Golden Eagle Ferry & Winfield Ferry

Thurs., June 30,2011

Both the Golden Eagle Ferry and Winfield Ferry will be open tomorrow morning, Friday, July 1,2011 at 5am.
We will operate 1 ferry at each location in the morning and at 11 am we will send out a new email stating wether or not we will operate one ferry at each location in the afternoon or move back to Golden Eagle with 2 ferrys (if roads are clear) for rush hour in the evening ( this would close Winfield by 1pm ).
We recommend that all cars and low vehicles cross the Winfield Ferry in the morning because there will probably still be water on the road at the Golden Eagle Ferry.

The river has crested and is starting to fall.

Thank You,
The Calhoun Ferry Company

Water Patrol Division of Missouri Highway Patrol

Safety On The Water Key Ingredient For July 4th Holiday

Major Thomas E. Roam of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division encourages boaters to be extra vigilant with their water safety practices over the July Fourth holiday weekend. The Independence Day holiday is often the busiest single weekend on Missouri’s waters. Given the potential for high volumes of boating traffic it becomes even more important for boaters to keep a proper lookout and to the extent possible use the navigation rules on the water. Last year there were 17 boating crashes worked over the holiday weekend. There was one boating fatality and two drowning deaths over the weekend. There were 40 boating while intoxicated arrests across the state.

Being on the water after sunset poses additional issues boaters need to take into account. If you plan to be out after dark be sure to make sure your boat’s navigation lights are working and have extra bulbs on board. While there are fewer boat crashes after dark they tend to involve more serious injuries due to reduced reaction times and distances. Slow down and allow for extra room between other boats. Missouri’s night time speed limit on the water is 30 miles per hour. Viewing fireworks from the water can be unique experience but it is illegal to light fireworks from a boat so leave them at shore.

Flooding may affect holiday boating plans in certain areas of the state. The Mississippi and Missouri river have seen prolonged flooding this year. River closures on the Missouri River have been expanded. The river is closed up stream from mile mark 397 in Platte County Missouri. Stronger currents and debris can make boating in high water more dangerous. Most of Missouri’s lakes and smaller streams seem to be in favorable shape for water enthusiasts. With a favorable forecast, this Independence Day weekend should be a great chance to get out on the water. Boat smart and remember that safety starts before leaving the dock.

The (Fireworks) Show Must Go On........

Although the Mississippi River is flooding at Grafton, the fireworks planned for this weekend's Fourth of July celebration have been given the green light.  The fireworks show had been cancelled last year because of fears that the ground along the riverbank staging area was too soft to support the show.  This year, the River has not been as high, for as long.  This year, there will also be a privately funded show following Grafton's display........

FUNdraiser for one of our Boating Friends

We are putting together a “FUNdraiser” for one of our Boating Friends. Cindra Smith has been one of our favorite bartenders up at the river for many years. Her husband, Bruce, has been battling cancer for the past couple of years and the financial drain is starting to become a serious issue, not to mention the emotional aspects. We would like to have a “FUNdraiser” for them on Sunday, July 31st at Sharky’s. The emphasis on “FUN” is intentional, as Cindra has been a huge part of our boating FUN over the years. Here is a link to more information along with the announcement notice.

Hope to see all you there.

News Release From BoatUS

One Good "Sniff" May Save a Life
Six Safe Refueling Tips from Boat Owners Association of The United States

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 29, 2011 – It was the end to the Memorial Day weekend when a 32-foot motorboat with four persons aboard pulled up to the fuel dock. Moments later, after filling up, an explosion ripped through the boat – literally separating it into clamshell-like halves. In an instant a 25-year old woman was dead. All of the boat’s remaining four occupants as well as a fuel dock attendant were hospitalized.

Saddest of all, the accident may have been preventable. A newspaper reported that investigators found that the recently purchased used boat, which was being refueled by its new owner for the first time, may have had a fuel system gasket “give way,” or fail, which allowed gasoline fumes to escape and accumulate below decks. While the owner had properly turned the engine compartment blower on – a required procedure anytime a boat is refueled – not enough of the explosive fumes had been cleared before an engine backfire ignited the blast.

A simple sniff test may have prevented the tragedy, says Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). “While it appears the owner did the right thing by having the blower on to safely remove any fumes from the engine compartment area, he may not have performed the “sniff” test – lifting the engine compartment hatch in an attempt to smell any lingering gasoline fumes,” said Director of Damage Avoidance Bob Adriance. “Unlike a car, boats have fuel tanks and engines located in enclosed spaces which don’t allow gasoline vapors to escape. This accident shows how important it is do a sniff test every time a boat is refueled.”

