Bill:
You have probably gotten a ton of flood pics so I had to throw in one with a
little lighter touch, namely the "Lake Luttrell" one. Also put the river
levels on them so everyone has a reference point. Hopefully it won't be
long until I am walking downhill instead of uphill to my boat dock. By the
way "Sharky's Island" should be open Wednesday so if you are in need of a
"Boat Ride" come on out and enjoy the "Sharky's Water Taxi".

Water Patrol announces results of safe boating effort

This past weekend, the Missouri State Water Patrol participated in “Operation Dry Water,” a national campaign to discourage the operation of boats by intoxicated operators. The June 25-27 campaign encouraged states to increase their presence on waterways by using check points and saturation patrols to reduce drug and alcohol impairment on the water.

The Missouri State Water Patrol conducted special enforcement operations in three locations around the state. Sobriety check points were set up on Table Rock Lake and Lake of the Ozarks. A saturation patrol was conducted on the Niangua River in Dallas and Laclede counties.

Results of special enforcement operations:

● 6 arrests for boating while intoxicated
16 citations for drug violations
13 arrests for minors in possession of alcohol
11 citations for other safety violations
45 warnings were issued for safety violations

In 2008, a national study showed 17 percent of boating fatalities involved an operator who was impaired by drugs or alcohol. Last year in Missouri, there were 17 boating fatalities, four of which involved alcohol.

Flood of 2008....The Alton Telegraph reported that the water levels were finally starting to fall

US Army Corps of Engineers Press Release

Corps of Engineers Monitoring River Stages

June 29, St. Louis – The St. Louis District is continuing to closely watch as river stages in the St. Louis region crest or begin to slowly fall. The Mississippi River crested at St. Louis slightly over 35 feet yesterday, June 28, and has begun a gradual fall of a few inches a day. The Mississippi River at Grafton, Ill., already crested at 26.8 feet, however, due to high river stages coming out of the Illinois River, very little fall will be experienced in the coming days. The District is continuing to closely coordinate with the National Weather Service and Corps of Engineers Districts upstream on the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

“Although river stages in the region are high, there is no need for immediate alarm,” said Col. Thomas O’Hara, Commander for the St. Louis District. “Local, state and federal authorities have plans in place and are prepared to handle levels currently being forecasted.”

Col. O’Hara added however, that due to the high stages and slow fall of river levels, it wouldn’t take much precipitation upstream to bring river levels back to where they were a day or two ago.

Elsewhere in the District, Corps of Engineers personnel have contacted local drainage and levee districts to find out if they need any flood fighting materials, like sandbags or plastic sheeting or to identify any areas where they need assistance.

Along the Wood River Levee, adjacent to Melvin Price Locks and Dam, additional monitoring and ponding of water will be visible from the berm highway. Since gravity drains in the interim dikes have been closed to prevent Mississippi River water from flowing into the ponding area, pumps have been installed at the dikes to evacuate water that accumulates behind them during any local, interior rain events.

Mississippi River Near Winona, Minnesota

Mississippi River Levels Being Drawn Down.........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in collusion with the Water Level Management Task Force, began drawing the level of the Mississippi River Pool 6 on June 18, 2010.  The water draw-down is slated to run through September 30, 2010 and intends to reduce water levels at Winona by about 6 inches.  The end result of the lower River levels is the exposing of some 500 acres of mudflats, which will help make the flats a more favorable environment for the growth and reproduction of critical aquatic vegetation........

Boating and the July 4th Holiday: Does Alcohol Mix with Water?

The Busiest Boating Day of the Year and Alcohol's Influence

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 29, 2010 - The July 4th holiday is expected to bring record numbers of boaters, sailors and anglers to the water. Along with hot dogs and apple pie, alcohol will be on hand for many on this national day of celebration. Boat Owners Association of The United States(BoatU.S.) has three tips that can help ensure it's also a safe holiday for everyone aboard.

Designated drivers are good - but don't forget your guests. "To use a designated skipper would seem like welcome advice," says BoatU.S. Director of Damage Avoidance Bob Adriance. "However, having a designated skipper aboard may suggest to everyone else that they are free to drink as much as they want, and that's the trouble."

The BoatU.S. insurance claims files don't lie -- statistics show that sober boating guests are much more likely to be injured on a boat than the captain and regular crew. Adding alcohol to the mix only increases the risk for injury.

