FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuscumbia, MO

Missouri State Water Patrol announces navigation restrictions due to bridge demolition

On Tuesday, Aug. 31, the old highway 17 bridge over the Osage River near Tuscumbia will be demolished. To ensure safety, the Missouri State Water Patrol asks boaters to take precautions while operating on the Osage River near the demolition area. The demolition of the old bridge is scheduled to take place at 8:30 a.m. Water Patrol officers will be on the water during the bridge demolition to keep spectators at a safe distance. Boat traffic will be restricted during the demolition.

Immediately following the demolition boats may not be allowed to pass through the demolition area. Spectators who plan to view the demolition on the water are instructed to view from the same up or down stream side of the demolition area that they will use to exit the area.

After the demolition, the old bridge structure will be partially submerged in the water creating a navigation hazard. This area of the river will be marked with lighted danger buoys to warn boaters of the hazards. Boaters are asked to heed all warning signs and directions from construction crews working to remove the old bridge structure.

Mississippi River Hydropower Projects

Several Power Projects Proposed On The Mississippi River........

While the Mississippi River has been a major shipping avenue for several decades, developers are looking to utilize the River in a different way.  As a power source.  At this point, there are no less than 12 proposed hydroelectric power projects along the Mississippi River at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Locks and Dams.  Power production is nothing new in the Mississippi River; as AmrenU.E. has been producing power at Keokuk, Iowa since 1913.  The Mississippi River is not ideal for traditional methods for producing hydroelectric power, due to lack of elevation changes.  New technology is changing this........

Mississippi River Near Trempealeau, Wisconsin

   Marina Re-Opens After A 2 Week Closure........

Sunset Bay Marina was finally able to re-open after being closed for two weeks on account of low water levels and excessive vegetation overgrowth that was attributed to the drawdown of Pool 6.  At one point, 100 vessels were grounded.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has agreed to slow their drawdown in an effort to increase water levels at the Marina.  The Corps does not believe that the low water levels is the only reason for the vegetation issues.  They state that prior high River flows have increased the amount of floating vegetation present in the River........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

Among the most basic of needs of any mariner on the water is the need to know the heading to the next waypoint. With the advancements in electronic navigation, it has become much easier to travel from waypoint to waypoint. That is, as long as your electronics are operating properly.

In a pinch, it always helps to know how to do things "the old fashioned way." The old fashioned way involves the use of a magnetic compass. Our marine navigation charts provide us with a "compass rose." The compass rose affords us the basic elements required to plot a course line between two points.

The compass rose supplies several things to the navigator. The outer part of the compass rose illustrates 360 "true" degrees, from which a "true" course can be plotted on the chart. The "inner" part of the compass rose illustrates 360 "magnetic" degrees, all of which include "variation." Variation is the angular difference between "true" north and "magnetic" north.

Variation is the result of a magnetic disturbance that causes a compass to point a few degrees "away" from true north. Variation can cause a compass to indicate a reading that is either east or west of true north. This phenomenon is measured and expressed in some number of degrees "east" or "west" of what otherwise would be a true reading.

What is known as "magnetic" north is not in the same geographic location as "true" north. That little complication causes the value of variation affecting your compass to change with the location of your vessel on the globe. Imagine that true north, magnetic north and your vessel are the three points of a triangle. The shape of such a triangle would be different for each location on the globe.

There are an infinite number of triangle shapes comprised of those three points. Therefore, there are an infinite number "orientations" of your vessel relative to "true" and "magnetic" north. Each unique orientation yields a different value for variation. The variation for each geographic area on the globe is the third thing that is provided in the compass rose, and is printed in the center of it.

The compass Rose story doesn't end there. The magnetic disturbance that causes the variation between true and magnetic north is not static. That's right, it is constantly moving. Printed in the center of each compass rose is the "annual increase" or “annual decrease” that must be applied to the value given for variation. The movement below the earth's crust influences that disturbance that we know as "magnetic north" as well.

