RiverBill,
Looks like they have been doing some much needed work at Piasa
Public Access. Years ago it was well maintained, had nice docks
on both sides and the very large parking lot would packed on
summer weekends. When people have good access they are more
likely to own a boat and that helps the local economy.

Hi Riverbill,
Took these this past weekend, and just felt
surrounded by beauty at Sioux Harbor. Sunset on starboard side, moon rising
on port side, just surrounded! Add good company, a few cold ones, and a
couple of pics for memories!
Thought I'd share.

Mississippi River Near Bettendorf,
Iowa
Hope On The River Stopped In The
Quad Cities........
Thursday afternoon, an unusual boat tied
up to a dock in Bettendorf, Iowa. According to the owner,
Erich Mische, not much is elegant about the boat, it doesn't
handle very well and it's boxy.
Mische says that the boat is a Home Depot
garden shed that has been modified to sit atop a 50 year old
rotting pontoon deck. He put the vessel together to travel
down the Mississippi River to bring awareness and raise
funds for Spare Key, a nation-wide nonprofit that offers
financial assistance to families dealing with major medical
crises.
Mische said that the COVID-19 outbreak
has affected the Spare Key program as their financial
deficit for fiscal 2020 is between $500,000 and $750,000.
The non-profit has had to cancel virtually every fundraiser
this year.
Mische says that he is a big believer in
hope, and that is what our country is in need of right now.
He is spreading his message of hope and positivity all the
way to Baton Rouge, where he intends to arrive in
mid-October........

Grand River Near Jameson, Missouri
Teen Found Mastodon Tooth In THe
River........
While out exploring along the Grand River
near Jameson, Missouri on August 29th, 18 year old Ira
Johnson found a priceless fossilized mastodon tooth in the
river.
Johnson says that he has been exploring
since he was very young and was introduced to the pastime by
his father and uncle. He states he usually finds things
like silver plated spoons or other types of junk.
Johnson said that when he spotted the
tooth, he didn't think much of it, believing it to be just a
rock. When he got home and showed his father his latest
find, his father's face "lit up", indicating Ira had found
something quite special........

Missouri River Cleanups
Volunteers Cleaned Up The River
Differently This Year........
On Saturday, volunteers with Missouri
River Relief were out picking up trash along the Missouri
River. In years past, around 200 volunteers were would work
on cleaning up trash at once, but this year, groups were
smaller because of the pandemic.
Groups of 20 volunteers worked Saturday,
and will be picking up illegally dumped trash and tires from
the water over the next several days.
Volunteer Tanner Aljets says that he
loves the river and is trying to do some good work upstream
for those downstream. Missouri River Relief has performed
more than 200 Missouri River cleanups, where some 27,000
volunteers have removed tons of trash from the river........

Metro East Levees
Working Cats To Help Protect Wood
River Levees........
The Wood River Drainage and Levee
District recently joined a national "working cat" program in
an effort to protect the levees against voles, moles and
other rodents that burrow into levees, damaging them.
According to Charles "Chuck" Johansen,
president of the levee district, they will be able to enter
into an agreement with the Metro East Humane Society and
it's Working Cat Program. The levee district will adopt
feral cats, who will help control rodent infestations.
Johansen says that they currently have
some critters causing damage and believe that the presence
of the cats will help the situation. Kurt Prenzler, Madison
County Board Chairman says that burrowing animals are a
serious threat to a levee's performance........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois
Grafton Removing Fuel From Marina
Tanks........
The Illinois State Fire Marshal's office has
called upon the City of Grafton to remove the fuel from the
tanks at the Grafton Marina. Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin says
that there has been issues at the marina for some time, and the
state is requiring the city to take action.
Eberlin says that the concern is that the
fuel tanks could rise out of the water and cause environmental
damage. He added that the State Fire Marshal's office had given
the city two weeks to address the issue.
Eberlin stated that marina management had
been given 60 days to respond to violations found during a Fire
Marshal visit back in June. He is hoping that fueling
operations will be able to resume soon at the marina, as the tax
revenues generated by the marina's fuel dock are going
elsewhere........