BoatUS has these six refueling safety tips:

1. Always remove passengers from the boat, and reboard only after refueling is complete and the engine(s) restarted.
2. Engine should be turned off and do not operate any electrical switches, including the ignition.
3. Keep all doors, ports and hatches closed, and only open them when refueling is complete.
4. To prevent unintentional sparking, hold hose nozzle firmly against fuel fill (and not a rod holder, water tank fill or holding tank, which happens more often than you think). Also don’t overfill.
5. After refueling, ensure engine compartment blower runs for at least four minutes. This may delay others waiting to fill up, but it’s worth the wait.
6. A quick sniff test takes only a few seconds and is the most effective method for detecting fuel leaks. Always open the engine bay hatch (if boat is equipped) and smell the bilge area as well as any closed compartments or interior spaces.

For more information on safe refueling, check out the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water’s online boating safety course study guide at www.BoatUS.com/foundation/refuel.

  Missouri boaters:

If you own a boat, personal watercraft, etc. don't forget to check the year that your sticker expires. All stickers expire in the month of June. You can not rely on the state for the renewal notices and you do not need the notice to renew your sticker.

 US Army Corps of Engineers

Solicits Input on Operational Changes at the Kaskaskia River Project

Kaskaskia River Project— A significant reduction in Kaskaskia River Project’s budget will require changes to project operations. The project’s recommended Fiscal Year 2012 budget is $1,539,000, a reduction of $637,000, nearly 30 percent below the Fiscal Year 2011 budget. The Corps is soliciting input from stakeholders, customers, industry and the public on how to adjust operations while providing the best service to our customers.

Under Corps of Engineers budget criteria considerations, the Kaskaskia Navigation Project is considered a low use navigation project, meaning it is an inland waterway with under one billion ton miles of commercial cargo transported annually. In development of the fiscal year 2012, the Corps of Engineers reduced funding for all low use navigation projects, by 50 percent, a $76 million dollar reduction from Fiscal Year 2011. Funding was either eliminated or greatly reduced for 121 navigation projects across the nation.

According to the Kaskaskia Regional Port District, contracts are in place for navigational usage at the project to reach two million tons in fiscal year 2012. The recommended funding level at Kaskaskia is marginally survivable with the current usage, but may not keep the lock and channel operational if use increases as projected.

The Corps will make every effort to keep the lock open to navigational traffic. However to operate and maintain the project at the reduced funding levels will require significant changes to current operations. Changes being considered include reduced hours of lock operation, remote operation of the dam and/or lock, and limited dredging and maintenance to facilities. Other project features that may be reduced or eliminated include: monitoring of project feature conditions such as stilling basin inspections, water safety efforts, recreational lockage, fish and wildlife habitat maintenance, and operation of recreation facilities including campgrounds, boat ramps, and visitor center.

The Corps of Engineers is seeking feedback concerning these potential operational changes. Comments should be sent no later than July 15th, 2011 to:

Rivers Update-June 27, 2011

The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 17.6 feet as of 6:00 a.m.

The Missouri River at St. Charles, MO is at 25.2 feet.

With recent rain events at Carlyle Lake, 24-hour operations have begun. Corps officials are performing daily foot surveillance on the main dam, Saddle Dam 2 and the Keyesport Levee. Recreation at Carlyle has been impacted; to ensure public safety, all reservations in impacted areas will be canceled through July 10th. Beaches will also be closed, and all boat ramps except for 3 high water boat ramps will be closed.

The five day forecast is clear over the next three days with some precipitation moving in Saturday night in the St. Louis District area. We will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/floodfight

No Contamination At Wappapello Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake has recently learned of misinformation regarding E. coli contamination at Wappapello Lake. “Our waters are fine” stated the Operations Manager Cindy Jackson. “We tested the water to ensure its quality before opening any of our beaches.”

The water at Wappapello Lake is tested regularly regarding its quality, as the safety of our visitors is of utmost importance. Rumors spread like wildfire this past weekend that Wappapello Lake was contaminated; which is simply not true.

Should you have any questions, individuals are encouraged to call the Wappapello Lake Management office at (573) 222-8562 to get answers to their questions. Your safety is our concern, a mandate we do not take lightly. We invite everyone to celebrate Independence Day activities at Wappapello Lake on July 2 which includes Waterfest, magic shows and fireworks. Remember safety this holiday weekend, so buckle up. Life jackets and seat belts save lives

The story of RiverBills.com RiverWebCam installation!

