Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois City is Planning Fireworks Shows........
The City of Grafton, Illinois has announced that they will be hosting fireworks along the riverfront, possibly several times this year. Fireworks in Grafton have been held along the riverfront for years.
Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says that the city council has approved a contract for this year's July 4th fireworks display, which will be held on July 2vnd. He adds that the July 2nd fireworks show isn't the only one in the works.
The Grafton city council recently approved a contract with Fireworks Authority that takes advantage of a few discounts, which locks in a price of just over $7,100 for three years for the Independence Day Shows........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri MO. History Museum Exhibit Focused On River's Importance........
The Missouri History Museum in Forest Park is hosting a 6,000 square foot exhibit that looks back through the history of St. Louis and how important the Mississippi River has been to the region.
The Mighty Mississippi display, which opened back in November 2019, is scheduled to close on June 6, 2021. THe exhibit not only has contemporary artifacts such as a pilot house, but also items over 1,000 years old.
David Lobbig, curator of environmental life for the Missouri Historical Society says that there are more than 200 artifacts in the exhibit that have never been seen, some of which go back to the Mississippian culture, the people that built the Cahokia Mounds.........

Mississippi River Near Grand Tower, Illinois FEMA Denies Grand Tower Funding Following Floods........
The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently denied the town of Grand Tower, Illinois' request for a multi-million dollar grant to repair street damage that occurred during the 2019 floods. This leaves the city looking for alternative funding opportunities.
Along Front Street, just below the riverbank, in an area that saw considerable water damage during the flooding, are two sinkholes that opened up just after the flooding stopped.
According to Fire Chief Dennis Wright, the city had been working with FEMA to get the repair budget down for the street repairs. He adds that FEMA told the city that their claim had been denied because of preexisting conditions........

Kentucky Lake Research Project Tested Asian Carp Control Methods.........
Researchers recently conducted a research project in Kentucky Lake which was intended to determine how Asian carp responded to harvest methods, as well as to get a better understanding of the fish population.
U.S. Geological Survey supervisory fish biologist Duane Chapman says that the research project's focus isn't removing as much carp as possible, but rather how the fish react to being herded. The experiments involve herding stimuli and underwater sonar.
Chapman says that there were 12 researchers aboard five boats conducting the study. He adds that they were able to get good data on how the fish responded to being driven........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri Riverboats At The Gateway Arch Hosting Clean-up........
Riverboats at the Gateway Arch recently partnered up with Great Rivers Greenway, Gateway Arch Park Foundation, Explore St. Louis, Gateway Arch National Park, Living Lands & Waters and Series Six Apparel to put together a community trash clean-up event on Saturday.
The Mississippi River is one of the larger sources of oceanic plastic debris. Participants were trained to collect data on plastic pollution along the Mississippi River, in partnership with the Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative.
Riverboats at the Gateway Arch Director of Operations Robert Hopkins says that the Mississippi River and the St. Louis Riverfront are defining features of out city, and they must be cared for to ensure they can be enjoyed for generations to come.......

River Destinations Missouri River At Washington, Missouri River Sirens Hotel Officially Opens April 1st........
On April 1, 2021, the River Sirens Hotel will begin welcoming guests following two years worth of planning and construction delays. Co-owner Lisa Greife says that she believes that they are opening at a good time, as people are ready to get out and about, even if it is for a staycation.
More than 200 people turned out for the boutique hotel's open house whose features include rooms decorated with the hotel's signature mermaid in a hip, modern design, keyless entry, large windows, with many offering a river view, king-sized beds, kitchenettes, waterfall showers and LED lighting that can change the color of the room.
Emily Underdown, Washington's director of tourism says that the hotel's opening indicates that the region is ready to recover from the year-long shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cassidy Lowery, events and promotion specialist with Downtown Washington, Inc. says that the new hotel will bring much needed lodging to downtown Washington........