What does this all mean to you? It means that if your GPS fails to work, you might have to plot a course between two points on your chart. You can walk the plotted course line over to the compass rose. At the compass rose, you can determine both the true and magnetic course to your destination. The magnetic course can be used to steer your vessel to a destination according to a compass heading . . . except for one more thing.

There is another factor that causes your compass to be off by a few degrees. It is called deviation, and is the result of magnetic interference of equipment on your vessel. But that is a topic for another day!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Day 267 (Portage at last!)
08/29/2010

 I made it!

Pulling out right where I put in last December
It was a day of surprises and moments I’ll remember forever. Thank you everyone that came to see my return (by water) to the very spot on the Wisconsin River where it all started last December. It was overwhelming to see all the friends and family that showed up to wish me well.

It’s been a long trail and I couldn’t have done it without the help and encouragement everyone has given me throughout the last nine months. It has also been a very long day so please forgive me for forcing you to wait a bit to hear more details...........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Blessing of the Fleet

   Thanks !

Bill:

I appreciate the "shout-out" in Sunday's edition of Riverbills.com.

As you know, to make something like the Blessing of the Fleet a success, a lot of people who "pitch in" go unheralded.

I'd like to acknowledge and think some folks who helped me with the water and air portion of the video shoot. They gave their time, talent and their own money (fuel, videotape, etc) to help.

So, I'd like to offer a big thank you to:

1) Mike McGuire and his daughter, Tina, who let our camera man --Rib Bolton of Salty Dog Productions -- ride along on McGuire's 48 ft Bluewater,
Nauti-Pleasure. Nauti-Pleasure hails out of Grafton Harbor.

2) Also, thanks to Dave and Sharon Marlang from Lake Center Marina. They allowed me to ride along on their 30 ft Regal cruiser, Deja-Vu and use their boat as
my platform.

3) You mentioned this on Sunday, but I wanted to add my thanks to Mike Stanczak who took my video camera and was kind enough to fly over the Blessing of the
Fleet to shoot some aerial footage. You published some of his still pics on Sunday.

Lastly, I wanted to thank Amy Spencer and Scott Lewis of Palisades Yacht Club for their help.

I'm sure there are many more who pitched in, but I knew what these folks did and wanted to be sure I acknowledged it.

Wench Carol said "Yes"!

Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois

The Illinois River Ran Yellow In Peoria........

Sunday afternoon, the Illinois River took on a yellow hue at Peoria, Illinois as several thousand ducks were released for the 22nd annual duck race.  The race is a fundraiser for The Center For Prevention of Abuse.  This year, TCFPA sold out all 20,000 ducks, which is up about 2,300 over last year.  The race is an important fundraiser for the TCFPA, as the state and federal governments has slashed funding.  Jeanne Buysee purchased the race winner, and was awarded $5,000........

Reports Of A Third Gator On The Chicago River........

Recently, there have been reports of a third alligator in the Chicago River, this time on the South Branch.  At this point, there is no photographic of other proof to the report.  A fisherman had even inquired if he could kill the gator if he finds it. Apparently, Illinois fishermen have 2 choices when they encounter invasive or exotic species.  Kill them or release them.  The Illinois law is designed to protect potentially misidentified species.........

Table Rock Lake

Lake Activities Should Not Be Affected By Lower Lake Levels........

Recently, the Army Corps of Engineers released a notice advising boaters, dock owners and visitors of the White River basin to be extra cautious on account of the lower lake levels.  The bulletin advises that the lower water levels are attributed to higher demand placed upon the hydroelectric plants at the Table Rock and Bull Shoals dams and the lack of rain to replenish the water levels.  Jim Thompson, owner of the Central Pro-AM Association stated that the lower water levels would have a minimum if any effect on fishing quality, and advises boaters and anglers to use common sense........

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 267 (Portage at last!)
08/29/2010

I made it!

It has also been a very long day so please forgive me for forcing you to wait a bit to hear more details..........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

The Picture of the Day ...... is from Yesterday's Blessing of the Fleet.  It's Tom and Lou's cruiser "Willpower"  passing in front of the judges stand at Pallisades yacht Club.

