YesterYear's Pictures of the Day in 2010.......... was sent to us by Capt'n Steve Nonn, who hails out of Alton marina in he boat ...."Nothin But A Good Time."

Hi Bill

Alton Marina crew hooked up on Weber Lake for Memorial Day fun

Ended up with 15 boats anchored out and having a great time!

Weber Lake is behind an island that sits just about half mile up river from Longshots, great place to anchor out.  Don't know if its an official name, that's what John Rucker (Who's Your Daddy) calls it.

Waterford, New York

Waterford is a great town that has a lot to offer. We've enjoyed riding bikes, the many parks, the people and of course free full hook-up. Our time has extended here due to the Erie Canal not being fully open. There has been a lot of boats passing through Lock 2 next to our boat, but are now all stacked up near the closed lock. A man working at the Welcome Center and the Lockmaster stated we better stay put as boats are rafted three deep on lock walls with no amenities. It may open today, but with the holiday weekend, temperatures reaching 90 degrees and a sailing regatta further up where they close the river....I think we'll let the mob pass thru for a day!

Upper Missouri River Flooding

Already Flooded Towns Getting Ready For More Water........

During a temporary reprieve from storms that dumped up to 8 inches of rain over a period of a few days, residents and crews across Montana cleared debris from homes and roadways, even though more storms are expected over the Memorial Day weekend.  Predictions are for up to three more inches of rain, which could raise the flood waters.  The additional rain, coupled with the additional releases will be causing flooding throughout the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri........

Loading Dock Barters Salsa For Water........

Over the Memorial Day Weekend, The Loading Dock at Grafton, Illinois has been swapping their handmade salsa for cases of water.  The water was collected for the Joplin, Missouri area's recovery efforts.  Many donors simply dropped off the water, and asked for nothing in return.  An anonymous employee of the Alton Lowe's purchased and donated 42 cases of water, which are on a pallet at the store.  As of 2 pm Sunday, about 200 cases of water had been collected........

    Flood Warnings Called Off........

Friday, the National Weather Service called off their several weeks long flood warning for New Orleans and areas downstream, thanks to a drop in the level of the Mississippi River.  The warning is still in effect for locations upriver, including Baton Rouge, where levee seepage has shut down lanes on their River Road.  Many reasons are cited for the flood warning cancellation, including a drop in River levels upstream, and the ability of the Bonnet Carre and Morganza spillways to divert water........

News Release

EMPHASIS: Boaters Cautioned As Water Levels Rise Again On Table Rock Lake

Major Tommy E. Roam, director of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division, advises boaters on Table Rock Lake to take extra caution and keep vigilant watch for floating debris. The water level at Table Rock Lake is for the second time this year near record stages. This is causing higher than normal amounts of debris to be floating in the lake. The high water levels also have made access to the lake an issue as many boat ramps and marina facilities are not accessible. The Army Corps of Engineers has a list of boat ramps that are open on their website. To check boat launch ramp accessibility visit www.swl.usace.army.mil and click on park conditions, Table Rock Lake.

Boaters need to have extra patience when launching boats this weekend as fewer boat ramps may mean longer lines. It is important to be a courteous boat operator and avoid areas where structures are flooded. When operation near flooded structures is necessary do so at idle speed. There are many signs, benches, and other structures near the shoreline that are normally on dry land, but now are underneath the water due to the elevated lake levels. As always, take the extra time to check your boat’s safety equipment, wear your lifejackets, and use a designated skipper if your plans include alcohol.

Boaters are hoping to kick off the unofficial start to the boating season this Memorial Day weekend, despite high waters along the Mississippi River, soaring boat gas prices and severe weather this spring.  Missouri State Water Patrol Officer Cpl. Lou Amighetti pointed out that the flooding is not as bad as originally anticipated, however, the water levels combined with the fuel prices and rain conspire to keep the boaters away.  Boater Wally Scott stated that it was too soon to be concerned with the boating season, since things don't really start going on until the Fourth of July........

Missouri River In Northwest Missouri

Farmland Getting Soaked By Rising River........

Low lying farmland in northwest Missouri is getting inundated by an overflowing Missouri River.  More flooding is anticipated as the water released from upstream reservoirs gets to historic levels.  At this time, the water has not overtopped the northwestern Missouri levees, but it is out of it's banks and in between the levees.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is gradually increasing releases from the five upstream reservoirs to 110,000 cubic feet per second.  This will eclipse the previous high water mark of 70,000 cfs set in 1997........