What should have been a simple matter of mounting the camera, running some cable and plugging everything in turned into a bit of an adventure for Mikey D. and Captain Weil. Seems with all the high water some of our wildlife has relocated much as many of our river friends have had to. As we neared the end of 200 feet of cable installation all that remained was to drill a hole, run it into the house and we're done. While holding the 12 foot ladder and handing tools to Mikey D. at the top of the ladder so he could remove the under panel to the floor of the house I heard a scream and here comes Mikey D. airborne off the top of the ladder and onto the concrete! As I went to check him, assuming he had fallen, he began hollering "SNAKE, SNAKE, SNAKE!" Behind You! As I turned around, sure enough, I was staring straight into the not so happy eyes of about a 3 - 1/2 foot long snake!  At this point we are pretty sure it is a Copper Headed Rattle Moccasin! Seems the snake had taken up residence on top of the very panel Mikey D. was removing. After dispatching the snake and sending him downriver Mikey D. said something about River Bill owing him some new underwear and a strong shot.

The rest of the installation went smoothly and a message was sent to River Bill about the camera being up and running and the additional cost of a three pack of underwear and a few shots of something strong!

Mississippi River At The Birds Point Levee

Bone Fragments Unearthed During Levee Breach........

Missouri natural resource specialists and state archaeologists are identify what appears to be ancient bone fragments that were unearthed when the Birds Point Levee was breached to ease flooding along the Mississippi River, near the confluence with the Ohio River.  It is possible that the discovery could delay the reconstruction of the levee.  It is believed that the bones are very old, as they are dark in color.  Since there was no cemetery in the area, it is likely the fragments are from early homesteaders or possible Native American burial mounds........

 Clean Water Act

      Draft Guidance Comment Period Extended........

Over the past decade, interpretations of Supreme Court rulings have removed federal protection of some waterways, confusing which waters and wetlands are protected under the Clean Water Act.  As a result, the U.S. EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have put together draft guidance to determine if a waterway or wetland is protected under the Clean Water Act.  The original public comment period has been extended through July 31........

Rivers Update-June 27, 2011

The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 15.9 feet as of 6:00 a.m.

The Missouri River at St. Charles, MO is just below flood stage at 24.2 feet.

With recent rain events at Carlyle Lake, 24-hour operations have begun. Corps officials are performing daily foot surveillance on the main dam, Saddle Dam 2 and the Keyesport Levee. Recreation at Carlyle has been impacted; to ensure public safety, all reservations in Dam West, Coles Creek and Boulder campgrounds are closed, and McNair, Dam East and Eldon Hazlet State Park campgrounds remain open. Beaches will also be closed, and all boat ramps except for 3 high water boat ramps will be closed.

Kaskaskia Lock & Dam on the Kaskaskia River in IL is now OPEN.

Our engineers are providing technical assistance in Scott County, IL, where the local levee district has begun placing material as interim closure in the three breaches that happened Sunday.

The five day forecast calls for 1" of additional rain over the St. Louis District area today, with very little rain forecasted for the next four days. We will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/floodfight

 Lake Carlyle

River Flooding Negligible, Lakes Are Another Story........

The heavy rainfall over the weekend has not significantly swelled Illinois rivers, and officials are speculating that the runoff should pass through the system rather quickly.  Mike Petersen, spokesman for the St. Louis District of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers stated that the most evident problem area will be at Carlyle Lake.  So far, 345 campsites at Lake Carlyle have been closed, as have beaches and most boat ramps........

News Release

EMPHASIS: Results Of Weekend Enforcement Efforts On Missouri's Waterways For "Operation Dry Water"

Major Thomas E. Roam, director of the Water Patrol Division for the Missouri State Highway Patrol announces the results of enforcement efforts to detect impaired boat operators in conjunction with the national Operation Dry Water campaign. This is the third year for the national effort to reduce impaired vessel operation by highlighting enforcement efforts. Troopers conducted two special operations over the weekend.

A vessel sobriety checkpoint was conducted at the four mile mark of the Grand Glaize arm of Lake of the Ozarks Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 103 vessels were checked during the operation. Seven arrests for boating while intoxicated were made while 16 warnings were issued for other safety violations.

A vessel sobriety checkpoint was conducted on Table Rock Lake near point 7 at the Highway 13 Bridge. The checkpoint ran Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 71 boats were stopped during the checkpoint and three boating while intoxicated arrests were made. There were 27 warnings and two citations issued for other safety violations.

Including the two special operations, there was a total of 20 boating while intoxicated arrests statewide during the 2011 Operation Dry Water weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in your boating experience

    CLEAN WATER is under attack!!!

