Metro East Levees FEMA Certified The Wood River Levee........
The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently released their final decision in certifying the Wood River Drainage and Levee District. This means that property owners could save thousands of dollars in flood insurance.
Wood River Mayor Cheryl Maguire says that the decision is good, not only for Wood RIver, but also the communities of East Alton, Hartford, Roxana and South Roxana, as no more properties will be added to the FEMA flood map.
Mary Beth Caruso, FEMA Region V director says that based upon FEMA's compliance review, all requirements necessary for full accreditation have been met for the Wood River Flood Protection District.........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri Sundial Has Returned To The Riverfront........
The sundial that Scott Haycraft constructed 14 years ago has returned home to it's place at Glascock's Landing along Hannibal's riverfront. Haycraft constructed the 200 pound sundial out of stainless steel. He says that he wanted to create something that was functional art.
Haycraft says that he spent some time researching the procedures for building a sundial so that it would tell the time of day correctly. Sundials tell time in reference to the position of the sun in the sky.
Haycraft reports that it took him approximately two months to construct the sundial. He says that he felt that it would fit in well with Hannibal's riverfront........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri What Was Lost To Make Way For The Arch?
While the Gateway Arch is a source of pride for many people and a defining symbol of St. Louis, this wasn't always the case. There was quite a bit of St. Louis' history sacrificed to make way for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.
Even though St. Louis was struggling economically like other cities during the Great Depression, the riverfront wasn't as dilapidated as many city officials believed, At the time, the riverfront boasted 290 active businesses, 5,000 workers and a vacancy rate of 2 percent over 37 acres.
The area was also home to several early skyscrapers and historic buildings featuring cast-iron facades. The buildings were unique to the St. Louis Riverfrotn and some local historians protested their loss........

Spring Flooding Officials: Think About Flood Safety........
Spring has arrived, and that means that there is potential for spring flooding. Experts are taking this opportunity to raise awareness of flooding, and more importantly, the dangers of flash flooding.
According to meteorologist Nicole Batzek with the National Weather Service, motorists should not underestimate the power of or the speed of water moving across a roadway.
Batzek says that it can look like you can get through easily enough, but you cannot tell how deep the water is. It only takes 12 inches of water to sweep a vehicle away........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri A Look Back At The Arrival Of The Santa Maria........
On March 29, 1969 a small crowd turned out to the Mississippi River at St. Louis, braving blustery 30 degree temperatures to witness the arrival of a replica of the Christopher Columbus ship, the Santa Maria.
The 80 foot replica was opened to the public on April 25, 1969, and drew in a modest average of 450 visitors each day. When the evening of June 28th rolled around, a thunderstorm tore through St. Louis spawning tornados , 70 MPH winds and 2 inches of rainfall.
THe storm broke the moorings of the Becky Thatcher restaurant boat with 100 people aboard, carrying the Santa Maria with it. After making it 2 miles downstream, the vessels struck a dock on the Illinois bank causing the Santa Maria to sink. The Becky Thatcher and all aboard were saved........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri St. Louis Ranks Well In Water Quality........
St. Louis residents know that their drinking water is second to none across the nation, but how does the STL stack up where other uses for water are concerned?
Yard-Care company LawnStarter recently released their 2021 Best Cities For Water Quality list, which looks at the 200 largest U.S. Cities in several categories, including consumer satisfaction, amount of quality violations and the percentage of homes lacking in basic plumbing.
St. Louis ranked at number 41 out of 200. Out of the STL's neighbors, only two came out ahead, with Nashville ranking 17th and Louisville ranking 19th. Ranking lower than the STL were Kansas City (53), Memphis (79), and Chicago (117)........

Over the past 40 years, the City of Eureka, Missouri, which is located along the Meramec River, has endured seven major flooding events. The last two floods had the highest crests on record and caused more than $10 million in damages.
Officials have spent the past three years working to come up with a flood mitigation plan, and now it is in the final stages, pending approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The plan is to build two flood walls, one a half mile from the Meramec River, and the other approximately 1.5 miles from the river. Eureka Mayor Sean Flower says that the flood walls will protect the sewage plant, Highway 109 and the historic old town region. Flooding will be allowed to occur where it doesn't cause damage........

Recently, Boat Trader announced that they were launching a new video series on YouTube entitled Stomping Grounds, which takes a look at the nation's waterways and the boating towns that line them.
Boat Trader has released the official trailer as well as the first full length episode. The first stop Stomping Grounds made is at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where the crew met a group called the "Tin Boat Mafia".
The series will look at the unique cultures, histories and traditions of the boating towns along the waterways, and show the diversity of life on the water. New content will be released each month.......

