An overnight snow and ice storm hit the St. Louis area reaping havoc on the area marinas.

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.  One of Missouri's favorite native son's

MARK TWAIN

 ON

THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. When he was four years old, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri , a small town on the Mississippi River. As a little boy he always dreamed of someday being a steamboat pilot.

Clemens’ father died in 1847 and it was then that he took a job as an apprentice with Joseph Ament, who was the publisher at the Missouri Courier. Clemens submitted his first published sketches when he was only 16 years old. He worked as a printer for two at Western Union and moved around for awhile, working as a printer in several cities including Philadelphia and New York City.

In 1857, Clemens went back to the Mississippi River and became a cub steamboat pilot and after two years, he received his river pilot license. He worked as a steamboat pilot until river traffic was stopped due to the Civil War in 1861. At that point, Clemens volunteered with the Confederate Calvary. His life with the Calvary was short lived and in 1862, he moved out west to the Nevada territory to mine for silver.

He also began working as a reporter for the Virginia Territorial Enterprise in 1862 and soon after started using the pen name, “Mark Twain.” This name came from his days of working as a riverboat pilot. Mark Twain was the phrase used by the crew when they were traveling through low water. They used a sounding line to see how deep the water was. Once it reached two fathoms or 12 feet, it meant they were in deep waters and it was clear to move on, they yelled out to the Captain, “Mark Twain,” to let him know everything was good to go.

Clemens loved the Mississippi River, but he probably didn’t always enjoy the it the same way we do now, because he was usually working on the river. However, in some of his books, he describes the life of playing on the river as a child. Even though he never returned to the Mississippi River after his river pilot days, he did write about it and his experiences on the river.

Clemens lived in many places throughout his lifetime. He lived in St. Louis, San Francisco, New York City and many places in between including Germany and Europe.

. In 1870, Clemens married Ms. Olivia Langdon in Buffalo, New York and soon after moved to Connecticut where Clemens wrote some of his best stories. Clemens wrote many books in his lifetime. Most of them were about his life experiences.
Some of his most famous writings were about the river.... “Life on the Mississippi River,” “Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

Clemens was known mainly as a humorist while he was alive: however; his vivid characters, his use of language and the wonderful description of setting transformed American literature. He has also given us a historical perception of the Mississippi River and what went on there in his time.

What a genius.

Asian Carp Update

Great Lakes Anglers Concerned About Carp Invasion.............

According to a news article from thetimesherald.com...............  As the news that the Asian carp may have breached that electric barriers installed in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Great Lakes fishermen have begun to worry.

Vic Ruehle, president of the Blue Water Sportfishing Association, stated that it would wipe out Lake Huron, all of the native species would be lost.

The carp can grow as large as 7 feet long, and weigh over 100 lbs.  The carp are filter feeders, and consume plant and animal plankton.  They have no natural predators...........

Bill,

Here is a picture taken last Saturday the (July) 18th of Bill & Tammy Garness upon their return trip from Wabasha, MN. Bill & Tammy's boat is a 44' Gibson by the name of Off Duty. Their home port is Two Rivers Marina. They left Two Rivers on July the 4th and traveled upriver along with Bill's 2 brothers who had driven down from MN, on their return trip Bill's 2 sister accompanied them back to Two Rivers, where they arrived safe and sound on the 18th. We had a welcome home reception waiting for them. They had great stories of their adventures on the Mississippi River to share with us.

Thanks for the great job you do of keeping us all up to date about what's going on on the river.

Hey, Bill,

Thanks to procrastination, we had one more great day on the water. We've been putting off winterizing the Y2Katy for weeks now and seeing how old man winter took a few days off, Mary and I cruised down to the Grafton Harbor on Friday. We had an excellent lunch at the Grafton Harbor Bar and Grill, then we headed upriver to the Two Branch sluice and spent a couple of very relaxing hours on the boat and on the sandbar. But unfortunately, we did end up winterizing after we got back to Lake Center. I guess the fun's over until next spring.

Flood Insurance

Officials Fighting Mandatory Insurance Say Coverage Good Idea.............

According to a news report from stltoday.com............  While Metro East officials are embattled with the feds over forced flood insurance for the American Bottoms property owners, leaders are saying that purchasing coverage now may not be such a bad idea.