The National Great Rivers Research and

announced that they will be hosting the Illinois RiverWatch Fall
Speaker Series, which will feature four different free Zoom
presentations from four different scientists.
Danelle Haake, RiverWatch Director and Stream

RiverWatch become more of a year-round program.
Haake adds that the series is intended to
provide the opportunity to learn more about water through a
series of online events. She adds that they are focused on how

Gateway Arch Lights Will Be Turned Off
For Bird Migration........
The National Park Service recently announced
that they would not be lighting up the Gateway Arch at night for
over a week this month because of bird migration. The Arch will
be dark from September 18th through the 30th.
Officials with the Gateway Arch National Park
say that they turn the lighting off in order to avoid
potentially disorienting birds that migrate at night. The
lighting will be turned back on October 1st........

Boat Gas News
Trump Commits To Expanding E15 Fuel
Blends........
Last week, President Trump reportedly
committed to ease a restriction on the sale of higher
ethanol blended fuels, such as E15, which drew the ire of
the recreational boating community.
If the policy becomes final, the change
could allow E15 to be dispensed from pumps made for lower
bio-fuel blends, including E10. THe National Marine
Manufactures Association has called on the administration to
reverse it's decision.
The NMMA claims that the proposal would
flood the marketplace with potentially dangerous and
environmentally destructive E15, making E10 more scarce, and
place hundreds of American consumers at risk........

Asian Carp Update
Michigan Chipping In To Help Repair Carp Barrier
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently signed legislation
that restores funding which supports the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers plans for rebuilding the Brandon Road Lock and Dam.
The lock and dam is located along the Des Plaines River near
Joliet, Illinois, which raises a question; Why would Michigan
fund the project? The answer is simple, it is an investment in
protection.
The Corps' plans involve creating a channel fitted with multiple
fish deterrents, including an electric barrier, a water bubble
fence, acoustic deterrents and a flushing lock.,.......

High Tech Mayflower Departs England 400 Years After Original
Mayflower........
On Wednesday, officials launched a high-tech vessel named Mayflower.
400 years to the day from when a wooden vessel set sail for the
New World, changing history for two continents.
Christened by the U.S. Ambassador to Britain, Robert Wood
Johnson, the Mayflower has no crews nor passengers. The
vessel will cross the Atlantic Ocean powered by the sun and
wind. Artificial Intelligence will be controlling the helm.
Johnson says that the high-tech Mayflower, which was
developed jointly between U.K. based marine research
organization ProMare and U.S. tech titan IBM, shows that the
pioneering spirit of the Mayflower lives on........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau,
Missouri
Stan The Kayaking Man Visited ........
Stan Stark, an 81 year old retired U.S. Navy
Seabee is currently paddling a sea kayak solo down the entire
length of the Mississippi River, from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of
Mexico. Once completed, Stark will have set the world record
for being the oldest person to complete the journey.
Stark and two paddlers that joined him along
the way, Brian Hoover and Chris Brennan, stopped in Cape
Girardeau, Missouri on Wednesday. Stark says that he wanted to
stop there because he had been there before and knew it was a
beautiful place with wonderful people.
While Stark and his crew expected to make a
quick pit stop, they were met by a large group of town
officials, Veterans, students and other well wishers, and will
end up staying until Friday.
Stark is making the trip to benefit Sarge's
Place, which is a homeless Veterans' outreach program, shelter
and support service center in Forks, Washington........

Senators Announce Funding For River
Transport Improvements........
U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin
recently announced $2.5 million in federal funding for one of
the largest freight hubs in the Midwest, America's Central Port
in Granite City, Illinois.
The funds would be used for the construction
of the new agriculture product storage bins and a conveyor
system, and comes from the U.S. Economic Development
Administration.
Duckworth says that the funds for America's
Central Port will help support economic development in Granite
City and the surrounding area, including the creation of jobs

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois
Senator Durbin Lobbies Corps For Quincy
Bay Funding.........
On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin spoke
with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division
Commander Major General Diana Holland to discuss the selection
of the Quincy Bay Restoration Project for funding through the
Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program.
Durbin has called on the Corps several times
for funding to restore Quincy Bay, which is one of the largest
natural bays along the Upper Mississippi River. The bay has
experienced severe sedimentation and land erosion that is
affecting the area's ecosystem.
Durbin says that the environmental need for
the Quincy Bay restoration project is clear, noting that it
would improve waterways for boaters, reverse the effects of
sedimentation and erosion on the local ecosystem and provide the
community with a place for recreation once again........

