Mississippi Queen Update

   Mississippi Queen Is Being Dismantled.........

After decaying along a wharf since 2006, the once proud paddlewheeler, the Mississippi Queen, is being salvaged for her machinery.  The vessel's hull may be saved, as the steel is so thick.  The Queen was constructed during the early '70s for $27 million.  She had 5 decks, containing 207 cabins, and underwent a multi-million dollar make-over in 1989 that added some modern touches including a spa pool. One item that does not have a date with the scrap pile is the Queen's 700 lb bell.  The bell was donated to the Howard Steamboat Museum located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, where the Queen was constructed by Jeff Boat between 1973 and 1975........

Mississippi River At Burlington, Iowa

A Man Was Hit By Lightning At Steamboat Days.........

Around midnight on Friday, a man was hit by lightning in the Burlington Steamboat Days complex.  Ambulance crews and Burlington police responded, as did reinforcements from Danville, and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.  The man's condition was not reported.  Following the lightning strike, rescue workers provided assistance to a woman who was hyperventilating.  While all of this was going on, a man fell into the Mississippi River, but was able to swim to shore.  He was seen fleeing the scene........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 195
06/18/2010

Daily stats
Start: 5:30 AM - Hudson River Island State Park - Near Colombiaville, NY
Finish: 3:00 PM - Entrance to the Erie Canal - Troy, NY
Time: 9:30 Hours
Daily dist: 30 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick, Alan, and John
Weather: Very calm, hot, and sunny
Notes: Locked through at the Troy Lock leaving “sea level” for the first time since locking into the Industrial Canal in New Orleans last January.
With 30 miles to cover during the day, much of it upstream against the last of any tidal current I will see on this trip, Bill and I got an early start on the water. We were rewarded for the early start by a couple hours of the end of the incoming tide and absolutely mirror smooth water shrouded in morning mist.

A Big Fish Story

A South Dakota Fish Takes A Trip....  To Kentucky....

Recently, the State Game, Fish and Parks Department fisheries biologists at Chamberlain, South Dakota received a call from a fisherman in Kentucky, stating that he caught a fish.  And that fish happened to have a South Dakota jaw tag.  A GF&P biologist, Jason Sorensen stated that the fish travel rather far distances, depending on the water conditions. The U.S. GS states that the paddlefish are one of the largest freshwater fishes that live in North America.  Sorensen stated that the GF&P tags the fish primarily to observe angler exploitation rates, but biologists use the information to track fish movements........

Blessing of the Fleet...

Amateur Videographers to record Blessing of the Fleet

Bill:

As you know, the Blessing of the Fleet is largely a work of love with many people donating their time.

I'm looking for few volunteers to videotape the Blessing of the Fleet from different vantage points.

Ideally , these folks would have newer, digital cameras that use digital tape. (as opposed to recording onto a DVD. They can record directly onto a hard drive but then would need to bring the camera to the computer for which we'd edit.. Tape is really preferred.)

They should also have a tripod, or have access to one) although if they are really steady (or drunk), it might do.

My plan is to have someone video tape from the shrine (tripod needed), from a boat , from Palisades Yacht Club upper deck, and, perhaps from a plane (no tripod needed there!) Don't know if I've secured a plane ride yet.

I'll "coach 'em up" about what to shoot and give them any tips they need.

They'll need to provide the tape and turn them over to me so I can edit them. I'll try to return the tapes but there are no guarantees as I don't personally do the editing.

If you could post this on your site, I'd appreciate it.

Lower Mississippi River

Experts Suggest Diverting The Mississippi River To Combat Oil Slick........

Experts are working on ways to prevent oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill from reaching the shores, and some are suggesting the use of the Mississippi River as a tool.  Upstream of the mouth of the Mississippi River lies a fork, at the Atchafalaya River, that through man made water flow diversions directs 30% of the Mississippi River's flow down the Atchafalaya River.  The experts believe that by shifting more of the Mississippi River's flow down the main channel, the extra fresh water could in fact keep the oil slick out of sensitive marshlands........