The thought is that if flood insurance is purchased now, and the property is reclassified as high risk, the lower insurance premiums would still remain.

Whatever the results are of the political pie fight regarding mandatory flood insurance, repairs to the deficient Metro East Mississippi River levees are still a ways off.............

Mississippi River Levees At New Orleans

Reconstructed Levees Need To Be Rebuilt, Due To Debris..........

According to a news article from nola.com...............  A previously reconstructed portion of a New Orleans, Louisiana hurricane protection levee, is now being rebuilt again, because it contains too much debris.  Boh Bros. Construction Company, contractor on that project, stated that  an internal review uncovered no debris issues.

The debris was discovered in the top two and a half feet of the levee, by another contractor, Southern Services and Equipment, Inc.,  who is raising and widening the levee.  The debris is primarily concrete, with some pieces of metal and wood.

Corps levee guidelines allow up to 1% "unsuitable material" in levee construction material.  Southern Services has removed several thousand cubic yards of unsuitable levee material, and has begun reconstruction with freshly excavated clay.............

Red River In North Dakota

Unique Solution To Flooding - Dig Another River............

According to a news story from startribune.com..............  On the heels of historic flood levels, and the consequent sandbagging and dike construction efforts to protect Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota from the Red River, comes a plan to alleviate flooding in the future.  Construct an alternate channel.

The basic plan would excavate a channel, that would be a third of a mile wide, 30 feet deep, and flow 25 miles around Moorhead.  This undertaking comes with a price tag of $962 million, and is estimated to flow more than twice the amount of water that the Mississippi River flows through downtown Minneapolis.

Alternative plans would have water flowing around Fargo, with a cost estimate up to $1.3 billion.  The cost - benefit ratio on the alternative plan is not as high as the basic plan, however............

Asian Carp Update

Bad News - Good News About Carp In The Lakes...........

According to a news story from freep.com...........  Scientists at the Department of Natural Resources Lake Huron are asking important questions, now that the Asian carp is knocking on the Great Lakes' door.  Will the carp consume algae that covers thousands of miles of the lakes, and can they reproduce in the still waters of the Great Lakes?

Ph.D. researcher, Je He, who earned his master's degree studying Asian carp in China, had some answers.  First, bighead and silver carp will eat the prolific green (cladophora) algae, and the silver carp will eat and possibly make worse, the toxic blue-green algae that has taken over where the zebra mussels have consumed the green algae.

The good news is that specific conditions are needed for the carp to spawn, namely, current speed that allows the eggs to float free for 5 days, prior to landing on a oxygenated, rocky nursery area. If the eggs land too soon, they will die.  Proper water temperatures are also critical..............

Arch Grounds Design Competition Starts In Spring...........

According to a news report from stltoday.com............  The design competition for the Arch Grounds is set to begin in the spring, with the announcement of details pertaining to the competition, with design submissions being accepted in the summer. A design may be chosen as early as next fall.

Back in October, the Park Service had announced their plans for the park, from enhancing pedestrian access between the park and downtown, proposing that more activities be held at the north and south ends of the park, to the expansion of the park across the Mississippi River.

Park staff will be writing manuals for the competition over the winter, that will encourage designers to suggest new ways to use portions of the park.  The ultimate goal is to have all work completed by October 28, 2015, in time for the 50th anniversary of the installation of the final stainless steel piece............

Mississippi Scenic Highway

MoDOT Contemplates Reroute Of Scenic Highway..........

According to a news article from fox2now.com............  The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is considering the re-routing of a portion of Route 79, following a second closure of the highway.

A large pavement crack had appeared, prompting the closure, from Route TT at Ashburn to Route B east of Frankford, on Sunday.  This area is close to the site of an April, 2008 landslide that damaged the roadway, and forced a closure of two months.

According to MoDOT officials, relocation of the route is one of many options under consideration as a long term solution to landslides..............

Upper Mississippi River

Shipping Season Expected To Be Longer This Year...............

According to a news report from wsaw.com...........  Due to the soggy fall harvest season, grain shipments have fallen behind schedule along the upper Mississippi River.  Grain shipments are said to be off by around 50% through mid October.

Kent Pehler of Brennan Marine, service provider for barge lines at the port of La Crosse, Wisconsin, stated that while the first half November has been strong, the lost volume has yet to be made up.