Release From BoatUS
SPRINGFIELD,
Va., Sept. 16, 2020 – Boaters in much of the U.S. and Canada
acknowledge the need to winterize their boat’s engines each
autumn. But what else can go wrong? Boat Owners Association of
The United States (BoatUS)
offers boat owners a free online resource at
BoatUS.com/Winterization. The website is chock full of
winterizing checklists, tips, and a downloadable Boaters Guide
to Winterizing to help all vessel owners ensure their boats are
stored safely for the winter.
“In addition to winterizing the engine, there are a few other
important things boaters should know,” said BoatUS Vice
President of Public Affairs Scott Croft. “Like
should you use a plug-in heater? How do you
store a boat that has E10 fuel in the tank? Or once
preparations are done,
how can you keep your boat safe over the winter months?”
In addition to a
boat engine winterization checklist for both outboard and
inboard engines and another on
what to look out for over the long winter lay-up period,
BoatUS.com/Winterization also offers off-season outboard care
tips and help with
what to do if the winter storm of the century approaches.
Following the winterization guidelines from BoatUS will help
ensure you get back on the water faster next spring.

Mississippi River Shipping
Proposed Cargo Ship Would Carry Load Of
2,375 Trucks, Leave No Wake........
American Patriot Holdings LLC is proposing to
move ocean-bound cargo along the Mississippi River, through the
Port of Memphis aboard the largest ships ever used along the
Mississippi River above Baton Rouge.
The vessel is an untried design never before
seen on the world's rivers, and yet is intended to haul as much
cargo as 2,375 highway trucks while never creating a wall of
water in it's wake.
Called a liner, the vessels would
leave a low wake in it's path even though the ship would be 595
feet long, 134 feet wide, draft 9 feet of water and displace
17,500 tons of water. It's engines could propel the liner
upstream at 13 MPH........

Hoppie's marina is a well known spot on the Mississippi river
that has been in operation since 1934. They cater to local
boaters as well as transits from all over the world. Tragedy
struck in 2018 when our gas barge and another sank. After many
attempts and lots of money we were able to bring up one of the
barges, however our gas barge was unable to be risen. We worked
with the remaining barges and installed new gas and diesel pumps
and were still able to operate on a limited compacity. Tragedy
struck yet again in Feburary 2019 when 2 additional barges sank.
Those were unable to be raised, due to that almost all
operations were brought to a hault. We are unable to launch any
boats, we have very limited docking available for our transit
boaters, no fuel options, very limited capability on electric
and water. Hoppie's marina is the knowledge of the river and
everyone knows if they stop here they will obtain all the
information they could possibly need or want. Also hoppie's is
the only stop between Alton and Paducah with both options for
fuel. There is an definite need for Hoppie's to continue to
operate. In order for this to happen we need to have a salvage
company come in and remove the sunken barges and then begin the
rebuild process. We are asking for help to make this possible so
we can continue to provide river knowledge and care to our
customers
We want to thank everyone who has been with us all these years
making so many good memories on the river, and thank you in
advance for anyone that can help

News
Release From BoatUS
SPRINGFIELD,
Va., Sept. 15, 2020 – September is the start of nation’s boat
haulout and winter storage season. As boaters prepare their
vessels for a long winter nap it’s time to check the boat’s
insurance policy for “Ice and Freeze” coverage. This coverage is
sometimes offered as a policy rider or endorsement and is
affordable, so you may want to check your policy now.
For boats stored in states where below freezing temperatures are
the norm, Ice and Freeze coverage takes care of winterizing
mistakes that can leave your engine unprotected when
temperatures tumble or when winter storms knock out the heat to
indoor boat storage facilities. However, even boats located in
temperate states that are winterized and stored in the water can
be hit be hit by sudden cold snaps.
“Ice forming inside a poorly winterized marine engine block
creates a tremendous amount of force causing damage that you may
not learn about until springtime,” said GEICO Marine Insurance
Vice President Mike Pellerin. “When freeze damage occurs after a
do-it-yourselfer
winterizes his or her boat, having Ice and Freeze coverage
can help protect the boat owner.”
This affordable coverage does come with one caveat: Most
insurers do not offer the coverage once temperatures drop,
usually the end of October, so check with your insurer before
then. BoatUS offers GEICO Marine Insurance policies that can add
this coverage for as little as $25. To get a free quote, go to
BoatUS.com/Insurance.

