November 10, 1975 in Shipping History

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior sank on this day in 1975.

On the evening of Nov. 10, 1975, the 729-foot ore carrier sank during a severe storm with a full cargo of taconite pellets. The ship went down approximately 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay, Mich. All 29 crewmen on board perished.

This shipping tragedy resulted in a requirement for exposure (now immersion) suits on Great Lakes vessels and later all commercial vessels and fishing vessels operating on “cold waters.”

Cruise Ship Conundrum

U.S. Navy Responding To Damaged Cruise Ship........

After an engine room fire cut power to the 952 foot Carnival Splendor, the cruise ship has been adrift in the Pacific Ocean off of Mexico's coast.  Tuesday evening, Mexican tugboats arrived and got the liner underway again.  The cruise ship is expected to make it back to San Diego by Thursday.  No one was hurt during the incident, but food is in short supply.  Close to 50,000 pounds of food has been delivered so far.  The U.S. Navy has diverted the USS Ronald Reagan from training maneuvers to lend assistance........

Coast Guard begins nation's largest buoy retrieval operation

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Petty Officer 2nd Class Benjamin Gaines, a deck-crewmember aboard USCGC Buckthorn, orders a buoy into place during Operation Fall Retrieve on Nov. 23, 2009.

U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class Brandon Blackwell.

CLEVELAND – In anticipation of the coming ice season and to ensure the safety of vessels transiting the Great Lakes Basin, the Ninth Coast Guard District has begun its annual retrieval of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway System seasonal aids to navigation, the largest domestic aids to navigation recovery operation in the United States.

Operation Fall Retrieve, which includes lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons, commenced Oct. 14, 2010, with a goal of retrieving 1,264 navigational aids, and should be completed by Dec. 28, 2010. The aids, approximately half in the region, are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and severe weather.

The Ninth Coast Guard District's aids to navigation system facilitates safe and efficient maritime activity in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway region by marking safe passage for domestic, international, commercial and recreational vessel traffic. The Coast Guard manages 2,599 federal aids in the region.

The waters of the United States and its territories are marked to assist navigation by the U.S. Aids-to-Navigation System. This system employs a simple arrangement of colors, shapes, numbers and light characteristics to mark navigable channels, waterways and obstructions adjacent to them.

Aids to navigation can provide a boater with the same type of information drivers get from street signs, stop signals, road barriers, detours and traffic lights. These aids may be anything from lighted structures, beacons, day markers, range lights, fog signals and landmarks to floating buoys. Each has a purpose and helps in determining location, getting from one place to another or staying out of danger.

To accomplish the aids to navigation mission, the Ninth Coast Guard District employs six Coast Guard cutters, five Aids-to-Navigation Teams; five small boat stations with aids-to-navigation duties; the Lamplighters, civilian employees who manage the inland waters of Northern Minnesota; and Canadian Coast Guard partners and the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.

In addition, the Ninth District Coast Guard Auxiliary helps inspect approximately 3,000 privately-owned aids to navigation in the region.

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

First of all, I should explain what we mean by "points." To answer that, I'll have to go back a few years to the days before we referred to compass bearings and headings in degrees. In the early days of navigation, we started with the "cardinal points" of North, South, East and West. We then divided those points in half with the terms Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest and so on.

As it turned out, we divided the magnetic compass into 32 points. Throughout most of the history of navigation, we referred to the direction in which we were traveling by terms like "Northeast by East" or "South Southeast." Helmsmen, watch officers and others involved with marine navigation were accustomed to the 32-point system for a good many years.

Seamen on lookout watch would report sightings of other vessels in "points" relative to the bow and the beam. The phrase "three points off the starboard bow" meant 33.75 (11.25 multiplied by 3) degrees to the starboard side of "dead ahead." The phrase "two points abaft the port beam" meant 22.5 degrees (11.25 multiplied by 2) aft of the port beam.

The use of degrees came into vogue early in the twentieth century. There was compass variation (the difference between true and magnetic north) and deviation (onboard magnetic interference) to deal with. There were computers and other electronic gadgets used in navigation. There was also the accuracy that dividing the compass into 360 degrees could make possible.

The mathematical nature and the precision of the "360 degree" system would prove to be beneficial to all mariners. We have since been aided by LORAN and GPS, two devices that could not function on the old "compass points" system.

Given that there are 360 degrees in a circle, and thirty-two compass points, a point became equal to 11.25 degrees (360 divided by 32). Accordingly, if you multiply the 32 compass points by 11.25 degrees, you will end up with 360 degrees.

