who hail out of Grafton Harbor......

Hi Bill,

Here are some pictures from last Saturday night on the beach. Our daughter, Marina, was posing with “her” band (Dave and Kene of the Keystone River Rats) before they played some tunes around the bonfire that night. They rocked the Big Kahuna at Grafton Harbor on Sunday afternoon and it was awesome! Make sure everyone comes out to see the Keystone River Rats and all the other bands at Rockin on the River on September 10th. It’s going to be a blast and fun for all!

See you soon!

     Man Paddleboarding To Benefit Hospital........

A year ago, Matthew Crofton was suffering from a respiratory illness that caused him to lapse into a coma that lasted two weeks.  The doctors were predicting that Crofton would not regain consciousness.  Crofton beat the predictions, and after months of therapy, he learned to walk again.  A paddleboard was part of that therapy.  Now, Crofton is trying to beat the Stand Up Paddleboard distance record in order to raise funds for the hospital that saved him, as well as write a book on his experiences........

Tom and Nancy Caruso are retracing the route of Lewis and Clark from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Astoria, Oregon by BOAT...

They passed through St. Louis, stopping at Alton Marina the weekend of August 6 and 7th, 2011

August 30, 2011 - 10:00pm - Dear Josi, we are so excited to be back in the water we can barely contain ourselves. Its been 3 weeks since we pulled out of the Missouri River and we couldn't be happier to be back in the water. We're going to spend 2 nights here in this marina before we head down the Snake River. The weather here is absolutely perfect. Its no longer incredibly hot. Although they expect to have some warm weather maybe near 90, in the water we should be very comfortable since the nights are cool. It should drop into the 50's each night which is great for snuggling! We bought another blanket just in case it gets too cold. The cooler weather also keeps the bugs away. We really can't express how happy we are right now. We are listening to Uncle Tom's favorite band right now (Genesis) while sitting on the deck of the boat. We've never been able to sit on the deck at night since we've owned it because of the bugs and the heat. Well we understand that someone went to kindergarten this week! We are so proud of you and wish we could have been there with you on your first day of school. You are going to have a wonderful time in school!

    Marina Dredging Operations Bumped Up........

The south side of the Hannibal Marina is now more mud than water, so the Marina dredging project will commence this week.  Tuesday, equipment was slated to begin arriving on site.  Recently, Andy Dorian, the Director of the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department, had announced that the dredging project would not begin until after Labor Day.  Earlier in the year, it was looking like the Mississippi River would be too high to dredge the Marina, now officials are concerned that the River will be too low........

     2011 NATIONAL RECREATIONAL BOATING SURVEY

August 30, 2011

The US Coast Guard's Boating Safety Division is currently fielding its 2011 National Recreational Boating Survey. This survey is a key element in the overall Coast Guard boating safety strategic plan to reduce fatalities, injuries, and property damages. To conduct this survey, the Coast Guard is using the services of ICF Macro, a private contractor with vast experience in the conduct of statistical surveys.

All information collected from the boating public will be used by the Coast Guard only, and for the sole purpose of creating statistical summaries. Personal data such as e-mail or street addresses may be used only to re-contact respondents with reminders if necessary. If you have further questions regarding this survey, do not hesitate to contact the Coast Guard's National Recreational Boating Survey technical manager at 202-372-1102.

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS: Irene Could Cause Up to $500 Million Damage to Recreational Boats
Upstate NY and New England Regions Hit Hardest

ALEXANDRIA, Va., August 30, 2011 -- Coastal areas are usually the hardest hit when a hurricane strikes. However, early reports from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) indicate that Hurricane Irene struck inland lake and river regions in New York and New England particularly hard, including the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys, Lake George, NY, Lake Champlain, NY, and Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, as well as Cape Cod, MA. The nation’s largest boat owner’s group estimates the total damage to recreational boats from South Carolina to Maine could total up to $500 million (editor’s note: this early estimate applies to boats only; this figure does not include any boating infrastructure). The last hurricane to strike the US, Hurricane Ike (2008), was estimated to cause $200 million in damage to recreational boats.

