About the Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club

The Alton Water Ski Club was founded on August 23, 1955. They were well known around the St Louis/ Southern Illinois area and performed at many special events in the area under the name Midwest Water Ski Show Productions. The Club was formed with the purpose of promoting the sport and recreation of water skiing, water safety, good sportsmanship, aquatic events, kindred and similar sports, and good fellowship.

Over the years the Club grew acquiring riverfront property on the Great River Road, a popular scenic highway that follows the Mississippi River, just north of Alton, Illinois along with a parcel of land containing a clubhouse and storage garage directly across the highway from the riverfront location. The Club continued to grow acquiring a new twin 18’ Hydrodyne twin rig in the spring of 1976 as well as growing membership, topping out at 135 members. During its high point the Club was mostly known in the area for their yearly January 1st New Years Day ski under the Arch where they put up a 3 high pyramid in front of the Arch with all proceeds going to the charity of choice as well as shows on the St Louis riverfront as part of the July 4th celebration.... Lower Mississippi River

   Ports Clamoring For Dredging Funds........

The feds give the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers around $53 million annually for dredging operations, but close to $85 million is needed each year to keep the lower Mississippi River between the Gulf of Mexico and the state capitol of Baton Rouge.  On occasion, up to $100 million is needed to dredge this corridor.  At this time draft restrictions are in place that could make it difficult for America's agricultural and industrial producers to compete globally........

A typical day in the life....

People often ask us how we all live in our small boat or what we do all day long. Truly everyday is different, unique and full of adventure, seeing new places and making life about the journey we travel. Schooling takes up a good portion of the day and add cruising/traveling and normal everyday activities and the days fill up quickly. Here's a peak into the Negotiator and what an average day looks like for the Parrent family.

We all seem to eat cereal for breakfast when we anchor out. We don't have an inverter on-board so all electricity comes from the generator. We usually only turn it on in the evening

This particular day we started the engines up first thing to head to town to provision. Craig at the helm starting up the engines, turning on the electronics and leaving in a matter of minutes

Illinois Department of Conservation

    News Release......

IDNR Announces Results of Chicago Area Bait Shops

Inspections for Asian Carp
No Silver or Bighead carp eDNA detected

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) today announced results of eDNA sampling at 52 bait shops in nine northeast Illinois counties – sampling that is part of the effort to stop the spread of Asian carp. The sampling, which took place last February and March and again this past summer, included visual bait tank inspections and testing of 2-liter water samples that were taken.

“This Bait Shop Survey is another component of a sophisticated and effective multilevel strategy of monitoring and removal that IDNR is undertaking in this fight to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller.

The water samples were transferred to the University of Notre Dame, where they were filtered and analyzed for the presence of bighead and silver carp DNA. No Asian carp were observed during the bait shop visits and no bighead or silver carp DNA were found in the samples. A questionnaire filled out by bait shop owners or employees during the summer survey indicated minnows were purchased from local wholesalers and not captured from the wild.

“We appreciate the efforts of bait shop owners to work with us on this inspection effort. Their cooperation helps us achieve the overall goal of preventing the spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes,” said IDNR Assistant Director John Rogner

Surveys to assess the bait trade as a potential pathway for Asian carp to gain access to Chicago waterways and Lake Michigan will continue during the summer of 2011. Surveillance likely will include additional visits to area bait shop and local minnow suppliers.

Support for this surveillance effort was provided to the University of Notre Dame and the IDNR through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Bait shop sampling is part of the 2010 and 2011 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework, a multi-agency effort to keep Asian carp from developing self-sustaining populations in the Great Lakes.

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois

Dike Work To Be Done At Alton........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has attained a temporary work easement lease from the City of Alton to control water levels in the impound area.  The Corps is paying $1,400 for the easement.  The rock dikes near Russell Commons Park manages the under-seepage creeping under the levee running along the Mississippi River. Usually after under-seepage comes sand boils, which is caused by pressure on river side of the levee pushing water under the levee, and out the other side........

House Bill To Block E15 Spending........

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment to a federal spending bill that will prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from funding the implementation of a waiver on the rollout of E15 fuel.  The EPA had approved the use of E15 in 2001 and newer cars and light trucks.  Back in December, the National Marine Manufacturers Association filed suit against the EPA over it's decision........