Lower Mississippi River Mat Sinking Unit Wraps Up 2020 Season........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District recently announced that their Mat Sinking Unit has completed their 2020 revetment season as of March 4, 2020. The MSU was deployed for 230 days, which was the unit's second longest deployment in 25 years.
The MSU is made up of a mat sinking barge, a mat supply barge, quarter barges, spar barges, gantry cranes, crew boats and shore side bulldozers. The MSU kicked off it's season on July 1, 2020 with a virtual blessing of the fleet.
During its' season, the MSU laid approximately 266,000 concrete squares that are lashed together into massive mats which are places along the Mississippi River bottom at critical points to help protect the bank from scouring and erosion........

Added Sunday St. Louis Region Flood Outlook Flood Warnings Issued For St. Louis Area Waterways........
The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for the Missouri River for several towns, including Chamois, Hermann, Washington and St. Charles. AS of 9 am Saturday, the Missouri River was more than 3.5 feet above flood stage. It is expected to fall below flood stage of 25 feet by late Sunday.
The Meramec River is forecasted to rise over 6 feet above flood stage at Arnold by Sunday evening.
The NWS has issued minor flood warnings for the Mississippi River at several locations between Hannibal and Chester, Illinois.
In most places, the Mississippi River is expected to rise 2 to 3 feet. Cape Girardeau is expected to see the worst of the flooding, as the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 6 feet above flood stage on Tuesday morning.
There is slight flooding along the Illinois River at Hardin........

Added Sunday Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Alton Lock and Dam Still Closed Following Barge Strike........
On Saturday, the Melvin Price Locks and Dam along the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois remained closed to barge traffic following a barge strike that occurred on Friday afternoon.
Reportedly, the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted at around 1 pm Friday that 15 barges broke free from their towboat, and seven struck the lock and dam. While most of the barges were corralled, two barges got stuck in the lock.
On Friday evening, inspectors were assessing damage to the lock and dam facility. As of Saturday, there was no information released on the extent of damage sustained by the lock and dam........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana Towboat Catches Fire.... Crew Escape To Safety....
Early Wednesday morning, a towboat caught fire in the Mississippi River along East Baton Rouge Parish, forcing the seven crew members to abandon ship.
According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's office, the towboat was completely engulfed in flames near Profit Island. All aboard the vessel were able to escape to safety aboard another vessel.
Local EBR Deputies and Firefighters responded to the boat fire. It is unclear what caused the fire, however, the U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the caused of the blaze........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois Crews Checking Dam After Barge Strike........
Friday evening, crews were inspecting the Melvin Price Locks and Dam for damage after a tow struck the dam, setting barges adrift along the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois.
After striking the dam, all 15 barges broke free of the tow. Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard stated that seven barges ended up hitting the dam structure, while the remaining eight barges were rounded up by other tows. THere were no reports of pollution to the river.
There was some damage done to the dam facilities and inspectors are trying to determine how bad the damage is. It is not certain how long the delays will last along the river........

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri Region Rethinking River Management After Repeated Flooding........
Eureka is reconsidering their flood management practices in a way they never have before. The city, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are studying about a dozen strategic options, from the construction of levees and walls, the buyouts of high-risk properties, to restoring flood plains as water storage.
The flooding solutions under consideration in Eureka offer a glimpse at the ways towns are rethinking their associations with local rivers. The long-standing practices of building levees and developing flood plains are coming under scrutiny about their compatibility with severe flooding.
Jon Remo, a Southern Illinois University Carbondale professor that specializes in flood and river management says that the towns along the Meramec River have to decide what they are going to do if they keep getting repeatedly flooded. Remo adds that the relationship with rivers must be reconsidered, as well as the thinking on how to deal with future flooding........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri With The River Rising, Floodgates Are Closed ........
Heavy rainfall within the Upper and Middle Mississippi River Basin, coupled with snow and ice melt upstream has caused some minor flooding along the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
As of Friday morning, the Mississippi River had risen to the 32 foot flood stage prompting crews with the Cape Girardeau Public Works Department to install the downtown flood gate at Themis Street and activate the city's pumping stations.
THe National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky is forecasting that the Mississippi River will crest around 38 feet on Tuesday. While thins crest is six feet higher than flood stage, it is still 10 feet shi of the record crest of 48.86 feet set on January 2, 2016........