Friday, archaeologists recovered an anchor from what is believed to be the wreck of the pirate Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.  The wreck is located off of the coast of North Carolina.  Originally, divers intended to recover a larger anchor, that was atop of the ballast pile, but that anchor was too well attached to the wreck.  The recovery could be a boon to North Carolina officials who are trying to increase tourism interest in the shipwreck.  Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge were recently featured in the latest movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise........

News Release From BoatUS

Clean Bottoms: Will Boaters Be Left Holding the Bag?
BoatUS Urges Boat Owners to Speak up No on Bottom Paint Bill

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 27, 2011 -- The California State Senate is about to consider a bill that, if passed, will ban copper antifouling paint for recreational boats. Also known as “bottom paint,” the brushed, rolled-on, or sprayed-on coatings contain copper, an effective biocide that prevents marine growth such as barnacles, seaweeds and other organic matter on a boat’s hull or bottom. If left alone and without any preventative measures, this marine growth can substantially increase fuel consumption, reduce steering ability, and eventually render a boat inoperable.

California Senate Bill 623 has passed through two committees and is now headed to a vote by the full Senate. Because this proposal will affect the maintenance options available for boaters, sailors and anglers who keep their boats in the water, BoatUS encourages Golden State boat owners to take a few minutes now to contact your Senator and express your views.

As currently written, CA Senate Bill 623 includes provisions that:

After 1/1/2015: Prohibit the sale of new recreational boats with copper bottom paint.

After 1/1/2019: Prohibit the use or application of antifouling paint containing copper on recreational boats.

BoatUS has been monitoring developments in alternative antifouling paints for more than a decade and understands the origins and respects the good environmental intentions of this bill. However, currently there are few effective and cost-conscious alternatives to keep hulls clean. The March 2011 issue of the well-regarded Practical Sailor magazine analyzed 62 antifouling paints, of which 12 contained no copper. In terms of performance, just one non-copper bottom paint (which contained zinc) rated “excellent,” one rated “fair," and ten rated “poor.”

BoatUS also has concerns that recreational boaters are being unfairly and unwisely singled out, as this ban would only apply to recreational boats, which may not provide a large enough market to stimulate research and development on new alternative coatings. Much larger commercial and military vessels would still be able to use copper paints. In addition, copper paints currently serve as the primary defense against invasive species transfer from hulls to waterways.

“Bringing new products to market takes significant lead time and money,” said BoatUS Vice President of Government Affairs Margaret Podlich. “How do we know there will be alternatives that are effective and affordable by the bill’s deadline? We recognize that there are many opinions about this bill, and encourage boaters to contact your state Senator to express your own views. We support innovation in antifouling paint and we hope that sustainable solutions for boaters and the environment can be found.”

California boaters can email their Senator by going to www.BoatUS.com/gov/caaction. For an update on this and other government affairs topics please visit BoatUS.com/gov.

Busy boating weekend prompts Coast Guard reminder of dangers from drinking and boating

CLEVELAND .... Memorial Day weekend is traditionally one of the busiest boating weekends in the Great Lakes region, so the Coast Guard is asking mariners to boat responsibly by taking appropriate safety precautions and to designate a sober boat operator.

Boating under the influence is just as deadly as drinking and driving a motor vehicle, and alcohol accounts for nearly one-third of all recreational boating fatalities.

Drink for drink, a boat operator is likely to become impaired more quickly than a driver. Alcohol is more hazardous on the water than on land because the marine environment motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray accelerates a drinkers impairment. These stressors cause fatigue that makes a boat operators coordination, judgment and reaction time decline even faster when using alcohol.

Alcohol can also cause an inner ear disturbance which can make it impossible for a person who falls in the water to distinguish up from down.

The penalties for boating under the influence can include large fines, revocation of operator privileges and serious jail terms.

Boaters who want to make alcohol part of the day's entertainment should plan to have a party ashore at the dock, in a picnic area, at a boating club, or in a backyard, choosing a location that allows sufficient time to sober up before getting back into a car or boat.

Additional information about boating under the influence is available here.

I like the old aluminum boats. Arkansas traveler, Duracraft, mostly 1950's runabouts.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River urges boaters to be safe on the water

ST. LOUIS — While recreational boating is enjoyed safely by thousands every year, in 2011 there have been approximately 700 fatalities from boating accidents. With this statistic in mind, the Coast Guard is again encouraging boaters to "Wear It!" during National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27.

