Hi Bill

Alton Marina crew hooked up on Weber Lake for Memorial Day fun

Ended up with 15 boats anchored out and having a great time!

Weber Lake is behind an island that sits just about half mile up river from Longshots, great place to anchor out.  Don't know if its an official name, that's what John Rucker (Who's Your Daddy) calls it.

Bystanders To The Rescue Of Boaters Overcome By Carbon Monoxide........

While over-nighting on Iowa Island, a boater awoke to discover his wife and two children unresponsive.  The family had fallen victim to carbon monoxide.  Luckily, a nearby boater was able to respond with his own oxygen canisters to assist with reviving the family.   Missouri State Water Patrol Officer Lou Amighetti stated that the fast response of bystanders most likely saved the family's lives.  Officer Amighetti further asserted that this incident should serve as a reminder that boaters should not only have life jackets on their boats, but smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well........

Locking Through

Bill,
Now that the boating season is in full swing. Just a thought that boats using the locks should remember the PFD's mandatory when making the lock.

Also, they must catch lines when in the chamber.

This for your safety when in the locks.

Have a safe season on the water.

BP Scrambles To Implement Newest  Plan to Plug Leak........

In light of BP's latest failure to stem the flow of oil from the blown out Deepwater Horizon wellhead, they are scurrying to execute the latest attempt to control the leak.  The plan has shifted to containment, as BP will try putting a cap over the leak to capture most of the leak.  Officials are concerned that the leak may in fact increase temporarily when the cap is placed.  At this point, sealing the leak will only occur after two relief wells are completed in August........

Project Improves Upper Mississippi River Habitat........

Thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, fish and turtles will be able to swim and bask under much nicer conditions this summer.  The Corps intends to remove small trees and shrubs along the Upper Mississippi River near Buffalo City, Wisconsin, in order to improve access to their nesting sites.  The Corps will also dredge backwaters, in order to improve the quality of "winter homes" for fish.  The project will begin in June, and continue through the fall........

Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club......

The Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club is having a carwash/fundraiser this Saturday 5-29-2010 at Clifton Terrace Park. We will have food available.

The dock will be in, the clubhouse will be open and we will have boats on the water so I guess we could call it an open house and put it on the community calendar. The club has a lot of new members and we plan to put the jump back in the river this year and do some ski shows. We want to increase our membership for both recreation and show skiing on the river and at area lakes.

The club has a lot to offer including two boats, a clubhouse, private beach and boat ramp. The cost for a single membership is only 75.00.

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 174
05/28/2010

 Daily stats
Start: 6:00 AM - Ocean City, NJ
Finish: 1:00 PM - near Beach Haven, NJ
Time: 7:00 hours
Daily dist: 23 miles
Total dist: 3500+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: Pleasant, partly cloudy - 70 deg. - east wind 5-10+
Notes: A shorter than normal day that almost became a longer than normal day.
Today was the first of five, shorter than average, days that are to come between Ocean City, NJ and New York. By the number and location of available places to camp or stay and the nature of the route I‘ve chosen, my normal eight hour thirty miles per day routine won’t work in this area. After grinding out several longer than normal days over the last week I can’t say I mind taking it easy a bit. When I got on the water this morning and bid the Bay Cats’ dock farewell I was happy to only have 22 miles and about six hours of paddling to do before I could sit back and relax a bit......       This picture is of a   WW II Submarine  that is on display at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI.    The city of  Manitowoc and the museum are both located on the shores of Lake Michigan.  The connection they have to the Mississippi River is that submarines were built in  Manitowoc during  WW II, loaded on floating dry docks and transported down the Illinois River and then the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks for the picture and interesting story Dave.

National Mississippi River Museum And Aquarium Update

Large-Format Cinema Screen To Screen 3-D Films Under Construction....

The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium is currently undergoing an expansion, and the latest project to be tackled is the 40 foot wide, 22 foot tall 3-D cinema.  Actually, the large format cinema will play films in 4-D, which means that effects such as vibrating seats, spritzing water and smells will be included.  Next week, projectors and wiring will be installed, and in mid-June, crews anticipate installing carpet and seating.  The construction is expected to be complete for the cinema opening on June 26.  The first films to be screened there are "Turtle Vision" and Sharks 3-D........

Alton Water Ski and Wakeboard Club

Large-Format Cinema Screen To Screen 3-D Films Under Construction....

Thanks a lot.

