For Sale..  2005 Georgetown Forestriver RV

Description

2005 GEORGETOWN FORESTRIVER 33 FOOT MOTOR HOME IN GREAT CONDITION AND BARELY USED FOR SALE!!

absolutely love this RV but we recently rented a lot at the River and no longer have a need to travel. We are wanting to just buy a nice pull behind camper to leave down there and seems to be a waste to have the motor home now. The motor home has 10,500 miles on it and was taken care of very well. We performed regular maintenance on it and will be happy to let anyone interested in it take a look. WE WILL NOT RENT OUT FOR THE WEEKEND OR LEASE SO DON'T EVEN ASK. WE ARE SELLING THE MOTOR HOME FOR $55,000 NO TRADES. We put a very large down deposit on the RV and are asking right at our payoff amount so this is a very good price especially considering the excellent shape and low mileage. Additional info is as followed:

-FORD V10 ENGINE
-1 SLIDE OUT IN THE KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM AREA
-VERY CLEAN
-NEVER SMOKED IN
-HYDRAULIC LEVELING JACKS
-TONS OF STORAGE COMPARTMENTS UNDERNEATH AND INSIDE
-STAND UP SHOWER AND PRIVATE BATHROOM AREA
-SLEEPS 4-6 COMFORTABLY (CAN SLEEP MORE IF NEEDED)
-HAS DUAL AC THAT TEMP CAN BE CONTROLLED IN FRONT AND BACK
-BACK CAMERA WITH SOUND AND PICTURE DISPLAY
-GENERATOR WITH 51 HOURS ON IT

$55,000

If you would like to set up a time to look at the RV or have questions you can contact me at 314-226-6308 (SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE)

    Great Website.........

Bill,

Glad to see the river levels predictions have went down for this weekend. Hopefully we'll get out on Sunday.

We normally boat in the Winfield Pool by Elsberry, although we do come down to Alton Pool a few times a year. I like to park the boat at Grafton Marina and eat at the Restaurant.

Just a email to say I check your website daily.

   Wakeboarding Teen Injured, Making Recovery........

Landon BeLieu was wakeboarding on the Des Moines River over Memorial Day weekend when his wakeboard caught, flipping him into the water.  The 15 year old was struck by the board, rendering him unconscious.  BeLieu was wearing a life jacket, but it did not keep his head above water.  Friends and family were eventually able to get the teen to shore, where a retired Fire Captain began performing CPR.  The teen was rushed to the hospital, where he is recovering, and going through physical therapy........

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 183-185 (good rest and a slide show)
06/08/2020

There hasn’t been too much to report from the last three days and that in itself is a wonderful thing. Throughout this trip I’ve managed to fill my “rest” days with enough activity to make my time on the water look restful. That finally was NOT the case earlier this week.

On Sunday (day 183) I had made plans to ride into the city with Steve to meet up with a kayak club from Maryland to do a paddle to and around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Of course I had already been there but I was looking forward to sharing the experience with the group. However, by Saturday night (after the club picnic) the weather predictions for Sunday were looking iffy. That, combined with the fact that the three hour outing would involve four hours of driving, was enough to steer us away from the trip. As it turned out by Sunday morning the trip organizers had called off the outing due to the weather

Bar Owner Sued For Clean Water Violations........

Matt Grisham, owner of Farmington, Missouri's Rum Runners bar is being sued by Missouri's Attorney General, Chris Koster for allegedly violating the state's Clean Water law.  Grisham was granted a one year license for four sewage holding tanks while a waste treatment facility was being built.  The tanks were supposed to be emptied by a licensed septic waste hauler. An inspection in March by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources discovered that raw sewage was being pumped directly onto the ground, only 40 yards from the St. Francis River........

River History....

June 09, 2008  in River History

Flood of 2008......

Another round of flooding was on its way.
The Mississippi River at Hannibal, MO. rose from 5 feet to 19 feet in 3-1/2 days. The second time the town was threatened with floodwaters in 2008.

From The US Army Corps of Engineers website........

Water Safety Team brings home awards

Safety is paramount in everything done in the Corps of Engineers, whether that is repelling down a miter gate leaf at Locks 27 to inspect for stress fractures or metal fatigue or whether it’s providing safety to the public and minimizing risk through flood protection projects. Another opportunity and mandate the Corps has is to stress the importance of safety to the public is through the District’s water safety program.

Through our lakes projects and their partners in the community, the Corps has the unique opportunity to reach out to the general public and educate them on the importance of water safety and how they can enjoy water-related recreation activities at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities safely. This spring, the St. Louis District was recognized twice for their efforts to do just this, both regionally and locally in the St. Louis market.

At the International Boating and Water Safety Summit, held at Daytona Beach, Fla., on March 28-31, the St. Louis District was awarded the Regional Water Safety Award by the National Water Safety Congress.

Clam Boat Catches More Than The Crew Bargained For........

