YesterYear's Pictures of the Day in 2008 ........ were from Val Aulabaugh who hails out of Grafton Harbor in the boat......"Last Call"

Bill,

Just a few pictures I found interesting today--Elsah, the intersection of Route 3 and Route 100 in Grafton, the Loading Dock, a barge at the level of the river road and a boater that I am assuming was moving to Alton Marina. Hope everyone stays safe during this high water.

Pray for the river to recede soon.

 Missouri River Flooding

Levees Breached, Overtopped In Northern Missouri........

Over the weekend, water began overtopping levees in the Missouri counties of Holt and Atchison.  Some of the water has been attributed to recent storms.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that after the Big Lake breach in Holt county, the Missouri River had dropped about a foot, but the level was rising again Sunday afternoon.  The good news is that the majority of the residents evacuated prior to the floods........

Sad News

Past Commodore (2009) Denny Galkowski passed away

From the Con Trios Yacht Club website,
Very Sad News to report:

Past Commodore (2009) Denny Galkowski passed away following complications from surgery after he had suffered a stroke.

Denny was my mentor and Commodore my year as Fleet Captain and I could not have done it without his help and input. He was a very strong supporter of both the Con Trios Yacht Club and the Blessing of the Fleet, having served as a Board Member on both organizations.

Denny was a Paramedic with the St. Charles County Ambulance District. He was an accomplished boater along with his lovely wife Pat in the cruiser "2XS" out of Polestar Marina. Denny will be sorely missed by all of us.

Our Condolences, Prayers and Love go out to Pat and their family at this sad time.

Arrangements for Past Commodore Denny Galkowski:
There will be a Memorial Mass at Immmaculate Conception Church, 110
Maryknoll Drive, Old Monroe, MO. on Monday 20th June, at 10:00 AM. No other
arrangements are planned.

Mississippi River Near The Birds Point Levee

Pinhook, Missouri Doomed By Levee Breach........

A tiny, predominately African American community appears to have been doomed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' decision to breach the Bird's Point Levee in southeastern Missouri.  During the '60s, the community had a population of more than 250 residents.  Prior to the levee breach, the town only had about 30 residents who evacuated when the plan for the levee breach was announced.  The residents have requested that the government fund the relocation of the community........

Missouri River Flooding

Corps Officials Arriving At Congress' Request........

Recently, the congressional delegation of Missouri penned a letter outlining their constituents beliefs that the Missouri River flooding could have been prevented by better planning by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The Corps are releasing water from the upstream reservoirs, and acknowledge that they are failing to keep up in spite of the releases.  The Commander of the Corps Northwest Division, Brig. Gen. John McMahon will be in Jefferson City on Monday to address concerns about the flooding........

Bill,

I'd just like to give a friendly reminder to our Missouri River boaters: If you own a boat, personal watercraft, etc. don't forget to check the year that your sticker expires. All stickers expire in the month of June. You can not rely on the state for the renewal notices and you do not need the notice to renew your sticker.

Thanks!

Destinations Along The Mississippi River

Quad Cities Are Full Of Surprises........

Like St. Louis, the Quad cities were built around the Mississippi River.  But until the lock and dam system was constructed during the 1930's, the River in that area was full of dangerous rapids, requiring specialized pilots to traverse the region.  Industry that built up the city over time has given way to parks and trails as well as art. Historical Arsenal Island once served as an arsenal, it now contains the Rock Island Arsenal Museum, among other attractions.  The region also offers craft breweries.........

Locks and more locks!

Happy Fathers Day! We just realized yesterday that yet another holiday had sneaked up on us. It's hard to remember the day, let alone the date these days.

There are 45 locks in the Trent Severn Canal and add that to the 31 we just did in the Erie Canal and it makes for eventful days. This is the Peterborough lift lock and is world's tallest lift lock! It actually lifts you into air while you're still in the water!

Once we pulled up and secured our lines the gate behind us rose and off we went

To  think we would actually be at the top in a matter of minutes?

It was very impressive and fun to ride. The view was amazing!