Wearing a life jacket can make the difference between life and death. According to 2009 Coast Guard statistics, 90 percent of boaters who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

Additionally in 2009:

•The Coast Guard recorded nearly 5,000 accidents that involved 736 deaths, 3,358 injuries and approximately $36 million of property damage;
•Only 24 percent of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction;
•Eighty-one percent of the deaths that occurred on vessels less than 16 feet were from drowning;
•Eighteen children under age 13 lost their lives while boating in 2008; 63 percent of those deaths were from drowning.

This means that more than 500 boaters died unexpectedly because they were uninformed or simply not in the habit of taking the significant safety precaution of wearing their life jacket. It is human nature to think it can’t happen to me -- but it can. The majority of people who drown in boating accidents know how to swim, but become incapacitated in the water and sometimes they are injured or unconscious. Others develop hypothermia or become exhausted. Some are weighed down by clothing.

An accident usually happens without warning. Usually after the accident, the life jackets are not within reach -- in cabinets, trapped under the vessel, floating far away in the water.

Other reasons why people don’t wear a life jacket are that it is too hot, or it will mess up their tan line, or they are simply not comfortable. Many people don’t realize the variety of new life jackets that are on the market -- belt packs and other inflatable styles that are low profile and light weight.

In addition to wearing life jackets and having the required safety equipment, boaters should create a float plan that lets others know where they are going and when they plan on returning. A copy of the float plan should be left with a friend, relative or local marina before heading out on the water. If a boater has an emergency, the information will be available to local authorities and the Coast Guard. This step can save valuable time if a search and rescue effort is needed.

Boaters should also take the following steps to ensure they are ready for summer on the water:

•ALWAYS wear a properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
•Be aware of weather and water conditions.
•Never go boating alone.
•Be cautious - do not exceed your ability or the capability of your vessel.
•Know that alcohol and drugs contribute to accidents. DO NOT DRINK AND BOAT!
•Be constantly aware of other vessels in the immediate area and refrain from jumping the wake from other vessels.
•Have a working VHF marine-band radio, or Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) onboard. A cell phone can be a viable second device, but should not replace a working VHF marine-band radio or EPIRB.

The Coast Guard also strongly recommends all boaters and paddlers take a recreational boating safety course to enhance their navigational skills. (Only 10 percent of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had received boating safety instruction.) Courses are offered through a boaters respective state, or with the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the U.S. Power Squadrons, both of which can be accessed through http://uscgaux.org/ or http://usps.org/. Additional course information is available through the BOAT/U.S. Foundation at 1-800-336-BOAT.

Upper Missouri River Flooding

    Corps Upping Water Releases....  Again....

Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they would be increasing the unprecedented water releases from the dams along the upper Missouri River.  This is the third time the Corps announced increased releases to relieve pressure on the dams.  The Gavins Point Dam will increase it's releases to 110,000 cubic feet per second by the end of June, or the start of July.  The releases from Gavins Point affect Nebraska, Iowa, and places downstream........

Lower Mississippi River Shipping

    River Shipping Slowed By Floods........

The flooding along the Mississippi River has caused a decrease in the amount of freight moved along the River.  Normally, tows on the lower Mississippi River are made up of 30 - 40 barges, each carrying up to 1,500 tons of cargo.  River conditions have cut the number of barges roughly in half.  Under ideal conditions, the job of a towboat pilot is tricky,  During times of high water, that job becomes dangerous........

Three Missouri state park swimming beaches will not be opening as planned, and a fourth beach closed two days before the Memorial Day weekend, on account of elevated E.coli levels.  During the warmer summer months, the Department of Natural Resources samples weekly for E.coli.  The opening delays were at two beaches in Lake of the Ozarks State Park and one at Cuivre River State Park.  Last weekend, Pomme de Terre State Park opened, but has since closed again........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Checks

Safe Boats Save Lives

Learn the federal and state requirements for operating a vessel, and make sure your boat or personal watercraft is in compliance. Have a Vessel Safety Check performed to ensure that your vessel meets these requirements and has all the necessary safety equipment on board and in good condition.

Flotilla 3-13 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary conduct a free Vessel Safety Check Station at North Shore Marina on Saturday, May 28th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

If you will not be available at this time, you can still request to schedule a safety check for your vessel by contacting Ron South at rons1769@sbcglobal.net.