The early compass references in the Navigation Rules started out as "points." It was not until revised Navigation Rules were adopted by the U.S. Congress and put into effect in 1965 that for the first time the word "degrees" appeared. However, that revision included "points" in parentheses after each reference to "degrees."

The basis for the "arc of visibility" of our navigation lights is grounded in the old "compass points" system. The arc of visibility of a light is the number of degrees out of the total of 360 that the light is visible. Our masthead lights are 225 degrees (20 points), our sidelights are 112.5 degrees (10 points) and our stern lights are 135 degrees (12 points).

References to compass points aboard ship are almost a thing of the past. But there are still a few of us old diehards left. So the next time that someone alerts you to "dolphins, two points abaft the port beam," you'll know what they are talking about!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Rivers Around The World

Developing Countries Can Learn From The Mississippi River........

James Biery, a senior consultant with Royal Roots Global, recently stated that developing countries can learn quite a bit from the Mississippi River.  Biery added that the construction of dams, levees and locks along the Mississippi River can show the world potential consequences of these types of projects.  The floods of 1927 showed that using levees to control the Mississippi River was not sufficient and the floods of 1993 were the costliest in U.S. history to the tune of $15 billion........

Missouri River Reservoirs

Levels Of Missouri River Reservoirs Still Above Normal........

Lower than normal rainfall along the Upper Missouri River has helped the reservoirs recover a bit, however, they remain fuller than normal.  Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that several Missouri River tributaries, including the James, Big Sioux and Platte Rivers are flowing higher than normal amounts of water and are expected to do so through early December.  Runoff totals for the year are anticipated to be 155% of normal, making 2010 runoff totals the third highest in 110 years........

Tombigbee Waterway

After a one month 60 mile side-trip to Joe Wheeler we were back on the Tennessee River heading to the Tombigbee Waterway. The first day took us through two locks, 30 mph winds and up river 60 miles to the junction of the Tombigbee Waterway where we stayed at a very popular Zippy Branch anchorage with 4 other boats.

Day two was our first experience on the Tenn-Tom. Very narrow, hairpin turns and shallow waterway made it feel very different than the Tennessee River. We awoke early and were excited about our venture down. As we turned a corner and saw an oncoming tow, we called on the VHF for instructions on how to pass. He told us to pass on the “2” and sit tight due to the narrow channel, size of the barge and strong wind. No problem with the “2” (starboard to starboard) but immediately after stopping we ran aground (11 feet to 0 within a five foot area). Stunned by the sound it made we looked ahead to see another boat named Destination, ran aground in front of us. Luckily, we were bow in and the wind took us off after 30 minutes. However, the boat in front of us wasn’t so lucky with her stern hung up.

Craig kept a great attitude through the “grounding” and when our cruising looper friends, Lazy Dolphin passed us, Craig radioed him to say we took this anchorage! When I wanted to cry, he made me laugh!!

Heading to Aberdeen Marina was a half a mile channel into the swamp!

Rock Island Swing Bridge Catches Fire........

Thursday afternoon, fire crews were called out to battle flames that engulfed a portion of the old Rock Island Swing Bridge.  The fire began when crews were welding below a portion of the structure that is being restored.  When the span was constructed in 1895, it was the largest swing bridge in the country.  It closed in 1999 because of it's poor condition.  The bridge was going to reopen on Saturday, but this season's high River levels have pushed back restoration efforts........

The Picture of this Day in 2009-----  was sent in to us by Capt'n Mike Densmore.

Mike snapped this picture of three towboats heading up river a few weeks ago.

Dan Owen of sent us the following explanation of where they were headed:

Bill;

The reason for one boat pushing two other "dead" towboats upstream is because Thanksgiving Day is traditionally the last day to get southbound barges out of the Twin Cities before the river starts to freeze. All year most boats tow 16 empties northbound, 15 in front and one on the hip. But, they may depart with only 12 or 15 southbound loads, so there is a disparity of barges on the upper end. Crews will be flown to St. Paul for the "dead" boats and they will clear out the barges before the river freezes or they will be stuck until the river opens again in March or April. While these are American Commercial Lines towboats, they will pick up competitor's barges on the southbound trip, too. Their competitors will reciprocate and tow each other's barges, so it all evens out.

Barges In A Traffic Jam On The Mississippi River........