While fishing for clams about 45 miles south of Long Island, New York, a crew aboard a clam boat dredged up two military shells, that apparently contained mustard gas.  One crewman was severely sickened by the exposure to the chemical.  Blood and urine samples confirmed that the chemical was indeed mustard gas.  The vessel was fishing for clams in a charted munitions dumping area.  The area has no fishing restrictions. Following WW II, the government used the oceans as dumping grounds for both conventional and chemical munitions.  The practice had been abandoned by 1970........

Richard Trudell, a retired engineer, was looking for a boat to cruise in, but was unable to find one that didn't make and noise.  So he decided to build his own, equipped with solar panels on top of the vessel, to charge the batteries, which power two electric motors.  The vessel can be operated with a joystick, or by remote control.  Trudell is in talks with a Spokane boat manufacturer, Metalite, about bringing the solar powered boat to market........

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Press Release.....

          Illinois Department of Natural Resources
For Immediate Release

January 7, 2010

Safety Enforcement at Illinois Parks and Waterways Results in More than 2,000 Arrests and Warnings During Recent Memorial Day Weekend

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Conservation Police officers arrested 19 boaters for operating under the influence and another 13 motorists for driving under the influence as part of enforcement efforts during the recent Memorial Day holiday weekend on Illinois waterways and at state parks, recreation areas, fish and wildlife areas and other IDNR-managed sites.

In addition to the OUI and DUI arrests, Conservation Police officers (CPOs) issued 814 arrest citations for other offenses and issued 1,267 written warnings statewide while on patrol during the Memorial Day weekend, May 28-31.

“Having a great time while on the water or at a state park is a big part of the spring and summer for millions of residents and visitors to Illinois, and our job is to make sure those enjoying the outdoors are safe,” said IDNR Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Operating a vehicle or a boat while under the influence is dangerous and our Conservation Police officers will always remove impaired drivers and boaters to help make our parks and waterways safe.”

Offenses for which arrest citations were issued range from possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, underage drinking and disorderly conduct to illegal fishing and a variety of boat safety and boating law violations. CPOs investigated 13 boating accidents on Illinois waters during the holiday weekend.

“Boating safety begins with making sure your watercraft has the required safety equipment, including personal floatation devices for everyone on board, being aware of others on the water and staying sober while operating the boat,” Gutierrez added. “Our officers take boating safety – and safety in our parks – very seriously. We want boaters and park visitors to do the same.”

Boating Accident Near Eau Claire, Wisconsin

5 Year Old, Neighbors Avert Tragedy........

James Braaten was cruising in a 17 foot runabout with his young daughters, and 1 year old nephew, when the boy fell off of the boat.  He was wearing a lifejacket.  When Braaton tried to retrieve the boy, he fell into the water as well, and in the process, knocked the shifter into reverse.  Braaten was able to grab onto the boat, but was severely cut up by the prop as the boat turned lazy circles in reverse.  The 1 year old nephew in the water was nearly struck by the boat.  Bystanders were able to hop aboard another vessel, and approach the runaway boat, shouting instructions to the 5 year old on the pilot-less boat to turn off the key, which is what she did........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

When two vessels approach one another, which one has the "Right of Way?" Does one vessel have the "absolute" right-of-way over the other regardless of the circumstances? What do the Navigation Rules say about the so-called "gray" areas? These are a few common questions that deserve some discussion.

First, let's start with the definitions found in Nav Rules 16 and 17. Those Rules define the responsibilities and conduct expected of vessels approaching one another. The Nav Rules specify the designations "Stand-on" and "Give-way" to describe the status assumed by each vessel.

According to Rule 16, the Give-way vessel, "is directed to keep out of the way of another vessel shall, so far as possible, take early and substantial action to keep well clear." What that amounts to is thinking ahead and altering your course and/or speed to avoid a collision with another vessel. The "Give-way" vessel has the obligation to "keep out of the way" of the vessel in an encounter.

Rule 17 defines the "Stand-on" vessel, which is the vessel for which another vessel is obliged to "keep out of the way." The Rule requires that the Stand-on vessel "keep her course and speed." This obligation is as serious as the obligation of the Give-way vessel to keep out of the way of the other vessel.

Keeping your course and speed is important because it removes any doubt about what the Give-way vessel must do to "keep out of the way." If the Stand-on vessel was to alter course or speed, the circumstances would continue to change, resulting in an uncertain situation for the Give-way vessel to respond to. The obligation of the Stand-on vessel to keep her course and speed provides a predictable scenario for the Give-way vessel to deal with.

Have you noticed that I haven't used the term " Right-of Way " and instead, have used the term "keep out of the way?" That's because the term "Right-of-Way" appears in the Nav Rules only in relation to the "down-bound" vessel having the "right-of-way" over an up-bound vessel on the Great Lakes and the Western Rivers . Everywhere else, the Nav Rules use the phrase "keep out of the way" to indicate the obligation of the Give-way vessel.