A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain Safety Equipment required by State and the Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will also make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will make you a safer boater.

This is not a boarding or a law enforcement issue. No citations will be given as a result of any deficiencies found. We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given. Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal. This does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared to make this a positive encounter

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

Judge imposes maximum fine in zebra mussel case

SMITHVILLE – An Independence man received the maximum fine for introducing zebra mussels into Smithville Lake last year.

David Wayne Frazier, 51, pleaded guilty in Clay County Circuit Court to a charge of transporting a prohibited species. Judge Janet Sutton imposed a fine of $1,000 and six months of probation.

The case is the first prosecuted under a provision in Missouri’s Wildlife Code designed to stop the spread of invasive species. It began on June 28, 2010, when fisheries workers with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) discovered adult zebra mussels on a private boatlift during a swimming inspection of the Camp Branch Marina. An investigation by Conservation Agent Scott Stephens revealed that in October 2009, Frazier moved the boatlift from Lake of the Ozarks, where zebra mussels already were established.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and MDC staff immediately removed and decontaminated the lift. MDC, in cooperation with the Corps, Clay County Parks and Recreation and the City of Smithville, used a copper-based algae killer to eradicate the zebra mussel infestation in August 2010.

The Corps continues to monitor the lake for residual zebra mussels. None have been detected so far.

“Transporting invasive species like zebra mussels, emerald ash borers or silver carp from place to place can damage Missouri’s recreation, tourism and agriculture industries,” said MDC Invasive Species Coordinator Tim Banek.

For information about how to identify invasive species and how to avoid spreading them, visit www.mdc.mo.gov/node/4086.

News Release From BoatUS

Boaters: Tips For Preparing For Summer Lightning Storms

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 25, 2011 – The weather’s power and rage showed itself recently with the devastating springtime tornados that roared through the south. For recreational boaters, summer thunderstorms bring danger not only with wind and waves, but also with lightning strikes. BoatUS’ Seaworthy Magazine recently took a look at how to protect yourself from this hazard while boating, sailing and fishing on the open water and has these tips:

•Don’t wait until it’s too late: Get off the water early: Getting to safe harbor is the safest bet. If you’re in a powerboat and can’t get in, you may be able to get around the storm.
•Inside is best: If you can’t get off the water in time, the best place to be on a boat is inside any cabin, but avoid being near mast or chainplates (sailboats), or large metal appliances like refrigerators.
•Keep away from metal: If there is no “down below” and you’re stuck out on deck, stay away from metal railings, wheels, the mast and mast stays (both on sailboats), or any other metal fittings. A boater was killed in North Carolina when lightning jumped from his sailboat’s backstay to his head and then the metal steering wheel he was holding.
•Don’t be a lightning rod: If you’re on an open boat, stay low and in the center. Depending on the severity of your situation, it’s also a good idea to remove jewelry. The US Coast Guard reports a case a few years ago in which lightning struck a man who was standing up wearing a large medallion.
•Stay out of the water: Don’t fish during a thunderstorm – or dangle toes overboard.
•Disconnect the power and antenna leads to your electronics: Many strikes just damage electronics so disconnecting them goes a long way in preventing equipment damage.
•Lower antenna: Unless they serve as part of a lightning protection system, lower any antennas.
•Stay silent: Don’t use the VHF unless absolutely necessary.
•Lightning grounding protection systems: Grounding systems, which provide a path for the lightning to enter and safely exit the boat, must be free of corrosion if they are going to provide any protection.
•Dissipater dilemma: As for mast-top lightning dissipaters, there is no agreement by the experts on how well or if they work at all. It should be noted that BoatUS insurance claims files show that boats with “brush-like” dissipaters mounted at the top of the mast have been struck by lightning.
•If you do get hit: 1) Check people first; 2) then check the bilge as strikes can rupture through-hull fittings and punch holes in hulls; 3) check electronics and compass, and if all is good up to this point, 4), you may want to consider a short haul to check the bottom thoroughly (trailerboats can be inspected when you get back home). The challenge with lightning strikes is that they sometimes leave hard to find traces of damage that may only be seen when the boat is out of the water.

For more information, read “We’ve Been Hit! Surviving a Lightning Strike” by David Keen in the April 2011 issue of BoatUS Seaworthy Magazine found online at www.BoatUS.com/Seaworthy.