Ron Johnson, of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority states that this year, the port Superior has seen an increase in grain shipments around 28% over last year.

Johnson says that the seaway locks will be closing December 29, 2009, and Pehler is expecting some limited grain loading through December 7, when the river locks are slated to close for maintenance.........

River Research

NGRREC's Director Driven By Love Of Rivers.............

In a news story from thetelegraph.com............  Richard "Rip" Sparks, the director of research at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, has been fascinated with streams, ponds and rivers, and everything he could learn about them, since he was a child.  And that fascination has been turned into a career.

In the '70s, Sparks accepted a position at the Havana, Illinois field station along the Illinois River.  Now as director of research for the NGRREC, his research projects are conducted so as to gain an understanding of how large rivers work.

Sparks is also responsible for putting together research proposals to such agencies as the U.S. EPA, and the National Science Foundation.  He also administrates the the competitive seed grant program, in hopes that small proposals will blossom into larger research projects..............

 Hi Bill,

I wanted to send you a few pics that were taken yesterday, Nov. 24, 2007. The skiing pics were taken in Snake Chute, and the boat pic was taken down at the Grafton marina. Pictured are my son Zac and our friend Caroline. They braved the 44 degree water yesterday for a ski run or two. Susie skiied a quick run as well, but no pictures of her!

Went to Grafton for some hot chocolate afterwards.

Another day on the river!

According to a news report from fox2now.com.............  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that they intend to prevent agricultural runoff originating in 41 watersheds, spanning twelve states, from entering the Mississippi River.

The runoff causes high nutrient and sediment levels in the river, causing areas of low oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico, referred to as "the dead zone".

The USDA is focusing on 12 states, including Missouri and Illinois, and has $320 million in funding for farmers that wish to slow down runoff............

Fountain Powerboats Update

    Reggie Reveals Reorganization Plan...........

According to a news report from tradeonlytoday.com............. The reorganization plan for Fountain Powerboat Industries will divide claims against the company into nine classes, and stipulates that the "allowed unsecured claims" will receive a portion of $1 million in full satisfaction of those claims.

Fountain stated that even though the plan offers the unsecured creditors less than full payment, the debtors believe that this distribution is considerably better than what could be gained through an orderly, or forced liquidation of Fountain Powerboat Industries.

After reorganization, Fountain Powerboat Industries will continue to operate as a boatbuilder, with a number of measures in place to improve profitability, while preventing another financial crisis.  Under this plan, Reggie Fountain will remain as president of the company.............

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Update ......Corps Monitoring Seepage Along Metro East Levees

According to a news article from thetelegraph.com...............  Geotechnical engineers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers returned to the wetlands along the River Heritage Parkway, to glean more data on the pressure creating under seepage at the Wood River Levee.

The engineers are gathering readings from eight piezometers, that measure water pressure.  The piezometers take a reading every four hours, and are connected to a hand-held logger.

During normal water level conditions, engineers will visit the wetlands weekly, but when the water levels rise, they will check the meters daily, as well as make visual inspections of boils and seepage areas............

Suit Filed To Halt Grazing Along Upper Missouri River...............

In a news report from greatfallstribune.com.............  An Idaho based environmental group, and two canoe guides have filed suit to ban 10,000 cattle from grazing along a 150 mile stretch of the Missouri River.  The land is located in the 586 square mile Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.

The suit claims that the cattle are damaging the monument's recreational opportunities.

The cattle producers responded that they are using the land responsibly, with the proper permits from federal Bureau of Land Management, and that this litigation may force them to go out of business............

Rehab Projects Moving Forward At Riverlands Sanctuary..................

According to a news report from thetelegraph.com..............  With the help of $4,377,613 in federal stimulus money, the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary is getting several improvement projects under way.  The Sanctuary flanks both sides of the Clark Bridge, on the Missouri bank of the Mississippi River.

The work is to be completed in two stages, starting with improvements at the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area on the west side of the bridge.  Crews cleaned out trails to better allow access to the River for shore fishing, and demolished the deteriorated restroom facilities, in anticipation of installing new facilities.

Other projects will include revamped railings, and hopefully some repair work on the confederate prisoner obelisk.  The monument was dedicated in 2002, in memory of those prisoners that died of smallpox.