The term "right-of-way" implies an "absolute right" of one vessel over another. In the river situation, with a current astern of your vessel, the resulting reduction in the steering ability puts your vessel at a distinct disadvantage. The up-bound vessel has more water passing by its rudder giving it a steering advantage over the other.

Given the "river current" situation, it is unlikely that the down-bound vessel would ever "out maneuver" the up-bound vessel. In most inland and offshore cases, where a "river current" is not present, the phrase "keep out of the way" applies to the Give-way vessel.

Lastly, let's talk about the issue of an "absolute right-of-way" of one vessel over another. Rule 17 requires the Stand-on vessel to "take such action as will best aid to avoid a collision" if the give-way vessel fails to "take appropriate action." The bottom line is that the stand-on vessel shall keep her course and speed as long as the give-way vessel takes early and substantial action to avoid a collision.

In short, there is no absolute right-of-way!

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Lake Of The Ozarks

Houseboat Sinking Story Has Two Sides........

There are other factors to be considered when trying to sort out the facts of the recent houseboat sinking being caused by cruiser wakes, such as the houseboat having an unstable design, the fact that the incident occurred in the dark, and even if all of the navigation rules had been followed, the outcome may have been the same........

Ancient Rivers

New Study Suggests Rivers Once Ran Westerly........

An idea that a huge Amazon-like river system once flowed west across North America now has some evidence in the form of zircon mineral grains.  The zircon grains found in the Colorado plains originated from the northern Appalachians, with a pit stop in Michigan.  The only easily accessible Jurassic rocks in the Midwest are in Michigan quarries. The age dispersion of the zircons is similar in the Michigan and Colorado sandstone samples........

     Free Fishing Days in Missouri

Enjoy Free Fishing Days in Missouri June 12-13
Monday, May 24, 2010

Share a pastime that can last a lifetime. Along with the fish, you may catch some priceless memories.

JEFFERSON CITY MO – Discover the lure of Missouri outdoors with Free Fishing Days on June 12 and 13. Each year the Missouri Department of Conservation designates the weekend after the first Monday in June for permit-optional fishing. The goal of Free Fishing Days is to encourage people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. During Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in the Show-me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp or trout park daily tag.

Missouri is blessed with more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. Fly fish for trout in a spring-fed Ozark stream or trotline for monster catfish on Missouri’s Big Rivers. Our waters hold ancient paddlefish and sturgeon, ferocious muskies, wary bass and tasty bluegill, crappie and walleye. More than 200 different fish species live here, and 40 of them are the targets of anglers.

Normal regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Regulations are outlined in the 2010 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations available at bait shops and other stores where fishing permits are sold, or online at www.MissouriConservation.org. Some private fishing areas still require permits on free fishing days, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property.

Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many state-owned fishing areas also have special facilities for anglers with disabilities. To learn more about fishing and find local spots, visit www.Missouri Conservation.org and search “fishing” or contact the nearest Conservation Department office.

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 182
06/05/2010

The big event in store for today was the Long Island Paddlers kayak club spring picnic. After two long days of touring the city I was happy to have such a simple and fun way to fill the day. After sleeping in a bit (lord knows I needed the rest) we stopped at the grocery store deli to pick up no less than 19 feet of sandwich along with salads and trimmings for the picnic. Without quite enough room in the car to haul everything we ended up putting the sandwiches in the cockpits of our kayaks in order to get it all to the picnic..... River History....

June 7, 2008 in River History

On Saturday, June 7th, 2008.... the McKinley Bridge opened up the bikeway.

In 2004, the Great Rivers Greenway District worked with the Metro East Park and Recreation District to make an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to open up a bikeway/pedestrian access on the McKinley Bridge. This project was finished and officially opened up Saturday. They had a beautiful day for the festivities. This was the first pedestrian/bike trail over the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area.

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

Estimates State Cataclysm Will Last Into The Fall........

As BP has announced that their containment cap is now capturing a guesstimated hundred thousand-plus gallons of oil per day, the U.S. Coast Guard has spoken cautiously of the success, stating that the cap does not represent a success in halting the spill, a feat that will only be achieved when the gusher is sealed off with concrete.  In the wake of the disaster, protesters are popping up urging a boycott of BP, however, Elvis made an appearance on behalf of the locally owned franchise, holding a sign that said "This BP Station Locally Owned.  Be Kind"........

Even 175 years after the birth of Samuel Clemmons, some of the River destinations visited by Clemmons, and written about by Mark Twain may in fact be recognizable to him.  The towns that influenced his life and writings include Grand Tower, which Twain described as in "need of a few repairs here and there, and a coat of whitewash everywhere" apparently has not changed much, nor has the Tower Rock, from which the town gained it's name........

Four tourists from Pennsylvania were rescued Thursday, after they decided to attempt to swim across the Mississippi River at Lacrosse, Wisconsin.  The men were able to get around 200 feet out when they ran into trouble.  Two of the men were able to pull themselves out of the water, but rescuers had to use an extension pole to retrieve the other two.  On May 24th, a trio attempted to swim across the Mississippi River, and were rescued by a private boater........