During a busy time of year for barge shipping, Lock and Dam No.13 near Fulton, Illinois had closed down on Tuesday, and will be closed Thursday.  The reason for the closure is that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is re-installing lock gates that just got makeovers.  In the meantime, barges that are moving freshly harvested grain are backing up while the repairs are being made.  The work is routine, and will be carried out at Lock and Dam No.15 near the Quad Cities next.......

Halloween Rendezvous

It’s been an exciting week for us. The Looper Fall Rendezvous took place and with over 200 participants, plus vendors and staff, it was very busy. The marina and hotel were at full capacity and having so many people together that share the same dreams is amazing. We met a lot of people that have done the trip and some planning to make the loop. We opened our boat for the “Looper Crawl” so others could see how we live. I had more than one group say that we were the most organized boat they saw (but you have to be with kids!).
We were interviewed by two magazines, “Life on the Water” and “Heartland Boating.” It seems we are the only family doing the trip right now. It was fun to share our story as it seems everyone’s story is so different. The Great Loop can be done in so many ways all with different goals, routes, timelines, etc.
We also attended a cocktail reception and thanks to Aunt Shell, the girls had pretty dresses to wear (oops, no pictures though)!

Craig found this piece of driftwood on a hike and made a fun mask

The Picture of this Day in 2009.........  were sent to us by Capt'n Randy Johnston who hails out of lake Center Marina...

.

Riverbill,

I went down to Lake Center this afternoon (11-2-2009) to see the crest of the October/November 2009 flood and took these pictures. The rain really robbed us of what would have been a great boating weekend for Halloween. There were things floating in the slough that you wouldn’t want to hit. Perhaps we will be able to get out later this year.

FEMA Flood Maps

St. Charles County, FEMA Host Open House........

Thursday night, St. Charles County and FEMA held an open house for residents to peruse the preliminary flood insurance rate maps put together by FEMA.  Home and business owners in the 100 year floodplain will be required to purchase flood insurance if they have federally-backed loans.  There would also be restrictions on improvements to structures build in the floodplain.  The proposed maps from 2009 had placed considerably more people's property into the floodplain, however, the 2010 maps have corrected some of this........

US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard announces temporary vessel traffic restrictions on Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal

CHICAGO – The Coast Guard announces temporary waterway restrictions for vessel traffic on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal Nov. 3 – 5.

These vessel traffic restrictions are necessary for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue construction of the electric dispersal barrier in effort to prevent the passage of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.

To support these actions, the U.S. Coast Guard will activate a safety zone on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Vessel traffic will not be permitted to transit through the zone during periods of work. However, every effort will be made to allow vessels to transit when work is no longer taking place.

WHERE: Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal from the Lockport Lock and Dam to the fish barrier (mile-marker 296.1-296.7).

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily on Nov. 3 - 5.

Questions regarding the waterway closure can be directed to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan at 414-747-7182 or to U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago at 630-986-2155. Questions on the construction project can be directed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 312-846-5330.

Prank Caller Gets Prison For Hoax Distress Call........

Tuesday, Andre D Cheatom was sentenced to 18 months in prison for making a false distress call to the U.S. Coast Guard.  In July of 2009, Cheatom called 911 on his girlfriend's cell phone, and stated that he had thrown a baby and it's mother into the Detroit River.  The authorities called the cell back, which was answered by a woman that laughed and hung up.  Meanwhile, the Coast Guard spent an hour searching the mother and child.  Cheatom was fined the cost of the Coast Guard's efforts, to the tune of $14,302.  When asked why he made the call, Cheatom stated that he was bored and drunk........

Boat Manufacturer

    Tracker Plant Damaged In Fire........

Just after 4 am on Sunday, the Miami, Oklahoma Fire Department rolled out in response to a fire alarm at the Tracker Marine plant.  The plant builds the Tahoe deckboat, and the family runabout.  The fire began in the grinding room, where the excess fiberglass is ground off the boat when it comes out of the mold.  At the fiberglass cures, it generates it's own heat, that can cause the material to ignite.  Damages to the facility are estimated at $30,000........

Illinois Sportsman to DNR

    Where's our money ?

The Illinois Policy Institute is reviewing how millions of dollars have been spent in recent years under the Pittman-Robertson Act.  The Pittman-Robertson Act  authorizes an 11 percent tax on guns, ammunition and fishing equipment to fund and promote sportsmen’s pursuits.

The Institute’s investigation revealed the DNR has been using that money to support two state universities, who are studying foraging by mute swans and ways to better count ground squirrels. The DNR also used the money to convert paper documents into electronic documents, maintain websites, and poll the public on policies and regulations.