Boaters who hauled vessels ashore in anticipation of the storm were largely spared damage. “We only have five minor claims for boats that were damaged while stored ashore,” said Senior Vice President of Marine Insurance Claims Division Carroll Robertson. “The majority of claims we are now seeing are from those who kept their vessels on moorings, which either broke free or were sunk by waves and rains,” she added.
Irene showed boaters again that it doesn’t take a direct hit to have damage or a sinking. Many inland areas traditionally haven’t experienced hurricanes, so some may have been caught off-guard by the ferocity of the wind, waves and flooding.
BoatUS has reports that boaters, marinas and boat clubs did take significant measures in the days leading up to Irene’s arrival coordinating storm preparations, and believes local marinas and marine businesses deserve large credit for their efforts with mitigating further damage.
Over 1,000 BoatUS insureds took advantage of the “Hurricane Haul-Out” feature in their BoatUS insurance policy that helps defray the cost to remove a boat from the water. “Every boat owner should have this feature in their policy. It makes the decision of removal less based on cost and more in the long-term interest of having a boat come through unscathed,” added Robertson.
On-the-water reports from the TowBoatUS towing fleet vary. With a significant local boating population in their area, TowBoatUS New Bedford, MA, reported seeing only 50 boats hauled out prior to the storm and has now seen over 15 salvages or wreck removals with numbers climbing. On the other hand, TowBoatUS Oregon Inlet, NC, reported seeing over 500 vessels hauled to safety prior to the storm’s arrival, and just two post-storm salvages – even with a significant storm surge estimated at seven feet.
“It appears that areas with mandatory evacuations from the Carolinas to New Jersey, boaters made good preparations,” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services Jerry Cardarelli. “And where folks stayed at home, such as the case in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where they thought hurricane barriers would protect the boats, there was significantly less effort.”

PORTE DES MORTS PASSAGE, Wis.

SOUTH HAVEN INLET, Mich. — Investigators from Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven, Mich., are working closely with commercial salvage companies to develop a plan to recover the 44-foot sailing vessel Gypsy Soul (left) and a 21-foot commercial towing vessel (right) that both ran aground two miles south of South Haven Inlet near South Haven, Mich., Saturday.

After the operator of the Gypsy Soul reportedly experienced a propulsion problem, a commercial towing vessel came to assist and tow it to shore, but, due to rough weather at the time, both vessels ultimately ran aground.

The goal is to salvage both vessels before severe weather moves into the area later this week.

Bill,

I was out today and just south of Grafton, when I stopped and talked with these 2 boys floating on a raft. They are from Germany, recently graduated high school, and are rafting from Quincy to Cape Girardeau.

They left Quincy a week ago and expect to take another week to reach Cape Girardeau. Very pleasant young men who said everyone they have met along the way have been nice to them. I gave them your website and told them when they stay on land at night, if they have internet access, to look for their picture. Hope to see it on the site.

 26 States in 80 Days

Tom and Nancy Caruso are retracing the route of Lewis and Clark from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Astoria, Oregon by BOAT...

They purchased the center console off of Ebay in Virginia, then trailered it to Pittsburgh and began their voyage in mid July.

They passed through St. Louis, stopping at Alton Marina the weekend of August 6 and 7th, 2011

August 29, 2011 - 11:15pm - Dear Josi, we have now traveled through Idaho and Washington. That means we only have 1 more state left in our journey. It is hard to believe how far we've come. We've been gone for so long now that we can barely remember anything about the first month of our journey. Yesterday we drove to Missoula, MT where we came within 2 miles (maybe less) of another major fire burning in the area. The record rains paved the way for lots of flowers and grasses. When they dry out in the hot summer months (like the record heat we've had) they create huge potential for forest fires. Right now there are over 25 fires burning in the quad-state area. We also got to see the caves at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park where we took a 2 hour tour through some beautiful caves. Because the caves are underground they maintain a constant temperature of around 50F. The temperature outside yesterday was 95F, so the cooler temperature was quite comfortable. Today we drove to Spokane, Washington, but had lunch in Couer d'Alene, Idaho while we had the wheels on the trailer rotated. This is just some regular maintenance. Once we made it into Idaho we crossed back into the Pacific time zone. We are finally back to our own time zone. Its one more step closer to home. Uncle Tom is still working on the problem with the photos. Hopefully he'll be able to fix it before we get on the boat tomorrow.