MISSOURI WATER PATROL CONDUCTS SWIFT WATER TRAINING

The Missouri State Water Patrol put officers to the test with four days of specialized swift water rescue training below Pomme De Terre Dam from April 26 to 29. The challenging training in simulated fast-moving flood conditions expanded upon exercises conducted for the first time last year below the dam near Hermitage, Missouri.

"This kind of exercise and training provides invaluable experience for our Water Patrol officers," said Missouri State Water Patrol Lt. Col. Michael Smith. "The conditions are very similar to the dangerous swift water officers face during real flooding here in Missouri. The training means officers will be able to work more safely in dangerous conditions, protecting the public and themselves.”

During the training, Water Patrol instructors covered boat operations in swift water, self rescue techniques, rope and pulley rescue systems and other flood rescue techniques. Many of the techniques focused on methods of rescuing victims without putting a boat in the water because conditions are often simply too dangerous to both maneuver a boat and perform a rescue. The rope and pulley techniques learned will allow the officer to better coordinate efforts with rescuers from other agencies that have received similar training.

"This training is a great opportunity to bring together officers from different agencies who often wind up working together during flood response efforts in Missouri," said Water Patrol Training Coordinator Lt. Eldon Wulf. "Swift water flooding is one of the most dangerous environments officers who work the water will find themselves in. The skills practiced in this training will increase safety for our emergency responders.”

Ten Water Patrol officers took part in the training. Agents from the Missouri Department of Conservation and rangers from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service also took part in the training.

Photographs of this training may be viewed at the following website:

Fox River Dumping Update

Two Men Indicted In Dumping Incident........

Prison time and fines of up to $25,000 each face two men indicted for the illegal dumping of alkylbenzene sulfonic acid anionic surfactant into a creek, which is a tributary of the Fox River.  Yu Tan Zheng and An Hong were arrested when authorities investigating large white bubbles and a fish kill discovered one of the men dumping a substance from a 55 gallon drum into a storm sewer.  The authorities attempted to stem the flow of the suds into the Fox River, but many fish and wildlife perished........

Reader Commentary

    Genrators.....

Hi Bill,

I am so glad no one lost their in the Ridenour family over the CO poisoning. One thing not mentioned is the use of generators while parked on the beach. The boat needs to be swinging at anchor, so the wind can take the generator exhaust away from the boat. Being on the beach, at a dock, or anchored in such a way to prevent the boat from swinging with the wind are all risky practices. Rafting up is risky, too, but risk is minimized if generator exhaust exits from the rear of the boat and the wind is allowed to take the gases away, but this is minimized when several boats cannot swing with the wind. Protect yourselves, if you don't like the boating or safety practices of your boating neighbors, SPEAK UP!, and move if you have to.
One thing that I have a hard time with is the subject of diesel generator exhaust. We have a diesel generator and I understand the advantage of diesel from an explosive aspect, but people say that diesel exhaust does not present the same CO dangers that gas does. That doesn't make sense to me, CO is CO, no matter the source.

Does anyone have an educated opinion on this?

Carbon Monoxide | Indoor Air Quality | US EPA

CO2 is carbon dioxide, it is what we breath out. It is an asphyxiant. It is 1.5 times heavier than air.

CO is carbon monoxide, is a byproduct of any fossil fuel not fully burned, that which is found in exhaust from any engine or generator.

CO- carbon monoxide is slightly LIGHTER than air! That is why you find them on your ceiling at home. On a boat, detectors should be placed where CO has the ability to enter the living space of your boat. I also recommend placing one as close to your head were you sleep. Hatches, doors and drains are all points of entry. Check your drains! Not all are trapped, if it is not trapped you should plug it when not in use. Never run a generator or be around any internal combustion engine without a CO detector. Always confirm its operation! NOTE: A CO2 detector will not help you.

CO is what we are talking about!

PLEASE, go to the EPA’s website and learn how to protect yourself, don’t forget about your pets as well.

    Press Release:

  Know Your Boat’s Capacity

A boat operator should never take a boat on the water with too many people or too much gear on board. Boats loaded beyond their capacity will swamp or capsize more easily, and will be more difficult to control. Although federal law requires capacity plates on boats fewer than 20 feet in length, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) requires a capacity plate on all boats fewer than 26 feet in order to be certified by NMMA.

Look for a capacity plate near the operator’s position or on the transom of the boat. This plate indicates the maximum weight capacity and/or the maximum number of people that the boat can carry safely in good weather.

A few things to remember:

  • Do not exceed either the stated maximum weight capacity or number of people

  • Maximum weight is the combined weight of passengers, gear & motor.

  • In many states it is a violation to exceed weight capacity

  • Always follow the recommended capacity in the owner’s manual

  •  Never exceed capacity recommendations.