Rivers Of The St. Louis Region Multiple Flood Warnings Following Waves Of Rain........
Following the recent periods of rainfall over the past week, the creeks, rivers and streams in the St. Louis region are running high, and as a result, there have been several flood warnings issued.
On Friday evening, the Missouri River is forecasted to crest just over six feet above flood stage. The Missouri River at Hermann is expected to crest around eight feet above flood stage.
In Troy and Old Monroe, the Cuivre River is experiencing moderate flooding. In Troy, the river will be falling Friday, but it will crest late Friday into Saturday at Old Monroe. The Cuivre River will remain high into next week due to backwater from the Mississippi RIver........

Missouri River Near Washington, Missouri Flooding Expected Over The Weekend........
According to the National Weather Service's Records, Washington, Missouri may be in for the 30th worst flood in the city's history this weekend. NWS officials have termed the forecasted flood as moderate flooding.
On Saturday afternoon, the Missouri River is predicted to crest at 25.6 feet, which would tie with the flooding Washington endured in April 1960. The worst flood recorded at Washington occurred in July 1993, when the Missouri River crested at 35.40 feet. Flood stage is 20 feet.
More flooding along the Missouri River is forecasted to occur in Hermann, Missouri. Flood stage in Hermann is 21 feet. The Missouri River is expected to crest at around noon on Saturday at 28.5 feet........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri Flood Warnings Issued For Cape, Perry & Scott Counties........
The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky recently issued a flood warning for Cape Girardeau, Perry and Scott Counties in Missouri, effective as of 12:17 pm Thursday and running through 8:13 pm Saturday, March 27th.
As of noon on Thursday, the Mississippi River measured at 30.9 feet at Cape Girardeau, just over a foot shy of the 32 foot flood stage. The Mississippi River is forecasted to rise above flood stage Friday, and crest at 38 feet on Tuesday.
If the Mississippi River rises to 38 feet, crews will close the Broadway Street flood gate.........

Anyone that has taken a spin along the Great River Road just outside of Alton has seen a huge painting of the Piasa Bird along the bluff. Even though this Piasa Bird was painted in 1998, there is a considerable amount of history and legend surrounding the Piasa Bird. Mark Twain Lake The Elevation Is Expected To Rise.......
Throughout the month of March, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expecting that the elevation of Mark Twain Lake will rise. Mark Twain Lake's elevation is currently 609.79, and is forecasted to crest at 612.40 on March 29th. This forecast considers predicted precipitation and the generation schedule.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff is calling on visitors to remain vigilant while on the lake and to avoid areas where they may encounter large amounts of debris.
The Corps staff is asking all visitors to the recreational area to follow posted signs in the area and to wear life jackets while out on the lake........

Missouri River Near Maryland Heights, Missouri Maryland Heights Will Appeal TIF Ruling........
The City of Maryland Heights has filed notice that they intend to appeal a judge's ruling on a case that affects possible development of a flood plain region along the Missouri River.
The issue is whether St. Louis County still has the legal authority to appoint members of a tax increment financing commission that is contemplating a request for up to $151 million in subsidies to aid development in the Howard Bend area.
Last week, St. Louis County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Albus ruled in favor of the county in a suit filed by Maryland Heights filed early last year after the city's TIF commission voted against authorizing the incentives, which allow for newly generated taxes from development to be reinvested in the project........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois State Awards $165K Grant For Confluence Trail........
Madison County Transit was recently awarded $165,000 to be put towards improvements to the Confluence Trail. This grant is one of seven totaling $885,300 announced by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker to assist communities in developing and improving bike path facilities.
The Madison County project will use the grant for a half-mile trail improvement that starts near the western end of the pedestrian bridge at Wood River.
The existing Confluence Trail is 22.9 miles long, and begins at the McKinley Bridge in Venice and heads north along the Mississippi River to Russell Commons Park in Alton. The tail is 10 feet wide and is paved with asphalt or gravel surfaced........