It was a beautiful day, 248 boats participated in the Blessing, with many anchored boats watching and a good turnout of land spectators at Palisades Yacht Club and Longshots.

The St. Louis Pirates Group were firing cannons before the blessing and were a big hit with the crowd.  Mike Stanczak was flying overhead taking video for Rib Bolton and Larry Demko of Salty Dog Productions.  Captain Pat Reid was on the deck of Palisades and took a picture of each boat in the parade that passed the Judges stand.

RiverBill says thanks to everyone for making this years Blessing a success !

Looks Like Boat Gas Prices Coming Down........

As the summer is winding down, marinas are slowly following each other in lowering their gas prices.  Boaters should expect to pay between $2.79 - $3.31 over the weekend.  Some marina owners are reluctant to lower prices below $3/gallon as they are waiting for prices to stabilize and become more predictable.  On land, gas prices are hovering between $2.52 - $2.59........

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 265
08/27/2010

Daily Stats
Start: 3:00 PM - Montello, WI
Finish 7:00 PM - Endeavor, WI
Time: 4:00 hours
Daily dist: 11 miles
Total dist: 5200+
Companions: John and Tim
Weather: Clear skies, 80’s, SW winds 10+
Notes: Seemed to take forever to work the shuttle with cars.
At the rate it took the three of us to meet up, run a shuttle, paddle 11 miles, and get back to the campground it would taken two years to paddle as far as I have on this trip. It didn’t help that road construction had us detouring all over to reach Endeavor nor did it help that for a short while we weren’t 100% sure where our take out was.

Much like my efforts with shuttling with a bicycle yesterday, car shuttles for paddling trips tend to be riddles of a higher order that are often run on faith rather than full understanding. In fact when I explained the plan to Tim (while taking his boat off his car to put it on my truck along with the two others) he understood as far as the first stop but quickly got lost in what went where and why. Finally as he shook his head and waved his arms to ward off confusion he simply said, “I’ll just follow you.” It truly does require faith… just don’t forget your car keys.........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

News Release From BoatUS

What You Really Need to Know About Boat Insurance in Three Minutes

Dear Friends:

Boat insurance can be a dull, sleepy subject for many boaters and anglers. So why should you care about it?

I just released a short, three-minute video on the topic that I am certain is worth a few minutes of your time. In the video I cover:

  • Why your knowledge of home or auto insurance won't help you one bit when buying boat insurance.

  • Why you should go home tonight to check your own boat's insurance policy for "Consequential Property Damage" coverage.

  • How the "Salvage Squeeze" could end up costing you a bunch of extra money.
These are important things I wish I had someone else explain to me when I bought my first boat and was shopping for insurance. I was clueless.

You can view the "Buying Boat Insurance" video at http://www.youtube.com/user/BoatUSvideos.

Kindest,
Scott Croft

Mississippi River Near Herculaneum, Missouri

Corps Plan Looks To Enhance River Ecology........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a plan to improve the ecology along 7 miles of the Mississippi River close to Herculaneum, Missouri.  The idea is to construct several U-shaped rock structures in the River, as well as shorten some of the current dikes, while cutting notches in others.  The changes would create islands and side channels, all without altering the navigational channel, improving habitat for birds, fish and other wildlife.  The plan is currently out for public review........

Jake The Kayaker Update.......

Day 264
08/26/2010

Daily Stats
Start: 12:30 PM - Marquette, WI
Finish 3:30 PM - Montello, WI
Time: 3:00 hours
Daily dist: 11 miles
Total dist: 5200+
Companions: None
Weather: Clear skies, 70’s, calm winds - nice
Notes: Ran the route as a day trip using a bicycle to work a solo shuttle.

When I first got started in paddle sports more than twelve years ago it was with open canoes on the rivers around Wausau and later Sparta Wisconsin when I lived a summer down there. At that time I could never seem to find anybody to go along with me, so I often went alone. To avoid having to paddle upstream on out and back trips, I worked my own shuttles by using a bicycle to ride back to where I’d leave my truck at the put-in. Sometimes I would lock my bike at the take-out if it was on the way to the put-in. Other times I’d simply put the bike in the canoe with me. Either way, when I reached the take out I’d lock the canoe to a tree then ride back to where I left my truck and pick up the canoe on my way home…........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Missouri River 340 Update

This Years Race Could Be The Quickest Ever........