Next month, Wisconsin and Minnesota fisheries crews will be attempting a new technique to remove Asian carp from the Mississippi River near Lacrosse, Wisconsin.
This new technique, called the modified unified method, combines herding and netting techniques which drive and concentrate fish from a large area to a smaller zone for removal.
The fisheries crews will be focusing on catching bighead, grass and silver carp, as they are non-native species that have caused problems in the Illinois, Missouri and Ohio River systems........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer Yamaha Marine Unveiled New V MAX SHO........
Yamaha Marine recently introduced some new products, including the upgraded 4.2 liter V MAX SHO outboard, which boasts an increased charging capacity, jumping from 50 to 70 amps.
According to Ben Speciale, president, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit, the V MAX SHO was the first outboard to prove that a four stroke outboard could be as lightweight and powerful as a two stroke outboard.
The V MAX SHO is available in 200, 225 and 250 prop-shaft horsepower ratings, and some models are available with a 25 inch shaft. These outboards are suitable for a variety of fresh and saltwater applications........

For nearly 50 years, R. Eugene Turner has been studying the effects of river diversions and other engineered solutions to Louisiana's disappearing coastal wetlands.
Currently, he states that the nearly $2 billion Mid-Barataria Bay Sediment Diversion project along the Lower Mississippi River will destroy more wetlands than it will create.
Advocates of the Mid-Barataria Bay Sediment Project say that the Mississippi River will deposit the needed sediment and fresh water into wetland-starved areas that create the last line of defense against storm surges........

Mississippi River Welch, Minnesota The 2021 Navigation Season Has Begun........
On March 19, 2021, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District reported that the 2021 navigation season along the Mississippi River had opened with the passage of the M/V R. Clayton McWhorter through Lock and Dam No.3 near Welch, Minnesota.
Several news outlets picked up on and reported the announcement, however, it will not be a complete opening of the navigation season until repair work it completed at Lock and Dam No.25 at Winfield, Missouri.
The navigation season is considered to be open when the first tow from St. Louis or below passes through all of the Upper Mississippi RIver Locks and Lake Pepin, reaching the Twin Cities. The M/V R. Clayton McWhorter originated from the Quad Cities........

Added Sunday Boat Show News The Palm Beach International Boat Show Was This Weekend.........
This weekend was the Palm Beach International Boat Show, and the turnout for the show has been higher than was expected. According to Kyle Langbehn, president of retail operations for MarineMax, it seemed like a record number of people attended the Thursday opening of the show.
Frank Ferraro, marketing manager for Nautical Ventures Group says that in all of his time attending the show, it was busier than he had ever seen. He added that the attendees were active boaters intent on finding their next boat.
Show organizers had their AllSecure health and safety protocols in place. Attendees had their temperatures taken prior to being allowed into the show and masks were required........

Illinois Fishing News Legislators Consider New Fishing Tax To Fight Asian Carp........
On top of Illinois' existing stamp, legislators are considering adding another fee for anglers wishing to fish in Illinois waters. This fee would go towards efforts to combat the invasive Asian carp.
On Monday, legislators in the House Agriculture and Conservation committee forwarded House Bill 2744 to the floor for consideration after approving it along party lines. Republicans on the committee rejected the proposal due to the extra cost imposed on anglers.
If the bill is enacted, it would implement the aquatic conservation stamp, which is a $5 stamp that anglers must purchase before legally fishing within the state's waters. The program would go live in 2022........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Coal Terminal Shutting Down........
An important rail-to-barge transloading facility along the Mississippi River at St. Louis is closing down after being in operation since 1979, marking the latest sign of the decline of the coal era in U.S. power generation.
Located just north of St. Louis, along the right descending bank, across from the lower exit to the Chain of Rocks Canal, the Hall Street facility is the terminus of the shortest rail connection from the Powder River Basin coal fields in Montana to the northernmost year-round ice and lock free port along the Mississippi River.
The facility had provided customers in Louisiana with cleaner, low sulfur Powder River Basin coal since 1979. The terminal facility is set to close in April........

Boat Sales Demand For New Boats Remains High........
According to Statistical Surveys, the preliminary data from around half of the U.S. boat market reveals that February's registration numbers continued to increase with little signs of tapering off.
During February, registrations in 29 states, representing 56 percent of the U.S. boating market, were up by 16 percent in the main powerboat categories and 19 percent on a year-over-year basis.
Ryan Kloppe, sales director for Statistical Surveys says that they are seeing that there is still high demand, so as long as builders keep manufacturing boats, there are people to buy them........