Posted by Birk on June 27th, 2011

Please check out H.R.2018. Get the facts. Please call your Congressman and Senators and tell them to stop this assault on The Clean Water Act…President Nixon-era legislation that “turns 40″ next year.

This bill a real STINKER!! It fragments authority to enforce 40-year old standards and takes the teeth out of Federal law enforcement powers which are needed BECAUSE rivers and lakes flow into each other across state, municipal and even international borders.

As you all know…I am NOT a BIG Government guy…but, this new bill H.R. 2018 is a GIANT STEP BACKWARD for CLEAN WATER.

The St. Louis Confluence Riverkeeper 501(c)3 needs your support to continue regular water testing and independent lab reporting on the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers at the St. Louis Confluence.

Please consider becoming a River Lover and sign up on-line today!

Missouri River Flooding

Potential Flooding For Weeks To Come........

Monday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said that Missouri will have several weeks of possible flooding as high water from the Missouri River and it's tributaries moves across the state.  The good news is that the Missouri's high water levels could lessen by the time it reaches Kansas City and moves east toward St. Louis.  Flooding has been a worry for several weeks after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers increased the releases from the reservoirs upstream........

News Release From BoatUS

Recreational Boating Traffic Expected to Peak This Weekend:
Getting Safely Home After the Fireworks

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 27, 2011 – It’s not a Thanksgiving holiday traffic jam. However, for America’s boaters, it may as well be. Boat Owners Association of The United States says the July 4th holiday is expected to bring record numbers of boaters to the water, jamming lakes, rivers and bays with thousands of revelers celebrating America’s birthday at evening fireworks displays. With nightfall, it also means a heightened awareness with boating safety.

The 24-hour BoatUS on-the-water dispatch centers and TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist towing fleets are expected to receive a total of nearly 3,000 requests for assistance from boaters during the holiday weekend, with a big spike likely to occur each evening - timed with conclusion of waterfront fireworks shows as boats pull anchor en masse and head home. While this number is down from previous years due to economic conditions, it still means a lot of boaters will need jump starts, tows home or ungrounding help.

“For many, this will be the only time of year they operate their boat in the dark,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water President Chris Edmonston. “As you’re about to pull the hook to leave after fireworks show ends, boaters should understand that the risk of having an accident significantly increases after the sun goes down.”

Boating at night requires a heightened awareness of the unique hazards a boat may encounter. Obstructions from something as simple as a buoy or even a floating log, to unlighted piers or sandbars, are much more difficult to see. Always post an extra crewmate or guest as a secondary lookout.

Vessel navigation lights are designed to not only help others understand a boat’s direction of travel or how fast it is going, but also to help determine what type of vessel it is and what activity it is doing, such as towing a barge. However, it may take a while to get a clear picture of these factors, so be especially vigilant in your approach until you are certain of their intentions. This is why it’s so important to ensure your own navigation lights are in proper working order as well.

“The best things you can do to ensure a safe cruise at night are to ensure you have a good lookout, operate at a speed that allows you to react appropriately, have your life jacket on or readily available, and leave the alcohol ashore - it is a leading contributor to accidents after dark,” added Edmonston.

Mark Twain Lake

Lake Visitor Center Open Late For Fireworks........

On July 3, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake will keep the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center and the surrounding balcony until 10 pm for viewing the fireworks.  Fireworks will start at around dusk, and the first 100 visitors will receive a mini American flag........

News Release

Coast Guard Closes Portion of Missouri River

ST. LOUIS -- The U.S. Coast Guard extended the closure on the Missouri River an additional 11 miles, Friday.
The Missouri River closure is closed to all vessel traffic from mile marker 386, downstream of Leavenworth, Kan., to mile marker 811, near Gavin's Point Dam in Yankton, S.D. Mile marker 386 is about one-half mile downstream of the Archer Daniel Midland/Growmark grain elevator facility located on the Kansas side of the river.

The closure is a result of consultations with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the governors of Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.

The Big Sioux River closure is still in effect for all vessel traffic and is between the Missouri River confluence and the Military Road Bridge in north Sioux City, S.D., due to high water.

The Coast Guard urges mariners to monitor VHF-FM channels 16 and 22 for any changes to the closure.

Souris River Near Minot, North Dakota

Record Crest For The Souris River........

Over the weekend, the Souris River in North Dakota crested at just over 1,561.7 feet above sea level.  This is four feet above the record level reached in 1881, but about a foot and a half lower than was originally predicted.  About 4,000 homes were inundated by the floodwaters.  The level of the Souris is expected to fall close to 2 feet by the middle of the week........