The world's longest consecutive River race, the Missouri River 340, is at the halfway mark with racers arriving at the Huntsdale, Missouri checkpoint.  One racer had dropped out after being hit in the face by an Asian carp, while another had to swim for shore after her boat got tangled up in some pilings at Glasgow.  Illness and exhaustion has claimed another 25 - 30 racers; up around 10% over last year.  This may be the fastest 340 ever, as a 2 man team is on track to baet the record of 36 hours, 19 minutes........

River Pirate Jean Lafitte ........

Jean Lafitte... Roll over.   The river will be full of pirates this weekend again !

Did you know that Rumor has the famous pirate Jean Lafitte here in the 1800s ?

Lafitte was not your stereotype pirate with a sword and eye patch, but instead a well dress gentleman over 6 feet tall known for his wide-brimmed hats.  A lot of mystery surrounds his life and death....

Jean Lafitte was a pirate and an American patriot.....he is given credit for turning the tide for the Americans during the British American War of 1815 in the Battle of New Orleans !

Rumor has it that.....Lafitte fled the south to St. Louis later on, settled in St. Louis with his family and operated a gunpowder and gun store on the Mississippi riverfront.  Later moving to the East St. Louis and Alton area with his wife and son.

Some say he is buried near Alton, IL !

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Offers New Online Tax Guide for Boaters

ALEXANDRIA, Va., August 25, 2010 - With the fall boat show buying season just around the corner, those looking to get into boating or trading up will be thinking about how much they can afford. However, an important part of the boat buying budget are taxes, and to help those folks understand what taxes apply, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) developed a new online State Boating Tax and Registration Guide.

The guide allows boaters to search state-by-state and includes sales taxes, "use" taxes, any credits given on sales taxes for boats purchased in a different state, registration "grace" periods, title information and links to state boating registration and tax departments.

"Boats can be purchased at out-of-state boat shows," said BoatUS Government Affairs Program Coordinator David Kennedy. "And in some states, boaters need to be aware that they may have limited amount of time to register their vessel or face additional taxes. We can help ensure that there won't be any surprises."

Go to www.BoatUS.com/gov/StatetaxRegistration.asp for more.

###
Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is the nation's leading advocate for recreational boaters providing over half a million members with a wide array of consumer services, including on-the-water towing assistance provided by TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist Pacific. Combined, these two towing fleets offer North American boaters the largest network of US and Canadian towing ports with over 290 locations and over 600 towing assistance vessels — more than double that of any other service provider

Mississippi River Near Ste Genevieve, Missouri

An Alligator Was Found In A Flooded Field........

Wednesday morning, an alligator was found, and rescued from a flooded field near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.  A team was dispatched from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis to recover the gator.  The reptile was then returned to the Bird Sanctuary for evaluation by a vet.  It is believed that the gator was a former pet and likely a juvenile, as it was only about 3 feet long.  Other than rumors, the gator was not reported to have caused any problems........

Fox River Near Green Bay, Wisconsin

    Boaters Become Movie Extras........

Wednesday morning, boaters were on the Fox River in order to create about an hour's worth of River Traffic for the film, "Waterwalk".  The production company wanted 30 - 40 boats, complete with boaters that "look like they are enjoying a holiday weekend".  The film is based on the Steven Faulkner book, "Waterwalk: A Passage Of Ghosts" which is about a trip taken by a father and son team who are following the Marquette and Joliet route of 1673. The independent film will be shot in Wisconsin, Michigan and Missouri over the summer........

Asian Carp Update

Minor Victory Won In Asian Carp Fight........

On Monday, the 5 Great Lakes states were in federal court for an initial hearing in the on-going battle to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.    The federal judge has scheduled more hearings for September in order to consider testimony from expert witnesses.  The Michigan attorney general's office is pleased with the decision, as this would be the first time the case will be heard on it's own merits.  Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case.........

