Sunday’s Forecast: Family Fun

ALTON, IL – Recently, the weather in the St. Louis region has been interesting to say the least. How do meteorologists know if a storm will produce rain or hail? Will there be a light breeze or a tornado? Will tomorrow be warmer or cooler than today?

On Sunday, July 10, from 1:00-3:00, the National Great Rivers Museum will welcome presenters from the St. Louis Science Center who will introduce museum visitors to the science of meteorology. This subject may seem daunting at first, but by creating weather instruments such as barometers, thermometers, and wind vanes, participants will gain an understanding of how weather patterns are predicted and monitored.

This program is offered as part of the Sunday Funday summer program series, presented by the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation. Meet at the National Great Rivers Museum on the second Sunday of each summer month, now through September, to enjoy some quality time with the whole family!

The National Great Rivers Museum is located at 2 Lock and Dam Way, East Alton, IL 62024, just off Route 143, 2 miles east of the Clark Bridge. Call (618) 462-6979 for more information.

Former Wastewater Plant To Become Wildlife Habitat.........

A retired sewage treatment plant near Hinkson Creek in Columbia, Missouri will be converted to a natural wildlife habitat.  The project was made possible with a $40,000 grant provided by 3M and another $20,000 was brought in by Columbia's park sales tax.  The project will entail creating wetlands and bottomlands to give migratory and aquatic waterfowl a place to live, as well as forming a 140 acre stormwater hold that will slow the rise of Hinkson Creek........

  Flooding Commentaries

     Nature Should Manage Future Flooding........

Flooding is part of the yearly cycle of a River and in the past, water was able to flow into floodplains, which nature designed to absorb the extra water.  All across the United States, these floodplains have been separated from the Rivers by levees, the those lands put to other uses.  Many economic benefits have been realized by utilization of the floodplains, but the ever increasing costs and severity of flooding indicate otherwise........

  Missouri River Flooding

Ag Secretary Questions Corps On Flooding........

Recently, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack penned a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers questioning their decision to not release more water from the upper Missouri River reservoirs.  So far, over 560,000 acres across seven states are flooded, about 447,000 of which are farmland.  The Missouri River is expected to be close to record flood stage into the fall.  The Corps states that they will be assessing the floods of 2011, to determine what policy changes need to be made........

 Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Mudslide Along The Bluffs Still Stable........

Officials are keeping an eye on the location of a mudslide along the Alton Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.  At this time, the land seems to be stable, but that could change in a hurry.  Alton is monitoring the situation even though the lions share of the mudslide occurred on private property.  The reason is that more shifting ground could endanger other properties or even peoples' safety........

Back in February, Amanda Castelli took over the ownership of The Rotten Apple Pub, and began making changes.  First, she purchased the building, where the prior owners were leasing it, and started updating and painting it.  Expansions to the pub are under consideration, starting with a deck above the patio. Changes were also made to the menu, some items were added, while the Cajun dishes are on hiatus, until the selections have been reworked........

 Missouri Department of Natural Resources

      News Release......

Three state park swimming beaches reopen following low bacteria levels

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JULY 7, 2011 – Swimming beaches at Cuivre River, Finger Lakes and Mark Twain state parks have been reopened after results of water samples taken Tuesday showed bacteria levels had dropped significantly below the department’s acceptable levels for state park beaches.

Even though the bacteria levels at Grand Glaize Beach at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, also known as Public Beach #2, were minimal, the beach remains closed because the overall geometric mean exceeds the department’s standard for state park beaches. Visitors to the park can still enjoy the park’s Public Beach #1, which is located in Kaiser. All other facilities at Lake of the Ozarks State Park are open and available to visitors.

The water at all designated beaches in the state park system is sampled weekly during the recreational season by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to determine suitability for swimming. Water quality can be determined to be unsuitable for swimming based on either the single sample taken earlier in the week, or by the geometric mean, which is a mathematical value that takes into consideration results from the current week plus the results taken during the previous weeks.

The sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located. Water samples are taken to check for E. coli, a common indicator species for bacteria.

Higher bacteria levels are often associated with heavy rains that result in runoff from adjacent lands. However, there are a number of possibilities that can contribute to higher bacteria, and chances are no single source is the cause.