The Pictures of the Day ...... were sent to us by D Pieper who hails out of My River Home in the boat.... PMAN.

Check this out Bill!!

On a late evening drift home to Portage, an extra friendly hen swam up to the boat and climbed aboard. The critter walked right up Mikes leg and on to his shoulder. Funny stuff! Theresa was next, "STELLA" ( as Mike named her) made it right up to T's "nest" and kissed her. Stella stayed with us all night, (outlasted Mike).

Stella left in the morning to spread more cheer, have everyone watch for her on the river!

Keep up the good work Bill,

Rivers Update-June 26, 2011
The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 15.3 feet as of 8:34 a.m.

The Missouri River at St. Charles, MO is just below flood stage at 24.2 feet.

Kaskaskia Lock & Dam on the Kaskaskia River in IL remains closed as a result of high water. It is anticipated to remain closed for most of the week as the crest moves forward.

Our engineers are providing technical assistance in Scott County, IL, where the local levee district has begun placing material as interim closure in the three breaches that happened Sunday.

The 5-day forecast calls for 1-1.5" of additional rain over the St. Louis District area the next 5 days, with a chance for thunderstorms through Monday. All river stages in the St. Louis District have crested. We will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service.      Checking on the River Levels

Hey Bill,

What's up with the river? Haven't see you guys in awhile. How ya been? Carol and I moved to Florida last march and are returning for a couple 3 weeks to gather our remaining (junk).

I currently have the sea level under control at a pleasant level for boating and swimming recreational purposes, as i look at the news and your website, it is evident you and all the river rats have been slacking, perhaps PARTYING TOO MUCH too maintain safe and enjoyable water levels.

Carol and I are on our way to lend assistance on this matter. First and foremost as this situation seems to be worsening, keep the beer high and dry and cold. I am holding YOU fully responsible RIVER BILL if this situation is not resolved by the time we get there !

Hope all is well

Flood Berm Fails At Nuclear Plant........

A flood berm that was restraining the Missouri River from the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Station failed early Sunday morning.  Officials stated that they were keeping tabs on the situation, but there is nothing to worry about.   The plant had shut down in April for refueling.  The berm was not crucial in the protection of the plant, however crews will look into whether the berm can be patched.  The plant is set to be restarted after the floodwaters recede........

Thursday night, the National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning after a levee near Brownville, Nebraska failed.  The affected area is mostly rural, however, the flooding could affect Langdon, Phelps City, and Watson, Missouri.  Officials forecast that the Missouri River will remain high through August, so more levee issues are likely.  U.S. Senator Roy Blunt will be discussing the management of the Missouri River, recommending flood control be put at the top of the priority list........

Georgian Bay and North Channel

The Georgian Bay was the most scenic part of the entire Great Loop experience. We were enamored with the constant breathless scenery that lasted for miles for miles.

They call this the 30,000 Island Region for a reason. Come to find out there's actually criteria for determining what can be included and counted as an island.....circumference and ability to stay above water for 365 days are just some determining factors.
We opted for one of a million different anchorages and chose this one which was near a Parks Canada island. This way we could play on the island and explore the many shapes, colors and sizes of surrounding rocks.

The Pictures of the Day ...... were sent to us by Mark Cutler of the boat Cutty's Ark

Hello Bill,

While rounding out of Bolter Chute last night for a leisurely cruise and float, the crew of Cutty's Ark spotted a solitary canoe in the main channel. We shut the boat down and hailed the two young men in the canoe. Alex and Cliff, are canoeing from the Mississippi headwaters to NOLA as an adventure and a fundraising effort. They are raising money for the Friends of the Fishermen Fund. It's goal is to help gulf coast fishermen who have been impacted by the massive oil spill there last summer. Their website is: http://www.arsts.org

I have attached some pictures taken last night. Note that they have rigged outriggers on their canoe for stability. The canoe was purchased from Craigslist back home in Michigan. They are Michigan State alums and have the logo painted on their boat. Yesterday was the 34th day of their adventure. They are camping along the way, and have met many interesting people.

We fed them, slaked their thirst, and saw them pull into Grafton Marina last night.

The first pic is of them as they were leaving us last night. The next two pics are of Cliff and Alex a little closer up (along with part of our crew). The final pic is of the young men on the front of Cutty's Ark. Cliff is taking a picture of the beautiful Mississippi sunset. River cat "Tito" is surveying the scene.

Just another story from the Mississippi, you can't hear her talk if you're not out there.....