     E. Coli.... Public Beach No. 1 Closed, No. 2 Open........

Although E. Coli levels at Public Beach No. 1 were below the maximum allowed, the beach will remain closed because the geometric mean, (a weighted average) of the past two weeks samples is above standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  Thankfully, Public Beach No. 2 has tested clean and will be open for the Memorial Day weekend.  The Truman State Park Day Use Beach and the Mark Twain State Park Public Beach will be closed over Memorial Day Weekend due to the high levels of E. Coli........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 173
05/27/2010

Daily stats
Start: 6:30 AM - Avalon, NJ
Finish: 11:30 AM - Ocean City, NJ
Time: 5:00
Daily dist: 16 miles
Total dist: 3500+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: Big head winds out of the NE, cloudy and chilly in the AM but nice later Notes: Got a lucky break and a great place to camp
My early starts lately (typ. 5:30 AM launch times) are designed to help me try to get as many miles in as I can before the wind builds. This morning at 4:00 AM I woke to the sound of my tent snapping in the wind. I’d already lost the race with the wind so I rolled back over and got another hour of sleep. My plan for the day was to put in about 32 miles to try to reach some spoil islands behind Atlantic City. The wind and tides had other plans for me..... Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

    Proposed Sand Berm Earns Approval........

A proposal to construct a six foot tall sand berm south of Scofield Island, and west of the mouth of the Mississippi River has been approved by Admiral Thad Allen.  This berm is one of six oil barriers proposed by Louisiana, but the only one approved.  Allen stated that the berm will be used as a feasibility study, in that if it is successful, Allen would consider approving construction of other barriers.  Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal commended the decision to construct the berm, but stated that it doesn't go far enough........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 172
05/26/2010

It was a great day that ran much longer than I expected. I'm already dozing off so I'm going to make this post quick then get to bed for some much needed rest. I'll fill in the gaps tomorrow.

The ferry that would eventually take Rick and Hank back across the bay. Mid crossing in stil mirror smooth water
I got a very early start and paddled down the beach a couple miles to catch up with Rick and Hank who drove down from the Baltimore area to do the crossing of the Delaware Bay with me. The weather was good as you could imagine and we made it nearly all the way across the bay on almost mirror smooth water. We arrived on the New Jersey side by about 10:00 then paddled another five miles up the East shore and came in the Cape May inlet. From there Rick and Hank paddled south down a canal to catch a ferry back across the bay. Meanwhile I turned and paddled north in search of high ground on which to camp and to put a few more miles in. The least I can say is that the search for high camp-able land was a bit of a challenge but came out good in the end. .... Click on Daily Blog  http://www.portagetoportage.com/blog.html

Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 25, 2010

 Chris McCloud 217-299-7128
   Ashley Spratt 612-247-2976

Fish Sampling Operation Complete on Little Calumet River
Safety zone rescinded; waterway reopened to commercial and recreational traffic

Chicago, IL- The Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (RCC) wrapped
up a successful sampling and data collection operation on the Little Calumet
River in South Chicago on Tuesday.

Fisheries biologists from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources
(IDNR), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and other supporting
agencies collected just over 100,000 pounds of fish during the week-long
operation. Over 40 species of fish were collected, though no Bighead or
Silver Asian carp were found.

“We will now look at the entire body of evidence collected thus far,
including eDNA sampling results and all of our conventional sampling with
nets and electrofishing gear to see if we can draw any further conclusions
about the risk of invasion and establishment of Asian carp in Lake Michigan
through the Chicago Area Waterway System,” said RCC co-chair John
Rogner.

"This operation could not have succeeded without the support, patience and
cooperation of the waterway operators, marina owners, recreational
boaters and other boating and transportation representatives that use this
waterway," said Charlie Wooley, Deputy Regional Director of the U.S Fish
and Wildlife Service Midwest Region. "I would like to thank all of these
industry members for working with us in our mission to protect the Great
Lakes."

The safety zone restrictions established on the Calumet River and Little
Calumet River between mile marker 321.5 and 326.5 have been lifted by the
U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port. All vessels in immediate queue above
and below the O'Brien Lock are requested to contact the Coast Guard COTP
representative on VHF Channel 16 or the Lockmaster at 773-646-2183 to
coordinate vessel transit. Once the vessel queue is cleared, the queue will
then be opened for routine vessel transit.
Environmental consulting company SET Inc., will remain in the area for the
next few days to remove any fish that surface.

While the public can now access the river for fishing and other recreational
purposes, dead fish should NOT be consumed in any circumstance.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) removed a number of
sport fish before this week’s Rotenone treatment and relocated them
outside the treatment zone. IDNR fisheries will restock the area with a
variety of sport fish species in the future.
Over 250 people from more than 20 local, state and federal agencies
contributed to the sampling and data collection efforts.

The RCC would like to thank the Forrest Preserve District of Cook County,
Sunset Bay Marina and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for allowing access
to their respective properties during the operation.