Growing up my dad always had a boat and we owned Blue Springs Pool in Fenton.  So, one day, probably over a few cold ones, my dad decided to put our boat in the pool.  With the help of my Uncle Buss and several of our regular customers, the motor was removed, fence taken down and the boat and motor carried into the pool where it was re-assembled!  If I recall correctly the boat was a 15' wood Delta with about a 40 horsepower Mercury.  This is the same boat I learned to drive in at Lake of the Ozarks.  Here's a couple of pics of the adventure.  In the starboard side pic I am the one standing in the pass through with my uncle driving.  In the port side pic my Dad is driving and I am the on the one in back with the paddle.

Enjoy, Darryll

Ohio River In Southern Illinois

    River Receded, Parks Still Closed........

Floodwaters from the Ohio River might have receded, but 13 southern Illinois state parks that had been flooded remain closed.  Now, crews are scrambling to get the parks cleaned up in time for the Memorial Day weekend as well as summertime camping.  The entire 12,000 acre Horseshoe Lake State Park was completely inundated by floodwaters.  Inmates from the Tamms maximum security prison are helping out with the cleanup........

Historic Floods

Is The Mississippi On The Greatest Floods List?

The crest of the Mississippi River flood of 2011 will be moving through New Orleans and on out to sea later this week.   Currently, the peak River discharge of 2 million cubic feet per second if rivaling those witnessed during the historic flood of 1927.  Over the course of the past 2 million years, there have been many "megafloods" around the world that dwarf the current Mississippi River flood.  The USGS report that ranked known flood events put a flood that occurred in Oregon and Washington State during the last ice age at number one.  It's peak flow reached up to 600 million cubic feet per second........

Illinois River Water Quality

Illinois River Is On Watch List........

The American Rivers organization has listed the Illinois River on their watch list.  The Illinois is on the list because of issues such as flood management.  Since around 30 million tons of cargo are moved along the Illinois River in the Peoria area, it is also important to keep the River clean.  The city is trying to finalize plans to prevent sewer overflows into the River, and rectify their sedimentation issues as well........

Boat Tunes

Kenny Chesney's Love Of Boating Expressed In Song........

It is well known that when Kenny Chesney is not recording or on the road, he is likely to be found aboard one of his boats.  In fact, his love of boating led him to record a song titled Boats, which appears on the album Lucky Old Sun.  The song includes the lyrics, "vessels of freedom/harbors of healing", which pretty much sums up how Chesney feels when he is out on the water........

Missouri Department of Conservation

    Free Fishing Days  June 11-12

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – “Gone fishing” signs will be posted on doors across the state June 11 and 12 as Missourians enjoy a favorite outdoor pastime at no cost. Each year, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) designates the weekend after the first Monday in June as Free Fishing Days in Missouri. The idea is to encourage people to explore the state’s fishing opportunities without having to purchase permits, trout stamps or trout park daily tags.

Fishing is a pastime suitable for all ages. Free Fishing Days encourages experienced anglers to practice a favorite hobby and lures new anglers to try something that could catch them hook, line and sinker. With more than 300 conservation-area fishing lakes or ponds, these opportunities are in no shortage. Missouri waters hold more than 200 fish species. Anglers target 40 of these as game fish, including crappie, catfish, walleye, muskie, goggle-eye and bass.

Normal fishing regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Regulations are outlined in the 2011 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations, which is available wherever fishing permits are sold, or online at www.mdc.mo.gov/node/11414. Special permits may still be required at county, city and private fishing areas. Free Fishing Days exempts anglers from permit and tag fees only, not parking or other park fees.

Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many offer disabled-accessible facilities. For more information about places to fish, visit www.mdc.mo.gov/node/2478 or contact the nearest MDC office.

The Pictures of the Day .... are from Paul Barbary who hails out of Grafton Harbor in the boat...... "The Last One."

Hi Bill,

Sunday afternoon we took a cruise up the Illinois River. My wife Joan and I were guests of Ken and Sharon Pisarek, on their vessel "Boatweiser II". With Ken at the helm and their dog Charlie at his side we had a smooth ride. Sharon and Joan were in charge of the aft deck, and all I had to do was to enjoy the ride. The weather held off and it was a great day. Thank you Ken, Sharon & Charlie.