Work Continues At Melvin Price Lock And Dam........

Last year, work began at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 to repair the downstream debris shields.  The shields keep debris from obstructing the gate.  Work was put on hold earlier in the year due to high water, but resumed at the start of start of summer.  The work will entail the repair or replacement of damaged or missing shields, which will then be sandblasted and given a fresh coat of paint........

Missouri Department of Conservation....

Blue catfish study enters second year

MDC biologists recently began the second year of a blue catfish study at Truman Lake and Lake of the Ozarks as regulations are considered to protect intermediate-sized fish from overharvest and boost the numbers of larger catfish.

The goal is to gather data for a three-year study on blue catfish sizes, population and growth rates. MDC crews will run jug lines through late autumn. The catfish caught will be weighed, measured and released. Biologists will also remove spines from a certain number of fish within a range of sizes to gather age and growth information.

Since the late 1980s, anglers and Conservation Agents have expressed concerns about declining numbers of large blue catfish in Truman Lake. The same concerns have arisen in recent years at Lake of the Ozarks. Blue catfish population numbers remain healthy. But as fishing pressure has increased, the number of fish in the 20- to 80-pound range has declined. The chance to catch a very large fish is why many anglers seek blue catfish with jug lines, trot lines or rod and reel.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2010...... is from the 2010 Blessing of the Fleet.  It's Tom and Lou's cruiser "Willpower"  passing in front of the judges stand at Palisades Yacht Club.

It was a beautiful day, 248 boats participated in the Blessing, with many anchored boats watching and a good turnout of land spectators at Palisades Yacht Club and Longshot Saloon.

The St. Louis Pirates Group were firing cannons before the blessing and were a big hit with the crowd.  Mike Stanczak was flying overhead taking video for Rib Bolton and Larry Demko of Salty Dog Productions.  Captain Pat Reid was on the deck of Palisades and took a picture of each boat in the parade that passed the Judges stand.

August 27, 2011 - 10:00pm - Dear Josi, we are done with our vacation in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Tomorrow we head out to pickup our boat then its back on the road. We'll be in Idaho soon (about 3 days). Yesterday we went whitewater rafting again. Uncle Tom likes rafting so much he thinks he wants to be a river guide one day. Later on we went to a place called Jenny Lake near the base of the Tetons. We saw some beautiful views of this lke and the mountains at sunset. Today we got up at 5:30am and went to take photos of the sunrise on the Grand Tetons at their 2 most famously photographed locations: Oxbo Bend and Snake River Overlook (this is where Ansel Adams took his famous photo of the mountain range). We then drove back through Yellowstone and got to see Mammoth Hot Springs, a collection of several hot springs in the same location. We're in Bozeman for the night. Tomorrow we're going to have a little bit of maintenance done on the trailer before we move on our way.

Sangamon River Near New Salem, Illinois

If Abe's River Were Cleaner, They Would Come........

Paddling buffs are interested in designating another portion of the Sangamon River as a historic water trail.  Back in 1965, then Illinois Governor Otto Kerner designated the Lincoln Heritage Canoe Trail between the Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park, close to Decatur to Petersburg at Lincoln's New Salem Historic Site.  Supporters of the water trail are hoping that historical designation will instill pride in the River so that those who use and live along it will keep it clean........

Pictures of the Day ...... were sent to us by Capt'n Darryll Weil who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat..... After You.

