "A Day on the River"

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –The mighty Mississippi River is an exciting place to spend a day. People of all ages are invited to “A Day on the River” hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Southern Illinois University (SIU) and the American Land Conservancy (ALC) on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Red Star Access in downtown Cape Girardeau and at the Middle Mississippi River Wetland Field Station in East Cape Girardeau, IL.

According to the event coordinator, MDC Naturalist Angela Pierce, this event will be fun for the whole family.

“Families can visit the Missouri side to enjoy boat rides, fishing, live animals and crafts, and there will also be boat rides on the Mississippi throughout the day,” Pierce said. “Just pick up your free ticket for boat rides at the information table at Red Star Access.”

On the Illinois side of the river, Pierce said there will be a bird-watching hike, a river model and tiny wetland creatures to discover. Professionals from various agencies will be on hand to help participants learn about wetland conservation.

“The Mississippi River is not only a huge part of Cape Girardeau heritage, but it’s also home to diverse wildlife,” Pierce said. “We hope lots of people will join us for this unique event to celebrate the largest river ecosystem in North America.”

For more information on this event and others offered at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, call 573-290-5218 or go online to www.mdc.mo.gov.

Lake Of The Ozarks

     Lake Levels Drop 8 inches........

The operators of the Bagnell Dam are lowering the level of the Lake of the Ozarks in accordance with the guide curve for September.  Over the past week, the Lake has fallen 8 inches, from 658.65 feet to 658.0 feet.  Scattered rain is forecast, so the dam operators will be running minimum generation.  The Lake should remain around 658 feet through the beginning of November, when the level will be brought to 659 feet.  The annual drawdown would then start in January........

  2011 Floods

    Damage Estimates Around $2 Billion........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that estimates for the repair of damage to the dams, levees and riverbanks caused by the flooding of 2011 will be about $2 billion.  These estimates do not consider damages caused by flooding brought of by Hurricane Ike and Tropical Storm Lee. The Corps has $150 million available to make these repairs.  Congress is entertaining disaster relief bills, however, only part of the funds would be allocated to the Corps........

Dead Frogs Litter Highway In An Amphibious Assault........

Over the past few days, dead frogs and turtles began lining the the shoulders of U.S. 67 about an eighth of a mile from the Clark Bridge in West Alton, Missouri.  No one is sure of the reason for the mass migration from nearby marshlands.  There is speculation that the amphibians were migrating because of dwindling water supplies on the heels of an extended hot summer.  Back in the early spring, a massive fish kill occurred in the area that was attributed to low water levels........

Little John's Motor Sports Update !

     New Athens, Illinois

 Hi Bill,

New Athens turned out to be a very challenging end of the season race. Randy already clinched the high points championship for the Kentucky Drag Boat Association. Yea!! However, even though in the lead for both the Lucas Oil and the St. Louis Drag Boat Association championships, it was mathematically possible for Randy to lose those top positions. On Saturday’s first qualifying pass, he put up a sold 9.05 time. The weekend however became more taxing than anyone had anticipated on the second qualifying attempt. Catastrophic engine failure as a rod and a whole lot of other broken metal ripped through the engine and oil pan. No spare parts could ever fix what was broken and if Randy didn’t attempt to make a pass during bracket elimination racing on Sunday, both championships would automatically be lost. Do you say, “Well, that’s racing. Pack it up…we’ve had a great season.” Not this team!! We exhausted all of our possible options and accepted the offer of Wade Wallace, Ashly Ruf’s team, to get one of his engines from a drag boat he was trying to sell which was located down in Kentucky. Our friend and valuable crew member, John Morris, made a 7 hour road trip to get this engine and bring it back to New Athens. The guys worked through the evening and eventually got the new engine to fire up in the Kwitchabitchin boat around 1:30 am. Randy was able to get the boat in the water and made the first pass on Sunday in order to hold onto and capture the St. Louis Drag Boat Association’s Point Championship. This also was the clincher to save a Lucas Oil runner-up position.