The Atchafalaya River

is a tributary of the Red and Mississippi Rivers, and is an important industrial shipping channel for Louisiana.  The Atchafalaya River empties into the Gulf of Mexico in Atchafalaya Bay, which thanks to the new delta forming in the bay, is the only portion of the Louisiana coastline that is growing........

Flash Floods

CSI: Arkansas.... Looking For Flash Flooding Clues....

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey are using hydrologic forensics to re-construct the Arkansas flash flood on the Little Missouri River in order to formulate better predictive models.  By taking the predictive models, and comparing them to historical records, scientists are better able to predict just how often floods will occur.  With this knowledge, communities will better be able to determine whether to require higher elevations for construction, warning systems or other flood control works.   The USGS also collects data to assist with day to day decisions related to flood response, recreation, business operations and resource management.........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Boat Catches Fire After Test Drive........

Wednesday afternoon, a Sunrise Beach boat broker took some prospective buyers for a spin aboard a 34 foot 1991 Baja and following the test drive, tied the vessel up at Lighthouse Marina's dock.  After disembarking from the vessel, bystanders noticed black smoke billowing from the Baja's cabin.  The Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District responded with several trucks, and were able to extinguish the blaze.  It is believed that it was an electrical fire, started by the vessel's air conditioning unit........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 194
06/17/20101 Comment(s) Daily stats
Start: 6:00 AM - Esopus Meadows, NY
Finish: 5:15 PM - Hudson River Island State Park, Near Colombiaville, NY
Time: 11:15
Daily dist: 31 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill for the first three hours then solo until he caught up at camp
Weather: Windy - NW 15-20+ temps in the low 70’s mostly cloudy
Notes: Parted ways with Bill on the water so we could paddle at our own pace.
The first and brightest highlight of the day came very early on when Bill grabbed a roll of toilet paper and a short shovel then headed down the trail on a long walk. Moments later he returned with a big smile on his face with the exciting news that he’d discovered a composting toilet (complete with toilet paper and hand sanitizer). I guess us kayak campers are easy to please

Grafton Towboat Festival Cancelled for this Weekend.....

Dredge Potter & MV Pathfinder At Alton This Weekend........

The Grafton Towboat Festival has been "Cancelled"  due to the high water and will not be re-scheduled for this year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dredge Potter and Motor Vessel Pathfinder will not dock along Grafton, Illinois seawall this weekend as scheduled either. The vessels are so large, they need at least 2 feet of seawall exposed to have enough room to properly anchor and secure the vessels and the high water levels have brought the Mississippi River to within inches of the top of the seawall at Grafton.

The Dredge Potter will be moored in Alton instead for an on-board open house on Saturday June 26, and Sunday, June 27 at the National Great Rivers Museum, located at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26.  Admission is free, and tours will run from 9 am through 5 pm........

Upper Mississippi River

Hand Soap Pollutant Found In Lake Pepin........

Researchers from the University of Minnesota have discovered dioxins in Mississippi River sediments in in Lake Pepin.  The dioxins are the result of the breakdown of a chemical, triclosan, which is used in the manufacture of antibacterial hand soap.  Triclosan breaks down in water and sunlight, forming pollutants that are accumulating in the environment, even as other forms of dioxins are declining.  Dioxins are one of the causes of fish consumption advisories in Minnesota........

Con Trios Yacht Club Updated

Updated the Con Trios Yacht Club website, www.contriosyachtclub.org as follows:

Added some more photos from the Champagne Brunch by Gary Dill and the Past Commodores Party by Gary Meinershagen. Check the "Photo Galleries" page to see all the pictures. Many Thanks to our members for their photo submissions.

Also updated the Blessing of the Fleet website, http://www.blessingofthefleetstl.com with the 2010 Poster created by Stolze Printing and some photos of the “Gypsy Rose” Pirate Ship. Blessing of the Fleet date is Saturday, July 17th.