Bill:

Went to a bonfire at Camp Carl tonight (Thursday). You know what I am talking about!

Had some old Christmas decorations that needed a proper disposal / sendoff. With all due ceremony all but the Santa in the boat were cremated in a very dignified ceremony. Some of them "Pickers" grabbed the boat one. No offense to anyone in Hannibal, just happened to have the old plywood street sign. There was a small contingent trying to save Santa but Mary Beth overpowered them and in the fire he went.

Pictures of the Day ...... were sent to us by Capt'n Dave Diederich who hails out of Alton marina in the boat...... Wind Dancer

Hi Bill:

This past week I had the opportunity to fly on the airSHIP Zeppelin NT Eureka. The flight departed from Bi-State Parks Airport in Cahokia and did two loops around downtown St. Louis.

After we left the ground, all the passengers were free to move about the cabin, from the love seat with the panoramic window in the rear to the cockpit in the front. They even opened up the windows so that you could hang your head out the window. The ride was very quiet, smooth and offered outstanding views of St. Louis.

It was a little expensive but still a very worth-while trip. One of those things that I can cross off my bucket list.

Here are a few photos - hope you enjoy.

Boat Beached At Captain Ron's, Taking On Water........

Friday afternoon, Jim Denooyer's 3,000 horsepower, 32 foot Skater began taking on water as Denooyer was participating in the Shootout Poker Run.  Denooyer beached the Skater at Captain Ron's, and called in TowBoatU.S. for assistance.  Airbags were brought in, and the Skater was refloated.  The vessel was towed about a mile back to the Hurricane Deck boat ramp, where the Skater was hauled onto it's trailer.  A peek under the boat revealed a hole........

  Missouri River Flooding

      South Dakota Residents Returning Home........

Nearly three months after flooding along the Missouri River forced residents from their Pierre and Fort Pierre, South Dakota homes, they have begun to move back into the area.  Emergency earthen levees hastily constructed in June limited damage by keeping the Missouri River from sweeping through their neighborhood.  Many homeowners did have to contend with damage caused by rising groundwater, however.  As the waters recede, officials will begin the task of tallying up the damage, and making repairs.........

    Angler Reels In Prosthetic Leg........

Last month, Beth Krohn was fishing on Lake Ida in Alexandria, Minnesota when her line snagged onto something.  Hoping it wasn't a body, Krohn reeled in her line.  What she landed was a prosthetic leg that was lost three years ago by Pam Riley, who lost it while swimming.  Krohn returned the prosthesis to Riley, who was tracked down by the limb manufacturer.  Riley stated that she had wondered what someone might think upon seeing a leg floating on the water's surface........

Mississippi River Near The Birds Point Levee

Conservationists Say Levee Breach Hurt Wildlife........

While it is common knowledge that farmers and landowners have taken a hit in the wake of the intentional breach of the Birds Point Levee, conservationists state that the wildlife in the area has been affected as well.  During the flooding of 130,000 acres along the Mississippi River, many animals perished due to the rapid rise in water.  Those who survived have faced limited food supplies, leading to conservation agents setting aside their policy of not feeding the wildlife........

Missouri Department of Conservation

Foundation seeks contributions to upgrade trout park

LEBANON, Mo. – If you have ever wished it was easier to get to the water at Bennett Spring State Park, the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation (MCHF) has a way to turn your wish into a reality.

One of the most popular places to fish at the park is just upstream from the stone bridge adjacent to one of the hatchery buildings operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). This site also offers a stunning view of the park’s iconic dam and waterfall. Years ago, this bank was covered with a rough concrete slurry to prevent erosion. That was an inexpensive solution to the erosion problem, but it is unattractive and difficult to negotiate on foot.