Very efficient and we were done within 15 minutes of arriving!  My mom said I was here with her and my dad when I was 16, but I guess it was a bit more memorable in my own boat as I don't recall it.

HOVERCRAFT ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

There are many boats on the river that can take the wakes pretty good. However, a hovercraft seems to glide right over them. Logan Braden, age 40, from Granite City, just built his fifth hovercraft. After investing about $9,000 and 2-1/2 years of labor, his masterpiece is complete.

This beauty has got up to 61 mph, but he is hoping to get it up even higher. It gets its lift from a 32” 4-bladed propeller with a 16 hp Briggs and Stratton. While the back pushes it with a Subaru 4-cylinder car engine. He is able to just drive it right onto his trailer.

Logan built it from a skeleton with three-quarter inch skinned pine with one-eighth inch marine plywood. The thrust duct and steering rudders are made of styro-foam fiber glassed over with epoxy resin. Most of the material he used was bought locally. The craft is 7-1/2 feet wide and 17-1/2 feet long. And it weighs approximately 1,000 pounds.

He bought the blueprints for model #UH17T from Universal Hovercraft. They have been in business since 1967, created by an aeronautical engineer. They sell kits, as well as buy, sell and trade all types of hovercrafts – new and used. They also sell parts for them. Their website is www.hovercraft.com.

Some people confuse the hovercraft with airboats. Airboats and hovercrafts are similar, yet different in their own way. An airboat is a boat and a plane. They have a nitro engine located on the top of the boat which propels the boat across the water. The hovercraft is lifted and pushed across the water.
Hovercrafts are unique in the way they are supported by a cushion of air. Even though they are supported by air, they are still not considered to be an aircraft. However, they are able to go through rough terrain. Since they can go over land, water and ice, they are used a lot in many rescue situations. The military uses larger ones to transport tanks, cars and other vessels.

Logan has been interested in hovercrafts ever since he was about 9 or 10 years old. Bob Windt, from Universal Hovercraft got him into racing them throughout his teenage years. He raced in areas such as Indiana, Ohio, St. Louis and Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Logan’s hovercraft has already been up to Wisconsin where he landed it on the ice. This is a trip he plans on making again. He will also be attending the Cordova National Rally at Hovercraft America on July 22, 2011.

Logan is married with 2 step-children and 3 grandchildren. He works at Metro East Industries in Fairview Heights, Illinois as a welder. He plans to keep building hovercrafts and making improvements to the one he just built, which was finished last fall. He usually puts it in at Alton and can be seen cruising up and down the Mississippi River.

 Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

Great River Road Closed In Grafton........

Friday, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Great River Road (Route 100) was closed due to flooding along the Mississippi River.  This is not the first time the Great River Road has closed due to high water.  Officials are quick to point out that the majority of Grafton's businesses are open.  The closure affects a small portion of the River Road, close to the Hawg Pit BBQ Barn.  Also due to the flooding, the Brussels Ferry remains closed........

     Floating Business Hurt By Flooding........

Businesses in Hannibal, Missouri are hit hard by floodwaters.  None so much as the Mark Twain Riverboat.  When the floodgates are installed, not only are tourists deterred from visiting, the riverfront where the Mark Twain is located is inaccessible.  As a result, the Mark Twain and her mooring barge have to be moved to a landing on higher ground.  The relocation requires tow vessels and crews.  Last year, the Mark Twain and her barge had to be moved five times........

UPDATE 2: Coast Guard closes portion of Missouri River

ST. LOUIS The U.S. Coast Guard has extended the closure of the Missouri River an additional 100 miles.

The Big Sioux River closure, is still in effect for all vessel traffic and is between the Missouri River confluence and the Military Road Bridge in north Sioux City, S.D., due to high water.

The Mississippi River Is Up....  Again....

Life in America's hometown includes many summer traditions, including the installation of flood gates, rising water, falling water and then the removal of flood gates.  This process is repeated as necessary.  Sometimes the process turns out not to be needed, but with a predicted crest of 23.6 feet, it appears that there is cause for alarm.  Late Thursday morning, the Mississippi River was at 23.4 feet........

