The Pictures of the Day ....  was sent to us by Betty Bannister

Bill,

Stepped out on my front porch Christmas day to look at the river and the snow and saw many eagles. Here are two pictures I took that day. I traveled about 3 or 4 miles total around Grafton and saw 17 eagles in about a half hour.

Hope you are having a good time on vacation.

See you this summer.

Kankakee River Spill Update

Water Testing Efforts Increased Following Spill........

Workers at the Wilmington water plant immediately began more frequent testing of River water after Monday's explosion at the Kankakee River Metropolitan Agency wastewater treatment plant.  The Wilmington plant is 18 miles downstream from the Kankakee plant.  Water takes about eight to ten hours to cover the distance between the plants.  So far, testing has not revealed any changes in the chemistry of the water, thanks to the dilution factor of the Kankakee River........

Missouri Boating Safety

During the chilly winter months, one way to pass the time waiting for the boating season to start is to earn your boater education certificate.  Boaters born after January 1, 1984 are required to complete a boater safety course to legally operate a vessel on the lakes of Missouri.  This includes personal watercraft.  The boater safety course can be taken online, and is offered in video form as well........

Prehistoric Mississippi River Settlements

Ancient Mississippian Settlement Abandoned Around 1200 AD........

While preparing for the construction of the New Mississippi River Bridge project, archaeologists found the remnants of a prehistoric Mississippian settlement below present day East St. Louis, Illinois.  The settlement had been abandoned around 1200 AD.  Researchers are curious why the Native Americans deserted the area at that time, while the nearby settlement at Cahokia Mounds remained inhabited for another 200 years.   It appears that a fire ravaged the East St. Louis settlement about 1175, but it in not certain if that is the reason for the abandonment........

Happy Holidays

We've had a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends! It's been enjoyable for the whole family and we're sad to see them all go.

Our great friends, John and Carrie Jermstad (from Grand Haven, MI) stayed at a beautiful hotel in St. Pete's Beach (5 miles away) with their sons Mac (left) and Hayden (right). The kids are crazy about them and enjoyed a fun day of swimming in the pool together. That evening we went for a boat ride out the Intracoastal Waterway through John's Pass to the Gulf of Mexico

Kankakee River Spill Update

Too Early To Determine Damage From Explosion........

Officials from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stated that it is too soon to tell what kind of damage was done by the water treatment plant explosion, and subsequent sludge spill.  Investigators believe that a buildup of methane gas caused the blast.  Maggie Carson of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stated that drinking water around Kankakee does not appear to have been affected.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has yet to see any fish kills near the spill........

How Real Men Remove Fish Hooks.....

     From Captain Jim Mar

You guys probably know this …Here is my Christmas Eve tip for the year…

Note the technique…not the size hooks I deal with but the technique is basically the same…(new to me is to double loop the line close to the skin, helps keep it there which is key like the quick snap pull-out)

Might help out during a fishing trip.

Bill - over Christmas we were going through old photo albums.

Here are pictures of Little John (winter 1983) trying to break ice so we
could go for a boat ride on the Free Spirit.

Didn't quite make it. But the effort showed valor and determination.

You just gotta love river rats.

Deer Rescue Update

    Deer Is Recovering........

One of the deer that was rescued from the Mississippi River seems to be recovering nicely.  After being stranded on the River for two days, volunteers rescued two deer that were stranded on an ice floe.  The younger deer ran for the woods after making landfall, but the older doe had frozen her hindquarters to the ice.   The doe required some rehabilitation, so the Illinois game warden contacted certified animal rescuers Rodney and Pam Starr about providing care.   Partial paralysis was a big concern with the deer, as she alternately lost control of her back legs, and then her front legs.  The deer stood briefly Monday on her own........

Bill:

Love the boat Jamaica pics. Perfect for BOATING site!

And, while I like sunsets as much as the next person (OK, perhaps a little less), they're getting to be like bird pics.

I love the west coast of Michigan and we spend some time up there every summer. it's as "salty', boating-wise, as Annapolis. Dinghies everywhere. The whole culture is boating and beaches.

Here are a few pics of the South Haven area and some activity on Black River (which empties into Lake Michigan).

Oh and one pic of me with the crew at the South Haven Yacht Club.

Keep the Jamaica pics coming.

Asian Carp Update

December Brought Good And Bad News On Carp Front........

In early December, a federal judge ruled against the states who were requesting the closure of the Chicagoland shipping locks as a way to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.  Recently, the Obama administration acknowledged the carp dilemma with the release of the 2011 Asian Carp Strategy Framework.  So far fencing was erected near Ft. Wayne, Indiana in order to keep carp in the Wabash River from getting into Lake Erie.  Biologists are looking for ways to prevent the carp from breeding as well........