Once tests indicate the bacteria levels are within the standard suitable for swimming, the beaches will reopen. Information about current status of beaches is available on the website at mostateparks.com. Signs indicating the status of the beaches are posted at the beaches as well.

The beach at Wakonda State Park is temporarily closed due to earlier storm debris. The public will be notified when the beach is reopened. Lewis and Clark State Park, including its beach, is closed because of high water. Most of the other facilities at these parks remain open and available to the public. A list of facility advisories is available at mostateparks.com.

Missouri's state parks and historic sites offer something to suit everyone's taste - outdoor adventure, great scenery and a bit of history. With Missouri’s 85 state parks and historic sites, the possibilities are boundless.

For more information about Missouri state parks and historic sites and swimming beaches, visit mostateparks.com.

     Floods Advance Toward Central Missouri........

The flooding along the Mississippi River is not only continuing in the northwestern portion of the state, but it is also advancing toward the central part of Missouri.  Additional flooding is occurring in the Atchison County town of Watson, as a levee that was breached a few weeks ago has incurred more damage, leading to more flooding.  Residents that had evacuated two weeks ago had begun to return, only to be told to leave again because of the latest breach........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

     Crews Reducing Admiral's Headroom........

Since the Mississippi River has for the most part been above flood stage since April 23, the defunct Admiral Riverboat has been stranded on the St. Louis Riverfront.  The Admiral has been scheduled to to be recycled at a facility in Alton. and in order to make the trip, the vessel will need a haircut as she is too tall to pass below an overhead deck at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26.  Workers are removing the top deck of the Admiral, which should garner an additional 10 feet of clearance........

Iowa Governor Suggests Lower Missouri River Group........

Recently, Terry Branstad, Governor of Iowa encouraged Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska to think about backing out of a Missouri River association because of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' management of the River, and the perceived favoritism of the upstream states.  Branstad suggested that Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska form their own alliance, since these states share a common interests in River management........

 US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River transfers command

MEMPHIS -- Capt. William M. Drelling relieved Capt. Michael S. Gardiner as commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River in an official change-of-command ceremony, Friday.

Capt. Gardiner assumed command of Sector Lower Mississippi River in June 2008, and will become the Chief of the Prevention divsion at the Thirteenth Coast Guard District in Seattle.

As sector commander, Gardiner served as Captain of the Port, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection and Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator. He was responsible for all Coast Guard missions conducted by 225 active duty and reserve members.

Capt. Drelling is coming from Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Ala., where he was the Deputy Commander since June 2009. He served as Deputy Director of the Coast Guard Force Readiness Command Implementation Team from August 2008 through June 2009. Drelling oversaw the facility and container inspection programs and led the responses to numerous oil spills and other pollution events.

Drelling, who is a native of California, earned his commission as a Coast Guard officer when he graduated from Officer Candidate School in December 1987. Drelling holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Irvine. He was awarded a master's degree in public policy and administration by California State University in 2001.

The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored tradition and deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. The event signifies a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability for the command.

CARBON MONOXIDE

Carbon monoxide (CO) can harm and even kill you inside or outside your boat!

Did you also know:

•CO symptoms are similar to seasickness or alcohol intoxicationω
•CO can affect you whether you're underway, moored, or anchoredω
•You cannot see, smell, or taste COω
•CO can make you sick in seconds. In high enough concentrations, even a few breaths can be fatalω
Most important of all, did you know carbon monoxide poisonings are preventableω Every boater should be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide - what it is; where it may accumulate; and the symptoms of CO poisoning. To protect yourself, your passengers, and those around you, learn all you can about CO.

The Science of Structures at the National Great Rivers Museum

ALTON, IL – Have you ever wondered how tall buildings stand up under their own weight? What about how bridges support the millions of cars and trucks that drive across them?
On Thursday, July 7, at 6:00, the National Great Rivers Museum will welcome presenters from the St. Louis Science Center who will explore the physics of structures by leading experiments and demonstrations.
A special sunset tour of the largest structure on the Mississippi River, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, will immediately follow the presentation. Space on the tour will be limited to the first 25 people to sign in.
This program is offered as part of the Flock to the Lock summer program series, presented by the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation. Meet at the National Great Rivers Museum on the select Thursdays of each summer month, now through September, to enjoy some quality time with the whole family!
The National Great Rivers Museum is located at 2 Lock and Dam Way, East Alton, IL 62024, just off Route 143, 2 miles east of the Clark Bridge. Call (618) 462-6979 for more information.

