Plan H Update

    New Name For Flood Control Group........

A group that is against Plan H, a controversial plan to control flooding along the Mississippi River, has adopted a new name and purpose.  Neighbors on the Mississippi intends to unite those seeking improved flood control, but want to see it be equitable.  At this time, Plan H would raise the level levees along the Mississippi River, except 20 in the Missouri counties of Pike, Lincoln and St. Charles.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stated that alternatives to raising levees would be considered, but the needed studies would require more funding from Congress........

Eagle Watching

    Visitors Flock To The Riverbend For Eagles........

The Riverbend area around St. Louis, Missouri might be the best spot in the continental U.S. for eagle watching during a given year, but the area certainly has the greatest concentration of eagle programs in the Midwest.  Eagle tourism in the Riverbend has doubled over the past year, and tripled over the past six years.  Eagle watching hotspots include the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary in St. Charles County, Pere Marquette State Park near Grafton, Illinois and along the Great Rivers National Migratory Scenic byway between Alton, Illinois and Grafton, Illinois........

Arch Grounds Redesign Update

    Redesign Of The Arch Grounds Getting Underway........

Following the selection of the winning design in the Arch Grounds redesign contest and the subsequent modification of that design, the time has come for work to begin on the project.  Friday, the superintendent of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, Tom Bradley, gave an interview to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.  During the interview, Bradley answered questions about funding for the project, the removal of the Arch Grounds parking garage and the aerial trams crossing the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River Infrastructure

    Opinion:  Don't Saddle Taxpayers With Rivers........

Funding for new construction and rehabilitation along the inland waterways is of grave concern.  Currently, the shipping industry is supposed to pay for half of the repairs through a fuel tax.  Revenues from the tax fall short of funding the needed repairs because of a decrease in barge traffic and cost overruns within the Corps.  Taxes already pay for 100% of operation and maintenance costs for the lock and dam system, but the half and half spilt for lock and dam construction makes up less than 10% of operating costs, leaving a 90% bill for the public........

Marathon and Key West

_________________________________________________

We left Grand Haven, Michigan 5 months ago today to begin our journey on the Great Loop. It's amazing how time flies. I'm also amazed that I have over 10,000 page hits to my website in the 5 months I've been doing it! How can I only have 14 "Followers"....I don't know. I hope everyone following my blog has enjoyed it and I really appreciate all of the comments given. My stories could run for hours, but I like the pictures to be my main focus.

This week my parents, Art and Yvonne, came for a visit to Marathon right after they stepped off a cruise ship Sat. in Ft. Lauderdale. Fortunately, their car holds all 7 of us, but since they've packed everything to stay in Florida for two months, it ALL has to come out for us to fit. This picture shows most of their baggage plus one more roller board! We put it all up in the helm and joke how they get a "walk-in" closet on the Negotiator!

Biscayne Bay Sandbar Update

    Piano Replaced With Chef, Al Fresco Dining........

Three weeks after a grand piano was deposited onto a sandbar in Miami's Biscayne Bay, it was finally noticed.  After going viral, the piano was removed.  Only to be replaced by a table with two place settings, chairs, wine, and even a wooden replica of a French chef.  Maritime interests are not pleased as anything left on the sandbar could become submerged and become a hazard to vessels.  However, the hubub has been welcomed by the Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau........

RiverBill,

I went down to Lake Center today and took some pictures of the ice. When you are standing at the bank, you can hear the moving ice sliding along the stationary ice that is attached to the shore. I am so glad we don’t live any farther north than we do. 95 degrees sounds pretty good right now.

Spring Flooding Outlook

    Iowa Flooding Should Be Fairly Normal.........

During two of the past three years, central Iowa has had major flooding, but the National Weather Service has made predictions that Iowa will be seeing normal to slightly above normal flooding this spring.  The areas likely to see the most flooding is western Iowa's Floyd and Big Sioux Rivers, and the Mississippi River along the eastern portion of the state.  The National Weather Service noted that this is the first prediction of the year, and as spring and summer draws near, the predictions could change........

Reader Commentary......