Here are some pictures from the race showing the Kwitchabitchin boat without its engine and then a new one going in. Two High Points Championships and one Runner-Up is a great accomplishment. So proud of Randy, Little John, and the entire team.

Published on: Sep. 15, 2011

Posted by Dan Zarlenga

ELSBERRY Mo The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will close the Hamburg Ferry River Access indefinitely for major renovations beginning the week of Sept. 19. The access is located on the Mississippi River at the end of Highway P in southern Pike County, just north of the Lincoln County border.

Boaters, anglers and hunters should seek alternate locations for accessing the Mississippi River. The nearest alternate public boat ramp is Norton Woods Access. To reach Norton Woods Access, take Hatfield Road east from Highway 79 just south of Elsberry, then turn right on Norton Woods Road through B. K. Leach Conservation Area to reach the boat ramp.

Hi Bill,

The river looked so pretty this morning from Hoppies Marina. I met these
folks on their catamaran who have been traveling for a year and a half!
They've been to Michigan, Canada and are on their way to Turtle Bay. Maybe
you saw them on their way down?

See you on the river!

     It's Our River Day Celebration

It's Our River Day 2011
A Celebration of Illinois Rivers through Education, Recreation, and Conservation

Saturday, September 17, 2011
Lt. Governor Simon invites communities and organizations to plan an It’s Our River Day event. Celebrated on the third Saturday in September, It’s Our River Day is a celebration of Illinois Rivers through education, recreation and conservation. Rivers have been the foundation of communities throughout time, providing food, resources and transportation. By participating in It’s Our River Day, communities will come together to learn about, protect and enjoy our vital resource.

Last year we had over 60 It’s Our River Day events across the State. These events included river clean ups, canoe/kayaking trips, educational booths at festivals, fundraisers, recycling days and much more. Help us make this year bigger and better by planning an event today.

Let us know about your It’s Our River Day event by filling out and returning the registration sheet. Your It’s Our River Day event will then be publicized on the Lt. Governor’s website, joining dozens of other events across the state for Illinois citizens who want to celebrate It’s Our River Day.

Register your It’s Our River Day event here.

For details on the many It’s Our River Day activities on September 17, see our Map of Events.

Dumpers Leave Trash At Canoe Launch........

Late last week, someone dumped trash at the same canoe launch where this weekend's cleanup of the Sangamon River was set to kick off from.  The cleanup is part of Saturday's "It's Our River Day" activities scheduled across Illinois.  Before the trash was removed, some items were found in the debris that could identify the dumper.  More debris was dumped 3/4 mile away, and the dumper set it on fire, scorching a nearby tree........

US Coast Guard News Release

UPDATE: Coast Guard responds to reports of crude oil in Bayou Dupont

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard continues the response to a report of a crude oil discharge in Bayou Dupont and north Barataria Bay, Tuesday.
Coast Guard Sector New Orleans is coordinating response efforts with Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office, Louisiana State Police, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Louisiana Department of Natural Resources.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 2:05 p.m., Sunday, from a Plaquemine's Parish operator, that a pipeline from a platform was leaking crude oil into Bayou Dupont and north Barataria Bay. During the investigation of the report, a second leak was located in a two-inch flow line attached to a wellhead associated with this platform.

The platform and associated wellheads are classified as orphaned by LDNR with the last owner of record listed as Cedyco Corp. Under authority provided by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Coast Guard issued an administrative order to Cedyco to secure the source of the discharge and to conduct cleanup operations. The Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund has been opened to provide monetary support for any federal clean-up operations. The Coast Guard has contracted Oil Mop, an oil spill removal organization, for clean-up operations.

Response crews have secured the source of the first reported discharge. They have also reduced the flow from the leak in the 2-inch flow line, and are working to fully secure it.

The Coast Guard and State of Louisiana officials are on scene investigating other potential leaks and overseeing the operations of the OSRO. Oil containment and clean-up operations are ongoing as 3,000 feet of containment boom is deployed to minimize the environmental impact. Oil skimming and recovery operations continue with three skimmers currently on scene.