Missouri River at Washington, Missouri Missouri River Flooding Expected This Weekend........
The National Weather Service has announced that Washington, Missouri will be seeing moderate flooding along the Missouri River this weekend, which is expected to crest at 25.6 feet Saturday afternoon.
According to National Weather Service records Saturday's crest would tie with the flooding the city saw in April, 1980, which was the city's 30th worst flood in the city's history.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the river level was at 14.78 feet. Washington's flood stage in 20 feet. The city's worst flood was in July 1993, when the Missouri River rose to 35.40 feet........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana Crew Able To Escape Tugboat Fire........
Early Wednesday morning, a tugboat caught fire along the Mississippi River near East Baton Rouge Parish, forcing seven crewmembers to abandon the vessel. All crewmembers were able to escape to safety. Another boat was nearby and picked up the crew.
Local firefighters and East Baton Rouge deputies assisted on responding to the blaze. The U.S. Coast Guard is heading up the investigation into the incident. It is unclear what caused the vessel to catch fire........

Weaubleau Creek Near Collins, Missouri Man Tied To Another Man Drowned While Floating On Air Mattress........
Officials report that on Monday evening, 21 year old Bradley Dill drowned after floating down Weaubleau Creek near Collins, Missouri aboard an air mattress.
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office reports that Dill and a friend were tied together at the wrists and floating on the makeshift raft when they headed towards the rapids. Upon reaching the rapids, Dill fell off the raft and into the water.
Dill's friend pulled him through the heavy current and was able to get to the creek's bank. First responders performed CPR on Dill, who was sot responsive........

Mississippi River At West Alton, Missouri Responders Investigating Vehicle Found In The River........
Tuesday night, several fire and rescue agencies joined the St. Charles County Police and Alton Police in West Alton, Missouri after a vehicle was spotted submerged in the Mississippi River.
The vehicle was discovered in the river, approximately halfway between the Melvin Price Lock and Dam and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offices off of U.S. 67 on Riverlands Way Drive.
According to Val Joiner, spokesperson for the St. Charles County Police Department, a single vehicle was discovered and removed from the Mississippi River. She noted that the vehicle was unoccupied........

Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois Quincy Memorial Bridge To Close For Repair Work........
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, on April 1, the Quincy Memorial Bridge will be closing down for repair work. The project will run through November. Two way traffic will continue on the Bayview Bridge during the closure.
The $7.25 million project will involve resurfacing the bridge deck, joint replacement and repairs, painting, structural steel repairs, lighting replacement and other miscellaneous tasks.
There has been discussion about the eventual construction of a new bridge and the demolition of the Quincy Memorial Bridge as part of the Quincy Riverfront Master Plan, and IDOT will be seeking input at a public meeting to be held later this year........

Mark Twain Lake The South Fork Recreation Area Closing Temporarily........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that beginning on Monday, March 22, the South Fork Recreation Area at Mark Twain Lake will be closing the public.
The recreation area will be closed approximately 2 weeks so that Corps crews can use the boat ramp as a staging area to mobilize and assemble transport and work barge units and stage heavy equipment in preparation for erosion and protection work in the area.
Once the mobilization is finished up and crews no longer need the boat ramp to stage equipment, the recreation area will reopen for public use........

Upper Missouri River The Missouri River Reservoirs Are Ready For Floodwater Storage........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has the Upper Missouri River Reservoirs prepared for the spring runoff season. According to Mike Swenson with the Corps' office in Omaha, the reservoirs have arrived at their storage levels./
Swenson says that they are only anticipating that Lake Oahe will see minor pool level increases this spring. He adds that the Corps will soon begin increasing flows from the Gavins Point Dam.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expecting that the overall runoff into the Missouri River System will be roughly eighty percent of normal for this year........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana The Mississippi River Spring rise Is Coming........
The Mississippi River is on the way up near New Orleans, which is fairly normal this time of year, as snow is melting in the north and water from heavy rain fall is slowly making it's way downstream.
There are flood warnings around Baton Rouge towards points north as the Mississippi River is now rising to levels not seen since last spring when the Bonnet Carre Spillway was in operation.
AS of Saturday, the Mississippi River was at 12 feet, with a crest of around 13 feet within the next two weeks. The river is expected to fall again by April 1st, dependant upon more rainfall........