Wednesday afternoon, emergency responders from the Alton Fire Department rolled out for an emergency call at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam No.26.  Austin Bradburn was working aboard the Rhonda Lamulle towboat which had stopped in the Lock when he fell ill, appearing to be overheated, dehydrated, and had trouble breathing.  Bradburn was strapped to a backboard, and passed over the handrail on the Lock wall, where a stretcher was waiting.  He was then taken to the hospital for treatment........

     Supersize Sandbags Shore Up Levee.........

Farmers are scrambling to bolster a crumbling levee protecting several thousand acres of farmland in western Missouri.  They are using giant soybean bags filled with over 2,000 pounds of sand.  However, getting the sandbags into place was posing a problem, as the ground along the levee was too soft for heavy equipment.  The Missouri National Guard came to the rescue with their Black Hawk helicopters to drop the sandbags into place........

Missouri River Flood Editorials

Risk Reduction, Widening River Answer To Flood Control

The 2011 floods along the Missouri River indicate that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under Congressional direction needs to reduce the effects of flooding.  Several suggestions have been made as to what methods are best for achieving this goal.  First, widen the River, allowing it to flow outside it's channels in some rural areas.  Second, flood risks must be reduced, by not building bigger levees and developing lands in floodplains.  Third, navigation usage must be put into context, as barge traffic has steadily declined since 1977........

Pomme De Terre Lake

New tests find no zebra mussels

Boaters and anglers play critical roles in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species.

HERMITAGE Mo – Follow-up testing at Pomme de Terre Lake has given the southwest Missouri lake a clean bill of health regarding zebra mussels. State officials say the news emphasizes the important role boaters and anglers play in preventing the spread of these invasive mollusks.

Laboratory testing of water samples collected by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in spring 2009 detected the free-swimming, microscopic larval form of zebra mussels, called veligers, from three sample sites in the 7,820-acre lake.

In fall 2009 and again in 2010, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) collected additional water samples at Pomme de Terre Lake for testing. Zebra mussels were not detected.

Based on contradictory sampling results in 2009 and 2010, MDC and USACE cooperatively conducted independent sampling at Pomme de Terre Lake in June (2011). MDC and USACE samples were sent to separate laboratories for testing. Zebra mussels were not detected in any of the 2011 samples from either agency.

The 2009 finding prompted MDC and the COE, which owns the lake, to put up signs cautioning visitors to Pomme de Terre to clean boats and trailers before moving them from the lake to other waters. They extended the education campaign to the 56,000-acre Harry S. Truman Reservoir, another COE lake downstream from Pomme de Terre.

With Pomme de Terre now found free of zebra mussels, the agencies remind boaters and anglers of the importance of preventing the spread of invasive aquatic species.

Legislators Looking To Meet Corps About Levees........

Late last week, two Metro East congressmen and both of Illinois' U.S. Senators fired off a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requesting a meeting to discuss the plans for upgrading the levees along the Mississippi River.  The lawmakers are looking to guarantee that the correct moves are made in preparation for the upcoming levee repairs.  Back in May, the Southern Illinois Flood Prevention District unveiled a 5 year, $161 million plan to bring the Metro East levees up to 100 year flood protection status........

 Missouri's Roads and Waterways....

10 Traffic Deaths and No Boating Fatalities During July Fourth Weekend

There were no boating fatalities over the 2011 July Fourth weekend. However, troopers investigated ten boating crashes involving five injuries. One person drowned on Missouri waterways. Troopers also arrested 33 people for boating while intoxicated over the holiday weekend. During the 2010 July Fourth weekend, officers investigated 17 boating crashes, which included ten injuries and one fatality. Two people drowned and 40 people were arrested for boating while intoxicated during last years July Fourth weekend.

The drowning over the July Fourth holiday occurred on Saturday, July 2, 2011. Eugene Smith, 26, of Dyersburg, TN, drowned while attempting to swim across the Current River, one and one-half miles north of Van Buren, MO, in Carter County. Witnesses reported Smith appeared to struggle halfway across the river in a swift current. Smith went under and did not resurface. The victim's body was recovered in 15 feet of water by divers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Water Patrol Division. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Coroner Eric McSpadden.