2011 Flood Fight....

There has been a lot of discussion about the rising water and what we can expect this summer. Here is some information that might help answer any questions:

Public safety remains the Corps top priority. We ask everyone to stay informed of current conditions and remember there is always risk inherent with flooding.

Current conditions and National Weather Service forecasts indicate only minor flooding is expected in the St. Louis area. However, there is always risk associated with flooding, and there is a potential for higher water if above normal rain falls in the watershed.

There are no reports of any levees overtopping in the St. Louis District. Based on current forecasts, there is no immediate threat of levees overtopping. A range of possibilities have been looked at based on average rain falling in the Missouri River Basin.

We are tracking this event and will continue to evaluate the impacts of the full-range of forecasts provided by the National Weather Service. The St Louis District will continue to provide updated information to our partners so that levee districts, emergency managers, local and state officials, residents and businesses can make informed decisions.

Friday Funnies from BoatUS Public Relations

Mark Zona Wants to Take You Fishing in "Slaunchville"

Dear Friends:
My friend, fishing personality and TV show host Mark Zona is at it again.
You see, we asked him to help us out in spreading the word about BoatUS Angler, our membership program for boat-owning anglers that has lots of great benefits for only $24 a year.

The best news is that if you sign up by July 31, you are eligible to win a fishing trip with a man who creates his own language and very memorable fishing experiences in "Slaunchville" Michigan.

So, Mark came up with this: BoatUS.com/zonafishingtrip

Hope you have a great weekend. And in case you're looking for a little more of Mark's self-deprecating humor, try this: BoatUS.com/zonawatertowing

Bankers In Midwest, Plains Concerned About Flood Effects........

According to a monthly survey of rural bankers in 10 Midwest and Plains states, bankers believe that the Missouri River flooding could effect the economy and tourism across the Midwest.   An Iowa banker stated that the current and possible flooding will have an unfavorable effect on agriculture, businesses and communities along the Missouri River.  A South Dakota banker said that prolonged flooding would devastate tourism throughout the region.  This survey was released on Tuesday........

  Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

     Fishing Banned Within Marina Boundaries........

Some anglers are up in arms over a fishing ban within the city-owned Alton Marina proper, claiming that they have a legal right to cast their lines anywhere in the River.  Karen Baker-Brncic, manager of the Alton Marina, stated that the ban was implemented because of irresponsible behavior of some fishermen, such as climbing on slippery rocks, failing to supervise their children, leaving trash lying about the property, and participating in fishing practices that cause damage to the boats of the Marina's paying tenants.........

Missouri River Levees

Levees Seem To Be Holding....  For Now....

The wall of water released from the reservoirs of the Upper Missouri River reached Iowa and Nebraska Thursday, en route to Missouri.  So far, practically all of the levees along the way have held fast, and no serious injuries or deaths have been reported.  At this point, the main concern will be whether the levees will be able to handle the stress of holding the River back for months on end, as they were designed to retain water for a short period of time.......

River Des Peres At St. Louis, Missouri

Fish Kill In The River Des Peres........

Thursday, several thousand fish were found dead in the River Des Peres.  It is believed that the fish were killed by stagnant water with low oxygen levels.  Fluctuating temperatures may have played a factor as well.  An official with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District stated that this type of event is fairly common during late spring and early summer.  Recently, a MSD contractor sprayed for weeds along the River's banks.  It is not thought that the herbicide caused the fish kill........

Missouri Department of Natural Resources

Preparation efforts can minimize potential environmental concerns during flood situations

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 16, 2011 – Releases from the Missouri River major reservoirs are increasing to unprecedented amounts and additional rainfall within the watershed will determine the severity and duration of flooding this summer. In anticipation of the rising floodwaters, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources would like to encourage citizens located within the Missouri River floodplain to take necessary precautions to help minimize health, safety and environmental concerns from flooding.