    Do Fish Making Methods Really Matter? Research Suggests This Way

    By Pamela Teresa Robinette

Eating fish full of omega-3 fats may be associated with a reduced risk of stroke. A new paper suggests it’s not merely how much fish you take in that matters, but exactly how it’s prepared.

Dr. Fadi Nahab of Emory University led a team that studied the role of race and geography in stroke incidence, with a particular focus on the “Stroke Belt’’ inside southeastern United states of America, where stroke death rates are higher than the remaining areas of the country.

For the study, over 21,000 people answered a telephone survey about their fish consumption. African-Americans ate more fish each week than whites, however they were also 3 1/2 times very likely to eat at least two servings of fried fish a week than whites.

Fried fish consumption was 30 % higher within the Stroke Belt compared to the remaining areas of the country.

Consuming fried fish may reduce health benefits in 2 ways, the study said. First, lean fishes for example cod or haddock are more likely to be fried than omega-3-rich salmon, herring, or mackerel.

Second, frying fish is considered to reduce natural omega-3s and replace all of them with cooking oils.

Finally, the analysis declare that consuming more fried fish might be linked to higher incidence of stroke.

CAUTIONS: The food surveys were a snapshot, so that they didn't take into account dietary changes with time that could be essential in stroke risk. More scientific studies are required to establish whether individuals who eat fried fish are actually very likely to have strokes.

And you? How will you cook fish? Here's my mystery fish recipe: "Mediterranean Fish Fillets"

Makes 6 servings.
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: Twenty or so minutes

Ingredients:
1 1/2 pounds firm white fish fillets, such halibut, striped bass or orange roughy
1 tbsp . extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, drained
1/2 mug pitted Kalamata, green or black olives, cut in two lengthwise
2 tbsps . white wine
1 tsp Basil Leaves
1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/4 teaspoon Thyme Leaves

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Coat baking dish without stick cooking spray. Position fish in single layer in baking dish. Delicately salt and pepper the fish. Bake 12 minutes. If fish is over 1-inch thick, increase cooking to 15 minutes.

2. At the same time, heat oil in medium saucepan on medium heat. Include onion; cook and stir 5 minutes or until softened. Put tomatoes, olives, wine, basil, garlic and thyme. Simmer, uncovered, 3 minutes.

3. Take out fish from oven. Spoon sauce over fish. Go back to oven; bake 5 minutes longer or until fish flakes easily having a fork. Serve immediately.

Missouri Waterways

    Panel Debates Repealing Cooler Ban........

Thursday, a Missouri lawmaker, Rep. Don Ruzicka, recommended the repeal of a law passed in 2009 that banned foam coolers from Missouri's Rivers, citing the law is unneeded, and exempts a type of foam that is used in the manufacture of the targeted coolers.  The law also banned beer bongs and containers that hold over 4 gallons of alcoholic beverages.  The Mississippi, Missouri and Osage Rivers were exempt from this law.  Ruzicka's current proposal would leave the alcohol restrictions intact........

Sandbar Shenanigans

    Mystery Solved, Piano Removed........

The mysterious appearance of a baby grand piano on a sandbar in Florida's Biscayne Bay is a mystery no more.  The 16 year old son of a television production designer claimed responsibility for placing the piano on the sandbar.  Nicholas Harrington stated that he intended to create a whimsical, surreal experience not not normally viewed by boaters.  Harrington also said he was trying to leave his mark on the Bay as the artist Cristo did in the '80s by draping 11 small islands in hot pink fabric.  The teen is hoping that the stunt will help him get into Manhattan's Cooper Union College........

World Wide Marine Training is Up and Running

     March Classes in Grafton

Hey Bill,

After Larry Walker tragically passed away in December things were a little confused on whether we'd be able to continue USCG Captain's classes in the St. Louis area with World Wide Marine Training.

I wanted to let all your readers know the operations of World Wide Marine Training is up and going and we plan to teach a USCG OUPV (6-Pack) and 100 Ton Master Upgrade class in Grafton in March. The dates of the class are March 5-12th for the OUPV and March 18-20th for the 100 Ton Upgrade. We will also being doing a Assistance Towing Endorsement on the evening of March 7th and a CPR/First Aid on the evening of March 8th. The class is limited to 18 people and it is filling fast. People should contact Donna or Jeannie at the WWMT training office 866.249.2135 and reserve a spot if they are interested.