Selling your vessel – 101

     Courtesy of Safe harbor Yachts

Today’s buyers want a deal. They want to purchase a near perfect boat for a used boat price. We are putting many boats under contract only to have the deals come apart at survey. The average price reduction for a pre-owned vessel 5 to 8 years old 35 to 45’ is about $20,000.00. Surveyors have gotten more technologically advanced due to the use of moisture meters and other modern equipment and buyers are pickier than ever. Below I have comprised a list of things that should be done when listing your vessel for sale. Your yacht will likely bring more money and there is a much better chance that it will go through a survey without a hefty price reduction for survey deficiencies or in the worst case scenario lose the deal.

1) Have a sellers survey performed. This will show you what a buyer is going to see when they survey the vessel. Then you can correct the items beforehand so they don’t show up on the buyers survey.
2) Remove all personal gear from the boat. Buyers want to purchase a boat that looks as though it has never been used. Any items that are not being sold with the vessel should be removed. Once a buyer sees that equipment they are going to expect it if they make an offer.
3) Exterior & Interior Detail! Don’t forget the engine room, and all bilge areas! After all of the mechanical repairs have been done and all services have been performed, have the boat detailed inside and out! If you want top dollar, the vessel has to be in top condition and that includes looking showroom new!

a. Have the hull-sides and topsides compounded and waxed! All metals should be polished and all isinglass should be polished.

4) Change all fluids & filters on the engines, transmissions and generators. With our humid environment even 6 month old oil will show high metal content that will raise red flags. This is one of the major deal killers. Northern climates don’t have the issues we do and most people don’t understand that our engines ingest salt air. That ingestion of salt air and high humidity causes oil sample reports to come back with high levels of iron, copper and lead. The oil labs generally do not make allowances for this and flag those samples as abnormal. Change the fluids so this does not become an issue.

a. Have the raw water heat exchanger systems cleaned (there are companies that can run an acid solution through the systems without disassembly – just as effective and less costly). During survey, the vessel will be run at WOT (wide open throttle) for several minutes to determine the condition of the cooling system. Even a two year old vessel that runs at normal temperature during cruising speeds may overheat at wide open throttle if the cooling systems have not been flushed recently.
b. Change the raw water impellers (there is nothing more frustrating that losing an impeller during a survey run). Impellers should normally be changed every season. Boats that sit for long periods of time are notorious for losing impellers during the WOT portion of the survey.
c. Change the coolant. Most surveyors will check the condition of the coolant with a meter. If it is older than two years, change it!
d. Replace all engine and hull zincs. Zincs should be checked monthly. When was the last time you checked yours?
e. Replace any suspect hoses and belts (blowing a hose during survey is another deal killer and could be dangerous for the survey that is in the engine room at the time!). If your engine or generator hoses or belts are older than three years and have more than 300 hours on them, it is likely time to replace them.
f. With gas engines a tune up should be performed: Spark plugs, wires, fuel filters, cap and rotor. Don’t forget having the fuel injectors cleaned!

1. Gasoline looses Octane over time. If the fuel is old, Octane booster should be added and tanks should be topped off with fresh fuel.

g. Diesel engines should also be tuned up: Injectors cleaned, valve lash adjustments made, fuel filters primary and secondary should be changed.

1. If your fuel is old or if you have algae in the fuel, a fuel cleaning service should be performed. (there are companies that come out and clean the fuel)
2. Diesel fuel looses C-tane over time. After the fuel is cleaned, C-tane boosters should be added and fresh fuel should be used to top off the tanks.