LAWLF is on scene to assess any impacts to wildlife. There are currently no reports of impacts to wildlife.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.

World Water Monitoring Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness of the importance of protecting water resources around the world by engaging people to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. World Water Monitoring Day is officially celebrated on September 18, but monitoring and educational events can take place any time between March 22 and December 31. During this time, people of all ages throughout the world community will have an opportunity to monitor the quality of their local watersheds and enter the results of their efforts into an international database. Simple monitoring kits are available for purchase by anyone interested in participating. These kits can be ordered at any time.

For more information, visit World Water Monitoring Day (http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org/).

Preston Honea......

    “Golddigger” at Woodland Marina

My good friend Preston Honea is not doing well and his daughter Pam asked me to get the word out to all the boaters that knew him.

Former Con Trios Yacht Club member and good friend to many of us in the boating community, Preston Honea (used to have the boat “Golddigger” at Woodland Marina is about to celebrate his 75th Birthday on Tuesday, September 13th. Preston has been battling health issues for a while now and is pretty much confined to his home and is only able to be up for a couple of hours at a time. I’m sure he would appreciate hearing from his old friends up on the river so here is his daughter Pam’s email address. Pam will print out the emails received and give them to him on his Birthday.

Saturday, September 17th, 2011 2pm till 9pm+

Band from 4pm to 8:30pm.
The Bands main attraction is a Fiddle Player. He is a very accomplished expert violinist. You'll love him! The name of the band is "Country Fusion".

Agenda: Pub Crawl, Band, Golf Chipping Contest, 50/50 Raffle, Popcorn, Peanuts, Horseshoes, Washer Throw, Campfires, Fireworks.

Good times! Sorry the Pony Ride guy was booked.

The pre-entertainment show will be the raising of the CTYC tent beginning about 12pm to 1pm. between Longshot and Palisades.

I need help with the following:

50/50 Raffle. Have not had one for a while, buck up!

Golf Chipping contest / afternoon, see how it goes? I have all the golf balls. I do need a target like a wash tub or something special.

Who wants to shoot off some fireworks?

Anyone have horseshoes with pegs?

We could use 20 bales of straw for general seating or in the case of a wet ground.

Scott has been great volunteering to transport the trailer. Can anyone else do it this time? It is at YCSL.

Volunteers for the tent raising are welcome. figure 1pm on Saturday.

Andy at My River Home says there is a lot of firewood around the property. A little help with that in the afternoon would be great.

Please help CTYC support Portage Des Sioux. Heaven knows after this spring they could use some business!

Thanks in advance for all of your support next weekend!
Event price: $10 per person at the door/tent.

KJ's, Palisades and Longshot are having great food specials. Please support them. Please also support their beer/liqour stands.

News Release From BoatUS

The following article is written about a hurricane, but the tips could apply to any severe storm.......

What To Do With A Trailerboat In A Hurricane
BoatUS Helpful Hurricane Storage Tips

ALEXANDRIA, Va. September 12, 2011 – As hurricanes approach the US mainland, it used to be that boaters on the coast only had to worry about making storm preparations. However, Hurricane Irene’s large destructive path recently showed that trailer boaters located far inland need to make preparations as well. For those who keep a trailer boat in their backyard, driveway or marina parking lot, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has these helpful hurricane storage tips as we enter the “peak” 2012 hurricane season, which runs through November 30.

Do a trailer check-up now: Inspect your trailer today to ensure it will be operable when it’s needed. Bearings should be greased, tires inflated and lights working.

Plan your escape: Map out an evacuation route and make the decision early if you are planning to take the boat with you or leave behind. Bridges may have restrictions on towing boats.

When the Storm Strikes

Take it home: Remove all loose gear such as fenders, cushions or any extra other equipment and gear like rods, tackle boxes and electronics and store at home. This includes the boat’s papers.