Stage two will focus on the construction of the Riverlands Sanctuary Orientation Center, next to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Riverlands Demonstration Area  It is expected that some minor, general construction work beginning in December, with footing to be installed at a later time.............

According to a news article from wwwltv.com............  State Officials from Louisiana are pressuring the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to stop dumping sediment they dredge from the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico, and instead use it to reconstruct Louisiana's eroded wetlands.

State officials assert that the Corps is wasting up to 20 million cubic yards of dredged material annually, and that up to 10 square miles of wetlands could be built with that sediment

The Corps responded that over the past twenty years, they have created 25,000 acres of wetlands with dredged sediment............

New York's Life Jacket Law 1

NEW YORK--Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Mike Canamella, from Coast Guard Station Kings Point, N.Y., fills out a form during a safety boarding on a recreational boat in Long Island Sound, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2009. Boarding teams from the Coast Guard and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation conducted educational outreach to recreational boaters with boats 21-feet and under in length regarding a new, New York State law, which says that each boater on board must be wearing a life jacket while underway during the winter months. The change in the state boating law was enacted in November of 2009 after a rash of incidents resulting in fatalities with boaters who were not actually wearing their life jacket. Just having a personal flotation device accessible while underway is not enough; life jackets must be worn.

The Picture of the Day ..... was sent to us by Capt'n Chuck Britton, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis.  Chuck sent us this pic back in July and it never got posted.... so here it is !

River Bill,

Here is a picture of our trip down to the Arch on Monday July 13th. We left the Yacht Club of St. Louis at approximately 9am and ventured down river with our close friends whom were visiting from Terre Haute, IN. During the trip we passed through 2 locks and had great water conditions which made for a fantastic boat ride. We dropped anchor under the Arch, had lunch and enjoyed the scenery as downtown was busy with All Star game activities. All in all it was a great day minus long delays at the Mel Prices lock due to barge traffic.

Alton, IL

Mayor is Concerned About Levee Safety......

According to a news report from AltonDailyNews.com............  Alton's mayor isn't planning to "wait and see" if Alton's damaged levee will hold back the next flood. He is actively seeking support to get the levee repaired.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were watching a significant sand boil near the Mel Price Lock and Dam last week.  The sand boil is located just up-river from the dam. This levee holds the river back for about $ 350,000,000  worth of commercial and residential property.

This "emergency" fix would be paid for by federal funds and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have to request money from the US Congress......

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

MacArthur Bridge Came About To Circumvent Rail Monopoly.............

According to a news report from stltoday.com............  At the turn of the century, railroad barons owned both bridges that spanned the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri.  And they imposed a toll, or "bridge arbitrary" on anything that crossed by train or wagon.

This toll added considerably to the cost of food, merchandise, and even coal.  Voters eventually approved a bond issue for a new "free bridge" in order to get around the rail monopolies.

Construction on the Free Bridge began in 1909, and despite cost overruns, was finally opened in 1917.  The Bridge was later named MacArthur, to honor General Douglas MacArthur, following the U.S. entry into WW II.

Ironically, the city swapped the MacArthur Bridge with the Terminal Rail Road Association's Eads Bridge in 1989 for the Metro Link project.............

River History....

23 November 2004 in River History

The rusting hull of the Towboat America was moved from it's mooring site just below Winfield Dam on the Mississippi River to a mooring site near Kampsville, IL.

This is the towboat that was moored by the Ferry landing right below Winfied Dam for many, many years.

Below is a picture from Capt'n Tony Trice.

Dan Owen of the "Boat Photo Museum" sent us a photo of the America that was taken March 8, 1972 near Donaldsonville, La.

It had a sister boat named UNITED STATES. These were two of the first "Super Towboats" used on the lower Mississippi River. They both had four engines and regularly pushed 40 barges up and down the river. She is huge! 184' by 58'. She had Cooper-Bessemer diesels, which provided 9,000 horsepower, and a quadruple screw. St. Louis ship built her in 1960 for Federal Barge Line, which sold her to Logan Towing in 1980. In the 1985 Inland River Record it says, 'taken back June 1984 by Hibernia National Bank, New Orleans; sold at public auction April 1985. After removed from service, the interior was stripped and made into a floating restaurant/showboat for use at St. Paul. This did not fully materialize and the boat was later sold to the Goldstein interests of Davenport, Iowa, to be made into a landing boat for one of their casinos in the area. This again did not prove fruitful. The boat was moved to Wood River, Ill., at Economy Boat Store for a year or so, then back up to Batchtown.