5) Batteries: Wet Cell Batteries in South Florida only have a useful life span of about 3 to 4 years. Gel Batteries may go 4 to 5 years before becoming weak. A surveyor will probably load test the batteries. If they are close to the life span, they will likely fail a load test. Better to replace them now than have it come up on survey.
6) If the bottom paint is older than 8 months, paint the bottom! (If the vessel is kept in the water, have it cleaned before the sea-trial). A fresh bottom job will allow the boat to run faster and looks better during the survey. Don’t forget to replace the hull zincs.
7) Props: Props are very important as they are what transfers the power from your engines to the water to propel the boat. An improperly pitched and balanced prop (or damaged) can cause a host of issues during a survey. They can cause vibrations which in turn can cause the vessel to make strange noises. An improperly pitched prop can overload an engine and cause it not to turn up RPM. In severe cases engine damage can occur by overloading the engines. When you hit an object or touch bottom with your props, they should be pulled and sent to a shop to be checked, repaired and balanced. What you may not know is that props can become imbalanced over time even if you never strike an object. If your props have not been reconditioned in more than 4 years, its time!
8) Empty, flush and treat the holding tank. Odors on a boat are another deal killer.
9) Flush the fresh water system in the boat, top off and treat. Stale fresh water can create tremendous odors whenever a toilet is flushed or a sink is turned on.
10) Acid bathe the Air-Conditioning systems and make sure they are topped off with refrigerant. Systems for boats that are kept in the water should be done annually. Lift kept boats should be done every two years.
11) Portlights (port holes) and deck hatches: Open all of the port lights and deck hatches. Clean and lubricate all of the gaskets. Then close them and adjust all of the dog latches so that there is even snug pressure on each one. This should be done at least once a year! Leaking portlights and hatches are a sign the vessel is not being cared for.
12) Take a good look at your vessel. Try and remove yourself from the equation and look at the vessel like you were the buyer. How does the paint look on all of the powder-coated fittings and fixtures? Is it cracked, bubbling or peeling off? It may be time to have it redone! How do the rubber boots on the switches look? What about the plastic speaker grills, handles, hailer horn and plastic vents? Are they turning yellow? What about gas pressurized struts that hold up hatches? Are they rusting? These are all items that can turn off a buyer. It gives the impression that the vessel is not being cared for.

While these repairs and maintenance items can be costly to do upfront, ignoring them will likely cause your vessel to bring a lower selling price and even then there is likely to be a large price reduction for these items at the time of the survey that is if you don’t lose the buyer altogether. Then the process will have to start again.

US Coast Guard News Release......

Coast Guard prepares for potential flooding, urges caution

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley is urging the public to exercise caution in anticipation of possible flooding throughout the Ohio River Valley.

The Coast Guard is working with the Army Corps of Engineers and local emergency response organizations to prepare for potential flooding in Kentucky and Jackson and Washington Counties in Indiana, which are under a flash-flood warning that was issued by the National Weather Service.

The Coast Guard has Disaster Assistance Response Teams on standby in the event that flooding in the area leaves citizens stranded by flood waters. DARTs use shallow-water boats and specialized equipment designed to rescue individuals stranded by flood waters and transport supplies.

"The Coast Guard takes these predictions of flooding very seriously," said Cmdr. Andrew Tucci, executive officer for Sector Ohio Valley. "We and our federal, state and local partners are ready to quickly respond to emergencies in the event of serious flooding."

The Coast Guard encourages the public to monitor local weather broadcasts for further information about potential flooding.

For information on how you can prepare for flooding and other emergencies, visit http://www.ready.gov/.

I took a couple of shot's from the old lock & dam site here in Alton. We are looking from the Illinois side to the Missouri side.
One day closer to spring.

Illinois River At Kampsville, Illinois

Kampsville Man Pulled From Sunken Vehicle........

22 February is National Tequila Day

It is said that that the margarita was invented in 1948 by socialite Margarita Sames during one a party at her hacienda in Acapulco .

She stirred tequila, Cointreau and lime juice together as a remedy for quenching a person's thirst on a hot, dusty afternoon.

Coast Guard investigates alcohol leak on barge in Ohio River

CINCINNATI -- The Coast Guard is responding to a report of an isopropyl alcohol leak from a barge in the Ohio River, Monday.

At about 5:30 a.m., the captain of the tug vessel Bridget Cauley notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley that alcohol was reportedly leaking from the top portion of a barge that the Bridget Cauley was pushing, spilling an unknown amount on to the deck of the barge, while transiting the river approximately five miles south of Cincinnati.

A pollution investigation team from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Cincinnati was dispatched to the scene.

A temporary patch placed over the hole was effective in securing the leak; however, the Bridget Cauley remains under a Captain of the Port order until a final repair is made.