Photographs and b-roll footage from the operation are available to the
media and public at the U.S. Coast Guard’s Visual Information Gallery at
http://cgvi.uscg.mil/media/main.php.

Further information on the Asian Carp RCC and Asian carp control efforts

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Update

"Top Kill" Plug.... So Far, So Good....

BP began pumping heavy mud into the leaking well on Wednesday, in an effort to halt the flow of oil from the blown out well head.  [BP] chief executive Tony Hayward stated that at this time, it would take at least 24 hours to know if the "top kill" effort is successful.  This method of shutting down a blown out well head has been successful on the surface, however, it has never been attempted 5,000 feet below the sea.  BP officials are giving the "top kill" effort a 60-70% chance of actually working........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Impact

Cleaning Station Station Used For First Time For Tanker........

Tuesday, a tanker bound for the Lower Mississippi River utilized a "decontamination" station after encountering the oil spill while underway.  The cleaning station is really 2 workboats equipped with fire hoses.  Although cleaning stations have been set up for a few weeks now, the first one used was about 4 miles from the Southwest Pass entrance to the Mississippi River.  New Orleans port officials state that shipping traffic on the Mississippi River remains normal........

    Boaters Encouraged To Be Careful........

With higher water levels, stronger currents and submerged objects, boaters are urged to use caution when hitting waterways this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.  Rivers are expected to fall below flood stage by the weekend, but likely be above normal.  Cpl.      Hungry?  Don't Eat Raw Crayfish........

When you are spending some time on the River, and find yourself in need of a snack, make sure you do not eat raw crayfish.  Apparently, the crayfish can carry a rare parasitic worm, that when ingested, can migrate into the lungs and even the brain.  So far, Missouri has had 6 cases of people infected with the worm, bringing the North American total to 13.  One of the six victims was a teen from Florissant, Missouri.  For several months, doctors were unable to figure out what was wrong with him........

Missouri River Barge Traffic May Not Improve After Drought........

Historic trends indicate that with the end of the drought that plagued the Missouri River Valley for the better part of a decade, that barge shipping will not rebound as many expect.  With each consecutive drought, the barge traffic has increasingly dropped off, never to recover to previous levels.  Earlier this year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the Missouri River would have a full shipping season, running from April through November.  Although history suggests otherwise, the barge shipping industry believes that the higher water levels, and longer season may breathe new life into barge shipping along the Missouri........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 171 (Happy First Birthday Jonas!)
05/25/2010

Daily stats
Start: 5:30 AM- Ocean City, MD
Finish: 3:00 PM - Lewes, DE
Time: 9:30 Hours
Daily dist: 32 miles
Total dist: 3000+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: NE wind 10 mph high in mid 70’s mostly clear (nice)
Notes: Made much better time on the inside today than I did on the outside yesterday. Nice to be able to hide from the wind.
Today I got smart and ran up the sheltered inside bays and canals rather than spend another long day beating against the wind and waves. Consequently my mileage went way up over yesterday and I had a great time putting in the miles. One very important link in my route today was the Assawoman canal just north of Ocean City. On my charts it shows that it was only a foot and a half deep in 1977 (old charts I guess). Being that shallow I wasn’t sure the canal would be passable. Thankfully I was able to call my brother Luke the other day and he checked into it for me and learned that it is presently being dredged. He also read some blog posts from people that said they’d run the four mile canal on jet skis and in shallow draft pontoon boats. With that info I was feeling good about giving it a try. When I got to the jet ski rental place yesterday I asked them about the canal and they said it was indeed passable for something like a kayak.

     Bagnell Dam Floodgates Opened........

Dam operators at Bagnell Dam have opened up the floodgates in order to accommodate the increased water flow being released upstream by the Truman Dam.  As a result, landowners along the Osage River should be expecting a considerable swell over the next several days.  Over the past 3 weeks, the water elevation at Truman Lake had risen from 710 to 722 feet.  The Lake of the Ozarks had peaked close to full pool at 659.17 feet on May 17, 2010.  AmrenU.E. wants to maintain the elevation throughout the Memorial Day weekend........

The Osage River is a tributary of the Missouri River, and was transformed into a chain of two reservoirs with the construction of the Bagnell Dam, creating Lake of the Ozarks, and then later the Truman dam was added upstream, creating the Harry S Truman Reservoir........

The Great River Road

And, The Longest National Scenic Byway Is...

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration recently designated the 10 state, 3,000 mile long, Great River Road as a National Scenic Byway, in all 10 states.  Recently, portions of The Great River Road in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee attained their official designation as National Scenic Byways.   The National Scenic Byway designation for all 10 Mississippi River states is a major victory for the Mississippi River Parkway Commission.  The MRPC was founded in 1938, and was intended to develop and manage the Great River Road.  The NSB designation will bring more visitors and federal funding to the center of the country........