Adriance says guests' lack of basic boating skills are the main reason. "Someone who boats infrequently may not be familiar with wakes, docking, or boarding, which increases their chances of falling overboard," he said. "Boat operators need to really ask themselves, how much attention can I devote to watching inebriated guests while trying to safely make my way home?"

For the boat's operator, even small amounts of alcohol increase the risk of an accident. The July 4th celebrations mean many boaters will be running at night. The challenge is that small amounts of alcohol lower a boater's ability to discern moving objects, faint lights, and unlit objects on the water, and it also takes very little alcohol to affect a person's night vision. Glare from a masthead light or the moon can significantly impair night vision when blood alcohol levels are as low as .01%, or about half a beer.

Alcohol also affects peripheral vision. Even small amounts affect a person's ability to judge the speed and distance of an approaching boat -- all conditions expected on recreational boating's busiest traffic time of the year.

Sun, wind and waves take their toll. On the holiday weekend many boaters, sailors or anglers will stay out all day. However, a few hours in the sun combined with the wind, motion, noise and vibration typically found aboard a boat can produce "boater's hypnosis," which reduces an operator's performance as much as alcohol would. U.S. Coast Guard tests found that an operator who has two beers and four hours of exposure to the elements can be expected to demonstrate the equivalent performance of a rested operator who has had six beers.

The best advice? "Know when it's time to call it a day and save the alcohol for when you are safely back home," said BoatU.S. Foundation Director of Boating Safety Chris Edmonston.

For more information on alcohol and boating, go to www.BoatUS.com/foundation/guide/trip_12.html. To see how some boaters faired in a test of operating a boat under the influence, visit www.BoatUS.com/foundation/Findings/new_alcohol_boating.htm .

Mississippi And Illinois Rivers

With Recent Storms, Officials Are Monitoring River Levels........

Officials in the counties surrounding the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are keeping a close eye on the levels of the Rivers.  The National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service has stated that the levels of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers are on the way down.  Low lying areas of Grafton, Elsah and Chautauqua, Illinois are being affected by the high water.  The village of Hamburg is watching the River to determine if sandbagging is needed.  This village, located in Calhoun County, does not normally alert the media when sandbagging efforts are undertaken, but volunteers may put their name on a "Go To" list by contacting the Hamburg Mayor........

    Boat Flies....  Lands On Shore....

The Illinois Conservation Police are looking into an incident where a boat operator struck an object, went airborne and landed ashore.  The vessel's pilot, Paul Reimer, states that he hit an object in the water, lost control of his vessel, causing it to go airborne, striking a vessel on a lift prior to landing on terra firma.  An occupant of Reimer's boat fled the scene, but was later apprehended.  Reimer has been cited for operating a vessel without current registration, and may face additional charges depending on the outcome of the investigation........

ASTORIA, Ore.........

Petty Officer 1st Class David Ramsey, a boatswain's mate at Station Cape Disappointment, Wash., encourages recreational fishermen to stay safe on the Columbia River near Hammond, Ore., Saturday, June 26, 2010. Ramsey's effort was part of Operation Dry Water, an initiative to inform boaters of the dangers of boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol and to enforce laws concerning BUI and safe boating. The Coast Guard contends that this BUI crackdown is just as important to public safety as the enforcement of drunk driving laws. The fishermen were found to be in compliance with all boating laws.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jefferson City

Coast Guard closes section of Mississippi River to recreational boating due to high water

The United States Coast Guard has temporarily restricted recreational boating traffic on the Mississippi River in St. Charles County between mile markers 226 and 229 on the west back channel of Dardienne Island due to flooding conditions. The operation of boats in the restricted area could cause excessive wakes which could damage property along the river. Recreational boaters are reminded to listen to marine band channel 16 for broadcast notices to mariners for updates to this operating restriction.

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

Every so often we find ourselves out on the water when we can't see where we are going due to a change in atmospheric conditions. Such changes could be the result of rain, snow or temperature variation, just to name a few. When visibility conditions begin to deteriorate, we refer to it as "restricted visibility."

Navigation Rule 3 defines "restricted Visibility" as "any condition in which visibility is restricted by fog, mist, falling snow, heavy rainstorms, sandstorms or any other similar causes." Wait a minute, did that say "sandstorms?" That's right; a sandstorm along the coast could have an impact on your visibility. Restricted visibility could even be the result of smoke from a land-based fire.