News Release From BoatUS

It's "Buyer Beware" When Filling Up the Boat
- And a Lot of Other Things - at the Gas Station

Higher Ethanol Gasoline a Problem for Boat Motors, Small Engines

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 5, 2011 – Most recreational boats in the US are “trailer” boats. Stored in the backyard or driveway, they are trailered to the water and enjoyed for the day. They are also refueled at your local gas station or minimart, which may soon offer a fuel, E15 (or 15% ethanol), that is prohibited by the federal government for use in boat motors and violates engine manufacturer warranties. That has the nation’s largest recreational boat owners group, BoatUS, concerned over the potential for accidental misfueling.

Last week’s EPA’s debut of it’s proposed solution – a small, orange label affixed to the gas pump titled “Attention” – has only heightened the need for boaters to be vigilant, said the Alexandria, Virginia based association.

“As this new fuel starts appearing at the local fuel pump, we see the real likelihood of putting the wrong fuel in your boat,” said BoatUS Vice President of Government Affairs Margaret Podlich. “It could lead to costly engine or fuel system damage, and potentially leave you stranded out on the water with a disabled vessel, compromising your family’s safety. When a boat’s engine stops running, you can’t pull over to the side of the road,” added Podlich.

Earlier this year, the EPA authorized the use of E15 in 2001 model year and newer motor vehicles. However, the agency did not authorize its use in marine engines or a range of off-road vehicles, tools and equipment. Currently, most boaters in the US have transitioned to E10 (10% ethanol), the maximum percentage of ethanol permitted in gasoline before most engine manufacturer warranties are voided. However, many boaters still go out of their way to find ethanol-free fuel.

BoatUS believes it will be hard for consumers to recognize when or where E-15 is being rolled out to their local gas stations or fuel sellers. “Most likely consumers will encounter E-15 for the first time at their local gas station with little or no fanfare, and may be attracted to its price. This means we have to be alert now – it’s really a situation of buyer beware,” said Podlich.

The boater’s group also said the issue goes far beyond gas-powered boat engines. “I encourage anyone fueling – whether it’s for your boat, car, motorcycle, generator or six-gallon portable tank for your lawnmower or leaf-blower, to absolutely know what type of gas is going into that tank,” said Podlich. “Unless you have a 2001 or new motor vehicle, the gasoline-powered engines you own were not built for E15. Now is the time to start knowing which gas stations offer you safe fuel.”

 Missing Shark Found

Shark pillaged from the Gypsy Rose II on Saturday.

Witnesses say there were 2 scallywags spotted, one looking a lot like River Bill, and one resembling Karl the Terrible. After a few RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRs and some cannonball fire, the shark was promptly returned Sunday morning.

Formal wanted posters are currently being drafted for the 2 scallywags; Capt Tim reported to be offering a reward of a "a buck-n-ear".

Missouri River Flooding

Missouri Soldiers Pull River Duty During The Fourth........

For some of the Missouri National Guard soldiers in northwestern Missouri, the Fourth of July was another day on flood duty.  The soldiers had been on duty since the Missouri River began to inundate roads and homes in Andrew County.  They had been deployed to keep non-residents out of the area, and possibly damaging or stealing property.  Sgt. Aaron Auten stated that he and the other soldiers would have liked to have celebrated the Fourth with their families, they will just have to celebrate the Fourth extra hard next year........

Missouri River Flooding

Biggest Flood Threat Could Be Tributaries........

Several hundred tributaries of the swollen Missouri River are facing a good chance of flooding this year because the high River levels are not allowing the tributaries to drain.  The Missouri River is likely to remain high all summer, meaning that the tributary flood threat will be around as well.  In northwestern Missouri, the Nodaway River is so backed up where it meets the Missouri River, it is actually flowing backwards........

Update on the Crew of the Miss Rockaway Armada

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the nice letter! Hopefully we will meet again down the line!

For now, a bunch of us in the Armada are building a floating stage in Philadelphia.  We're not going to take it on a long river trip (not yet, anyway), but we're learning a lot about east coast waterways and meeting a lot of fine people.  I don't think there's any pictures up yet but there surely will be soon.  The big float, with performances and whatnot, is going to be on August 20.  If by some twist of reality you happen to be in the area, consider yourself invited!

Best,
jenny

 Boating Safety

     Illinois Focusing On Boating Safety........