Corps of Engineers Seeks Christmas Trees to Improve Fish Habitat

Mark Twain Lake, December 16, 2011 – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encourages local citizens to participate in the annual Christmas tree recycling program. Christmas trees can be brought to a collection site at John Spalding Boat Ramp. Christmas trees will be accepted at this location until January 31, 2011.
Residents of the Mark Twain Lake surrounding area can contribute to these efforts by donating trees. The trees will be bundled together and sunk in Mark Twain Lake, creating underwater fish structures. These structures are excellent places for fish to rest. This underwater habitat also encourages the growth of algae and zooplankton for young fish to feed upon which enhances growth. Structures will be placed in Mark Twain Lake in mid-March by Corps of Engineers employees, and volunteers.
Artificial or flocked tress (with artificial snow) cannot be accepted. Remove all tinsel, decorations, stands and plastic bags from the tree. Individuals or fishing /outdoor organizations are encouraged to help place the trees in designated locations. Anyone wishing to volunteer or wanting more information should contact Brad Stamp at the Mark Twain Lake Project Office at (573) 735-4097.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2008....  were a couple of shots of "Ice Pancakes" on the Missouri River.

The 1st shot is a picture looking downriver from the I-370 Bridge and the 2nd shot was taken at Blanchette Landing Park in St. Charles looking towards the sand company on the St. Louis County side of the Missouri River..

Surprisingly....the channel of the Mississippi River was pretty much ice free yesterday afternoon near the Two Branch Island area, while the upper end of the Dardenne Slough was almost solid ice.

National Great Rivers Museum At Alton, Illinois

Bald Eagle Viewings Are Coming Up........

It is common knowledge that bald eagles are wintering in the area, and some of the best spots for viewing them are along The Great River Road.  What may not be as well known is that the National Great Rivers Museum in Alton is presenting the chance to see a live bald eagle up close and personal.  On January 23rd, 30th, February 6th and 13th, from noon to 4 pm, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation will be playing host to the annual Eagle Meet and Greet........

Grounded Freighter Update

Efforts To Release Stranded Freighter Put Off........

Apparently, not enough crew members were able to be rounded up on Christmas to man the tugboats needed to free the 579 foot, coal carrying McKee Sons.  At around 9 pm on Friday, 5 tugs were able to temporarily free the coal freighter, however, it ran aground again while being maneuvered around.  Owner of the freighter, Grand River Navigation, decided that since the vessel appeared to be in good shape and they were not able to fully staff the 5 tugboats, they would wait until Sunday to resume recovery efforts........

Mississippi River Bridges

Cairo Bridge To Close Early Next Year........

The Illinois Department of Conservation announced that the bridge carrying US 60 and 62 over the Mississippi River will close January 11, 2011 to all vehicular traffic.  Back in November, traffic had been limited to a 15 ton weight limit, on account of the deteriorated condition of the road deck support system.  Even though police have been enforcing the weight limit restrictions, there have been too many violations for the span to remain open........

Ice Fishing Accident Update

    Teen Dies After Being Revived........

After being submerged for 90 minutes in Banner Marsh Lake, following a fall through the ice, 15 year old Michael Hallor was rushed to the hospital, slowly warmed and revived.  12 hours later, the teen died.  Tuesday afternoon, Hallor and his father, Frank, were walking back to shore when the ice gave way below Frank.  As Frank was pulling himself out of the water, the ice broke up beneath Michael.  Michael was helped from the water, and was crawling toward shore, when the ice gave way again, submerging the teen a second time........

Grafton Ferry Update

Closure Of The Grafton Ferry Often Loomed........

When the Grafton Ferry shut down two years ago, citing silting issues possibly caused by dredging operations upstream, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers answered that they are only responsible for maintaining a 9-foot deep navigation channel.  The corps did offer to split the cost of a study into what was causing the silting problems.  Many appeals for assistance in funding needed dredging operations had met with rejection........

Missouri River Near Great Falls, Montana

Ice Jam On Missouri River Being Monitored........

A flash flood warning is in effect for Great Falls, Montana thanks to the damming effects created by an ice jam.  In some areas around Great Falls, the Missouri River is already out of her banks.  When ice builds up and dams a river, the water still flows beneath the ice, causing the ice to be pushed to the banks, where it can't flow downstream.  There are two ways for the ice to be dissipated, melting, which raises the water level, but more likely, the ice will start moving because of the higher water levels created by the ice dams themselves........

Louisiana Levees And Joyeux Noel

Papa Noel Coming, Bonfires Needed For Guidance........

For over 100 years, Cajuns have been lighting bonfires atop the Mississippi River Levees on Christmas eve, in order to guide Papa Noel down the River.  How the tradition got started is a bit of an enigma, but it is thought that it began as a New Year's Eve custom, as little French children typically received their gifts at that time.  As time went on, families began lighting the bonfires on Christmas Eve, and settling in for a bowl of Gumbo afterward.  These days, the bonfires are regulated and permits are required.  110 permits were issued this year........