See you on the river,

YesterYear's Pictures of the Day in 2008....... were sent to us by Greg Jost

1929 on the Mississippi River

Hello Bill,
These are the pictures I have told you about. They were taken in the Summer of 1929.  The one on the beach (top) was taken right across from what is now the Duck Club, facing down towards Grafton.  You can see the bluffs in the distant background.  The second guy from the right (sitting down) is my grandfather, Earl Gruenenfelder.  It was his boat.

The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear.  It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club.  They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93.    I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.

Hope you enjoy these,

Greg Jost

Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee Announces

2011 Asian Carp Monitoring and Rapid Response Plan for Illinois Waters

CHICAGO- The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ACRCC) today released its 2011 Asian Carp Monitoring and Rapid Response Plan (MRRP), outlining an aggressive set of actions to track and remove Asian carp in the Upper Illinois River and the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS) to prevent this invasive species from establishing in the Great Lakes.

In 2010, Federal and state partners executed an aggressive, coordinated Asian carp monitoring and sampling strategy, dedicating more than 16,000 hours to surveying and removing Asian carp in more than 200 miles of Illinois waterway. On-the-ground actions ranged from cutting-edge scientific analysis of water samples for Asian carp DNA to intensive use of traditional fishing methods such as electrofishing and netting. These actions were part of a comprehensive, multi-tiered Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework first released by the Obama Administration in May 2010. The 2011 MRRP
summarizes the monitoring results from 2010, continues and intensifies these monitoring and sampling actions to take advantage of new technology, tools and understanding of this invasive species, and outlines a strategy for rapid response in the event an Asian carp is found above the barrier system in the CAWS.

Record fish a reminder of unwanted “successes”

CAMDENTON–Gene Swope, Excelsior Springs, and his grandsons will always remember April 23, 2011, as the day they set a Missouri State fishing record. Fisheries Programs Specialist Andrew Branson shares their excitement, but he has mixed emotions about the monster fish that earned them a place in the record book.

Swope was snagging for paddlefish with grandsons Garron Grass and Justin Swope near the Old Oar House Inn at Lake of the Ozarks when he snagged a 106-pound bighead carp. A 35-minute tussle ensued. When Swope finally brought in the 4-foot, 8-inch fish, it took the combined strength of all three anglers to wrestle it into the boat.

Fisheries Management Biologist Tory Mason verified the fish’s weight on a scale at the Lawson Agri-Services. The catch easily eclipsed Missouri’s previous record of 80 pounds for a bighead carp caught through snagging or other “alternative methods.”

Branson, who administers the state fishing records program for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), said the bighead carp is classified as a nongame fish. Snagging is a legal method for taking nongame fish in Missouri, but it is not a method allowed under the rules of the International Game Fish Association. Consequently, Swope’s fish does not qualify as a world record, even though it outweighs the existing record by 16 pounds.

According to Branson, bighead carp are not known to spawn successfully in lakes or ponds. They need current to suspend their eggs in the water during development. The fact that anglers are not catching any young bighead carp at Lake of the Ozarks is a good sign.

“Bighead carp are an invasive Asian species,” said Branson. “This is an example of how invasive species can thrive outside of their native environment, and the importance of preventing their spread. At least anglers are removing some of these from the lake, and that’s good news.”

Good news, said Branson, because bighead carp and other invasive species have the potential to upset the ecological balance in Missouri waters. The consequences for popular species, like paddlefish, bass and crappie, could be serious. The presence of Asian carp in Missouri waters also has implications for other forms of recreation, such as boating and skiing. Bighead carp are close relatives of silver carp, which have become notorious for their habit of jumping several feet in the air when passed by watercraft. Human injuries have grown more common as Asian carp spread and multiply.

Tim Banek is MDC’s invasive species coordinator. He said anglers have an important role in preventing the spread of invasive species. One thing they can do to prevent the spread of Asian carp is not to move baitfish from one lake to another or release them alive.

“Many different kinds of fish look like minnows when they are small,” said Banek. “It is easy for a few invasive fish to get mixed in with baitfish. If any of those get loose, they can start a completely new infestation. It’s important for anglers to obtain minnows and other bait locally and dispose of unused bait properly.”

Atlantic Ocean

We finally said goodbye to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches. We made the most of our rainy, cool, windy, foggy days at Beach Haven. It was the perfect time to regroup mentally and take a break from cruising. We were able to provision at the nearby market and relax without studying the weather every moment of the day and the constant demands of cruising. We always take each day in stride, but this gave us an opportunity to just slow down for awhile.
There's no 'slowin down' for Jaxon as he runs circles around us daily