Duck Boat News
Federal Judge Drops Boat
Accident Charges
Table Rock Lake "Not A
Navigable Waterway"....
Earlier this month, a federal
magistrate ruled that the charges lodged against a "duck boat"
captain, who had been charged with negligence in a July 2018
storm related accident on Table Rock Lake that claimed the lives
of 17 people, will have to be dismissed.
According to U.S. Magistrate Judge
David P. Rush, Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri does not
meet the federal definition of a navigable waterway, a federal
court has no jurisdiction.
Reportedly, the Western District of
Missouri is reviewing the recommendation. Judge Doug Harpool of
the Western District must rule on the recommendation. If the
federal charges are dismissed, the government could appeal the
decision, or the captain could still be charged in state
court........

Lower Mississippi River
Ship Channel Deepening Project
Has Begun........
On Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers officially began the project that will deepen the
Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet when Weeks Marine's
cutterhead dredge Captain Frank started dredging
operations 5 miles above the Head of Passes.
The Corps had awarded the first
contract to Weeks Marine on September 3rd. The Corps awarded
the second cutterhead dredge contract to Manson Construction on
September 8th. Manson's dredge, the Robert M. White will
begin deepening later this month.
The overall project will create a
draft of 50 feet from the Port of Baton Rouge to the Gulf of
Mexico, which is more than 256 miles of the Mississippi River.
Phase 1 of the project will deepen the channel from the Gulf of
Mexico through the Southwest Pass to Belmont Crossing, opening
up some 175 miles of the ship channel to a deeper draft........

MILE
0.8 – MILE 0.0 - DREDGE OPERATION
Continuing until approximately September 15, 2020, the
M/V BILL HOLMAN is conducting dredging operations between
approximate Miles 0.8 and 0.0, down-stream of the Costello
L/D, from the lower lock gates to the Upper Mississippi
River confluence. The M/V BILL HOLMAN will monitor VHFFM
Channel 13 and requests advance notice of passage, prior to
transiting the area. The dredge utilizes floating pontoon
lines, anchor lines, small tenders and skiffs, in support of
operations. Tows requesting lockage are encouraged to
contact the lock in advance to schedule their arrivals.
Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe
speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after

For September 19th
Mississippi River at Manitowoc,
Wisconsin........
Reportedly, twenty-eight submarines were
constructed in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and took a trip down the
Illinois River, the Mississippi River and eventually the Pacific
Ocean during World War II.
On Saturday, September 19, 2020, a memorial
to those submarines will be dedicated in Grundy County. John
Connon is the commander of the U.S.S. Chicago Base for the U.S.
Submarine Veterans organization, and is inviting the public to
the site at Illinois Avenue and Liberty St. in Morris at 11 am.
Common says that four out of the twenty eight

RiverWatch Volunteer Raised A Family Of
Biologists
Monitoring Water Polution........
Professor John Griffis, father of RiverWatch
Technician Hannah-Beth Griffis, has been a RiverWatch volunteer
citizen scientist since 1998. He had help his kids get their
start in biological studies within the creeks Fox and Des
Plaines Rivers' watersheds in northern Illinois.
Although he is retired, Griffis still keeps
busy as an adjunct professor at Joliet Junior College and is
monitoring two sites along the Lily Cache Creek as part of the
program .
Griffis first learned about the RiverWatch
program from a co-worker who was planning to train for the
program. He liked the idea of monitoring the water for
pollution. The water monitoring trips ended up becoming a
family activity for the Griffis clan........

NTSB Released Report On 2019
Towboat/Bulk Cargo Ship Collision........
The National Transportation Safety Board has
released their report on the June 8, 2019 collision between the
towboat Kaytlin Marie and the bulk cargo ship Century
Queen along the Lower Mississippi River at Mile Marker 126
near Hahnville, Louisiana.
Three of the Kaytlin Marie's seven
crewmembers were injured in the collision, which also caused the
towboat to spill some 9,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the
Mississippi River. The Century Queen sustained around
$384,000 in damages, while the Kaytlin Marie sustained
just under $1 million in damages.
After wrapping up their investigation, the
National Transportation Safety Board concluded that a failure to
properly communicate passing arrangements led to the
collision........