Lake Of The Ozarks LOTO Levels Rose After Recent Rainfall........
Thanks to the recent heavy rainfall, the Lake is starting to rise from it's extremely low levels. Even though the dam was flowing a considerable amount of water, the lake levels rose by a foot over the weekend.
Ameren, operator of the Bagnell Dam has been running the dam between 27,000 and 28,000 cubic feet per second since Saturday afternoon. The dam's electric generators can operate at a maximum of up to 50,000 cfs.
The lake level, as of Monday morning, was at an elevation of 654.59 feet, up from 653.63 on Friday morning. Ameren's guide curve puts the lake around 654 feet from mid-February until April 1, when Amren allows spring rainfall to fill the lake in time for the summer boating season in mid May........

Missouri River Near Maryland Heights, Missouri Improved Flood Plain Policies Taking Root In Missouri........
The Missouri Senate recently passed Senate Bill 22, sponsored by Senator Andrew Koenig, R-Manchester, which would make the use of tax-increment financing to subsidize flood plain development illegal across most of the state.
Koenig says that encouraging the use of tax dollars in flood plains is not good policy. He adds that if a developer wants to take the risk and build in a flood plain, they should be on the hook for all of the risk, and not the taxpayers.
SB22 still has to work it's way through the Missouri House and be signed by Governor Mike Parson to become law. The bill builds upon a previous bill passed by the Missouri legislature that allows countywide TIF commissions to weigh in on floodplain development proposals.........

Illinois River Near Grafton, Illinois Pere Marquette Wrapping Up Camping Site Upgrades........
While Pere Marquette State Park's camping facility had been closed for the majority of COVID-19 infected 2020, crews have been making $1.9 million in improvements to the park's 80 site camping facility.
Reservations for the camping facility are being accepted now. When the campground opens on April 15th, campers will be able to take advantage of the upgraded electrical and water service, improved camping pads and access and even an improved system of making reservations.
Campers have been utilizing the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' new online reservation system, which launched on March 1 and is considerably more user-friendly........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois Power Plant's Smokestacks Demolished Sunday........
On Sunday morning, the final vestiges of the former Dynegy power plant in East Alton were brought down with a series of explosions. The three remaining smokestacks at the Wood River Power Station, which was shuttered in 2016, were dropped around 7:43 am.
The 1950's-era coal fired power plant was located near the confluence of the Wood River and the Mississippi RIver. The site was purchased on September 13, 2019 by Commercial Liability Partners of St. Louis, who is planning environmental remediation prior to offering the site for redevelopment.
CLP says that the site will require remediation, groundwater monitoring, abatement and demolition of structures and coal ash ponds prior to being redeveloped. The company has managed cleanups of 10 similar properties in several states during the past five years........

Mississippi River At Moline, Illinois Portions Of The Old I-74 Bridge Disappearing........
Once a demolition contract for the twin spans of the old Interstate 74 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois has been chosen, it will be up to the winning bidder to determine how to remove and dispose of the bridge remains.
According to Danielle Alvarez, the project manager for the Iowa Department of Transportation, implosion is a potential demolition method, however, the use of high explosives in environmentally sensitive areas could be limited.
Currently, other contracted work is either completed or underway, including millions in demolition of parts of the old span's superstructure, which is all of the components above ground, and it's land-based support structures........

Ohio River Near Cave-In-Rock, Illinois The Cave-In-Rock Ferry Has Reopened........
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that the Cave-In-Rock Ferry reopened for service at 8 am Sunday, March 14th. The ferry had been temporarily closed at 6 pm on Friday, March 5th because of rising floodwaters.
Saturday night into Sunday morning, the floodwaters receded enough that KYTC Crittenden County Highway Maintenance Crews were able to remove debris from the roadway and check it for erosion.
The Cave-In-Rock ferry carries traffic over the Ohio River between KY91 in Crittenden County, Kentucky and Illinois Route 1 in Hardin County, Illinois........

