Testing Ground For Latest Electric Boat Motor

Shootout at Lake Of The Ozarks ........

During the 2019 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, the first electric powered boat made it's debut in the competition.  The Volt 180, developed by Vision Marine Technologies Inc. hit a blistering speed of 30 MPH, making it the fastest electric boat on the water at that time,

While 30 MPH isn't very fast compared to some of the other boats that are capable of running upwards of 200 MPH, it gave Vision Marine a leg up in the race to develop a faster, more powerful electric boat.

Quebec, Canada based Vision Marine was founded in 2012 with the mission of combating waterways pollution.  The company has developed a lineup of zero pollution, zero emissions boats, including a nostalgic runabout........

Boat Builders Designing for High Power Outboards........

The high-horsepower outboards available today are heavy and produce huge amounts of power and torque.  These three attributes have been challenging for boat builders to design around.

Only a few years ago, Kevin Burns, vice president of design and product development for Sabre Yachts and Back Cove Yachts, was at the helm of the company's first outboard powered boat, the Back Cove 340.  The vessel was equipped with twin Suzuki 250, and once Burns got it up to 40 knots he turned so hard that the engines broke free and the vessel spun out.

Luckily, no one was hurt .  Burns says part of the process was determining the limits of the vessel's design.  Fast forward a few years, and today's design and construction analysis software makes these types of sea trial stories a thing of the past........

Alumacraft Celebrates 75th Anniversary........

Alumacraft had humble beginnings that can be traced to a German immigrant named Eugene Tetzlaff, who opened a blacksmith shop in Minneapolis in 1893.  The shop was known as the Flour City Ornamental Company, and they produced iron for the sustained construction of the Twin Cities.

Fast forward to World War II, the company had shifted production to making airplane parts and pontoons to contribute to the war effort.  Following the war, company president Harry J. Neils had a vision to produce aluminum fishing boats.

In 1946, the Alumicraft name and brand was born.  Neils started small, with the first boat being the 12 foot Model B.  The vessel was a standard aluminum row boat that sold well in conjunction with a series of canoes and duckboats........

Alton Preparing For Riverfront Park Final Phase........

During Wednesday's meeting of the Alton City Council, Alton Mayor Brant Walker stated that this phase of the Riverfront Park improvement project will be focused on the parking lot near the Argosy Casino.

Walker says that Phase 8 is the final phase of the 20 year plan for improving Riverfront Park.  He adds that there will be room for more walking and biking, as well as more connectivity between the Riverfront and the downtown area.

Greg Caffey, Alton's Economic Director says that the $2.5 million project will include new pavement, re-curbing some sidewalks and gutters, the addition of lighting for improved nighttime visibility and the creation of a new bicycle lane to connect the existing Madison County Transit and Sam Vadalabene bike trails........

Crews Still Working At The Amphitheater........

Even though the COVID-19 outbreak ended up canceling the majority of the events scheduled to be held at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater, there still has been some activity in Alton's Riverfront Park.

A catfish tournament was based out of the park, and according to Alton's City Public Works Director, Bob Barnhart, there are still plans proceeding for a busy 2021 season.

Back in October, crews had to address vandalism at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater after some light fixtures and a circuit breaker box were damaged.  Barnhart says that time spent making those repairs could have been spent on other projects.........

Acoustic Asian Carp Deterrent Study Starts Ad L&D No.19........

The U.S. Geological Survey has announced that contractors, engineers and scientists were set to begin installing a temporary experimental underwater Acoustic Deterrent System at Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.19 between Keokuk, Iowa and Hamilton, Illinois.  This experiment is part of a study to understand how invasive Asian carp respond to acoustic or sound signals.

Randy Hines, a biologist with the Upper Midwest Biological Sciences Center says that the location was chosen because scientists had considerable data on fish stocks in the region, and it is the only location Asian carp can pass through the lock gates only.

The installation of the acoustic sound system will be performed at the same time scheduled maintenance is being carried out, between January 1 and March 15th.  The uADS and study equipment installation will likely take around two months, and the system will be operational for about three years........

Missouri River Flooding

Another Suit Filed In Missouri River Flooding........

R.Dan Boulware with the Polisinelli law firm filed a second lawsuit against the federal government over flooding along the Missouri River, only a month after it was ordered to pay some landowners for damages.

The new class-action lawsuit was filed on behalf of 60 plaintiffs that sustained damages during 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2014.

Boulware says that the class action lawsuit is the sequel.  Boulware had successfully argued in the earlier suit that the U.S> Army Corps of Engineers knowingly flooded some farmland when it made operational changes to protect endangered species........

Mississippi River Museum Honors Minnesota's "Mussel Guy"........

When Mike Davis says that he's known as Minnesota's Mussel Guy, he isn't bragging.  In reality, his work has helped bring endangered mussel species back to the Mississippi River.