Enjoy Free Fishing Days in Missouri June 12-13
Monday, May 24, 2010

Share a pastime that can last a lifetime. Along with the fish, you may catch some priceless memories.

JEFFERSON CITY MO – Discover the lure of Missouri outdoors with Free Fishing Days on June 12 and 13. Each year the Missouri Department of Conservation designates the weekend after the first Monday in June for permit-optional fishing. The goal of Free Fishing Days is to encourage people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities. During Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in the Show-me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp or trout park daily tag.

Missouri is blessed with more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. Fly fish for trout in a spring-fed Ozark stream or trotline for monster catfish on Missouri’s Big Rivers. Our waters hold ancient paddlefish and sturgeon, ferocious muskies, wary bass and tasty bluegill, crappie and walleye. More than 200 different fish species live here, and 40 of them are the targets of anglers.

Normal regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Regulations are outlined in the 2010 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations available at bait shops and other stores where fishing permits are sold, or online at www.MissouriConservation.org. Some private fishing areas still require permits on free fishing days, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property.

Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many state-owned fishing areas also have special facilities for anglers with disabilities. To learn more about fishing and find local spots, visit www.Missouri Conservation.org and search “fishing” or contact the nearest Conservation Department office.

Asian Carp Update

    Latest Poisoning Yields No Carp........

The recent poisoning of the Little Calumet River near Chicago may have brought in over 100,000 pounds of fish, none of them were of the Asian carp variety.  Thursday, state and federal teams applied Rotenone to a 2 1/2 mile stretch of the Little Calumet River, where Asian carp DNA had been found.  Officials state that over 40 different species of fish were killed, indicating that if there are carp in the area, there are not many........

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 170 (rembering what its all about)
05/24/2010

Daily stats
Start: 6:00 AM- State line on Assateague Island, MD
Finish: 2:00 PM - Ocean City, MD
Time: 8:00 Hours
Daily dist: 20 miles
Total dist: 3200+ miles
Companions: None
Weather: 10+ mph head wind, fog sun then fog then less fog then more fog…
Notes: A long day for not much mileage. I normally do 20miles in five hours

Today was challenging from the start. At 4:30 AM my internal alarm clock went off and I woke to the walls of my tent already shaking in the wind. Apparently the 5-10 mph winds that had been predicted had grown and got an early start. After loading the boat and strapping or tying down anything that could be swept off the boat I launched through the surf and paddled swiftly out past the breakers. I then turned the Ikkuma 90 degrees left and paddled north into the fog.

   Marquis Adding Workers........

After exiting bankruptcy with new owners, Marquis has added employees, taking their roster from a few dozen only a few months ago, to 235.  Marquis plans to add to that number later in the summer for a total of around 275 employees.  Marquis constructs both of the former Genmar brands, Marquis and Carver, and has achieved a production rate of a boat per week.  This rate of construction was achieved much sooner than company officials had anticipated.  To put things into persprective, Marquis production was at a standstill in January........

Missouri River

Comment Phase Has Begun For 5 Year Study........

The fight over the use of the Missouri River between the Upper Basin and the Lower Basin has been going on for years, and has even been the cause of lawsuits.  A study by a Colorado consulting group has found that 8 of 10 people they have questioned believe that changes are needed in how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers control the River system.  A 5 year study has been authorized by congress to see whether charges are needed in the management of the River.  Some 41 meetings will be held throughout August to gather public comments about changes that may be needed in the 1944 plan for Missouri River management........

Making Headway - Weekly Column
    By Captain Larry Walker

There are a wide variety of symbols, abbreviations and terms on nautical charts that describe the physical condition of each waterway. There is much information on a nautical chart that can warn you about potential trouble and keep you where you want to be.

Among the most important items in any body of water are the things that you cannot see. That is, the conditions below the waterline. There are usually several unknowns that are nice to be aware of when you are traveling through an unfamiliar area. Your charts display many different symbols that will give you a "heads up" about what you might otherwise "run into."

Every boater wants to avoid the bottom, unless you are trying to set your anchor. For the most part, the bottom is not your friend, especially at high speeds. In addition to the water depth, there are other things like shoals, wrecks and miscellaneous obstructions can turn a perfectly good day of boating into a disaster.

So what should you do when you see a symbol on your chart that looks like a "plus sign?" Does that mean that there is extra (plus) depth there? Does it mean that if you cruise over it you will "add" to the fun that you are already having? Unfortunately, it means none of those things. A "plus" symbol on NOS (National Ocean Service) charts represents a "dangerous underwater rock of uncertain depth." It actually turns out to be a minus!