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 180
06/03/2010

Today was day one of an overnighter in the Big Apple. After breakfast Steve and Kirsten dropped me off at the train (which I narrowly missed) and sent me on my way into the city. The train was about 45 minutes away from Penn Station when I got a call from a friend, Gary Goldfinger, who goes to school at Plattsburg University upstate. He is in town for a few days at his parents house just north of the city before he heads out to Asia for seven months to work as an outdoor activities guide/instructor/coordinator for a school out there. Gary was still in bed when he called but still managed to get ready, drive into town, find parking, and find me before I finished my first street vendor hot dog.

Asian Carp Update

    Corps Rejects Chicago Lock Closures........

On Thursday, federal officials decided not to close the shipping locks in Chicago on a regular basis, citing that it may not stop the carp from reaching Lake Michigan, but may very well hurt local businesses. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has stated that anything shy of the permanent closure of the Chicagoland shipping locks would be ineffective in the war on Asian carp, and that option would be included in the Corps long range study of whether to separate the Mississippi River Basin from the Great Lakes........

I hate to hear there was yet another carbon monoxide related incident in our area of the river, or anywhere. For those of you who did not check out the links I provided previously regarding the risks of carbon monoxide on boats, do it. I thought I would send a follow-up message based on the comments and assumptions I’ve heard regarding the carbon monoxide incident that occurred this past Memorial weekend. The intent of this message is not to be critical of anyone involved.

I am very glad the situation turned out as it did with everyone still alive and recovering. I know Eric and his family from the river and our kids playing together on the sandbars, so this hits close to home for me again. From what I know, Eric and his wife are very knowledgeable boaters who would never do anything to put their children in harms way. Everyone, if you see Eric and his family back on the river be supportive of them, not critical. It’s a situation that I would hate to be in myself as a husband and father.

This incident, like the ones that occurred recently in Two Branch and near Elsberry, should be a wakeup call to everyone. This boating family was very experienced at staying onboard overnight, much more so than many of the boaters I encounter on the river these days. No boater should assume that it will not happen to them. Regardless of your level of boating experience, if you think you and/or your family members will never be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning on a boat, think again. Do some research, most of the carbon monoxide incidents that have occurred in this area over the past few years involved experienced boaters. If it happened to Eric, it could happen to me. We’ve both been boating for 25+ years and definitely know our way around boats. Don’t let experience lure you into a false sense of security.

I do not know what caused carbon monoxide to accumulate in the boat and I am not assuming anything, nor should anyone else. Eric was right in his message posted on your website, you can have a serious carbon monoxide problem on a boat in a matter of minutes. If a running gasoline propulsion engine or generator develops an exhaust system leak or restriction, it can cause an immediate problem for occupants in an enclosed cabin or cockpit under certain conditions. I know it because of testing I have performed many times while investigating the causes of fatal carbon monoxide incidents on boats. It doesn’t take running a generator all night while you sleep to kill you, although that can increase your odds of being exposed to lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide. It generally just takes a combination of factors to come together at the wrong time to have a serious problem. That is why it is so important to know the risks of carbon monoxide on a boat and to have functional detection systems for it.

All Boaters: You must be sure that your boat has a working carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Have them checked and/or get new ones every year, they are cheap insurance. We have a portable battery powered CO detector that we take with us sometimes when we are guests on other boats so that I know there is a working CO detector onboard. It is that easy. How often do you board your boat without a working cooler? That’s an easy one for me, probably never. Think of your CO detectors like that and make sure they will always serve you as well as your favorite cooler. Also, please do your part to prevent future incidents by further educating yourselves and your families about the risks of carbon monoxide on boats.

Everyone, please keep Eric and his family in your thoughts and be thankful they are still with us. I know how much they love the river and hope to see them back soon.

Thanks,
Randy Bicknese

Reader Commentary

    Carbon Monoxide.....

Bill,

I am happy to hear all turned out well with the CO poisoning on the river this weekend. I would like to thank Eric for bringing this danger to light in his letter, as he has several great points. It truly is unsafe to run a generator while sleeping. I would like to clear up a little misinformation in his letter. The gas that made his family sick was Carbon Monoxide or CO not Carbon Dioxide or CO2. Carbon Monoxide weighs almost the same as air. Air has a specific gravity of 1.000 and CO has a specific gravity of 0.9667. He is correct on CO2 , it has a weight heavier than air at 1.5189. All that being said, a CO Detector can be place at any level for protection. If you have a boat with a cabin an extra Carbon Monoxide detector may be a great idea.

In our homes we should place the CO detector near our sleeping rooms so in the event the detector would go into alarm it would wake us up from sleeping.

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 179
06/02/2010

Today was the first day of eight days that I’ll be taking off the water in order to see the local sights, get some rest, and of course EAT as much as I can. During this break I’ll be staying with Steve and Kirsten who live in a beautiful home out on Long Island about a two hour drive from the city. I met Steve via the trip web site about two months ago and ever since we’ve been making plans for me to do a presentation for his club, The Long Island Paddlers, while I’m in town. When Steve offered up a speaker’s fee for doing the talk I politely asked if I could trade that for a place to stay while I was in town. Steve accepted, and a plan was hatched.