In 2014, Davis was instrumental in establishing Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources mussel lab in Lake City in 2014.  The lab is located near the banks of the Mississippi RIver, which has been a resource for and a benefactor of the lab's work.

In 2017, researchers there were the first to identify the host fish for the larvae of the federally endangered spectaclecase mussel.  This discovery was the key to propagation and conservation efforts for the species........

The river had closed to navigation for a mile in each direction from the bridge for parts of two days before officials determined that it was save for river traffic to pass beneath it........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Alton Waiting For FEMA For Riverview Repairs........

The talks between Alton and the federal government in the hope of getting federal funding to help with repairing the wall and road at Riverview Drive are still proceeding, however, very slowly.

The City of Alton is trying to get the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund a portion of the costs involved in repairing the wall and surrounding areas.  THe city says that extreme rainfall caused the bluff to slide, taking part of the wall with it.

Bob Barnhart, the Alton Public Works Director says that the FEMA process is slow moving, but still moving in the right direction.  He notes that the remaining wall and surrounding areas are checked frequently and no other land sliding has occurred........

Residents File Suit Over Proposed Barge Fleeting Area........

Richard and Gloria Sims of Grundy County, Illinois have filed suit against the State of Illinois and Illinois & Michigan Oil, LLC. to get a hearing on a proposed barge fleeting area that would be developed on the Illinois River east of Seneca, Illinois.

The Sims claim that the barge fleet proposal requires a public permit hearing, the governor's personal approval and contact with local property owners.  The complaint proposed several measures, from a hearing to prohibiting the project alltogether.

The Sims' complaint claims that the development will amount to a "floating tank farm" that could contain between 75 and 100 times the amount of liquid fertilizer that exploded in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4, 2020........

WRDA 2020 A Win For The Mississippi River System........

On December 27, 2020, the $2.3 trillion "Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 was signed into law.  This legislation includes provisions that will enhance the supply chain farmers and agriculture rely upon.

The Water Resources Development Act of 2020 included a priority for the agricultural and barge industry by adjusting the cost-share for the construction and major rehabilitation projects at locks and dams along the nation's river system.

The cost-share for these types of projects had been split 50/50 between the federal government and the Inland Waterways Trust Fund to a 65/35 split with the passage of the WRDA 2020.  This cost-share arrangement will apply to projects that start construction between fiscal year 2021 and 2031........

Volvo Penta Introduced Assisted Docking........

Volvo Penta recently introduced their Assisted Docking system for their IPS pod drives, which integrates with Volvo's joystick technology and adds a function that will compensate for conditions such as tide, wind and current when approaching a dock.

The new Assisted Docking system utilizes software developed with their GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System to work with the IPS joystick.  The system features a "human-machine interface" at the helm and electronics through engine and propulsion sensors and navigation processing power to provide a smooth docking experience.

The Assisted Docking system won't dock the boat automatically, but it keeps the vessel on course by fine-tuning the RPM and steering.  If the wind is blowing hard or the current is moving away from the dock, the system will compensate for those conditions.........

Hey RiverBill,

Capt Tim here. It’s official the Shark boat has been sold and is headed for San Juan Puerto Rico and from there it’s going to a small tourist Island called Culebra where it’s going to be used for a tour business. The company bought the Shark boat and my truck the whole rig!

Martha and I left the day after Christmas and headed for Jacksonville Florida where we loaded it on a cargo ship for the 3 day trip to San Juan. From there we rented a car and drove to Ft. Lauderdale to see our good friends and Ex River Rats, Kim and Tyler Mitchell you might know them. Hahaha.

Here are some pictures of the journey.

Mississippi River Near Grand Tower, Illinois

Work Complete On Levee Damaged In 2013........

Officials report that last summer's dry weather allowed crews to finally finish repairs to a Mississippi River levee in southwestern Illinois.  The levee had been damaged when a drain pipe failed in 2013.

A year later, then-Governor Pat Quinn authorized the sale of up to $1.5 million in bonds to fund repairs to the Big Muddy Levee in the city of Grand Tower.  The repair work had not been completed by the time near record flooding arrived in January 2016, prompting evacuations.

Missouri River Management

Officials Concerned About Low River Levels........

Officials are raising concerns about the current level of water along the Missouri River at St. Joseph, Missouri.  The Buchanan County Commissioners sent a letter to Missouri Representative Sam Graves expressing worries about the low level of the Missouri River which is currently just above three feet.

Since early fall, shipments through the St. Joseph Port Authority have been grounded and the local lakes that are fed by the Missouri River levels have less than two and a half feet of water in most areas.

The St. Joseph Port Authority requires a minimum of seven feet of water in the river for barges to get through.  Richard Deshon, port authority chairperson says that he understands that water management may be complicated, but river transport should be a top priority........