What about the symbol that looks like the stitching on a football, inside a "dotted oval shape." No, it's not a recreation area. It represents a "dangerous wreck of unknown depth." If the symbol is shown without the dotted oval shape it represents a "sunken wreck that is "not" dangerous to surface navigation." There is even a symbol for a "submarine (underwater) volcano".

When in doubt, it is prudent to avoid the area near any symbol that you don't understand. If you're prepared, you'll have the key to all symbols, abbreviations and terms onboard. The Department of Commerce, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration and the National Ocean Service jointly published a 99-page reference book called Chart No. 1. It listed and explained all of the symbols, abbreviations and terms used on nautical charts. It is still available from other sources as a “non-government” publication.

There are times when you are looking for a specific type of bottom condition for anchoring, swimming, diving etc. Chart No. 1 will enable you to interpret your chart with accuracy. You may be looking for sand (S), mud (M) or clay (Cy or Cl), depending on which type of anchor you carry. Using the wrong anchor for the bottom can lead to a "moonlight cruise" that you didn't plan on.

If you are out for diving or snorkeling, rocks (Rk or rky) or coral (Co) may be desirable. Those areas are hard to find without the key to abbreviations and symbols. There are well over a thousand symbols used on charts. Even the best of us can't remember them all.

Chart No. 1 is available at most marine stores. The price is about $10. It should be part of your collection of marine publications and kept aboard your vessel. It is easy to use and very informative.

Until next time, I wish you clear skies, fair winds and calm seas!

“Bill Brasses 12/1/1928 - 5/19/2010

Bill Brasses Eulogy.........

Bill told me his Grandma once asked him, “Know why people die?” He said “No Grandma why?” She said “To make room for somebody else.” He thought she was pretty smart.
Bill was born December 1, 1928. He grew up in Maplewood Missouri. He worked at White Castle when it was on the corner of Sutton and Manchester where the Katz Drug Store used to be. He gave out too many castles to the girls and they fired him. Imagine that! Bill did love women, even back then as a kid!
After that he worked at Wallace Pencil Company. He wondered “How did people work before the pencil was invented?” Different inventions, even the most minute intrigued him. “What would life be like without the safety pin”, he asked.
Bill served in the military as did all men back then. He was in the Navy and was Navy Seabee and served in World War II.
He worked for many years in a machine shop working with steel as a machinist.
He met the love of his life Jeannie. Bill and Jeannie had a farm in Bonne Terre. They grew crops and plowed their fields. They also bred horses and loved to ride them.
They purchased a night club called “Footloose”. Okay it was a strip club. Bill was in his glory! Next door they had a gas station and small convenience store to help keep the money rolling in. Bill was always finding ways to make money.
Well enough was enough and they decided to sell the farm and almost everything they owned. They packed up and moved to a houseboat on the river in Woodland Marina. Yes, they were almost like the Beverly Hillbillies. They never owned a boat in their life! They named the boat “Footloose” after their night club and named their dinghy “Lil Dancer”. They loved living on that boat and they loved each other very much.
I remember celebrating a birthday for Jeannie at Boschertown. Her brother carried in a small basket and set it in front of her. Low and behold, in that basket was a little white dog. You should have seen the look on Bill’s face. He said, “Oh my God!” as he often did and covered his face, peaking through his fingers. He said, “We can’t have a dog on a boat!” Boy was he mad. But as it turns out, Skipper ended up being Bill’s best friend.
Jeannie had kidney problems and she routinely had to have dialysis. One day when coming home after her treatment, she was driving on Elm, and she ran into a tractor trailer. Jeannie died instantly. I’ll never forget that night. At that point in time, Bill’s life changed and he turned to Skipper. They went everywhere together. When Skipper couldn’t go in where Bill was, he’d keep the car running for the A/C or heat so he’d be comfortable. They were best of buddies!
Bill never left a stone unturned. He was always active. He said he really appreciated life and did something different every day. He liked to create new things.
Bill also loved talking with people and sharing his experiences. As Krista would say, “He was the greatest story teller ever!” So be thinking of those stories because we want you to share those with all of us a little later on.
He was a wise old man who loved to share his words of wisdom. He once told me “Trust is the most worthiest thing in the world. It all comes down to trust. Don’t waste time listening to someone you don’t trust.
Greed is the biggest sin in the world. If you look at all the histories, greed was dominated. I would imagine if people would share what they have instead of taking from people that have stuff, we’d all be a lot better off.
He said, “I’m not as good as I could have been but I do love all the people in the world. “
He also said life is unexpected. Always expect the unexpected.