A recent survey of nearly 7,600 recreational boaters has revealed that 64% of those who responded were not worried about the accuracy of their navigational aids to look for or make updates.  The majority of boaters use navigational aids such as electronic and paper charts in addition to GPS, however almost 80% don't keep track of Coast Guard updates that are necessary to keep the nav aids current........

Bill,
This past weekend I spent Friday night at Grafton and then sailed to Alton on Saturday. Normally the prevailing winds would make this easy, but last Saturday the winds were strong out of the East. I had to work hard tacking the whole way. However, this O'Day 34 between Alton and Harbor Point makes it look easy because she's going the other way under a giant spinnaker.

Is The Gateway Arch Rusting Away?

Amid the hype of the Arch grounds make-over, another more ominous specter was left unmentioned.  Apparently, the Gateway Arch has growing rust and decay issues, but no one knows for sure how extensive the problem is.  Visual cues that problems may be present are manifesting themselves as streaks and spots marring the upper portions of the Arch.  A report conducted in 2006 listed corrosion issues, but did not go any deeper.  Another, more in-depth examination is needed to determine what steps will be required for the long term preservation of the Arch........

Boat Safety.....

I was wondering if you could remind river boaters of a few safety rules that apply to all boaters.

This weekend was beautiful and brought out everyone. With the water still being high, most of us were looking for quiet places to raft up. Too many boat operators come too close too fast, bringing their wakes into boats. We heard numerous arguments on the radio that really should not have taken place. Maybe these boat operators do not realize they are responsible for their wakes. I know I would be crushed if something happened to my wife due to a careless boater. They should also be careful when passing small boats, I know there are a lot of cruisers and houseboats that utilize dinghy’s to get to beaches and to run errands that are easily swamped. Also when traveling on the river there are actually lanes like a road you are supposed to use, but most boaters ignore. When traveling down river you should stay towards the green buoys and when traveling up, stay towards the red buoys. Most weekends while we are out, we see 3 boats traveling side by side across the channel with the last one heading directly at us in our lane leaving us nowhere to go but out of the channel. When ramping, please be courteous to other boaters that are waiting for the ramp, after getting your boat on the trailer; please pull your rig out of the way before you secure it for the ride home. We waited 35 minutes for 3 boaters to pull their boats out, and each operator did the same thing, blocking the ramp to secure their rigs for the ride home. All 3 of these boaters had women that did not help their men at all. Women are quite capable of helping. We own a 25’ cruiser and my wife pulls the boat off the trailer and secures it to the dock while I deal with the truck and trailer. At the end of our outing, I put the trailer in the water and she pulls it on. We tie up the ramp for all of 3-5 minutes. I appreciate your time, and depend on your website for valuable information.

    New Bridge Lighting Deemed O.K........

In spite of some initial complaints, the Mississippi Department of Transportation is confident that the new lighting installed on the bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Vidalia, Mississippi is safe.  The U.S. Coast Guard had received some complaints when the lights were turned on back in June.  Tow pilots were having a having trouble seeing the bridge.  The manager of Vidalia Dock and Storage, Carla Jenkins, stated that she had heard more good than bad about the lighting.  Jenkins added that the pilots working for her said they just needed to get used to the lights........

Day 260

It’s interesting, after such a long trip seeing so many amazing places, the simple and sometimes silly things that stand out in my memory… The first sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico, a cormorant trying to swallow a fish so big his neck wasn’t strong enough to lift it, the smell of frying bacon wafting from the windows of passing tow boat kitchens when I paddled down the cold lonely Mississippi last winter…........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Fishing News

What Tackle Do You Use To Catch Coyotes?

Bruce Chandler prefers using an Ish's Phat Frog fishing lure. Actually, Chandler was casting his frog along the shoreline of a Mississippi River slough when a 25 - 30 pound coyote dove into the water after the frog.  Chandler used the trolling motor to drag the coyote out into open water, with the thought that the mutt had his brand new $9 lure, and Chandler wanted it back.  Chandler and his fishing buddy were able to eventually separate the lure from the coyote, and guide him to back dry land........