US Army Corps of Engineers News Release

     Carlyle Lake

Old Kaskaskia River Channel Pedestrian Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Carlyle Lake – The Carlyle Lake Project and the City of Carlyle will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Old Kaskaskia River Channel Pedestrian Bridge, on Wednesday, November 10, 2010. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will take place at the General Dean Bridge Recreation Area located on Old Rout 50 east of Carlyle.

The Old Kaskaskia River Channel Bridge project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2010. The 180’x9’ steel pedestrian bridge was erected over the Old Kaskaskia River Channel located southeast of the existing river channel. The bridge was constructed for pedestrian access to the existing multi-use trails on the west and east side of the Kaskaskia River in conjunction with other multi-use trails located at Carlyle Lake.

The placement of the Old Kaskaskia River Channel Pedestrian Bridge has created an additional 1.5 mile trail segment that connects the West and East Spillway Recreation Areas. This segment also provides a connection directly to the Carlyle City Park and the City of Carlyle making this multi-use trail more accessible to the residents and visitors of Carlyle and providing increased opportunities for fitness and recreation.
For more information on the event, contact the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594–2484 or email at carlylelake@usace.army.mil.

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

We have discussed the benefits of Emergency Position Radio indication Beacons (EPIRB) in the past. Its great insurance, especially when you are you are offshore or on large inland waters. When you are out of VHF radio range and in trouble, an EPIRB can be your "life line."

I was once asked a pretty good question about EPIRBS. What if your EPIRB goes off and nobody is listening? That is to say, nobody receives the signal. Believe it or not, in the past, depending on the type of EPIRB that you were using, that scenario could play out.

EPIRBS transmit a signal that is intended to alert rescue authorities of your location when you are in distress. The word “distress” in the maritime realm means that you have a problem that you need help solving. Your EPIRB sends a “distress” signal that notifies the rescue authorities in your area. There used to be several types of EPIRBS, varying in the way that they are switched on, the signals that they transmit and the way in which they are detected.

The most basic type of EPIRB of the past only transmitted on a frequency of 121.5/243 MHz. They were designed to be detectable by "over flying" military and commercial aircraft and also by satellites. However, the satellite had to be within line of site of BOTH the EPIRB and a land-based terminal to be effective.

The older units could be either automatically or manually activated. The automatic types (Class A) actually "float free" out of their resting place and begin transmitting automatically. The manually activated type (Class B) is actually "switched on" by a crewmember in the event of an emergency.

The more advanced EPIRBs of today transmit on both the 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz frequencies. The 406 MHz frequency signal is used for accurately pinpointing your location via satellite. The 121.5 MHz frequency signal is used a "homing" signal by aircraft and rescue craft enroute to your location.

A 406 MHz frequency EPIRB, commonly referred to as a "406," is satellite detectable anywhere in the world. The 406 EPIRB is available in "float free automatically activated" (Category I) and "manually activated" (Category II) models. The 406 EBIRB is the internationally accepted standard for large passenger vessels.

EPIRBS should be tested periodically, as you would any lifesaving equipment. Category I and II devices have a "self-test" function that is an integral part of each unit. Read the manufacturers instructions for testing procedures.

Let’s get back to the original question of who might be listening for your EPIRB signal. There is clearly a difference between the models available. But, someone will always receive that signal, day or night, 365 days a year.

In the case of the Category I & II EPIRBS, the long-range cruiser has the security of knowing that if things get rough, someone will always be listening via satellite. EPIRB prices vary between eight hundred and a thousand dollars. BOAT/US even rents EPIRBS for those of us that make only that occasional long passage.

There is usually a way to insure our investments. When it comes to EPIRBs, the insured investment is YOU. I would pay the premium and get an EPIRB!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

News Release From BoatUS

Design A Better Life Jacket And Win $5,000
Life Jacket Design Competition Returns; Public Asked to Judge

ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 1, 2010 - The BoatUS Foundation's "Innovation in Life Jacket Design Competition" is once again calling for out-of-the-box life jacket design entries.

Five years ago, the Innovation in Life Jacket Design Competition resulted with the introduction of several new and innovative life jacket designs to the public, the US Coast Guard and recreational boating industry. Since then, the interest in new, more comfortable designs has not faded. While current models of life jackets save lives every day, many are still bulky and uncomfortable, leaving boaters reluctant to wear them.

So the BoatUS Foundation, along with Underwriters Laboratories and the Personal Floatation Device Manufacturer's Association, decided another competition was necessary to keep the momentum going to seek out the newest technologies and design innovations that could rethink a 100-year-old design.