Cap't George Shindel sent us the picture below of the Towboat America in it's mooring spot in Kampsville, Illinois in April of 2004.

We caught 3 goliath grouper, the largest around 40 lbs. All were released.

Nice cobia, 26 lbs, and 1 barracuda.

The first picture is Dick Forbis helping Sue with the largest grouper.

Asian Carp Update

Carp DNA Found Above The Fish Barrier...............

In a news report from jsonline.com.................   Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had acknowledged that tests conducted earlier in the fall discovered 32  positive DNA samples for Asian carp above the electric fish barriers on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

It would appear that there is nothing standing in the way of the carp's migration into The Great Lakes ecosystem, except for two navigation locks that are constantly opening and closing.

Even though the biologists have found evidence of the carp in the water samples, no actual fish have been observed above the barrier.  The electric barrier is close to 20 miles from Lake Michigan.................

According to a news article from thetelegraph.com.............  Officials have stated that the water and sand seeping under the Wood River Levee may cause the levee to fail, but only if the Mississippi River levels flood beyond the levels observed in 1993.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning long and short term fixes as they monitor the underseepage.

At this point, geotechnical engineers studying the issue have said that they do not feel that levee failure will be imminent.  However, engineers are taking precautions to be prepared in the event the River levels rise while they are conducting studies, and planning..........

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day from  2006-----   was of a logging company barging cut timber across the main channel of the Mississippi from Two Branch Island to the Missouri side of the river where they are stacked on the bank,  loaded on trucks and hauled away.

The tow in the picture came to an almost complete stop as it waited for the logging barge and tug to cross the channel and get to it's destination just below Two Branch Marina..  Then the tow just seemed to float past ....as not to make any waves for the loggers.

Mississippi River Levee At Alton, Illinois Needs Urgent Repair.....

According to a news report from stltoday.com.............  Illinois officials were alerted that an underseepage issue discovered over the summer threatens a Mississippi River levee protecting Alton, East Alton, and Wood River.

While the area is not in imminent danger, if the levee were to fail during a major flood, thousands of businesses and homes would be at risk. Such a break in the levee would  relieve pool 26 of the water that is retained behind the Melvin Price Locks and Dam and interrupt river traffic.

The issue is that water is undermining the levees at Alton, and manifesting as sand boils on the inland side of the levee.  The boils were observed 200 - 300 feet inland, upstream from the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.

Sand boils are the result of hydraulic pressure, forcing River water, sand and soil from below a levee, to "boil" up on the inland side of a levee.  If too much soil and sand displacement occurs, a levee's strength is compromised................

Mississippi River At Vicksburg, Mississippi

M/V Mississippi IV Crown Jewel Of New Museum.................

According to a news article from clarionledger.com..............  The M/V Mississippi IV, dubbed the "Big Shaky" for the way it's twin engines propelled her up and down the Mississippi River, is now the showpiece of the new U.S. Army Corps of Engineers interpretive center.

Groundbreaking for the center happened recently at the Vicksburg City Front.  Sam E. Angel, senior civilian of the Mississippi River Commission, and a former crewmember of the vessel, attended the groundbreaking, and remembered many things from his time aboard the M/V Mississippi, from the noises he heard, to the caliber of the crew he served with.

The center is slated to open in 2011, and will feature the M/V Mississippi IV, the first first diesel powered vessel serving as the flagship of the Mississippi River Commission.  It will contain interactive exhibits, and other memorabilia pertaining to the Corp's efforts at the improvement of navigation and flood prevention..............

Genmar Update

   Sale Details Coming Next Week...........

According to a news story from tradeonlytoday.com..........  CEO and president of Genmar Holdings, Roger Cloutier II, stated that details of an impending Genmar sale should be available by next week.

Irwin Jacobs had stepped down as CEO, chairman of the board, as well as a director of Genmar, in order to avoid a conflict of interest while he pursues a purchase of the company.  Jacobs has been quoted saying that he intends to be the highest bidder for the company.