MCHF, a nonprofit citizen’s group set up to support conservation- and recreation-related projects, wants to replace the makeshift bank covering with a permanent, concrete walkway and viewing platform. As envisioned, the platform would be 72 feet long and 5 feet wide. MCHF is trying to raise $45,000 to fund the project... click here to read more

US Coast Guard news Release

     Missouri River

Date: August 25, 2011
Contact: CWO Ancil Brown
(314) 406-4826

UPDATE 7: Coast Guard opens portion of Missouri River

ST. LOUIS The Coast Guard, in partnership with the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the states of Missouri and Kansas, reopened a portion of the lower Missouri River to all vessel traffic, Thursday.

The opened portion of the river, from mile marker 0.0 to mile marker 380.0, encompasses the area from St. Louis to approximately 10 miles upriver from Kansas City, Mo.

Although this portion of the river is now open to all vessel traffic, waterway users are cautioned that high water conditions still exist. Vessel operators are urged to use caution in and near the river as sustained high water could have modified bottom conditions and exposed or created navigation hazards. Waterway users should also contact state and local emergency management and law enforcement officials to ensure that boat ramps are open and accessible.

The Missouri River closure from mile marker 380 to mile marker 811, near Gavin's Point Dam in Yankton, S.D., remains in place. The Big Sioux River closure, from the confluence with the Missouri River to the Military Road Bridge in north Sioux City, S.D., is also still in place.

The Coast Guard, in concert with the Army Corps of Engineers and state officials, will continue to monitor water levels in an effort to open the river as soon as levee conditions and public safety concerns warrant.

The Coast Guard advises mariners to monitor VHF-FM channels 16 and 22 for any changes to the closure.

The above was reprinted from the US Coast Guard website.

The education and assistance provided by Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) agents and biologists at the event helped make it a convenient first fishing trip for several families that day.

Hayti resident Markeeta Guyton’s three-year-old twins, Marshayn and Marshaun, took home two of those free fishing poles after a day that Guyton said made it easy to take her twins fishing for the first time.... click here to continue reading on MDC website

August 24, 2011 - 10:00pm - Dear Josi, we now enjoying our time in Jackson, Wyoming. Aunt Nae's friend Mike and his wife Amber have a beautiful home that is actually in the Grand Teton National Park. All the homes in the city of Kelly cannot be sold. If the current owners don't pass their property on to their children then the state takes ownership of the land, levels everything, and makes it look like their was never a house there. We drove through the south entrance of Yellowstone and by the Grand Teton mountain range yesterday on the way to Mike's house. On the way we saw the smoke of large wildfire burning to the south of us. This morning the smoke had settled into the valley where we are making the visibility very low. It wasn't until the afternoon when the winds picked up and blew the smoke out of the valley leaving us with an opportunity to have some incredible views from the the top of the Jackson Hole ski resort. We took a gondola to the top of the mountain where we could see for at least a hundred miles! We finished off the day at the Jackson rodeo (neither of us have ever been to a rodeo before). Tomorrow we will spend the day mapping out the rest of trip so we know when we might get home. It looks like we'll be back home in about 3 weeks. We have now been gone 49 days, 7 full weeks! Wow!

Paddling Races Cancelled Along Missouri River........

This weekend's Race for the Rivers kayak and canoe events have been cancelled on account of anticipated high waters.  Heavy rains upstream over the past weekend will likely push the Missouri River over flood stage by Saturday.  Paddling races of 20, 41 and 65 miles along the Missouri River were scheduled by Greenway Network, a local environmental group.  The related festival in St. Charles' Frontier Park, as well as a 5 and 25 mile bike ride will go on as scheduled........

Illinois River At Lake Chautauqua, Illinois

Lake Drawdown Wastes Fish, Smells Bad........

Residents around Lake Chautauqua are complaining about the smell smell of dead fish following the drawdown of the north pool.  The Lake was drawn down to to imitate the Illinois River prior to the changes made to allow for navigation.  Fishing is allowed at the Lake, however, the Lake was set up as a migratory bird refuge.  Some residents are concerned that there is a secret push to promote waterfowl hunting, at the expense of fishing........