The cause of the incident is under investigation

I asked the lady at the visitors center if the fort replica is located exactly where the actual fort was located or just somewhere close. She said that based on the accurate drawings by Clark, the replica is no more than 3 feet off.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2007-----  was from Captain Glen Sadowski who hails out of Woodland Marina.  The picture above is only a small portion of the panoramic he sent us.  Make sure to click on it to enlarge it.

Hello RiverBill,

This past Sunday morning, Steve Schulte called and asked if there were any eagles in the area. I told him that I would check and call him back.

I walked up to the point, overlooking the slough. There were eagles in the air, eagles in the trees, and eagles on the ice.

With binoculars in hand I scanned from left to right and counted 119. I'm sure I missed a few. I then scanned right to left, just to check my count. I counted 117.

I returned the call to "World renowned photographer and friend" Steve Schulte. A short while later he and his "River Dog Dad" Larry arrived.

We took a few photos and then healed out to check out some other nearby marinas. I have attached a photo that I took of some Ducks near the lower end of the slough. This was probably 5% of the ducks in the area.

If you haven't already, I'm sure you can be expecting some photos from Steve.

Regards,
Glenn

Dredging Funds May Come From Harbor Maintenance Trust........

Legislation proposed by a Louisiana congressman might offer the answer to the federal dredging budget shortfall, and the resulting shipping restrictions.  The bill, put forth by Representative Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, would open up the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund.  The $5.7 billion fund was generated by tax levied on imported goods, and was intended for dredging operations.  Unfortunately, the fund exists only on paper, as the revenues collected go into the general treasury, and get spent on other things........

Illinois Fishing Outlook........

Corps Reservoirs Look Good For Crappie........

Things are looking good for crappie fishermen this spring at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs located in Illinois.  Crappie fishing was superb in 2009, and in 2010, crappie fishing was even better, with fishermen catching their limits of fish, including fish up to 15 inches in length.  Thanks to the changes in the crappie fishing regulations intended to thin out the crappie population, anglers will be able to keep 10 fish 10 inches in length, plus an additional 5 fish smaller than 10 inches in length.........

Missouri Department of Conservation

Up to 8,000 anglers expected at trout park opener

JEFFERSON CITY–You can’t see it now, but a trout-fishing tide is rising. Missourians are rummaging around in basements and garages, patching waders, tying flies and checking fishing reels and lines. The wave will continue to swell throughout the remainder of February. When it breaks on March 1, Missouri’s four trout parks will be awash in anglers, and the anglers will be up to their bellybuttons in rainbow trout.

For more than 70 years, Missourians have made the late-winter pilgrimage to trout parks, where the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) stocks rainbow trout. Today, MDC stocks spring branches at Bennett Spring State Park (SP) near Lebanon, Montauk SP near Licking, Roaring River SP near Cassville and Maramec Spring Park near St. James.

The number of anglers present on opening day depends partly on weather, but it takes a major winter storm to make much of a dent in the throng at any of these destinations. The most important factor is what day of the week March 1 falls on in a particular year. Total attendance at all four parks has topped 14,000 in years past when the weather was good and the season opener fell on Saturday or Sunday.

MDC hatchery managers have 50 years of data on which to base predictions of angler turnout on any day throughout the catch-and-keep season March 1 through Oct. 31. This year, with a Tuesday opener, hatchery managers expect throngs of approximately 2,200 anglers at Bennett Spring, 2,000 at Montauk, 1,800 at Roaring River and 1,600 at Maramec Spring. If the March 1 weather forecast is unusually good, total attendance could top 8,400.

Miami Boat Show

The Miami Boat Show was a lot of fun! We toured the many many booths with Pete and Anna and spent the day visiting with exhibitors and gathering lot's of trinkets that we don't have room for (kids loved it too)! This picture is a very small fraction of the entire show

We always try to not anchor near peoples homes, but due to limited safe anchorages and no room at the marinas (due to boat show), we made an exception and stayed in Sunset Lake near South Beach area of Miami. It is completely protected and we knew it would only be for 2 nights. Sharing this anchorage with 12 other vessels and not being there all day long, it didn't seem to be a big deal. However, for two nights this beautiful home that belongs to man named Fred decided to harass us and fellow boaters. He shined his boats spot light into our windows and played the same rap song hundreds of times very loud to try and get us to leave with no avail.