EMPHASIS: Missouri River Closed to Boating Traffic Due to Flooding Concerns

Colonel Ronald K. Replogle, superintendent, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol announces that the state of Missouri will issue closures to recreational boating traffic on the Missouri River in the areas most affected by high flood water. The Highway Patrol plans to issue coordinated river closures in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard as the flood waters move through Missouri. Currently, the Missouri River is closed to all vessel traffic in the state of Missouri from river mile 450 near St. Joseph, Missouri, to the Iowa state line. The Missouri State Highway Patrol will work closely with the United States Coast Guard to manage the river closures.

For more information on a complete list of United States Coast Guard river closures and advisories, recreational boaters are encouraged to monitor marine band channel 16 or 22A for broadcast notices to mariners for updates to operating restrictions. Also the public may view notices on the following website:

River Update - June 24, 2011
The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 17.1 feet as of 7:30 a.m, and has crested.

Louis District area the next 5 days, with a chance for thunderstorms tonight through Monday. All river stages in the St. Louis District have crested. We will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/floodfight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Public safety remains the Corps top priority. We ask everyone to stay informed of current conditions and remember there is always risk inherent with flooding. Visit our Flood Fight web page for additional information and resources, http://bit.ly/floodfight

Current conditions and National Weather Service forecasts indicate only minor flooding is expected in the St. Louis area. However, there is always risk associated with flooding, and there is a potential for higher water if above normal rain falls in the watershed.

Based on current forecasts, there is no immediate threat of levees overtopping on the Missouri or Mississippi Rivers. A range of possibilities have been looked at based on average rain falling in the Missouri River Basin.

We are tracking this event and will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service.

The St Louis District will continue to provide updated information to our partners so that levee districts, emergency managers, local and state officials, residents and businesses can make informed decisions..... click here for latest information

Missouri River At St. Charles, Missouri

    Flood Waters Won't Affect Riverfest........

Despite rumors to the contrary, St. Charles' Main Street is not flooded, and it is in fact open for business.  Riverfest will also go on as planned in Frontier Park.  As of Thursday, the Missouri River was below flood stage at 24.31 feet.  River levels would have to be more than 31 feet to inundate the park.  Over the Fourth of July weekend, carnival rides will be set up on the south side of Frontier Park, bands will be performing on the Jaycee Stage, and of course there will be fireworks........

Flooding temporarily closes Lewis and Clark State Park

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 24, 2011 Lewis and Clark State Park near Rushville in Buchanan County has been closed temporarily because of flooding from rising water levels from the Missouri River. Missouri State Park officials closed the park today and will continue to evaluate the situation to determine when the park can reopen.

"We have been watching the water levels and monitoring forecasts to determine if and when water will affect Lewis and Clark State Park," said Bill Bryan, Missouri State Parks director, a division of the Department of Natural Resources. "Because of rising water levels in Lewis and Clark Lake, we decided to close the park immediately."

Although the park had been open for use, staff has been preparing for possible flooding such as removing equipment and other items. Campers have been relocated to Weston Bend State Park and campers with reservations had already been notified that flooding was likely. Because of its location on an oxbow lake near the Missouri River, Lewis and Clark State Park has experienced flooding in the past and has plans in place for how to deal with flooding situations. Staff will continue to monitor the situation and reopen the park when it is safe for visitors to return.

Although Lewis and Clark State Park is temporarily closed, there are other state parks in northwest Missouri that are open for campers and other visitors. These include Wallace State Park near Cameron, Weston Bend State Park near Weston and Watkins Mill State Park and State Historic Site near Lawson. For information about these state parks, visit mostateparks.com.

To check the status of Lewis and Clark State Park or for more information about Missouri state parks, go to mostateparks.comor call the Department of Natural Resources toll free at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (TDD).

Department extends waivers to aid continued cleanup efforts from flooding in southern Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 23, 2011 Following Governor Jay Nixons extension of the declaration of emergency, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is extending its waiver of specific solid waste and air pollution regulations related to cleanup of communities affected by the May flooding in 19 southern Missouri counties.

The extended waiver shall be in effect until Sept. 15 unless otherwise amended by subsequent notice. Like the original waivers, the extension applies to Barry, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Howell, McDonald, Mississippi, New Madrid, Ozark, Pemiscot, Reynolds, Ripley, St. Francois, Scott, Stoddard, Stone, Taney and Wayne counties.

The extended waivers will continue to allow vegetative waste, such as brush and yard waste, which normally is excluded from permitted sanitary landfills, to be taken to such landfills if the landfill agrees to accept the waste. The department is encouraging residents to recycle appliances damaged in the storm, but in cases where it is impractical to separate the appliances from other storm debris, the department is also allowing these items to be taken to a landfill. Again, the landfill must be willing to accept the appliances.