Bill loved to live life. The poem that is on the card that Greg Sadowski so beautifully designed is one that Donna Smith found. When we read it we both thought this holds so true to Bill. He lived every day for that day. And I know he would want each one of you to do the same.

During the last few months Bill struggled to continue as best as he could. He never gave up. One day recently, I told him it was important to me to know that he was okay with God. So I asked him, are you okay with God Bill?” He said, Don’t worry. Me and the Big Guy up there are pretty tight. And I believe that. Bill was at peace with God. Just on Tuesday, the day before he died, a dear friend of ours, Steve Gilbert was visiting Bill and Steve asked if they could pray together and what was his favorite prayer. Bill asked if they could say the Lord’s prayer. It was the prayer he said most often. I’d like all of us to share this prayer together.

Our Father who art in Heaven
Hallowed by Thy Name
Thy Kingdom Come
Thy Will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespassed against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For Thyne is the Kingdom, and the Power and the Glory Forever
Amen

Steve was not able to be here today but I talked to him and asked him if he had any suggestions on what I could say today. He shared this with me.

It has been said that life is what happens while we are waiting for something important to happen. NONE of us will get out of here alive! There is a saying when someone is very ill, that they are at death’s door. That’s all death is, it’s a doorway. A transition from this physical life to our promised eternal life. Just like birth is a transition from our first unborn stage to life on earth, so to death is our “birth” into eternal life. It may be a scary step but there is nothing to be afraid of. All we must do is accept Our Lord’s ultimate gift. If we hold out our hands to accept His gift, it is ours. But it is a step we must take in order to receive it. It is the ultimate “LEAP OF FAITH”. As Buzz Lightyear said,
“To Infinity & Beyond”.

I think that besides having a loving family by our side, the greatest gift that God can give any of us after the gift of His own Son is the gift of true friends. Someone to share our greatest successes & our saddest disappointments with. We are surrounded by Bill’s friends. Bill was blessed with many friends. AND WE WERE TRULY BLESSED BY KNOWING HIM! We will miss you Bill. But we know that it is you that have won and we will see you again.

Bill and Jeannie both donated their bodies to St. Louis University. In memory of the joys and the love that Bill had for his friends and the river we as that each of you take a flower and toss it into the river. When we had the memorial service for Jeannie we also each threw a flower into the river. Let this be a symbol of them being reunited again.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THERE’S NO REASON NOT TO WEAR IT!

(Washington, D.C.) It’s too hot! It doesn’t look cool. I know how to swim. Nothing is going to happen to me. These are just some of the many reasons people claim that they do not wear their life jackets. But with approximately 700 people drowning each year from recreational boating accidents, it is imperative for you to wear your life jacket at all times while you are on the water. Life jackets are no longer the orange, hot and bulky life jackets that are commonly associated with on the water safety gear. New innovations and developments in life jackets have produced a smaller, sleeker, and much more comfortable version of a life jacket, leaving you with no reason not to WEAR IT!!

Much like a helmet to a biker or skate boarder, life jackets are an essential part of your boating safety equipment and should be worn at all times while on the water. In 2008 of the 709 recreational boating fatalities, over 89% of those victims not wearing their life jackets. Life jackets are now lighter, less obtrusive and more attractive than ever before. The new inflatable life jackets allows you the mobility and flexibility that you need when boating, fishing, paddling or hunting and are much cooler in the warmer weather. There are many different varieties of inflatable jackets ranging from those that inflate instantly when you hit the water to those that are manually inflated. All are designed to be more comfortable and wearable than the traditional life jacket.Accidents can happen at an alarming speed anyplace or anytime you are on the water. Although many boaters stow life jackets on their boat, very few choose to wear it. There just isn’t time to grab a life jacket and put it on properly before you are in the water. If you are faced with a strong current or unfavorable weather conditions you will not only have trouble making sure you are safe and secure in your life jacket, but you will be unable to help your friends, relatives, children or passengers that have accompanied you in your boat. Wearing your life jacket will allow you to be safe in case of an accident and will also allow you the ability to assist others that may be in danger

This year during National Safe Boating Week, and throughout the boating season remember to practice safe and responsible boating, always wear your life jacket, and be alert and aware while on the water. By practicing these simple steps you can save your life as well as the lives of the people boating with you. Life jackets are now more comfortable and lightweight than ever, with many new styles to fit the style you want. Safe boating saves lives so for this year’s North American Safe Boating Week (May 22–28, 2010) and throughout the boating season remember to WEAR IT!