In short, anything that interferes with your ability to see where you are going is a state of restricted visibility. Restricted visibility is one of the strongest arguments for having a current chart onboard. And, no . . . . an artist's rendering of the area on a restaurant place-mat is not a substitute for a good chart.

A current chart will show the location of the buoys, dayboards and other aids to navigation that you need to find your way to your destination. Your chart also provides a few other things that can be useful, especially in restricted visibility. One thing is the water depth, which is represented by the "soundings" printed on the chart.

When you are following a compass course to your next "way point," you can monitor your position by checking the charted depths against your depth-finder readings. Knowing the charted depths can help you to make a course correction, keeping you on course and preventing you from running aground.

Your chart also provides distances from which you can calculate your "estimated time of arrival" to your next waypoint. If you know that you are making 6 knots and that your next way point is 3 nautical miles away, you can expect to be there in approximately a 1/2 an hour. If you don't see the buoy or dayboard that you are heading for in 30 minutes, it's time to stop and regroup.

There are times when the visibility is restricted, but not to the extent that it would be in dense fog or heavy rain. In those cases, your visibility is hampered, but you can still see for several miles. Your ability to see aids to navigation will be somewhat less than it is on a on a clear day. Your chart can help you there too.

There is information on your chart that indicates the number of nautical miles from which you should be able to see a lighted aid to navigation. The standard for that mileage is "10 nautical mile meteorological visibility." Visibility is the measure of your ability to see objects through the atmosphere.

You may see the notation "5 M" on your chart in the description of a light. What that means is when the visibility is 10 miles, the light in question can be seen from 5 nautical miles away. In restricted visibility, you would not expect to see that light from the same distance.

Your chart has many features that can help you in varying conditions of visibility. It pays to keep it current and onboard!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Boat Race For Backstoppers... Cancelled

RiverBills received the following e-mail from Sue Mcmahan

To whom it may concern,

With great regrets we have no choice but to change the date of the Boat Race for Backstoppers at Portage Des Sioux. With the current river levels and the projected levels and length of time the river is to remain above flood stage there is simply not enough time to prepare the race site. The new date is September 11th. (9-11) same time, same place, some entertainment may change but in all honesty with the significance of this historic date and the event to benefit the Backstoppers this could actually be a blessing to unfold. Please take the time to inform all the contacts you have worked with on this event of the new date. We want as many of the sponsors and supporters to be informed by our committee members of the date change as possible. We will make a formal press release next Monday.

We want to thank all of you that have worked so hard to make this event happen and we apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause you, we can’t control mother nature!

Again we thank you and it’s time to regroup, learn from our weak areas and move on with the best event on the Mississippi River!!!

Mississippi River Along The Great River Road

Good Samaritan Pulls Woman From Sinking Car........

While driving along the Great River Road, Anthony "Tony" Sparks and his girlfriend Amanda Moxey came across a land slide that left debris across the highway.  Sparks circled around to clean some of the debris from the roadway and witnessed a car driven by Barbara Nowack strike an object, blow a tire, drive through a void in the guardrail and plunge into the Mississippi River.  Sparks dashed to the River's edge and dove in after the car.  Sparks was able to free Nowack, and assist her to shore.  Luckily, other than soreness and bruises, no injuries were reported........

During the Support The Troops Poker Run, 17 year old John Overbey jumped his PWC over a cruiser wake, directly into the path of a 43 foot Skater, Bad Moon Rising.  Overbey's PWC was struck by the Skater.   Bad Moon Rising was participating in the Support The Troops Poker Run.  Overbey suffered a shoulder injury, a bruised lung and a laceration to the back of the head.  The PWC was totaled, but the Skater did not suffer serious damage.  Although the Missouri State Water Patrol called Bad Moon Rising's speed excessive, no citations have been issued at this time........

Hey Bill we were at Sharky's this afternoon when the storm blew through. The power went out, the courtesy dock blocked the ferry route. It was pretty wild but we still had a good time. Killer sunset after the storm. Heres a few pics.

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Classic Boats Descend Upon Alton Marina........

Over the weekend, several hundred visitors headed to the Alton Marina to check out the fifth annual antique and classic boat show.  The event was sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.  Alton Marina manager, Karen Baker-Brncic, stated that the event went well, but mentioned disappointment at the high level of the Mississippi River, as it prevented antique and classic cruisers from reaching the marina........