Since summer has arrived, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is advising people of the hazards on the water.  Apparently, many boaters have not been educated on the rules of the waterways, many of which are similar to the rules on the roadway.  Vessels to the right, or approaching from the right have the right of way.  If a boat is approaching an oncoming vessel, the pilot is to veer right as well........

Mackinaw Island, Michigan

We made our way into Mackinaw Island, Michigan and anchored in the harbor. Upon reading Active Captain we knew it wouldn't be the best anchorage, but decided to try anyways. We had a great spot with good holding and good night sleep.

The island of course is full of horses and the kids loved everyone of them!

A great view of the Mackinaw Bridge which connects the lower state of Michigan to the upper peninsula. To the left a sailboat and next to that the typical ferry boat that runs all day long to the mainland. This is a great view from the park. As luck would have it we arrived on a very cold, rainy, windy day and opted not to bike around the island (which we have done many times in years past).

Exxon Oil Spill In Montana's Yellowstone River........

Late Friday, an ExxonMobil oil pipeline ruptured below the Yellowstone River riverbed, spewing an estimated 1,000 barrels or 42,000 gallons of oil near Billings, Montana.  As of Saturday, the oil slick measured in at about 25 miles.  The cause of the pipeline rupture is not known for sure, but it is believed that the flood conditions may have scoured the riverbed, exposing the 12 inch pipeline, allowing it to be struck by debris........

Missouri Waterways

Waterways Good For Floating, Boating....  Not So Much....

The smaller Rivers and waterways in and around Missouri have recovered well enough from the spring flooding to allow for canoeing and floating.  Unfortunately, the larger Rivers are still too engorged and teeming with debris to allow for boating, tubing or waterskiing.  Historically, the Fourth of July Weekend is one of the busiest along the Mississippi River, especially around Alton, Illinois where boaters come to watch the fireworks by water........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Alcohol and Water DON’T Mix When Boating Safety is Involved

Statistics compiled by the U.S. Coast Guard show the use of alcohol while boating was the leading contributor to on-the-water accidents…and the needless loss of 126 lives during 2010.

With the long Fourth of July weekend just ahead of us, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary encourages all boaters to “Boat Responsibly” and be sure you have a designated sober and qualified operator on board to ensure your boat gets back to the dock safely. In all, 605 deaths from boating accidents were recorded last year, with July being one of the most hazardous months for boaters.

During 2010, alcohol use was involved in 330 boating accidents and, in addition to contributing to the deaths of 126 boaters, resulted in injuries to 293 others.

Just as in driving a car, alcohol use while boating can lead to impairment of critical senses needed to avoid boating accidents. Slowed reaction time and diminished decision making ability can make your day on the water a less than enjoyable one. Additionally, alcohol can cause dehydration and illness when you are exposed to a hot, sunny day of boating.

“Boat responsibly” … and don’t mix alcohol with your day on the water. Save it until you return home.

And remember: Wear your Life Jacket every time, and ALL the time you’re on the water.

 Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois

Minor Flooding No Threat To Fireworks........

Even though the Mississippi River is six feet above flood stage in Alton, Illinois, it does not appear to be a problem for the Fourth of July weekend festivities.  The Mississippi River would have to rise another three feet before there would be issues with launching fireworks.  At this point, there are only a few closures of parking areas around Alton, including at the Lincoln Shields Recreational Area in West Alton.  The lot may be reopened if the River recedes by Saturday's fireworks show........

 Missouri River Bridges

      New Boone Bridge Span Approved.........

Late next year, work is expected to commence on a new eastbound span for the Daniel Boone Bridge taking highway 40 over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles Missouri.  The current eastbound span will be converted to westbound traffic duties, while the current westbound span will be closed.  Plans had originally called for reopening the unused span as a bike trail and service road connector, but the costs of upkeep make the proposal impractical........

Golden Eagle and Winfield Ferry

Thurs., June 30,2011

Both the Golden Eagle Ferry and Winfield Ferry will be open tomorrow morning, Friday, July 1,2011 at 5am.
We will operate 1 ferry at each location in the morning and at 11 am we will send out a new email stating wether or not we will operate one ferry at each location in the afternoon or move back to Golden Eagle with 2 ferrys (if roads are clear) for rush hour in the evening ( this would close Winfield by 1pm ).
We recommend that all cars and low vehicles cross the Winfield Ferry in the morning because there will probably still be water on the road at the Golden Eagle Ferry.