Bill Brasses Memorial

Bill was a man that loved to live life and enjoyed every moment of it. He and "Skipper" were the best of pals and were inseparable. Bill's favorite times were being with friends and being on the river, not to mention drinking a Miller Lite. He was a member of Con Trios Yacht Club and a friend to everyone he met. Bill will truly be missed.

Bill hailed out of North Shore Marina in the boat "Footloose".

Please come and celebrate the life of Captain Bill Brasses. We will gather at Sharky’s on Sunday May 23rd at 3:00 PM.”

River Reading

Minnesota Man Pens Tome About A Canoe Trip Down The Mississippi.....

Gary Hoffman, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, has written a book called "Mighty Miss" about a canoe trip he and his son took in 2002 down the Mississippi River.  Paddling between 40 and 65 miles per day, the pair made the trek from Itasca, Minnesota to New Orleans, Louisiana in 45 days.  Hoffman says that the book is not a how-to, but rather a series of short stories, told in chronological order. Though the father and son team had many exciting adventures, Hoffman stated that the best part of the trip was meeting people that live on the River........

Gulf Of Mexico Oils Spill Update

     Wetlands Cleanup May Be Impossible........

With news that BP's latest attempt to plug off the blown out well head will not happen until Tuesday, officials are considering some drastic measures to clean the oily muck from Louisiana's delicate coastal wetlands.  Methods under consideration are flooding and fire, however, the experts concede that such drastic measures could in fact do more harm than good.  Perhaps the best answer is to do nothing, and let nature take it's course.  At this point, more than 50 miles of the delicate Louisiana coastline has been tarnished with the oil slick........

An ingredient that is used in the manufacture of laundry detergent has been identified as the substance that was dumped into the Fox River, causing a fish kill last weekend.  Called alkybenzene sulfonic acid, it is an anionic surfactant "that fully wets the surface being cleaned, so dirt is easily loosened and removed".   The source of the chemical was D&Y Recycling, who was occupying a building illegally.  Code enforcement officers have written six tickets in response to the illegal occupation, and the illegal dumping.  Each of the tickets carry a $50 fine........

Boat Gas Prices Likely To Fall For Memorial Day........

Marinas that purchase gas later in the week are giving boaters reason to celebrate.  Most gas docks are still sitting on last weeks gas orders and are keeping their prices at around $3.19-$3.20.  Kelly's Port is now the low-price leader, selling gas at $2.99.  It is likely that the price declination will continue into the Memorial Day Weekend........

Wondering if you could post about the high water and property damage that could possibly happen when the boats throw big rollers into the homes along the river. It"s gonna be a beautiful weekend and a lot of us will be underwater on our river property lots. The large wakes cause damage to windows, foundations, etc.

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 167
05/21/2010

 Daily stats
Start: 7:00 AM- Fort Monroe, VA
Finish: 4:30 PM - Oyster, VA
Time: 9:30
Daily dist: 32 miles
Total dist: 3000+ miles
Companions: Vic Sorensen for the first hour and a visit with Kayak Kevin at noon
Weather: Absolutely perfect weather warm and glassy smooth
Notes: 20 mile crossing of entrance of Chesapeake

This morning Vic gave me a ride back to the Fort Monroe boat ramp where we pulled out last Sunday. Both of us launched again and Vic accompanied me for the first few miles of the day. After we parted ways I set a course of 60 degrees and paddled toward a flat watery horizon in search of land on the other side of the bay.

A few hours later after enjoying perfect weather and very smooth water I arrived at the eastern end of the Chesapeake bridge tunnel. There waiting for me on the other side, on his way out fishing, was Kayak Kevin whom I mentioned I met the other day when he stopped by to go over the local navigation charts with me. Kevin and I chatted for a few minutes then I continued north once again toward the tiny town of Oyster Virginia.

News Releases

For more information on the National Safe Boating Council and the North American Safe Boating Campaign, visit www.SafeBoatingCouncil.org.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting my picture yesterday, Bennie got a big kick out of seeing it on your website! I got a nice text from Rick Estes, former owner of our boat, when he saw the picture. We are looking forward to meeting them this year if we can ever get the boat out!

Attached is a picture taken last night (Tue,. 5-20-10) at the Plattin Rock Boat Club. The pole with the mile marker is at the very top of the boat ramp…at the time the picture was taken, the river level was at 34 feet. At this rate we are never going to get out on the water!!! :-(

Have a great day,
Mary

Watch Your Wake !

Hi Bill

Wondering if you could post about the high water and property damage that could possibly happen when the boats throw big rollers into the homes along the river. It"s gonna be a beautiful weekend and a lot of us will be underwater on our river property lots. The large wakes cause damage to windows, foundations, etc.