Con Trios Yacht Club is again helping sponsor this year’s Blessing of the Fleet with donations of time and money. Several of our Board Members also sit on the Board of the Blessing of the Fleet Inc. This is a perfect marriage of one of the biggest events on the river and one of the larger Yacht Club’s. This year the theme will be “Pirates” and the “Gypsy Rose” Pirate Ship piloted by Captain Tim Woodson will be immediately behind the “Follow Me” boat in the downstream parade. Con Trios Yacht Club’s party at Grafton Harbor will immediately follow the Blessing of the Fleet, co-incidentally the Con Trios party will also feature a “Pirates” theme.

Missouri Public Beaches

Beaches In Six Missouri State Parks Closed For The Weekend........

In addition to Mark Twain State Park Beach, five more Missouri state park beaches will be closed over the weekend, due to high E. coli levels. The closed beaches are Crowder, Cuivre River, St. Joe, Thousand Hills and Wakonda.  Mark Twain was also closed due to high water.  In an effort to provide safe beach experiences, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources closes state park beaches that have a single sample over 235 E.coli colonies per 100 mililiers of water.  These are the same guidelines that the U.S. EPA uses for swimming beaches........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 193
06/16/2010

Daily stats
Start: 7:15 AM - Newburgh, NY
Finish: 3:45 PM - Esopus Meadows, NY
Time: 8:30
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick
Weather: Overcast with one spell of rain for about a half hour temps in the low 70s
Notes: Into fresh water for the rest of the trip.
Knowing that the tide would be working against us for the first six hours of the day, we figured sacrificing one mile per hour of progress was preferable to sitting around in camp until noon waiting for the tide to change. Thus we set out at just after seven this morning and made but steady progress past small river towns with a sprinkling of industry as headed upstream on the outgoing tide.....Click on Daily Blog

Wisconsin Yacht Builders Recall 350 Employees........

As the yacht building business has improved, there has been a need for two Wisconsin based yacht manufacturers to recall some 350 employees.  Carver Yacht Group, which builds Carver and Marquis yacht brands recalled 250 employees, and KCS International, manufacturer of Cruisers and Rampage yachts, has brought back 100 employees.  Together, both companies employ around 500 people, several hundred jobs down from just a few years ago, but a huge improvement over 2009........

Another Manufacturer Warns Of Operating In Gulf Oil Spill........

Steyr Motors is advising that owners of their marine diesel engines should use extra caution when operating in the oil contaminated waters in the Gulf of Mexico.  Steyr does acknowledge that operating in the contaminated waters may not be avoidable, but advises that all Steyr marine diesels be equipped with the new Steyrflush system.  Steyr also suggests inspection or replacement of raw water pump impellers, rubber raw water hoses and seal rings every 50 operating hours........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Stockton, Mo

Temporary "Boats Keeps Out" area to be established on Stockton Lake during power line construction

The Missouri State Water Patrol announces that a temporary “Boats Keep Out” area will be established on Stockton Lake while power lines are being installed across the lake. The restricted boating zone will be in effect June 21-25, 2010 and will include the area between the MO 245 Highway bridge and the power line located near the L-5 mile marker location. During this time, the Capital Electric Company will be installing five power lines across the Little Sac Arm of the lake. While work is underway, boats will not be permitted into the temporary boats keep out area to ensure safety from overhead or floating obstacles. The restricted area will be designated with exclusion buoys and floating “Boats Keep Out” signs.

Boat ramps that could potentially be affected by the restricted area are the Cedar Ridge and High Point boat ramps. Anyone using these ramps during power line work period should take this into consideration when planning a trip.

Canoe Race May Be Called On Account Of Flooding........

The Missouri River is expected to make it to 29.7 feet in the wee hours of Saturday morning.  This may force the cancellation of Saturday's Canoe for Clean Water Race.  An official decision to have the race will be made at noon on Thursday.  The executive director of the Missouri River Communities Network, Steve Johnson, has been in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard who advises that the race be cancelled.  The Coast Guard viewed mile-long collections of debris.  MRCN, who hosts the Canoe for Clean Water Race, stated that they were most likely going to cancel the race........

Upper Mississippi River Conservation

Efforts To Curtail Runoff Have Made Significant Progress........