The boat “wins” the garage: If you have a choice of putting the boat or car in the garage, pick the boat. That’s because a boat is lighter and more vulnerable to winds. If you have to store a trailer boat outside, placing the rig next to a building (on the lee side of approaching storm) for protection is good. Keep it away from trees.

Tilt me: Remove the transom and any cockpit drain plugs and tilt the trailer tongue up so any water entering the boat exits aft through scuppers or a drain hole. Let some air out of the trailer tires and chock the wheels.

Twist me: Secure gas tank caps tightly to prevent water from entering. Secure any hatches.

Bye bye bimini: Remove the bimini. Trailerable sailboats should have their masts lowered, safely lashed and any sails removed. Towing or mooring covers should be installed and secured with extra line.

Strap me: Secure the boat to the trailer with line or straps. If you have the ability, anchoring the boat and trailer rig with screw-type ground anchors adds extra protection.

Fill up the little guy: Small, lightweight and simply-built outboard powered boats and paddle craft can be placed on the ground and partially filled with a garden hose to add weight. (Rain will add a lot more water later.) This has the added advantage of giving you emergency water (non-drinking). If you choose to keep the boat on top of a trailer, ensure you add blocks between the trailer frame and springs to support the added weight.

Lift me down: Whenever possible, boats on lifts should be stored ashore or moved to a safer location in the water. If the boat must be left on its lift, remove the drain plug so the weight of accumulated rainwater will not collapse the lift. Tie the boat securely to its lifting machinery to prevent the boat from swinging or drifting away. Plug the engine’s exhaust outlet and again, strip the boat. Make sure cockpit drains are free of debris.

 Boat Manufacturer

    Brunswick Stock ........

According to a note released by RBC Capitol Markets, Brunswick Corp's position is more stable than investors might believe, indicating an enticing risk/reward scenario.  The note was intended to address misconceptions about Brunswick.  Brunswick is expecting low demand for boats throughout 2012, however, the company's restructuring will allow it's stock to be a good buy, as it's other divisions are doing well........

US Coast Guard News Release

    Lake Michigan.....

Coast Guard rescues 4-year-old boy adrift on inflatable raft

CLEVELAND — A Coast Guard boatcrew rescued a 4-year-old boy who was adrift on an inflatable raft in Lake Michigan Monday afternoon.

The boy's name is not being released. There is no imagery associated with this case.

The crew of Coast Guard Station Sheboygan, Wis., was contacted just after 4 p.m. CST by personnel at the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department, who had been contacted previously by a Waldo, Wis., man. The man reported he had been swimming off Kohler-Andrae State Park with his family, when he left his 4-year-old son on an inflatable raft to go swimming but found he was unable to get back to the raft.

The man returned to shore and called authorities for help. The boy was reportedly not wearing a lifejacket.

After receiving the call from the sheriff's department, a Station Sheboygan rescue boatcrew launched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small and were on scene in about 10 minutes and recovered the boy about 300 yards from shore. The crew transported him back to Station Sheboygan, where he was met by awaiting EMS and ultimately turned over to his parents in good health.

The Coast Guard recommends that people stay together whenever recreating on the water, especially when children and weak swimmers are involved.

For more information, contact Lt. Casey Steuer, Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan public affairs officer, at 414-405-6436.

Coast Guard responds to reports of crude oil in Bayou Dupont

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is responding to a report of crude oil in Bayou Dupont, north of Barataria Bay.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 2:05 p.m., Sunday, that a pipeline from a platform owned by Cedyco Corp., was leaking crude oil into Bayou Dupont. A second leak was located on a two inch flowline attached to wellhead 16.

Cedyco Corp., has contracted Oil Mop, an oil spill response organization, for cleanup operations.

The Coast Guard is on scene and overseeing the operations of the OSRO.

There are currently no reports of impacts to wildlife.

Currently, response crews have secured the flowline attached to wellhead 16 and they are working to secure the pipeline.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.