Household hazardous waste, agricultural chemicals, propane and other fuel tanks including used oil containers should be removed or secured to prevent exposure with flood waters. All fuel tanks should be properly marked to help identify them and avoid problems in the event of local flooding. In addition, private water well owners should ensure the well cap is free from cracks and secured to the well casing to prevent it from becoming contaminated during a flood with pollutants that be included in the floodwaters.

The department has a natural disaster resource webpage to provide residents of flood-stricken communities’ important information on preparing for and recovering from flooding. The department’s disaster website at dnr.mo.gov/disaster.htm provides community leaders, emergency responders and individuals with a convenient location to find an extensive list of fact sheets to aid in preparation for and recovery from recent floods. A list of a few of those fact sheets are listed below.

Preparation:

Reducing the Impact of Flooding – Agricultural Chemicals, Household Hazardous Waste, Propane Tanks and Private Water Wells.
How to Construct a Sandbag Emergency Levee.
After the flood:

Boil Water Notice and Restoring Drinking Water.
Disaster Response Guidance for Public Drinking Water and Wastewater.
Disaster Response for On-Site Wastewater Systems.
Facts on Open Burning Under Missouri Regulations.
Household Chemicals and Household Hazardous Waste.
How to Handle Asbestos-Containing Debris.
Water Pollution.
What to do with Disaster Debris.
If the fact sheets and documents do not address your questions or communities and residents are unable to access the Web, please call the Missouri Department of Natural Resources at 800-361-4827.

If residents experience a loss in water pressure for any period of time they should contact their public water supply directly for further information and consult the local news media for notification when any health advisories have been issued or lifted. If residents need additional information or cannot reach their water supply representative, call the department’s Public Drinking Water Branch at 800-361-4827 or 573-751-5331 or your nearest regional office. Individuals using private wells that may have been flooded should follow boil order procedures, which are available from their local public health agency.

Rising river stages increases the potential for environmental and recreational hazards. Flooded rivers and streams can become contaminated with sewage, animal wastes and other harmful contaminants, which are why it is important to try to avoid contact with floodwaters. If contact with floodwaters is unavoidable, shower or bathe with anti-bacterial soap afterwards.

In addition, citizens should avoid recreational boating on rivers and streams in flood stage. Rapidly flowing floodwaters can contain unpredictable currents, eddies and can conceal submerged or moving objects.

For more information or questions on environmental concerns, contact the Department of Natural Resources at 800-361-4827 or contact one of the department’s regional offices in your area.

 Missouri River Near Hamburg, Iowa

    Floodwaters Are On The Way........

Floodwaters from the Missouri River are creeping up on the southwestern Iowa town of Hamburg, but at a slower rate than was originally anticipated.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers now believe that the floodwaters will reach the new Hamburg levee by Thursday.  The floodwaters were originally forecast to arrive Wednesday.  As of Wednesday afternoon, floodwaters were around 500 yards away from the levee.........

Missouri River Near St. Louis, Missouri

Only Moderate Flooding Expected In St. Louis Area........

Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that as long as there are no heavy rains, the Missouri River in the St. Louis area will only reach moderate flood stage, and remain there throughout the summer.  The Corps estimates that with normal rainfall, the Missouri River will be around six feet over flood stage at Hermann, and only about three feet above flood stage at Washington and St. Charles.  These estimates take the increased releases from the upstream reservoirs into account........

Missouri River Management

Blunt Blames Flooding On Faulty Plan........

Senator Roy Blunt has stated that he believes that the management of the Missouri River is behind the wall of water heading toward St. Louis.  Blunt claims that a management plan that requires the storage of water in upstream reservoirs is not a well thought out plan.  The current incarnation of the Corps plan was put together in 2004.  It was a collaboration between the Corps and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The plan called for two pulses to be released from the upstream reservoirs to help restore populations of the pallid sturgeon as well as two federally protected birds..../....

Metro East Levees

Officials Check Out Plan For Levee Fixes........

Recently, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council unveiled their proposed five year, $161 million plan for levee upgrades in the Illinois counties of Madison, Monroe and St. Clair.  The District Council was formed to refurbish the levees to 100 year flood protection status.  The Metro East levees are about 74 miles long, and protect an area called the American Bottoms.  That area is home to over 155,000 people and 55,000 jobs........