Mississippi River Near Keokuk, Iowa

Boat Club Dock Too Close To Sewer Discharge Pipe........

When the flooding of 2008 receded, the South Side Boat Club in Keokuk, Iowa was destroyed.  Back in November, the new building was completed, but there was no dock.  A few weeks ago, the club moved a dock into position without the permission of the city.  The reason this is an issue is that Keokuk's sewer discharge pipe is just upstream.  Until further notice, boat club vessels may not be tied up to the dock........

Ban On Marina Fishing On Hold....  For Now....

Recently, the Alton City Council Committee of the Whole voted down a resolution that would have banned fishing within the boundaries of the Alton Marina.  The ban was proposed because of unsafe situations witnessed at the marina.  The motion was tabled a few weeks back, as the aldermen were waiting to hear the opinion of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The resolution is not necessarily dead in the water, the aldermen are looking for different wording to deal with the issue........

The work to be performed includes greeting visitors, opening and closing the visitor center, stocking brochure racks, selling merchandise from the sales area, and general housekeeping of the visitor center both inside and outside.

The visitor center is open now through November 4th Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Beginning November 7th until April the hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Shifts for the volunteer hosts will be determined based on availability of the volunteers and the number of volunteers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will consider anyone that is interested in volunteering regardless if you can volunteer a few hours or a few days a week. Any help will be appreciated.

If you are interested in becoming a Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center Volunteer Host contact Park Ranger Annie Hickman at 217-774-3951 ext. 7007 or by e-mail at anna.e.hickman@usace.army.mil. You can also stop by the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center any time that it is open and fill out a volunteer application.

Lake Of The Ozarks

A Look Back In Lake Time to 1933.......

The May 1934 issue of Motor Boating magazine featured an article about the then-new Lake of the Ozarks, penned by H.H. Meyer.  The Lake was nearly three years old at the time, but had already earned the title of the largest manmade reservoir in the nation.  At the time, there was relatively little development along the Lake's shores.  The slow growth was attributed to the Great Depression........

First-time striper angler sets state record

Bruce Cunningham was hoping for a “nice” fishing trip.
Thanks to Missouri’s world-class fishing, he got a bonus.

GAINESVILLE–“You’re not going to believe this until you try it.”

According to Bruce Cunningham, that is what his brothers said when trying to persuade him to go fishing with them in June. Brad and Brock Cunningham had discovered the excitement of catching striped bass at Bull Shoals Lake, and they wanted to share it with their older brother.
Bruce decided to play along, and at 1 a.m. June 18 he found himself holding a new state-record striper weighing in at 60 pounds, 9 ounces. The catch nudged aside the previous pole-and-line record, a 58-pounder caught by John West, of Republic, in July 2010.
Cunningham, 30, of Fordland, was fishing from a boat in the upper reaches of Bull Shoals when the record fish grabbed the large plastic minnow he was casting. He was fishing in about 40 feet of water.
The fish was 47 inches long and had a girth of slightly more than 36 inches.
The two younger Cunningham brothers were rewarded for sharing their discovery. They boated several other stripers that topped 40 pounds the night Bruce caught his.
Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) are native to the Atlantic Ocean but make spawning runs up rivers along the East Coast. These ocean-run striped bass can grow to 6 feet long and 125 pounds. Although not native to Missouri, “stripers” have adapted well to fresh-water reservoirs and streams. However, they do not grow as large in fresh water.
Bull Shoals is Missouri’s striped-bass mecca right now, thanks to a one-time stocking by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in 1998. That year, a mix-up resulted in the stocking of 19,000 striped bass. Ken Shirley, district fisheries supervisor for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the fish were intended for Norfork Lake.
“We were expecting a shipment of walleye for Bull Shoals,” said Shirley. “A summer helper called to tell us that a shipment of fish had arrived at the hatchery and asked where they were supposed to go. We thought it was the walleyes, so we told him to take them to Bull Shoals. It turned out they were striped bass.”
Shirley said the surviving fish from that mistaken stocking now weigh between 30 and 60 pounds and are near the end of their lives. He expects the boom in trophy striper fishing at Bull Shoals to taper off over the next four or five years as fish from the accidental stocking slowly disappear.
More information about Missouri fishing records is available at http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/reports/records

 River History

     Palisades Yacht Club

Palisades Yacht Club was originally constructed in 1941. The name of the original owner is obscure. The Coast Guard took over the building during World War II as there was concern that German subs could possibly use the river to attack inland American cities.