The department is encouraging cities and counties to coordinate collection of damaged appliances so refrigerants can be legally recovered from air conditioners, freezers and refrigerators before recycling.

The department continues to strongly encourage, but not require, composting of vegetative waste where practical. The waiver applies only to yard waste and does not allow disposal of other items normally prohibited in sanitary or demolition landfills.

The waiver also allows for the burning of vegetative waste resulting from the storms as long as it is burned on the property where it originated. Community burn sites located within the corporate limits of any municipality must receive a permit from the department.

The burning of vegetative waste from the storms must be done at least 200 yards from the nearest occupied structure and be approved by local fire officials. The department is asking community officials to consider the 200-yard buffer as a minimum and to carefully select burn locations, taking local air quality, public health and safety, and other effects on neighborhoods into consideration.

The original waivers and the extension, along with fact sheets on proper disposal of storm debris and other related information, can be found on the departments website: dnr.mo.gov/disaster.htm.

Residents or businesses involved in storm debris cleanup should call the Department of Natural Resources Southeast Regional Office at 573-840-9750 or the Southwest Regional Office at 417-891-4300 for additional information or clarification of the waiver.

The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 18.2 feet as of 6:00 a.m, and has crested and is expected to fall more within the next three days.

The Missouri River at St. Charles, MO is just below flood stage at 24.5 feet and has crested. It is expected to fall about a foot over the next three days.

The 5-day forecast calls for 1" of additional rain over MVS the next 5 days, with a chance for thunderstorms Friday night through Monday.

The St Louis District will continue to provide updated information to our partners so that levee districts, emergency managers, local and state officials, residents and businesses can make informed decisions.... click here for latest information

Corps Says Flood Protection Is Adequate........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stated that no major flooding is anticipated along the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area over the next few days, as long as rainfall sticks to forecasted levels.  The high River levels will remain, however.  The Corps also stated that they are confident that the local locks, dams, levees and natural impoundment flood plains are adequate for handling the current flood predictions........

This weekend, the Missouri State Water Patrol will likely be conducting sobriety checkpoints at the Lake of the Ozarks.  For good reason, the Water Patrol has not released information about where or when the checkpoints could occur.  The checkpoints are part of the nationwide campaign known as Operation Dry Water.  Likely locations include the Bay of the Gravois Arm, the main channel at Lynch Cove, Toad Cove, and of course the Party Cove........

Missouri Department of Conservation....

Two anglers score hits on open fishing records

JEFFERSON CITY–Two Missourians succeeded in quests for state fishing records. One says he aspires to a higher calling.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently certified a gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) gigged by Hayden Crouch, Bradleyville, as the first state record for that species. Crouch, 12, was gigging with his family on Beaver Creek in Taney County on Jan. 15 when he stuck the 15-inch gizzard shad. It weighed 1.5 pounds. According to The Fishes of Missouri, the Show-Me State’s definitive text on the finned tribe, most gizzard shad weigh less than a pound.

Gizzard shad live in big, constantly moving schools in most of the state’s lakes and principal streams. This member of the herring family is one of Missouri’s most prolific fish. Their soft, flavorless flesh makes them more desirable as cut bait than as food. However, Crouch and his family had other reasons for wanting to catch a big gizzard shad. The species was on their list of fish for which they might reasonably hope to set a state record.

MDC keeps two sets of fishing records. One is for fish caught on a hand-held pole and line. The other category is for “alternative methods,” including gigging. The Crouches knew the alternative-methods record for gizzard shad was “open.” No one had ever bothered to apply for it. All the Crouches had to do was gig one and enter it for a guaranteed record. Hayden edged out other family members by gigging the biggest gizzard shad that night.

Derek S. DePew, of DeSoto, had the same plan when he entered a bowfishing tournament on the Meramec River May 21. He made a list of fish he might encounter during the outing and weights of current alternative-methods records for those species. He noted that the record for the highfin carpsucker (Carpiodes velifer) was open.

The Fishes of Missouri describes the highfin carpsucker as rare, with known populations only in the Meramec, Gasconade, Osage and White river systems. One distinguishing feature is the extremely long filament on the front of the dorsal fin.

DePew had done his homework, but he needed something more to land his record fish – lightning reflexes. A big highfin carpsucker was among dozens of fish that began leaping wildly around his boat when he cruised into a shallow spot on the river. Seeing the long filament on the fish’s dorsal fin, DePew recognized immediately what it might be and loosed his arrow, piercing the fish in midair.