The river has crested and is starting to fall.

Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

Mississippi River Along The River Bend

Law Enforcement Looking For Impaired Boaters........

Over the Fourth of July weekend, law enforcement officials will be making their presence known as they will be out on the waterways looking for boaters operating their vessels under the influence.  Officials also wish to make boaters aware that safety is a high priority as well.  Captain Joe Morelock of the Illinois Conservation Police stated that he anticipates numerous weekend boaters in the area, and offers a word of caution in operating vessels in the swollen Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.  Morelock added that the high River levels tend to hide obstructions and floating debris........

Cuivre River State Park & Mark Twain Lake Swimming Beaches

Beaches Closed Temporarily Due To Bacteria........

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources stated that the recent heavy rains most likely contributed to excessive levels of bacteria detected at the swimming beaches at Cuivre River State Park.  The swimming beach at Mark Twain Lake was closed as well even though bacteria levels were below the single sample standard, but the average of the bacteria found in the water samples exceeds DNR standards for swimming beaches........

 Missouri Department of Natural Resources

     News Release

Swimming beaches at four state parks temporarily closed following heavy rainfall, bacteria levels

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 29, 2011 – Heavy rainfall earlier this week likely contributed to high bacteria levels confirmed at four state park swimming beaches, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Swimming beaches at Cuivre River and Finger Lakes state parks have been closed because the results of water samples taken Monday showed bacteria levels above the department’s standard for state park beaches.

Grand Glaize Beach at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, also known as Public Beach #2, remains closed because of elevated bacteria levels. Visitors to the park can still enjoy the park’s Public Beach #1, which is located in Kaiser. All other facilities at Lake of the Ozarks State Park are also open and available to visitors.

Even though the bacteria levels at Mark Twain State Park were well below the department’s single-sample standard for bacteria, the beach has been closed because the overall geometric mean exceeds the department’s standard for state park beaches.

The water at all designated beaches in the state park system is sampled weekly during the recreational season by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to determine suitability for swimming. Water quality can be determined to be unsuitable for swimming based on either the single sample taken earlier in the week, or by the geometric mean, which is a mathematical value that takes into consideration results from the current week plus previous weeks.

All of the parks affected by closings this week were in the path of thunderstorms Sunday and early Monday that dropped considerable rainfall.

Once tests indicate the bacteria levels are within the standard suitable for swimming, the beaches will reopen. Information about current status of beaches is available on the website at http://bit.ly/MoStateParksBeachStatus as well as mostateparks.com. Signs indicating the status of the beaches are posted at the beaches as well.

The beaches at Wakonda and Lake Wappapello state parks are temporarily closed due to earlier storm debris or flooding.

     Demolition Ongoing Aboard The Admiral........

Workers on the SS Admiral are tearing away at what was once the world's biggest inland entertainment vessel, and turning her into recyclable pieces.  So far, the demolition workers have made it to the second of the top two levels of the ship.  Workers have to be careful as the materials the vessel was constructed with are in layers, some of which are flammable.  There is approximately another month pf work om the Admiral, before she is ready to move to Alton, Illinois,. where the demolition will be completed........

Cheating charge filed against bass tourney entrant

KANSAS CITY Mo -- A Warsaw man faces a felony charge of attempt to steal by deceit for allegedly trying to weigh in fish at a bass tournament that he caught before the tournament began.

David R. Gann, 72, was entered in a family style bass tournament on Truman Lake on June 4 when the alleged violation occurred, said Mike Burton, a Protection District Supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

A few days prior, anglers looking for a place on the lake to set trot lines came across a rope tied to a wire box in the water that contained three largemouth bass. They notified conservation agents.

Burton, Conservation Agent Rob Farr, and Protection District Supervisor Dan Love used the information to locate the fish box. Inside they found one bass weighing more than five pounds, which had died due to stress, and two live bass topping two and three pounds respectively. The agents clipped fins on the live bass and took photos for later identification, Burton said.

On the day of the tournament, the agents watched the site. They saw Gann fishing in a boat by himself near the site, Burton said, and they watched him remove fish from the box. They saw him throw away the five-pound bass that was dead and put the other two bass in his boat’s live well..... click here to continue reading this news story.