Metro East Levees

   Suggested Levee Fix Raises Issues........

A proposed fix for the Metro East Levee system has raised the ire of an environmentalist.  Kathy Andria, president of the America Bottom Conservancy, and chair of the Illinois Sierra Club Floodplain Task Force, is concerned about the suggestion to use fly ash to repair the Metro East Levee deficiencies.  Coal fly ash contains many toxins, including arsenic, mercury and dioxins.  Andria states that these contaminants could leach into the Mississippi River and/or the aquifer.  Corps spokesman, Alan Dooley, said that there are different types of fly ash, some hazardous and the U.S. EPA added that the "right kind can be used"........

Asian Carp Update

   Sen. Durbin Wants Carp Czar..........

With the discovery of an Asian carp past the electric fish barriers, Illinois Senator, Dick Durbin has requested that President Obama appoint a carp czar.  The czar would coordinate carp fighting efforts put forth by federal, state and local agencies.  Durbin also intends to introduce a bill that will have the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers looking into a hydrological separation between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River basin.  Durbin expects the Corps to come up with the report within 18 months........

Jimmy Buffett And Pals Donate Animal Rescue Boat........

Friday, a unique animal rescue vessel was donated to the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory by Jimmy Buffett.  The vessel was christened with a pitcher of Buffett's own brew, Landshark.  Buffett, who graduated from USM in 1969, partnered up with Dragonfly Boatworks to create the Shallow Water Attention Terminal, or SWAT.  The vessel is one-of-a-kind, and was created with the input of animal rescue workers.........

5th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival at Alton Marina - Alton, Illinois

Hi Bill,
I thought you might want to see these photos from the St. Louis Boat Show this past February. The Antique and Classic boats will be on display again in their more “natural habitat.” Instead of braving the bitter cold of our St. Louis winters, boat enthusiasts can enjoy these beauties while soaking up some sun this coming weekend at the Alton Marina.

Boats will be on display on the parking lot (and rising river permitting) dockside in the beautiful Alton Marina. We hope everyone can join us for this special event.

Thanks!
Dale Roth, Mississippi Valley ACBS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jefferson City

Missouri State Water Patrol to participate in national effort to reduce boating while intoxicated incidents and raise safety

The Missouri State Water Patrol announces it will participate in a safe boating campaign that spans virtually every U.S. state and territory. "Operation Dry Water" is spearheaded by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and aims to raise awareness and reduce the incidence boating while intoxicated.

The campaign will be conducted June 25 – 27. The Water Patrol will be conducting multiple check points and saturation patrols on lakes and rivers throughout Missouri during the June 25-27 weekend. Nationally, alcohol and drug impairment is a contributing factor in more than one-fifth of all boating fatality accidents.

Boaters that come across a checkpoint should be prepared to be stopped as part of this effort. Officers will make brief contact with the operator and perform a basic safety check of the boat's equipment. If the officer suspects an operator is under the influence of intoxicants, the operator will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test. All efforts will be made to keep the process as brief as possible and to ensure that traffic does not back up. The Missouri State Water Patrol appreciates the public's cooperation.

The Missouri State Water Patrol reminds everyone to "boat smart." If alcohol will be included as part of your next excursion, be sure to designate a sober captain.

Mississippi River Around St. Louis, Missouri

As The Mississippi River Rises, Tourism Drops..........

The high water that has lapped over the banks of the Mississippi is causing many problems around the St. Louis area, some of which are real, and some imaginary.  There were concerns in Grafton, Illinois about a sign close to Alton, stating that the River  Road was closed.  However, the sign did not specify where the River Road was closed.  The sign has since been corrected to say that the road is closed past Grafton.  In St. Louis, officials are not expecting trouble with next week's Fair St. Louis, as the majority of the flooded areas are cordoned off for the fair anyway........

Cedar Hill Closed This Weekend

Cedar Hill has decided to close this weekend. We are still high and dry however; with the ferries shut down, the river warnings out and Grafton flooded it makes it difficult for our customers to get to us.

Hope to see all of you next weekend.

Have a great weekend.

This Weekend's Longshot Saloon Bike Rally...