Hi RiverBill,
In case anyone recognizes this blanket or super large towel, it
was located at the bottom of Woodland Harbor entrance! Our
friends, owners of the Keach 22 happened to pick it up on their
Propellors. They would be happy to return it to their owners!
Luckily skin diver Captain Hans of the “ Free To Dream” was able
to unwind it from the props, and the murky depths of the
Mississippi River. It actually was retrieved in its entirety!

Missouri River Management
Inflows Below Average In Upper
Basin.........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has
reported that the precipitation was well below normal in the
Missouri River Basin during August, especially in the
western and far northern portions, which saw less than 25
percent of normal precipitation.
The lack of rainfall and dry soil
conditions resulted in 74 percent of average runoff into the
Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa (Upper Basin)
last month. The 2020 forecast for the Upper Basin is 30.6
million acre-feet, or 119 percent of normal.
The average annual runoff for the Upper
Missouri River Basin is 25.8 million acre-feet. The runoff
in the Upper Basin for the remainder of 2020 is predicted to
be below average........

Plenty Of Mussels........
The 154 mille long Bourbeuse River is
home to approximately38 species of freshwater mussels.
According to Andy Roberts, a biologist with the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, all of the different species are
likely to be found within Franklin County.
Of those 38 mussel species, several are
considered to be federally endangered, including the pink
mucket, the scaleshell, sheepnose, snufbox, spectaclecase
and the winged mapleleaf.
Currently, the City of Union, Missouri is
having to spend $30,000 for a required mussel survey. The
mussels would have to be relocated prior to beginning the
planned $12 million Union Expressway project, which includes
a bridge spanning the Bourbeuse River........

Mississippi River Ports
Port Designation May Help With
Development........
U.S. Representatives Darin LaHood, Cheri
Bustos, Abby Finkenauer and Dave Loebsack recently appealed
to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to designate the
Mid-America Port, the Mississippi River Ports of Eastern
Iowan and Western Illinois and the Illinois Waterways Ports
and Terminals as the Corn Belt Port Statistical Area. The
approval of the statistical designation is expected to make
it easier for the ports to attract investment.
LaHood says that there is no more
effective or efficient way to move goods than along the
Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. He believes that the
designation change would be the catalyst to construct the
proposed intermodal facility in south Quincy Development
District.
The intermodal facility project has been
a pet project of the Mid-America Port Commission for several
years. LaHood says that a lot of federal and private
dollars are necessary to get the project done, however, the
Corps recognizing the designation change would help with
funds acquisition........

Ohio River At Paducah, Kentucky
The Transient boat Dock Has
Reopened........
Officials report that the transient boat dock
on the Paducah, Kentucky riverfront has reopened and is now
accepting reservations. The dock was closed for the past
several months because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Paducah Parks and Recreation Department
says that crews performed maintenance projects during the dock
closure, including the replacement of damaged fascia boards
along the dock sides, the installation of new rubber bumpers and
the replacement of tie-off cleats.
The 340 foot long transient boat dock is
located just downstream of Paducah's historic downtown district
and offers transient boaters and Loopers fuel and power
pedestals. Water and sewer pumpouts are available on a seasonal
basis........

Boating Lifestyles
Boat-Sharing Boat Club, Boat Rentals
Becoming Popular........
The old saw goes: The two happiest days in a
boater's life are the day he buy a boat and the day he sells
it. Nowadays, boaters have a few options for hitting the water,
without the hassles of boat ownership; joining a boat club or
renting a boat.
Freedom Boat Club at Lakeside Marina opened
this past spring, and the 20 members share access to four boats,
a pontoon, a tri-toon, a bowrider and a deck boat. Members must
participate in training and are able to get as many hours on the
water as they want with a captain who will show them the way.
At Grafton Harbor, there are three pontoon
boats for rent. Owner Jan DeShirlia said that rentals are up
around 80 percent this year. She adds that boat rentals offers
families the opportunity to get out and have a good time while
practicing social distancing........