Meriwether Lewis Update

Some Historians Doubt Suicide Cause Of Lewis' Death........

While it is a matter of historic record that on October 11, 1809, Meriwether Lewis was killed by two gunshot wounds at a Tennessee Inn.  What his descendants and researchers are questioning is whether or not Lewis died by his own hand.  They have been unsuccessfully lobbying the feds to allow the exhumation of Lewis' remains since the early nineties.  The first suggestion that Lewis had been murdered came from a report from the committee that put up a monument at Lewis' grave.  It stated that it was more likely that Lewis died at the hands of an assassin........

Grafton Ferry Update

     Grafton Looking For Ferry Options........

With the recent closure and sale of the Grafton Ferry, the city of Grafton, Illinois is looking at their options for finding another ferry service provider.  Grafton Mayor, Tom Thompson, stated that he was shocked when he heard the Grafton Ferry Co. was sold, but he admitted that he already had feelers out for an alternative ferry service.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had contacted Thompson to discuss the channel, maps and an alternate landing site to the former ferry's landing.  Thompson is confident that a replacement ferry service provider will be found........

Rambling River to visit National Great Rivers Museum

Alton, Il. – The National Great Rivers Museum is pleased to host a travelling exhibit, the Rambling River Project fiber art display. The exhibition’s grand opening will be from 12:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 2, 2011, providing visitors a chance to meet the artists who handcrafted this beautiful collection of artistic quilts.

Fitting in with the National Great Rivers Museum’s message to “Discover your connection to the river!” this display is a series of 15 landscape scenes with a common river running through them. Each panel was designed and quilted by a different artist from throughout Missouri.

The Rambling River Fiber Artists, as they are known, each received limited instructions and worked individually to create their own unique images. The piece made its public debut at the Lee’s Summit Quilters Quilt Show in November. It amazed audiences with the how the river flows uninterrupted from scene to scene throughout the 22 foot compilation.

The display will remain open during the museum’s daily operating hours through Saturday, February 26, 2011.

The National Great Rivers Museum is located off River Heritage Parkway (IL Hwy 143) at #2 Lock & Dam Way, East Alton, IL 62024, adjacent to Melvin Price Locks & Dam. It is open daily from 9:00 to 5:00, with no charge for admission or the locks and dam tours. For more information please call 618.462.6979 or toll free 877.462.6979.

Fishy Stories

    USGS Scientists Studying Pallid Sturgeon........

A transmitter chirps in her belly, once every ten seconds.  The scientists are able to track the movements of 1094 by following the audio signal she emits.  This may seem a bit Orwellian, but scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey are able to locate the pallid sturgeon named 1094 by tracking her transmitter chirp.  1094's movements are recorded by a data tag, the information telling researchers not only where she has been, but what her environment was like.  Researchers believed that 1094 would be a good candidate for a breeding program in a hatchery, but she was not mature enough to spawn.  Pallid sturgeon only spawn once every 2-5 years, and reach reproductive maturity by 11-12 years of age........

Feds Seek Plans To Improve The Health Of The River........

In a recent release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, they announced that they are looking for suggestions for ways to improve the health and water quality of the Mississippi River.  The release states that on a voluntary basis, eligible landowners and farmers will institute methods to contain nutrient runoff.  Richard Hungerford, an Illinois state resource conservationist based in Champaign, stated that although they do not draw their drinking water from the Mississippi River, the quality of it's water is important........

River Property In Missouri

    End To Property Tax Proposed........

Fenton resident Richard LaViolette has put forth a ballot initiative to amend the Missouri state constitution to ban personal property taxes.  LaViolette states property is not really owned if there is a tax levied against the property.  A ballot summary has been approved by the secretary of state's office.  The supporters of the ballot initiative should start gathering signatures so the measure could be voted on in 2012........

Mississippi River At Bellevue, Iowa

    Bellevue Dock Panel Modifies Design.......

Although prior efforts to bring a public boat dock to Bellevue, Iowa have failed, an informal "dock committee" has narrowed the scope of their plans before re-submitting the plans to the Bellevue City Council earlier in the month.  The council  has approved splitting the cost of a $3,500 engineering study that would figure out the cost, design and feasibility of the proposal, as well as a $750 permit application.  The proposal includes 10 finger docks, an 85 foot long bridge spanning from the shore to the dock, and an angled ramp for disabled access........

Fishing News From Lake Springfield

    Catfish Stocking Delayed Until 2011........

The scheduled restocking of blue catfish into Lake Springfield has been pushed back to 2011.  The Kentucky based supplier was not able to deliver the 5,500 fish that were ordered.  An alternative hatchery was not able to help, as they only had hybrid catfish that are not capable of reproducing.  Fishermen had put in $2,000 to assist with payment for the fish.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources chipped in another $500........