Hey Bill,

Here's a few shots from the weekend if you care to use them. We tied up with the usual crowd at the upper end of Two Branch slough on Sunday, six boats rafted together. You might think they're flying their flags for the Memorial Day holiday, but these guys always have them proudly flying!

Monday, around noon, we were enjoying lunch on the Sun deck at Cedar Hill just before the storm hit. That's the Mississippi Belle II Casino. It came through the Winfield lock, with the storm right behind. The next is looking upriver from the deck where you would normally see the lock and damn, but the rain was so heavy nothing was visible. Lightning and thunder was all around, but Dave said "it never rains at Cedar Hill", and he was right! (at least this time). We had a few drips, but we never had to abandon our post under the Tiki Bar. That's Katy, me, and little brother KC, picture by Mary.

IDNR Announces Summer Urban Fishing Clinics

Clinics provide free instruction and fun for kids, “Access to Fishing” gear also available

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Learning how to fish is fun, easy and free for youngsters and families throughout Illinois this summer thanks to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Urban Fishing Program. Free fishing clinics are planned at more than 30 locations throughout the state.

“Fishing is a great way for families to spend time together outdoors, and each summer our urban fishing clinics give thousands of children a chance to experience the fun of fishing,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller. “The clinic instructors provide basic instruction on how to fish, and with those lessons we expect a lot of kids will become hooked on fishing.”

The free Urban Fishing Program clinics are targeted toward children ages 16 and younger, but anyone interested in learning basic fishing techniques are welcome to attend.

“Parents and grandparents are urged to come along and attend any of our programs with their children,” said IDNR Central Illinois Urban Fishing Program Coordinator Herb Dreier. “Their experiences will create excitement that will provide many memorable family discussions.”

Fishing clinic instructors present information on fish and other aquatic life, rules and regulations for fishing, as well as basic instruction on baiting a hook, tying a knot, casting, important tactics on how to catch fish and how to handle and return fish to the water. As part of each clinic, participants are provided with rods, reels, bait and tackle for 90 minutes of catch-and-release fishing.

Urban Fishing clinics are presented on weekdays during the late spring and summer months at 38 locations throughout the state. In addition to the scheduled clinics outlined below, fishing clinics can also be arranged for scouts, seniors, civic clubs and groups with special needs.

Science and physical education teachers interested in starting a fishing program in their schools can also contact the IDNR Urban Fishing coordinator in their area to get more information.

“Fishing is truly an activity that can develop into a lifelong hobby. Once a person knows the basics of fishing including how to catch fish, it can be an exciting and addictive activity,” Dreier said.

The Illinois Urban Fishing Program was introduced in Chicago in 1985 to teach individuals of all ages to fish, to provide better local fishing opportunities and to give participants an understanding of and a greater appreciation for natural resources. Urban Fishing Program coordinators also hold non-fishing conservation education programs and visit schools during the fall, winter and spring.

In addition to the fishing clinics, the IDNR provides fishing opportunities to anglers of all ages through the popular Access to Fishing initiative in which fishing gear can be borrowed at more than 155 locations statewide. The loan program provides the opportunity to borrow rods, reels and tackle packs. Participating loaner locations include many public libraries, park and forest preserve districts, bait shops, recreation departments and other locations. A list of sites offering access to fishing gear is available by checking the web site at www.ifishill inois.org or by phoning the IDNR Urban Fishing Program at 217/782-6424.

NAWS Update

Treatment Plants May Be Years Off........

Water treatment plant construction for the Northwest Area Water Supply project may be two years in the making.  This would mean that the NAWS project would not start bringing treated Missouri River water to northwest North Dakota communities for at least 5 years.  The project was approved by congress over 20 years ago, but construction finally began in 2002.  Officials in Manitoba, Canada oppose the project over concerns of "harmful material" ending up in their waters, and Missouri also opposes the project, citing water level concerns........

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Cruiser Wakes Swamp Houseboat........

Following the fireworks Sunday night at Tar-Tan-A, Andrew Metcalf's 1977 Yukon Delta Houseboat was swamped by the wakes of two cruisers passing on either side of the houseboat.  The vessel listed and sank, while dumping passengers into the water.  The operator of one of the cruisers saw the impact of the wake, and returned to help retrieve victims from the water.  The houseboat was recovered and re-floated.  No injuries were reported........

Barefooting

    In Memory of Brad Pegg

Brad Pegg had the biggest feet in the South Central Region, but it was his big heart that made him a favorite in the world of barefooting. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack, May 30, 2010 at his home in Wichita, KS.