Added Sunday Missouri River Management Drought Conditions Could Affect River Management........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that due to the prolonged drought conditions, they may need to consider water conservation measures later this year within the Missouri River Basin.
John Remus, chief of the Missouri River Basin water management division in Omaha, Nebraska says that currently, the Corps does not anticipate the need to take such actions.
In comparison with the 2019 flooding, the majority of the Missouri River Basin is currently classified as abnormally dry or in moderate or even severe drought. The latest Spring Outlook forecasts slightly drier than normal conditions along much of the Missouri River Basin........

The Chicago River was dyed green Saturday as Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot reversed an earlier decision not to dye the river for the 2nd year due to the COVID-19 breakout.
Around 7 am Saturday morning, crews in boats began to dump dye into the Chicago River after being given the go-ahead prior to St. Patrick's Day.
Last year, Lightfoot had pulled the plug on the city's 2020 river dyeing and parades just days before they were to take place during the early days of the COVID outbreak........

Added Sunday Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota Corps Having Trouble Giving Away A Lock And Dam........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking to unload the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Corps closed the Lock and Dam to barge traffic seven years ago to prevent the upstream advance of the Asian Carp.
So far, there are no takers interested in taking over the Lock and Dam, as it's ownership will involve maintaining a sizable structure that will require maintenance in perpetuity.
On top of the Lock and Dam's historical significance, the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam system still is a crucial component in not only the city's drinking water supply, but also in flood prevention and power generation.........

Added Sunday Mississippi RIver Near Alton, Illinois Berm Highway Closures Extended For Smokestack Demolition........
Officials have changed the amount of time that a portion of the Berm Highway will shut down for the demolition of the smokestacks at the former Dynegy power plant site.
Due to factors such as wind speed and direction, the Berm Highway will now be closed from 9 am Saturday through possibly as late as 5 pm Sunday evening between Enviro Way and Locks and Dam Way.
The smokestacks will be brought down sometime between 7 am and 11 am Sunday morning. East Alton Fire Chief Tim Quigley says that the demolition crew decided that a four-hour window would increase the likelihood of a successful demolition........

Missouri River At Kansas City, Missouri Home To One Of The Highest Bridges In The Nation........
While many bridges are simple, utilitarian structures, there are plenty that quite beautiful, including the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York Coty, and St. Louis' very own Eads Bridge and the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge just upstream.
Another stand-out bridge is located in Kansas City, Missouri, the six-lane Christopher S. Bond Bridge. The Bond Bridge is not only aesthetically pleasing, it is the tallest bridge in the state.
The cable-stayed bridge stands at 314 feet high and 1,716 feet long. The Bond Bridge is also very busy, as it carries over 100,000 motorists across the Missouri River each day........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana Phase I Flood Fight Triggered By Rising River........
The Carrolton Gauge near Lower Mississippi River Mile Marker 103 rising past 11 feet, the New Orleans Engineer District has announced that they have begun Phase I of their flood fight operations.
Once the Mississippi River rises above 11 feet on the Carrollton gauge, the Corps, in cooperation with the local levee districts, starts twice-weekly levee patrols.
The National Weather Service is forecasting that the Mississippi River at New Orleans will crest around 13 feet on or around Thursday, March 18th, then start to drop a week later........

Spring Flooding Outlook
On Wednesday, the National Weather Service released their Spring Flood and Water Resources Outlook which states that only minor flooding is expected this spring in the Riverbend region.
The report says that minor flooding is expected along the Mississippi. Missouri and Illinois Rivers, but the odds of major flooding in Alton or Grafton are projected to be below 5 percent. Officials say that local streams are at a near normal risk of flooding this spring.
The NWS says that the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are seeing near-normal stream flow for this time of year, however, the streamflow for the Missouri River is below normal........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri The Eads Bridge Is The Oldest Bridge Over The Mississippi RIver Still In Use.........
Prior to the completion of the Gateway Arch in 1965, the Eads Bridge spanning the Mississippi River was the City of St. Louis' landmark. The span was dedicated on Independence Day, 1874.
When James Buchanan Eads designed and built his namesake bridge, he had never built one before. Eads' innovative genius allowed him to build a bridge that was able to accommodate the size and strength of the Mississippi River.
THere were plenty of "firsts: encountered during the span's construction. It was the world's first steel truss bridge, and it's support piers went more than 100 feet below the water's surface........