   Cancelled

We regret to inform you that the flooding of the Mississippi River has caused circumstances out of our control. Now we are in the unfortunate position to have to postpone our Summer Bike Rally scheduled for this Saturday, June 26th. The flooding has affected our normal space, and now we are unable to accommodate the amount of customers anticipated. All efforts at this time need to be towards addressing this flood. Business is still open and if you decide to venture out, please use back entrance located on LeClaire. We will have entertainment, weekend specials and the Longshot Ladies! We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are hoping to postpone this event to Saturday, July 31th. For any motorcyclist that attends with your first drink purchase, you get another drink free along with a Longshot Saloon koozie, Our Treat! Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Guard To Help With Northwestern Missouri Flooding........

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has announced that he plans to send Missouri National Guard troops to northwestern Missouri.  The troops will be assisting with the additional flooding expected from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' water releases from an upstream reservoir.  At this point, the Missouri River has been up for several days, closing roads, forcing the evacuation of homes, destroying crops and even overtopping some levees........

2005 GEORGETOWN FORESTRIVER 33 FOOT MOTOR HOME IN GREAT CONDITION AND BARELY USED FOR SALE!!

absolutely love this RV but we recently rented a lot at the River and no longer have a need to travel. We are wanting to just buy a nice pull behind camper to leave down there and seems to be a waste to have the motor home now. The motor home has 10,500 miles on it and was taken care of very well. We performed regular maintenance on it and will be happy to let anyone interested in it take a look. WE WILL NOT RENT OUT FOR THE WEEKEND OR LEASE SO DON'T EVEN ASK. WE ARE SELLING THE MOTOR HOME FOR $55,000 NO TRADES. We put a very large down deposit on the RV and are asking right at our payoff amount so this is a very good price especially considering the excellent shape and low mileage. Additional info is as followed:

Corps of Engineers monitoring river stages

June 24, St. Louis – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’, St. Louis District is stepping up monitoring

of flood protection systems and communities as river stages continue to rise across the St. Louis region.

Some of the public is already experiencing inconveniences like inundated roads and closed floodgates due to rising river stages. In the days to come, additional floodgates will be closed as the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries continue to rise. The National Weather Service currently predicts that the Mississippi River will crest more than five feet above flood stage at 35.8 feet this Sunday at St. Louis and at 25.9 feet at Grafton on Saturday. However, any significant rainfall upriver of the metropolitan area could change these forecasts.

In St. Louis, the U.S. Coast Guard has activated the Waterway Action Plan for the St. Louis Harbor. The WAP provides general information and target gage readings to be used as a guideline for activities on the waterways in the Mississippi River basin. It is reviewed annually by members of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and river industry representatives and goes into effect at St. Louis when the river stage is at 25.0 feet and rising.

Currently, the Coast Guard prohibits recreational traffic thru the St. Louis Harbor. For commercial traffic, a safety zone has been established, requiring southbound tows greater than 600 feet in length, excluding the towboat, to limit transit to daylight hours only. Additionally, all towing vessels should have a minimum of 250 horsepower for each loaded barge and should proceed at the slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in order to minimize wake damage to personal property.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis District closed Kaskaskia Lock and Dam due to high water. That lock and dam closes when river elevation is projected to crest greater than 380 feet NGVD. This morning, the elevation was 380 feet and a forecasted crest at 381 feet or greater, depending on precipitation upriver on the Mississippi River. Current NWS predictions do not predicate the need to close any other locks in the St. Louis District.

Elsewhere across the region, St. Louis District personnel are contacting drainage and levee districts as well as communities to learn of their concerns and find out whether they need any supplies like sandbags, plastic sheeting or pumps.

Along the Wood River Levee, adjacent to Melvin Price Locks and Dam, additional monitoring and ponding of water will be visible from the berm highway. These interim risk reduction measures and others are in accordance with the operating plan that was coordinated with the City of Alton, local businesses and the Wood River Drainage and Levee District.

USACE monitoring rivers 2/2/2

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety experts and other authorities want to remind long time residents and inform newcomers of several measures they may take to best ensure their own safety.

  • Keep up with weather reports and other notices. The media works to get the most up to date information out. Listen to and watch news reports so you are not caught unprepared. If local emergency authorities advise any action, follow their directions immediately.

  • If you live in a flood-prone area have a plan. Know what you will take with you, where you will go and who you will inform when you get there.

  • Don’t drive into water on roads. Road surfaces may be damaged or gone and rapidly flowing water can move a car into danger quickly and without warning. If you encounter water on the road, turn around and seek another route. There is no short cut to safety.