"We all have the mindset of what a life jacket looks like - and that's what we need to be challenging," said Underwriters Laboratories' Joe Waters. Entries that embrace new technologies and non-traditional thinking are being encouraged from armchair inventors to high school science clubs and collegiate design programs. There are no rules regarding types of materials to be used or whether the design meets any current US standards. The deadline to enter is February 1, 2011.

The entries will be judged based on four criteria: wearability, reliability, cost and innovation. "Wearability" relates to the level of comfort. "Reliability" will take into account the chances for potential failure, while "cost" will look at the affordability of the design. "Innovation" will take into account originality or the employment of new technologies.

In early February, video of all entries will be posted online at the BoatUS Foundation's channel at YouTube.com, and the public will be asked to select a group of finalists. The finalist entries will then be reviewed by a special panel of judges convened at the International Boating and Water Safety Summit in Savannah, Georgia, on March 6-9, 2011, and the winner announced. A $5,000 cash award goes to the winning designer.

"We believe that out-of-the-box thinking may lead to the next generation of life-saving devices," said BoatUS Foundation President Ruth Wood. "We anticipate designs that will be creative and unconventional."

To enter, video footage of an actual working prototype must be submitted by providing a URL link to the video (no actual prototypes are submitted). The video must clearly demonstrate how the design floats a person in the water. For more information on how to enter and for contest rules, visit www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/lifejacketdesign. You may also contact Chris Edmonston at 703-823-9550, x8356.

Near-Record Catfish Reeled In During Tourney........

During the recent River Bend Classic Tourney, Piasa, Illinois resident Jason Jackson reeled in a near record 105 pound blue catfish.  The fish was the second-largest blue cat taken during a North American tournament.  Jackson caught the blue below the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 at Alton, Illinois.  After heaving the monster cat for photos, Jackson released the fish, adding that he releases all the fish he catches........

Asian Carp Update

Scientists Seeking Ways To Control Carp........

Biologists with the U.S. Geological Survey's Columbia Environmental Research Center are studying Asian carp, looking for ways to control them.  Researchers are looking at the fish's "alarm cue" as a possible way to manage them.  When the carp are frightened, the fish release a chemical signal that causes the school to swirl upon itself in rapidly rotating cloud.  Biologists believe they may be able to influence the movement of carp populations by using these pheromones........

News Release 623
Wastewater from Audrain County swine farm flows off field, into local creek

Volume 38-623 (For Immediate Release)
For more information: 573-751-1010

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 27, 2010 – An undetermined amount of wastewater from an Audrain County swine farm ran off from the field where it was being applied and into a local creek Wednesday, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The department dispatched an investigator to Audrain County Wednesday after receiving a complaint of animal waste in Sandy Creek. The investigator determined that the animal waste originated from a field where it had been applied by the Merle Culwell Farm, located on County Road 628 near Middletown.

Department staff advised the operator of the farm to construct temporary berms below the land application field and in the stream to contain the wastewater and pump it back to the lagoon.

Land applying wastewater from agricultural lagoons is allowed under the condition that it does not leave the site or enter waters of the state.

The department’s Northeast Regional Office in Macon, which conducted the investigation, notified the Department of Health and Senior Services and suggested that any appropriate public health advisories be issued.

To report an environmental emergency, including after-hour sewage overflows, please contact the DNR spill line at 573-634-2436. To report sewage overflows during regular business hours, contact the nearest regional office. A list of regional offices, their contact information and service areas is available online: http://dnr.mo.gov/regions/regions.htm.

River History....

01 November 1834 in River History

The 1st published reference to poker as Mississippi riverboat game was made by Jonathan H. Green in his writings. He wrote about the rules to the "cheating game," which was being played on the riverboats that traveled the Mississippi River..
He chose to name the game Poker after he realized it was the first such reference to the game and it was not mentioned in the current American Hoyle.

Russia's Lady of the Rivers Statue ..........

Dan Owen, of Dan Owen's Boat Photo Museum, has sent us a link to a picture of Russia's lady of the River....

Bill;

I saw this photo on a European web site today and just had to pass it along.
It appears Russia has its own version of Our Lady of the Rivers, but in much grander scale.

It is located in the Perebory section of Rybinsk, Russia, on the Volga River.
I searched many Russian web sites but could not learn its exact location, its name or why it was built.

The towboat is the SERGEY KLADKO, owned by Rybinsk River Shipping Company.

The photo was posted by Sergey Lysov on Shipspotting.com.... Click here