News Release From BoatUS

Ten Fuel-Saving Tips for Towing the Boat to the Lake

An "Auto Club" for Boaters Provides Reliable Help 24 Hours a Day

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 15, 2011 – With fuel prices high, trailering a boat has become more expensive. However, there are some easy ways to stretch that tank of gas with your tow vehicle. Here are ten tips from BoatUS:

Basic maintenance: Keep your tow vehicle’s engine tuned and replace the engine air filter on a periodic basis.

Drive ahead: Moderate your use of the accelerator pedal by “driving ahead” – by looking ahead and anticipating traffic, you will likely brake less aggressively and reaccelerate without having to be heavy on the fuel-hungry accelerator pedal. Take it easy when starting from a dead stop.

Stop “cruising”: With automatic transmissions, stay off the cruise control, especially when traveling in hills or mountains. Cruise control cannot anticipate going up or down a slope, and tends to use more fuel due when the transmission kicks down to a lower gear to compensate for speed loss on a hill.

Tire tip: Keep tires properly inflated to the recommended PSI on both the tow vehicle and trailer. Check PSI before every trip.

Cover up: On long trips, use a tight-fitting boat cover when towing, which helps decrease wind drag and improves fuel economy.

Lighten up: Lighten the load by carrying just what you need for the day or weekend in the tow vehicle and onboard your boat. Also, at about six pounds per gallon of gas, try to keep the boat’s fuel tank near empty when trailering long distances.

Drain it: Never leave water in a live well or bait tank. At a little over eight pounds per gallon, carrying an extra 25 gallons of water in these built-in tanks can represent 10% of the boat’s total weight. Filled wakeboard boat ballast tanks or bags can also add significantly more weight – from several hundred to over 1,000 pounds of water. Emptying tanks also slows the spread of invasive species.

Slow down: A decrease in towing speed of just five or six miles-per-hour can lead to a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption. Trailer tires have a maximum speed of 65 mph, so going over that will not only harm MPG, but could damage tires as well.

Prepare for the worst: Ensure you have the BoatUS Trailering Club’s “Trailer Assist”. If you have a breakdown it will tow both a tow vehicle and boat trailer up to 100 miles to a repair facility of your choice or get you home. Just $14 (in addition to BoatUS annual dues), this could potentially save you hundreds.

Go local: Plan more trips closer to home this summer.

Swimming beaches at Mark Twain, Truman state parks to reopen Beach at Lake of the Ozarks State Park to remain closed

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JUNE 15, 2011 – The swimming beaches at Mark Twain and Harry S Truman state parks will reopen today, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Lake of the Ozarks State Park's Grand Glaize Beach, also known as Public Beach #2, remains closed following results of water samples taken Monday that indicated bacteria levels higher than those recommended for waters used for swimming. The park’s Public Beach #1, which is located in Kaiser, remains open. The swimming beach at Lake Wappapello State Park remains closed due to area flooding.

The water at all designated beaches in the state park system is sampled weekly during the recreational season by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to determine suitability for swimming. The sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located. Water samples are taken to check for E. coli, a common indicator species for bacteria.

Higher bacteria levels are often associated with heavy rains that result in runoff from adjacent lands. However, there are a number of possibilities that can contribute to higher bacteria, and chances are no single source is the cause. Once tests indicate the bacteria levels are within the standard suitable for swimming, the beach will reopen. Information about current status of beaches is available on the website at http://bit.ly/MoStateParksBeachStatus as well as mostateparks.com. Signs indicating the status of the beaches are posted at the beaches as well.

Most of the other facilities at these parks remain open and available to the public. A list of facility advisories is available at mostateparks.com. Missouri's state parks and historic sites offer something to suit everyone's taste - outdoor adventure, great scenery and a bit of history. With Missouri's 85 state parks and historic sites, the possibilities are boundless.

Hi Bill,

We were out on Enterprise on June 4th and I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that all trash should be picked up before we all leave the islands we visit. I have attached a few pictures to show what we found.