Since the alternative-methods record for the species was open, DePew got an automatic record when Conservation Agent Chris Boyd verified the fish’s species. DePew set the bar high for future records. His fish weighed 1 pound, 6 ounces and was 15 inches long. According to The Fishes of Missouri, highfin carpsuckers seldom grow larger than a pound or longer than 12 inches.

Highfin carpsuckers prefer clearer, cleaner streams than their close and much more widely distributed relatives, the river carpsucker (Carpiodes carpio) and the quillback (Carpiodes cyprinus). Like the gizzard shad, the highfin carpsucker is known for jumping out of the water.... click here to continue reading this news article

Summary of River/Flood Update from Col O’Hara

This is a summary of this morning's press conference at Lock and Dam 27, where Col O'Hara provided an update on the River and Flood in the St. Louis District.

Due to flash flooding on the Mauvaise Terre Creek, a tributary of the IL River, the Scott County Levee was overtopped last Sunday. Our Engineers will continue working with partners and local officials. -Col. O

River Conditions: Much of the MO River is hovering at flood stage or below. We expect the MO River to fall and then rise slightly due to releases. We will see continual rise due to releases until the end of June. -Col. O

With recent rains, we expect to see a slight increase in the Upper Miss followed by a harder fall, cresting through the St. Louis region over the next couple of days with no issues expected. -Col. O

Kaskaskia Lock & Dam is still closed due to high water. Without additional rainfall, Carlyle Lake is projected to crest Thursday at 453.5 ft., 8.5 feet above the normal summer rule curve. -Col. O

Only minor flooding is expected in St. Louis District area. –Col. O

We are still in the recovery phase at Wappapello Lake following the overflow of the Spillway on May 2. We expect all of the campgrounds to be open by 4th of July. -Col. O

Public Safety remains our top priority; Corps will continue to track the conditions and will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. - Col. O

River Update - June 22, 2011
The Upper Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO is at 18.3 feet as of 6:00 a.m. It is expected to crest tomorrow at 18.8 feet.

The Missouri River at St. Charles, MO is just below flood stage at 24.9 feet and has crested. It is expected to fall about a foot over the next three days.

The 5-day forecast calls for 1" of additional rain over MVS the next 5 days.

The St Louis District will continue to provide updated information to our partners so that levee districts, emergency managers, local and state officials, residents and businesses can make informed decisions.

Bullfrogs and green frogs up for grabs June 30

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Bullfrogs and green frogs are up for grabs beginning at sunset on June 30 as Missouri enters its annual frogging season.

A favorite outdoor pastime of many Missourians, frogging spans the gap between hunting and fishing. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) allows harvest of frogs by hand net, gig, trotline, throw line, limb line, bank line, jug line, snagging, snaring, grabbing or pole and line with a fishing permit. With a hunting permit, frogs can be harvested using .22-caliber firearms, pellet guns, atlatls, longbows and crossbows. The use of an artificial light is permitted when frogging. Children under the age of 16 and adults over 65 are not required to have a permit.

The daily limit is an eight-frog total of both species, with a possession limit of 16. If you catch eight before midnight, you can start frogging again at 12:01 a.m. and catch another day’s limit. To do this legally, the first eight frogs must be kept separate from the second set.

Once a frog is speared, it must be harvested. You should not release an injured frog, as the animal is not likely to recover. However, a frog is not fatally injured by methods such as grabbing or pole and line and thus may be released.

Frog legs have a mild flavor similar to that of fish. They can be battered and fried or sautéed in butter with garlic or herbs. They also make a good base for Cajun dishes that call for fish or shellfish. To top off your frogging experience, try this basic frying recipe:

Fried Frog Legs

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 cup crushed saltine crackers
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon season salt
1 tablespoon lemon pepper salt
2 eggs
1 cup milk
2 quarts peanut oil

Instructions:

Thaw a possession limit of frog legs (16 pairs), drain and pat dry with paper towels. Heat oil to 375 degrees. Combine dry ingredients in a large plastic bowl with lid. Dip legs into milk and egg mixture, then drop into bowl with dry ingredients. Cover bowl and shake. Drop legs in hot oil and cook until golden brown.

  Missouri boaters:

If you own a boat, personal watercraft, etc. don't forget to check the year that your sticker expires. All stickers expire in the month of June. You can not rely on the state for the renewal notices and you do not need the notice to renew your sticker.

I sure did! Actually myself and my sons, Eric and Ryan went fishing on Fathers Day, on the Missouri River. Caught 12 Bluecat ranging is size from #12 to #94!

The two largest fish were returned to the river and the others will make a good fish fry! The other large fish was a #63.