Just asking for everyone to think about their wake and have a fun weekend.....

Metro East Floodplain Insurance Update

    FEMA To Offer Cut-Rate Insurance........

Even with the push to draw up new floodplain maps nationwide, property owners may catch a break on the price of flood insurance. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill stated that FEMA is offering the flood insurance at heavily discounted rates for a period of two years.  This is good news for property owners in the American Bottom area that includes Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties in Illinois.  The price cuts could bring premiums down around $300/year, or 4 to 5 times less than what the rates would have been........

Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill Updat

Spill Greater Than Imagined, May Be Shut Off By Next Week........

BP officials have announced that the oil gusher may be shut down as early as next week, on the heels of admitting the the spill was larger than estimated previously.  BP's siphon tube is reportedly drawing out 5,000 barrels, or 210,000 gallons of crude per day, and pumping it to a ship on the surface.  BP has also released a video showing crude oil spewing out around the siphon tube.  A BP spokesman declined to comment on how much oil was escaping.  The Obama administration has ordered BP to post all information pertaining to the spill and subsequent clean-up efforts on a website, and update it daily........

Jake The Kayaker 6100 mile Great Loop Adventure

Jake The Kayaker Update........

Day 165 - 166
05/20/2010

The highlight of the last two days came via a batch of pictures and videos my sister-in-law Amy sent of my nephew Noah riding a bike without training wheels. He’s due to turn five in just a few weeks and seeing those images of him tooling around on two wheels reminded me of how much I’m looking forward to being back with my family back in Wisconsin. I can’t wait to be Uncle Jake full time not just on holiday visits

Lake Of The Ozarks

    E. Coli Levels Off Of The Charts........

After more than a week of rain and statewide flooding, E. Coli tests performed at Osage Beach pegged the Department of Natural Resources test scales.  Osage Beach was not alone, as similar levels of E. Coli were detected at Mark Twain Lake and Pomme de Terre.  A DNR spokesman stated that the extremely high test results were not unexpected following a week of rain.  The DNR tests public beaches two weeks prior to Memorial Day in order to compare test results with those taken in previous years.  In 2009, the high E. Coli results were not released until after Memorial Day, igniting an effort to crack down on Lake businesses with non-compliant wastewater treatment facilities........

Asian Carp Update

Little Calumet River Poisoned To Search For Carp........

For the next few days, the Little Calumet River will be closed to pleasure and commercial vessels because biologists have dumped Rotenone into the River to kill Asian carp.  The chemical is not hazardous to humans or other wildlife, because it affects the fish's ability to absorb oxygen.  An earlier fish kill that was conducted last year, about 35 miles downstream, only netted one carp.  So far, there has been no Asian carp found in the Great Lakes........

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

     Grafton Looking For Funding........

While disaster and federal funding is available, the city of Grafton, Illinois is aggressively pursuing it.  The Grafton City Council has passed a resolution to apply for an Illinois State Community Development Block Grant for the "Midwest" Disaster Recovery Program.  This grant would supplement the FEMA funds that will be used for buy-outs from the floods of 2008.  Jersey County is eligible for a portion of of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity "Ike" Grant  that would fund the buyouts of small and large businesses damaged by the 2008 flooding, as well as affordable housing and public infrastructure........

The Pictures of the Day ......were sent to us by Capt Gregory Moore

Bill,

I trust that this message finds you and yours doing well!

I think we have been at the same location at the same time but, I never have had the pleasure of meeting you! I look Forward to meeting you.

Attached are two pictures of us boating on Lake Michigan in Chicago. The date is on the pictures.

One picture is taken from Lake Michigan, notice the haze? Very hot and humid that day approaching Chicago. The other is of the memorial for the fire department just off of Lake Michigan in the Chicago river. The fountain sprays over the Chicago River every hour on the hour.

Both pictures are of Karen and I in the "270 Rinker Gettin By IV".

I was living in Portage IN. at the time. We enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan for the entire season. It was about 33 miles across Lake Michigan from Portage to downtown Chicago. We made the trip at least eight times that season. As well as going up the Michigan side of the Lake where we attended the Michigan City "In the Water Boat Show.

We were able to attend "The Taste of Chicago, The Chicago Blues Fest, The Chicago Water and Air Show" as well as several other events.

It was very comfortable to arrive at Chicago while the various summer activities were in progress. There were only limited routes for cars due to the events and the numbers of visitors. But, by being there by boat we moored at Monroe Harbor about one hundred feet from Lake Shore Drive! The cost, at that time, to dock was $27.00. $1.00/foot. The last time I traveled to Chicago it cost $45.00 for my car to spend the night! And we never needed to get a room!