Early in November, the bankruptcy court had approved Genmar's request to enter into an exclusivity agreement with a "potential stalking horse" for 20 days.  Apparently, the bidder has no affiliation with Genmar, or Jacobs................

Missouri Department of Conservation News

   Sixth fishing Record of 2009

O’Fallon angler sets sixth fishing record of the year
Missouri anglers continue to make 2009 a year to remember.

DEFIANCE, Mo.–The weather may be cooling down, but Missouri anglers continue to set a hot pace for fishing records, this time with a little-known species of herring.

James M. Lucas, of O’Fallon, snagged a 1-pound, 8-ounce skipjack herring at Sandy Slough, just off the Mississippi River in Lincoln County, Sept. 15. The streamlined, silvery fish measured 18 inches from nose to tail.

Before Lucas’ entry, the Missouri Department of Conservation did not have a skipjack herring record in the “alternative methods” category. Fisheries Management Biologist Marvin Boyer determined that the fish met the minimum weight requirement for its species, clearing the way for its certification.

“Alternative methods” include snagging, trotlines, spearfishing, bowfishing and other methods besides hand-held poles and lines.

Lucas’ record catch is just a shade smaller than the current pole-line-and-lure record skipjack, a 1-pound, 11-ounce specimen caught from the Osage River by George Gerloff, of Jefferson City, in 2005.

Entry forms, rules and a list of Missouri fishing records are available online at www.MissouriConservation.org. Click on keywords “Fishing” and “Browse Fishing by Subject.”

The same Web page has information about the Conservation Department’s Master Angler program, which recognizes notable catches that fall short of records. For qualifying lengths and weights, visit http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/Documents/71.pdf.

Great River Road At  Alton, Illinois

   Heavy Rains Bring Mudslides..............

According to a news report from kmov.com................  A mudslide at Piasa Park, just north of downtown Alton, Illinois, has been attributed to heavy rains.  Luckily no injuries were reported.

Mud fell approximately 150 feet from the top off the bluff, landing at the entrance to the cave.

At this point, there is only minor damage, however, concerns are high about the saturation of the remaining mud at the top of the bluff.............

Good News About Capt'n Gary Behnke

Gary Behnke, who hails out of North Shore Marina in the cruiser, Rae Marie V, had hip replacement surgery on Tuesday and he is doing great. He went in at 10:45 and got out at 12:30. He is feeling OK and he is ready to go to the river already.

He should get to get up and walk around tomorrow morning (Wed). He is able to leave the hospital if all goes well on Friday .

I just was going to let you know that he's doing good and wishes he was at the beach right now.

Missouri River At Washington, Missouri

   New Bridge Crucial At Washington..............

In a news story from fox2now.com..................  While the bridge spanning the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri, looks good from the top, the rusty underpinnings supporting the bridge have raised concerns with MoDOT, and motorists that cross the bridge daily.

At this time, repairs are all that is in the budget, as a replacement will cost $60 million.  So far, around $6 million in band-aids have been applied to the span over the last two years.

The band-aids will buy perhaps 6 to 10 years to secure the financing for a new bridge.  Unfortunately, detour routes to cross the Missouri River begin with 60 miles, so a new bridge will be a necessity..............

River History.... (Yesterday's)

November 17, 2008 in River History

The US Coast Guard hearing on the cause of the July 23, 2008 accident that spilled 280,000 gallons of oil into the Mississippi River in New Orleans concluded.

Neither the captain of the pushboat Mel Oliver nor the executives of the towing company testified. The captain filed a statement, refusing to testify, and four officers of the company that operated the Mel Oliver submitted statements declining to be interviewed.

The Mel Oliver was pushing a barge loaded with fuel oil when it suddenly changed course and veered into the path of the ship Tintomara.

The captain of the Mel Oliver was not on board. He had left the pushboat several days earlier to drive to Illinois for personal reasons. The Apprentice Mate testified that the two had an arrangement where they would cover for each other when one wanted time away from the pushboat.

Mississippi River At Caruthersville, Missouri

Grain Shipments Stall Due To Lack Of Barges...........

According to a news report from kait8.com.............  The third busiest port in Missouri is backing up with grain, as there are too few barges to ship the grain. The biggest problem has been the October rains pushing back harvests, so they coincide with the harvests up north.