Boat Manufacturer BRP Investing $300 Million To Electrify Their Fleet........
BRP recently announced that they will be investing $300 million over the next five years in an effort to introduce electric power across the company's lineup, including the Sea-Doo personal watercraft.
BRP will be dividing the work into two areas, energy and torque development. In Canada, BRP will form an Electric Vehicle Development Center, where they will integrate the charger and battery pack into the vehicles.
A facility in Austria will be working on developing an inverter and electric motors. The Rotax electric power unit aboard the BRP Sonic E-Kart was conceived and constructed........

Missouri Waterways Mo. Legislators Urge EPA To Reconsider Impaired Waterway Designations........
Back in November, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency listed 40 Missouri lakes and reservoirs as "impaired". The list includes the Lake of the Ozarks and the Truman Reservoir.
Eight members of Missouri's congressional delegation have called upon the EPA to reconsider the designation. This week, Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer and Vicky Hartzler sent a letter signed by the other delegation members to Acting EPA Region 7 Administrator Edward H. Chu requesting reconsideration.
The letter states that the impaired designation will cause considerable effects for families, small businesses, landowners as well as the state's economy........

Illinois River At Grafton, Illinois Pere Marquette Campgrounds To Reopen Next Month........
The popular campground at Pere Marquette State Park will remain closed for a short time longer. The campground near Grafton had closed on February 1, 2020 for renovations.
The renovations to the campground included making updates to electrical services, water lines, camp site pads and roadway repairs. According to Chris Hespen, the greatest improvements will be for those traveling with larger RVs.
Officials say that even though there are a few odds and ends to wrap up, the campground at Pere Marquette State Park is scheduled to reopen on April 15th........

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri Authorities Removed Floating Anhydrous Ammonia Tank From The River........
Last week, there was an anhydrous ammonia tank bobbing in the Missouri River near the State Capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri. Officials consider floating tanks to be dangerous, son the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources called upon the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for assistance in removing the fertilizer tank.
The Missouri River was at flood stage last Friday, so crews would wait for more favorable conditions on Saturday to remove the tank. In the meantime, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Jefferson City Fire Department's boat division secured the tank in the river and verified it was not leaking.
On Saturday, the team was able to tow the tank and it's wheeled chassis back to land. The tank is being stored at the Missouri Farmer's Association's Jefferson City facility while the agency and the state of Missouri try to determine who owns the tank........

Missouri Department of Natural Resources Anglers Advised To Dispose Of Fish Waste Responsibly.......
The Missouri Department of Conservation is calling on the public to make sire to properly dispose of fish waste created when cleaning fish. Each year, the MDC gets complaints about fish-cleaning along the shoreline, especially during paddlefish snagging season.
Anglers may use trash receptacles to dispose of fish cleaning waste, or it can be thrown back into the river. It should not be piled near the water's edge, but rather in deeper water or in the flowing part of the system.
There are daily possession limits on most fish species and disposing of an entire fish is nor only wasteful, but a violation of the Wildlife Code. Entire fish may not be tossed onto a bank of back in the water. Anglers fishing in Missouri waterways should have a plan for using fish they keep........

Mississippi River Near the Alton Marina Alton Farmers' & Artisans' Market Opening May 8........
When the Alton Farmers' and Artisans' Market reopens on May 8th, it will be sort of a return to normal. The Alton City Council recently agreed to allow the Alton Main Street organization to use the Henry St. parking lot at Landmarks Boulevard near the Alton Marina for the event.
The Alton Farmers' and Artisans' Market will be running from the beginning of May through October. While it was a drive-through only affair last year, this year, it will return to a walk-through format.
Throughout the season, there will be a variety of entertainment, including live music on the first Saturday of each month, educational programming and the ever-popular Canine Carnival........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Hosted Their Annual Water Festival........
The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center recently held their annual Water Festival and World Water Day Photo Contest which celebrated the United Nations World Water Day, March 22.
The virtually formatted festival was held on March 22 and 23, and included about 15 teachers and 375 students from five area schools. The NGRREC and the Swarovski Waterschool held a student photography contest, whose theme was What Does Water Mean To You?.
The NGRREC was founded in 2002 and is dedicated to the study of great river systems and the communities that utilize them. The center's goal is to be a leader in scholarly research, education and outreach focused on the relationships between rivers, floodplains, watersheds and the local communities........