  • Use extreme caution when in the vicinity of flooded areas. Stay well clear of flood waters and banklines as conditions change rapidly.

Mississippi River At Lock And Dam No.15

Attempts To Rescue Deer Stranded On Debris Fail........

A deer that was stranded on debris behind Lock & Dam No.15 in Davenport, Iowa did not survive a rescue attempt.  A bystander noticed the deer standing on a muddy bar close to the Iowa bank.  The deer was trying save itself when rescue crews arrived.  The deer was not in a very safe location.  The rescuers typically try to get as close as they can to the animal without contacting it, but they will not risk injury to a person during an attempt to save an animal........

Missourians asked to celebrate freedom from invasive species July 4

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Exotic plants and animals threaten America’s way of outdoor life.

JEFFERSON CITY–Under threat of attack, people rally in defense of their homeland. That is exactly what the Missouri Department of Conservation is asking citizens to do as they head to the great outdoors for Independence Day weekend.

“Not too many years ago, you could travel around the country without too much thought about spreading pests that could devastate our natural world,” said Invasive Species Coordinator Tim Banek. “Today, we need everyone to be aware of invasive species when they travel, even short distances.”

Two prime examples, said Banek, are the zebra mussel and the emerald ash borer. Neither was found in Missouri 20 years ago. Both now have footholds here and require constant vigilance by boaters, anglers, hunters and campers to limit their spread.

In the case of the zebra mussels, preventive measures start by knowing where the fingernail-sized, black and white mollusks already are established. Lake Taneycomo, Bull Shoals Reservoir, Lake of the Ozarks, Pomme de Terre Lake, Lake Lotawana, the Osage, Missouri and Mississippi rivers and the mouth of the Meramec River all are known to harbor the prolific mussels.

Boaters and anglers who use their boats in more than one lake or stream are urged to remove any clinging vegetation, drain and inspect boats and trailers for zebra mussels and allow them to dry for at least five days before relaunching in a new location. Flushing live wells, bilges and motor cooling systems with hot water or chlorine bleach also is important. More information about zebra mussel prevention is available at invasivespeciesinfo.gov/aquatics/main.shtml  ... click here to continue reading on MDC website

Intoxicated Boater And Child Found After 6 Hour Search........

The Goodhue County Water Patrol spent six hours on Sunday evening looking for an inebriated boater with his child aboard.  A concerned citizen reported a very drunk boater on the Mississippi River and a youngster aboard.  The Water Patrol responded to the area, but did not find the boater.  The search was called off at 2 am, and resumed Monday morning. The drunken boater, Charles Regan, was found near a marina, but the child had already been left with family on shore.  This was Regan's fourth alcohol related crime in the last 10 years........

Bighead Asian Carp Found in Chicago Area Waterway System

The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC) announced today that one Bighead Asian carp has been found in Lake Calumet along the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS). This is the first physical specimen that has been found in the CAWS above the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s Electric Barrier System.

RCC agencies will enact immediate measures to remove any additional Asian carp found during sampling efforts, including but not limited to electrofishing and netting.

“We set out on a fact finding mission and we have found what we were looking for,” said John Rogner, Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). “This is important evidence and the more information we have about where Asian carp are, the better chance we have of keeping them out of the Great Lakes.”

The Bighead carp was found in Lake Calumet which sits between T. J. O’Brien Lock and Dam and Lake Michigan. The find was made in the northwest corner of the lake near Harborside Golf Course, approximately six miles downstream of Lake Michigan by a commercial fisherman contracted by the Illinois DNR during routine sampling efforts in the area.

The fish was measured to be 34.6 inches long and weighed 19.6 pounds. This capture represents the first Asian carp discovered above the electric barrier system and just the second in the Chicago Area Waterway System........click here to go to the IDNR website and read more

Lake Of The Ozarks E Coli Update

   Lake Tests Clean.... Again....

Over the past week, over 50 water samples were taken from the Gravois and Osage arms of the Lake of the Ozarks.  And the good news is that none of the test results found E. coli levels above the EPA standards.  Over 100 samples have been taken from 23 Lake of the Ozarks locations in 2010 and only one cove is raising concerns.  On June 4th a sample taken from Porter Mill Hollow contained 275.5 E. coli colonies per milliliter of water.  The EPA standard is 235 colonies/milliliter.  Another test is planned for the first week in July........