As a result, demand is high for barges in the northern states, where farmers are trying to get their crops shipped before the arrival of winter.

The barge shortage has also driven up shipping costs.  During a weeks time, shipping prices per bushel jumped from 35-45 cents, up to 65 cents.  The good news is that once the northern harvest is completed, more barges will be freed up..............

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri

Clarksville Wants To End The Flooding................

According to a news story from fox2now.com................  The diminutive Missouri town of Clarksville's 490 residents has had it with the Mississippi River flooding.

Clarksville is known for it's scenic view of one of the widest portions of the Mississippi River, as well as it's quaint shops. Unfortunately, the town suffers from frequent flooding, with last years floods being the third worst on record.

A long-term, but pricey flood control plan has been conceived, that includes a removable floodwall, and sewer upgrades.  More studies are needed and costs have yet to be determined.............

Missouri River....   St. Charles Riverwalk Plan

Marina Owners on Mississippi River are Skeptical

Marinas dot the Mississippi River shoreline in northern St. Charles County,
particularly along the seven-mile-long Dardenne slough. But there are no
marinas on the Missouri River in St. Charles.

"There's a reason for that," said Terry Alexander, owner of the Yacht Club
of St. Louis. "The Missouri River is wild and woolly.".....

Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal to Close for Fish Barrier Maintenance

Fish toxicant to be used to prevent Asian carp from moving past barrier toward Lake Michigan

Asian Carp FAQ's here

CHICAGO – A section of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) is planned to be closed to all traffic, weather permitting, beginning December 2 for a period of four to five days.

During the first week of December, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to perform scheduled maintenance on Barrier IIA, one of two electric barriers presently in operation on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal constructed to prevent the movement of the destructive Asian carp into Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes. Performing scheduled maintenance is required in order to maintain reliability of the structures and minimize the risk of unplanned outages due to inadequate maintenance.

During the maintenance shutdown, Barrier I will remain active. However, because of late summer detection of Asian carp near the barrier system and concern that Barrier I may not be effective in deterring juvenile fish, a fish toxicant called rotenone will be applied to the canal between the barrier and the Lockport Lock and Dam. The application will allow for the removal of Asian carp and other fish to keep them from advancing past the barrier toward Lake Michigan. Illinois EPA water quality experts will be monitoring downstream of the application zone to ensure that the waters of the state are protected, and the chemicals do not move beyond the designated application area.

“The barrier is currently the only protection against Asian carp for the Great Lakes and the maintenance shutdown may present an opportunity for the destructive fish to advance up the canal toward Lake Michigan,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Assistant Director John Rogner.

During this process, the U.S. Coast Guard will be enforcing a safety zone and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) will be closed to all commercial and recreational vessel traffic between CSSC Mile Marker 291 and CSSC Mile Marker 298. The waterway is planned to be closed beginning December 2 and last for the duration of operations.

“We understand the impact of this canal closure on commercial and recreational waterway users, but it is necessary to help protect lives, prevent long-term damage to the ecosystem, and facilitate the working group’s application of rotenone and its cleanup, ” said Rear Adm. Peter Neffenger, Commander of the Ninth U.S. Coast Guard District. “We will work closely with our partner agencies to reopen the waterway as soon as operations permit.”

Asian carp have been detected using environmental DNA testing in the canal below the barrier, and there is consensus among federal, state, and local agencies along with other partners that actions must be taken to prevent these invasive species from reaching Lake Michigan while Barrier IIA is shut down.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), in coordination with the multi-agency Asian Carp Rapid Response Workgroup along with the Great Lakes Interagency Task Force, will manage the application of rotenone in the CSSC. While the toxicant will eradicate Asian carp and other fish in the canal, rotenone does not present a risk to people or other wildlife when used properly.

The application of rotenone is planned for December 3, and crews from the IDNR and other agencies will remove fish from the canal and dispose of them in a landfill. The fish habitat in the section of the canal scheduled for treatment is made up of mostly non-sport fish with the most common species being common carp, goldfish, and gizzard shad. Before the application of rotenone, an electro-fishing operation will be conducted to relocate as many sport fish as possible. Rotenone dissipates quickly on its own, but to accelerate that process a neutralizing agent known as potassium permanganate will be used following the application.