The first picture is of a piece of a clay bird. There were pieces all over one end of the island, along with the shot gun shells.
Everyone please be careful so you do not cut your foot.

Dardeen Creek Bridge on Hwy B in St Charles County

Robert Cope received the following from Andy Tuerck of the Missouri Department of Transportation....

Hello Robert,

Yes, you are correct, the work cannot begin on June 20th. We've been watching the river gauge fluctuations, and it's certainly not going our way right now. We will basically just keep postponing until MoDOT and the contractor are comfortable with the level of the Dardenne Creek. The electronic message boards that you see will get updated as soon as possible, but will probably just be pushed back on a weekly basis depending on the river forecast.

Thanks for your patience, and let us know if you have more questions.

Upper Missouri River Flooding

Record Flood Levels Reached On The Missouri........

On June 13th, the level of the Missouri River near Williston, North Dakota reached 29.29 feet, overtopping the former record of 28.0 feet that was set in 1912.  The U.S. National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service pointed out that these gauge readings can be affected by backwater from Lake Sakakawea downstream.  NASA has 2 comparative photos shot of the area a year apart........

Missouri River In Franklin County, Missouri

Franklin Gearing Up For Potential Flooding........

Towns located in Franklin Count, Missouri are getting ready for possible flooding along the Missouri River coming within the next few weeks.  To prepare, Franklin has procured 1000 sandbags, and towns are stocking up on sand.  About twice the record amount of water is being released from Upper Missouri River Reservoirs.  These releases, combined with record rainfalls and melting snowpack has conspired to swell the Missouri River from her banks.  Jefferson County should see the first wave of high water by Wednesday.......

 Mark Twain Wrote .........

"One who knows the Mississippi will promptly aver - not aloud, but to himself that ten thousand River Commissions, with the minds of the world at their back, cannot tame that lawless stream, cannot curb it or confine it, cannot say to it, go here, or go there, and make it obey; cannot save a shore which it has sentenced; cannot bar its path with an obstruction which it will not tear down, dance over, and laugh at."

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Tubing Teen Struck By PWC

Monday, a teen on a tube was run over by a youth piloting a personal watercraft on the Lake of the Ozarks.  The teen on the tube was being reeled in after a tube ride when an 11 year old boy idling on the PWC accidentally ran over the 14 year old girl causing moderate injuries.  The parents of the 11 year old have been cited by the Water Patrol, as the boy was operating the PWC illegally.  In Missouri, vessel operators must be at least 14 years of age, unless under the direct, onboard of a parent or guardian, or person 16 years of age or older........

Very Sad News to report:
Past Commodore (2009) Denny Galkowski passed away following complications from surgery after he had suffered a stroke. Denny was my mentor and Commodore my year as Fleet Captain and I could not have done it without his help and input. He was a very strong supporter of both the Con Trios Yacht Club and the Ble...ssing of the Fleet, having served as a Board Member on both organizations. Please refrain from contacting Pat as she desperately needs private time with family while she mourns this unexpected loss. No arrangements are planned.

Missouri River Near Big Lake, Missouri

Another Levee Breach In Northwest Missouri.........

On Monday, a second levee failed along the Missouri River close to the town of Big Lake, in Holt County, Missouri.  The town has around 150 residents, and most have evacuated.  The 30 remaining residents have been warned to leave the area.  The break in the 5 mile long earthen levee is about 225 feet in length.  There are no plans to plug the breach because of safety issues.  Officials state a second levee in Holt County is apt to fail as well........

Missouri River Near Hamburg, Iowa

    When The Levee Breaks...

Monday, the levee along the Missouri River protecting the areas surrounding Hamburg, Iowa failed, allowing the River to spill into low-lying farmlands.  The levee breach was initially around 50 feet in length, but has since widened to about 300 feet.  A witness to the breach believed that it was caused by a sand boil.  Workers moved quickly to add another three feet to a temporary levee at Hamburg.  City officials warn that floodwaters could reach the temporary levee within 24 hours........