The Pictures of the Day ......were sent to us by Jim, Vivian, & River Dog "Waldo"

Dear Riverbill

Above are a couple of pictures of our camp site in good times and bad times. We camp at “River’s Edge RV Park”. We have been there for about 9 years give or take a year. We love the place! It’s wonderful! A great place for your family! We enjoy the river so much. In the past we have had to move out maybe once or twice a year. But in the last few years we are moving out 4 or 5 times a year. In 2008 we lost all of the season. Now it looks like we will be losing all of this season or close to losing it, anyway. My question for you and your viewers is “Why?” What has changed with the river that we are flooding every time the clouds sneeze? Something isn’t right. We are heart sick! Everyone who camps in pool 26 will soon be looking for higher ground to camp and recreate on if this keeps up.

   Grafton Prepping For High Water........

As the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are on the rise, some Grafton business owners are getting ahead of the game by moving some items to higher ground.  Steve Kasten, owner of the Hawg Pit BBQ Barn, designed and furnished the BBQ Barn for short term and rapid moves in time of high water.  The BBQ Barn's location is usually the first place in Grafton to flood.  Joe and Jan DeSherlia owners of the Grafton Harbor, moved their shed, in case the river rises past their sidewalk.........

Conservation Police Step Up Boating Under the Influence Enforcement This Weekend

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Conservation Police Officers (CPOs) will be out in full force this weekend – on the look-out for boaters operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The increased enforcement is part of a national coordinated effort of stepped-up enforcement called Operation Dry Water.

“We want people to have fun, but at the same time to be safe out on the water,” said IDNR Office of Law Enforcement Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Alcohol use is one of the leading factors in fatal recreational boating accidents in the state of Illinois and across the country. We recommend that all boats have a designated skipper on board.”

Impaired boaters caught this weekend can expect penalties. In Illinois, operating under the influence (OUI) is a Class A misdemeanor for the first offense. It is punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and/or up to $2,500 in fines.

“Our CPOs work hard throughout the year to make sure boaters are safe on Illinois public waters,” added Chief Gutierrez. “We have zero tolerance for anyone found operating a boat under the influence at any time; however, boaters will see a stepped up effort as we approach the 4th of July holiday.”

Operation Dry Water was launched in 2009 by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in partnership with the United States Coast Guard and the IDNR to draw public attention to the hazards of OUI. Operation Dry Water is a national weekend of OUI detection and enforcement aimed at reducing the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities. For more information, visit www.operationdrywater.org.

Asian Carp Update

Asian Carp Found Beyond The Electric Barrier........

A bighead carp has been discovered in Lake Calumet, which is about six miles north of the electric barriers installed to keep the carp from reaching Lake Michigan.  Back in December, carp DNA was found in Chicago's Little Calumet Harbor, kicking off river poisonings and the commitment of $78.5 million from the White House to fight the invasive species.  The discovery of an actual carp north of the electric barriers has renewed the call for the closure of the Chicago Locks........

US Army Corps of Engineers News Release

Open House Onboard the Dredge Potter in Alton, Ill.

ALTON, IL – The Meeting of the Rivers Foundation and the St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will host the first ever Dredge Potter Open House, a special opportunity to tour a working Mississippi River dustpan dredge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the National Great Rivers Museum. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27. The purpose of the event is to enlighten visitors to the role the Dredge Potter and its 50 member crew has during channel maintenance on the Mississippi River.

The Dredge Potter is a working dredge that uses a dustpan head to excavate sandy material from the river bottom. Built in 1932, the Potter is the oldest active boat in the Army inventory. Measuring 240 feet long, and displacing 1514 light tons, the dredge has 3 decks and tours will pass through the cookhouse, pump and generator room and pilot house. Originally, powered by steam, the dredge was modernized in 2001 and now has an all new stern along with a diesel electric power plant.

Vessel tours are free and open to the public. This is a first come, first serve event. Visitors must be able to climb stairs to board the vessel. The event will be cancelled if raining. Tours of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam will also be available during the open house. The National Great Rivers Museum is located adjacent to the Melvin Price Locks & Dam, off River Heritage Parkway (IL-143) two miles south of the Clark Bridge near Alton, IL. For more information, please call 618-462-6979.