The Asian Carp Rapid Response Workgroup and its partners are committed to implementing the rapid response plan and completing the electric barrier maintenance as quickly as possible to expedite the reopening of the ship canal.

“Protecting and restoring the Great Lakes is one of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s highest priorities,” said Cameron Davis, Senior Advisor to U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson on the Great Lakes. “The plan announced today reflects a difficult, but critical team effort to protect the lakes against a destructive fish that could cause catastrophic damage to the Great Lakes ecosystem.”

If Asian carp become established in the Great Lakes, they could cause a catastrophic decline in native fish species and severely damage the Great Lakes sport fishing industry, valued at $7 billion.

The Asian Carp Rapid Response Workgroup includes the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Coast Guard, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Chicago Department of Environment, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, Midwest Generation, Great Lakes Commission, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, International Joint Commission, and Wisconsin Sea Grant. Fisheries management agencies from Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York are also providing support to the operation.

Missouri Department of Conservation News.................

Eagle Days start Dec. 5

Missourians have five weekends to attend organized
eagle-viewing events, or they can strike out on their own.

CLARKSVILLE– Five events starting in December offer Missourians a chance to see bald eagles in the wild and indoors.

Thousands of bald eagles come to Missouri each winter. The number and location depends on weather. Because they rely on fish and waterfowl for food, eagles migrate as far south each winter as necessary to find open water. Missouri’s big rivers and reservoirs become eagle magnets some years. In other years their numbers are more modest, but a few places in the Show-Me State provide reliable eagle-viewing opportunities every year.

The Missouri Department of Conservation began taking advantage of these eagle hot spots in 1978, inviting people to come and view eagles at public events. Over the years, Eagle Days has expanded to include indoor naturalist programs with live eagles.

This year’s events include:

  • Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, near Mound City, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 and 6. Call 816-271-3100 for more information.

  • Smithville Lake, Little Platte Park Course Complex, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 9 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 10. Call 816-532-0174 for more information.

  • Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis County, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17. Call 314-877-1309 for more information.

  • Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24. Call 417-888-4237 for more information.

  • Clarksville, Lock & Dam 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 31. Call 660-785-2420 for more information.

Information also is available at mdc.mo.gov/events/eagledays.

The Conservation Department provides binoculars and spotting scopes for eagle viewing. Warm clothing is a must, since damp, windy conditions often prevail around large bodies of water in the winter. Indoor programs offer a chance to warm up and learn more about eagles and other birds of prey.

These organized events make eagle viewing easy. However, if you prefer to go it alone, you can see eagles at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area south of Columbia, Lock and Dam 25 east of Winfield, Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary east of West Alton, Bagnell Dam Access at Lake of the Ozarks, Mingo NWR northwest of Puxico, Table Rock Lake and Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery southwest of Branson and Truman Reservoir near Warsaw.

Watch for eagles perched in large trees at the water’s edge. Early mornings are best for seeing eagles flying and fishing.

The Picture of the Day ..... was sent to us by Marilyn McKinney

Bill,

Thought I'd share this beautiful sunset. I took this while on our way back to Portage Des Sioux from dinner at Cedar Hill with friends in 2007. It was a beautiful day and spectacular ride.

I don't have my own boat (YET!) but have really loved every minute I've spent on the river with friends. I'm so glad they have shared this life with me!

Jumping Asian Tourist !

Bill,

Loved the pic and story about the Asian tourists. It cracked me up!...especially considering the fact that I was hit in the head by a flying Asian Carp 2 summers ago. Knocked me to the floor of the boat and cut my ear. Now...Do I need to worry about flying Asian tourists hitting me in the head too?! LOL!

Asian Carp Alert

Feds Announce All The Stops Are Out To Fight Carp................

According to a news story from easternecho.com..................  Federal agencies are "pulling all stops" to combat the Asian carp from advancing into the Great Lakes, including poisoning them.

The move to poison the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal came about since the newest electric fish barrier must be taken down for routine maintenance, and the older, less powerful barrier does not have the capability to repel juvenile Asian carp.

Other carp countermeasures in the works include a third electric barrier, expected to be up and running late next year, upping the voltage on the second barrier again, and permanent measures to prevent flooding on the Des Plaines River, which could allow the carp to circumvent the canal barriers..............