He leaves behind three wonderful children, Lindsey, Joel and Abby all barefooters like their Dad. Born in 1961, Brad was in the Men’s 4 age division; but he skied in the Open Division in wakes which reflected his true love for barefoot slalom. His personal best wake score was 16.2. In 2006, at the Senior World Championships in Adna Washington, he posted the outstanding score of 15.8 which earned him a silver medal on the world stage! However, the true highlight of the event for Brad wasn't the silver medal; it was being able to share his love of barefooting with his daughter Lindsey who skied in the Junior Worlds Championships which were being held in Adna at the same time. There are so many great stories about Brad. We would like for you to go to the Barefoot Forum and share any fond memories and stories about Brad. Our plan is to gather the wishes and the stories to share with his kids as part of his legacy. Arrangements are pending and will post updates as the information becomes available

Iowa Island Carbon Monoxide Incident Update

The Ridenhours Talk About Near-Fatal Experience........

The Ridenhour's brush with death due to carbon monoxide poisoning took surprisingly little time to occur, from the starting of a generator aboard their boat, to the discovery of the victims, less than an hour had passed.  The family's 44 foot Baja was equipped with a CO detector, but investigators state that the unit was not functioning properly.  The Ridenhours say that they will be installing two CO detectors aboard their boat, and are encouraging others to do the same.  The investigation as to how CO made it into the cabin is ongoing........

Must Post CO 2 Story

Bill,

My name is Eric Ridenhour, I operated the Baja this past weekend that resulted in my family being in jeopardy’s way this past Sunday morning. I wanted to write you this because as usual, stories are told completely wrong, and you now have the story correct straight from the horses’ mouth. I never thought that it was anybody elses’ business exactly what occurred but this is exactly why it has become very important that everyone must know the truth. Folks, nobody is as safe as myself when it comes to CO 2 safety. I have been on this river for over 25 + years, I know more than anyone that you should never run a generator while you sleep and this is why everyone must always be careful . FOLKS the time of day you run a generator or how long you run it doesn’t matter, (CO 2 doesn’t care). I woke up on the island Sun. morning and didn’t start the generator until my wife asked me too around 0830 am so she could make the kids breakfast sandwiches in the microwave. I proceeded out of the boat to clean up around the bonfire from the previous evening, after doing so I spoke with 2 boat neighbors on the way back to my boat, one even asked if I wanted coffee at which time I stated I wanted to check on my wife and kids really expecting to have seen them since it had been aprox. 45 min.( that’s right folks 45 min)since I originally started the generator. When I hopped back on the boat, I found my wife unconscious. That is why I finally needed to say something, this was not something where we fell asleep with the gen. running, this was a near tragic event that could have happened to anyone. All boaters and campers need to realize when you run a genny. #1 get a second detector, mine was hard wired from the boat and was rattled loose with no test light or test button to even make sure it was working . And if you can put the detector near the floor I guarantee everyone who does have them has them installed mid way up on the wall. Why?? CO 2 is heavy and sinks to the floor first, if you wait for it to build, it’s too late. If you think you’re safe because you don’t use it while you are sleeping, stop fooling yourself. Please learn this, from my almost unfortunate incident, quit hiding behind a false sense of security because you think you’re safe just because you only use them during the day and you turn them off when you go to bed.

Thank you Bill, for this opportunity to get the truth out and hopefully put something in boaters’ minds to think of. If it can help someone to think twice and keep the possibility of the same thing from happening to them, it will be worth it. I just get tired of people thinking that we actually went to bed with it on and we were being reckless of the situation, remember….more than 1 co2 detector…..

Thank you,

Eric Ridenhour

Mississippi River At Lock and Dam 21

Two Men Tubing Survive Getting Sucked Into Dam

According to a News Report in the Quincy Herald-Whig ....  Two men were rescued on Memorial Day after being sucked through Lock and Dam 21.

Adams County Sheriff reported that the two men were tubing behind a boat above the dam in the early evening when they fell off the tube and got sucked toward the gates of Lock and Dam 21. One man went completely through the dam and the other was pinned by one of the gates.

Both were alert and conscious after being rescued and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

An off-duty Quincy policeman was fishing with several others on a pontoon below the dam when the incident happened and helped rescue one of the men. The other man rescued from the dam by local boaters.

Reader Commentary Response

    Wakeboarding and Skiing

Bill

In response to your: Reader Commentary

Wakeboarding and Skiing

1, You are responsible for your wake no matter what or where you are on the water. Your wake causes any damage, it’s your fault. You are responsible for the damage and any bodily injuries.

2, The Navigable water way is marked with channel markers. You are not to anchor in the channel.

More boaters are moving around and anchoring in different places due to the ever changing river. Plus the population of boat enthusiast is growing.

We all just need to remind ourselves that we are all here to enjoy the time on the water and be courteous to one another. If you pull into a chute to anchor and see that there are skiers, pull to one end or the other to try and stay out of their way. Skiers you may have to shorten the circle that you make.

The biggest problem I run into are boats running right through a chute and wake the anchored boats. Not only could the wake damage the anchored boats, but could also injure another person.

Just remember you are responsible for your wake.