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri Official: Flood Outlook Is The Best In Years........
This past weekend, the Missouri River at Washington crested at 24.57 feet, compared to the forecasted crest of 28.5 feet. As a result, Washington officials are saying that the first flood of the season had little to no effect in the city. Flood stage is 21 feet.
The National Weather Service's Spring Flood Outlook for the Missouri River between Jefferson City and it's confluence with the Mississippi River in St. Louis is indicating that minor flooding is possible along the river, and a near-normal risk of flooding for most local streams.
At Washington, there is a 13-14 percent chance of moderate flooding, defined by water levels exceeding 28 feet, and a 10 percent chance of major flooding, leaving officials to say that this is the best flood outlook the city has had in years........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Corps Closed Maple Island, Low Water Access Area........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rivers Project Office has announced that they will be temporarily closing Maple Island in West Alton, Missouri, as well as the Low Water Access Area on Chouteau Island to all anglers, pedestrians and vehicles due to high water.
These project areas will be reopening after the river levels fall. Officials say that they will reopen the recreational areas when they become accessible again........

Boat Manufacturer White River Marine Opened New Tracker Plant........
White River Marine Group, Bass Pro Shop's marine manufacturing division, has expanded their Bolivar, Mississippi manufacturing facility, which will effectively double the production of Tracker's popular Sun Tracker pontoon boats.
Production at the expanded facility began earlier in the month, with Bass Buggy pontoons rolling off of the assembly line. When the facility reached full capacity later in the summer, up to 250 jobs will have been created.
Bass Pro Shops founder, Johnny Morris says that they are pleased to continue to showcase the skill and craftsmanship of the of their team members........

YesterYears Picture on this day in 2016---- were taken at Port Charles Marina
Captain Tim was at it again. Tim and Barnacle Bill had just finished a 23 day build of a new custom Shark Boat for a tour company based in San Diego, Ca. The new boat was to be used to give shark rides on Mission Bay.
Underneath all the "Shark" fiberglass is a 22 foot Tahoe deck boat that provides a lot of room for site seeing passengers.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri Work Continues On Riverfront Project........
While the major construction work on the Hannibal riverfront restoration project has been complete for a few months now, there are still plenty of minor odds and ends to be completed.
Andy Dorian, the city's director of central services says that the project is a work in progress each week, and that people are already starting to the use the riverfront. He adds that there have been inquiries about renting the riverfront.
While the riverfront isn't ready for rental, boat slips are being rented out. Dorian says that they have rented out multiple boat slips. He notes that the slip rental process has changed a bit........

Alton Riverfront Park Pool 26 of the Mississippi River Officials Break Ground On Splash Pad........
On Monday, Alton officials were joined by officials with the American Water Charitable Association Foundation, the National Recreation and Park Association and Illinois American Water to hold a brief groundbreaking ceremony for Alton's new splash pad;
Alton Mayor thanked AWCF, American Water and the NRPA for their support on the project, which was made possible through a $250,000 Building Better Communities grant.
The City of Alton received additional financial support via the Tax Increment Financing program, which will aid in the construction of concessions and restroom facilities at the splash pad/amphitheater location........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri Cape Closes Flood Gates As River Rises........
The Cape Girardeau Public Works crews closed the town's flood gates as the levels of the Mississippi River rise. The Mississippi RIver was at moderate flood stage at 36.6 feet.
According to Stan Polivick, City of Cape Girardeau Public Works Director, they were concerned that there could be issues with the rainfall that was in the forecast.
The Mississippi River at Cape was 5.1 feet above flood stage, is expected to keep rising until Thursday, when the river levels will begin to fall. The river is expected to fall below flood stage late Thursday into early Friday........