A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has found that farmers in the upper Mississippi River basin have made considerable progress in reducing the amount of fertilizer, pesticide and sediment runoff.  The USDA does point out that there is still more more work to be done to drop pollution to acceptable levels.  Close to 51% of the area's crop acres need better controls over nitrogen loss, and about 62% of the overall cropland needs better management to keep the leaching of nitrogen and phosphorous in check.  The good news is that only about 15% of the cultivated areas have excessive sediment losses........

Metro East Levee Update

Price For Levee Repairs Now $170 Million, From $450 Million........

After four months of inspecting levees, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Protection District Council has come up with an estimated cost for repairing 64 miles worth of Metro East Levees.  Between $160 - 170 million.  These figures are quite a bit lower than the $450 million that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had estimated earlier in the year.  Metro East officials believe that they can fund the project, and get the levees accredited by using bonds guaranteed by local sales tax dollars.  Although FEMA was to make a decision on the delaying the implementation of the new flood hazard maps by June 1, they have stated that they need more time........

Gavins Dam At Record Levels, Corps Boosts Flow........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they have increased the flows from the Gavins Point Dam from 30,000 to 33,000 cubic feet per second, in an effort to prevent water from flowing over the emergency spillway gates.  The Corps' decision leveled out the reservoir's elevation at a record 1,209.7 feet.  This is level is mere inches from the top of the spillway gates.  The Corps states that when flooding downstream tapers off, they may increase the flow through the Dam to 35,000 cubic feet per second........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 192
06/15/2010

Daily stats
Start: 11:00 AM - Tellers Point - Crotonville, NY
Finish: 4:30 PM - Newburgh, NY
Time: 5:30
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3600+ miles
Companions: Bill Quick joined me at about mid day.
Weather: Clear with a nice NW breeze about 80 degrees
Notes: Hung out with the set crew waiting for the tide to change.
Yesterday was a lesson that the tidal currents on the Hudson (at least on the lower half) can make or break your daily progress. Today, by making sure I caught the flooding current, further reinforced that truth. In a little over eight hours of heads-up paddling yesterday I went only 27 miles. In only five and a half hours of easy paddling today I went 23 miles (only 4 miles less). You gotta love a nice ride.

River Warnings

Beware The Strength Of The Waterways........

When the River is flowing normally, and the weather is settled, one may not think that there is any danger in setting up camp on a low-lying gravel bar.  However, if a storm several miles upstream adds a few inches of water to the headwaters, in only a few hours, that normally flowing River can become a rising torrent, ready to reclaim it's channel, and everything in it's path........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

Did you ever think about the trouble that fuel vapors could cause on your boat? The potential danger can run through the full spectrum of probabilities. Good safety practices reduce the odds to a miniscule level, while bad safety practices raise the odds to a terrifying level.

The potential danger from a fire or an explosion varies with the type of fuel that you carry. Gasoline and diesel fuel are the categories that we deal with on recreational and small commercial vessels. They are both liquids that give off combustible vapors. The difference between the risks associated with these fuels has to do with the "flash point" of each of them.

The "flash point" of a combustible liquid is the temperature above which its vapors will ignite from a spark or open flame. The lower the flash point, the more hazardous the fuel will be at ambient temperatures. Gasoline's flash point is much lower than that of diesel fuel. Gas vapors will ignite at room temperatures and below, while diesel fuel vapors require a higher temperature to reach the flash point.

Ventilation is the key to safe fuel storage and handling onboard. If there are no fuel vapors lingering around, an open flame or spark has nothing to ignite. That's why we have a "bilge blower" in our engine compartment. Operating the bilge blower for 4-6 minutes will make at least one complete air change in an engine compartment. In the event of spilled fuel or a leak, the fumes will be flushed out.

The operation of your bilge blower for 4-6 minutes is recommended before starting and after refueling. Based on manufacturing standards, your bilge blower should be sized for the engine compartment and make at least one complete air change over the 4-6 minute time frame. In the event that you need to replace your bilge blower, replace it with a unit that has at least the same capacity.