Chicago River

Another Gator Spotted In The Chicago River........

Recently, a second alligator was spotted on the Chicago River, drawing out onlookers hoping for a glimpse of the 3 foot reptile.  Only a few weeks ago, a volunteer alligator hunter had rounded up a 2 1/2 foot long gator nearby.  Efforts are underway to capture the gator, as is may die if it isn't caught soon enough.  It is likely that the reptiles were former pets, released into the wild when they grew too large........

River Shipping

Feds Aim To Take Cargo Off Road.... And Put It Onto Waterways....

Recently, 18 marine corridors were identified by the U.S. Department of Transportation as alternative routes for shipping goods.  This is part of a federal plan to get cargo off of roadways, and offers a more cost effective and environmentally friendly way to move cargo.  The Maritime Highway Program was formed in response to a 2007 Congressional mandate that marine transportation avenues be developed in order to relieve roadway congestion and reduce air pollution........

Asian Carp Update

Great Lakes Lawyers Moving To Close Locks....  Again....

5 Great Lakes states lawyers will be heading to federal court this week to ask U.S. District Judge Herbert Dow to temporarily shut down the Chicago area waterways in an effort to keep the Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes.  The lawyers are  intending to cite the carp-infested fisheries in tributaries of the Mississippi River.  This argument may not hold water in the courtroom, as no one knows for sure if the carp will survive in the Great Lakes........

Missouri River near Great Falls, Montana

Drawdown At Rainbow Dam To Start Monday........

Starting Monday, PPL Montana will be dropping the level of the Rainbow Dam reservoir by 8 feet.  The process should take around a day and a half and the reservoir will stay at that level through the middle of November.  The drawdown is a portion of the construction process for the new powerhouse facility.  Area boat ramps will be closed, as the water levels will be too low to navigate........

Time: 8:45 hours

Weather: Mostly cloudy skies becoming clear late, 80’s, calm winds
Notes: I can now say I've been to Princeton
The mosquitoes that chased me into my tent last night were hungry and waiting for me to emerge this morning. I waited in bed as long as I could but the call of nature pulled me out of the tent into the gauntlet of tiny stingers. Thankfully my bug suit protected me from most of the attackers and I was able to dive back into the tent without letting too many back in with me. The bugs were the only troubling thing I had to deal with today, even the slightly higher river flow from the overnight rains didn’t do too much to slow my progress upstream.........Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Another Asian Carp Update

Kansas Officials Concerned About Carp Invasion........

While adult bighead carp were first discovered in the Kansas River in 1993 and the silver jumping carp started showing up in 2006, a few weeks ago, huge numbers of carp appeared.  Officials are crediting this year's heavy rainfall amounts for creating ideal spawning conditions.  Duane Chapman of the U.S. Geological Survey stated that the fish could thrive in lakes, as that is the carp's natural habitat in Asia........

Riverbill,

Thanks keeping the site fresh, I use it daily. A few photos from last Saturday's (august 8th) beautiful sunset and a dive from the boat while the sun faded (you can see the UE plant in the distant background). The diver Rob Wilson thought he was going for the gold. I hail out of Harbor Point Yacht Club in the boat "Eye Value".

Keep up the great work and postings...

    Grafton Ferry Road.......

HI BILL

COULD YOU GIVE THESE GALS A (free) PLUG? THEY HAVE THE RESTAURANT AT SMARRT FIELD CALLED FLYGIRLS ON GRAFTON FERRY ROAD IN ST CHARLES, CLOSE TO ALL THE MARINAS.

THE FOOD IS GREAT AND THE PLACE IS CLEAN. DURING THESE TOUGH TIMES WE ALL NEED TO TRY TO HELP EACH OTHER. THEY HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING BECAUSE OF THE LIGHT TRAFFIC ALONG GRAFTON FERRY WITH THE FERRY CLOSED AND JUST THE DECLINING AMOUNT OF RIVER PEOPLE AROUND DUE TO HIGH WATER.

ANYTHING WOULD BE APPRECIATED

THANK YOU