We are also trying to organize a Larry Walker "Shove Off" during the class for everyone who knew Larry in the area.

Thanks,
-Matt
Matthew Hahn
USCG Master
WWMT Instructor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RiverBill had to ask ...... "Just what is a Larry Walker Shove Off ?"
Bill,
Hows, Party/Memorial? Shove Off was a term Larry always used when he was leaving "I've got to Shove off", or "Are you Shoving off Matt?" I guess a navy term.
Thanks
-Matt
Coast Coast Guard announces further
temporary traffic restrictions on Chicago
Sanitary and Ship Canal
CHICAGO - The U.S. Coast Guard announces temporary waterway restrictions today for vessel traffic on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, effective Jan. 27-29.
These vessel traffic restrictions are necessary for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue testing the electric dispersal barrier that was installed in effort to prevent the passage of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.
To support these actions, the U.S. Coast Guard will enforce a safety zone on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Vessel traffic will not be permitted during the enforcement period without approval from the captain of the port, Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan.
WHERE: Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal from the Lockport Lock and Dam to the Fish Barrier (mile-marker 296.1-296.7).
WHEN: All day, beginning at 7 a.m. on Jan. 27 and ending at 7 a.m. on Jan 29.
Questions regarding the waterway closure can be directed to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan at 414-747-7182 or to U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago at 630-986-2155. Questions on the construction project can be directed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 312-846-5330.
The level of the Lake of the Ozarks has fallen another six inches over three days.  Last week, the level had dropped a foot.  The Lake elevation was at 655.96 as of Wednesday morning.  The operators of the Bagnell Dam intend to run at minimum generation over the weekend.  At this time, no water is being released from the Truman Dam.  The Ozark guide curve calls for a two month drawdown to make room for spring runoff.  By the end of February, the target elevation is 654.0........
Hi Bill,
Went down to check the river for you this weekend and found Hoppies Marina covered in snow. The river looked so pretty with all the ice. Kinda makes you miss Jamaica doesn't it?
YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2010 ----   was sent to us by Capt'n Jeff Osborne, who hails out of Paisa Harbor.
Bill,
Photo taken Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 at My Lady of the Rivers next to Palisades. The forecast calls for rain this afternoon, but it was beautiful this morning. The river takes on a whole different feel in the calm of a cool winter fog. The ice was breaking apart and we watched it drift down river. The gulls were singing and feasting on a bounty of fish breaking over the dike. God willing, I will remember this day at Blessing of the Fleet later this year.
    Arch Grounds Plan To Include Gondolas Across The River........
The amended plan for the revitalization of the Arch grounds will be unveiled Wednesday with a major addition: aerial gondolas to spirit visitors across the Mississippi River to the East St. Louis Riverfront.  Back in September, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates won the design competition for improving the Arch grounds, but their entry did not include the gondolas.  The idea for the gondolas crossing the River on overhead cables came from one of the four design competition finalists, Behnish Architekten of Germany........
Check Your Boat !
Checking on your Boats....
We got a phone call from a friend of ours (Mark Sanders) who was checking on his boat this past up at Yacht Club of St. Louis. He called to inform us that our boat (Dad's Cool Dream) was sinking. We had just checked on it 2 weeks ago and it was fine. We then got a phone call from our harbor master Rich Luttrell who met us their. He also called John Block (Block Marine Service) who also came to our rescue to figure out what's next. They have been dredging the harbor and our slip in boxed in. So now they will try to defrost the ice in the harbor so they can move the slips out of the way. John Bloch said they should be able to pull the boat by Wednesday. Everyone has been a great help to Jim and Me. So it might be a good idea to check more frequently. Here are some pictures Mark took.
Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal
    US Coast Guard Announces Temporary Restrictions
Date: January 24, 2011
Contact: Ninth Coast Guard District Public Affairs Office
(216) 902-6020
Coast Guard announces temporary
vessel traffic restrictions on Chicago
Sanitary and Ship Canal
CHICAGO - The U.S. Coast Guard announces temporary waterway restrictions today for vessel traffic on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, effective Jan. 24-26.