PETA Calls For End To Illinois Fishing Program.........

On the heels of a recent release from the Illinois Policy Institute listing Illinois' "Urban Fishing" program on their "Top 10 most obviously wasteful state programs", PETA is calling on Illinois to drop the program from their budget.  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claim that the "Urban Fishing" program has spent $365,000 teaching urban youths to "torture fish" as unpaid bills stack up.  PETA failed to mention that the "Urban Fishing" program is not funded by taxes, but exclusively from hunting and fishing fees, which cannot be used for anything other than hunting or fishing programs........

Recently, Col. News Release From BoatUS

More "Lost" Boaters Found with BoatUS Towing App
Over 36,000 Boaters Have Downloaded to Date

OCEAN CITY, NJ, June 13, 2011 – It was every boater’s bad ending to the weekend. On a late Sunday afternoon two weeks ago, a 21-foot bowrider with two persons aboard broke down on a foggy bay off the New Jersey coast. Unfortunately, the small vessel did not have a VHF radio or a chart plotter showing their precise location. But the captain and mate did have a cell phone with them, so they called the BoatUS Towing Services 24-hour dispatch center for assistance (800-391-4869).

The two boaters were tired and wanted to get home, but, unfortunately, gave the BoatUS dispatcher a poor description of the surroundings where they thought they were located. Upon hearing this information, local TowBoatUS captains in Beach Haven, Ocean City and Barnegat Light quickly deduced that it didn’t add up.

So how did BoatUS find the bowrider?

TowBoatUS Ocean City’s Capt. Patti Kearney says, “We solved the problem by advising the boaters to download the BoatUS Smart Phone App.” Once the couple completed this easy task, the BoatUS dispatcher was automatically provided the vessel’s precise latitude and longitude information, and Capt. Kearney was able to quickly locate the boat and bring it back home safely.

The App reduces towboat response times by using the accuracy of the GPS latitude and longitude technology built into smart phones, and also adds helpful location and tracking features. Since its launch in February, over 36,000 boaters, sailors and anglers have downloaded it.

The BoatUS Towing App can also work well with your float plan, allowing you to easily text or email loved ones ashore, allowing them to “track” your trip on the BoatUS online Member Service Locator map. The App also gives smart phone users the option of seeing their own location on Google maps (when their cell phone’s Internet connection is operable).

BoatUS reminds boaters that a VHF marine radio should be the first choice for emergency communications and they should always contact the US Coast Guard or local law enforcement in an emergency situation. However, having the App is a great backup for routine breakdowns and it can be easily downloaded by going to www.BoatUS.com/app. It’s available for both Android and Apple iPhones.

BoatUS offers on-the-water towing service plans – much like a roadside assistance club for boaters - for freshwaters for $58 a year and saltwaters for $149 which includes BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership. Go to www.BoatUS

Missouri River Flooding

Cities Along The Missouri Hope Levees Hold........

Early this week, peak flows are anticipated at the riverfront communities along the Missouri River.  The U.S. Army has gradually increased the outflow of water from the reservoirs along the Missouri River.  It is expected that the increase in the amount of water flowing through the lower portions of the Missouri River will exposes weaknesses in the flood protections.  The River is believed to be 5 - 7 feet above flood stage throughout Nebraska and Iowa, and up to 10 feet above flood stage in Missouri, overtopping several rural levees........

Lake Taneycomo

Floods Occurring More Often Due To Development........

Since Lake Taneycomo has flooded three times in the past three years, residents are asking why this is occurring since the Lake has not had any significant flooding since Table Rock Dam was completed in the late 1950's.  It is thought that development around the Lake and in the White River watershed is contributing to higher Lake levels.  Water is making a quick trip over pavement and into the Lake as opposed to being absorbed by plants, pastures and forests........

Water Management Project To Commence This Fall........

This fall, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will begin a four year water management project whose goal is to encourage migratory waterfowl to remain in the area longer.  Plans call for a new multi pump and drain system to be installed in place of the old single pump system.  New spillways will combat erosion issues that arise during spring floods.......