The 9/11 Boat Lift:
Largest Marine Evacuation in History
Published on Jun 28, 2016
During the tragedy that was 9/11 there is a story that is often
overlooked. That is the story of the massive boat lift that took
place in the nine hours after the planes hit the WTC. During
that time almost 200 boats moved 500,000 people from lower
Manhattan by boat. It is the largest Maritime evacuation in
history. The coast guard called for all vessels, and hundreds
showed up, mainly just simple boat owners. That effort is
captured here in this short 1 min video. ...click

produced and directed by Eddie Rosenstein of Eyepop Productions,
Inc. for more information watch this:

MILE 0.8
– MILE 0.0 - DREDGE OPERATION
Continuing until approximately September 15, 2020, the M/V
BILL HOLMAN is conducting dredging operations between
approximate Miles 0.8 and 0.0, down-stream of the Costello
L/D, from the lower lock gates to the Upper Mississippi
River confluence. The M/V BILL HOLMAN will monitor VHFFM
Channel 13 and requests advance notice of passage, prior to
transiting the area. The dredge utilizes floating pontoon
lines, anchor lines, small tenders and skiffs, in support of
operations. Tows requesting lockage are encouraged to
contact the lock in advance to schedule their arrivals.
Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe
speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after
passing arrangements have been made.

Mississippi River near Alton,
Illinois
Angler Reels In 105 Pound
Catfish........
Over the weekend, angler James Gordon of
Clinton, Illinois decided to go fishing along the
Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois in an effort to reel
in a large catfish.
After fishing for several hours, Gordon
says that he was going to rest his eyes, however, around 1
am, he noticed that his line had become taught, indicating
that he had snagged a large fish.
Gordon says that as soon as he pulled on
the line, he knew he had a monster on the other end of the
line. He battled that fish for 20 minutes. Eventually,
Gordon reeled in a 105 pound flathead catfish........

Missouri Department Of Conservation
Do Not Dump Aquariums Into Mo.
Waterways........
The Missouri Department of Conservation is
asking citizens to refrain from spreading harmful invasive
species by not dumping aquariums in rivers, ponds, lakes or
other waterways.
The MoDOC reports that a non-native fish was
recently caught at Blue Springs Lake in the Kansas City area.
Reportedly, a bass fisherman caught a 10 inch tropical oscar
fish on crankbait.
The fish's head and mouth resembled a
bluegill, the tail, fins and coloration did not resemble any
native Missouri fish. A MDC fisheries management biologist
identified the fish as a type of oscar fish usually found in
tropical South America.........

Million Grant........
U.S. Representatives John Shimkus, Mike Bost
and Rodney Davis recently announced that America's Central Port
has been awarded a $20.84 million BUILD grant from the U.S.
Department of Transportation.
Shimkus says that the ports, rivers, roads,
rails and terminals within the St. Louis Metropolitan area are
among the most crucial transportation infrastructure in the
nation as billions of dollars of agricultural and energy

The legislators state that the grant will be

All Students: Figure Out a Better Way to Recycle Fishing Line
and You Could Win $15,000
BoatUS Foundation and Berkley team up for “Recast & Recycle
Contest”
ANNAPOLIS, Md., September 10, 2020 – Young adults love fishing.
Combining angling with the independent thinking and
problem-solving skills taught in today’s classrooms, the
501(c)(3) BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water
and fishing tackle company Berkley have teamed up for a
year-long Recast and Recycle Contest that seeks out improvements
or technology breakthroughs to the fishing line recycling
process. The goal is to ultimately increase the volume of line
and soft bait recycling in the U.S.
“We hope to tap into creative minds of students on an
environmental issue that may be affecting them locally,” said
BoatUS Foundation Director of Outreach Alanna Keating. “Some
young adults who fish have probably seen discarded fishing line
firsthand. This contest gives students a way to utilize science,
technology and engineering to help solve a problem that may be
important to their entire community.”
Recycling fishing line today is a costly and labor-intensive
process. Discarded line can also end up in waterways and
landfills where it can remain a problem for birds and wildlife.
There are also currently no nationwide recycling programs for
fishing-related materials like soft baits.
A total of $30,000 in prize money is at stake ($15,000 first
place, $10,000 second place, $5,000 third place). The contest is
open to anyone willing to submit an entry, including individual
students, classes and schools. The deadline for entries is May
14, 2021. Contest entries can be submitted with as little as a
link to a video demonstration of the idea or one-page graphic
summary. Videos are limited to 4 minutes. Entries will be judged
for their practicality, innovation, and potential for
significant impact.
Contest rules and conditions, details on the current recycling
process and videos on how various plastics and soft baits are
recycled can be found at the Recast & Recycle Contest website