Hi River Bill,

This past Labor Day Weekend there was a group of fellow River Rats rafted together, at the top of Two Branch. Mike from the boat "Noon Somewhere, " decided to take his dog Libby on a wave-runner for a potty run to a small patch of sand. He got about 50 yards from our boats, and the Asian Carp started to jump. As you can see from the picture there were hundreds of them. The jumping lasted at least 5 minutes, just sorry I didn't record it as a movie.

Saturday's Charity Catfish Tournament

Hello Bill,

Just wanted to let you know how the tournament went. Showing for the tournament was a bit slow at first, Weather was playing against us. But we had 11 Die Hard fisherman that showed up for the event. It was a tough day for fishing, but our fisherman prevailed First place took it with 35.2 pounds, second place took it with 10.3, third place took it with 3.2 pounds. Big fish was 8.9 pounds. After the weigh in we did our fish fry and had a wonderful turn out. We did a Charity raffle and between the raffle and the tournament we were able to raise a substantial amount of money for our Charity. We have a special thanks to go out to Johns Boat Harbor they hosted our ramping, to our surprise they donated 100% of the ramping fee back to the Charity. Al Morgan hosted the weigh in and fish fry at his place. He dedicated a lot of hard work and time into making this event possible. Dave and Carrie Ash both stepped up to help with this event in a big way. Dave took the time to man the deep fryer along with Steve K both of them made a wonderful meal possible. My brother Alan and his fiance manned the grill the brats turned out wonderful. Sheet metal workers local 36 helped with man power for the event and provided 3 volunteers, Tom, Marty and Robert. Robert and I processed the fish for the event. Their help in this event really made the difference. Ron Stone from Stone Signs in St peters donated the cooking oil for the fish fry. A thank you to Mike D for allowing us to use his grill. A special thank you goes out to the people that donated items for the raffle, The people of Cabelas donated a couple fishing rods and fishing equipment, St Charles Harley -Davidson with the help of Carrie ash donated a wonderful give basket. Mary from johns boat harbor donated a very nice vase and candle package. Al Morgan donated a brand new radio. Of Course a big thank you to you Bill for your help and patience with this event. Thank you to all listed above and to the countless others that had a hand in making this event a success.

Sincerely Yours,

Dustin Barbaglia

 26 States in 80 Days

Tom and Nancy Caruso are retracing the route of Lewis and Clark from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Astoria, Oregon by BOAT...

They purchased the center console off of Ebay in Virginia, then trailered it to Pittsburgh and began their voyage in mid July.

They passed through St. Louis, stopping at Alton Marina the weekend of August 6 and 7th, 2011

September 11, 2011 - 8:00pm - Dear Josi, today we completed the sale of the boat. She is now in Vancouver with its new owner Shawn! In case you didn't know, people refer to boats as girls and often mention them as "she" or "her". Although we are sad to see her go we are happy to see it go to a good owner. It will be used for fishing in the Pacific Ocean of the Pacific Northwest. The Undaunted Courage served us very well. She is a great boat! We happened to see an amazing deal on a short trip to Alaska that includes going to British Columbia, Canada, so we are going. We will be able to add 1 more state and 1 more country onto our motto of "26 states in 80 days". Obviously, this is not where Lewis and Clark went, but we just don't want this trip of a lifetime to end. We also need to give Tony, our house-sitter time to move out. It wouldn't be very nice to him if we came home early. We may not have cell coverage or internet while we are gone, so don't be upset if you don't see any posts. We will leave Tuesday afternoon.

Air National Guard Families Helped By Bass Tourneys........

Even before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 the National Guard have taken some of the same duties of the regular armed forces.  While there are support systems in place for other branches of the armed forces, there were none in place for the Guard.  Steve Parker, a master sergeant with the Illinois Air National Guard is working with Airman and Family Readiness Program manager of the 183rd Fighter Wing, Joe Ward, to change that.  Ward has organized bass fishing tournaments to raise funds and awareness of the trials Guard families face.  On average, the tourneys generate around $1,000 to support the Airman and Family Readiness Program........