These vessel traffic restrictions are necessary for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue testing the electric dispersal barrier that was installed in effort to prevent the passage of the environmentally harmful Asian carp into the Great Lakes.
To support these actions, the U.S. Coast Guard will enforce a safety zone on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Vessel traffic will not be permitted to transit through the zone during periods of work. However, every effort will be made to allow vessels to transit when work is no longer taking place.
WHERE: Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal from the Lockport Lock and Dam to the Fish Barrier (mile-marker 296.1-296.7).
WHEN: From 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Jan. 24 through Jan 26.
Questions regarding the waterway closure can be directed to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan at 414-747-7182 or to U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago at 630-986-2155. Questions on the construction project can be directed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 312-846-5330.
Lower Mississippi River Shipping
    River Traffic Restrictions Start Tuesday........
Tuesday, new restrictions will be imposed on vessels passing through the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River, thanks to a multi-million dollar cut in funding for dredging operations.  The budget cuts will not allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge as much as they have in the past.  This means that some vessels with deeper drafts will not be able traverse the lower Mississippi River, possibly boosting the price of shipping, as well as the costs of products shipped being shipped along the River........
New Mississippi River Bridge Update
   What's In A Name?  That Which We Call A Bridge........
After returning to work, legislators in the Metro East have wasted little time introducing new bills, one of which pertains to the name of the New Mississippi River Bridge that will carry I-70 over the Mississippi River At St. Louis.  HJR 0001 would designate the Bridge as the Veteran's Memorial Bridge.   In December, a bill was introduced in the Missouri legislature that would name the Bridge after Stan "The Man" Musial, but would support naming the span after veterans.  Both the Missouri and Illinois  legislatures  must approve of the name........
    Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park Is Making A Comeback........
When the Taum Sauk Reservoir broke in December of 2005, 1.3 billion gallons of water rushed down Proffitt Mountain, and dumped tons of boulders, trees and debris in Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park.  In the years since, a massive cleanup effort was undertaken to restore and even improve the park.  Since the Taum Sauk's breach is part of the park's history, a portion of the park was left as it was following the rupture........
Fun in the Keys
Another fun week of great weather and playing in the sun! The kids seem to be getting their schoolwork done a lot quicker now and are anxious to get outside and play!
We found a beautiful huge starfish. Too bad it was alive as it's a federal offense to take them
Jaxon was holding down the dinghy that day while the girls brought hermit crabs, starfish, etc. to the boat for him to take care of.
     Fire Breaks Out Aboard The Admiral........
Friday morning, firefighters were called out to the St. Louis Riverfront to battle a fire that broke out aboard the now vacant Admiral riverboat.  Apparently, demolition crews working aboard the vessel caused the blaze when sparks thrown from cutting torches ignited old cooking grease.  At first the workers were able to control the fire using extinguishers, but they had to call in the fire department to put out the blaze.  It eventually reached 2-alarm status.  No injuries were reported........
Bill,
Went over to West Alton and up to Gilbert Lake today (01-16-10). Wish I was in Jamaica - but alas, we are doing what we do here in the winter. Saw some hunters and their dog in this really neat blind. Then on up the river to Gilbert Lake, it was a pretty day! I was amazed to watch them move these sleds with supplies and decoy's over the ice. Since it was in the 40's I was afraid to try to venture out on the ice. How I long to dig my toes in the sand!!!
Boat Manufacturer
    Several Wisconsin Builders Bring Workers Back........
Apparently, business has improved for some Wisconsin yacht builders to the point that they have rehired workers that had been laid off during the recession.  Carver Yacht Group has brought back some 300 employees and KCS International Inc., manufacturer of Cruisers and Rampage yachts brought back 100 workers.  Burger Boat Co. has employees still laid off, but are constructing two yachts.  Burger's management is hoping that orders roll over the spring and summer........