While refueling, all hatches and openings should be closed to prevent fumes from entering your boat. Also, static electricity is another consideration while refueling, since the fuel movement through the hose and piping can cause a static charge to build up. Keep the fuel nozzle against the deck fitting of your fuel fill. That fitting is grounded and will dissipate any static charge.

In the event that you are refueling your fishing boat and fill your "rod holder" instead of your tank, all bets are off. Don't laugh; it has been done more than a few times. It is usually the result one of your "landlubber" friends just trying to be helpful.

Some rod holders in the gunwale (pronounced "gunnel") open up into the fishing cockpit. In other cases, the gunwale is enclosed and the rod holders empty into the bilge. In the latter case, you could be filling your bilge with fuel. There are two signs of this error. First, your fuel tank appears to take over twice the amount of its capacity. Second, your bilge pump switches on and pumps the fuel out into the water all around you.

To avoid refueling calamities, simply pay attention and follow all safety practices. It isn't too difficult to refuel safely. To do otherwise might lead to disaster, and I can't afford to lose any readers!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Little Missouri River Flash Flood Update

20th Flood Victim Has been Found, Prevention Now Focus........

While the body of the 20th person killed by the flash flooding of the Little Missouri River has been found, federal and state authorities are looking at ways to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.  Forecasters had sent out 4 flash flood warnings in an hour to advise people of the potential for flash floods.  The remoteness of the campsites likely contributed to the deaths, as there was no on site ranger, no cell phone service, no warning sirens and the nearest sheriff's department was more than an hour away........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 189-190
06/13/2010

Somebody might say it should be illegal to have as much fun as I've had the last few days. It all started with a trip back into Manhattan on my birthday last Wednesday and flowed right on through the weekend while I was with loads of friends at the Northeast Rough Water Kayak Symposium in Rhode Island. As you may know I've been so busy having fun that I haven't had time to post. Right now I'm on a ferry heading back to Long Island and finally have a chance to get caught up. I've posted here for day 189 and 190 and also finally got a chance to put up the post I had written up for my birthday on Day 186 so you can scroll down the blog list and check that one out too.

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Vessel Runs Aground, PWC Accidents........

James Merkel was operating his 35 foot Maxum Cruiser with 9 aboard, when his vessel ran aground.  Those aboard apparently became disoriented and thought they were in the main channel, when in reality, they were in a cove....

Matthew Leary and his daughter Grace were riding a PWC in the Lick Branch Cove on Saturday.  Leary attempted too sharp of a turn, and both riders were thrown off the PWC.  Leary sustained injuries to his left hip and leg, and was transported to Lake Regional Hospital....

Saturday evening, two St. Louis men were thrown off of a PWC after hitting a wake on the Little Niangua River.  The operator, Walter Carvalho reported lower back pain after the incident, and was taken to Lake Region Hospital for treatment........

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day 2007.........

We were idling very slow up-river on a Saturday afternoon last year in my boat around Two Branch Island, taking our time, enjoying the afternoon, looking at the scenery, the houses, the house trailers and other things along the river.

A place along the Missouri side of the Mississippi River caught our attention...lots of folks were gathered, cooking, drinking and having fun.  The looked like a closed in carport, all outfitted with island decorations, tables, chairs, umbrellas, signs, BBQ pits and more.....quite the setup !

About that time a gentleman at the party came down to the dock and ask us ask us to stop in for a while and meet everyone.... ....So we did !

Mike introduced himself and then welcomed us to "Mike and Gill's Tiki Hut".  They had it all there....food, music, a nice island atmosphere, drinks and lots of friends.

We got to meet everyone, had a drink, snapped a few pictures, exchanged some river stories, and even got to look at their book of pictures taken by the official photographer...Skull Terry.

Good river people with plenty of hospitality !

Who are they ?
Mike is the guy under the Tiki Bar sign in the 2nd Picture from the top.

Skull Terry is in the bottom picture....taking our picture as we were leaving..

If you come down to the river
I bet you gonna find some people who live !

Illinois River Near Seneca, Illinois

Seneca Days Coming Up, Illinois LST Assn. Will Be There........

