RiverBill's New Holiday Banner

Bill,

I had to share this with you. I was breathless when I saw the Holiday banner on Riverbills this am. The boat is just like ours "Whoz Yer Daddy". I just for a second had a visual... The background is beautiful..the house, the snow and most important "the star". A real warm fuzzy.

May the spirit stay with you and yours all year.

Susan Bullington

RiverBill says..... Susan, I'm so glad you like the new banner.....It's a photo of Palisades Yacht Club with a bit of Photoshop.

You know.....I think the boat is the picture could be "Whoz Your Daddy" !

Mississippi River Safety

PORTS System Expected To Improve River Safety.................

According to a news article from nola.com...............  When the USS New York was heading down the Mississippi River on her inaugural voyage, her navigators were using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) new PORTS system to make sure the vessel's superstructure could clear the metal suspended below the Huey P. Long Bridge.

The Physical Oceanographic Real-time System (PORTS) can use data from up to 50 instruments, including water level gauges, and devices used to measure atmospheric conditions. The information PORTS can provide can also help officials track spills in the river, in addition to sea level rise.

The PORTS system, is available in 20 locations, including several gulf ports, the Great Lakes, as well as both coasts.............

 Maritime Accidents

Tug Grounded On Same Reef As Exxon Valdez................

According to a news report from fox4now.com................  A tugboat that was put into service to assist with preventing oil spills in the Prince William Sound, ran aground on Bligh Reef Wednesday.  This is the same reef that the Exxon Valdez grounded on 20 years ago.

Two of the fuel tanks aboard the 136 foot long vessel were damaged, and a fuel sheen 3 miles long, and 30 feet wide had drifted away from the tug.

After clearing the reef, the tug's crew deployed some 200 feet of fuel containment booms.  Unlike the Exxon Valdez, the tug has only diesel fuel aboard, which will eventually evaporate.............

Naval Vessels

New Ship Honors Those Lost On 9/11.............

According to a news article from mooreamerican.com................ The Northrup Grumman Shipbuilding yard is currently constructing a new San Antonio-class amphibious transport ship.  The vessel is designated LPD-25, and she will be christened the USS Somerset.

The name Somerset is for the county in Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed, killing 40 passengers and crew, and 4 hijackers.  The USS Somerset will use 22 tons of steel from a dragline that had loomed over the crash site.

The designation LPD, or "Landing Platform Dock", refers to how the vessel can be used by smaller vessels.  LPD-25 will have the ability to submerge it's stern, allowing hovercraft to launch from the ship.   LPD-25 will be able to carry over 600 Marines, and their equipment, and even features a flight deck large enough for helicopter operations...........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Annual Lowering Of The Lake Begins Soon...........

According to a news report from lakeexpo.com............  AmrenUE has announced that the annual practice of lowering Lake levels is scheduled to begin soon, and dock owners may wish to take precautions to prevent damage to their docks.

AmrenUE usually lowers Lake levels by several feet over the winter months to increase the reservoir's storage capacity for the spring rainy season.  The drop should begin around January 1, 2010, and reach a seasonal low of around 654 feet by the middle of February.

Tips to reduce the chance of damage to docks due to lower levels, and winter conditions include:

Disconnect hinges securing the dock to piers, or seawalls, to allow the dock to "ride" the level down.

Lengthen cables to allow the dock to follow the water level down.

Ask a neighbor, or hire a caretaker to keep an eye on the dock, and property.

Employ "bubblers" or other means to combat dock damage due to ice...............

Marine Legislation

Working Waterfront Bill Supported By MRAA..........

According to a news article from tradeonlytoday.com.............  Recently, a letter from the Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA) was sent to U.S. Representative, Chellie Pingree, D- Maine, in support of the Working Waterfronts Grants Bill.

The MRAA believes that our nation's cultural heritage is deeply rooted to the working waterfronts, and several coastal waterfronts rely on that heritage to draw customers in for restaurants, shops, and marine related businesses.

The MRAA asserts that H.R. 2548 would begin to focus on industry wide issues such as water access, technical job creation and retention...............

Apparently, stopping the flow of sewage will not be an easy task, with thousands of unregulated septic tanks, and many wastewater treatment plants that are violating state law.  The issue will require a lot of money, manpower, changes in regulations, and willpower..............

Bill,
The area reeks with a laid back atmosphere. (There is beauty wherever you are if we but look around---here is a case in point.)

This was taken near Taverese about 20 minutes North of Orlando. I love the look of the Spanish Moss, it just has a tranquil sense.

The company also noted that there is no expectation that there will be any value remaining for ordinary shareholders............

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota

Couple Rescued After Falling Into Mississippi River...........

According to a news article from kaaltv.com.............  After falling through ice on the Mississippi River, a Minneapolis, Minnesota couple were rescued by a passerby, who retrieved the pair with a dog leash.

The couple were visiting an off-leash area at a park along the Mississippi River, with their dog.  While getting a drink from the River, the pooch fell in.  Israel Llerena was able to save his dog, but went through the ice himself.  His girlfriend, Maddy Klienpaste, tried to save Llerena, but she too fell through the ice.

Luckily, another couple was nearby, and was able to retrieve the pair from the icy River, using a dog leash.  The couple visited the hospital for possible hypothermia, but were released a few hours later..............

Upper Missouri River

Breaks National Monument Issues Merits Study..........

According to a news article from greatfallstribune.com.............  With the disappearing cottonwood trees, and the dwindling pallid sturgeon populations, the recent two day conference held in Great Falls, Montana brings the possibility of restoring the populations.