Missouri Fishing News Jefferson County Woman Catches Record Yellow Perch........
On March 7th, Sharon Christopher of Cedar Hill, Missouri earned some serious angling bragging rights by setting a new Missouri State record when she reeled in a 2 pound, 7 ounce yellow perch on Bull Shoals Lake.
The Missouri State Department of Conservation weighed Christopher's catch on a certified scale at their Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery in Branson. The perch is the first state record of 2021.
Christopher's catch broke the previous state record for yellow perch, which was caught in January 2020 and weighed in at 2 pounds, 3 ounces. That fish was caught on Bull Shoals Lake as well........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois City is Planning Fireworks Shows........
The City of Grafton, Illinois has announced that they will be hosting fireworks along the riverfront, possibly several times this year. Fireworks in Grafton have been held along the riverfront for years.
Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the city council has approved a contract for this year's July 4th fireworks display, which will be held on July 2vnd. He adds that the July 2nd fireworks show isn't the only one in the works.
The Grafton city council recently approved a contract with Fireworks Authority that takes advantage of a few discounts, which locks in a price of just over $7,100 for three years for the Independence Day Shows........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri MO. History Museum Exhibit Focused On River's Importance........
The Missouri History Museum in Forest Park is hosting a 6,000 square foot exhibit that looks back through the history of St. Louis and how important the Mississippi River has been to the region.
The Mighty Mississippi display, which opened back in November 2019, is scheduled to close on June 6, 2021. THe exhibit not only has contemporary artifacts such as a pilot house, but also items over 1,000 years old.
David Lobbig, curator of environmental life for the Missouri Historical Society says that there are more than 200 artifacts in the exhibit that have never been seen, some of which go back to the Mississippian culture, the people that built the Cahokia Mounds.........

Mississippi River Near Grand Tower, Illinois FEMA Denies Grand Tower Funding Following Floods........
The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently denied the town of Grand Tower, Illinois' request for a multi-million dollar grant to repair street damage that occurred during the 2019 floods. This leaves the city looking for alternative funding opportunities.
Along Front Street, just below the riverbank, in an area that saw considerable water damage during the flooding, are two sinkholes that opened up just after the flooding stopped.
According to Fire Chief Dennis Wright, the city had been working with FEMA to get the repair budget down for the street repairs. He adds that FEMA told the city that their claim had been denied because of preexisting conditions........

Kentucky Lake Research Project Tested Asian Carp Control Methods.........
Researchers recently conducted a research project in Kentucky Lake which was intended to determine how Asian carp responded to harvest methods, as well as to get a better understanding of the fish population.
U.S. Geological Survey supervisory fish biologist Duane Chapman says that the research project's focus isn't removing as much carp as possible, but rather how the fish react to being herded. The experiments involve herding stimuli and underwater sonar.
Chapman says that there were 12 researchers aboard five boats conducting the study. He adds that they were able to get good data on how the fish responded to being driven........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Riverboats At The Gateway Arch Hosting Clean-up........
Riverboats at the Gateway Arch recently partnered up with Great Rivers Greenway, Gateway Arch Park Foundation, Explore St. Louis, Gateway Arch National Park, Living Lands & Waters and Series Six Apparel to put together a community trash clean-up event on Saturday.
The Mississippi River is one of the larger sources of oceanic plastic debris. Participants were trained to collect data on plastic pollution along the Mississippi River, in partnership with the Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative.
Riverboats at the Gateway Arch Director of Operations Robert Hopkins says that the Mississippi River and the St. Louis Riverfront are defining features of out city, and they must be cared for to ensure they can be enjoyed for generations to come.......

River Destinations Missouri River At Washington, Missouri River Sirens Hotel Officially Opens April 1st........
On April 1, 2021, the River Sirens Hotel will begin welcoming guests following two years worth of planning and construction delays. Co-owner Lisa Greife says that she believes that they are opening at a good time, as people are ready to get out and about, even if it is for a staycation.
More than 200 people turned out for the boutique hotel's open house whose features include rooms decorated with the hotel's signature mermaid in a hip, modern design, keyless entry, large windows, with many offering a river view, king-sized beds, kitchenettes, waterfall showers and LED lighting that can change the color of the room.
Emily Underdown, Washington's director of tourism says that the hotel's opening indicates that the region is ready to recover from the year-long shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cassidy Lowery, events and promotion specialist with Downtown Washington, Inc. says that the new hotel will bring much needed lodging to downtown Washington........

Lower Mississippi River Mat Sinking Unit Wraps Up 2020 Season........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District recently announced that their Mat Sinking Unit has completed their 2020 revetment season as of March 4, 2020. The MSU was deployed for 230 days, which was the unit's second longest deployment in 25 years.
The MSU is made up of a mat sinking barge, a mat supply barge, quarter barges, spar barges, gantry cranes, crew boats and shore side bulldozers. The MSU kicked off it's season on July 1, 2020 with a virtual blessing of the fleet.
During its' season, the MSU laid approximately 266,000 concrete squares that are lashed together into massive mats which are places along the Mississippi River bottom at critical points to help protect the bank from scouring and erosion........

Training together with the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for
Boating Safety and Clean Water are offering an easy way to try
out recreational powerboating. Five courses, including “Intro to

Boat Handling,” “Women Making Waves,” and Women’s Precision
Docking and Boat Handling” are being held every weekend and