There is still a small flag between Palisades YC and the shrine that marks the landing used by the riverboats and the SeaBee’s during that period.

Palisades Yacht Club was purchased by Leo & Doris Skrabacz in 1971. They loved the Mississippi and eventually their son, Robert “Dale” Skrabacz operated it after their deaths in 1999 and 2000.

In December 2006, Palisades was purchased by Scott and Amy Lewis. Scott and Amy have made improvements in the facility, adding new docks in 2007, increasing restaurant hours & enhancing the menu as well as fighting the flooding that occurs each year! Future improvements include new sailboat/uncovered docks coming this fall.

Mississippi River Near Buffalo, Iowa

Man Falls From Barge, Rescued From Island........

Early Monday morning, a worker on a barge fell into the Mississippi River near Buffalo, Iowa.  Rescue workers found the man several miles downriver on an island on the Illinois side of the River.  The barge worker was wearing a life jacket, and just floated with the current until he was deposited on the island.  The man was retrieved by crew members aboard a Buffalo Fire Department boat.  The barge worker complained about back pain, so he was taken to an area hospital........

August 22, 2011 - 10:00pm - Dear Josi, today we saw Old Faithful! It is a geyser that is one of the most famous icons in the United States. Along with Washington D.C. and New York City, Yellowstone is extremely popular among tourists throughout the world. We have seen a huge number of Europeans here. Two-thirds of the worlds geysers are located here in Yellowstone, which sits on top of a huge magma (lava or liquid rock) pocket. Several hundred thousand years ago the pressure created a gigantic volcano which exploded. Today Yellowstone is one of the most active geological formations on our planet. Old Faithful shot steaming hot water up about 90 feet into the air. It was like the most powerful fountain at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. It was given its name "Old Faithful" because it used to erupt with such regularity that you could set your watch to it. Due to lots of changes in the landscape, mostly earthquakes, it now erupts about every 91 minutes, plus or minus 10 minutes. We also some other geysers that were not as tall but they lasted a long time. The longest we saw was 29 minutes. Old Faithful was only about 2 minutes. Later we drove to Yellowstone Lake which had a very big harbor. We wish we could have brought our boat since they had a boat ramp for people to launch their boats from. We ate dinner at the Lake Lodge which had a gorgeous view of the lake. We also saw some buffalo, a male mule dear with some beautiful antlers.Yellowstone is an incredible place that we hope you get to see very soon.

Fishy Tales From Fresno, California

    Thieves Swipe Trout From Fishery........

California State Fish and Wildlife wardens are investigating what appears to be the first large scale theft from a state fish hatchery.  When workers arrived at the hatchery Sunday, they found the gates pried open and and blood on the floor.  Thieves made off with up to 1,000 trophy sized trout, that were three years old and weighed three pounds each.  Fish and Wildlife wardens are looking at fish markets, as trout sells for up to $7 per pound........

Illinois River At Peoria Lake

Island Building Drawing Opposition........

A project officially known as the Peoria Riverfront Development Illinois Upper Mid-sized Island Critical Restoration Project Stage 1 has drawn the ire of an environmental group.  The project involves the construction of three islands in Peoria Lake in order to reduce sedimentation along the Illinois River.  River Rescue, an activist group continuing the work of the late environmentalist Tom Edwards, is concerned that Illinois may not be able to keep up with the long term maintenance of the islands, and that the project will just reduce the surface area of Peoria Lake........