Missouri River Flood Update

Corps Increasing Water Releases At Gavins Point Dam........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they are increasing the amount of water being released through the Gavins Point Dam, from 15,000 cubic feet/second to 20,000 cf/s.  The releases will gradually be increased through Saturday, until reaching 35,000 cf/s.  The releases are needed to prevent the overtopping of the dam's spillway gates.  The increased flow is expected to slow the River's retreat to it's banks, but will not contribute to flooding........

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 200

06/23/2010

Daily stats
Start: 6:30 AM - Little Falls, NY
Finish: 5:00 PM - Utica, NY (Lock 20)
Time: 10:30 (2:30 spent in town w/ Otto and Larry)
Daily dist: 24 miles
Total dist: 3700+
Companions: Otto
Weather: Mostly cloudy, high of 80, west wind 7-10 mph
Notes: Very nice camping at lock 20
As I was working my way north along the Atlantic Intracoastal from April through late May, one of the biggest challenges I faced at the end of many days was finding a suitable camp site at which to spend the night. With a fair dose of creativity I did manage to come up with fairly decent places to camp most nights. Sometimes, however, things didn't go so well and I got downright desperate to find a place to land for the night. Regardless of how desperate I may have been, a camp spot had to meet two simple criteria:

1) It had to be far enough above the water so that a large wake at high tide wouldn’t flood it out.

2) It had to be at least as big as my tent.

Those seem like simple enough stipulations but many times I had to stretch one or both of those rules in order to call a spot of land campable.

Missouri State Water Patrol New Release

Flooding Closes Big Lake in Northwest Missouri to Recreational Boating

The Missouri State Water Patrol has announced a recreational boating restriction on Big Lake in Holt County, Missouri due to flooding. Because wakes caused by boats have the potential to damage flooded structures and compromise saturated levees, all recreational boating traffic is prohibited.

There are numerous homes bordering Big Lake and Big Lake State Park. The Missouri State Water Patrol has officers assigned to enforce the boating restriction.

The Par-A-Dice Riverboat Casino has not left it's mooring in 11 years, but for a few hours Wednesday morning, that will change.  Owner of the Casino, Boyd Gaming Corp. has planned a three hour cruise in order to comply with new U.S. Coast Guard regulations.  The Coast Guard now requires an annual cruise to ensure that the vessel still functions.  The Par-A-Dice used to offer cruises 10 times daily, but quit in 1999........

06/22/2010

Finish: 7:00 PM - Little Falls, NY
Time: 8;00 (4 hours in little falls)

Total dist: 3700+
Companions: Otto
Weather: Mostly cloudy, high of 80, rain late in day
Notes: Little Falls is worth the stop
Hi everybody, this is Otto filling in for Jake. He’s too tired to write tonight… I think I wore him out.

I woke up this morning at 6 like any normal person might, but of course Jake had already been up for two hours. After about an hour of preparation we hit the water leaving our lovely campsite island at lock 14. We made good time through the first lock of day, lock 15, as we paddled on placid water. On our way to lock 16 we decided to take a break near what used to be an aqueduct and walked through the shallow water covering it’s ruins.....Click on Daily Blog http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Odd Items Cleaned Up During Cleanup........

Of the tons of garbage picked up along the Mississippi River during last week's River cleanup, many oddities were recovered.  The cleaners not only picked up the usual cans, bottles and styrofoam, but also an unopened bottle of syrup, the hood and trunk from a '56 Lincoln Continental, and even an unopened can of Schlitz, circa 1971........

Upper Mississippi River/Tri-States Region

Is Tri-States Area Prepared To Handle Disaster?

While a disaster on the magnitude of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is not likely in the Mississippi River, questions have arisen about disaster preparedness in the Tri-states region.  Although unlikely to occur, the barge traffic on the Mississippi River carried many hazardous types of cargos, including coal, fertilizer and lumber.  Barge companies are required to train their employees in the handling of hazardous materials.  In the event of a spill, the U.S. Coast Guard would step in, and many agencies would respond, including law enforcement, fire departments, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, EPA as well as federal and local Departments of Natural Resources........

A Fishy Tale

Record Blue Marlin Disqualified From Tournament........

During the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, a rule violation amongst the winning crew cost the victors a $900,000 prize.  Apparently, a for hire mate did not have a fishing license,  although he stated he did.  The license issue was discovered during a lie detector test the winning crew must participate in.  As a result, a record setting 883 lb blue marlin was disqualified.  The winning blue marlin weighed in at 528.3 lbs, and the tournament's record fish has reverted to an 831 pounder caught in 2000........