Thanks

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 178 (New York, New York)
06/01/2010

At 8:05 AM this morning I paddled under the Verrazano bridge thus completing the Atlantic leg of this trip and beginning the New York canals and rivers portion. It was a day I've been looking forward to for quite a while and one I will never forget. When I stopped by the Statue of Liberty to take pictures I couldn't get over the feeling like it was a dream. I had to say it out loud, "That is really the Statue of Liberty, and I really paddled all the way here."

    E. Coli Levels High In Southwest Missouri Waterways........

On the heels of last year's Lake of the Ozarks E. Coli fiasco, the health departments of Jasper and Newton counties have begun testing for the bacteria.  Some portions of Missouri's waterways are clean, many surrounding the Lake of the Ozarks are not.  Officials in Jasper County began testing and found that 6 of 21 sites had elevated E. Coli levels.  Tests in Newton County has found 2 out of 14 sites tested for E. Coli had elevated bacteria levels.  Officials state that the E. Coli results are not necessarily indicative of a problem, as E. Coli levels will naturally fluctuate, especially following a big rain........

Mississippi River At Muscatine, Iowa

Barge Strikes Boat After Family Leaps To Safety........

Saturday night, a family of four was able to flee their boat after it stalled in the main channel of the Mississippi River, directly in the path of an oncoming barge.  Captain Andrew Oien was unable to restart his vessel following the stall, so Oien, his wife as well as their 3 and 1 year old daughters leapt from the boat into the River prior to the vessel being struck by the barge.  Luckily, all were wearing their life jackets, and a nearby boater picked them up........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

The first step in smooth docking is to assess the situation beforehand. When you are offshore of your destination, you might look at your wind indicator for wind direction. You might also look for the "telltale" signs of current around a buoy or a dayboard piling. However, it often ends up being different at the dock.

Bear in mind that wind speed and direction are altered by trees, buildings and other structures. Wind can be deflected and slowed down, creating a different situation at the dock than you observed 500 yards away. It is wise to look for wind indicators as near to the dock and as low to the ground as possible. That will give you a preview about what's going on at the dock.

Remember that the impact of the wind is related to the "sail area" or "windage" of your hull and superstructure. What the wind is doing at the top of a 56' mast may be very different that what is happening 6 feet off the water.

In order to assess the current, start looking at pilings and other structures in the water "as you enter the harbor or marina." A breakwater, large vessels at the dock, or a point of land can change the speed and direction of the current. In short, the wind and current conditions 500 yards offshore are irrelevant. Make your observations as near to your slip as possible.

As you approach the dock, you should have already determined whether the wind and/or current will assist or oppose your maneuvering efforts. The name of the game is anticipation. In short, the elements of weather will either speed you up or slow you down. To capitalize on those conditions is the key to safe docking.

Start first by keeping your bow into the wind and/or current as much as possible. Unlike your stern, your bow is designed to "cut through" the water. Also, the more water that passes by your rudder, the more effective your steering will be.

If you are approaching a bulkhead or face dock, you always have the option to moor to port or starboard. Simply choose the one that keeps your bow into the elements. In the case of a slip, choose between going "bow in" and "stern in" based on conditions.

In the case where the wind and/or current is pushing you away from your destination, there is little time to get a dock line on before you drift back out. A good technique is to focus on just one line that will hold you in position until you can rig the other dock lines.

Along a face dock you may rig a "holding" line from your beam cleat. In a slip it may be a bow line. One line to hold you in place is often a safer and more effective operation than the frantic rigging of several lines simultaneously. Remember, when your line handlers get "nervous and jerky" someone is likely to get hurt.

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

Paddling News

Paddle Choice Almost As Important As Boat Choice........

Apparently, the choices between different models of paddles will mean the difference between fatigue after 30 minutes or being able to paddle all day before needing to reach for the painkillers.  Such choices are in the length of the paddle, the weight of the paddle, and even the material that the paddle is constructed from ........

   Wakeboarding and Skiing !

Bill,

Long-time boater and regular reader of your site. My folks have had a place on the river since '73 and we were sand bar bums well before then.

For as long as I can remember, we've had something of an unofficial peace with the boats who like to anchor that we wouldn't ski in chutes by Portage Island and no one would anchor between Slim Island and the Missouri shore. It's a great place to ski and wakeboard, and quite frankly isn't a great place to anchor as it's sort of buggy, little breeze and not great water flow. Down by Portage Island, however, is terrific.

Increasingly over the last few years, however, more boats are anchoring by Slim Island and I'm concerned there are increasing hard feelings when the skiers and wakeboarders cruise past. As a technical matter, since this is navigable, it's unlawful to anchor in a way which inhibits traffic. In addition to the skiers, a lot folks from down river cut through this chute when traveling upstream as it is both shorter and smoother than than channel. Jet skis seem to be heavy users.

I thought perhaps your forum would be a good forum to discuss. Interested in your thoughts.

Good boating,
Jim Erlinger.