Beginning on Wednesday, June 16th, and running through Saturday, June 19th is the Seneca Shipyard Days Festival.  The Illinois LST Association will have an informational booth featuring memorabilia, photos scrapbooks and videos of Landing Ship Tanks and the Prairie Shipyards. The part the Prairie Shipyard at Seneca played in WW II came about because of unique geological characteristics, in addition to the need for new shipyard facilities.  The first LST was launched from the Seneca facility in 1942 with the traditional bottle of champagne.  11,000 people worked at the shipyard at it's peak, and some 157 LSTs were built during the war, with the last launched in June of 1947........

Abby Sunderland Update

Bumps And Bruises Aside, Teen Sailor Safe And Sound........

After being rescued by a French fishing vessel, 16 year old Abby Sunderland is joking, and looking forward to getting some sleep.  Sunderland's sailing vessel, Wild Eyes, apparently caught a particularly nasty wave that severed her mast.  The teen also lost satellite communications, and set off her emergency beacons.  Sunderland did continue to blog, after being rescued, and stated that the word "crazy" best describes the events that unfolded before her........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

Sand Berm Construction May Begin Over The Weekend........

An official with Shaw Industries has announced that dredging for the first of six sand berms could begin this weekend.  Shaw Industries is the lead contractor on the project.  BP has committed $360 million to the project, and Louisiana has already received $60 million.  The hope is that sand berms will capture the oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill, before it reaches natural barrier islands.   On a side note, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will soon reveal their plans to reconstruct barrier islands as part of the Louisiana state and federal restoration project.  While the sand berms will be constructed quickly, the barrier island projects have taken several years to design, so that they remain in place for at least 10 years........

Abby Sunderland Update

Rescuers Contacted The Teen, Vessel Seaworthy........

Australian authorities have contacted Abby Sunderland, but it may be a day before a French vessel  is able to tow Sunderland and her boat, Wild Eyes, to shore.  Sunderland triggered the emergency signal while encountering rough seas on Thursday.  Wild Eyes has been "demasted", the rigging has gone overboard.   The vessel is out of normal shipping lanes, approximately 2,000 miles southwest of Perth, Australia.  Sunderland's parents reported via Abby's blog that the teen is fine, and that the rough seas that had caused the teen to trigger the emergency beacons have calmed down........

Missourians can help protect our state from devastating invaders
Thursday, June 10, 2010

The potential effects of invasive plants, animals and diseases on the state’s economy and outdoor resources are incalculable.

JEFFERSON CITY MO – Will you be camping this summer? Boating or fishing? Planting trees or other landscaping? If so, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages you to help save the Show-Me State’s forests, fish and wildlife resources, along with our economy, from an army of invasive species.

Missouri’s location in the middle of the continent makes it a crossroads for travelers of all kinds, including a growing number of exotic plants, animals and diseases. Among the better-known invaders are the zebra mussel, gypsy moth and bush honeysuckle. But, the list is much longer. ...click here to continue reading.

Fishermen Escape Eddy Near Ottumwa Dam........

Jeff Strandberg, Ben Devore and Brian Mogul were fishing for paddlefish in the Des Moines River, close to the Ottumwa Dam, when their boat's motor died.  The water current began to pull the vessel toward the dam.  Bystanders called 911 while Strandberg repeatedly pulled the starter handle on the motor.  Devore stated that at the last moment, the motor came to life, allowing the vessel to power out of the eddy, and make their way to shore.  When the vessel landed, police were on hand, waiting to check licenses........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

Congressmen Concerned Over Oil Spill's Threat To Shipping........

U.S. Representatives Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) and Phil Hare (D-Ill) have sent letters to President Obama and Admiral Thad Allen requesting impact studies on what effects the oil spill will have on the Mississippi River shipping lanes.  The congressmen have noted that the oil slick is coming closer to the Southwest Passage, a critical shipping lane for farmer's goods, and are worried what effects a shipping slowdown would have on prices.  The congressmen cite the abrupt drop in agricultural commodities prices following Hurricane Katrina in 2005........