Mississippi River Near Wood River, Illinois Sunday's Smokestack Demolition Window Has Been Expanded..........
The scheduling for planned demolition of the former Dynegy power plant's smokestacks on Sunday has been changed. According to East Alton Fire Chief Tim Quigley, a contingency plan was ordered due to high winds expected on Sunday.
Originally, the smokestacks were to be demolished at 8 am Sunday morning, however, the contingency plan is now projecting a four hour window for the demolition, between 7 am and 11 am Sunday.
Quigley says that the smokestack demolition is still slated for 8 am, but the actual demolition will depend upon wind speed and direction. Quigley adds that it is in Mother Nature's hands now........

Mississippi River History A Look Back At The Day McDonald's Opened On The Riverfront........
The world's first floating McDonald's restaurant opened along the St. Louis riverfront on March 11, 1980. It was a landmark on the riverfront for some 20 years prior to closing in 2000 for business reasons.
The floating McDonald's took the form of a 19th century riverboat, a stationary sidewheeler, complete with smokestacks. It was built on a former cement barge, had seating for 134 people inside and another 200 on the open air decks.
The boat weighed in at 702 tons and measured over 185 feet in length and 50 feet to the top of the twin smokestacks. The floating McDonalds was owned by Dr. Benjamin H. Davis Sr., who also owned three other local McDonald's locations........

Great River Road Near Wood River, Illinois Power Plant Stacks To Be Dropped Sunday........
The landmark smokestacks are all that remain of the former Wood River Power Plant, however, time is running out for them as well. The walkway and conveyor over the Berm Highway will he removed on Saturday and the smokestacks are set to be imploded at 8 am Sunday.
The demolition work means that the Berm Highway will have to be shut down in both directions. The closure will be from 9 am Saturday through 9am Sunday.
The former Dynegy Power Plant property is being remediated and cleaned up by Liability Partners of St. Louis. Their intentions are to draw new development into the region........

Mississippi River Near Dyersburg, Tennessee 2 Barges Strick Bridge, Partially Sink........
Two barges carrying corn partially sank and were being recovered several days after their tow struck a bridge that carries Interstate 155 over the Mississippi RIver near Dyersburg, Tennessee.
According to Matthew Babot, a public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi, the M/V Marty Baskerville was headed southbound around 8:50 am on February 26th when the 40 barge to struck the bridge, also known as the Caruthersville Bridge.
Several barges broke free from the tow, and the Marty Baskerville was assisted by several otjer vessels in rounding them up. THere were no injuries reported........

Lake Cumberland Corps Using A New Incinerator To Dispose Of Debris........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District recently began using a new floating barge fitted with a special incinerator to efficiently dispose of driftwood debris, logs and stumps.
Since October, the barge has been operating on Lake Cumberland, a reservoir of the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky,. The incinerator in equipped with an air curtain burner into which crew feeds debris.
According to Christian Stringer, master tender of the PRIDE of the Cumberland, they can burn anything that can be physically lifted and placed into the incinerator........

HIGHLANDS,
N.J., March 22, 2021 – If you have never tried getting behind
the wheel of a boat before, now is your time. Bridge Marina is
partnering with the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating
Safety and Clean Water to offer an easy way to try out
recreational powerboating. Two courses, “Intro to Boating” and
“Precision Docking and Boat Handling” will be held every Friday
afternoon in April from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Course details and

SPRINGFIELD,
Va., March 15, 2021 – There are new engine cutoff device wear
requirements for recreational boat operators as part of the
January 1, 2021, passage of National Defense Authorization Act
that included a U.S. Coast Guard Reauthorization. These devices,
commonly referred to as engine cutoff switches (ECOS), are
designed to prevent a boat-strike injury if an operator is
accidentally ejected overboard while underway.