The reasons cited for the declination of both species are the lack of natural flow variations along the upper Missouri River, due to dams.

The attendees of the conference included scientists, state and federal land and river managers, along with representatives from ranching and recreational interests.  The group agreed to form a task force early in 2010 to study the issues, and possible solutions more in-depth............

Hey Bill,

Recently I came across two pictures I thought I'd share. Both of them are of my "Somebeach". Isn't it amazing how the same scene can look so much different? And how each conveys a completely different feeling or emotion? They say-beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, it's really hard to believe that anyone could see much beauty in pic 2-blahhh! But hey, I'm just a warm blooded river rat waiting for spring!

Hello everyone,

I regret to inform you that sometime yesterday afternoon (Friday Dec. 18th) while I was in town charging batteries and gathering water and supplies, a very large portion of my camping equipment as well as vital paddling gear was stolen from the bank where I was planning to set up camp that evening. I still have my boat, paddles, and electronics (which I took into town to charge) but most of the rest is gone.

Right now I’m being aided by two amazing residents of New Madrid Missouri, David and Cheryl White while the better half of the local police force is working hard to recover my belongings. David and Cheryl have set me up with a place to stay for a few days while my old replacement gear is being sent in from home. I’ve already made calls to two some of my sponsors and North Face and Kokatat are working on sending in what they can.

The fact remains that a large amount of gear is going to need to be purchased outright. A list of most of what was taken can be found below but I’m sure my memory is missing a few small items.

I guess my trip is on hold indefinitely while replacement gear can be found. In the mean time please pray that the lead the police are pursuing might lead them to my gear. Also if you know anybody (or know anybody who knows anybody) that lives in the Southeast corner of Missouri in or around the New Madrid area please tell them to be on the lookout for high-tech camping and paddling gear that you wouldn’t normally find in a local duck hunter’s blind or fisherman’s truck.

I need your help in spreading the word about this in hopes of finding that gear.

Instead of focusing on the couple of bad people who may have done this, instead I’d like to make note of the many good residents of this town that have already stepped up to help me through this situation.
Thank you everybody for all your support.

Jake

Mississippi Riverfront At St. Louis, Missouri

City Looking At More Dock Expansions.............

According to a news report from stltoday.com.............  Next month, St. Louis officials will find out if the city will be receiving $32 million in federal stimulus grant funding for the expansion of the municipal docks.  This grant would be a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant.

Friday, the city received a $15.6 million Commerce Department grant for the replacement of the south dock.  The south dock was in poor condition prior to being damaged during last year's floods.

All of the dock work is intended to capitalize on the Panama Canal expansion, as well as being the northernmost ice free port, and put St. Louis on the map as an international shipping hub...........

New Mississippi River Bridge Update

What Will Be In Store For The High Bridge Bids?

According to a news article from bnd.com............  On January 6, 2010, the Missouri Highway Commission will likely be pondering what to do with the 2 bids on the new Mississippi River Bridge, that were $39 million, and $84 million higher than budget.

The commission has the option of accepting one bid, or rejecting both bids, and starting the bidding process all over again.

These bids are for the main span of the bridge project, and makes up about a third of the total $640 million cost.  Missouri is putting up $88 million, Illinois is kicking in $313 million, and the feds are contributing $239 million............

Mississippi River Bridge Update

    Missouri To Renegotiate Bridge Deal?

According to a news story from fox2now.com............  Given the over budget bids for the new Mississippi River Bridge project, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has alluded to having to start the negotiations with Illinois all over again.

The way the agreement stands at this time, Missouri would cover any cost overruns on the project, as agreed in February, 2008

Nixon states that Missouri may not wish to live up to that agreement, and would renegotiate a new cost sharing agreement that is more appropriate.   Illinois officials have already stated that Missouri will pay the overruns as agreed in 2008...........

Little Osage River

Comment Period Extended For Little Osage River...........

According to a news article from waterworld.com..........  The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has announced that they have extended the commentary period on the proposal for cleaning up the Little Osage River in Vernon County.

The Little Osage River's headwaters are in Kansas, and it flows into Missouri before joining the Marais des Cygnes to form the Osage River, one of the main stems of both Truman Lake and the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Little Osage is listed as impaired due to low dissolved oxygen levels, and the water does not meet Missouri State water quality standards.

The public comment period was originally set to end on December 13, 2009, but has been extended to Monday, December 28, 2009.............

The Picture of the Day ....... is another from Capt'n Milt Ohlsen of the cruiser Sea Fox.  Milt and his wife Fran used to hail out of the Duck Club Yacht Club, but now live aboard their boat and travel the eastern seaboard of the United States.....

Bill,

An unusually heavy fog last nite provided a nice coating on this web.
Looking thru the lines presented an interesting view across the
fairway and the pattern is quite artistic.

Happy Holidays to the Mississippi River boaters!

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day from 2006 ------ was of Dale (left) and Dave (right) taking a harbor cruise at Two Branch Marina last year !     Nice day for a ride.

Actually they are paddling Dale's boat lift to the ramp to take it out of the water.  Notice they are wearing their life jackets.....And... Dale is paddling with a shovel.

Missouri River Shipping

MoDOT Focuses On Missouri River Barge Traffic............

According to a news item from komu.com............  Since the Missouri River shipping season is likely to run it's full course this year, Missouri officials see good reason to expand barge traffic along the Missouri River.

In the past, long running droughts, and low reservoir levels up river has shortened every shipping season since 2001.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), has announced that the anticipated federal funds, to the tune of $900,000, would be used for a market study on how to increase Missouri River shipping, and how to keep shipping schedules more consistent, even during periods of low water.............
